hey, i was wondering if you know of anyone actually from fandom who like, explains it to the masses and does a good job of it? the only couple i ever heard of being suppodedly mainstream-ish fandom voices turned out to be pretty meh apparently :/

Haha. We’ve all been asking this question for years. Eldena Doubleca5t has some content I think is pretty good, both in terms of facts and in terms of proper citation and contextualizing (e.g. saying that the vast majority of the research for that Msscribe video came from the big journal expose and then from Fanlore and not trying to take credit or be vague about sources).

Generally, on youtube, to get noticed, you have to play the algorithm. To even want to bother to play the algorithm, you have to be the kind of person who wants to appeal to mainstream geeks and make money off of patreon. Fanfic fandom is already a niche flavor of geekdom, and AO3-y, tumblr-y queer ship-loving fanfic fandom is only one subset of overall fanfic fandom.

Also, generally speaking, Youtubers tend to be 10 years too young to personally know the fandom history they like to cover and, worse, they tend to be 10 years too young to treat it as something live people who will see their videos lived through. 2010 or 1970 might as well be 1670.

(I remember the change in mindset. It usually happens some time in your 30s, IMO. If you haven’t lived long enough to get lectured about Ancient History you were an eyewitness to by a dumb 20-something, you aren’t going to really get this one on a visceral level, but once you get it, it’s easier to spot yourself doing it to others.)

Sometimes, a podcast starts up that’s clearly by insiders, but they’re misogynist asshats, like that BAIT one. The rest of what’s out there is by clueless outsiders.

Honestly, even “fandom history” stuff on tumblr tends to be people doing a quick read of Fanlore and having no clue what kind of slant Fanlore might have simply due to who likes editing it.

I don’t expect to see a prominent youtuber who can explain fandom worth a damn any time soon.
