#Tales of Vesperia spoilers

every time i replay this game (which has been a lot), i think about this scene (and zagi in general) a lot. i have a lot of thoughts and headcanons about zagi as a whole, but i think a lot of zagi's interactions with yuri did stem from wanting to have some form of companionship. it was at nordopolica that became clear, i think (after yuri commented on zagi's strength on ragou's ship, i believe).

that's really not to say he went about it the right way, or that yuri was ever obliged to reciprocate, though part of me wonders whether zagi even knew how to properly make friends/companions, and his only means of communication was through combat (a running comment between my friend group being zagi's love language is sparring) — looking into further interactions (tarqaron comes to mind, where zagi was desperate to be the most important thing for yuri to focus on, even if it meant dooming the entirety of humanity). i often wonder if, to zagi, he perceived their fighting as a sign of strengthening their bond, and thought that yuri reciprocated the enjoyment he got from it. that clearly wasn't the case, but i think it adds a layer of tragedy to it: a one sided friendship (or relationship, depending on how you interpret zagi's comments) that meant a lot more to zagi than it ever did to yuri.

then again, i think there's a lot of tragedy behind zagi's character as a whole. i can, and will, ramble about that later on, though. it's also fitting my first proper post is about this damn cute assassin that occupies my mind more than he should.

Love the entrance scene to the Heracles with all my heart, it's great, but also genuinely how did those four make it there before the party did? There is no feasible way, no matter how you look at it.

Just beat Tales of Vesperia for the first time!! 😭

Good lord I did not know that getting all the Fell Arms before the final boss fight was gonna be such a mistake 😅 the first 2 phases of the fight were fine! I was level 70 for my party! Then the Fell Arms phase.....

But I did it!! 😭

I've played this game so many times, but technology shenanigans always meant I lost save data or something else would happen part way through

But here we are lads!!

I was kinda hoping we'd see more of the aftermath of changing the world so drastically like that, but the little art pieces throughout the credits were still good! So nice to see everyone adapting and exploring!

I was a crying mess the whole way 😅😂

Now I'm doing NG+ so we'll see how that goes!

casually decided that i will expand on what tales of vesperia didn't and give zagi more of a spotlight after realising that he could have been one of the best antagonists in the game (especially as a recurring one from start to finish) and could have had a huge impact and presence other than being "that one guy who keeps showing up and annoying the cast". i have so many thoughts on him and what could have led up to the events of ToV that i think kinda make him more interesting and far more sympathetic (whilst still keeping him in line with the zagi we're all used to). basically, looking into him more than a one dimensional character and expanding on the idea that zagi was more tragic and burdened by his talents than anything else. if i ever feel inspired enough, may make a fanfic off of the things i'll post.

i'm also a sucker for au's, and considered writing one out that's very near and dear to me for a bunch of reasons (some i may explain later tbh) where zagi does survive their final battle and actually aids the party in confronting duke and saving the world, because i feel like that has a lot of potential. i kinda wonder if anyone would be interested in seeing that too, though.

You know, I've played Tales of Vesperia a few times in my life. I know all the plot points and twists. It's my comfort game, I know 99.9% of it like the back of my hand.

And yet somehow this playthrough the Baction boss fight hits like it did the first time around. Is it because I'm still not fully used to the Definitive Edition compared to the original 360 version? Is it because I'm playing on Japanese? Have I just grown to become emotional more easily?

I don't know. But I do know I'm in emotional chaos right now. How am I supposed to do the secret mission when I can't see the screen through my tears? This isn't fair.

tov spoilers. watch out! im having thoughts regarding yuri and sodia again

the funny thing about yuri lowell is how he will say he isn't "letting it go" in regards to getting stabbed and nearly dying

but because sodia in his eyes failed to be the equal to give up everything for flynn (and even seeks out him of all people for help) hes like. i dont have time for you. im disappointed, even

flynn is stuck in a deadly situation and sodia, who didnt want her captain and all those people on hipionia at the time to die, seeked out yuri (by then she is aware he is alive because flynn also knew) BECAUSE she knows yuri would come running for flynn. and she finds that she cant do the same. she cant risk it all for flynn (and i cannot fault her for it, she maybe was hoping for an outcome where they dont have casualties)

what really frustrates yuri is that he feels he cant forever be at flynns side because of him seeing himself as someone whose presence could taint others' (and particularly) flynn's light. and he had chosen to kill people and do things no one wants to do because no one else would.

so i am assuming that between post-zaude and the scene in capua nor, yuri (at the back of his mind) rationalized that sodia was willing to do something as grave as kill him for being associated with flynn. yuri made the choice to kill before and it as a result has messed up how he perceives himself and his relationships with others (and he was already not doing great at this!). he did not like to commit murder but he doesn't regret it. he was hoping sodia probably was on a similar footing.

and yuri really strongly values making your own choice and living by it. he is a walking example of living by the choice you made for the other party members (granted, he makes some choices that end up being bad for his well-being. he isnt also making choice he actively WANTS to do.)

so given sodia backpedaled, yuri understood that the choice to kill him was not one she was willing to hold to, at least, not in the way yuri has dealt with his own grave choices? its clear that instead she regrets it a LOT. because it was an on-the-moment decision that she realizes she did only the moment yuri starts to fall. she is so shocked she is incapable of doing anything but look on in horror

she did not even lend him a hand!

besides the fact that yuri realizes that not even sodia is the equal flynn "deserves", this scene is a perfect encapsulation for yuri's state at that point in the game. he says something extremely vulnerable to sodia, which he probably does because he knows she wouldnt be able to say that to flynn or any of his friends. not only do his words reflect just how low he put himself down while placing flynn on an unfair pedestal, but how he also extends the unhealthy things he applies to himself ONTO others.

(yuri voice) how COME you regret stabbing me and how COME you dont nearly die for flynn on hipionia and instead seek help from ME if you really wanted me out of his sight.

something something "if youre willing to kill for him then you should also be willing to die for him". yuri are you okay

If he had only waited, Estelle and Flynn could’ve done something about Ragou and Cumore the right way.

But it’s also true they were bad people who deserved to be punished.

THANK YOU OP i can go wild. alright. I am here to share the word of Judith "Judy" Talesofvesperia!

So yes, the game itself strongly focuses on motifs of the night (it's worth mentioning Judith is not the only character of the jrpg party with strong moon associations) BUT it is in her fighting technique where you see the moon imagery really land in.

Judy is an aerial fighter, so it further adds to all the cool things she can do in the fight, sometimes you just see the full moon like a cool little effect!

And as has been mentioned in the readmore bits, her character is shrouded in mystery for most of the game, and even then you never quite are able to entirely parse out her true feelings 100% of the time. Based on a small sidequest in game, she even receives the "poker face" title. She is very much like the night that rides around for the sake of trying to help the world in whatever way she can.

It is not new to have the moon be a solitary figure in the night, requiring the light of the sun in order to reflect and shine itself. Judith has a track of her own in TOV that is called "Judith, Portrait of Solitude" . until she had met the party, she only had her dragon buddy with her for many years in the wake of a tragedy in her home town that led her to taking up arms

Bandai Namco is allergic to utilizing Judith in proper, so many people even within the Tales Of community for one reason or another do not give her enough of a spotlight, but I think this poll is the perfect oppurtunity to at least tell people of her! Even if jrpgs aren't someone's flavor, knowing about Judy my friend Judy is already a win for me.

PS shes a bit of a freak (likes sorbet in the blizzard). she loves to fight to the point of bejng deemed a maniac, but she can also turn around and call herself all delicate. she is hilarious
