I’ve already done music recommendations so, you can check out these posts (playlists and list of artists) if you’re looking for that specifically. But Wilbur made a lot of content over the years and idk, i figured I’d make a a list of recommendations for similar content to fill that void as well :)

Minecraft SMP’s (specifically DSMP)

The same SMP’s but other POV’s — I’ll just start with this cos it’s the most iffy. There’s plenty of enjoyment to be had with these fandoms still, and I personally don’t think we need to let the actions of a couple shitty guys ruin the silly Minecraft roleplay we all enjoy. That said, if you aren’t comfy watching these anymore that’s perfectly valid as well, especially since Wilbur’s character will be lurking around in the background of plenty of these. But yeah, we can also uplift other creators by watching the fun stories they made, especially those who got buried by bigger creators at the time. So Dream SMP, QSMP, Origins SMP, SMP earth, SMPlive all have content you can enjoy.

Different, completely unrelated SMP’s — hermitcraft, the life series, empires SMP (shubble was involved in this one, I’m planning on watching her POV when I find some time) etc. I’ve had plenty of people recommend these to me before, from what I’ve seen they’re very enjoyable :)

Hamilton — not even joking, if you enjoyed the L’manberg era of DSMP and you didn’t watch Hamilton, I’d heartily recommend it. Great music, lots of politics but all in a fun and silly way, also tragic endings!

Generation Loss — Ranboo’s very awesome Horror project that they’ve been working very hard on!!! Ranboo’s been teasing new content lately as well so that’s exciting

Analog horror series — Local 58, Gemini Home Entertainment, Mandela Catalog, Kane Pixel’s Backrooms videos, etc. All very good and spooky videos, definetely an inspiration for Gen Loss, and I know Wilbur enjoyed this content as well (though the editor Wilbur arg predates a lot of this genre) those are some of the biggest on YouTube atm, and some of my personal favourites, but there’s plenty more to find (I recommend channels like Nightmind and Nexpo who do analysis videos for all this horror and ARG stuff if you wanna find more)

Marble Hornets — gets its own category! One of the original analog horror genres (predated the genre actually) it’s basically one of the biggest and most comprehensive Slenderman series out there. There’s a LOT of content here and lots of lore and mystery (though a lot of the game clues have been lost to time) (Jack Manifold also reacted to this on stream, it was very chill and good fun)

Horror podcasts — Magnus Archives and Magnus Protocol, Malevolent and Archive 81 are some of my favourites, but there’s plenty more out there to find and enjoy :). Also very spooky with lots of mystery to involved, the Magnus Protocol is very new as well so great time to get into that!

Just Chatting / Geoguessr / other chill content

Geoguessr streamers / YouTubers — honestly I genuinely didn’t watch much geoguessr content outside of Wilbur’s streams so, I don’t have many recommendations here. I know Eret has been doing geoguessr streams lately and their content is very good and chill. Jacksuckatlife plays as well and last I watched he was fairly good at it (like similar skill level to Wilbur), otherwise Rainbolt is a geoguessr legend, he terrifies me a little ngl.

Other streamers — I think the thing with the just chatting streams is that we watch for *that specific streamer’s* personality. It’s hard to really make recommendations other than just saying go watch more of the streamers you enjoy. Personally I enjoy Phil’s hardcore streams, and Sneegsnag’s Crime Time the most, but there’s plenty of other people both in this MCYT space and outside of it that you’ll probably enjoy :)

Sorry boys (unlike horror I don’t watch much comedy so, sorry, this’ll be lacking)

Just Roll With It — Charlie Slimecicle’s DND podcast. I’ve only listened to a little bit of this but it’s really good and REALLY silly (oh, and emotional sometimes, gotta have a bit of angst y’know) Wilbur was a guest on a couple of episodes, but you can always skip past those if you want.

Tommy’s videos — so Wilbur features in a lot of the early vlogs and *minecraft but* videos, but Tommy’s content has always been good fun, his recent stuff is excellent as well! He’s been doing a lot of comedy content lately, specifically a live show so definitely check that out if you want :)

Smosh pit — not something I’ve watched a lot of, but I’ve seen clips of their try not to laugh videos and they’re definitely on par with the bat shit improv you get from Sorry Boys.

Game changer — again, not something I’ve watched much, mostly consumed through osmosis, but the show is funny, the cast is always silly and it’s a lot of fun all round

Whatever else Sorry Boys make after this — judging by some of the responses to Wilbur’s “statement” I think it’s fair to assume if Sorry Boys do continue making content Wilbur will be cut from the group. Of course don’t feel obligated to stick around if you don’t want to, but Wilbur won’t be compensated if he’s kicked and the rest of the guys are still fun :)

YLYL and similar goofy stuff

Just… other streamers again — Jack Manifold does YLYL streams with his friends. James Marriott does a lot of reaction videos as well, sometimes YLYL, sometimes reacting to content his viewers send in (like TikTok’s and break up texts), those are my favourites atm.

YouTubers — that niche between video essay and reaction content, people like Danny Gonzales, Drew Gooden, Kurtis Conner, Pinely, all good fun YouTube channels that make good, silly, and easy to consume content.

Other gaming streamers and YouTubers — Slimecicle, Ranboo, Games Grumps, RT games, and SneegSnag all play a wide variety of games, they’re all relatively chill but none of them take the games all that seriously either so it’s fun and goofy as well :)

And of course Fanfiction!!!

I might be a little bias here cos I write myself but fic is created by and for fans and it exists to give you even *more* content about the stories you love, whether it be reimagining canon events or just dumping your favourite characters into a silly au.

