[Eddie in a depression spiral after the (alleged) death of his spouse when the door to his shoddy apartment bursts open...]

Frances: Yoohoo, Brockilicious~

Carnage: Hello, father.

Cletus: Guess what--we lived bitch.

Eddie: ...Oh thank God.

Cletus: Huh?

Eddie: I've been so lonely.

Cletus: ...You know we came here to kill you right?

Eddie [*grinning madly*]: Well then... when do we start?

Cletus: Eddie, you are honestly freaking me out here.

Eddie: So, are you going to kill me, or what?

Cletus: Well, if you insist.

Cletus: [*Stabs him*]

Cletus [alarmed]: You're not healing.

Carnage: He's not here. Venom. He's not here.

Eddie: [*Weeping silently, not scared for his life but the reminder of the raw wound of Venom's loss*]

[*Shared looks between the murder crew*]

[Cletus sits down next to him]

Eddie [impatiently]: Well are you gonna get on with it? C'mon already. Just do it!

[Eddie shivers, feels a deep want and self-hatred when Carnage heals the stab wound, for a moment they're connected tantalizing, the feeling of being a host again but it's gone again in the next instant]

Eddie: Oh got to go for torture first, of course. It's only what I deserve, treating him like a burden in his final moments--

[*Cletus puts the knife away*]

Eddie: Wait, what are you doing... [*Frances walks away*] hey, where are you going?

Cletus: Well... now we don't feel like it.

Eddie: Oh fuck you.

Cletus: Yeah, fuck me. Do you want to talk about it?

Eddie: No. ...yes.... I can't.

Cletus: Okay.

Eddie: I'm not supposed to talk about it. It's illegal.

Cletus: Oh yes, I'd never do something illegal. And I'm sure you wouldn't either which is why I don't have this massive hickey you left on my neck--

[Has obvious bite mark scar from being beheaded via Venom, making Eddie all the more nostalgic for the good old days]

[*Frances looking around in his kitchen*]

Frances: You got any soup here? Let's make soup.

Cletus: Yes, that's a great idea, honey.

Eddie: It's in the... yeah.

Cletus: Hey Eddie, do you mind if we like... stay here? You see we were just planning on killing you and taking your place tonight--

Eddie: Like, you can still do that if you want. Take it, whatever. Do whatever you like, I don't give a fuck.

Carnage [cheerfully]: From what I understand they were going to enjoy their marital relations on your bed too.

Eddie: I seriously do not care.

Cletus: Cool. Still not killing you though.

Eddie: Asshole.

Cletus: We're right here if you wanna tell us your story, Eddie. No judging, honest.

Y’all, it’s that time again…

… Time to discuss the latest chapter of Spy x Family!

Obviously, there will be spoilers.

So a lot happened this chapter, but what I’m intent on unpacking is Anya’s botched fortune-telling session.

So while I’m not that proficient in tarot card reading, my sister and SO are far more knowledgeable. So I asked them.

Forgive me if I make any mistakes, I’m still learning this and am by no means an authority.

Breaking it down very broadly:

There are two kinds of tarot cards, ones of the major arcana, and ones of the minor arcana. Minor arcana represent every day life events/experiences; so for example, minor arcana could tell a person who’s being read about things such as how interpersonal relationships (romantic and non-romantic) may turn out. Each suit and number in the minor arcana mean something specific; each suit, for example, represents the four elements. Wands are fire, cups are water, swords are air, and pentacles are earth. The numbers basically represent how you’re looking at the subject of the card. Major arcana represent complex subjects, meant to divine major life events— cruxes in one’s destiny.

Further, the orientation of the cards matter a lot. If the cards face the tarot reader, then the card is read as is— that is to say, the card’s meaning is unchanged. However, if the card is facing the individual being read, then the card’s meaning is reversed. The Fool no longer means opportunity/potential, but now represents lost opportunities or squandered potential, for example.

On the table above, Anya has two major arcana cards and five minor arcana cards. Three of the cards are upside down. Her cards are:

Three of Wands (the card covered by Melinda’s hand): Minor arcana. Upside down. Typically represents momentum/confidence/growth/expansion. Wands also represent fire/passion. The number three also means that you are looking to something or anticipating something optimistically. However, as the card is upside down, it is read as the opposite of what it means; so where Anya may have had momentum, this means she’ll stall and likely lose momentum/confidence.

