What is the moral of // IS there a "moral" to The Devil Wears Prada?
[Considered leaving the title in black which would be surely the most appropriate colour - erm, if black *is* a colour, but then remembered the cutting take-down of Andy's sweater in an early scene, so...]
Possibly my memory for movies-past is fading but I FEEL as though I just recently saw The Devil Wears Prada for the first time.
It's fun, of course, seeing these IMO fantastic leads in the Before years - in some cases - and knowing How It Goes. I'm thinking here of Streep, Blunt and Tucci alongside Hathaway - without intending any shade to the rest of the cast, they're not memorable to me - though one of the Friend Gang had a familiar face and I believe was later cast as one of the ensemble level team in the series Mad Men.
But it did leave me wondering What Is This Story FOR? And that question somewhat resolves itself when I realised that it's based on Lauren Weisberger's novelisation ("roman a clef"? "autofiction"?) of her real-life [miserable] experiences as the assistant to Anna Wintour.
There's not REALLY a moral, right? A woman who treats her co-workers appallingly is revealed to have - behaved appallingly to one of her co-workers, in order to save her own job. This somehow causes the AH character to quit, even though it adds no material additional insight to her knowledge of the inner workings of the MS character.
Are we supposed to believe that AH is convinced "she cares about us, really" until MS's betrayal of ST's long-suffering aide shows us: nah?
The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw - predictably - didn't like it much:
He particularly didn't like what the movie served us of Emily Blunt, perhaps because she was being asked to be a parody Brit-bitch?
This put me in mind of Tom Hardy's role in This Means War which, from my memory of it, had something of The Brit Must Fail about it (?). This article from Screen Rant certainly underlines that TH didn't enjoy making the movie - though it doesn't really explore WHY. It stops with the vague "he probably didn't connect with the material". I feel like I've read a more pointed article where he talked about feeling excluded and Not Part of the Gang (which I also recall interpreting as being to do with feeling like The Excluded Brit). But - perhaps I'm internet-hallucinating? This version of the article just confirm that he didn't like the experience and hasn't repeated it. [It avoided making the impolite and frankly Age-ist comment that TH has also Aged Out of the ideal MC age-range for rom-coms. OR HAS HE?]
"I didn't understand how you could do something which is so much fun and be so miserable doing it," Tom Hardy stated of filming This Mean War.
Anyway, notwithstanding the lukewarm reception for her role, EB apparently had a blast making the movie //and// pretty sure it was via this role that ST ended up attending EB's wedding and subsequently marrying her sister, Felicity? May or may not be relevant. What certainly is relevant - and I've been thinking about this quite a bit recently - is that EB's life and roles transformed, she says, as a result of this particular role and, not knowing better than EB about her own life, I am very happy to believe here.
Specifically, the thing I've been thinking about is the moment that causes someone's life to change - probably it's not one moment but more than one moment, but sometimes maybe it is really that One sliding-doors event that means a person does or does not step through some kind of career enhancement portal into a Beyond.
Here's a nice Guardian article about lessons in life and writing from Hilary Mantel as told by one of her mentees - non-coincidentally taking advantage of that famous connection one more time in the run-up to the publication of her next novel. Frankly - good on her. Why not? It's not as though HM would have objected - she understood the value of the famous name and frequently exploited that on behalf of younger, less-established writers because HM was a decent human being who took a long time to become an Overnight Success and, I guess, felt motivated to open doors for others:
Anyway, basically, I've come to the conclusion that [we/I] don't watch the movie to see the characters go on a journey of moral enlightenment. I mean, there aren't many movies (are there?) that so emphatically end by putting all the characters more-or-less back where they started. Sure, AH is going for the job she originally wanted. Yes, her relationship is on rockier ground. But, essentially, it's a re-set, except that AH got away from Fashion, her morals lightly dented. What the whole sorry experience did give her was... a solid gold reference from a first rate awful - but influential - employer. This, we learn, is The World. This, we understand, is The Way.
No, the reason [we/I] watch the movie is because AH absolutely OWNS the fashion montage scene. I'd happily watch this on repeat:
youtube
Sort of a post-script because Timing - but seems that the bus ads I've been ignoring could have told me that The Devil Wears Prada Musical is opening in London in late October.
[Looked for an image of said ads - didn't immediately find one - but essentially it's a "doesn't take the bus" gag.]
The Rest is Entertainment recently discussed the attraction of musicals - namely, that the touring opportunities are £££££££££. Apparently Universal held the rights to Wicked and through being persuaded to put the musical into development, had a wake-up moment in discovering that musicals were LUCRATIVE. Not the required but expensive run on Broadway but the regional shows.
