â a birthday to remember
- gojo satoru x reader
what is the so-called grand surprise does your husband prepare for your birthday?
genre: 18+ suggestive contentâminors do not interact!âmassive fluff, comfort, pregnant!reader, (cough) pregnant sex
note: hi peeps it's been ages since i last wrote gojo :') and love entries on that matter *sobs* but here it is... my birthday has passed too but here's to any of you whose birthday is near!
a part of gojo's love entries
general masterlist
âSenseiâ happy birthday!â
This year, your birthday happened to fall on a workday.
If it were up to you, you would have taken the day off. However, Satoru had been assigned to Osaka and wouldnât be returning until weekend, so taking leave and staying at home would most likely make you feel lonely.
Not only that, with you entering the fifth month of pregnancy, you figured it was better to stay active. And by the end of the dayâyou didnât regret coming in at all. The students were all so sweet, they even chimed in to get you a pretty maternity dress to wear. You couldnât wait to tell Satoru about them tonight.
You skipped happily toward the parking lot, but right when you turned the corner, suddenlyâ
âWifeeeey!â
âOh my god!â
You let out a loud gasp and took a step back, taking in the view. A sea of colorful balloons, with a man in suit standing right in the middle of itâ
Your husband. In flesh. You blinked once, twiceâ thrice.
âSatoru...?â
He poked his head out of the string of balloons, a beaming, million-dollar grin lit up his face at the sight of your shocked expression. âWifeeey! Happy birthdaaaaay!â
Before you could even process his sudden appearance, he had you in a chokehold, engulfing you in a bear hug and nuzzling his face against yours with childlike enthusiasm, the faint scent of his cologne filling your senses.
âWhat are you doing here?!â you half-shrieked, the surprise spilling from your voice.
He pulled back, frowning dramatically. âEhhh? You donât want me to be back?â
âYesââ
His eyes widened as if youâd just committed the gravest betrayal. âYou big meanie!â
âNo,â you quickly retracted, trying to hold back your own smile at how comically dejected he was. âI mean⌠arenât you supposed to be back on Sunday?â
âHeh heh, nope! I lied~â Satoru chirped, his grin returning in full force. âItâs my wifeyâs birthdayâhow could I not come back for you?â
In that moment, your heart fluttered. He was probably saying it for no reason, but the fact that he really did fly back from Osaka just to meet you for your birthday meant a lot to you.
His big, warm hand then gently caressed your visible baby bump, his grin widening when he got a kick. âAh, right⌠Hello to you too, baby! Did I startle you too? Sorry~â
You rolled your eyes, retorting, âHe is terrified.â
Satoru leaned in, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper directed at your belly. âDonât worry, baby. Papaâs here now, and heâs got balloons. That makes everything better, right?â
â...how long have you been standing here with these balloons?â
âHmmm, not long. About an hour, maybe?â
âYou shitheadâwhy didnât you just come inside?â
Satoruâs gasp of mock offense made you laugh despite yourself. âAnd ruin the surprise? My wifey deserves the full dramatic effect!â
Being Gojo Satoruâs wife certainly came with its fair share of patience-testing episodes, and sometimes you wanted to return him to Yaga for additional lessons of discipline.
But it was candid, over-the-top acts like this that reminded you just how lucky you were to have him.
Satoru brought you to a high-end restaurant for your birthday dinner before the two of you finally returned home.
And the moment you opened the door, you were greeted by countless balloons floating on the ceiling and the ground, the fairy lights illuminating the room in a cozy glow.
You were taken aback, mesmerized by the sight. âWhen did you even have the time to decorate the house?â
He grinned, looking far too pleased with himself. âI have many little helpersââ
âDon't tell me it's Ichiji and Nanami? Satoru, youâ!â
âI promised Nanami I wouldnât make him blow up balloons! Though I might have heard him grumble something about being above thisâŚâ
"You're unbelievable..." You let out a resigned sigh, yet still smiling as you stepped further into the living room, now bathed in the soft, golden glow.
Satoru observed you with a quiet smile. His pretty wife, and the small life within you. He adored you the most out of everyone else in this twisted world.
Click! Click!
"Huh?" You turned to him when you heard the distinct sound of a camera shutter.
Satoru was holding his phone, an amused glint in his eyes. âJust capturing the moment, you know. You, the lights, and baby. It's perfect.â
You giggled. âYou really canât help yourself, can you?â
He shrugged, that signature grin returning. âWhat can I say? Youâre beautiful.â
Later, you'd find out that one of the photos would be his lock screen from now on. It would be the first thing he saw every time he unlocked his phone.
Satoru brought out the box he had prepared, handing it to you with a sly grin. âLook, sweets, before we go to bed, I have one more gift for youâand you have to wear it now.â
You arched an eyebrow, curiosity piqued, as you took the box from his hands. The moment you opened it and pulled out the contents, you froze.
ââ?! Satoru!â
A scarlet lingerie set. The bra features intricate lace trim along the edges, and the matching panties are equally bold, with a sheer lace overlay. Your cheeks flushed as you glanced at Satoru, who was watching you with an winning grin, clearly pleased with his choice.
âWhat?â he challenged. âThey'll suit you, c'mon.â
âYou're absolutely shameless.â
âBut you love me anyway~â
You let out a defeated sigh, glancing up at him, already realizing there was no way out of this now.
âYouâre lucky Iâve hit my head somewhere and married you.â
. . .
He was right. It fit you perfectly.
The moment you got out of the bathroom, Satoru could feel himself getting hard already. You looked like a vision, the deep red seemed to highlight your every curve, turning you into an effortless seductress.
And not only that, you were adorable tooâ fiddling with your fingers and touching your rounded belly, barely hiding how self-conscious you were.
"Don't just stare at me..." you mumbled, glaring at him.
He reached out, gently brushing his fingers against your cheek, his touch tender despite the fire in his eyes. âYouâre making it hard to look away, you know.â
His hands then trailed down, skimming the sides of your body, each touch lingering just long enough to make your breath hitch. It was almost as if he was unraveling you, piece by piece, and you werenât sure whether to pull away or pull him closer.
And wait... was it just you or were the space between your legs indeed getting hotter and wetter?
As if reading your mind, suddenly two of his fingers touched your barely clad pussy, and you gasped. That's rightâ there is indeed a hole in this freaking lingerie!
"Are... we...?" you swallowed, your gaze meeting his.
"Can I?" he asked back, voice husky. His crystal clear eyes burning with lust as he assessed youâ from your eyes, lips, and then the inviting sight of your cleavage.
Did you want this?
Of course you were. Your birthday was still far from over, and you missed him too.
In response, you pushed his already hovering fingers inside you, making you hold your breath. From that point on, Satoru knew what you wanted.
Without another word, he rubbed soft circles around your clit, and you let out an unabashed moan at the contact, clinging to his shoulders for support. "Ahh..."
He teased you for a while, before slowly entering his fingers into your throbbing folds, and you were close to collapsing if it weren't for his secure hold over you.
"You're so, so damn naughty..." he whispered lowly in your ear. It was taking everything he had not to lose it right then and there. He wanted you to be as comfortable as possible, but the sight of your writhing face and that baby bump was damn distracting and ignited the beast inside him.
He made you pregnant already, but there was just this primal desireâ wanting to mark you more...
His fingers slowly pumped in and out of you, dragging them deep but just not deep enoughâ
"Please..." you scratched his back unwittingly, frustrated at his shirt that got in the way. "I-I... want... you..."
How sweet. Satoru relished in your titillating breaths and chuckled, vigorously continuing his dirty ministrations.
"Say it louder," he growled in your ears. "Can't hear you."
The bastard. You yanked his hair and made him catch your teary gaze. "I... want you..."
Sinful desire flared to life at your words. "Your wish is my command, missus."
Satoru suddenly pulled out his fingersâignoring the whine you accidentally let out for being empty all of a suddenâand admired the sheen, sticky whiteness on them.
"I barely did anything and you're this wet already," he snorted, tasting it. "They're right about the pregnancy hormones."
He placed his hand on your waist, pressing a kiss on the firm skin of your belly, before undoing his belt and trousers and pulling out his hardened member.
The sight made you actually gulp, especially when he pumped it. He pulled you to his lap and guided his pride to your sopping entrance. The moment he inserted himself, he let out a groan of relief, while you arched your back and hissed, "Ngh!"
Satoru captured your lips, his hand pressing against your aching spine. He pulled you closer, urging you to take him completely.
"Ahhâ ugh... mrgh!" you sighed against his neck as soon as you did, trying to even your breath. This was something you had done so many times before, but why was this time felt like an awakening of some sorts?
"Most beautiful," he breathed in your ear wickedly. "Don't worry, leave everything to me."
He rocked his hips against yours, one hand on your back and the other gripping your thigh. With each salacious thrust, you mewled and he panted, keeping you steady all the while.
He could feel your baby bump rubbing against as his toned abs, going along with the rhythm. Satoru grinned proudly, noticing how much it had grown over the past few months. The baby must be healthy in there, huh?
The relief somehow spurred him into pick up his pace, thrusting you more deeply than before. You almost squealed.
"You know what?" he grunted, mind hazed. He didn't really realize what he was saying to you, to be honest. "You're the prettiest when you're like thisâ round and full, with my kid."
You only caught the lewdness in his words, but you weren't able to ponder about it as he suddenly buried his face into your supple breasts.
"Look at them, getting bigger tooâ these days..." He sucked on the sensitive skin and you gasped in pleasure, crying out afterwards when he fondled them with both hands.
Your senses were overly heightened and you knew you wouldn't last long. Satoru too knew he was nearing his orgasm as he tore your new bra and sucked on the mound, furthering your never-ending moans, causing your eyes to roll back as the blinding pleasure overtook youâ pushing you to cum right then and there.
In the next second, he pushed you into him impossibly deeper, and his hot release gushed inside your womb. You writhed at the sudden fullness, before getting limp and collapsed into him, not even realizing that you had squirted all over his lap and dress shirt.
Your husband glanced at you, in disbelief himself at the messy scene, but utterly satisfied as his bright eyes twinkled. "Heh..."
You were awoken at three in the morning, and the first thing you noticed was that you were in Satoru's warm embrace.
