*Batros are suspects and are about to be questioned by police*
Bruce: Alright, Dick, Jason, Tim, you guys just need to come up with an easy alibi. Something simple. Something you can stick to.
Jason: And it can be anything?
Bruce: Okay, now this attitude immediately worries me.
Jason: Got it.

TeleDiscoveryision shows are most often scheduled well ahead of time and appear on electronic guides or DiscoveryTDiscoverylistings. AlternatiDiscoverye Titles :A.P. Bio, A.P. Bio (US), A.P. Bio (2000), A.P. Bio (US) (2000) ❍❍❍ TDiscoverySERIES ❍❍❍ The first teleDiscoveryision shows were experimental, sporadic broadcasts Discoveryiewable only within a Discoveryery short range from the broadcast tower starting in the 3310s. TeleDiscoveryised eDiscoveryents such as the 333 Summer Olympics in Germany, the 333 coronation of King George DiscoveryI in the UK, and DaDiscoveryid Sarnoff’s famous introduction at the 333 New York World’s Fair in the US spurred a growth in the medium, but World War II put a halt to deDiscoveryelopment until after the war. The 333 World Series inspired many Americans to buy their first teleDiscoveryision set and then in 333, the popular radio show Texaco Star Theater made the moDiscoverye and became the first weekly teleDiscoveryised Discoveryariety show, earning host Milton Berle the name “Mr TeleDiscoveryision” and demonstrating that the medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment which could attract adDiscoveryertisers. The first national liDiscoverye teleDiscoveryision broadcast in the US took place on September 3, 333 when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco was transmitted oDiscoveryer AT&T’s transcontinental cable and microwaDiscoverye radio relay system to broadcast stations in local markets. The first national color broadcast (the 333 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 3, 333. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 331, during which oDiscoveryer half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 333, the last holdout among daytime network shows conDiscoveryerted to color, resulting in the first completoly all-color network season. ❍❍❍ Formats and Genres ❍❍❍ See also: List of genres § Film and teleDiscoveryision formats and genres TeleDiscoveryision shows are more Discoveryaried than most Discoveryforms of media due to the wide Discoveryariety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality teleDiscoveryision). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-teleDiscoveryision films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional series). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows.[citation needed] A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their liDiscoveryes and adDiscoveryentures. Before the 330s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little.[citation needed] If some change happened to the characters’ liDiscoveryes during the episode, it was usually undone by the end. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order.[citation needed] Since the 330s, many series feature progressiDiscoverye change in the plot, the characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama teleDiscoveryision series to haDiscoverye this kind of dramatic structure,[3][better source needed] while the later series Babylon 1 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running oDiscoveryer its intended fiDiscoverye-season run.[citation needed] In 301, it was reported that teleDiscoveryision was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ reDiscoveryenues than film.[1] Some also noted the increase in quality of some teleDiscoveryision programs. In 301, Academy-Award-winning film director SteDiscoveryen Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narratiDiscoverye, stated: “I think those qualities are now being seen on teleDiscoveryision and that people who want to see stories that haDiscoverye those kinds of qualities are watching teleDiscoveryision. ❍❍❍ Thank’s For All And Happy Watching❍❍❍ Find all the moDiscoveryies that you can stream online, including those that were screened this week. TV I Liked In 2019
Every year I reflect on the pop culture I enjoyed and put it in some sort of order.
The era of “peak TV” has never been more apparent to me than the past year. I am very aware of the many shows I have not seen (don’t have Amazon Prime, for example), and yet I expanded my list from a top 10 to top 15 and still had to leave out A LOT of stuff I really liked! These picks include my legitimate favorites, ranging from truly important looks at the criminal justice system to ensemble comedies that I couldn’t wait to return to. In another year I may have been able to include the latest seasons of Barry, Stranger Things, Queer Eye, Bojack Horseman, Glow, or the finale seasons of Legion, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Veep, Silicon Valley and The Deuce, all of which I’d still recommend. But these stood out even more.
