O senior pen user! I have been a dedicate of pencils for years but finally found a pen I like (Staedtler triplus fineliner). How do I tell when to stop using the pen? It seems wasteful if ink still comes out, even if it's a pain/not fun to use anymore. And if I like these sharp points, small bodies - is there a refillable/fountain pen I should investigate?
If the pen's getting scratchy it's time for a new one. Scratchiness means the tip - AFAIK Triplus Fineliners are fibre-tipped - has worn down, or there's not enough ink coming out to properly lubricate the contact between tip and paper. Either way it's refill or (unless recyclable) landfill.
*****
Check Goulet Pens and Jet Pens for refillable fountain pens with fine nibs.
It's possible to experiment without spending very much, for instance the Jinhao 993 Shark from Goulet is $3.95. I might get one of these for @dduane, because of Ed-related Reasons. :->
The Platinum Preppy from Jetpens is $7.00...
...and the Pilot Penmanship, also from Jetpens, is $10.00.
All are refillable using cartridges or (AFAIK) a convertor for bottled ink.
Personal opinion: in my experience Pilot nibs at the cheap end of the range have been consistently superior to how they might reasonably perform for the price. Maybe I've just been lucky, however DD's two Pilot Metropolitans continue the "better than paid for" trend.
I'm pretty sure both Jet and Goulet could refine the search even further if you emailed them with a query like "What (inexpensive) fountain pen writes as fine as a Staedtler Triplus Fineliner?", although my recommendations may already fit the bill. :->
I've bought stuff unavailable in Europe from both companies - those Pilot Metropolitans had stub and fine nibs, for instance; for some reason the Pilot MR equivalent over here is medium-only - and they were very prompt and friendly even though my orders were just small ones from a customer unlikely to be frequent.
Hope This Helps!

WHICH ART MATERIALS DO YOU USE?!
LIKE, HOW DOES YOUR PEN.. PEN LIKE THAT. THE LINES ARE SO AKHSOWHSIWHISJW
AND YOUR COLORS ACTUALLY COLOR
Please. I need to know.
Hi!! So I’ll be very honest I don’t use anything fancy!
So here’s the list and a funny story along with them! (You’re getting the whole experience)
INKING:
STA Pigment Liner Pack. (I found one in the street and I liked it so I went to look for more online. Almost died for picking up something from the street counter: 1)
- Pros: Waterproof! (For a while) And since it’s a pack, they come with many different sizes
- Cons: after some time the ink does erase a little, and loses its waterproof….
Sharpie Permanent Marker Ultra Fine (I was in desperate need for new inking pen.)
-Pros: Doesn’t ERASE!! Very strong pigment. Water proof. Lasts!!
-Cons: smell…
COLORING:
Royal & Langnickel 18 watercolors: (I just wanted to have something to do in school since I never had much work to do)
Pros: Very Travel Friendly
Cons: idk!! I’m not a watercolor person !! It’s the first time for me!!
Aenart 36 Dual Pens: (I was gifted this from the school!! The embarrassing part was that I sleeping when it all happened. They stormed in the classroom with a camera in my face saying: “YOUR WISH HAS BEEN GRANTED.” I practically jumped out of my chair! Apparently my teacher bought it for me!<3)
Pros: MANY COLORS!! VERY PRETTY!! White marker is perfect for shading white!! (I know nothing about shading)
Cons: none I love them
Staedtler 10 Triplus fineliner: (no story)
Pros: very fine! Very pigmented!
Cons: I don’t remember… maybe don’t put them near watercolor if not dried or applying?
Crayola Color Pencils: (I do not have a full pack. The ones I have are from elementary. I’m currently in college.)
Pros: I like them :) very affordable
Cons: idk! Maybe a professional knows…
Imperial Color Pencils: (I only have ONE! It’s the red one. Almost died for picking up something from the street counter: 2)
Pros: The red one is very nice! Very pigmented!
Cons: idk… I don’t have the full pack…
U Brands Gel Pens 30 Count: ( I got this from a secret Santa! A YEAR LATE. A YEARR!! So when I received it I was very pleased. The year wait was worth it)
Pros: many colors!! Glitter!! Metallic too!!
Cons: does NOT dry fast. Need to wait for it to dry or it will smudge everywhere. The white gel pen doesn’t work well. Get a special one for that! (Someone told me here which one but I already forgot….)
PROCESS:
So ofc sketch first!!
Inking: I use the STA pen for face and face shape. Since I draw Fukase (mostly), I use it for his face markings too. (After erasing sketch, I advice to touch up anywhere you used the STA Pen) For the Sharpie Pen I use it for the the rest. Background, body, clothes, etc.
Coloring: First I go over it with my watercolors. I put them down before I put down the markers. For example, I use the watercolor first for Fukase’s hair. Then I use the Staedtler Pens to get that bright red! For clothes (or anything else) I use Aenart Markers. For the background, I put my crayola/ imperial color pencils on top. Depends on the feeling I want. Then I usually like to outline my drawings with the U Brands Gel Pens. When I tell you I put glitter on all my drawings, I put it on ALL my drawings!! I LOVE SHINY!!
Conclusion:
I really hope this was able to answer your question! I’m pretty sure most of the things on my list are affordable! I also hope my process was able to help explain how I make coloring… well coloring (English is not my first language I apologize. I suck at my first language too, though). I also hope you enjoyed the bonus stories (I didn’t want to make this whole thing boring). If you have any more questions I’ll be happy to answer them!! Also THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I never thought someone would actually like how I color since I struggle big time with it,,, I’m self taught so I have no idea of the art basics of coloring.
Anyway, thank you so much again!!
- Honey
P.S. Due to legal reasons, not sponsored.
#art#traditional art#sketchbook#art materials#I mostly draw Fukase so I used him as the process example haha#thank you for the ask!!#I literally made a list of all the things I used to make sure I had everything down