His arms were wrapped around you securely, holding you close as if he were protecting you even in his sleep. You must have passed out afterwards, as all you recalled was the numbing exhaustion.
Yet you knew for certain that Satoru had cleaned you up, dressed you in your pajamas, and even placed a heat pad on your hips to soothe you.
(He remembered the one time you woke up with cramps right after a raunchy night before)
Your husband was a cheeky shit, but for you, he was willing to go extra miles. It was an overlooked fact sometimes due to how unserious he was, but each time he did and you were reminded of it, your heart always soared.
Looking up, you found his peaceful sleeping face, and not for the first time, you couldnât help but marvel at how truly handsome he was. A soft smile tugged at your lips as you gently caressed his face.
"Hmm...?" he frowned adorably, and you almost giggled. But when he cracked his eyes open, you almost regretted itâoh yes, he is a light sleeper.
"Sweets...? Can't sleep...?" He turned to you, voice thick with sleepiness. "Anything wrong?"
"No, I'm just watching you." You smiled, poking his cheek. "Go back to sleep."
"Really? Nothing's amiss?" His hand gently slid to your belly, giving it a reassuring rub. "You have to tell me if anythingâs not right..."
"Hush, I'm fine."
After making sure you were indeed fine, Satoru tightened his arms over you and pressed his eyes shut. You wrapped your arms around his back in response, feeling his steady warmth. Right in this moment, you were overwhelmed with this gentle, soft feelingâ love, the kind he gave you so freely and candidly.
Your birthday had passed, but if there was one wish only he could fulfill, surely you could still ask him, right?
"Satoru..." you muttered, feeling the cool breeze of the air conditioner lulling you back to sleep. "Will you stay with me... forever?"
A smile curled on his lips at your question, his eyes still closed. "Silly girl, it's your bedtime, so why ask that?"
You thought he wouldn't answer it as he didn't say anything more. But right before you drift into deep sleep, he pressed a sweet kiss to the crown of your head, giving you his promiseâ one that felt truer than anything else he had said to you before.
"I will... so you must stay with me too, got it?"

YOU CAN COUNT ON ME
summary; you have evan pretend to be your boyfriend because of a creep at the bar. (established friendship with a hint of mutual pining)
pairings; evan buckley x fem!reader
genre; fake dating, fluff!!
warnings: mentions of harassment and a man who canât take no for an answer, attempted violence & sexism. allusions to sex.
âhey baby.â you smile, sliding into the seat next to buck, kissing his cheek softly.
your smile was wide and your eyes shining with love and adoration, evan wondered if heâd been sucked into a parallel universe where his dream came true.
buck frowns and turns to look at you. âgo with it, please.â you whisper, evan still doesnât get the hint but he sees the desperation in your eyes, and shrugs, leaning down and pecks your lips.
âhi honey.â
his tone was dull, and full of confusion, instead of a loving boyfriend, the role he was meant to be playing right now, eyes searching yours, for an answer.
you couldnât blame him, for his bad acting you hadnât gave him time to listen before youâd planted one on him.
the guy who had been following you, ever filled with confidence slides in between you and evan, smirking at you. âthis your boyfriend then sweetheart?â
you blink gulping, evan finally understands and stands up, manoeuvring around the guy throwing an arm over your shoulder, smirking in a way that wouldâve made your knees weak if it was in any other context.
âyes i am.â he says confidently. âin fact, soon to be husband.â he adds. âso, do we have a problem here?â
the guy, probably drunk out of his mind scoffs in disbelief. âwhatâs a girl like you with a guy like this.â he crossed his arms over his chest in an aggressive way.
âthat guy, is a firefighter.â you glare. âand heâs a good one at that, and so am i, and youâre a drunk.â you say. âare you suggesting that youâd be the better option.â
the man, nods, less confident now, clearly he was growing agitated. âi could please you in ways he never could.â the drunk man smirked growing closer, you could smell the alcohol on him and you cringed.
you laughed bitterly and evan squeezed your arm in support. âi can assure you thatâs just completely not true.â you smirk, gently pushing him away.
âthereâs a reason they call him firehose, and it isnât because heâs a firefighter.â
evan blushed furiously, to hear his best-friend who heâd been pining after say something like that, even if it was to bruise another manâs ego, it made his heart rate spike.
the man gritted his teeth and lifted his hand, as if he was about to hit you, evan, had quick reflexes and a good eye, and grabbed his hand preventing it from hurting you.
âif you touch, come near, or even think about my girlfriend, iâll promise i will hurt you.â evan grits out, making intense eye contact with the man, the man after a while, gulps and nods, he hangs his head as he walks away.
once heâs gone you sigh and lean your head on bucks bicep in relief, looking up at buck thankfully.
âyouâre lifesaver buck, really.â you chuckle. âif that was too much i understand, iâm sorry.â
ânah donât worry.â evan puffs out his chest. âit is like you said, iâm a lifesaver.â he smirks, but suddenly is eyes soften.
âbut iâm also your bestfriend, and i need you to know you can always count on me.â
âi know.â you smile softly. âiâve always known.â

crush (part 2) // abby anderson
*シăďžď˝Ľ* summary: i owe you a black eye and two kisses. tell me when you wanna come and get 'em. abby finally confronts her feelings in the spur of the moment, then gets scared and runs away. it all works out in the end, though.
*シăďžď˝Ľ* pairing: canon!abby x reader
*シăďžď˝Ľ* content: nsfw. nothing too crazy just some yearny sesbian lex using hands. light injury description and abby being a horrible communicator
*シăďžď˝Ľ* length: 2.9k
this is part two of this series! find part one here
i hope you enjoy the second part! i'm so down to write more of this so lmk if anyone wants it
abby keeps it all to herself. she enjoys having you as a friend, and reasons that itâs better not to mess it all up. just because you like her whole entire gender doesnât mean you like her. plus, sheâs not even sure about what sheâs feeling. figures that if she actually wasnât straight, sheâd surely have already known by now. but then again, she didnât know you back then. didnât feel what she feels around you.
then, one night, youâve been around at hers, drinking and watching a movie with manny. sheâd accidentally overindulged, possibly (definitely) out of nerves. youâd had to drag the chair and beanbag over in front of the TV, you and abby both piling onto the beanbag, chair not big enough to hold the two of you.
there was still barely enough room, and you were pressed up against her. at first, you were awkwardly perched, body rigid; but then, as the film went on and you had a little more to drink, you found yourself sinking into the seat, further into her.
by the end of it, your head is comfortably on her shoulder, laughing and chatting freely â she can smell your hair, feel the heat of your body against her, and she truly thinks she might combust.
once itâs gotten late, you say youâd better be heading back to your own place. abby tipsily insists on walking you back, even though itâs really not necessary. like, at all.
you jovially chat and giggle on the way back through the stadium, and all you can remember thinking is how glad you are that you met her. how rare it is for you to know someone who you feel so connected to, who everything feels so easy with almost instantaneously.
when you get to your door, she lingers around, keeping the conversation going even after you say goodnight â like she wants something from you, wants to say something but canât. thereâs a moment where it drops quiet, and sheâs just looking at you. studying your face, maintaining eye contact for probably longer than she ever has. thatâs when you realize sheâs automatically drifted closer.
and then, liquid courage coursing through her veins and affirmed by you leaning on her earlier, she kisses you.
itâs quick, and you donât return it. not because you donât want to, but out of pure shock â never in a million years would you have seen it coming. youâd fully shelved your crush on her, under the impression it was never going to happen.
before you have a real chance to react, she pulls back, cheeks tinged red.
you speak at the same time: her blurting out, "sorry, fuck"; you simply shaking your head a little, stuttering, âa-abby, iâŚâ
a beat passes, you slightly open-mouthed, abbyâs hands anxiously fiddling with themselves at her sides. immediately, sheâs sober. âfuck, i-iâm sorry. that was stupid.â
âno, abby, itâs justââ before you can finish your sentence, she mutters something inaudible and turns, beginning to stride off down the hall, feeling like a fucking idiot. of course you didnât like her, and sheâd just drunkenly ruined it all for nothing.
your call of her name, followed by a, âwait!â falls on deaf ears, and she turns the corner, gone. youâre left stunned, frozen outside your door, trying to process what just happened.
you want to go after her, have her allow you to explain yourself, but decide against it. you donât know if she really meant it, you donât know what her reasons were for running off; you donât know what the fuck to do. so, despite every ounce of yourself begging you not to, you simply go inside and try your best to sleep. you canât, though, mind whirring for hours on end until you finally pass out.
the next morning, you pray you run into her. usually, you always saw her at some point, but it was like she was avoiding everywhere you might be.
you see manny in the canteen later in the day, catching up to him and asking him where she is; he just shrugs, saying that sheâd picked up an extra assignment and headed out that morning. might not be back for a day or two.
you canât help but let out an exasperated sigh, crossing your arms. you knew it was on purpose. all over a kiss. âare you fucking kidding me?â
he gives you a funny look. âyou two have a fight or something? she was⌠quiet when she came back.â
rolling your eyes, you shake your head after a moment. basically the opposite. âno⌠no, we didnât.â
âright.â he quirks an eyebrow slightly, taking a breath. âyou want me to talk to her when i see her?â
you shake your head vehemently, furrowing your brow. ânah, nah, donât. just⌠let me know when she gets back, please?â
he nods once, tapping the side of your arm. âyou got it.â
you utter out a thanks, and with that youâre off.
you donât want to be mad at her, but you are. you donât know why sheâs running away from you, quite literally putting her life on the line just so she doesnât have to face you. what makes it so much worse is she didnât even give you a chance. if sheâd have just heard you out instead of storming off, there wouldnât even be an issue in the first place.
the next morning arrives, and abbyâs still not back. the whole day, you fight the urge to walk over to her apartment and knock on the door every five minutes. you know manny said a day or two, but you canât help but anxiously await her return the moment itâs plausible.
you try to keep yourself busy with work, but all your mind does is wander back to her. thinking about what sheâs doing, if sheâs okay, what youâre going to say to her when she gets back. you replay the kiss over and over in your head, scrutinizing every millisecond of it. what if the reason she freaked out was that she only did it because she was drunk, immediately realized she regretted it, and thatâs why sheâs avoiding you?
her absence just gives you too much time to worry, conjure up every worst case scenario. by the end of it, youâre essentially convinced she doesnât like you, that it was a mistake, and now your friendship will never be the same.
finally, around noon the day after, manny collars you in the hallway and lets you know abbyâs back. you let out a half relieved, half nervous sigh, nodding and thanking him. you canât go talk to her right away â youâre too swamped with work, on your way back from the shortest lunch break known to man, but you know the second youâve called it a day, youâre finding her.
itâs not until almost eight that you finally get to a place where you can break off, leaning back in your chair and running your hands over your face. you pack a few items away hurriedly, heart beating in your chest as you make your way over to abbyâs.
itâs not her who answers the door, though â itâs manny. you blow air out of your nose at the fact youâre seeing more of him than her at this point.