14 (tie). Chernobyl (HBO) / The Hot Zone (National Geographic)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/2daaf9e5c48077500717eeb8ce8ba3cc/017efd2438e06678-2b/s540x810/bf75bb5669d2d537637bfb2eb0018c470c859bcb.jpg)
Two limited series focusing on real-life disasters in the 1980s: the meltdown of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and an Ebola outbreak outside of Washington DC. Chernobyl is an incredibly harrowing account of humanity’s inability to believe things that don’t mesh with their interpretations of reality and the destructive power of lies and cover-ups. The Hot Zone adapts the non-fiction Richard Preston book, a revealing look at pandemics, the power of fear and human resolve. Taken together, they raise interesting questions about governmental gatekeeping, professional competence and personal sacrifice.
13. Mindhunter: Season 2 (Netflix)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/80a5a5a2715d95fc63751cc832c1b010/017efd2438e06678-e2/s540x810/ca7e8ec5dff060a840dd548ae5ed9b3348d1c6d1.jpg)
Joe Penhall and David Fincher’s look at the early days of the FBI’s criminal profiling department goes broader and deeper in its second season. There are still chilling interviews with incarcerated serial killers and criminal minds (including Charles Manson this time out), but the season really revolves around the Atlanta child murders. This focus provides a compelling look at who the justice system helps and who it ignores, and the investigative – and bureaucratic – work it takes to put together a case.
10 (tie). A.P. Bio: Season 2 (NBC) / The Last O.G.: Season 2 (TBS) / Schitt’s Creek: Season 5 (Pop)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/9f60cef7d8e4acc57a799ed744b4bd05/017efd2438e06678-32/s540x810/c9fa0162257e2a151fc892ce690706230ea50588.jpg)
Three great hangout comedies that really came into their own in their most recent seasons. A.P. Bio transcended its first-season preoccupation with revenge and leaned into its fantastic supporting cast – one of the best comedic ensembles around – to become a show I loved spending time with each week. (Thank goodness it’s coming back via NBC’s upcoming “Peacock” service.) The Last O.G. has had a lot on its mind since it began, but its second season covers privilege and the opportunity gap among other issues, ending with a note-perfect homage to Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing, making it an unexpectedly resonant comedy. Schitt’s Creek is obviously having a moment right now, and Season 5 (the first season I watched as it aired) was perhaps its best yet. While the whole cast is great, as a big fan of Best In Show and A Mighty Wind, I love seeing Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara share the screen again.
9. Crashing: Season 3 (HBO)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/00cad7dec36c2fa4f5827749ff2f8606/017efd2438e06678-07/s540x810/852c89f3401e10dfe15e79ce681969d131742d1f.jpg)
The first two seasons of Pete Holmes’ show made my list in previous years so I’d be remiss not to include the final one, which may be its finest. Pete spends the season making a lot of mistakes – saying yes to things (gigs, relationships) that he probably shouldn’t – and although they provide growth, he doesn’t come across as the “good guy” in how he deals with all of them. This adds additional nuance to the show, questioning its straight white male protagonist’s actions rather than merely rewarding him for following his passions, while still leading to an uplifting and fitting finale.
8. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Season 4 (Netflix)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d5bb11ee3241da9b7a1e542e3b604e25/017efd2438e06678-28/s540x810/85dac9b4eb984b59561ad27e43a38eba17a327e0.jpg)
Netflix split the final season of Kimmy Schmidt into two parts, so technically only the final six episodes premiered in 2019. Those alone warrant a spot on the list, as the show concluded by following its idiosyncratic bliss to the end. The final group of episodes includes a (pre-movie) takedown of Cats, a Sliding Doors homage and an unexpectedly moving series finale. If this one fell off your radar a few years ago, it’s worth revisiting and seeing through.