So, apparently that's why there are So Many Musicals based on movies - and the attraction for audiences is - these are known quantities for audiences who are being asked to pay hundreds of ££ for tickets. Much less likely to take a chance on something new when that kind of money is on the table. Richard Osman related this in context of John O'Farrell's decision to get involved with the Mrs Doubtfire movie, having tried original IP Something Rotten to mixed success. (Apparently to GREAT success for US high schools but wasn't ever quite able to break through on Broadway.)
This is the episode in qu from TRIE, anyway -

Trans Bloodborne Headcannons
When I said I think they’re all trans I meant that literally.
The Good Hunter: Enby. Seek paleblood transend gender. Specifically I think they’re genderfluid but tend to stick around the outskirts of the binary.
The Doll: Agender, baby!!!! Doesn’t really have an identity of their own but they’re working on it! The first part of that process was figuring out that they’re not what everyone calls them.
Gehrman: Gehrman is a closeted transfem. I believe
Laurence: Incredibly transmasc to me but I can see him not really labling it, he’s too busy being evil.
Micolash: He couldn’t explain it to you. I feel like if Mic was introduced to xenopronouns or neopronouns he’d use some of those. Probably xe/xem from the ones I know (if you have a neopronoun you think mic would use comment bellow!!).
Rom: Thought she was cis until she became a big spider and realised gender was kinda silly.
Caryll: Also agender! They don’t really see the value in gender in the pursuit of ascension.
Ludwig: He is a boy but also not a boy.
Simon: Binary trans guy!! My fella!!
Brador: He’s had a lot of time to think in that cell he may have come to some conclusions.
Lady Maria: She is a butch transbian to me. I have so much love in my heart for her.
St Adeline: Transfem as well!! For similar reasons to the other eldritch-alined characters she probably doesn’t fully see herself in the binary. She sits and has chats with Kos about gender.
Djura: vERY masc transman. Walks around topless i think.
Archiblad: GNC cis guy. He likes to wear pretty dresses while doing horrid lightning experiments.
Izzy: Bigender. A boy and a girl and a werewolf.
Annalise: Binary trans woman. She’s just deadass a vampire what can i say.
Adella: One of those people who’s like “I don’t experience gender so it has to just be sex, right?” and is passivly transphobic till it clicks for her.
Arianna: She is intersex!! I want to give her the biggest hug!!!!!
Chapel Dweller: Doen’t know what gender is. Look I’ve tried to explain but they just don’t get it.
Eileen: Butch cis woman!! She’s very very trans supportive though, she gives big hugs to Yharnam’s trans kids.
Henryk: Another transmasc to me. Grandad...
Yuri: Demi-girl. Girl but not quite.
Damian: Pretty similar to Mic in the sense he couldn’t really describe it to you. Not cis tho.
Valtr: You tell him you’re trans and he says “Why does that matter when the vile corruption is still plauging the earth, confederate.”
Yamamura: Cis but knows a lot about it. Tells Valtr to be a little more empathetic.
Younger Mandaras Twin: Snake.
Patches: Transman. This applies to every version of Patches but specifically the spider.
#long post#this was actually a lot of fun#i empore you guys to add your own i love bloodborne gender fuckery and i by no means have a monopoly on it#the rat speaks#Bloodborne#headcanons#not tagging them all sorry#transgender#sososososo transgender

How up would people be for a Merthur AU set in Christmas Town with Uther as the current Santa in a long line of Santa's and Arthur is his heir, Morgana has secret Jack Frost Magic, Guias is Head Elf & Merlin is the Elf who is really proud that he can wrap literally anything with just three bits of sticky tape, literally anything. But then Elf Merlin gets kidnapped and Arthur has to go against his father's orders to go to the land of misfit toys and get Merlin back.
And the Five Kingdoms are Christmas Town, Halloween Town with Alined the Pumpkin King, Easter Town with Olaf the Easter Bunny & his daughter Vivian Bunny, Bayard the Leprechaun rulling over St. Patrick's Day Town, and Valentine's Day Town with Cupid King Goldwyn & Princess Elena.
And Uther's anti-magic is all tied up with certain festivals like Yule surviving to the modern day but losing the old Celtic pagan roots while others like the Kingdom of Beltane are really weak now. But Arthur and Merlin want to bring the magic back to Christmas and restore the old traditions
#i'm probably going to write this either way i just want to know if anyone besides me actually wants this#bbc merlin#merthur#merlin#arthur pendragon#Mithian's father is the sandman#and land of misfit toys is just the perioulus lands#the fisher king is a super old jack in the box#this is what happens when you read Merthur fanfiction and listen to Sia's christmas album at the same time

David Theodore Dobie was born 21 October 1912 in Tynemouth, United Kingdom. He was a rugby player for Hull and East Riding R.U.F.C and worked as an insurance broker before the war.