âwhere is she?â you question gently, as if he doesnât already know what you want.
the corners of his mouth quirk. âguess.â
âlibrary?â
he clicks his tongue in affirmation, and you roll your eyes fondly before telling him youâll see him later, turning to make your way down there.
standing outside the door, you realize how nervous you are. youâve wanted nothing more than to see abby since it happened, but now the momentâs here you canât help but feel hesitant about all the ways the conversation could go.
after a beat of psyching yourself up, you gingerly crack the door open, spotting her on the ottoman before gently wrapping your knuckles as you peer in. âknock, knock.â
she looks up, an unreadable expression on her face.
âcan i come in?â
she pauses, sitting up properly and placing her book to the side. âuh⌠sure.â
you smile gratefully, picking your way in and softly closing the door behind you. you make your way over, taking a seat next to her with your hands folded in your lap, avoiding eye contact. âsoâŚâ
you can see her fiddling with the sleeve of her shirt in your peripheral vision. âsoâŚ?â
looking up at her, you go to say your rehearsed spiel, then the words get caught in your throat when you notice the injuries littering her face. a couple of gashes are set into her forehead and chin, purple blossoming over her cheekbone.
âwhat the hell have you done to your face?â it comes out a little more frustrated than the caring tone you intend, but you are frustrated. if sheâd have stayed and listened, she wouldnât have been avoiding you, and in turn wouldnât have gone off and gotten herself hurt. you pivot your body to face her side, knee bending to rest your left leg sideways.
âitâs not anything.â
you tut, unable to help yourself from reaching out and running your thumb tenderly over the bruising. she pulls away from your touch slightly, to which you shoot her a look. âworse than i ever get.â
âyouâre sheltered.â
she says it matter-of-fact, and you know itâs true. youâve always had it better than her, better than most, never really being required to go into the field. both your parents are still alive, a rarity nowadays, both academics. the last time you were in real danger was simply when you were being moved into the base, going from safe point A to safe point B.Â
still, it stings a little.
âyeowch,â you respond as you allow your hand to drop from her skin, only half joking. âthereâs no need to be mean, abby.â
she rolls her eyes, still keeping her sight trained firmly ahead. âiâm not beingâŚâ she trails off, shaking her head a little and looking down at her hands. she moves to lean forward, forearms resting on her knees.
a pause passes that feels like an eternity, until you finally will yourself to speak. your voice is soft, low. âwhy did you run off on me the other night?â
she gnaws at her lip, not saying anything for a moment. âcan we just forget about that? it wasâŚâ
âa mistake, i know. you were⌠youâd had a few drinks. i know you didnât mean anything by it.â you finish her sentence for her, and she sighs and shakes her head in annoyance at how wrong you have it.
she swallows thickly in defeat, urging the words to come. she might as well tell you; sheâs already basically fucked everything up. what does she have to lose?
âthatâs⌠not it.â her words come out quiet, and she looks at you for the first time since you walked in, hands wringing in her lap.
you automatically shuffle a tiny bit closer, her leg warm against yours. âthen what is it?â
âi didnât⌠it wasnât⌠because i was drunk. it was because i wanted to.â she takes a deep breath, shoulders sinking. âand then⌠you reacted all⌠i donât know. anyway⌠you donât see me like that. can we just move on?â
you look at her, mouth opening and closing a little. your brow furrows. âoh my god. are you serious?â
âwhat?â she replies, a little defensively.
âi reacted like that because i was fucking shocked. as far as i was aware, you didnât even like girls, never mind me, and then you just kissed me out of nowhere. i didnât know how to react. and then, you didnât even give me chance to say anything and just walked off, and then i donât see you for two days,â you blurt out, floodgates opened.
itâs her turn to be speechless again, looking up at you like a deer in headlights. âso⌠w-what are you saying?â
you donât even bother to answer, knowing you can show her tenfold better than you can tell. you pull her up to you, hand resting on her jaw, pressing your lips to hers with a gentle urgency. she freezes for a split second before kissing back, one hand leaning on the ottoman behind you, the other coming up to cup your cheek.
you shift further in subconsciously, right leg going over one of hers and your free arm wrapping around her neck.
âjesus christ, abby,â you mumble against her lips between adoring smooches, âi canât believe you.â
she breathes out a chuckle. âsorry.â
you have sex for the first time that night. you invite her to stay over, not even having those expectations. you just want to be with her, want to feel close to her, wake up side by side.
but then it drops late, and your lights are on low, having spent the evening conversing on your bed with the tv droning in the background. youâre both on your sides facing each other, propped up by an elbow. and you look so pretty in the dim yellow light, she canât help herself from leaning in and kissing you, dripping with want.
you end up on top of her, fingertips stroking over either side of her face, hers pressing into your hips. all you can hear is your own pulse banging in your head, the labored, rapid breaths the two of you let out into each otherâs mouths.
you donât think youâve ever wanted anything this much. you can feel yourself soaking your underwear, and nothingâs even happened.
abby swallows thickly, pulling back for a moment, knowing where this is all going. âyou know iâve neverâŚâ she trails off, implicating the last few words, voice husked with arousal.
you pause to look at her, lidded eyes dragging over her face, a slightly amused smirk tugging at the corners of your lips.
âi know,â you respond, leaning back in to mouth at the corner of hers, before kissing down to her jaw. you continue to speak against her skin, voice low. âyouâll figure it out.â
and she sure does.
you make love to each other. itâs all slow, and testing, but wanting and desperate. a lot of abby asking every two minutes if what sheâs doing feels good, you guiding her and showing her how you like it. when you first flip her on top of you, tenderly taking her hair out from its braid and running your fingers through it, leading her hand under your waistband and showing her how wet youâve gotten for her, she truly doesnât know how the fuck she was ever, ever uncertain about her feelings.
you take your shirt off, baring yourself to her, then hers, needing to feel your skin flush against one another. her hands automatically move to make quick work of the lower half of your clothing, gaining confidence. and then youâre naked, spread out underneath her, all flushed and open mouthed, hips shifting into hers desperately â and itâs just like something takes over her.
she kisses over your chest languidly, exploring, needing to taste your skin. you gently take her wrist, moving her hand back between your legs, and your head falls back when she runs a finger through your folds. itâs a little clumsy, a little anxious, but abbyâs a quick learner. she finds a rhythm, circling your clit as her mouth attaches to your nipple.
âabby, fuckâŚâ you moan shakily, one hand tightening around her wrist, keeping her where it feels good, the other gripping lightly at her hair.
âis that okay?â she asks. sheâs looking up at you reverently, desperate to impress, and the sight sends even more heat pooling in your lower belly.
you nod hungrily and your hand moves from her wrist to her waistband, voice coming out a lot more needy than you intend. âtake these off.â
she obeys you without a word, and your free hand immediately goes to touch her, spreading her apart and toying with her clit, reveling in the noises it draws.
you make each other cum like that, touching each other at the same time, all needy and yearning. youâre first, abbyâs nerves getting the best of her, you unable to help yourself. it all builds and builds until it hits you hard, breathy, high pitched moans and whines of her name tumbling out against her shoulder. hearing you, seeing you like that sends her absolutely reeling, and itâs not long until sheâs there too. you pull her face level to yours with your free hand, threading your fingers through her hair, needing to look at her as she cums.
she looks so pretty, eyes screwed shut and brows drawn, parted lips rosy as she pants her way through her orgasm, unable to help the string of mmphs and low, strangled moans that escape her.
you work her through it, slowing your movements gradually, stroking at her face as she comes down. itâs quiet for a moment, just the sounds of the forgotten movie across the room and both of you attempting to regain your breathing.
âokay?â you ask, voice barely a whisper.
she nods, eyes still closed, tongue darting out to wet her lips. then, her mouth twitches, corners forming a small smile. âyeah. fuck.â
you mirror her, a tiny smile of your own tugging at your lips. âgood.â
kissing her nose lightly, you shift your hand away from her pussy and pop your messy fingers in your mouth, cleaning her off you, relishing in her taste.
she watches through hazy eyes, committing the sight to memory.
yeah. sheâs never looking back.

. . . The streets of Monaco were unusually quiet that night, the hum of distant cars replaced by the echo of footsteps against cobblestone. The city lights cast long shadows, stretching like ghosts between the narrow alleys.
Charles walked ahead of you, hands stuffed deep in his pockets, shoulders tense. The silence between you was heavy, filled with the reminders of words you hadnât meant to say, things you both couldnât take back.
The fight had started small, like it always did. You had only asked about the upcoming race, about his late nights at the simulator, about why he was pushing so hard. It had spiraled from there. Frustration simmering just beneath the surface, boiling over into harsh words and defensive silence.
Now, you followed a few steps behind, heart heavy, each breath tight in your chest. You wanted to reach out, to bridge the gap between you, but the distance felt overwhelming. Charles had always been intense, carrying the weight of expectations like a second skin. But tonight, he seemedâŚfragile, like a wire stretched too thin.
He stopped suddenly by the marina, the dark water stretching endlessly before you. The wind carried the scent of salt, cool against your skin. He didnât turn around, didnât say anything at first. Just stood there, staring out at the horizon, hands clenched at his sides.
"You think I donât care enough?" His voice was quiet, but the tone is his voice was unmistakable.
