This. This is what I feel the movie got so, so wrong.

Being Spider-Man is a tragedy because you bear the burden alone. Not because of some predestination, not because of the risk of the universe collapsing if you try to save your loved ones. It’s because the universe hasn’t been kind to you before, and isn’t being too nice right now, but you have the power to make it just that little bit better for everyone. You have the responsibility to make it better for everyone, you did regardless, but now the power levels are matched a bit better. Only…when it goes wrong, it goes so terribly wrong, sometimes. But now there are others around you who understand what that means, and who know that it doesn’t have to be this way. Your responsibilities are theirs, theirs are yours, because you’re a team now. And if it’s you and them together, the universe doesn’t stand a chance.

We create Spiders to be part of the team. Once upon a time, maybe it was to replace Peter. But not anymore. Now it’s to join him.

The whole “canon” shtick that defined the movie? Pardon my Québécois, but…bugger that. A Spider’s life is about trying to stop others from suffering. It’s not about suffering yourself, being divinely ordained to suffer. “Anyone can wear the mask” means nothing if the “canon” says they all have to go through the same story. “Friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man” means nothing if the simple decisions of one ordinary human—save a police officer, catch a falling lover and hug their still-alive body tight, maybe go wrestling tomorrow night instead—means that the universe will be destroyed if things go right. If there are good things in store from the canon, they’re never defined in any meaningful way. It constricts the heroes.

Worse than that. It denies the heroes the chance to be heroes for each other.

Whatever “canon” wants to do, it’s welcome to it, but for my own Spiders? Peter Pauker, Roshni Raj, Peredur y Parchedig, Spider-Glitch, Jorōgumo, Ebenezer Parker, Peggy Price, Charlie and his 300 brothers and sisters? They’ll be out saving people. Not because they have to, but because they can.

I have a theory regarding Spidersonas. Specifically after someone said that the desire of a spidersona is to replace Peter Parker, I found myself disagreeing with them, but wondering why. So I came up with a new theory. I believe that Spidersonas come not from the desire to replace, but rather the desire to help and to be a part of a community. We all see the tragedy that binds together the lives of Peter Parker, Miles Morales, Gwen Stacy, and all of the others, and it strikes a chord. We say to ourselves “if I was there, this wouldn’t have happened. If only I was a spider-hero too, I would’ve helped them. I could’ve stopped this tragedy.” And then beyond that we find others who share the same desire, and a community is born. And so we dream and desire, not desiring to be the only Spider-Man, but to fight in a community alongside him. We dream of an army of spiders. A collective of wall crawlers so great that none of us will ever have to suffer tragedy ever again. Because the others will be there to lend a hand.

410. Redo

In another world, Miles won’t hear from Gwen for over a year.

In this world, he’s been Spider-Man for three months by the time the door opens again.

“You got a minute?”

He does. Oh, he most certainly does.

It’s night when they head out, and New York is dazzling.

(Although if Miles has thoughts on comparing the city’s lights to the face of his friend, he keeps them to himself.)

“Miguel O’Hara,” explains Gwen, as they swing down Fulton. “He’s kind of like a, hmm, a ninja vampire? But sarcastic. Very sarcastic. He and Peni got the gizmos working.”

“Wait, so what’s the difference between a goober and a gizmo?”

“…I’m not actually sure. But Miguel’s pretty insistent on it. He and Peni haven’t stopped arguing since he came by I think.”

Miles chuckles.

“So Peni went and got Spider-Ham first, who knows what kind of trouble he’s getting up to, and then they went to get, uh, Noir Peter? And then me. And, well…”

Miles feels pretty warm inside, despite the nip from the March air and the rush from the swing.

“…thanks.”

“Nothing to thank me for, I mean, everyone else was already there and we still need to get to Other Peter—”

“I mean it, though. Thank you.” He smiles. “I missed you.”

“Yeah, I figured,” teases Gwen.

(But she’s smiling too. He can tell.)

“Watch out for the truck!”

“Watch out for the whAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAI’m alive!”

There’s a near-triangular building at the intersection with Hoyt that has a spectacular view of the city. Black and red and gold and white and blue, towers rising from the dark of the river to rival the lights from the sky.

Gwen, mask off and upside-down, breathes in the air. “Ahh. You know, this place even smells different?”

“And that, Spider-Woman,” says Miles beside her, leaning back on the glass with stars all around them, “is a definite sign you ain’t from Brooklyn.”

She slaps lightly at his arm. “Shush, you. I meant…there’s something else in the air. Sound doesn’t echo the same way it does back home, it’s dulled. But the colours are clearer. Things don’t blur as easily.”

“Is it really that different in your world?” Miles asks.

Gwen shrugs. “Wanna come see?”

Thankfully Miles has not picked up Ham’s comedic timing, because falling straight off the glass on a forty-something-storey building would be a terrible idea.

“You serious?”

“Pretty serious, yeah.” Gwen sits up, reaches into her pocket, and pulls out…

It looks like a watch. Steely grey, two sets of numbers. One reads 1610. The other reads 2314, which he thinks is the actual time right now.

Miles takes it with a look of absolute amazement on his face, and Gwen can't help but laugh in delight. Miles laughs back, and the echoes spin in space and time.

“Welcome to the club, Miles.”
