Susan Vecsey had a solo museum exhibition at the Greenville County Museum, South Carolina, in 2017 accompanied by an exhibition catalogue with an essay by Phyllis Tuchman. “Unlike, say, Fairfield Porter, another East End artist, Vecsey is less involved with the here and now. She’s not recording the details of daily life. She’s reminding you of places where you have been. With swooping curves, extended horizon lines, and a mix of tonal colors, Vecsey’s compelling images have the character of memories, recollections, reveries. You’re revisiting sites of pleasure and wonderment.” [Susan Vecsey “Untitled (White/Turquoise) 2019 oil on linen 38 x 32 inches] #susanvecsey #vecsey #stainpainting #abstraction #abstractpainting #exhibitioncatalogue #artquote #phyllistuchman #abstractart #seascape #hamptons #museumexhibition #artmuseum #soloexhibition #impressionism #colorpainting #nycart #chelseagalleries #berrycampbell (at Berry Campbell) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzo4VonFZLW/?igshid=1ngu28qlp5vpy

#FridayFeature | Helen Frankenthaler, East and Beyond, 1973 -- East and Beyond became to contemporary printmaking in the 1970s what Frankenthaler's staining of paint into the raw unprimed canvas of Mountains and Sea (1952) had been to the development of color-field painting twenty years earlier. Evoking the Japonisme of its title, East and Beyond shows how abstract, painterly aims can be translated into the recalcitrant woodcut medium. Contemporary painters, seeing the potential of the medium, turned their attention to it. A small woodcut revival followed. -- Judith Goldman, Helen Frankenthaler: The Woodcuts, Naples Museum of Art, FL, George Braziller, Inc., NY, 2002, page 10 -- Helen Frankenthaler, East and Beyond, 1973, woodcut, 31 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches, edition of 18, signed and numbered -- #helenfrankenthaler #frankenthaler #woodcut #printmaking #japonisme #ukiyoe #woodblock #eastandbeyond #east #contemporary #postwar #postwarcontemporary #stainpainting #painterly #revival #lsg #lesliesacksgallery (at Leslie Sacks Gallery)