Your eyes stung. "Charles, no. Thatâs not what I meant." You took a step closer, but the space between you felt like a chasm. "I worry. You push yourself so hard, and I-"
He turned then, eyes meeting yours, frustration and something deeper swirling in their depths. "Do you know what itâs like?" His voice cracked, raw and tense. "To carry all of this? The pressure, the expectationsâŚ? Every single day, everyone looking at me, waiting for me to either win or fail." He shook his head. "And then I come home, and it feels like Iâm failing here too."
The words hit you like a stab to the heart, and they probably were a stab to the heart. "CharlesâŚ" Your voice was barely a whisper. "I didnât mean to add to it. I just⌠I see you carrying all of this, and it scares me. I donât want you to break."
He looked away, jaw tight. "Iâm already breaking." The statement was soft, almost lost to the wind. "I wake up thinking about the next race. I go to sleep replaying every mistake I made. And I know people are waiting for me to slip, to prove that Iâm not good enough." His eyes found yours again, and there was a vulnerability there that made your heart ache."Iâm afraid too. Afraid of letting everyone down. Afraid of losing⌠you. All because of my stupid mistakes."
Tears pricked at the corners of your eyes. You closed the distance between you, reaching for his hand. He let you, fingers cold but steady. "Youâre never losing me,â you said, voice firm despite the emotion threatening to choke you. "Iâm here. Iâll always be here."
He looked down, chuckling emotionlessly, thumb brushing over your knuckles. "Sometimes, it feels like I canât breathe. Like Iâm drowning under it all."
You squeezed his hand, stepping closer until your chest touched his. "You donât have to carry it alone. I know I canât take the weight off your shoulders, but I can stand beside you. I can remind you that youâre more than the races, more than the wins or losses."
He closed his eyes, taking a shaky breath. When he opened them again, the anger had softened, replaced by something raw and unspoken. "Iâm sorry. I know I shut you out sometimes. Itâs not fair to you."
You shook your head. "You donât have to apologize for being human. I just⌠I want you to let me in. Let me help."
He reached up, cupping your face in his hands. His touch was gentle, a stark contrast to the tension that had been there moments ago. "I donât deserve you," he whispered, voice barely audible.
You smiled, tears slipping down your cheeks. "You deserve everything, Charles, my angel. And Iâll remind you of that every day if I have to."
He leaned his forehead against yours, the distance between you finally gone. For a long moment, neither of you spoke. The world around you faded away; the distant hum of the city, the gentle lapping of the waves. There was only this. Only him. Only Charles.
"Forever mine?" he whispered, his voice barely above a breath.
You pulled back just enough to look into his eyes, your heart swelling. "Forever yours."
He held you like you were the only thing keeping him grounded, his grip tight, almost desperate. The walls he had built around himself were still there, but for now, they had cracks, just enough to let you in.
As the wind carried the scent of salt and the promise of better days, you knew that this was how it would be. There would be fights, and fears, and moments where everything felt like it was falling apart. But there would also be this: quiet moments in the dark, where love felt like the strongest thing in the world.

fluff prompt #15: "you're my favorite person, you know that?
the night was unusually cold, the chill creeping into the room despite the thick blanket draped over both of you. the only light came from the faint glow of the lamp on the nightstand, casting soft, golden hues over wonwooâs face as he leaned back against the headboard.
you were curled up beside him, a book forgotten in your lap. the quiet was comfortable, filled only with the sound of his steady breathing and the occasional rustle of the blanket.
âitâs nice like this,â he said suddenly, his voice breaking the silence.
you turned your head slightly to look at him. âwhat is?â
âjust⌠us,â he said, his gaze dropping to where your hands rested against his arm. his voice was quiet, contemplative. âbeing here with you. no distractions, no rush to be anywhere.â
âyouâre not usually this sentimental,â you teased gently, though your heart was already starting to race.
he chuckled softly, the sound low and warm. âmaybe you just donât notice it.â
âor maybe you hide it well,â you countered, a smile tugging at your lips.
âmaybe,â he said, his tone light, though his eyes were serious as they flicked over to you.
you could feel the shift in the air, the way his words hung between you like something unspoken. âwonwoo,â you said, your voice soft.
âhmm?â he murmured, his gaze meeting yours.
âwhatâs on your mind?â
he hesitated for a moment, his fingers brushing against yours. âjust thinking,â he said finally.
âabout?â
he looked down, his thumb tracing lazy patterns against the back of your hand. âyou,â he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper.
your breath hitched, and you tilted your head to get a better look at him. âme?â
he nodded, his fingers idly tracing patterns on the sheets. âyeah. i was just thinking about how⌠about how much i like this. how much i like⌠us, & how different everything feels with you. better, i mean.â
âbetter?â you repeated, your voice barely above a whisper.
he looked up, meeting your gaze again. âyeah,â he said, his voice steady despite the way his heart was racing. âlike, even when everything else is a mess, when iâm with you, it doesnât feel so bad. it feels like⌠like i can breathe.â
your expression softened, and he saw the hint of a smile tugging at your lips. âwonwooâŚâ
âi mean it,â he said, his tone earnest. âyou make everything better. youâre⌠youâre my favorite person, you know that?â
your breath hitched, and for a moment, you just stared at him, your eyes searching his face.
âyour favorite person?â you asked, your voice trembling slightly.
he nodded, his hand reaching out to brush a strand of hair away from your face. âyeah. youâre the person i want to talk to when something good happens, and the person i want to see when things are hard. youâre the one who makes everything feel a little less heavy.â
your lips parted, but no words came out. he watched as your eyes shimmered, and his chest tightened.
âsorry,â he said quickly, pulling his hand back. âthat was probably too muchââ
âno,â you interrupted, your hand darting out to grab his. âitâs not too much.â
he stilled, his gaze dropping to where your fingers curled around his. âitâs not?â
you shook your head, your grip tightening slightly. âno. itâs⌠itâs exactly what i needed to hear.â
he let out a breath he hadnât realized heâd been holding, relief washing over him. âyeah?â
you smiled, and this time, it reached your eyes. âyeah, and for the record, youâre my favorite person too.â
after a moment, he spoke again, his voice softer this time. âsometimes i wonder what i did to deserve you.â
âwonwooâŚâ
âiâm serious,â he said, turning his head to look at you. âyou make everything better, just by being here. i donât think iâll ever stop being grateful for that.â
your chest felt tight, your heart swelling with an emotion you couldnât quite put into words. âyou donât have to deserve me,â you said finally. âweâre just⌠us. thatâs enough.â
he smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. âyeah,â he said softly. âit is.â
you rolled your eyes playfully, but the affection in your gaze was undeniable. âcome here,â you said, tugging on his hand.
he didnât hesitate, shifting closer until there was no space left between you. you tucked yourself against his chest, your head resting on his shoulder, and he wrapped his arms around you, holding you like you were the most precious thing in the world.
âthank you,â you murmured, your voice muffled against his shirt.
âfor what?â he asked, his chin resting lightly on the top of your head.
âfor being you,â you said simply.
he smiled, his heart feeling impossibly full.

Title: Slippery Slope. Fandom: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Rating: T. ( Cursing, Implications, Intensity) Pairing: Eventual Noa x Human!Reader.
***Notes: Sorry I havenât updated in a hot minute everyone. Life has been kicking my butt as well as my husbandâs. We had to prioritize, and then afterward I didnât feel like writing. Not promising regular updates again, but I am consistently working on this. As always, thank you for your support and kind comments. I love you all.
Chapter 13: Not the First
You
You had gone to bed last night, stomach burning and body restless from the day that had transpired. The only comfort had been that Micheal apparently did not care about Anayaâs scent all over you the way the apes cared about his. He had snuggled in close to you as you laid there, thinking about how you would handle the balancing act between the two- no three, species moving forward. Anaya accepted Micheal, at least he stopped trying to kill him once he knew you cared about him. If Noa knew you cared about Micheal, maybe he would also leave him alone? Maybe, he could understand you caring about another animal? He cared about you, didnât he? At least a little bit. Certainly enough to come talk to you after a fight.
That had caused you to toss and turn even more, not really knowing why Noa had shown up. Maybe he had still been angry, but seeing the situation with you and Anaya had distracted him enough to let it go temporarily. You could only imagine what you had looked like, the definition of sheer panic coming to mind. Noa had always been attentive to your feelingsâŚhe probably did push his anger to the side when he saw you were scared. You believed he did anyway, that was just the way he was. Caring, patient, and understanding to a fault.
That thought only served to remind you that the next morning you needed to face him. You needed to apologize for hitting him, maybe talk about the future between you and the clan. You were obviously putting him in a tight spot with the elders. Thatâs not even speaking about the rock and hard place you were placing Anaya in by having him keep your secret. The elders expected you to show yourselfâŚyou had no idea how you would manage that either. If Soona, Anaya, and Noa were there with you, then you should have no trouble feeling safe, but there was something else that made you shudder at the thought. You had this feeling you would be losing something, this small peace you found with your three ape friends. That small, fragile peace built on mutual respect and trust.
You had scoffed at that. Today was an example of how easily trust could be broken, but also re-built. In all fairness, the apes never really expected much from you. Noa even took great pains to make it clear to you that you could always say no. If they asked you to do something you didnât want to, they wouldnât force youâŚbut this Caesar Council was a different animal all together. Anaya wanted you to be a part of it, which meant you would be a part of the clanâŚeven if it was indirectly. Either way, it changed things. Anaya said Noa had created new laws, and this council was one of them. That would need to be something you discussed with Noa down the roadâŚprobably not tomorrow.
You had almost rambled yourself to sleep at that point, when your eyes had flown open wide and you realized you never decided when you would meet Noa at the rock. Anaya had simply said he would show him where it was. You had groaned and snuggled in deeper under your blanket, knowing you had an early start the next morning.
So here you were, sunbathing on your chunk of safety in the middle of the creek. You were soaking wet from your swim, making sure to scrub away Michealâs scent as you made your way to your rock. Thankfully, you had sense enough to wear a dirty top that needed to be washed anyway, as well as your singular pair of shorts your reserved for the extreme heats of summer. This summer had not been too bad so far, but today the garment served a new purpose of keeping your modesty while you swam. You would not be caught naked in front of Noa like you had with Anaya. You knew he hadnât seen anything of course, but you still were not going to repeat your actions and risk the possibility of Noa seeing you naked.