I know a lot of authors (myself included) are feeling super conflicted and weird about writing Wilbur in the future. Plenty of authors have been moving onto new fandoms so if you find something you enjoy make sure you check out the author’s other work and who knows, maybe you’ll find some cool new fandoms that way!

And do the same for artists and other creators, or even go check out some of your mutuals fandoms, you guys might have more in common than you originally thought!

Assassins as DSMP Characters

So i got really into this musical called "assassins" by steven soundheim, which is about 9 of the presidential assassinations (attemped and successful), and i was listening to "another national anthem" earlier today, and i got the random idea of it but with dsmp characters

It mostly started off from when I was listening to "the gun song" and thinking about SBI as the assassins there (Czolgosz as Techno, Booth as Phil, Guiteau as Wilbur, and Moore as Tommy). Then I was trying to think about the entire cast: that Czolgosz could really fit c!Techno, and then making the connection with Guiteau and c!Wilbur, Booth as c!Dream, the balladeer as c!Tommy, the proprietor as c!Ranboo or c!Phil (I leaned more toward c!Tommy), and then Byck as c!Ranboo

Keep in mind I haven't seen any recordings of the actual show, I just listened to the soundtrack and read about people's reactions to the show in comments and such. And also, it's been a while since I've consumed any primary sources for the dsmp, so I'm mostly going off memory (and I generally only watched Techno/Tommy's streams, though I did tune into others time to time)

I then fully fleshed out the whole sort of "cast" for "another national anthem":

Booth = Dream Zangara = Jack Czolgosz = Technoblade Hinckley = Sam Fromme = Karl Moore = Nihachu Guiteau = Wilbur Byck = Quackity Proprietor = Ranboo Balladeer = Tommy

For Booth and c!Dream, it was mostly cause they're both the most, like, "comically evil" of the bunch. I don't know exactly how to describe it but I'm sure everyone can get what I mean.

For Zangara and c!Jack, the whole sort of bitterness Zangara showed in "how i saved roosevelt" just reminds me alot of c!Jack's character, specifically the whole tommy anti plot that he had.

For Czolgosz and c!Techno, this was based on "the gun song" where Csolgosz' monologue about the workers strikes really similarly to c!Techno's anarchist opinions. I think in general communists and anarchists appear somewhat similarly to each other.

For Hinckley and c!Sam, Hinckley's whole bit in "unworthy of your love" just reminds me a lot about c!sam's "oh woe is me i do it for him"

For Fromme and c!Karl, I'm gonne be honest I don't remember why I made this connnection. In my notes I just wrote "karlnapity breakup." I feel like in general Hinckley and Fromme (and to a lesser extent Byck and Moore) don't really get much attention compared to the other assassins.

For Moore and c!Niki, same situation as with Fromme-Karl.

For Guiteau and c!Wilbur, it's because Guiteau is the most, like, manic!crazy of all of the assassins, which just reminds me alot of c!Wilbur. And just alot of beats from Guiteau's characterization feel VERY similarly to pogtopia!wilbur

For Byck and c!Quackity, I feel like Byck had alot of cynacism that feels very in line with c!Quackity's character

For the proprietor and c!Ranboo, I just feel like the proprietor is like sympathetic to the plights of the assassins, which to me felt very in line with c!Ranboo's whole "choose people not sides" bit he had going on. I was considering putting c!Dream here, considering he supplied people similarly to the proprietor in "everybody's got the right" but I thought that c!Dream would be better as Booth.

For the balladeer and c!Tommy, I just think that c!Tommy comes across as a stereotypical "oh but we must have hope no matter what!" shonen protagonist, and the balladeer just feels like a sort of antagonist to the assassins' cynical ideas, some people described him in "another national anthem" as if the embodiment of the American Dream (tm).

re: DSMP "unsolved mysteries"

I've seen lots and lots of posts about the "unsolved mysteries" on the Dream SMP that focus on the TNT on top of the prison and the missing nukes. One of those I am very confident was implied canonically to be Ranboo, and the other I'm confident in my theory that it was him. Putting it under a read more bc its fuckin Long, but its worth the read! Word count: 2482

First: TNT at the prison.

This was implied to be Ranboo across a couple different streams, albiet subtly. I'm not surprised it went a little bit under the radar, but it's simply untrue to say we have no indication of who it could be.

This point doesn't hold true across everything of this nature, and if it did, it would be a dead giveaway, but I think it's relevant here for a couple reasons: Ranboo was online at the time of the explosions. Tommy tends to reflexively open the tab menu during his lore streams, almost as a nervous habit, so we saw multiple times that Ranboo was online, and would seen it have even if Tommy had chat turned off. Online at the time were Sam, Dream, Tommy, Foolish, and Ranboo. Foolish could not have been the culprit, as he was live at the time. In the case of this incident, it would have to be manually triggered by someone. Afterwards, when Tubbo was doing his "interrogations", his first bit of evidence was checking who was online when it happened. For these reasons, I feel this is a valid point for this incident.

That night, Ranboo was live on the SMP. This stream is notable for most people because it was when Ranboo did the odd code in his inventory, that read "He is in control" (or he is in control of me, if you count the to do list). Many people focused on this as a indication that Dream controlled Ranboo to set off the TNT, but this line of thinking was abandoned over time, especially as we saw the implication that the message was actually referring to the Enderwalk, talking about Ranboo stopping himself from doing anything to save Tommy from the prison during that week. However, other details in that stream also hinted it was Ranboo. Most notable to me was Ranboo reading chat or a dono asking him what he had done that day, and him answering that he had "probably gone mining," with some uncertainty. Later that same stream, he went down into his mines , found no ingots in the furnaces, and commented "maybe [he] didn't go mining", and that he wasn't sure what he had done that morning. This comes across to me as an indication that he had a blank spot in his memory that day--that he had been Enderwalking. He drew attention to this here, where he otherwise wouldn't, because it implies he was Enderwalking while he was visibly online, on Tommy's stream, where he would have been able to set off that TNT.