Introduction
My object of desire is a Persian calligraphic minai bowl. Minai meaning enamel . It is an open bowl with rounded sides decorated in red, green and blue on white ground. It contains two opposing equestrian figures separated by a tree with birds at the base. The bowl features a Kufic inscription round the rim inside and a calligraphic decoration on the outside. The bowl has a diameter of 220 mm and is dated to 1100-1299 AD, during the Seljuq-Ilkhan Dynasty. I chose the bowl because of my interest in Persia and because I find it aesthetically appealing.
historical context
During the Seljuq-Ilkhan Dynasty Turkic and Mongol armies were sweeping through Persia. Despite this political instability, Iran becomes one of the most important cultural and artistic centers in the Islamic world. Under outstanding patrons, Iranian artists demonstrate tremendous ingenuity and technical skill. Their creations are among the masterpieces of late medieval Islamic art and architecture.
Minai technique
The minai technique was developed in an attempt by some Iranian potters to increase the number of colours in their palettes. Stable colours were stainpainted in a lead glaze opacified with tin and after a first firing, less stable colours were applied and the object was refired at lower temperature. The wares were fired in an enameller’s kiln, called a muffle. This technique enabled artists to paint in a greater variety of colour. Whether for economic or aesthetic reasons this method was relatively short-lived.
Horsemen
The theme of opposing horsemen on either side of a tree is fairly common in mina’i ware and seems more decorative than narrative.(1) The composition likely holds symbolic value as part of the princely cycle. The princely cycle is a term introduced by Grabar – meaning an image depicting the lifestyle of “wine, women, and song. Horsemen were particularly importance to the Seljuqs due to their origins as nomadic horsemen.
What bird: peacocks or pheasants?
On first sight the birds on the bottom seem like peacocks, but on a closer look one sees that the breast plumage is golden and the wings are blue. This is an indication that the bird is a type of pheasant (probably a golden pheasant). A male peacock has a blue breast plumage. Furthermore, the relation of body to tail is suggestive of a pheasant, because peacocks have longer tails.
Identifying the birds on the bottom is of importance for the exploration of the bowl because it leads us to the conclusion that it is more likely a hunting scene outside the court than a scene within the court. Peacocks are mostly held within the court whereas pheasants are birds that were hunted in Persia in aristocratic societies. Furthermore, the lavish garments of the horsemen are also indications of a hunting scene.
Persian and Islamic features in the tree: Zoroastrian Cypress tree or the tree of life?
The Cypress is one of the main elements in Iranian myths as a symbol of liberty, brevity and eternality. In Zoroastrian religion, the cypress is a special tree of the sun ,the ever green and fresh tree that resists against cold and darkness. So it is a symbol of life giving and sign of eternality. It was also a symbol of happiness among Zoroastrians and it has important position in decoration of wedding ceremonies.
Within an islamic context the tree is also of significance: the most common tree symbol is the tree of life that represents the beginning of all life in this world and vital forces of nature. It is  the symbol of the positive and amusing aspect of the spirit and of religious life. Because of this fact there is a plethora of cypress trees in holy places in Iran. Some people hold that every tree has a high and a downward point: one in which they possess leaves and in other times they are without leaves. But none of these exist in cypress trees for they are always green and because of this they are the symbol of freedom. Cypress grows directly and in one line upwardly and because it does not go into other trees in the vicinity, it is called a free tree.
The depiction of the tree could also be rooted in the Seljuq-Ilkhan dynasty. The tree of life is found in Central Asian Turkish mythology. Its elements symbolize the “rebirth, growth and development of the Turkic peoples.” It is also to be found in shamanism, in which the tree provides a ladder for the shamans to use, ascending and descending between the spirit world and the underworld. The wood of the sacred tree is what is said to be what was used to form the shaman’s drum, an integral part of the materials used in performances of rituals and sacred rites. The beech tree seems to have been the tree that was worshipped right up to recent times.
Only in the depiction of the cypress one could identify both: roots in Persian Zoroastrianism and in Islamic tradition. In order to understand the extent to which the bowl is Persian or Islamic, I want to mark out the typical Islamic features of the bowl. The four basic components of Islamic ornament are calligraphy, vegetal patterns, geometric patterns, and figural representation. All of them feature in the bowl, so the bowl ticks off the key categories of Islamic art. Overall, the depiction of the tree could be argued to be both: rooted in Persian Zoroastrianism or as part of Islamic tradition.
Conclusion
Overall, this minai bowl was produced in a costly way and depicts the princely cycle. My analysis of the birds to be pheasants rather than peacocks leads me to the conclusion that the scene depicted is a hunting scene taking place outside the court. The bowl contains mixed Persian and Islamic styles. I enjoyed the journey this bowl took me on and I am looking forward to being reminded of this journey through other art objects in the future.

Pat Lipsky is not only a painter of much note (Pictured here: Inisfree, 1968) but also a writer and critic of note. We encourage you to read her posting in the February 17 issue of the New Criterion in which she reviews “On the Free World” by Louis Menand. Chapter five deals with emergence of New York as the locus of the art world post-war and especially the importance of critic Clement Greenburg and Jackson Pollock. The book is long (856 pages) but her review is succinct and compelling. #patlipsky #jacksonpollock #clementgreenberg #americanart @newcriterion #modernart #leekrasner #paintingoftheday #modernart #newyorkschoolpainters #stainpainting #colorfieldpainting #abstractexpressionism #femaleartist #artadvisory #womenofabstractexpressionism https://www.instagram.com/p/CaSeHpJrsgE/?utm_medium=tumblr

Our Berry Campbell storefront in Chelsea is closed through the weekend. We reopen on Monday, July 8, 2019 at 10 am with summer hours. [Dan Christensen “Saprissa” 2002 acrylic on canvas 50 x 36 inches] Although Dan Christensen did not choose a work’s orientation in advance, in some of the late calligraphic stains, he gave his images a gravitational aspect, referencing painting’s illusionistic tradition. The horizontal shapes along the lower edges in “Saprissa” make the image suggestive of the sculptures of David Smith with their pedestal-like elements. #danchristensen #christensen #colorpainting #colorfield #stainpainting #acrylicpainting #kansascityartinstitute #nebraskaartist #saprissa #chelseagalleries #nycart #estaterepresentation #4thofjulyweekend #berrycampbell (at Berry Campbell) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bzjv8NdlYBG/?igshid=11yvykmqep8dv
