Lynching victim Rubin Stacy’s story being told by his family in film screening at NSU
Anne Naves knew something bad had happened to her uncle when her male relatives came home from fishing, each wearing a pall of silence. Dad wasn’t cracking jokes like usual. Grandfather looked grave. And her uncle, Rubin Stacy, hadn’t come back. The next day, someone from the funeral home said a body had been dropped off.
Naves, 8 years old at the time, only discovered the full gruesome truth about her uncle years later. On July 19, 1935, acting on an unproven accusation from a white woman, a masked lynch mob strung up Stacy under a Fort Lauderdale tree, hanged him and shot him 17 times as spectators gawked and children laughed.
The brutality and silence of Stacy’s lynching is revisited in the new documentary, “Rubin,” which will screen on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Nova Southeastern University. In the hourlong film, the farmhand’s death is recounted through the eyes of his surviving descendants, but mainly through Naves, who was the last living eyewitness to the trauma — and to the secrecy — that followed.
The film, the first to be made by relatives of Stacy’s family, also chronicles the history of lynchings in America, used as a tool of punishment and to foster silence.
“I think (my family) knew that, without telling us (kids) what really happened, they would save us a lot of trauma,” Naves says in the documentary. “The neighbors and our church members respected our silence, too, because they knew that if it could happen to our family, it could happen to theirs.”
For “Rubin” director Tenille Brown, who is a cousin of Rubin Stacy, the film has in recent weeks also morphed into something else: a posthumous tribute to Naves. After filming her interviews for the documentary, she died on Sept. 18 at age 96, leaving behind a strong legacy: She was a Broward County educator for 25 years, teaching at Pines Middle and other schools.
“The biggest piece of the film was Anne,” Brown says in an interview with the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “Without her, there’s no story. She’s the driving force. She was ready to talk. She told me to record her. She really pushed me when I didn’t feel confident and said, ‘Record me anyway. Just go.’ ”
The rest of America witnessed the cruelty of Stacy’s lynching long before Naves did. A series of photos immortalize the moment when a white crowd gathered around Stacy’s body hanging from a tree. These images ran in newspapers nationwide, were published by the NAACP, Life magazine and National Geographic, and are now archived in the Library of Congress.
It was a tale of Jim Crow-era racism that Fort Lauderdale would’ve rather forgotten — the brother of a corrupt Broward County sheriff participated in the lynching — but city officials have made strides in recent years to acknowledge the tragedy by placing memorial markers around Fort Lauderdale. One is on Davie Boulevard and Southwest 31st Avenue, also known as Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, near where Stacy took his last breath. There’s another on the 800 block of Northwest Second Street, where he lived, and a third at Woodlawn Cemetery, his final resting place. In February 2022, a section of Davie Boulevard was renamed Rubin Stacy Memorial Boulevard.
“I’m glad they acknowledged it,” says Brown, of Pompano Beach. “These stories make some people in the state uncomfortable, but if they are based on fact, we need to tell the truth. You can’t turn your head. These are things you can’t ignore.”
For Brown, it was these memorials — and Naves’ willingness to break her silence — that motivated her to reconstruct Stacy’s story. To do so, she also interviewed Ken Cutler, Parkland commissioner and historian, and Tameka Bradley Hobbs, library regional manager of Fort Lauderdale’s African American Research Library and Cultural Center.
“My family didn’t want to talk about it out of fear for years,” Brown says. “There was shame. There’s an element of hurt, and you can hear that emotion in Anne’s voice. Now it feels freeing. This is a story that was suppressed for years and by sharing it, this is how we overcome.”
Michael Anderson, a producer for “Rubin,” says the film also tackles what too many school textbooks don’t stress enough: the history of Black lynchings.
“For Black youth to know their stories, they have to know the history of lynchings,” Anderson says. “They still don’t know how lynchings were used as a weapon to keep a community quiet. That’s exactly what it did to Rubin Stacy’s family.”