Ranboo was one of the only people on the server with a positive relationship with Dream, of any sort. It is true, especially at this time, that many people had negative opinons of Tommy, but Ranboo was the only one who didn't outright hate Dream... in his Enderwalk state. (with the sole exception of Punz, if you think the vault confrontation was staged, but that's definitely theory territory.) Dream has repeatedly stated that he finds Tommy "fun" and enjoys fucking with him. Tommy was locked in the prison after Ranboo could no longer visit, so assuming he has no supernatural means of communication with Dream (which is likely, as we have no real indication otherwise), he would have been acting without instruction. What better way to help Dream out than getting him his 'plaything' for at least a week?

Alternatively, you could frame it as a distraction or a break in/out attempt... which also doesn't make sense for anyone but Ranboo. Either way you frame it, Ranboo is the only person who makes sense without having to stretch their relationship with Dream into something it isn't.

Tubbo's investigation was the only real in character investigation into this incident we saw. He started out investigating people who were online, which is why I believe it's uniquely relevant to this incident. As I mentioned earlier, Foolish's alibi was that he was live. Ranboo's alibi was that he was mining. If you recall, the day Tommy was locked into the prison, Ranboo acknowledged that he did not know what he had done that afternoon, and that he distinctly had not been mining. This investigation didn't get much further than this because Tubbo refused to acknowledge that Ranboo could have done something like this. Because Ranboo has hidden his enderwalking so well, no one has any reason to believe he would do something to intentionally hurt one of his friends, or to help Dream.

Canonically, there isn't much evidence outside of Ranboo's comments to the audience because the characters absolutely cannot find out that it was Ranboo. He cannot be revealed as a traitor, narratively. Not yet, at least. So all of the evidence has to be directed towards the audience, which leads to it falling into subtext more often than not. The Enderwalk arc has the potential for an absolutely disastrous reveal at some point, where others discover exactly what he has done. It's unlikely that something like this will be confirmed explicitly until that point, but I believe the details I have explored above are foreshadowing, and will be explored again at this reveal. This point applies to the nuke, as well--perhaps even more so for reasons I will explore below.

Second: The missing nuke.

This one treads a little more into theory territory, but I think some of the subtextual implication is in this one too, it's just a bit further apart. Instead of being implied in streams the day of the incident and one week later, these implications are a little bit further out. I don't think I'm necessarily stretching by making these connections, though I can see why someone may think it's a stretch.

Ranboo was not online during this stream. This is why I think that's only conditionally applicable to the last point--Tubbo does not check tab habitually, and he had chat turned off intentionally. The tab list isn't necessarily canon to this stream. If we go by that, Jack Manifold is physically the only person who could have taken the nuke. The only other people online were Philza and Foolish, who were both live. Since this wasn't taken into consideration for the investigations, it's not relevant here.

Out of character, Jack took the nuke. Jack did not stream his perspective of this incident, he hung behind when Tubbo went ahead to start building the silo, and when the two came back together later, it was gone. This was intentionally done, as Jack usually streams his perspective for lore like this. If he had been the one to take the nuke, we likely would already know. His secret plans are not a secret from the audience, they are a secret from other characters--this leads me to think that in character, he did not take the nuke.

Very few people knew about the nukes, so we already start with a pretty small pool of suspects. One of these people was Ranboo. Even if Ranboo did seem to forget what Tubbo told him, the nuke would have been taken while he was Enderwalking--y'know, when he remembers everything, or at least remembers more.

The backbone of this theory, and the reason why I even began to consider it, is that Ranboo has a very solid and clear motivation to want the nuke. Ranboo has been helping Dream. The nukes were made specifically to be a deterrent/protection against Dream. If Ranboo takes one of the nukes, Dream now has access to that nuke, and the playing field has been re-balanced. Essentially, it's creating Mutually Assured Destruction between them. To take it one step further, only one of the nukes went missing. Tubbo was left with one nuke, and Ranboo and Dream have one nuke. Why not just take both? Well, leaving both parties with a nuke essentially ensures neither side will use it. It protects Dream, but it also helps to maintain (a semblance of) peace. Neither side can use their nuke without the other retaliating in kind. This leads to tensions, but prevents outright warfare from either side. It's not pretty, but it aligns with Ranboo's broader goals of keeping the peace.

So we've got the motivation, it makes sense. But that's not enough to make the claim on its own. What's the evidence?

This is a touch convoluted, so I get why it doesn't necessarily come up in relation to this as evidence often, but it's pretty solid to me. Especially compared to how vague most of Ranboo's subtext can get.

It's in the lessons! The highest number of lesson we were given was 94, though when Ranboo was repeating it outloud, he said 93. He later clarified saying 93 was intentional. This stream was on April 23rd. 93 days earlier, to the day, was January 20th--the day Dream was locked in the prison. 93 lessons for 93 days. If we take this to imply the lessons were daily, starting when Dream was locked in the prison, each lesson corresponds to a specific day. March 26th was the day the nuke went missing. 67 days from January 20th is March 27th, the day after the nuke disappeared without a trace. Neither Jack nor Tubbo had any real leads on the nuke. Lesson 67, the day after the nuke was stolen... "Leave no evidence of what you have helped with." This EXACT thing is why the nuke is so hard to pin down. There was no real evidence left. This lesson lining up so closely to the nuke's disappearance is not a coincidence. Further, at this point Ranboo no longer had contact with Dream. He had locked himself out of the prison and couldn't visit. If the lessons are daily, the things he writes down are things he's figured out for himself. The lesson being the day after the nuke was stolen makes sense, when framed like that. He stole the nuke, left no evidence, and wrote that down because it worked.