Three of Swords: Minor arcana. Typically represents a sorrowful experience/tragedy/loss. It could be a lost relationship, it could be the death of a loved one. It could just be something sad. Swords represent air/intellect, mental processes, struggles challenges, etc.

Four of Cups: Minor arcana. Typically represents the need to re-evaluate your current perspective and state of mind. Cups represent water/emotions or emotional state. The number four represents things becoming less abstract and more productive/stable/purposeful; the number four basically means order. THIS IS THE CARD MELINDA CHOSE TO REPRESENT ANYA’S PRESENT.

The Star: Major arcana. Upside down. Typically represents hope/renewal/healing/optimism. However, as the card is upside down, its meaning is reversed. So it instead represents despair/self-doubt and being stuck. From what I understand, the numbers are of less consequence with the major arcana, and we never see the number on The Star anyway. THIS IS THE CARD MELINDA CHOSE TO REPRESENT ANYA’S FUTURE.

Death: Major arcana. Typically represents major change, the end of one thing and the beginning of another. Again, I don’t know of what consequence (if any) the numbers have on major arcana, but as we can see here, the number is 13. THIS IS THE ONLY CARD LEFT FOR THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE, SO PRESUMABLY MELINDA CHOSE THIS TO REPRESENT ANYA’S PAST.

Ace of Cups: Minor arcana. Upside down. Typically represents joy/inner peace, but also the start of love or a new relationship. The Ace is the trump card and typically represents total success/luck/hard work. As it is upside down, it means that Anya won’t find success in forging a relationship, and that there will be contention/acrimony.

Ten of Pentacles: Minor arcana. Typically represents wealth/security, family/legacy. The ten represents the conclusion of a cycle/event.

There are several ways in which these cards can be interpreted.

While Anya asked Melinda to give her a reading in the context of connecting with Damian better, we can also interpret her cards through the lens of theories regarding her experiences/background and that the cards may be indicative of either parallels between the two of them, or means by which Anya can leverage said experiences to get closer to Damian. Furthermore, we have to take into account that, not only are the reading of tarot cards a matter of interpretation, but also not definitive (if you believe in tarot cards/divination).

I have my own personal theories about what some of these cards mean to Anya, (side-eyeing that Three of Swords so. hard.) but only time will tell how relevant they are, and if they even mean anything to the story’s progression.

the kids are (not) alright.

the finished lineup of the wormwood siblings after many hours of manic brainstorming, so here's a short description of each:

tristan wormwood (24):

the eldest of the wormwood brood, tristan was, for a lack of better words, an oops baby. while he was very bright and believed to be on the path of academic success, he was a quiet and unassuming child. tristan was very protective of his younger siblings and was prone to put their needs before his, taking his duty as the older brother and hector's helper seriously. after being traumatically separated from their parents and facing a bleak reality without them, the teenaged tristan couldn't take the pressure of being a caregiver for his siblings, so he coped by withdrawing from everyone. his grades dropped severely, and he eventually stopped going to school, instead staying locked in his room for the next 5 years. now as a young adult, tristan has a tendency to wander around or stay inside his aunt's residence, and his relationship with his siblings continue to be strained, especially with cei and percy, who take their respective anger and frustration out on him. he has an on-again, off-again romantic relationship with a girl named ysolt. tristan took after his mother elaine and her fear of commitment, so it doesn't come to a surprise that he would flake out every now and again. fun facts: 1. at 6'4, tristan is both the tallest sibling and tallest relative of the wormwood clan 2. as the firstborn son, he is the first (but not the last) male descendant of the 300-year-old matrilineal family tree 3. tristan is the Denial stage of the five stages of grief 4. tristan strongly resembles elaine, so he avoids mirrors

cei wormwood (23):