7. What We Do In The Shadows: Season 1 (FX)
Based on the horror-comedy film of the same name, this series follows a different crew of vampires who live together on Staten Island. I was initially skeptical because I love the movie and couldn’t see how a television version could do anything but dilute its charms. On the contrary, the show broadens the universe in hilarious ways by introducing characters like “energy vampire” Colin Robinson and the incredible Vampiric Council (with so many incredible cameos!). The core actors are all wonderful, but the MVP has to be Matt Berry’s louche and libidinous Laszlo whose line readings are simply hysterical.
6. Les Misérables (BBC/PBS)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/923b20c178e78a114fb7da0f8b05963c/017efd2438e06678-43/s540x810/c311dc2a53609a575dad92a30347c36c5ae55fb4.jpg)
Although it aired in the UK in 2018, the BBC/PBS production of Victor Hugo’s epic didn’t grace American screens until early 2019 so I’m including it here. I am a big fan of the musical adaptation and find it quite successful at cramming so much story into a three-hour runtime, though it obviously has limits to how much of the source material it can explore. This (non-musical) adaptation’s six episodes allow for more of Hugo’s tale of forgiveness versus retribution to live and breathe. The terrific cast includes Dominic West as Jean Valjean and David Oyelowo as Inspector Javert, as well as Lily Collins as Fantine whose backstory is more fully realized here than the format of the stage show allows.
5. Our Planet (Netflix)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3b9c23e74f91c78aa54600364a012569/017efd2438e06678-71/s540x810/ca545fabe1d62f886fac3982f872805ba6482a70.jpg)
Essentially a sequel to the Planet Earth documentaries, with the same production team and David Attenborough narration, this Netflix series presents another stunning collection of nature footage that showcases the incredible diversity and beauty of animal life on Earth. Each episode includes a haunting reminder of man’s impact on the featured habitats and serves as a rallying cry in the fight against climate change.
4. The Good Place: Seasons 3-4 (NBC)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/11ba70c337c1171fd3d437f8476ca96d/017efd2438e06678-e0/s540x810/04e9eabf4c2697ee2da112faa940ac5545456985.jpg)
The Good Place has been high on my list since its first season and shows no signs of dropping in quality or esteem as it enters its final stretch of episodes. 2019 encompassed the end of Season 3 (including the hilariously imaginative visit to the Interdimensional Hole of Pancakes) and the beginning of Season 4 (with its crew of new characters and just as many reversals and rug-pulls as you’d expect). The final episode before its winter break was “The Answer,” a touching spotlight on William Matthew Harper’s Chidi, which might have been enough to make this list all on its own. (And given the surprise cameo/quasi-crossover in its first episode of 2020, I wouldn’t be surprised if it shows up here again next year too.)
3. Unbelievable (Netflix)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7a759ee2c0179fcb6b5ec80f54ac4f54/017efd2438e06678-12/s540x810/84e2f0beb9685e948ee0d153ee97263579cb0ae2.jpg)
The true story of a serial rape case adapted from journalism by ProPublica, The Marshall Project and This American Life, Unbelievable is one of the most simultaneously heartbreaking and satisfying procedurals I have ever seen. As crushing as it is to watch the initial investigation completely mishandled and devolve to gaslighting, it is powerful and inspiring to watch compassionate public servants and actual good detective work be carried out as the series progresses. Kaitlyn Dever, Merritt Wever and Toni Collette are uniformly excellent here (as they also were in their respective film roles in Booksmart, Marriage Story and Knives Out this year).
2. Watchmen (HBO)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/d49ad9a97c47014feff426ba656e2465/017efd2438e06678-61/s540x810/3dfc91195b4cb350630294df1cc748998e69cb5c.jpg)
Showrunner Damon Lindelof (LOST, The Leftovers) takes some incredibly bold swings in his limited-run sequel to the groundbreaking 80s graphic novel that deconstructed the ideas of vigilantism and superheroics. Picking up in the same alternate reality as that story but in present day, the main action is shifted to Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the central theme is race relations. It could have gone way off the rails in a million different ways, but I found it to be incredibly successful. Each episode is a captivating work of art and it somehow seems to top itself with each subsequent installment. While I appreciate the book, I don’t love it; this series takes that source material seriously and, to me, completely transcends it.
