Call it a fix-it of sorts…

410. Redo

In another world, Miles won’t hear from Gwen for over a year.

In this world, he’s been Spider-Man for three months by the time the door opens again.

“You got a minute?”

He does. Oh, he most certainly does.

It’s night when they head out, and New York is dazzling.

(Although if Miles has thoughts on comparing the city’s lights to the face of his friend, he keeps them to himself.)

“Miguel O’Hara,” explains Gwen, as they swing down Fulton. “He’s kind of like a, hmm, a ninja vampire? But sarcastic. Very sarcastic. He and Peni got the gizmos working.”

“Wait, so what’s the difference between a goober and a gizmo?”

“…I’m not actually sure. But Miguel’s pretty insistent on it. He and Peni haven’t stopped arguing since he came by I think.”

Miles chuckles.

“So Peni went and got Spider-Ham first, who knows what kind of trouble he’s getting up to, and then they went to get, uh, Noir Peter? And then me. And, well…”

Miles feels pretty warm inside, despite the nip from the March air and the rush from the swing.

“…thanks.”

“Nothing to thank me for, I mean, everyone else was already there and we still need to get to Other Peter—”

“I mean it, though. Thank you.” He smiles. “I missed you.”

“Yeah, I figured,” teases Gwen.

(But she’s smiling too. He can tell.)

“Watch out for the truck!”

“Watch out for the whAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAI’m alive!”

There’s a near-triangular building at the intersection with Hoyt that has a spectacular view of the city. Black and red and gold and white and blue, towers rising from the dark of the river to rival the lights from the sky.

Gwen, mask off and upside-down, breathes in the air. “Ahh. You know, this place even smells different?”

“And that, Spider-Woman,” says Miles beside her, leaning back on the glass with stars all around them, “is a definite sign you ain’t from Brooklyn.”

She slaps lightly at his arm. “Shush, you. I meant…there’s something else in the air. Sound doesn’t echo the same way it does back home, it’s dulled. But the colours are clearer. Things don’t blur as easily.”

“Is it really that different in your world?” Miles asks.

Gwen shrugs. “Wanna come see?”

Thankfully Miles has not picked up Ham’s comedic timing, because falling straight off the glass on a forty-something-storey building would be a terrible idea.

“You serious?”

“Pretty serious, yeah.” Gwen sits up, reaches into her pocket, and pulls out…

It looks like a watch. Steely grey, two sets of numbers. One reads 1610. The other reads 2314, which he thinks is the actual time right now.

Miles takes it with a look of absolute amazement on his face, and Gwen can't help but laugh in delight. Miles laughs back, and the echoes spin in space and time.

“Welcome to the club, Miles.”