All of the hints/foreshadowing for the eventual reveal of where the nuke disappeared to has to be done in retrospect, and it has to be either from Ranboo, or from some other source that knows more than the characters. Which leads into my second bit of evidence: the Tubbo Texts. Across like, a week of streams (starting on April Fools Day), spooky half transparency cryptic text appeared on screen periodically, that c!Tubbo was unaware of. Those texts have never been explored in canon, it seems that none of the characters are aware of them or of their contents. So they are posed directly to the audience. The second one in particular stands out to me here:

"Quick, I don't have much time. Stay away from the North. A strange metal weapon washed up. It poisons the nature, the water. No it's not. That's it, we are leaving."

The 'strange metal weapon' seems to refer to the nuke, the poison being the radiation. Geographical direction is rarely paid any mind on the server, but north is distinctly the direction of Techno, Phil, and Ranboo's house. I think I remember Ranboo telling Sam he lives "up north" while trying to visit the prison. The arctic commune is the only notable northward location. The nuke disappeared, and reappeared in the north, in the direction of Ranboo's home. The rest of the texts refer to the north as well. We don't know where Ranboo's base of operations is in the Enderwalk, but we can assume he has at least one, and we can assume the nuke is hidden there, if he has taken it. If Ranboo has taken the nuke, it makes sense for it to be in the North.

Ranboo has proven he can take things without any evidence left behind. Remember his first beacon, that disappeared like, a day after he set it up? He never tracked it down, just replaced it. Within a couple days, he made a comment about his pickaxe durability being suspiciously low... maybe because he was using the stolen beacon to mine far from his home base so it wasn't noticeable that he had been mining. That's beside the point. I mean this to say, he knows how to take and hide things, he knows how to keep secrets, and he almost definitely has at least one secret base we've never seen onscreen.

So maybe Ranboo took the nuke, maybe he set off the TNT at the prison, that's cool, but why have they abandoned the plotlines? Why have we never gotten more explicit answers? Why won't they come back to it?

Ultimately, it seems a lot of these plans have been pushed back and delayed for one reason or another. Beyond that, an untimely reveal of either of these things to other characters would be a huge letdown. The arc seems to be building to a catastrophically large reveal, and each thing that gets revealed before then makes it much less impactful. Keeping it subtle towards the audience, while still offering some hints, stops a certain degree of the chat spoiling "metagaming" we see sometimes, that makes some streamers have to fully ignore their chats during lore streams.

This part is very much my own opinion, but I don't believe the missing nuke plotline will be resurfacing until after Dream is out of prison. Ranboo has no reason to reveal he has it until it will be put to use, either as a nuke or as a threat, and that won't happen til Dream is out of the prison and the nuke is in his hands instead.

The TNT on top of the prison will be an insanely gratifying reveal if it comes out with the rest of the enderwalk stuff. Any of this taken out of that context just kinda falls flat. So people know Ranboo set off the TNT, or know he has the nuke. How does that propel the plot? Ranboo won't do much of anything about it. People will distrust Ranboo, sure, but they won't know the depth of the issue, and that just makes the reveal frustrating. It will be revealed in time, I'm sure, but I think the enderwalk arc has to reach a climax first, or it's just disappointing.

I agree with the general frustration that these plotlines appear to be dropped or greatly delayed, but it's a symptom of a bigger pacing issue than solving either 'mystery' on its own will fix. And the answers aren't as obfuscated as they first may seem, it just takes a little digging!

I don't think the 'Tommy is the main character' thing is particularly true. Dsmp has far too much stuff going on for there to be a single main character. There are main characters in the context of arcs, but Tommy is definitely not the main character in all of them. He's not a big part of the Egg plotline and his involvement in the prison arc was fairly limited compared to like.. Sam and Dream. Unless you're saying that the disc war is the main plotline and the other things are just sideplots...

Tommy is the main character. He doesn't have to be the star of every single plotline to be the main character.

Do you...do you watch TV shows? I don't mean to be mean, but it's similar to that. Example, I watched a show called Torchwood that I loved. Jack Harkness, a former companion on Doctor Who, and another character named Gwen were the main characters. This didn't mean every single episode was only about them. We've have entire episodes, entire arcs, that featured very little on them. The difference is that the story would explain how those stories either 1) impacted things going on with the main characters or 2) explain where they were whenever big things were going on. We'd see their reactions to it regardless of how much it impacted them as well.

Gonna use your example of the Egg Arc. They specifically had a whole bit of Tommy was immune to the Egg and the Egg Empire didn't like him. Specifically to explain where and why Tommy wasn't getting involved in it. After the banquet, we even got a stream where Tommy got to see what happened to the egg and got to react to it being "dormant."

Sam and Dream's entire conflict can be traced back to Tommy?? Sam's affection for Tommy and Dream's obsession causing the conflict?? Just because he's not physically in every stream, again, doesn't mean his actions or history isn't one of the biggest parts of the story.