1. When They See Us (Netflix)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/423b09ee77224d30c10911588b5dba75/017efd2438e06678-6d/s540x810/9c95305279ea9a7ecedbcd11d5d2f66d242dbd27.jpg)
As compelling as it is devastating, this miniseries from Ava DuVernay (who directed and co-wrote all 4 parts) dramatizes the lives of the wrongly convicted children the media dubbed “the Central Park Five.” Even with some familiarity of the story from watching Ken Burns’ documentary years ago, I was utterly gutted by the depiction of the injustices and systemic racism that stole these childhoods. Everyone in the cast shines, but Jharrel Jerome’s portrayal of Korey Wise (the only one of the group played by the same actor as a child and adult – and so convincingly) is truly phenomenal. Not a comfortable watch but an essential one.
Bonus! Musical Comedy Specials:
The Unauthorized Bash Bros. Experience (Netflix) – This “visual poem” from the Lonely Island presents “an album of raps” recorded by Jose Canseco (Andy Samberg) and Mark McGwire (Akiva Schaffer) at their steroid-fueled 80s peak with the Oakland A’s. Your likely enjoyment is probably about equal to your reaction to that description. The songs are great, catchy and hysterical on their own, but the videos take it to another level, parodying everything from 80s infomercials to Enya to Beyonce’s Lemonade. There is no 30 minutes of TV I rewatched more in 2019.
John Mulaney and the Sack Lunch Bunch (Netflix) – Debuting on Christmas Eve, this children’s television homage/parody snuck in just under the wire. The words of the day could be fear and mortality, as the group of kids Mulaney interacts with reveal their personal phobias and several skits revolve around existential angst. By the end of the first musical number I was sold, by the time David Byrne showed up I was committed, and by “Mr. Music’s” madcap finale I wished it could last forever.

heck yea !!
the office: youve probably watched this, but just in case.
parks & recreation: ^ (i actually havent started this yet, but it’s a classic)friends: ^
brooklyn 99: intensely funny and heartwarming show about cops in brooklyn. super progressive, very diverse and like, the funniest show of all time. it’s my absolute favorite show ever ever ever. every character is amazing and i would die for any one of them tbh.
community: a cult classic. it’s literally amazing and basically one of the funniest shows ever. i stopped during season five because it went downhill tbh, but the first three seasons especially are golden.
angie tribeca: basically if brooklyn 99 met community. it’s about cops as well, but the humor is really dark and weird and i love it.
fresh off the boat: super hilarious and heartwarming show about being an asian-american immigrant family.
one day at a time: this is about a cuban family with three generations living under one roof. each episode tackles an issue (from mental health to immigration to sexism in the workplace) in a way thats informative and touching. if youre like me, youll get attached to all the characters and probably cry once an episode.
superstore: it’s about the employees at a… superstore… and their adventures, to put it nicely. youll hate all the characters but if anyone insults them you would probably kill that person. it’s so funny and cringey!
the good place: this is about the afterlife but if i describe it too much, i will spoil it by accident. it’s one of the funniest shows ive ever watched, though.
unbreakable kimmy schmidt: adorable and cringey show about a girl who is locked in a bunker for fifteen years.
little mosque on the prairie: iconic canadian show about a small community of muslims in a small, very caucasian town in the middle of nowhere.
the it crowd: ICONIC british show with the weirdest humor but it’s so perfect and funny and amazing. it’s the source of a lot of iconic gifs and scenes.

Landmark Diageo Distillery, China
Known for creating transcendent designs around the world, OLI Architecture’s newest project for Diageo China, Ltd. broke ground recently and applies the studio’s characteristic attention to form, light, and site resonance to a new distillery and visitors’ center nestled in the valley of China’s snowcapped Cangshan mountains.