You rubbed at your eyes, a yawn sneaking up on you as you became more comfortable. You were sure Noa didnât care about your body anymore than Anaya did, but it was the principle of the matter. Humans and their prideâŚnot that you had much to begin with. Still, you clung to the slivers you did have.
You had just fully settled in, sleep creeping along the edges of your consciousness, the early morning sun warming you perfectly, when you heard the hoots of apes. You stretched, turning your head to glance to your right, but did not see hide nor hair of Noa or Anaya. This confused you at first. Did you imagine the noise? You closed your eyes again, only to have them fly open when you heard it again. This time, it was to your leftâŚon the other side of the creek.
You froze for a moment, daring to turn your head at a snails pace to your left. The noises were clearer now. While you were sure they were chimpanzee hoots, they definitely did not sound like gorilla noises, you were still uneasy. Once your head was fully turned, you were surprised to still hear the noises, but see nothing on the other side of the creek.
You sat up slowly, hesitantly, confusion spiking as you looked left, then right once more. Nothing. You pushed yourself up onto your knees, frantically searching for the source of the sounds. You swiveled around on the dry stone, turning in a full circle as your eyes desperately scanned for something that simply wasnât there. Were you going crazy? You swore you could hear ape noises. You stopped, closing your eyes and listening more intently.
There!
It was coming from your left, as you originally thought, but no matter how hard you looked, you could not see anyone approaching. The tree line was clear up and down stream. Still, you heard the noises, and the longer you heard them, the more pitiful they sounded. Was someone in pain? Were they hurt? What if they were calling for help? You rose into a standing position, practically on tip-toe, blocking the sun from your eyes with your hands in an attempt to see better.
Finally, you spotted the smallest of movements along the bank. It seemed it was just a baby chimpanzee, crouched down on the edge of the creek among the bushes. You felt your lips turn down into a frown, the scared looking chimp tugging at your heartstrings. How did they get here? Why were they all alone? You opened your mouth to call out to them, but immediately stopped yourself, dropping back down to plaster yourself flat against the rock.
No baby would be left alone like this.
You suddenly felt very exposed, creeping yourself back to the edge of the rock before quietly lowering your body back into the water. You stayed behind the rock, on the opposite side of the chimp, who did not seem to be aware of your presence at all. You peaked around the edge, wanting to keep an eye out, but not wanting to be seen. You couldnât leave the baby alone, but you were still wary to approach them, lest an angry mother burst through the clearing and see you as a threat.
You waited silently, patiently. After a few more minutes of the chimp hooting and no one coming, you heard the noises change. It sounded like- were theyâŚcrying? Could apes cry? You floated there, transfixed by the tiny chimp, who curled its arms around itself and sat there sobbing. You fought the urge to reveal yourself, but in the end your heart overruled your head. The chimp was just a baby, you couldnât leave them there alone and scared.
You carefully maneuvered around the rock, making your way towards the sobbing baby on the bank. You stopped when you felt muddy earth between your toes, water still up to your chest. You called out softly, so as not to scare them, âDo you need help? Are you lost?â
Your soft and careful voice did nothing to soothe the chimp, who jumped back from the edge and started screeching louder. You winced, muscles tensing and nerves screaming at you to swim away and leave. Something in your brain decided against that though, your hands coming up from the water to quickly sign, Friend. No hurt. Safe. Need help?
The baby went silent before you even signed the question, staring at you as if you suddenly became the most fascinating thing they had ever seen. You watched their eyes dart from your hands, to your eyes, to your body in the water, and back to your hands. You repeated the four phrases, wondering if they understood sign yet or if they were too young. Then, after another moment of intense staring, they raised their hand. It was hesitant, but they signed, Alone. Help. Afraid.
You swallowed, âDo you understand what Iâm saying?â
Another moment of hesitation, then a nod and a signed, Yes.
âOkay,â you took a deep breath. âIâm going to come to you. Iâm going to walk up to the bank and sit with you. Alright?â
They nodded again.
You returned the nod, slowly walking up the incline until you made it to the edge. The baby did not seem to realize how big you were, head tilting back as you continued to approach. When they could no longer lean back they scrambled to their feet, crouched on all fours before backing up a few steps. You couldnât blame them, Micheal was easily twice their size. You ran a hand through your wet hair, body slipping down into a sitting position before you crossed your legs. You didnât want to frighten them anymore than you already had, so you sat and waited. After a moment or two the chimp made their way to you, knuckles brushing against your exposed thigh. They flinched back immediately, as if you would strike at them like a cobra. You let out a breath, trying to smile as you signed, Friend. Safe. Protect.
The furrowed brows and downturned mouth of the chimp eased into something more neutral, more curious, as they decided to climb into your lap. You fought the intense urge to lock up and stiffen your muscles in preparation for an attack. You tried instead to think of the baby as if they were Micheal. They were more open than him though, pinching and pulling at your wet clothes in fascination. That didnât hold their attention for long though, as they poked at the meat of your upper arms. That forced a giggle out of you, watching them get closer and continue to poke the exposed flesh.
You bit your lip in concentration then, fighting off more laughter, âDo you know where your parents are?â
The chimp paused only long enough to shake their head.
You blew air out of your mouth then in a slow exhale, âDo you have a name?â
The chimp paused, making a gesture over and over that you did not understand. You shook your head, trying to explain that you did not understand. The chimp pouted, opening up their mouth suddenly in a widely comical elongated fashion. You heard a few intakes of air before they huffed and screeched, âEâŚEâŚE.â
The loud noise was shrill against your ears. You winced slightly, holding up the hand they werenât clutching onto, âOkay, okay, easy there. Donât strain yourself. You canât talk yet, thatâs okay. E is good enough for me.â
E nodded once, puffing their cheeks, before they continued to poke and jab at your arm. You became increasingly confused, watching them and trying to parcel out the reason. Then, they noticed the fascination in their gaze as they dragged a finger down your arm in a slow push. You saw your skin lighten in color from the pressure before darkening again, and you smiled. The color change was something they had probably never seen in an ape before. You let them play to their hearts content, so focused on them that you had lost track of your surroundings.
Then someone called your name.
You snapped your head up, finding Soona standing a few feet in front of you, an unfamiliar Eagle perched on her arm. You breathed a sigh of relief as she began to screech and hoot in delight, âYouâŚfound her.â
âHer?â You parroted.
Soona pointed to chimp in your arms, who seemed happier, but reluctant to leave your side. The Eagle on Soonaâs arm was given a signal and quickly flew away as she explained, âWandered offâŚhave been searchingâŚlong time.â
Your brow furrowed at that, âWandered off? Your village is far from here, how did she get this far by herself?â
Soona shook her head, trudging over towards you and practically falling down next to you. She seemed exhausted. âNot fromâŚvillageâŚfrom group ofâŚyounglingsâŚupstream.â
Soona held out a hand, which the smaller ape happily grasped a finger of. When Soona reached for her though, E gave a small shout of protest before moving to the opposite side of your body. Soona looked surprised, the young ape becoming fascinated now with your wet, matted hair. She stood on two legs, leaning against your chest for balance as she pulled and tugged at the strands. You winced slightly, but chuckled good naturedly as you locked eyes with Soona.
She broke eye contact for a moment, gaze turning towards the empty forest off to the side. Before you could ask if something was wrong, her attention was back on you, head tilting slightly as she asked, âYou areâŚbetterâŚthan yesterday?â
You shrugged a shoulder, catching E starting to braid the pieces of your hair that were almost dry. âI guess. I hope you know that I never meant to offend you, or your clan. Iâm sorry if you were expecting me and I never showed. I just wasnâtâŚprepared to see your village.â
Soona hummed, âNoaâŚshould have told youâŚshould have told usâŚsoonerâŚI amâŚsorryâŚthat apes have notâŚalways been kindâŚto you.â
E tilted her head up then, her question obvious though she could not voice it. You shook your head, âThereâs nothing for you to be sorry about. It wasnât you who was un-kind to me. You, Anaya, and Noa have been nothing but kind to meâŚfor the most part.â
âYou areâŚstill angryâŚwith Noa?â Soona asked carefully.
You puffed out a long breath, thinking, snickering as E did her best to mimic your noise. You pulled more hair from your back to your front, noticing she enjoyed braiding. You hoped it would keep her distracted from the conversation, âCan anyone truly stay mad at Noa?â
Soona seemed to brighten at this, but chose to remain silent as you continued, âI understand why he did what he did. I donât like it, but I understand it. The real problem that dayâŚwellâŚitâs justâŚ. I know there are barriers between our species. Itâs more than just speech, and IâŚI mean, these problems probably have carried over from hundreds of years of differences. You three have been great, but the part that upsets me is that Noa seems to choose to ignore the fact that apes and humans donât normally co-exist peacefully. We do, but Iâve also experienced the other end of the spectrum between our species. And Noa justâŚâ
Soona hummed, âThink heâŚdoes not seeâŚthe differencesâŚin youâŚbut you cannot helpâŚbut see themâŚin us.â
You hesitated, but ultimately nodded in agreement. âI donât hold being apes against you or your clan, I justâŚwish he understood what it feels like. To not know if you can trust the person- ape, next to you. To not know if they are going to turn on you, betray you, or even hurt you.â
E, who you assumed had been distracted by her task, stopped immediately. She looked up at you then, a soft coo leaving her as she patted your shoulder. You snorted, using a single finger to mirror her actions. She hooted in clear amusement, leaning her head into your shoulder, rubbing her face against you before sliding down into your lap. She seemed tired now, curling into your side and closing her eyes. You felt a smile slowly creep onto your face, carefully using two fingers to stroke the top of the chimpâs head. She snuggled in closer then, gripping tightly onto your shirt as tears threatened your vision and you thought your heart was actually going to explode.
Get a grip.