The disc wars isn't the main story. Tommy's journey though? The story of him trying to find home and safety and family? Hmmmmmm

also can we talk about how this stream perfectly displayed the whole ‘multiple perspectives’ thing? like look at this from tommy’s POV

he went to the prison after just finishing his hotel to get closure. he just got off the tail end of finally feeling like he was doing better from exile, having finished the disc wars.

he goes to this prison, under the protection of Warden Sam who he trusts, and gets stuck in there with dream, his abuser, for about a week. 

his abuser then beats him to death. he gets stuck in the afterlife with wilbur, schlatt, and mexican dream with mexican dream being the only one who he was on good terms with. 

if we’re trusting what tommy said to dream about wilbur is true, that means tommy was stuck in the afterlife with a deranged wilbur for about two months. he mentioned multiple times how he wouldn’t even wish the afterlife with wilbur on his sworn enemy. 

he then is revived and forced to hear how his abuser is going to escape to continue abusing him. 

after a total of 19 real life days (if the dsmp follows IRL time), but to him it was a total of almost EIGHTY DAYS (giving about 60 days, or two months, in the afterlife)

he’s finally released from the prison only to find out that everyone thinks he’s dead. people were grieving and considering it had been a full week since his death was announced many of them are at least trying to come to terms with it. some people are even happy. 

that is a shit ton of trauma. even for someone who didn’t have prior trauma that is SO much to go through. of course he’s reacting violently and he’s angry, throwing away ranboo’s flower and belittling jack. i’m not saying c!tommy is RIGHT for doing that, i’m saying cc!tommy is acting out trauma very well.  this is an amazing demonstration of how while someone might not be correct in their actions, they have valid reasoning. 

for tubbo? he was in the process of grieving his best friend for a second time when he shows up. tubbo has an adopted kid and husband and a town to watch out for, he has to let himself get over tommy. then tommy suddenly shows up and he’s screaming at everything and lashing out and is just plain rude? i’d be confused too, and honestly even a bit pissed off. imagine going through the grief of loosing one of your closest loved ones and then just having to...not grieve them, because SIKE they’re alive? 

every single person on the server and in that stream specifically had perfectly clear reasoning for why they act the way they do. does that makes their actions correct? not always, but it does give them reason.

Tommy's prison/revival arc isnt well written actually

Anyways ive been wanting to talk on it a while for a bit here but havent had the Time or like. The thought to. But im gonna go off now.

First off im gonna say im ASSUMING this stream and plot of tommy being in the prison with dream is written entirely by tommy and dream. Wilbur May be involved in the latest stream but im not sure.

Bringing tommy back to life after only three days of him being dead did practically nothing to progress plot, the characters, or audience's understanding. In fact i feel that it damaged Other characters' potential and plot and already established plotlines.

The 'development' aspect

A really, really easy way to see if anything has changed or developed through an arc or plotline is to straightup just compare the 'beginning' to the 'end' in terms of the barebones situation. So;

Beginning: tommy is trapped in an isolated prison cell with dream, his own abuser who has hurt him in the past, for an unknown amount of time. He's terrified of dream and being stuck there with him.

End: tommy is trapped in an isolated prison cell with dream after being killed then revived by him, his own abuser whos hurt him in the past, for an unknown amount of time. Hes terrified of dream and being stuck there with him.

Okay. This is simplified obvious. But the point stands. ALTHOUGH the troupe of 'going back to the beginning' is common in the heroes journey its. It doesnt work here. Has tommy learned anything? Has he changed as a character? Is the severity of their situation any different? Have we, as the audience, learned anything new?

Im going to expand on that last point because i think it has the strongest potential argument. Technically for progression in literature and development of plot/characters, things can Change without them being Aware as characters. It can change just by the audience's perception changing or being challenge.

Slight example: i've been reading a webcomic called Your Throne. Its a fantasy/political drama about a noble lady who entered a competition with another noble lady to become the empress. The main lady lost despite her being a better fit, and the comic starts with the main lady trying to assassinate the empress. Its assumed and stated by the main lady that she 'ruined her life' and so thats all the readers know. However, later in the novel we see flashbacks to the competition itself and find that the two ladies were extremely close friends, neither wanting anything bad for the other, but it was the emperor himself who manipulated both of them for his own agenda. Those flashbacks gave us an entirely different idea of who the real antagonist is and completely changed the two main ladies' relationship. THAT is how the audience's understanding of the plot and novel can be used to change the entire story. We dont get such here though

Some things that were brought to light during tommy being dead/revived:

Dream is capable of reviving people infinitely

This was already implicated and assumed. The book dream has being a means of reviving people has been around Technically since schlatt's death. This just 'confirmed' what was known

Time works differently/feels longer in the afterlife

This doesnt really impact much beyond emotions and implications. If we had more insight into what the 'afterlife' is like beyond nothingness perhaps so. But really it just makes it so wilbur being dead for what feels like 9 years and tommy having been dead for 2 months appeal to emotions.

Wilbur is evil

This one fuckin sucks i cant lie HSKSHSISSGEGDV. Like i was gon go on bout it and i will but it jus sucks. We have nothing to go on besides tommy's word, no examlles of what Horrible things wilbur said could make tommy assume this, etcetc. Ill most likely make a seperate post on how this feels like we're just going to get 'wilbur is a horrible villain' type with him. But still. I feel wilbur Not Being Good isnt a new development.

Dream is going to revive wilbur

This doesnt feel new either, part because phil had wanted to revive wilbur before (ill get to that more later) and that tommy had kept dream alive/initially imprisoned him with the idea of him reviving wilbur.

Dream believes wilbur will break him out of prison

Okau this makes no sense to me actually. I cwnt understand How exactly wilbur would be able to do this? Or why dream believes he even Could? Mans been dead for like 9 years and all we Know of the afterlife is that its black... nothingness. How would 9 years of that make wilbur capable of busting the prison open?