the second son of the wormwood brood, cei (pronounced as 'kay') was born in the same calendar year as tristan with the intention being that tristan wouldn't be alone and have a sibling to play with. the opposite of tristan personality-wise, cei was an energetic, boisterous, and mischievous child who often cried for elaine to come home. because he was so close in age to tristan, the two brothers were thick as thieves for the years before their younger siblings' arrivals. he always followed after tristan and relied on his instructions, even if cei would break them. left adrift after the family was torn apart, cei was lost and confused. with tristan no longer involving himself with the siblings, cei's anchor he relied heavily on was gone. for the 5 years during tristan's self-isolation, cei was no longer a happy-go-lucky boy, but instead he was full of resentment and grief, and so he had to step up to the plate to be his siblings' caregiver. cei grew up angry at the world, and that anger would be misdirected to his siblings. but everyone knew the people he was angry at the most were his parents. now as an adult, cei is a student of the studium's faculty of medicine department on the behest of his aunt, at the same time working his way through school by taking night shifts at the last stand. cei is focused on creating the perfect mix of good food and good nutrition, not just for the betterment of sharlayan society, but also wanting to capture the warm and nostalgic feelings of his mother's home-cooked meals so he and his siblings could come together and enjoy dinners like they used to. fun facts: 1. cei is the only one with brown eyes, a feature he inherited from elaine 2. cei is the only one who can cook among the siblings, based on his years of being raised by their grandmother and her 'terrible' food. he often prepares their meals and takes into account what they like or don't like 3. cei was the most affected by tristan's withdrawal from the siblings, and he likes to throw hurtful comments and insults to his brother whenever he comes around, which tends to lead to arguments between the two 4. cei is the Anger of the five stages of grief

percival wormwood (19):

the only daughter and middle child of the brood, percy was originally believed to be a boy before their birth by elaine, but hector named them percival because he liked the name so much he couldn't imagine calling them anything else. stuck between 4 brothers, percy struggled to fit in, and as a result, became more of a tomboy to not feel left out. percy was extremely close to hector as a child, often being called his shadow for how often they would cling to him, perhaps in a childlike attempt to receive more attention. despite what their brothers may feel, percy carries the most guilt over what they believe caused the fall of the family, with the physical scar to prove it. for most of their teenage years, percy was used as a scapegoat for familial disagreements, their pity, and their brothers' constant fighting, and at 19 years old, percy wants nothing more to do with them, even if it means risking splitting the fractured unit further apart. as of now, percy is at a loss of what to do next. having no love for school, percy seems to be heading in the same direction as their brother tristan, something their great-aunts seem loathe to admit out loud. after being a mediator for their older brothers for most of their young life, percy wants out. fun facts: 1. percy is the only sibling with green eyes, a recessive trait from their mother's side. they resemble hector more than the others 2. percy is the Bargaining of the five stages of grief 3. percy is the only sibling that has an innate ability for magecraft, a talent carried by the wormwood clan for generations, but they never pursued learning more beyond simple parlor tricks 4. percy's nose scar is the result of hector's mental breakdown caused by halmarut's corruption (something the siblings did not know at the time), after he lashed out at them with a knife

kvornan & kiernan wormwood (16):

with their arrival being a bit of a surprise in the midst of hector and elaine's relationship troubles, the twins are the last of the wormwood brood, with kvornan being 4 minutes older than kiernan. while they were too young to remember the troubled times of the family unit, the boys carry some measure of guilt in their own ways. kvornan tries to keep his siblings together as best as he can, while kiernan keeps himself at a distance. regardless, the twins have a decent relationship with cei and percy, the four of them being closer than their eldest brother tristan. they have vague memories of their parents, and while their older siblings envy this fact, the twins envy them in turn for having the opportunity to know their parents better than them, as they usually have nothing to add whenever cei and percy discuss the more happier times. currently, kvornan is excelling in school, but kiernan tends to fall behind his more studious twin in favor of daydreaming. they now live with their brother cei in his apartment in sharlayan, but they don't need any supervision as they learned to be independent early in life. fun facts: 1. elaine wasn't there when the twins were born, so their names are different from their siblings. their names come from the wormwood clan's amdapori heritage 2. kvornan and kiernan's grief stages are flipped: kvornan is Acceptance despite being the 4th child, and kiernan is Depression despite being the last born 3. kiernan is prone to periods of selective mutism, so kvornan often has to talk for him 4. the twins are both 5'6, but are projected to grow taller than tristan in a few years

would love to hear more about your take on the "people have the obligation to help themselves and get better, if they dont they are bad" thing because you’re sooo right

i just don't think it is as simply and as linear as social media trends make it seem, i think humans are becoming more and more self-invested, self-centered and therefore isolated. i think we dehumanize others and attribute meaningless labels... "red flags this, yellow flags this" i mean, what?