Your hormones must be crazy right now. At least, thatâs what you told yourself, as you brushed a hand along the loose braids along your shoulder. Soona, as she tends to do, had remained quiet during this exchange. She studied you, noticing how emotional you had become, scenting the air quietly before admitting, âNoa does knowâŚwhat it is likeâŚto be betrayed.â
This surprised you, your attention quickly brought back to the present conversation. Your eyebrows rose, curiosity peaked as you asked, âBy a fellow ape?â
Soona shook her head, causing confusion to drown your mind until she spoke, âBy aâŚEchoâŚyou are not the firstâŚthat could speakâŚthat Noa has met.â
You felt your jaw go slack, trying to contain your excitement as you asked, âThere are other humans around who can speak?â
âThere was one,â Soona answered, lips pursed as she noted your disappointment. âWe do not knowâŚwhere she wentâŚleft five seasons agoâŚhave not seen her sinceâŚher name wasâŚMae.â
You nodded, urging Soona to continue, âWhat happened with Mae? You said sheâŚbetrayed Noa? How?â
Soona sighed, âWe do notâŚnormally speak of herâŚshe was a sourceâŚof much pain andâŚconfusion for NoaâŚthinkâŚyou should know.â
You waited, allowing Soona to collect her thoughts. âThere was apeâŚProximusâŚhe was king of apesâŚhe searched for MaeâŚkilled other humans thatâŚwere with herâŚwanted to get insideâŚa human vaultâŚit held great weaponsâŚthat would make ProximusâŚmore powerful.â
A shiver ran down your spine, remembering the ape Sylva that Anaya had spoken of. He never mentioned this Proximus ape though. Wanting a better idea of the situation you asked, âWho was Sylva to Proximus?â
Soona seemed completely surprised you knew that name, but nevertheless answered, âSylva wasâŚhis GeneralâŚnot sure if that is an ape wordâŚor a human word.â
You swallowed, âItâs humanâŚProximus seems to have already been an advanced ape.â
Soona curled more into herself then, âHe wasâŚ.we all were afraidâŚif not for NoaâŚand MaeâŚEagle Clan would notâŚbe here.â
âProximus ordered your clan to be stolen, and Sylva carried out his orders.â You connected the dots then, âWhat happened to Proximus?â
âNoa stopped him,â Soona answered without hesitation.
This surprised you. You were aware that Noa killed Sylva, but Proximus as well? Noa did not seem like he was violent, or capable of such great strengths. You assumed he had killed Sylva, a gorilla, by outsmarting himâŚbut Proximus? How? Was Noa secretly more dangerous than you gave him credit for?
Soona grunted then, pulling you out of your thoughts, âNoa saysâŚMae hid from ProximusâŚin our villageâŚNoa accidentallyâŚlead them to usâŚthe entire clan was takenâŚNoa tracked usâŚfor many daysâŚMae followedâŚNoa did not know she could speakâŚuntil she called his nameâŚSylva was closeâŚshe was scaredâŚshe chose Noa asâŚlesser of the two apesâŚto fear.â
âSo, she lied.â You offered, âNoa was betrayed by her traveling with him but he didnât know she could speak, or that Proximus was hunting her.â
Soona nodded, âMore than thatâŚwhen Noa and MaeâŚwere taken to ProximusâŚhe learned she sharedâŚthe same goalâŚas ProximusâŚshe wanted toâŚget insideâŚget a bookâŚthat could help humansâŚlearn to speakâŚagain.â
âThatâŚâ you hesitated. You wondered how much to say. A book could not bring back humanâs ability to speak. You either were immune or you were notâŚunless there was a record of some sort. Maybe a cureâŚa vaccine? Had humans halfway across the world developed their salvation but been unable to share it with anyone outside the vault?
You remembered your vault constantly sending out a signal using the available satellites orbiting Earth, but they never received a response. So much had been lost to timeâŚand if there had been a cure all along? You swallowed the bile in your throat at the thought of how many millions died over time who couldnât even speak.
You shook your head, âThat sounds incredible. Did she find what she was looking for?â
Soona nodded, âNoa helpedâŚwe helped herâŚbut sheâŚdid not help the clan.â
You tilted your head, âWhat do you mean?â
Soona huffed, clearly agitated, âThe reasonâŚwe do notâŚspeak of herâŚshe flooded Proximusâ kingdomâŚkilled many apesâŚin the processâŚthen ran away.â
âIâm sorryâŚâ It was the only thing you could think to say as silence engulfed the both of you.
âNoaâŚâ Soona began, attention once again towards the forest at your backs. You waited, brows raised as Soona turned back to you. âNoa wasâŚdifferentâŚafter meeting MaeâŚis differentâŚwith youâŚnow.â
Something about that sentence sent chills down your spine. There was many implications, and you chose to ask the most obvious of them, âDoes Noa think Iâll turn out to be like Mae? That Iâll betray him? Hurt him or the clan? Is that why heâs always watching me, always careful around me?â
Soona shook her head, âNoa knowsâŚyou are not like MaeâŚyou areâŚwhat he wishedâŚMae wasâŚwants to make sureâŚhe does not becomeâŚ.like MaeâŚto you.â
You sighed, running a hand through your hair, âIâŚI threw a rock at him yesterday. I made a mistakeâŚI already hurt him. He shouldnât think that Iâm not like herâŚI could be. Iâm human after all.â
âHumanâŚâ Soona began, hand coming to rest on your shoulder. âDoes not mean badâŚapeâŚdoes not mean goodâŚNoa saysâŚwants others to learnâŚwe are betterâŚstrongerâŚgood and badâŚtogetherâŚmore alikeâŚthan either sideâŚwants to speak of.â
Still cradling the sleeping E in your lap, you leaned your body into Soonaâs, head coming to rest between her neck and her shoulder. Her hand slid from your shoulder to the back of your head, leaning in to return your half-hug as well. She patted your head a few times as you sighed, âThank you, Soona.â
There was silence, peaceful this time. E breathed heavily in your lap from sleep, and the creek next to you trickled soothingly while the sun climbed higher in the sky. You took a deep breath, feeling more prepared to speak to Noa than you had been before. There was a distinct crack sound behind you, causing both you and Soona to turn.
You saw some leaves fall from a tree not to far back, but couldnât make out anything more than that. You thought you saw movement for a moment, shielding your eyes with your hand once more, when Soonaâs Eagle tore through the canopy and landed next to her on the ground. She stood too quickly then for your liking, looking upstream before turning back to you.
Her eyes were pleading, almost desperate as she said, âDo notâŚbe scaredâŚdo not run.â
You were confused, until you heard the litter patter of many feet moving towards you. You leaned your body to see past Soona, body tensing and breath freezing at what you saw. Many apes, children from the looks of it, were running down stream towards the both of you. You suddenly did not want to be on the ground.
You carefully scooped E from your lap, holding her close to your chest as you practically leapt to your feet. Whether from being moved or the sudden frantic beat of your heart, E woke with a start. She began to hoot and squirm in your arms. You clutched her tighter to you, feeling your breathing become labored, taking a step or two back in fear. You didnât get much further, Soonaâs arm coming up to hold your arm.
You jerked towards her with frantic eyes. Hers were still calm, concerned as she tried to comfort you. âI amâŚhereâŚtrust.â
As the apes came closer, you swallowed hard, nodding a few times before taking a step closer, behind her. She hummed, screeching at the apes a few moments later. They came skidding to a stop in front of you, all of them transfixed, as if they had never seen a human before. You reasoned, that perhaps they hadnât. You tried to take deep, discreet breaths to calm your nerves. None of them were taller than your waist, but the thought of so many surrounding you still made you nervous.
Suddenly, the biggest of the bunch stepped forward, sniffing at your feet for a moment before glancing up to meet your gaze. His held tilted in confusion as he demanded in a voice that sounded much younger than he looked, âWhy does EdenâŚget to be carriedâŚby the Echo?â

(Originally put this as a comment but it got too long, whoops. Suppose that's what happens when you Enjoy the technical, math based side of worldbuilding :b)
About the screaming death - if we're looking at this from like, a percentage chance out of X population and give a rough life expectancy and clutch size:
(Please note I'm not trying to be rude or anything, you've just got me curious and I'm thinking about it now. This is just a lot of fun guess work lol.)
Let's say out of the 170 islands in the franchise(according to the wiki, which I'm assuming includes the comics) there's probably whisperingdeaths on 10-20 of them since they seem to be less common than nadders, gronkles, etc.
So we go middle and say theirs a decent population on 15 islands.
Given there's probably a Max to how many live on one island, because if not then they'd start collapsing like in Appetite For Destruction, we'd need to figure out what the max is.
Since there's competition between other dragons and the islands we see in RTTE(the best ref I've got) seem to be around 20km² let's estimate 3 whisperingdeaths per km² so 60 per island.
The outlier here would be Whisperingdeath island which seems to be around the same size but only have whisperingdeaths - so probably something like 6 whisperingdeaths per km² which gives us 120. 60 à 14 for the other islands is 840 so 960 adult whisperingdeaths in this snapshot for the purpose of this speculation.
They probably don't live quite as long as humans, so average life expectancy of 60. The screamingdeath was full grown in 3 years so they probably have a clutch every 3 years - 57 years of reproduction gives us 19 clutches per mama whisperingdeath(960á2=480, but I imagine not every one has clutches every 3 years so let's go with 300) and they seem to have pretty decent sized clutches based off how many eggs the Outcasts put under Berk(I'm not using the hatched whisperingdeaths as a measurement here because they would've only animated so many due to funding and time) so roughly 8 eggs per clutch. But not every egg will hatch so let's say 6. 6à 19 is 144, multiply by 300 is 34,200 whisperingdeaths are hatched every 60ish years. Of course not every one makes it to adulthood(predation, illness, injuries etc.) So let's give them a 50% survival rate to adulthood(or at least like, to sub-adult territory) which gives us: 17,100.