So. Yeah. All in all this plotline hasnt done anything new, developed things, or altered people's perceptions. We just ended up back at square one. Back to tommy being traumatized, dream being 'evil' and horrible and doing villain monologues, and them being stuck together.

Other characters and plotlines

Im pretty damn sure tommy's revival fucked up a LOT of other characters' plotlines and potential development. Honestly i feel this has a lot to do with the writers not communicating with other ccs well enough. But Ill talk about specific characters from least to most fucked over in my opinion:

Sam

He's the best off. He hqd been there during tommy's death, had been close to tommy, had majorly blamed himself and his own mistakes for tommy's death. His grief and self hatred was actually really heartbreaking and well done. The attached character of Sam Nook being unaware of tommy's death and simply waiting for tommy to return was a really good parallel to sam's own grief and anger. like it really snapped sam the guy who cares for tommy and wants to do Right by him back together with him as the Warden of the prison. Mixed personal life with 'just business'.

I feel it wouldve been nice to have him like. Have more time to grieve properly and come to terms eith tommy's death and his own involvement/influence over the events. Him finding tommy alive again Could be a means of him like. Facing his own grief head on if done well.

Ranboo

Mostly in the context of him and sam's argument do i feel it got screwed over. The weight of them yelling at each other and trying to find who to blame and the implications that Maybe ranboo was the one who caused the security breach that closed down the prison on tommy just.... doesnt hit so hard anymore. Because how can there be blame and arguments and a 'who done it' mystery when tommy popped up all fine again?

I dony know much of her involvement or how she found out tommy died (besides metagaming shhhhh) but i saw her monologuing of how they 'failed' tommy and like. Her whole 'he was so young we the Adults failed him' spiel is like........... inconsequential? Now??? Like no dont worry he died but hes alright now.

Philza

BET YOU DIDNY EXPECT TO SEE THIS FUCKER!!!!!! But actually though i want to talk bout how this ties into phil. A LOT. for Zalbr ❤. But also because i see ppl tying phil to tommy's death n like nah shutup u doin it wrong. Ill go off more in a Wilbur Post. But essentially: i dont like that dream is now going to revive wilbur. I feel they arent going to tie philza into this Despite phil having originally been trying to revive his son and studying on it and Attempting and Failing. But now suddenly dream can just. Say some magic words and Poof wilbur lives? So we're just going to Kill philza's revival attempts plotline and leave that hanging? This made his efforts seem pointless and Wack like oh why didnt you just Say The Magic Words phil????

Niki

I feel really bad for niki. She hasnt been able to do a lore stream during tommy's 'death' (she tweeted she wanted to but her computer wasnt working) and considering her entire character.... that shit is important. We seen it with Jack Manifold how tommy's death impacted Him considering he literally wanted tommy dead. And since niki is in a similar boat to jack of trying to kill tommy and it being her Only goal...... thats extremely important.

BUT. i feel there wasnt any communication. Did she or anyone even know tommy would be revived? Did no one consider they could At Least let her do a single stream on it? Like jack manifold????

We couldve gotten a Really good niki lore stream. I genuinely was so excited for it and i dont regularly watch her. But we seen it with jack manifold which is why i dont feel he got screwed because mans genuinely did So Good he could pop off with anything n i think it works in His favour. But now........ for niki. Canonically she never even knew tommy was Dead. So its like nothing even happened for her. Is she just supposed to continue on trying to kill tommy with no progression?

What i think would work

This is more me being like 'hey @ the dsmp writers let me in' type speculation sbosegussgs. But i was thinkin on a Really easy way to 'fix' this without rewriting lore and the streams.

Dream should kill tommy again now that he's been revived and Leave Him Dead.

More development for the characters who are affected by his death Especially niki. More time for grief and self reflection and development

A chance for the audience to figure out what the 'afterlife' really is.

Dream is supposed to be smart and a master manipulator or something right? Why doesnt he use being able to revive tommy as a bargaining chip with sam for his own freedom?

The audience would now Know dream's intentions with tommy better, that this death isnt 'final', but we could still see other characters' grief and reactions and coping without it feeling cheap. Ive seen some 'but people dont know tommy is alive so hes still dead in their mind' but that sucks imo.

We'd know more on dream's ability to revive people and that he can just Do It on a whim (which i think sucks but hey im trying) but no one else would know this canonically

Top 5 Events on the DSMP?

#1 the prison break. tbh it could earn this spot solely through being the only major event i was There For, but imo it goes way past that; it really utilizes the multi-POV format, not just for tonal discrepancy (like doomsday, and to a lesser degree the 16th, hog hunt, and techno’s escape from prison) or showing different characters’ interiorities and narratives (the 16th, doomsday again) but for vital plot. Dream himself, far and away the main character of the day, doesn’t stream his perspective, but hops from stream to stream, appearing most prominently for one-on-one conversation on Techno’s and Punz’s and Tommy’s and Sapnap’s— all of which have major, unmissable plot and character developments. The way the streams were staggered was also super well done in a way that made me really appreciate watching it live— we only knew going in that Techno was going to be streaming, but ten minutes or so before he did, other notifications started going out: Niki first, and then Hannah, Boomer, Eryn, Punz, Sapnap, even Michaelmcchill. Then, about an hour in, after Dream’s escaped and has disappeared from everyone’s streams, Tommy went live—when I say that notification did things to my heart, I am not exaggerating. A bit after that, once the first streamers started ending, Jack Manifold went live, and that was also a really incredible stream for characterization in the aftermath. There was no real way to predict whose would be important— Techno’s was a given, but quite honestly, in retrospect Punz’s reveal overshadows it. And we had no idea or way to find out other than just watching all the VODs afterwards and spreading liveblogs and word of mouth for the important ones! Absolute chaos. 11/10. (I wasn’t there for it, but I do wonder if Nov 16 was similar in feeling, since it wasn’t known who the traitor was going to be? But it really feels different to me in retrospect insofar as Nov 16 was… basically all the same major plot events happening in a shared VC, other than Wilbur and Phil’s divergence at the very end, which, uh, definitely made it obvious whose VODs to check.)