on the internet, particularly tumblr, there was an entire period of romanticizing decay and victimization which was ridiculously bad and not promoter of any type of growth be it for the individual or the relationships they maintained. but the 180º extreme switch that happened is frankly as bad. i believe there's a whole difference between accounting for your mistakes and realizing certain behaviours are not okay with others and TRYING to do better while also giving context to your own struggles in certain aspects in comparison to the whole "maybe you're just toxic and should be put down or smth". like, what in the world? sometimes it just feels like people stopped being people and stopped seeing others as people just like them. i feel like we are just assets. where is the humanism? why have we stopped treating people as people????? are you a full fledged human without your "faults" and "vices"????? or are you just emulating a persona that will never exist and therefore will never to fully connect to others??? why do others prefer to build a relationship with a persona instead of a real human... its easier to manage relationships that dont truly exist, but isnt it as easy as it is isolating?

no one should go to therapy forced by others. no one should take medication forced by others. functionality and stability should not be reached by imposing threats on an human being. in the end that's not helping anyone. its as ive said, i started taking a medication for others and not for me, it did nothing besides making me worse. however, other people were eager to be more human to me because i was taking medication. while im exactly the same, other people have changed the way they interact with me due to a pill. why?

not to talk about the "ugly" mentally ill. the mentally ill that has trouble managing emotions, the mentally ill that has a personality disorder, the mentally ill that can't maintain relationships as well as others because they need their time. the upset mentally ill the traumatized mentally ill the raging mentally ill. as if everything is treated by medication and therapy. as if it isn't a luck to get an actual competent therapist. as if, in going to therapy and it failing, you just spent hours retraumatizing and reliving everything again for nothing. but well. you went to therapy. you pass the check on good mentally ill. doesn't matter if it changed anything or made things worse, you showed you were compromised to others in your life. now you deserve being treated like a human. now if you have a bad day they can tell you "talk to your therapist" and excuse your grumpiness or your suicidal ideation.

most of healing happens in the secure relationships you maintain during your life. except now, talking to your friend about a problem you're having is labeled as "dumping" and is regarded as an orange yellow flag because "thats not what a friend is for". if anything happens negative you should not share with your friends or companion or family, they have a lot going on already, why dont you go and see therapist?

like for fucks sake. that means we dont maintain relationships. we maintain transactions.

as the token "friend who is into folk music" there is nothing worse than having a well-meaning friend recommend you a "folk" song from whatever fantasy show/movie/video game they've been watching/playing because first of all- holy shit that is so kind of you to think about me. and now i have to break your heart by not liking whatever music you're about to play to me.

Oh dear...

Alex is attending one of the most prestigious magic academies in the country, on the orders of his parents of course. Even though Laiz Fier Academy reviles even the name of the only type of magic he's ever been good at. His parents swore he'd find another specialty here, and he'd let himself believe them, like the idiot he is. He's scraping by in classes. Barely. At least he's managed to make a couple of friends and figure out how to sneak into the library stacks to find books that will actually help him hone his skills.

However, Alex realizes now there's a reason why it's not recommended to do your first summoning alone. Because, while he does manage to summon a demon, it doesn't exactly end up in the silvery urn he'd laid in the center of the pentagram.

So now he has a talking, demonic Furby to hide. One that, despite its too-wide eyes and disconcertingly smooth voice, Alex thinks he might be developing feelings for.

Here are the issues I have with the book. Since it's a lot, I'll try to keep it as short as possible and only mention my biggest problems with it. So this list is not complete and I could write pages about it.