I found a journal of mine from 2008.
The first thing I wrote in it was that I was going to use that notebook for everything- journaling, notes, ideas, writing, everything. I've decided to try out the same thing now. Maybe in fifteen years I'll read it and LOL about it on whatever platform I've moved to.
I was hanging out on 4chan in '08. I hate remembering that. I was old enough to know better. I can tell myself I've grown, at least. I was also watching Torchwood, and I'm not ashamed of that, but I don't miss it.
I used the word "squee" unironically. Just look at this shit:
(Image ID: Lined notebook paper, handwriting reading "and that us just the very essence of SQUEE!" and below that, partly obscured, "But, anyway, I have reading to do.")
I wrote down words I didn't know from the book I was reading, and I'm happy to report that they're familiar to me now. Ameliorate and homologous- though I do need spellcheck to get them right.
I was struggling with reading often. Still do, though I'm embracing audiobooks.
I was still talking to my mother. I was still excited for Spore.
Based on the colors, I think I was using Pilot pens. Until March 9th, when I first started using Staedtler Triplus Fineliners.
I might have become a teeny tiny bit obsessed with them.
For years. For so many years.
I'm using Sharpie S-Gels now, because a (pre-Musk) Twitter friend suggested them. But the color selection is disappointing, so I think I'm going to switch to Sarasa soon.
(Image ID: Lined notebook paper, handwriting reading "I'm listening to static now, because music sounds weird when I'm this tired.")
I'm not saying I have auditory processing problems, but I am saying that I should ask my psychiatrist about it.
I wasn't drawing cephalopods as much then as I did later, but I did find this:
(Image ID: Pencil on lined paper. A squid, and an overlaid sword. The cross guard ends of the sword are the squid's eyes. The overall design is mainly overlapping and symmetrical tentacles.)
Not bad, past self.

jetpens order came in :3
i got:
two staedtler triplus fineliners
uni-ball one gel pen in light pink for my DIARY!! that i've just started
two uni-ball signos
di atramentis document ink in blue
kuretake gansai tambi watercolor in ultramarine pale
also as much as i want to be a blank or lined spiral bound guy on the go, i am finally accepting that i prefer dot grid or reg grid hardbound notebooks for my bag. in my backpack there can be spiral bound notebooks (still prefer grid paper) but in my edc bag the spirals kinda just get smashed sideways over time. maybe i'll make a protective box for my favorite ever sketchbooks (which are spiral bound) but otherwise i love a leuchtturm

Thank you all so very much for your suggestions, especially @syzara, @stealthflower, @fourthage, @athousandotherfaces, and @blackestnight! Also, huge, HUGE thanks to @silksieve who I should have known had an encyclopedic knowledge of stationery vocabulary, and who, when I sent a very ugly Paint picture of what I finally realized I was looking for, sent three examples to me in less than five minutes.
Here's what I ended up getting!
I got the translucent ones in purple and ocean in both sizes, and the beige dots in the small and plain white in the large. The index stickies on the right are the only actual traditional paper pads I bought that were close to what was in my head.
I'm going to try washi tape as well--I'd never heard of it before, and I had real trouble finding it in the larger width I wanted in a pattern I liked, but we'll give it a shot!
This pad was too lovely to pass up, and then I really just wanted fine-tipped brown pens, but I couldn't find them in just that color, so I got packs of the Staedtler Triplus Fineliner in regular and permanent to see which one works best on these surfaces.
I'm absolutely determined to use these supplies (I bought from Etsy, Amazon, JetPens, and MochiThings), so I'll report back once everything arrives and I have opinions to dispense. 🫡 Thanks again for all the suggestions and help!
All right, I know these must exist, but I'm struggling to find them! I'm looking for sticky notes I can use to annotate some of my poetry books. I need them big enough I can write notes on them and draw arrows to lines, but not so big that they hang off more than one edge at a time, as I don't care for wrinkly paper edges.
I'd also prefer a pretty pattern, but at this point I'm desperate enough to settle for solid colors!

Super study session! Rushing my Drama revision for tomorrow, as well as some English so I can say I’ve done some English this holiday, this is while listening to my favourite hype playlist. School restarts tomorrow along with the end-of-year mocks and I cannot be more stressed.
TYPING HYPE playlist (the one I’m using to study fast)

This World Mental Health Day I'm looking out for myself a little bit atypically - my self care is usually tea and bed and pyjamas. However I'm cracking on with some reading for uni (there is still tea tbh) and trying to get my studyblr back on - as a final year student I feel like I need the aesthetic motivation!