Relatedly, my #2 is doomsday. Doomsday is one of the more controversial events in the fandom, from both a writing perspective and an in-game morality perspective, but, uh, quite honestly none of that has anything to do with why I love it, which is that it’s the first event to really go hard on the tonal discrepancy you can get from having multiple perspectives of a conflict all streaming at once. Is doomsday a crab rave or a moment of suicidal despair? Well, depends whose stream you’re watching. And that’s so fun! I’ve watched at least seven different perspectives of doomsday, off the top of my head, and I am almost always down to watch more, because (a) almost every character has a solo (or close to it) moment before or after the battle itself, which is consistently very characterizing, (b) even when you’re watching the same events and hearing the same conversations, the difference in perspective—what was this specific character doing at this specific moment—is also consistently characterizing. it’s good! it’s really good!!!!

#3 NOVEMBER 16. man. this is in some ways my favorite? it’s probably my favorite from a writing perspective; it’s such a Culmination, a moment of Catharsis. there have been like 4 dsmp “finale”s at this point, it’s got all the power of—shit, I can’t make “MANHUNT FINALE REMATCH REMATCH” jokes anymore, because manhunt’s actually over. :(. but like. it was the first Finale! and honestly for me at least it was the only one that was a proper Finale, in the sense of… being a Satisfying Ending. honestly I don’t think the server could have one single finale like that anymore; all the characters have become much more atomized over time, with their own storylines that may or may not intersect with everyone else, rather than the server having a strict Main Story which everyone is just showing their perspective on. in some ways this is super cool; it allows for the sort of simultaneous Totally Different POVs that I just waxed rhapsodic about! (also, people tend to credit this to doomsday and the destruction of l’manberg, but I don’t think that’s accurate at all; you see this split in pov as acutely during exile arc as you do in the prison arc, imo. it’s a difference in style between s1–especially the manburg/pogtopia arc—and everything that came after it.) but, like… man. that was a fucking ending. and with the potential prospect of the dsmp dying the slow death of Everyone Just Kind Of Being Online Less, i have to give some major appreciation for that.

I have a theory so I'm just gonna send it now

A little bit back we were discussing if the amount of subs ranboo has takes away from other dsmp streamers which I think can be a fair assumption (obvs not a direct correlation tho) but I think its kind of works the other way around too. The amount of streaming from dsmp members has gone down immensely since jan, like almost a ridiculous amount. Specifically, on their main accounts, some, like tubbo, are streaming just as much on their alt twitchs, where subs aren't encouraged as much. I think ranboo is gaining the subs lost from this. Like people are less willing to sub to someone who only streams once a week (maybe less) compared to someone who streams daily (like ranboo).

According to twitchtracker (not everybody's sub count is public tho), there are only 8 dsmp streamers in the top 100. These are:

It's actually crazyyyyy how many subs dsmp members have dropped over the past few months. George, even after that hot tub stream, is only at #110 with 8,271 subs and quackity was at around 17k before he stopped making his sub count public on tt. Apparently, karl is now only at #243 with 3,579 subs with jack, wilbur, fundy, hannah and even michael (who just joined the smp) having more subs than him (also apparently karl has only streamed on his main account 6 times in the past 2 months and one was an apology stream).

Whilst I think the alt twitch accounts are good in terms of mental health, better chats and just all round creators enjoying it more, they have really negatively impacted their sub counts. I honestly don't know if someone like karl will even use their main twitch's much anymore unless its for 'big lore™' which is kind of upsetting cause I think the "big production quality" streams have really gone to their heads they would just do those streams on their mains (but I can understand why)

Sorry this kinda devolved but I got really interested in how the content has evolved (also I don't think twitchtracker is very accurate so keep that in mind)

i honestly agree with everything it said. i think having the "dream smp" as its own brand (ie selling merch, making official social media pages) would've obviously kept it around longer however its a logistical nightmare (as the post says), dream himself doesn’t seem interested in doing that, and i think it'd kill a lot of the charm of the smp. i think a lot of people got into it because it was just silly friends goofing around on their friend's server. it's authentic, not some predetermined group of people that some manager somewhere is hoping can bring in views(unless dream is playing the long game and it is exactly this). so i think it having an official brand might kill that charm, but thats just me. also having it as its own brand would most likely create weird drama and tension that would also kill some of the authentic friendship vibes. but, they already created a brand for themselves without making an "official" dream smp brand. CCs can still throw "dream smp" in a title and get more views. when you say dream smp on twitch or youtube, people know of it and roughly know the CCs involved.

i think they definitely could’ve been more delicate with their momentum without turning it into an official brand or org. they seemed to realize how popular it was, speedrun a ton of lore, and then get burnt out so now theres no lore. i literally remember people saying they couldn’t keep up with lore earlier in the year. obviously that is not the case now. i think if they were more organized and intentional about it earlier on, they could’ve found ways to make it last longer.