Let me start by saying that a good autobiography (or any book that highlights a real life person) should be balanced. It should not glorify that person or pretend that person is a god and without mistakes. I also have no problem with critizing Ze, because, let's face it, yes he made mistakes and fucked things up in the past and not every war decision or speech or whatever was good or perfect. The point is: the critique should be fair and balanced (this obviously doesn't apply to bad people in general and the books about them; but since Ze isn't a bad person...you get what I want to say). The portrayal of Ze in the book is anything but fair or balanced. Or true, for that matter (unless literally every person in Ze's life and who knows him better, including the Kvartal fam, Olena, Andriy or people like them, have been lying to everyone for decades).

Throughout the whole book Shuster does say that Ze is Ukrainian (and Jewish) but also always tries to paint him as an "Ukrainian Russian" - so Ze is actually Russian despite being a "Ukrainian" (basically using one of Russia's Propaganda lies). Ze is basically a stubborn "Ukrainian" who kind of deserves all the hate and arrogance he gets from "real Russians" during KVN times (and later) because Ze is an insufferable asshole during his KVN times. And that Russian treated Ukrainian (or from other former Soviet Union countries) teams badly (including racist remarks, looking down on them, treating them like slaves, insulting them, not giving them a fair chance,...) teams awfully is, in Ze's case, deserved. Because Ze was oh so focused on always winning - no matter what and the cost.

Speaking of KVN: According to Shuster, Ze was terrible as a person during his first years of stardom. A maniac who only lived for applause and needs it to survive and was willing to do absolutely everything to win and beat other teams. Because, you know, he's so obsessed with winning. To a point were even he gives a flying fuck about the Kvartal team and their members (Shuster basically hints that they all disliked Ze and he was some kind of group dictator who only wanted to work and win all the time and was reckless and took to many risks and almost destroyed everyones lifes). When Shuster finds something positive to write about, he quotes people from Kvartal but what he quotes are just general statements or people saying what KVN was like during the 1990s and early 2000s. The moment Shuster writes about Ze and was he (allegedly) like during this time it's almost only "team members" and "people who knem him" and "classmates" and all that stuff - so anon sources. Or it's just Shuster telling stuff without saying what his source is or him just have feelings and thoughts and drawing conclusions. If people get named they - surprise, surprise - have a lot of times bad things to say about Ze or are people who we never ever have heard of as being part of Ze's life. Btw, it's not very hard to guess who the "team member", who talked the KVN years and adds a lot of negative talk about Ze, is... . Denys (yes, THAT Denys) contributed to the book with pictures, so chances are high he also talked to Shuster. If you ever wondered if the asshole would ever get over the fact that he fucked up and Ze kicked his ass out of the group - well, the answer is no. He now just tries to cash in on Ze. And since we are talking about Denys' obvious contribution to the book - he, once again, gave out private photos. How much we all wanna bet that he, once again, didn't ask for consent?!

Shuster also tries to paint Ze's family in a bad light. The father a tyrann who sacrified his wife's (Mama Ze) health for his job and money. Also rarely being at home and giving a fuck about his son and family. Mama Ze spoiling her child and making him entitled. Both to unloving and hard and more or less making Ze's life a living hell. Also that Ze's family was suddenly rich. Not to mention indirectly questioning the trauma his family had to go through (and Ze talked about in the past) under Stalin and the Nazis and family members that are suddenly alive (despite Ze stating in the past that they were dead). Also, Shuster sees in the childhood and family of Ze a part of the explanation why Ze is such a horrible person today, to stubborn to just give up and end the fight (and all that nonsense) and won't win this war. Because the parents put Ze in all kind of activities without him finishing any of it but letting him believe he can do everything and always demanding excellent perfomance in every aspect of his life (to keep it short). So of cooourse Ze had to grow up into a maniac who can't loose and always continues despite what people may tell him and who needs the constant validation and love from others.