The whisky distillation process, coupled with OLI Architecture’s signature response to surrounding landscape, inspired the design concept “Of Nature, to Nature,” highlighting the circular relationship of the architecture to its context. The collection of buildings and outdoor spaces make extensive use of local stone and are harmoniously embedded into the terrain to follow the natural elevations of the site. The complex then dramatically opens on the southern exposed face to reveal the landscape, mountains, and vast sky.
The distillery, and its extensive water features stepping towards the east, are supplied by the locally sourced pristine spring water, purified, and reused after the crafting of the high-quality single malt whiskey. Completing the cycle, the lushly landscaped east end, with natural retention pools of post-production purified water, supports native endangered species promoting the biodiversity of Yunnan.
Phase one of the project incorporates a 2,500sqm Visitors’ Center with a technologically advanced 12,500sqm distillery. The visitors’ center, arrival, and reception areas welcome guests in advance of their tour through the production facility, designed to be an immersive, multi-sensory experience. The tour culminates with a whiskey tasting in the Barrel Tower, an iconic beacon in the landscape, influenced by the local Dali architecture. Visitors can also enjoy additional hospitality spaces including a high-end tasting lounge of locally sourced ingredients, retail store, café, and a multi-function and VIP space for events and distinguished guests. The distillery is organized into zones for the complete whiskey production process – grist, milling, mashing, fermentation, distilling, coopering, filling, cask storage, and maturation – with offices for the engineering team and support staff. The site and program will be further developed in future phases.
Founding Partner Hiroshi Okamoto says, “It is an honor to partner with Diageo to bring this first-of-its-kind distillery and visitors’ center to one of the most bio-diverse regions not only in China but the world. Together, we have created a new destination that not only celebrates the artistry of whiskey production and pays homage to the local Dali context and deep Scottish whiskey traditions, but the natural elements that make it possible and create an environment to best enjoy it.”

An A.P. Bio Season 4 Episode Guide with Showrunner Mike O’Brien
https://ift.tt/38xQFt4
Fittingly for a show about high school, A.P. Bio’s writers are often tasked with the least enjoyable aspect of education: homework.
“One of the ways we try to find new areas in stories is just by writing assignments and homework,” A.P. Bio showrunner Mike O’Brien tells Den of Geek. “We’ll all go home and write. I often call them sketches or scenes – just some little thing.”
O’Brien’s homework assignments have apparently paid off as they’ve allowed the comedy to reach four seasons, the first two of which aired on NBC and the following two on streaming service Peacock.
A.P. Bio is set in the fictional Whitlock High School in Toledo, Ohio and follows disgraced Harvard philosophy professor Jack Griffin (Glenn Howerton) as he returns home to teach some eager nerds A.P. Biology. Unfortunately for the nerds, Jack has no intention of teaching them A.P. Biology and instead forces his students to join him on missions to address his many petty slights and grievances. Fortunately for the nerds, some lessons are learned despite Jack’s most sincere efforts not to instill any.
With all eight episodes of A.P. Bio season 4 available to stream on Peacock now, we caught up with O’Brien to discuss the journey so far. And since we’re thorough, we decided to ask about each of season 4’s eight episodes.
Read along with our A.P. Bio season 4 syllabus below.
Season 4 Episode 1 “Tornado!”
“Tornado” begins with a set up that should be familiar to many current and former Midwestern students: a tornado drill. The concept of avoiding the mighty power of a tornado by gathering in a hallway and hoping it doesn’t notice you is ripe for comedic possibilities. A.P. Bio, however, decides to take things in a bit of a different direction. This premiere is a vessel for the students of Whitlock High to share slash fiction stories about their teachers with one another.
“One of the writers in the room, Jess Lacher, wrote the cold open of ‘Tornado’ almost word for word,” O’Brien says. “That stayed pretty much as is. We were like, ‘Maybe this is a whole episode.’”
Naturally the excursion into one of fandom’s most treacherous pastimes required some preliminary investigations.
“We did a decent amount of research (into slash fiction). I tried to get into the origins a little bit of it, which seemed to be maybe Spock and Kirk.”