If screamingdeaths are a 1-1000 chance that means roughly 17 screamingdeaths make it to adulthood each 60ish years. So they're very few and far between, but it's not impossible that they've met one another - especially since there seems to be very few natural predators once they're fully grown.
everyoneâs all like âoh no poor toothless heâs the only one of his kindâ and donât get me wrong that is super sad but also donât forget
-the buffalord
-the screaming death
-the skrill (i think)
-the eruptodon
were all the only one of their kinds too :c

do you think when flowey was a wee weed and just got into calling himself flowey that he had a kind of embarrassing stage he does not want to talk or even think about where he tried too hard to be the opposite of asriel and it was so obvious everyone could tell it was asriel
BAHAHAHAHA, YOU BET I DO! this is probably going to be as headcanon-y as it gets (kinda), sorry in advance. but really, making him a total sopping wet soggy loser is the best part of writing him. it's my favorite angle, no doubt.
the first month of being "flowey" was an exercise in second-hand embarrassment, except the person you're embarrassed for is yourself. and you can't even leave the room to escape it, because surprise! you are the room. you're a flower. stuck there. living it.
he had it all planned out. goodbye asriel dreemurr, the prince of crying-at-literally-everything, hello to... whatever cool and clever thing he was supposed to become. the details were fuzzy, but he figured being soulless meant the whole "evil" thing would come naturally.
it did not come naturally.
the cracks showed almost immediately. everything he tried just came out wrong. his threats sounded more like worried suggestions. his evil schemes kept accidentally making things better. his idea of entropy was essentially community service with attitude.
he couldn't even get the basics right. he'd tried tossing out sick burns, but they'd just hit with all the impact of a wet napkin. they weren't even insults half the timeâjust weirdly specific observations that petered off awkwardly.
he sucked at it. no way around it. he sucked ass.
so, he worked harder. determined to sound edgy, bad to the stemâwhatever that meantâbut it didnât seem to take. every affront felt more like an accident than an attack.Â
and the laugh. god, the laugh. he practiced it, forced it, tried every variation. dry chuckles, derisive cackles, even an exaggerated villainâs howl. none of them worked. what kept slipping out instead was the exact same dorky laugh that used to bubble up when #she would do silly voices during storytime.
this was the worst. he was the worst at being the worst.
his own body double-crossed him at every turn, still running on years of ingrained kindness his mind was trying to stamp out. he'd be right in the middle of his most "menacing" speech yet, really getting into the whole eternal suffering thing, when someone would sneeze.
"bless you!"
every. time.
the number of âvillainyâ monologues ruined by his automatic politeness was actually impressive. really, it was almost a talent.
it was a drawn-out process, this transformation. no guidebooks or cheat sheets. however... iâd argue the closest thing he had to a mentor here was toriel.
she didn't know it was him. obviously. somehow that made it worse, because she kept almost-recognizing things. little stuff he hadn't managed to burn away yet.
a familiar turn of phrase. how he'd end sentences. that godawful giggle that still sounded too much like pillow forts and frolicking in the mud. how heâd fill glasses, just enough to make them brim above the edge. the efficient way.
each time her eyes would catch on these moments, these tiny betrayals of self, he'd slam that reset button with all six petals. nu-uh, no buckaroo.
her reactions were the compass he followed, pointing to what needed to be carved away. reset after reset, he got better at it. harsher. finer. a little less like the kid who used to run up to her with flower crowns and scraped knees.Â
the kindnesses got rarer; the callousness came easier.
never easy enough, though.
she'd still tilt her head sometimes, something glittering in her eyes like she was hearing the first few notes of a song sheâd once known by heart. and he'd realize he'd effed up again, let some stupid little piece of asriel show through.
sheâd never know she was teaching him how to stop being her son. to her, he was just some weird flower guy that occasionally felt eerily familiar, though she couldnât quite put her finger on why.
every time she almost intuited something in him, he'd reload, desperate to finally become someone she wouldn't know at all.
ahhhhh. and so it came full circle. in his frenzied bid to unlearn being her child, he was still (by the most bruisingly contorted logic) turning to her for guidance. still just a kid, looking to his mom for answers. just⌠not in the way either of them wouldâve wanted.

The Use of the Heart
Good evening, followers! I've got a new story for y'all. ~9.8k words. Yeah, this one's long. If you'd like to toss me a tip for it, you can drop one on my ko-fi page here. It...did take me three weeks to write this one.
Avery hadnât gotten more than a foot out of the carriage after his sister before she was whisked away to meet her new husband. He stumbled the rest of the way out onto the stone courtyard and nearly fell on his face. âWaiââ
He bit his tongue before he could finish the protest. They were here so Lisette could meet her new husband. If the crown prince wanted to meet her fresh off the ship that had brought them here, smelling like dead fish and stale sweat from not being able to properly bathe for two weeks, thenâŚ
Then, well, at least all the treaties were already signed in case he changed his mind.
Avery righted himself. The handful of attendants Lisette had brought with her were already busy unloading her trunks and consulting with people he didnât recognizeâprobably their counterparts in Alham. They would know where he was meant to go.
He made a beeline for Robin, the woman in charge of his sisterâs affairs, who was blushing and smiling at a man with dark hair and neat, plain clothes in the dark blue that was Alhamâs royal colors. Someone who worked for Lisetteâs new husband, maybe. He pointed Robin off, and Avery immediately took her place. âHello. I was hoping you could help me.â
The man gave him a once over that no one had ever given Avery before, then said, âWith what exactly?â
âIâve just arrived with the rest of the contingent from Ensheren. I was hoping you knew where to steer me.â
âYou donât already know what you should be doing?â
Averyâs face turned an unflattering shade of pink at the incredulity in his voice. âIâm only here to keep my sister company and help her settle into her new home. Unfortunately, as sheâs already been escorted off without me to see her new husband, Iâm at loose ends in the meantime. You could tell me where her rooms are and I can start there.â
The manâs eyes widened. âSisteâEnsheren sent one of its princes? Your Highness, Iâm so sorry. I wasnât told you were coming.â
Averyâs heel dug into the stone under the sole of his boot, twisting anxiously. He was too tired to deal with this. âNot one of the important ones, Iâm afraid. After youâve had your heir, your spare, your backup spare, one to handle the people, and one to handle the military, you run out of things to do with princes.â
One dark eyebrow went up. âYour parents had quite a few children.â
âThey were hoping for Lisette after the second set of twins,â Avery said. âMy name is Avery. And I really am here to help my sister adjust. If you could tell me where her rooms are, that would be a good start. I can help set it up for her before she returns.â
The man stared at him quietly for another long moment before saying, âYour HighnessâŚI apologize for the bluntness, but you look like youâre about to keel over. I donât think youâll be much help with anything your sister needs. Give me a moment to settle things here.â He reached out and steadied Averyâs arm, and Avery was startled to find heâd been listing to one side. âYouâll be okay to wait?â
Avery nodded, and shook himself to wake up a bit more. It had taken him the entire two weeks to stop vomiting over the edge of the ship, just in time to land and find his legs wobbly again.
The man frowned at him, but let go and turned away to speak to some of the others bustling back and forth over the courtyard while Avery tried to gain his footing. He hadnât felt so bad sitting in the carriage, but now that he was standing in full sun without Lisette, his vision was starting to blur with exhaustion.
Fortunately, his guide was back before Avery could do something stupid, like pass out on the stone in front of everyone. And he frowned the second he saw Avery. âWould you like an arm?â
Avery paused for a second. Then he said, âYes. Please. Thank you. Whatever accepts the offer fastest.â
The man laughed, warm and full and genuine, then took Averyâs bag from him and wrapped an arm around Averyâs ribs. Avery tilted his head against the manâs shoulder and let him lead him into theâcastle? Palace? Avery wasnât sure. But it was less of a fortress than Ensherenâs royal residences. A good place for his sister to call home.
Inside was cooler, and Avery felt better immediately. His guide shifted his arm so at least a quarter of Averyâs weight was resting on his shoulder, and Avery let his settle against it, too. It was the first time since heâd gotten on that damn boat that he felt stable and his stomach stopped churning. But maybe that was because his guide smelled soothing and warm, like ginger cookies, orâŚor cinnamon. Whatever it was, Averyâs stomach stopped rolling over.
He managed to lift his head enough to look around as his guide practically dragged him through the polished hallways. He didnât absorb most of itâjust the impression of dark wood panels, wide windows letting in bright sunlight, and sculptures and paintings at every intersection. They passed through a set of heavy double doors in carved wood, and then into a smaller door down the hallway from that, and his guide let him go to stand on his own again.
They were in private chambers. Empty ones. Two doors were set against the far wall, and another one to Averyâs left. Between them were three couches and two armchairs, and one large table.
âThese are my rooms,â his guide said. âYou can bathe here and then take a nap while we wait for your sister and Kavi to come up for air and remember anyone else exists.â
âKavi?â Avery asked.
âMy brother,â his guide said. âYour sisterâs new husband.â
âYourâyour brother?â
His guide smiled at him. âMy brother.â
The floor felt closer than it should have. âKing Solon,â Avery said. âIâIâm sorry, Your Majesty. No one ever told me what you looked like.â
âIâd gathered,â the king said. âAnd no one told me you were coming. Weâll just have to both forgive each other. The bath is over here. Iâll find something for you to wear and Iâll put it in the dressing room.â
He left Avery alone in an alcove off of a bathing room with a bench. Avery sat down abruptly and pressed his face into his hands. Heâd spent at least fifteen minutes using the king of a foreign countryâthe one Lisetteâs fate was in the hands ofâas a crutch.
While smelling like a cheap fishmonger who didnât know what hygiene was.
What a wonderful first impression Ensheren was making on their new allies.
~~~~~~~~
The bath was large enough for Avery to stretch out in and had taps that ran fresh hot water. He slid in with a sigh and opened the jars next to him, looking for shampoo and soap. The first one had the same strong ginger scent the king had whenâ
When Avery had practically shoved his nose into his neck.
His face went red, and it wasnât from the steam of the bath water.
The bottle was thin oil, though, not proper soap or shampoo. Avery left it open to scent the air while he cleaned up, and it was thick and heady in the bathroom by the time he felt properly clean and presentable The kingâor someone who worked for himâhad left clean clothes in the sitting room on the bench. They werenât from his luggage, but if he didnât have a room, no one would have unpacked his things, either. He ran his fingers over the soft fabric, then pulled them on.
Soft pants, longer socks than Avery was used to, a shirt in a pale goldenrod color, and a dark blue tunic to go over it. He fiddled with the laces, unsure how tight Alham expected people to wear their clothing. Ensheren usually wore things closely fitted.
He tightened the waist in and tucked the extra lacing inside to hide it. Might as well remind the king he was from a foreign country. Maybe it would give him some grace for treating him like a walking stick.
His face flushed again at the memory, and he fiddled with his boots, waiting for the blush to fade before he stepped back into the sitting room.