There are also a ton of negative remarks about Ze as father and husband in regard of his own family. Not to mentiont hat a ton of informations are factually not correct. Things like birth dates or dates in general, how and where Ze's family lived (missing important context several times), Ze basically being as awful as his father, Ze not giving a fuck about his families safety during the war (Olena was the voice of reason who protects the poor, poor children because their father just wants them back for egoistic reasons and doesn't care about their safety) or not seeing anything concerning about his sons military obsession and instead fueling it (again, it's the poor poor wife who has to protect the son from the awful father), Ze giving zero fucks about his relationship with Olena right from the start and that poor, poor, poor woman always staying behind and having to go through hell and hate because of Ze's maniac ambitions and facing an unsave future in the early 2000s because Ze was so full of himself and had the biggest ego,... . (reading several parts you would think that this "poor, poor woman" is trapped in some abuse situation or Ze somehow tied her to himself and the whole marriage is fake and there is no love) (also Olena simultaniously romantizing things and her life and Ukraine but also being the only who who sees the truth about Ze or several parts of their lives but, of course, can't tell her terrible husband because bad, bad Ze) Also Shuster indirectly claiming that Ze and Olena lied about their relationship and they didn't date for eight years but for a shorter period of time. Because suddenly Olena also was a part of KVN long before Ze (???) and was essentially just his work buddy and friend for a while and somehow and for whatever reason they ended up in a relationship one day. (Also prepare yourself to read about a new version of the "Basic Instinct" story we never have heard before...and Ze and Olena never said.)

Btw, the way Ze is portrayed during his KVN years is essentially with little variation how he's portrayed in later stages of his life. Including his presidency and the war (I'm not going to write several more paragraphes because I think you get the picture Shuster tries to paint of Ze).

Only one thing about Ze's war portrayal: Shuster swings back and forth between Ze as wanna be dictator who will turn Ukraine into something bad as soon as the war is over (and is already starting with that) and who already makes his own rules and gives zero fucks about people and is only interested in his own fame and people applauding him and all that stuff. And Ze being the worst President ever because the war and the current state of Ukraine (which is, of course, very bad and they are about to collapse and loose and big Russia and winning and blablabla) are somehow also his fault. Yes, Shuster really manages to make Ze (and with that Ukraine) partly guilty.

Throughout the whole book he also, sometimes more obvious sometimes hidden, Shuster portrays Ukraine in the worst way possible. He does mention how "bad" Russia is but somehow justifying it several times or leaving out important facts and, once again, context. Also the portrayal of Putin, especially in comparsion with how he writes about Ze, is a joke.

Oh, and, the "inside look in the bunker" life Shuster used for his marketing campaign and that the claim of the book - yeah, bullshit. It's nothing now and anon and all that stuff. Also, once again, portraying Ze in a bad light. Like, yeah, the first weeks of war affected him but to such a worrying point (according to Shuster) that Ze was actually unfit to rule any longer as President but continued (because, you know, he loves power sooo much...). And now he's the mini dictator of Bankova who is always grumpy and changed into a (an even more) awful person and... .

What can I say at the end?! As mentioned earlier, the book has a ton of fake news and wrong facts. It's incredibly poorly researched - if sources exist at all. A lot of times it's Shuster just sharing his feelings or thougths or conclusions or interpretations or whatever. Or just saying things without context. Or writing stuff without giving sources. And to be honest, in some parts it also feels like that Shuster just made stuff up.

If you have no idea about Ze and his life or know very little - that's not the book to get informed. If you know a bit more about Ze, you will surprisingly often feel that certain parts of "exclusive interviews" or "when I talked with XYZ" are strangely familiar...with interviews we all know from Ze's (and several other people) past...because it is these interviews. Just a lot of times missing context, shortening what was said, adding stuff or giving it a new meaning.

Speaking of using old stuff: Shuster also really used his old articles to include them in the book...to a point where it's basically almost word for word.

Overall, the book is in large parts poorly written (so poorly that you wonder how he became a TIME journalist in the first place).

In the end, you probably haven't learned anything new or interesting about Ze, his life, the war or Ukraine. When we talk about Ze, I may have read one, maybe two new things I haven't read before (but questioning both of them and will do research if they are true or just made up by Shuster). It's over 300 sites of wasted paper and ink. I know articles who did a better job than this "book". It's a waste of time and money. And in the end it's a Pro-Russia Propaganda book, trying to undermine the support for Ukraine and hurt Ze and his image (as well as Ukraine's). Shuster tries to be subtle at his try to do this but he isn't not. He tries to come off as critical thinker who wants to portray a balanced picture of Ze and also writes about the sides no one dares to talk about. But nothing about this is balanced. It's just 300+ sites of trashing Ze and backstabbing him and using every possible way. Same applies to Ukraine.
