About 30 per cent of newsroom jobs have been cut at a 145-year-old daily newspaper in St. John’s, N.L., following a takeover by Postmedia. Keith Gosse, head of the union representing workers at The Telegram, says staff learned Wednesday that four of the paper’s 13 newsroom positions will be eliminated. As well, Saturday will be the paper’s last daily print edition, as it is moving to a weekly print version beginning next week with daily news online. Gosse says there were more than 40 people working in the newsroom when he first started at The Telegram in 1986.

Fall day at the Battery St. John's Newfoundland. Another few weeks and this place will be full of colours. It doesn't matter what season, this place is always beautiful!

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
—John McCrae 1872 – 1918

The Wonderful Grand Band (1978-1983) was a Newfoundland comedy program for and by Newfoundlanders. Alienating to anyone unfamiliar with Newfoundland accents pr culture, it is sorta hypnotic regardless.

It is located on the eastern tip of the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland. The city spans 446.04 km2 and is the easternmost city in North America. Its name has been attributed to the belief that John Cabot sailed into the harbour on the Nativity of John the Baptist in 1497, although it is most likely a legend that came with British settlement. Hundreds of people marched along Water Street in downtown St. John's on Sunday afternoon to show support for Palestinians in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war. It's the third straight Sunday that people in the city have rallied in support of Palestinians. This time, more than 300 people gathered in Harbourside Park and marched to the steps of the St. John's courthouse. Since the Oct. 7th Hamas attack and the subsequent Israeli military response, thousands have been killed on both sides of the conflict. Israel says the initial Hamas attack killed 1,400 people, while Gaza's Health Ministry said the death toll among Palestinians has now passed 8,000. In St. John's, Salma Awad spoke to the assembled crowd between loud chants and cheers. "I'm disappointed to be back again, but I do still pray this is my last time but we have to raise our voices, we have to keep showing up, we have to keep our solidarity with the Palestinian people," she said.

It’s officially the first day of summer and on cue we’ve got a 30ºC+ day ahead of us here on the Newfoundland east coast. The weather for June has been lovely, absolutely perfect for hiking.
I’m not usually a fan of the super hot weather but as always make sure you slap on the sunscreen or stay hydrated. Don’t forget to bring snacks while you’re out and about too if you’re going to be like me hitting the trails. Carbs and some salty snacks are your friends!
I’m excited to be getting to the warm months of the year and enjoying nature in full bloom.
Cheers!
