when you add onto a tumblr post you are replying directly to the OP. 'oh no!' you might say to this 'but i want to have my own opinion that is at best only tangentially related to op's thoughts! what ever am i supposed to do?' you might also say. but there's a trick for that. tumblr hides THIS little button in the corner of your screen. its a life hack a lot of people dont know about

On the limitations of 'AFAB' and its attendant epistemic anxieties
Like, let's actually talk about the shortcomings of these linguistic tools, and how we--all of us--have been failed by those at the supposed bleeding edge of gender theory.

weird how many cultures had a term for “assigned male, but dressed and presented as female and used women’s names and pronouns, but don’t worry they’re NOT actually women, or men, just some third worse thing” and how few had a word for “assigned male, but lived as a woman and was respected.” curious, might be some part of a larger issue at play here.

seeing straight men be disgusted by booktok smut recommenders has actually radicalized me to the side of booktok smut recommenders. girls your taste may be atrocious but i will never disparage you for exposing mainstream discourse to the concept of soaking through your underwear. spent my whole life listening to men talk about penises it’s about time they get jumpscared by women talking about pussy in crude detail on social media. go forth and goon my warriors

Its a common refrain from people in fandom spaces, especially comic book fandom spaces, to try to tell queer people to "make our own characters" whenever we even tentatively suggest queer representation in characters we like. Probably the biggest example of this phenomenon is Peter Parker Spider-Man, because Stan Lee explicitly made basically this exact argument as an excuse to avoid confirming anything and it was later revealed that Marvel made it essentially contractually impossible for Sony to depict him as anything other than a cisgender heterosexual man.
The problem with this mentality is that we've tried it, and it doesn't work.
Sticking with the Spider-Man example, there actually is a gay Spider-Man. He's completely segregated off into his own universe, but he does exist.
Or at least, he existed for a brief period where he was a supporting character in the Spider-Verse event he debuted in and then he disappeared completely.
These characters don't stick, especially when they're in their own separate universe so they don't have to touch the main continuity. Don't believe me? Alright, I'll bite. How many solo books in their own universe, without multiverse shenanigans to distract from the plot, do characters like Web Weaver and Sun Spider have? Hell, how many times have they appeared at all since the most recent Spider-Verse event ended a full year ago?
That's right, none!
We can't make our own characters, because nobody but us is going to put in time and effort to engage with those characters. Which means once the series we made the character in, for all intents and purposes that character is in the can as well. This is even worse with alternate universe comics, which are significantly less long running than the main continuity. Hell, Spider-Gwen and Miles had to leave their original universes and assimilate into 616 continuity so Marvel could justify their continued consistent use. And they still haven't used Gwen in a year.
Also, I don't think you guys realize how exhausting it is having to basically constantly rely on alternate universe variations to see ourselves represented in characters we already like and are invested in. We're not good enough for the main continuity, but sure in this one-off alternate universe Wolverine can kiss a guy. Sure, in this one limited run continuity we can kind of imply that Black Canary is maybe a trans woman depending on your interpretation. Hoped you liked gay Colossus and the accidental trans metaphor of Jessica Drew while you got them because we're literally destroying this universe now. Its constant consolation prizes and never allowing us to actually see ourselves in the big players the writers can't just choose to ignore.

"Oh yeah I thought this was a transmisogynist portrayal of a transgender woman but then i learned that the orientals have a special identity word called [extremely violent slur that is the cultural equivalent of tr@nny] and they're a kind of feminine man and actually not trans women. so actually i think this is really awesome and it's super fucked of you to say that he's a trans and also it's super fucked to take issue with any of the creators involved in this work."
I'm fucking sick of this jesus h christ. seriously?

When people respond to the headcanon of Spider-Gwen being a trans woman with "I actually think her Peter was the trans one and she's just a Good Ally and Friend" kinda annoys me for two reasons.
One, it's pretty clearly trying to find a palatable way to deny trans women the ability to see ourselves explicitly represented positively in mainstream superhero media.
Two, it doesn't seem to realize the implications of that Peter being trans if they're right. Gwen's version of Peter is a tragic figure who injects himself with Dangerous Chemicals that turn him into an aggressive, violent, literal monster. He dies chronologically before the film series even begins. It's even worse if he's the only trans representation in the movie, because that'd mean the only trans person's only role in the story would be to be mourned by his cis friend as a tool for angst.

Anyway, read the first three paragraphs of Wikipedia's page on radical feminism and then try to tell me that every idea associated with radical feminists is ontologically tainted.

I do find it incredibly tedious how "Trans woman engages with radical feminist text critically and brings her own perspective to address the flaws and see what useful ideas are contained in them" is framed as some sort of self-irradiation with TERF Particles and not like. Basic intellectual rigor
You can filter bad and good ideas in an intellectual work by engaging with it critically! That is a thing you are expected to do in every academic field!! Trans/Rad/Fem explicitly examines how rejection of trans issues has acted as a failure point of radical feminism!!! That is a significant part of the purpose of the book and when you act as if this is some evil, irredeemable exercise you are doing anti-intellectualism!!!! That is a huge red flag for reactionary thought!
Imagine doing this with anything else. You can't work with Kepler's laws of planetary motion. Why? Because they're inaccurate for the motion of Mercury, and presumably if you think about Kepler's laws for even a second you will become infected and turn into a General Relativity Denier.