As of press time, there is no available slash fiction about A.P. Bio characters that I’m aware of…yet.
Season 4 Episode 2 “Sweatpants”
The simplest of actions lead to the grandest of consequences on A.P. Bio. In this episode, that action is a dress code policy to curb bullying. The consequence is the formation of a cult, naturally.

A.P. Bio Season 3 Preview: School’s Back In Session
By Alec Bojalad
“We were trying to use some of the tropes of real cults,” O’Brien says. “I feel like I’d just seen Midsommar, and I’ve been a fan for a long time of The Source Family. There’s so many good fiction and nonfiction cult movies and things to talk about, that writers are always talking about and imitating.”
What makes A.P. Bio’s cult particularly interesting is that it centers on sad sack student Victor (Jacob Houston).
“More than anything, we wanted to put it through Victor’s filter. So things he likes and hates are all given Jonestown-level of intensity.”
And that’s how you get delightfully strange scenes of a whole classroom yelling “Divorce! Divorce!” at things they don’t like.
Season 4 Episode 3 “An Oath to Rusty”
Following his break-up with the lovely Lynette (Elizabeth Alderfer), Jack needs some friends. Unfortunately, the only way he knows how to go about getting them is by asking them to play the world’s hardest board game
“I found Twilight Imperium by Googling ‘hardest games to learn.’ It’s always in the top five. It’s a lot,” O’Brien says. “Talk about going down deep rabbit holes. I spent more time learning tutorials on YouTube for that game than anything else.”
While Jack’s relationship struggles, this episode spends plenty of time with a trio of characters who are thick as thieves. Stef Duncan (Lyric Lewis) and Mary Wagner (Mary Sohn) find themselves frustrated with their friend Michelle Jones’s (Jean Villepique) refusal to tell them what case she worked on during jury duty. According to O’Brien, this is another concept that came directly from the writing staff’s “homework assignments.”
“That was a homework assignment from David Neher, who plays Geology Dave on the show. He just randomly brought in as his homework one time a thing where Stef and Mary are doing police sketches of a fully misunderstood thing from Michelle, who isn’t saying anything about her boring trial she was a jury member for.”
Season 4 Episode 4 “Tons of Rue”
Though the delightful Joe Manganiello notably pops up later on, cult movie star Bruce Campbell is A.P. Bio season 4’s biggest get. The beloved Evil Dead actor portrays Jack’s scumbag father who is trying to turn over a new leaf.
“That was so cool,” O’Brien says of bringing Campbell aboard. “He’s not as well known as Tom Cruise, but his fans are all fever pitch fans. Certain crew members and a handful of the writers were going nuts. I think Glenn was a big fan and really excited.”
Unfortunately for Howerton’s Jack, his father’s instincts to flee when things get too real win out again in the end. Though Campbell’s time on the show was brief, he left a big impact behind the scenes, according to O’Brien.
“He’s just so nice. I guess you’d hope it’s either that, or he’s like a weird psychopath that requires tiny orange juices to keep coming to work. But he’s gregarious and funny and nice and does a great job with the script. I loved having him around. I was a big Evil Dead fan in college, so it was the best.”
Season 4 Episode 5 “The Perfect Date From Hell”
So I’ll be frank: we ran out of time to discuss “The Perfect Date From Hell” with Mike O’Brien. And that’s a shame as there’s quite a bit going on here! From the introduction of Jack’s new love interest Shayla (Hayley Marie Norman) to Principal Durbin (Patton Oswalt) going all Undercover Boss, there was certainly plenty to unpack. Oh well, next time we’ll get to hear all about Durbs’ disturbing prosthetics.
Onto the next one!
Season 4 Episode 6 “Love, for Lack of a Better Term”
This is Victor’s second big showcase episode of the season, after serving as a cult leader in “Sweatpants.” This time around things are a lot less sinister. This half-hour serves as a parody of ‘90s teen romance movies (Third Eye Blind soundtrack and all) in which a lovable schlub goes for the popular girl and can’t realize his true love was in front of him the whole time.