Will.of.Oz (Unexpected Musical) — PattyCake Productions music video
youtube
For the third offering in their Unexpected Musicals series, the PattyCake guys got even more ambitious. Combining the club jams of the Black Eyed Peas with the spectacle of The Wizard of Oz required a bigger cast and more locations than their first two videos. Not to mention all the costumes, props, set pieces, and visual effects. But they pulled all of it off with their own unique flair.
Details:
title: Unexpected Musicals – Will.of.Oz
performers: Rachel Copeland (Dorothy); Alexander Browne (Scarecrow / coronor / Winkie guard); E. Michael Evans (Tin Man); Earl Elkins, Jr. (Cowardly Lion); Olivia Adkins (Glinda); Kathy Castellucci (Wicked Witch); Fletcher Wakim (Toto); Eli Jacobson (Lollipop Guild); Annesley Kolb, Kelsey Kolb, & Lilly Kolb (Lullaby League); Charlie Crook, Blanca Rosero, Savannah Simerly, Annabel Rosario, Danielle Peronto, Fred Ramos, Nick Perez, Britt Nicole, Richard Bianco, Polly Pocket, & Jonathan Shane Ferrell (munchkins)
original songs / performers: [0:20] "Let's Get It Started" by the Black Eyed Peas; [1:46] "Don't Phunk with My Heart" by the Black Eyed Peas; [2:10] "Don't Lie" by the Black Eyed Peas; [2:40] "I Gotta Feeling" by the Black Eyed Peas; [3:10] "Boom Boom Pow" by the Black Eyed Peas; [3:28] "Scream and Shout" by will.i.am, featuring Britney Spears; [3:54] "The Time (I've Had the Time of My Life)" by the Black Eyed Peas
written by: all songs by William "will.i.am" Adams in collaboration — "Let's Get It Started" with Allan "apl.de.ap" Pineda, Jaime "Taboo" Gomez, Terence Yoshiaki, Michael Fratantuno, & George Pajon, Jr.; "Don't Phunk with My Heart" with Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson, Priese "Printz" Board, George Pajon, Jr., Full Force, Kalyanji–Anandji, & Shyamalal Babu "Indeevar" Rai; "Don't Lie" with Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson, Jaime "Taboo" Gomez, Allan "apl.de.ap" Pineda, Chris Peters, Drew Peters, & Richard "Slick Rick" Walters; "I Gotta Feeling" with Allan "apl.de.ap" Pineda, Jaime "Taboo" Gomez, & Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson, David Guetta, & Frédéric Riesterer; "Boom Boom Pow" with Allan "apl.de.ap" Pineda, Jaime "Taboo" Gomez, & Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson; "Scream and Shout" with Jean Baptiste Kouame, Tula "Tulisa" Contostavlos, & Jef Martens; "The Time (I've Had the Time of My Life)" by John DeNicola, Donald Markowitz, & Franke Previte
arranged by: Tony Wakim & Layne Stein
release date: 5 December 2016
My favorite bits:
the munchkins' various entertaining entrances
Eli recreating the Lollipop Guild's expressions and herky-jerky dance moves
the Scarecrow saying ♫ "lose control of body and soul" ♫ as he's gangling about
the "Ding Dong" instrumental melody playing underneath Dorothy and the Scarecrow's exit
and "If I Only Had…" under the Tin Man's introduction
including the iconic "Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!" as a counterpoint to "Don't Phunk With My Heart"
Earl's fantastic lion growl and melodramatic wailing (and poor little Fletcher getting confused by it)
the lovely harmonized ♫ "no no no no" ♫ section in "Don't Lie"
the bombast of "Boom Boom Pow" being delivered by the illusory visage of Oz the Great and Powerful
Kathy's pitch-perfect Margaret Hamilton witch cackle
the layered melodies in the coda section
all those incredible costumes (Tony was busy!)
Trivia:
According to PattyCake's Instagram teasers, it took 68 yards of fabric to make Glinda's voluminous gown, 2500 hand-stiched sequins to cover each pair of ruby slippers, and 57 pounds of actual tin to make the Tin Man's armor.
The Lullabye League is portrayed by Layne's step-daughters.
Jonathan Shane Ferrell isn't just one of the munchins. He's also one of the artists from Makeup & Creative Arts who provided the incredible character prosthetics.
PattyCake released their first public blooper reel for this project, and it is very fun.
youtube
The team at Makeup & Creative Arts released a time lapse prosthetics demo video for their Oz collection a couple years later with Dan Varnum donning the Lion's mane, Kathy Castellucci reprising her Wicked Witch role, Geoff Castellucci going gray silver as the Tin Man, & Paul Kaleka getting stuffed into the Scarecrow's burlap.
youtube
Rachel slipped back into Dorothy's gingham dress the following year to play Judy Garland in PattyCake's "La La Land" video.
Tony had performed "Let's Get It Started" many, many times during his decade as Dracula in the "Beetlejuice Graveyard Revue" at Universal Studios.
"Let's Get It Started" was also part of the opening medley for VoicePlay's second episode of The Sing-Off, though not the section the guys were featured in.
Layne had previously created a remix of "I Gotta Feeling" back in 2010 through his studio, Rayne's Room.

