Aunque su vida fue corta, Toulouse-Lautrec fue increíblemente prolífico, ya que pintó más de 737 lienzos en sus treinta y seis años, además de acuarelas, grabados y dibujos. Quizás mejor conocido por el estilo gráfico y las vibrantes escenas de fiesta de sus carteles, pinturas como Pierreuse y La Blanchisseuse muestran la profundidad y diversidad de su talento. En La Blanchisseuse (La lavandera) , muestra a Gaudin, cuya belleza encontró cautivadora, mirando con añoranza por una ventana. Como muchas mujeres de clase trabajadora de su época, Gaudin lavaba ropa de día y se prostituía de noche para llegar a fin de mes. Esta pintura de 1886 estableció un récord para Toulouse-Lautrec cuando se vendió por 22,4 millones de dólares en Christie's @christiesinc en noviembre de 2005.