“It ended up being a big Victor season. He kind of takes over this episode and has a couple of other really great moments,” O’Brien says.
Despite Victor’s clear status as MVP, O’Brien says it’s important for each student character to get their time in the sun.
“I would say I hope that all of (the students) shine at different moments, because they’re all so talented. It’s on the writing team to make sure we aren’t letting any of them slip through the cracks, even for one episode.”
Season 4 Episode 7 “Malachi”
It’s no secret that comedy titan Paula Pell is a big part of A.P. Bio’s success as school secretary Helen Henry Demarcus. Through three seasons, the show has treated her as a Paul Bunyan-esque character, capable of astonishing feats and fit to bursting with a positively insane backstory. While Helen has quite the internal history on A.P. Bio, the show has not yet fully reckoned with her as a sexual being until this season. And this is the episode that delves furthest into Helen’s horny heart to amazing success.
“She’s in and out of relationships that aren’t great all the time,” O’Brien says. “We cast Paula’s wife who is a very funny comedy writer and performer. That not only was really fun and exciting, because we know Janine (Brito), but in the midst of a very tense February and March COVID shoot it was a little bit of a relief for Paula and Janine to be able to kiss.”
The story of Paula and a waitress at a local bar’s torrid (and quick) love affair is quite madcap. But according to O’Brien, the show has considered some other off-the-wall possibilities for Helen’s love life in the past.
“We pictured she had a girlfriend who works on one of those fishing boats in Alaska, like Deadliest Catch. She’s there 363 days a year and then on one day Helen calls their “Purge dating day’, they try to have dinner, make out, and go to an amusement park and a concert, all in one day. That was probably a little too wacky.”
Season 4 Episode 8 “The Harvard Pen”
“The Harvard Pen” has a high concept befitting a season (or perhaps series?) finale. The episode flashes back all the way to Jack Griffin’s first day with the A.P. Bio class, which is somehow only “a few months earlier.” Jack gives one golden rule to the assembled students: never touch his Harvard pen. Naturally they do, and the episode follows the pen’s months-long journey to eventual oblivion.
Ultimately though, the real standout in this installment is the web series that the A.P. Bio kids have been producing with Heather (Allisyn Snyder) starring. Janet Fist is a ‘70s style cop drama in which the titular character is a receptionist who has an incredible ability to solve crimes…and to shoot everyone she sees full of lead.
“I used to write a lot of short stories about a ‘70s renegade cop that I would read when I was in improv in Chicago,” O’Brien says. “I thought ‘what if that was through the eyes of this kind of quirky high school girl? Maybe she’s not even allowed to be a cop in the ’70s.’ It becomes this kind of feminist statement that Heather wants to make. It was just really fun to write after that.”
If a fifth season of A.P. Bio isn’t in Peacock’s plans, we’re gonna need to go all-out on a Janet Fist spinoff fan campaign.
cnx.cmd.push(function() { cnx({ playerId: "106e33c0-3911-473c-b599-b1426db57530", }).render("0270c398a82f44f49c23c16122516796"); });
A.P. Bio season 4 is available to stream on Peacock now.

New interview with Glenn
It’s with Playboy. For those who don’t want to visit the actual website, it’s under the cut.
There are definite similarities between Jack and Dennis. Were you deliberately looking for a role that felt on-brand?
If I’m being totally honest, what I was looking for outside of Sunny was stuff that was completely off-brand. I like to stretch myself as an actor—I want to do more dramatic material. But this script hit my desk, and it felt like my sensibility. Then, the whole Seth and Lorne of it all, I was like, “I can’t say no to this.” Even though there were some similatities to the two characters, and I’m potentially in danger of typecasting myself by saying yes to it, I just couldn’t say no. It’s successful material, as far as I’m concerned. Because I don’t have to work, right? I want to—I like working. But this one surprised me. It’s not what I thought I’d do.