He was a naughty boy. In 1939 he was arrested for taking away a bus without consent and spraying it with fire extinguishers (he and his friend were drunk after celebrating the victory of their rugby team).
At the outbreak of WW2, he was a Territorial officer, then he joined the paratroops and served in the North African campaign. He was awarded Distinguished Service Order (DSO) for bravery in Tunisia (see the last newspaper clip for the interview about the battle). In 1940 he was sent to France and evacuated at Dunkirk in June 1940.
In Oct 1944 when he was missing in Arnhem, his sister went to newspapers asking for his information. On 26th Oct, he succeeded in reaching the British lines and gave his sister a call when he arrived in London. "It was a marvellous surprise when he rang me up", his sister, Mrs H. Ellis of St. Catherine's Vicarage, Wigan, told a "Mail" reproter today. "But I had a feeling he would do something like that. He didn't tell me how he got away, and I don't know at the moment where he is".
On 16th Dec 1944, he married Aline Rosemary Hunter-Blair, who was a V.A.D. nurse he met in the summer of 1944. I think Strayer was invited to the wedding but he had to hurry back to Bastogne soon after the wedding.
After the war, he went to East Africa to sell Mercedes-Benz.

do you have historical romance recs where the hero has good jealousy moments (without becoming overbearing to the point where it gets annoying, which I know can be different for everyone)? thank you very much! I love me a good jealous hero :D
Lisa Kleypas tends to do good jealousy. Westcliff is very jealous of St. Vincent in It Happened One Autumn (with good reason, because St. Vincent would've had Lillian on her back in like 30 seconds on a good day), McKenna is very jealous of Aline's friend Lord Sandridge (not a good reason, Sandridge is gay), in Then Came You, which I'm currently reading, Alex is super jealous of Derek Craven (with good reason). Seduce Me at Sunrise has Kev being super jealous of this doctor guy who's courting Win.
In Dreaming of You, Derek has a great moment where he finds out that Sara kissed her fiancé Perry after getting all turned on by Derek, which is funny because a) you were the other man my guy b) it's all about Derek??? And Perry shows up and is like "YOU WOMAN ARE A SLATTERN WHO CAME AT ME WITH INSATIABLE LUST" and after he gets kicked out Sara is like oh thanks Derek and Derek is like "INSATIABLE??? LUST???" and she has to be "oh it was my insatiable lust for yOU" and then they realize her parents are standing there like damn, if our daughter ain't pregnant now she's ABOUT TO BE.
The Saint by Monica McCarty has a lot of jealousy angst stuff, as the hero and heroine had a thwarted love thing and she has to marry his best friend at the beginning of the book.
The Wrong Marquess has a lot of delightful jealousy because the heroine thinks she's in love with her douchey friend and the hero is her other friend's brother who initially was a bit of a tool to her. He's big jealous.
When the Earl Met His Match by Stacy Reid is soooo good. The hero and heroine correspond for a while platonically, and she eventually shows up on his doorstep in Scotland, pregnant out of wedlock and having run away because her parents were going to take her baby away from her, and her baby's father abandoned her. The hero offers a marriage of convenience and claims her baby, but the biological father comes into the picture after the marriage gets physical and the baby is born, and it's gooood angst. The hero is also mute, so he can only communicate through signing and writing.
How to Marry a Marquess by Stacy Reid also has some jealousy, because the heroine enlists her friend to help her get another man to fall in love with her (it's actually.... him she wants too have fall in love with her).
The Fifth Avenue Rebels by Joanna Shupe is great for this, because every hero in the first three books is jealous of the Duke of Lockwood because he's alternately either courting their women or being like, the perfect friend/shoulder for them to cry on/that guy your girl tells you not to worry about. Then in his own book, he's like, HELLA jealous of any man sniffing around Nellie. To the point that he follows her into this attempted hookup with a waiter and is like "HELLO. DINNER IS WAITING. I'M JUST HERE AS A CONCERNED PARTY."
When the Duke Was Wicked by Lorraine Heath is another "I'm enlisting you to help me find a man but really that man is you" book, where the hero is a family friend of the heroine's and has known her since she was a child. He's all protective and shit, but it's really about how much he wants her.
The Return of the Duke by Lorraine Heath has the added twist of the hero being jealous of his dead dad, because the heroine was said father's mistress.
I'm Only Wicked with You by Julie Anne Long has a hero who's big jealous of the man courting the bratty girl he's had a big enemies to lovers thing with.
What I Did for a Duke by Julie Anne Long has a heroine who thinks she's into another guy, and the hero is.... quite jealous.
After Dark with the Duke by Julie Anne Long has a scandalous opera singer heroine who's running into virtual hiding after two men fought a duel over her, and the hero is very uptight and judgmental about it, but really he's JEALOUS of tHOSE WHO GET TO TOUCH HER.
