Stages of Decomposition #1

First Stage: Autolysis

once death has occurred and the internal organs are no longer functioning, there is leftover CO2 (carbon dioxide), due to the organs that can clear any waste ceasing to operate. this leads to the body’s pH becoming acidic. studies have shown that over the course of approximately 20 hours post-mortem, the pH of the corpse will change from 7.0 to roughly 5.5. this drastic change in pH is harmful to cell membranes within our bodies, which may lead them to become damaged and allows the enzymes within the body to roam freely.

these enzymes then begin breaking down the cells, essentially eating them away, causing the stage of decay known as autolysis (also known as self-digestion).

during this time, other death states are likely to also occur, such as livor mortis (post-mortem hypostasis - basically the blood pools in areas of the body due to it no longer being pumped round and gravity now causes it to rest in place, this may cause dark patches on the body where the blood is resting) and rigor mortis (post-mortem rigidity - the body becomes almost frozen and stiffens, which is caused by the levels of ATP being severely decreased).

entomology is also an important post-mortem factor, as the study of which insects eating the cadaver and how many generations of said insect are living in the orifices, helps to determine the post-mortem interval (time of death).

I really really really really want to write like a 50,000 word essay talking about the success and popularity of horror movies within the last 2 years that reflect on and explore the late 20th century phenomena of the Satanic Panic; so stuff like Late Night With The Devil, Maxxxine, Longlegs etc. and compare and contrast them with the fact that we are seeing a simultaneous reemergence of Japanese media that does the same with what could arguably be seen as the closest cultural equivalent to the Satanic Panic in East Asia, known as the Japanese Occult Boom. So stuff like the Silent Hill 2 Remake and anime like Dandadan.

And then juxtapose all of that against the current sociopolitical and economic circumstances around the world, since it is a very well documented fact that interest in the supernatural, paranormal, mystical and occult, all grow exponentially during times of sociopolitical uncertainty and upheaval.......

The problem is that my autism and ADHD would make it very very difficult for me to actually write it down in essay format so someone should bother me on this app and get me to talk about my thoughts and feelings on this topic. i was inspired by @rockwgooglyeyes and @sotogalmo to do symbolisms for each of my ocs!! In order: Animal, Flower, Tarot, Solar, and Sin.

this ones gonna be pretty long since im adding images, I'll be updating this post later with my 2 new ocs' symbols (both s41), so for now itll just be Toki, Clove, Hori, and Sera.

Animal: Hare (usually fertility,,,, but um... no. just imagine a predatorial rabbit lmao)

The true singularity is the end of the tunnel, where everything is (yes this is a legit term) spaghettified. Light, matter, molecule, element, atom. Everything that passes the event horizon will end up in the singularity. You will die.

(theres no like,,, super cool image of a singularity,, not even what itd look like obv... also, the idea of the singularity is a tad bit outdated and the structure of a black hole has been reworked i believe, but for sake of. my sanity. were going with endpoint/center.)

Stages of Decomposition #2

Second Stage: Bloating

Once autolysis has occurred, the bacteria within the body begin to produce various gases, these include gases such as ammonia, methane, carbon dioxide, etc. which result in the body bloating - during this time the body can temporarily double in size.

At this stage of the process, putrefaction will begin being produced, as well as the discolouration of skin and the presence of specific insects that have been drawn to the corpse by the odours being released.

The insects present on a corpse allow for the Post-Mortem Interval (PMI), also known as the time of death, to be determined via the study of forensic entomology. Certain species of insects will only be present upon a corpse within certain stages of the decomposition process. The species, as well as how many generations of these insects exist within the orifices of the body, allow for us to discover how long a body has been deceased.