ultimately, i think theres two ways to view the dsmp. as a storytelling medium, and as a little server for friends to be silly together on. personally, i’m more interested in the latter. but the former is exciting too, except now we are getting waaayyyy less of both. i think the positive is that if you like the dream smp because you get to watch friends simply be funny together, you get that now in the form of vlogs, alt streams, irl streams, etc., which is why i didn't care that much when quackity announced he wasn't doing non-lore on the dsmp anymore. i mean, when's the last time he even went on there prior to that stream? the downside is that the creators who were apart of the OG dsmp don’t need to stream or upload as often as they used to. they also seem less interested in continuing lore, again, maybe because they don't need to. they're some of the biggest creators on the platform.

i think one way they could've combat the dsmp "dying" is adding more people more frequently. i think now it is kind of divided between OGs that people associate with dsmp (feral boys, sbi, bbh, niki, fundy, tubbo, jack, ranboo, you get the idea) and newer creators! i thought i remember seeing something about michael still feeling like an outsider on a server that he belongs to. or, going back awhile, when hannah redecorated spawn and her chat got mad at her. the dream smp started as a very specific set of people and places, and the dsmp without those people, places, and conflicts, can seem so different that it doesn’t even feel like the dsmp to some. i think if dream added more people over time, it could’ve given them time to mingle with the content creators on there and have their own little inside jokes and stuff rather than just feeling like theyre intruding. adding more people more regularly would’ve given it room to breathe and grow naturally, so that OGs like tommy and tubbo (random examples) can move on with their lives and people wont freak out because the "dsmp is dying" because they'll be new people there to pick up the slack.

I think the number one spot would have to go to c!Tommy or c!Tubbo because I know the most about them specifically and have been able to get invested in their arcs the most out of anyone!

2 I think I might pick Fundy, he's been around from the very very beginning, he's the son of the old president that died and a lot of his stuff is genuinely so tragic and I love it, ALSO OMG I WAS SO IN LOVE WITH THE CONCEPT OF HIM SAYING "If I can't make them laugh I'll make them cry" (Btw the delivery on this line was fucking amazing) BUT HE ACTUALLY LIKE... WENT AWAY FOR A YEAR AND HEALED, Fundy processing his emotions by distancing himself my beloved

3 I might start fucking around and saying Connoreatspants, he's only ever canonically droppes banger lines, mans has done nothing wrong and like, firstly he fucked about and canonised my HC that he's immortal which I'm so fukn happy abt, secondly he's kind of a blank slate when it comes to lore so I can write whatever I damn want about him and thirdly cc!Connor realises his viewers might not want to see dsmp lore so he never streams it, meaning out of the people who don't have POVs we have Dream, Schlatt and Connor, which is amazing if you compare how the other two turned out

4 I think I might actually say Niki or Jack Manifold (yes I'm intentionally saying multiple people so I get to talk about how much I like more than 5 of the characters hehehe), Niki's lore is honestly really good and pretty underrated imo, I love her whole underground city and how jn her loneliness the city that was meant to be so welcoming and full of life slowly became her prison (her canonically having night terrors and not accepting that ghostbur exists is such a cool touch) and also Jack Manifold because he's got some really cool fukn stuff going on, his whole mourning tommy stream? amazing, his reaction to Tommy coming back? amazing, the stream where he broke down all of his lore and character motivations was so cool and I'm really hyped to see more of it (Also like, still not over him beating phil in a 1v1 during tftsmp)

5 (I've decided I'm gonna do more than 5, I've already done more but I'm gonna do even more more) Honestly hot take but Schlatt, Loved how much of a scumbag he was, the guy did not hide the fact that he was evil, but also as you know my opinions about his death scene GODSS the character seemed to be a 1 dimensional dictatorial villain (Which was really good to be fair, his acting really was amazing) until right at the end when suddenly there was insane amounts of depth that had been there all along he'd just been hiding it really well

6 Quackity, Quackity the girlboss my beloved, his character is the exact opposite of connor, he's the most complicated fucker on the planet and he's so involved, like every arc has a hint of Quackity's influence and I love that for him, Joke character(I don't actually think he was, but he is perceived as one) turned significant my beloved

7 Ponk, AHHHH I LOVE PONK, what a legend, Mans has red contacts to trick the egg, he has a whole wealthy ancestor plotline that I need more crumbs for!!! also that moment when he was considering what the server needed and he looked over to Schlatt's grave?? PERFECTTR SO GOOD, his whole toxic and awful relationship with Sam is so amazingly written and I love it

Tubbo probably? I think it’s because he just streams sooooo much that I’ve grown to love his sense of humor, and his rare lore streams are EXCELLENT. He’s got an impeccable mix of friendliness and kindness, and horrific chaos. I would lowkey kill to see him do a proper villain arc - sort of like Jack’s, in that it would be pretty funny, but more actual threat and a wider array of targets for his chaos. Kind of like the Giovanni to Jack (and Niki’s) Team Rocket.

Runner up is Quackity, the Funniest Man Alive and holder of most complex character arc award.

sapnap: what is your favourite part about watching the smp?

How un-beholden it is to the standards of other media. Seriously, the fact that it’s a story being told through MINECRAFT STREAMS blows my mind.

But it’s not just that it’s a funny medium, it’s that it’s innovating the way we think about storytelling and inventing it’s own visual shorthand that is specific to the medium! Things like a black screen ending meaning a character lost consciousness, the use of stream titles, the use of chat, the play on expectations that each streamer has unique them and the audience they’ve built up?

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the story of the Dsmp, but what makes it different from other stories to me is HOW it’s told, and streaming is a (on this scale) unexplored medium. We’re literally seeing the birth of a new genre of storytelling, LIVE!!!!!!