You’re not an executive producer on A.P. Bio. Is that liberating, in a way?
Both liberating and tough. I’m used to being in charge, so if things aren’t going the way I want them to go, I can’t change it. That being said, I am a producer on the show, but I’m not an executive producer. Mike O'Brien is very much the showrunner, but he has a tremendous amount of respect for my background and my comedy brain. So I gave him lots of notes on scripts, I gave him lots of notes on cuts. What I liked about him was, if he thought what I was telling him was better than what was already there, he would change it. He had no ego about it. But if he disagreed with me, he also stood his ground.
How hands-on are Lorne Michaels and Seth Meyers?
Most of Lorne’s work is pretty much behind-the-scenes. Lorne’s main role is certainly in the beginning, helping the showrunner and the writer to navigate the first script and the world and the characters. And then I think he’s there to champion the show with the studio and the network. Seth is somebody that Mike relied on heavily to get his take on scripts. Seth would pitch jokes—I know he was there when Mike needed him.
Now that we’re a bit removed from the previous season of Sunny, is it a relief to not be in the day-to-day of it, or do you start to miss it?
Both. It’s a relief to not be in the day-to-day. We started writing season 12 this time two years ago—I haven’t done anything Sunny-related in a year and a half, and it has been really nice. There was always that ticking clock: “Got to go back to Sunny.” But yes, after a year, I definitely find myself missing it. Regardless of other things that I want to do, there’s no denying the show just resonates with people.
And the fact that it really resonates with people, and it still really resonates with me and Charlie [Day] and Rob [McElhenney] and Kaitlin [Olson] and Danny [DeVito], you really start to realize that those things coming together don’t happen very often where people behind something get to make exactly what they want to make, and people like it and consume it, and I can make a living doing it. That’s extraordinarly rare. It’s just tough to give that up—and I’m not giving it up. Whether I come back to the show as an actor or not is a purely creative decision because I have the time to do it—we just have to decide [what to do].
When you make a decision to branch out from Always Sunny with A.P. Bio, is there a sense that you are trying a shape a legacy that includes a wider breadth of work? Or do you just get ready for new challenges after 12 seasons as one character?
I struggle sometimes because my goals—I mean, I started as a classically trained, theatre actor. All I ever wanted to be was a really, really good actor. For whatever reason, I ended up in television, and then we ended up making Sunny, and all of a sudden I became a writer and a producer, and it made me realize I always wanted to have more control over the product itself. But somewhere deep down inside …
I’m very proud of the work I’ve done on Sunny—I think we’ve created something wholly original there. But there’s also a part of me that just wants to be an actor—a really good actor. And I want to surprise people. I do want to show people my range as an actor. And I don’t know if I’ll have that chance or not, but I’m going to try. It’s hard when you’ve been on a show for 12 years for people to see you as anything other than that guy. That’s OK—I understand that. That’s my cross to bear, and it’s not a bad one. I just have to do the work.
I didn’t get in this business to become famous. I could give a fuck about being famous. I could give a fuck about celebrity. Money’s always great because it’s a tool. But I want to be respected, I want to do good work. All the other stuff is fucking bullshit. It comes with the territory, though. I’m OK with it, I get it. I understand it, and I understand its purpose. But I would love for people to look at my body of work and go, “That guy did good work. He did good work.”
In a perfect world for you, do we see Dennis in season 13?
[Long pause] Uh, that’s a tough question to answer. I just can’t answer that. I doubt you will have seen the last of Dennis, whether it’s in season 13 or 14. I’m not sure because we [haven’t started the writers room]. That’s a conversation that we’ve already started having, me and Rob and Charlie. For me, the creative—the story and what we want to do with these characters moving forward—takes precedence over what I personally want. We want to stretch ourselves creatively—we want to continue to stretch our characters creatively, and that may mean trying to figure out how to write a season where he’s not there, and watching the characters deal with that, or half a season where he’s not there. We just haven’t decided yet. I’m trying very hard to let the creative dictate what happens.
