30 "Echo beach" - Martha & the Muffins

More interesting than inspecting wallpaper.

Part of the UncoolTwo50 project, marking the best singles from 1977-99.

Songwriter Mark Gane got through college by doing tedious jobs. One was to cut massive factory rolls of wallpaper into smaller strips, taking care to remove the bits that had been mispronted. It left him a lot of time to dream about being somewhere else.

The guitar part goes round and round, like the spirals of a mind gently moving outwards. And there's an epic sax solo by Andy Haas, and a combo organ made to sound like a synthesiser. The song waits for a chorus, and waits some more, and eventually lets us have a chorus right at the very end. Which is entirely fitting, the catharsis of release in our own personal nirvana.

Echo Beach isn't anywhere specific, they didn't mean the location in Ontario or Australia. It's a state of mind, somewhere better than here. The song taps into a sense of hiraeth, a nostalgia and longing for somewhere you might never have visited.

The only international hit for Martha and the Muffins, a group named after lead singer Martha Johnson. Won the Juno as single of the year for 1980.