Okay guys, here's the deal.
Ya boi got his hands on PWI's May 2006 double issue a couple months ago, the second half of which is pretty much nothing but predictions for the careers of a bunch of wrestlers who were active that year. About 60 pages of your favorites, most hated, and never-heard-of's of 2006. Some predictions sad, some ironic, some disturbingly accurate, some funny, some just very wrong, it's a good mix. They go from 'what are they gonna do for the rest of the year?' to 'what will they be doing in 2011?' to 'what will they be doing in 2016?', so it's some real fun and games with hindsight. What I wanna do is ask y'all to comment anyone whose predictions you're interested in hearing and I'll post a scan of that page and a transcription. It'll be like a series if I get enough requests, and I'll comment here and there because that's what I do. Feel free to comment as many names as you'd like. Names include (and this is all of them in the order they are listed, alphabetically by last name):
Kurt Angle

@wrathiincarnate “you really don’t have to do that, not for me.” FOR STACI
"Yes I do," Staci urged, boot toeing at the wrapped up cloth on the ground to push it closer to Emmet between the bars of his cage. Pratt glanced around nervously. The next patrol would be passing through in the next three minutes if he had his timing down right. Even under the thumb of Jacob, Staci couldn't help but see so much around the Veteran's center. He paid attention. Vigilance becoming a state he was unable to turn off as a form of survival. As exhausting as that was. Inside the cloth was a small piece of bread and a chunk of rabbit thigh, still slightly warmed from when it was cooked. Emmet's concern was warranted, of course. If Staci were caught stealing food and helping the Rookie Deputy like this, he would be punished severely, if not worse. Various bruises of varying stages of healing on his face and arms in the form of defensive wounds painted a picture of some of the ways the cultist made lessons stick.
"You - You gotta eat, Rook," Staci, whispered, pleading but unable to look Emmet in the eyes as he curled his fingers around the bars of the cage. A small sound off in the distance made Staci jump, panic in his eyes as he looked around. He appeared much like what the rabbit must have looked like as it was being hunted. On edge. Feeling the approach of death. Of course, realistically the project's hunters had been swift and the creature had never seen it coming. Not like Staci, he could vividly picture everything that could be done to him because he'd seen it done to so many people already. Finally, Pratt looked Emmet in the eyes. The young deputy's brown eyes looked traumatized. That was the only way to describe the look. "You gotta keep your strength up, Rook," he urged. Tongue felt heavy, getting stuck in his throat to the point he couldn't get his words out for a moment. They need you strong. Jacob needs you strong. Jacob has plans for you. He couldn't warn him. No matter how much he tried. He just hoped the Jr Dep would understand. Surely, right? Unlikely with how cryptic and frantic he seemed. Oh how Jacob had dug so deep into his brain.
"You must be strong. The weak -- the weak must be culled," he whispered still but his tone grew gravelly and he sounded like he had a growl stuck deep in his throat. "Do you -- You you understand, right, Rook?" He smiled nervously, nodding quickly. He looked unwell. Unstable. Like he might fully lose it or even burst into tears if Emmet didn't right now reach down and scarf down the food Pratt had smuggled him.

In the 23rd century, inhabitants of a domed city freely experience all of life’s pleasures — but no one is allowed to live past 30. Citizens can try for a chance at being “renewed” in a civic ceremony on their 30th birthday. Escape is the only other option. Credits: TheMovieDb. At least for the two “Runners’ who have escaped out of their bubble world. It is fraught with twists and turns in a post Peak-Oil world, where society has finally found a solution to the resources of the planet. The ‘chosen’ few, however have one little catch, their lives have a unique way of ending, until these two discover a new way, and a Lie that was being told to all of the citizens. (Warning for younger viewers, there are scenes where (At the time,) it was considered risque to show people jumping into a freshwater pond and going skinny dipping).

Johnny Gill Jr. (born May 22, 1966) is a singer-songwriter and actor. He is the sixth and final member of New Edition and was a member of the supergroup called LSG. He has released eight solo albums, three albums with New Edition, two albums with LSG, and one collaborative album with Stacy Lattisaw.
His recording career began when his childhood friend Stacy Lattisaw convinced him to record a demo. This demo fell into the hands of the president of Atlantic Records, and his first self-titled debut album was released shortly thereafter on Atlantic subsidiary Cotillion Records. He teamed up with Stacy for the duet album Perfect Combination. A second solo album on Cotillion Records, Chemistry, was released.
He began a new chapter in his career when he was recruited by Michael Bivins to join New Edition. Bobby Brown had been voted out of the group and he was brought in to replace lead singer Ralph Tresvant, who was rumored at the time to be leaving to pursue a solo career. He became the only member of New Edition who was not from Boston. He was the oldest member, and as one of the lead singers on the album Heart Break, the group developed a more mature, adult sound, hitting the charts with songs such as “Can You Stand The Rain”, “N.E. Heartbreak”, “If It Isn’t Love”, and the Gill-led “Boys To Men”.
He reunited with New Edition; they signed with Bad Boy Records and released the album One Love which included the single “Hot 2Nite”. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
