WIP game! ->soulmates (nix is stupid)

as it says on the tin, this is a soulmate au, one of the soulmates being marked variety. Iiiii started this one a while back and haven't really looked at it for a while, so I can't quite remember what my full intentions were for the worldbuilding, but I believe the setup was the soulmate marks share shape and colour but can be positioned differently on each person. I think I also intended this to be a world where same-sex soulmates were somewhat rare or rarely acknowledged because that kind of period-typical homophobia stuff usually something I go for in my fic. I like what I have so far but need to work on what the actual plot will be before I continue with it

Kathy isn't Lew's soulmate. He knows she isn't: they don't share any marks. But she's rich the way he is and fun the way he wants to be, and it makes his mother happy, so he marries her anyway.  He's got a patch of red that almost looks like a handprint blushing the side of his hipbone and she has a coiling purpleish line that trails from low between her breasts and down almost to her navel. They compare them the first time they end up in bed together, lazing naked and sweaty and drunk, and they laugh at the idea that they really mean anything at all. Of course it's a mistake. Lew just didn't think it would come back to bite him quite as quickly as it does. He hadn’t really thought about it coming back to bite him at all. That’s a bad habit, one in a long line of bad habits. Impulsivity.  Lew makes another mistake and there’s a baby on the way. It’s not unusual for people not to find their soulmates. Perfectly adequate-if-not-happy marriages can happen between couples who don’t share marks. It happens every day. Finding your soulmate is unlikely at the best of times, no matter what flowery poets might scribble about it. Joining the Army isn’t another mistake. It’s running away from his others. Another bad habit: lack of responsibility. His father has a lot to say about that, naturally. Kathy prefers him absent, though. She prefers the Nixon name without the Nixon present for more than a few hours a week. Lew finds he prefers a wife who doesn’t want him around. It happens when they’re almost done with Officer Candidate School. He’s not looking for it, not in the habit of checking for something so unlikely, but in the morning sun, Lew spots a very familiar-looking shade of red peeking out from under the edge of one Richard Winters’ PT shorts and he feels his stomach sink. A cold strange rush goes through him.