The king was curled at a desk near one of the wide windows, feet tucked next to his legs. He glanced up from whatever he was writing when Avery joined him. âFeeling any better, Your Highness?â
Avery nodded. âThank you, Your Majesty.â
âSolon. My name is Solon.â
Avery almost laughed in surprise. His breath came out in a sudden huff anyway. âYou just called me Your Highness!â
Solon grinned. âYou didnât give me permission not to. I did.â
âIâll call you by your name if you call me Avery,â he said.
âI think thatâs a fair deal, Avery.â Solon made a soft humming sound. âYou should get some sleep. Iâm afraid theyâre still cleaning up your rooms and hauling your things in there. Itâll be a few hours, I think.â
âIââ
âAre you not tired yet? If you want to stay up for a bit, I could use your help.â
The bath had woken Avery up, although he knew heâd fall asleep in minutes if he lay down. But he didnât have a room yet, so did Solon want him to take his bed?
Avery tore his thoughts away from that. âWhat did you need?â
Solon waved to the chairs nearby. âPull one of those up.â
Avery grabbed the nearest chair and slid it to where Solon pointed, then tucked himself into it while Solon rummaged for a clean sheet of paper. He handed Avery the pen. âYour family. Iâm realizing I know very little about what my brother married into.â
Avery fiddled with the pen. âThen why did you agree to it?â
âHonestly, once I saw how Kavi reacted to your sisterâs letters, I was sold on the arrangement. HeâŚwell. He liked what he learned of her immediately. And the details of treaties like this arenât my job.â
Avery frowned. âYouâre the king.â
Solon tilted his head. âI am. But Iâwell. Alhamâs parliament decides what powers the monarch has. They vote on it every five years. And while the current officials are happy enough to have me help lead and oversee laws and even introduce some of my own, details of things like this are not my forte. Far more talented people than I do that.â
âTheyâvote? On what youâre allowed to do?â
Solon nodded. âThe laws here donât allow them to get rid of a monarch, exactly. But they can refuse to give an unpopular monarch or one no one trusts power until they abdicate. My grandfather was blocked from doing anything for three decades until he let my father take over. And my father only won their trust back by working his way up through the legislature and learning how it worked before they let him do anything.â
Avery cleared his throat. âIâm sorry. I only had the time on the ship to read up on your country, and nothing like that was mentioned. I didnât realize.â
Solon nudged the paper closer to Avery. âA family tree, please. And what each of you does. Iâd ask your sister, but Iâm not willing to interrupt newlyweds on their first day and night together.â
Aver turned pink at the implication. âI can do that.â
He drew marks for both his parents first, then took up the entire width of the paper to list out his brothers. âMy father is the reigning king. He spends his days meeting with his advisors and the elected governors from each of the counties at home to make decisions and decide how theyâre going to go be done.â
Avery drew two branches off the same root from his parents. âThese are the oldest twins. Jamie is the heir. He spends his days shadowing our father and trying to learn everything and how to run things. He has two kids with his wife, but theyâre both too young to take on any responsibilities yet. Zeke is second in line. He handles all the petitioners from around the country who arrive and need to speak to someone, and figures out how to resolve things. And if he canât, he goes to Jamie and Dad.â
Avery drew another line. âAnd then the next twins, Jack and Max. Jack filters things for the older ones and makes sure that theyâre not overwhelmed with too many things. He decides whatâs most important to get their attention first, and redirects everyone else to other ways of handling issues.â
Solon hummed. âI think Jack was the one who first sent the letters of interest to me proposing I marry your sister.â
âYou?â
Solon waved his hand. âKavi was always more interested in marriage and children than I ever was. I suggested him to your brother instead, and he accepted. Your sister will still be the mother to any heirs. Alham doesnât need a queen or a prince consort.â
âTheâŚthe prince consort?â
âThe husband to the monarch. If I had one.â
Averyâs mouth fell open. The king could have a husband, if he wanted? Something burned in his stomach. His family had never said anything about his interest in other men, but Avery wasâhe was useless. And Ensheren didnât need yet another heir. It was for the best he wouldnât have any other children.
âTheâŚthe way your country works is very different than Iâd imagined,â Avery said, choking back something clogging his throat to stare at the paper.
âIâm realizing that. Is marriage between two people of the same sex not allowed in Ensheren?â
Avery lifted one hand and found it shaking, and he waggled it back and forth. âNo, weâŚ.we can, mostly. But the kingâŚmy father, or my brother, could neverâtheyâthey need to have children. Have direct heirs. Itâs allowed for most people, but there are people with power who just. Canât.â
Solon stared at his shaking hand for a long moment, then said, âTell me about Max.â
Avery forced himself to look back at the paper. âMax does whatever he wants. Heâs the most charming of us. He likes to mingle with the people in town and the rest of the country without going through proper channels. Itâs hard to figure out when heâs in the castle and when heâs out. And he never tells anyone what heâs up to before goes and does it. Honestly, we usually hear of his escapades from the papers first. But it means he has more information on how things are going in the country than any of the rest of us. Itâs why everyone likes him so much.â
âYou like him,â Solon said.
âHeâs everyoneâs favorite brother,â Avery said. âEven Lisetteâs.â
âAnd yet youâre here with her and not Max.â
âI donât think Max has ever left the country. I donât think he wants to. Besides, heâs busy. Formally, heâs in charge of most of the internal affairs of the country before anything has to be escalated.â Avery drew the next line before Solon could ask any more questions. âThis is Lennox. He grew up watching after the knights training grounds and begging him to teach them, and joined up as soon as our father finally gave him permission. Heâs worked his way up the ranks to be the Ensherenâs top general now.â
Avery drew two more lines. âThis one is me. And then Lisette is the youngest. She was raised expecting to be married as part of a treaty, although we didnât know it would be with Alham until the last couple of years. Sheâs ready to play her ambassador role. Donât worry. Sheâll be good at it.â
Solon pushed Averyâs hand back to the line for himself. âAnd what do you do? You didnât say.â
ââŚNotâŚnot much of anything,â Avery said. âBy the time I was old enough to realize I needed to find something, my brothers already had things handled.â He shrugged. âRight now, Iâm here to help Lisette get her bearings. Thatâs all.â
Solon watched him silently for a moment. Averyâs face went pink again, and he set the pen down. âEnsheren doesnât need more royalty getting involved in things, and being given a job Iâm not qualified to do would only cause more problems.â
Solon frowned, and Avery hated it. He knew he was useless. He knew he wasnât contributing anything to his country the way royalty was supposed to. He wasnât stupid. He knew that six princes was at least two too many, and while everyone had forgiven him for not having anything to prepare for in the future as a child, and heâd managed to put it off a few more years at university, every day since heâd turned twenty-five, more and more whispers had churned, wondering what his purpose was.
âI see,â Solon said finally. âThank you. This will be helpful. Now, you should get some sleep. Iâll wake you up when our siblings come up for air, or when your rooms are ready. Whichever comes first.â
Avery took a slow breath to calm the frustration that had been building in his chest. Sleep. In Solonâs bed. But at least it would be in another room. âThank you.â
Solon tilted his head. âThereâre pillows on the couch over there. Do you want a blanket?â
Avery jolted in place. âNo! No, thatâs fine. Thank you.â
He turned away before Solon could read anything on his face and realize Avery had been thinking about Solonâs bed. Avery crossed the room to the couch and lay down, facing resolutely away from Solon.
He closed his eyes, took several slow breaths, and tried not wonder what Solonâs bed looked like.
~~~~~~~~
Solon woke Avery after true dark had fallen with a hand to his shoulder. Avery usually started awake when someone shook him, but this felt more like shifting awake on the boat, gentle and dizzying.
He blinked up at Solon in the dim lamplight, shaking himself to remind himself where he was. âWhaâ izzit?â he asked, and immediately clamped his mouth shut. If he couldnât speak properly, he shouldnât be talking at all.
Solon laughed. âYour room is ready for you, and your sister and my brother will be joining me for dinner soon. I thought you might want to change before they get here. Youâre coming?â
Right. Avery was in borrowed clothing. âI shouldâŚdefinitely wear somethingâŚmore presentable.â Even if Solon had seen him smelling and looking like a beached fish, the crown prince didnât have to. And he was the one Avery should be focusing on, not Solon.
And what would Lisette have to say if Avery showed up to dinner looking rumpled and dressed in clothes that werenât his?
âŚHe definitely needed to change.
âIâd like to get ready,â he managed.
âOf course.â Solon helped him to his feet with a warm hand, soft except for the small finger callouses Avery was used to on artists. âIâll show you your rooms. You can make it back here on your own, do you think, or would you like me to wait for you?â
Avery shrugged, and trailed quietly after Solon through the halls. Solon hummed something quietly to himself, but didnât interrupt Averyâs contemplation of the palace walls now that he was awake enough to take it in properly.
The windows were wide and bright, the courtyards huge and full of gardens and not soldiers, and the walls hung with sculptures and paintings.
It felt safe. It would be a good place for Lisette to live. An unworried home without any need to be on guard constantly. Ensheren hadnât seen a war in the last four decades, but the castle theyâd been born into and all the ones theyâd traveled between were still built with the lingering need to barricade in mind.
Solonâs home seemed more like a public showcase. Like it was designed to welcome people, like it belonged to the people, the way Solonâs job did.
Solon waved Avery into a series of small roomsâa bedroom, a small sitting room with a desk as if Avery had any guests to greet in Alham, and an attached washroom. Not lavish, butâit would do.
âItâs only two hallways,â Avery said. âI think I can make it back.â
Solon smiled. âThen Iâll see you shortly.â
Solon left him alone with a wave, and Avery dug through his wardrobe, pleased to find everything already unpacked and hung up for him. Avery didnât normally fuss about his clothes, but normally he wasnât meeting his sisterâs husband.
Or trying to change someoneâs horrible first impression of him. Avery was the useless prince of Ensheren, but he was still a prince. He could impress if he tried.
Hopefully.
He threw the borrowedâgiftedâclothes onto his bed and swapped it out for his best pants, woven in a tight herringbone than shifted between gray and crimson, buttoned a gold shirt over it with dark brown buttons that matched his eyes, and wrapped it in place with a burgundy vest. Not the royal colors of Ensheren anymore than they were Alhamâsâbut they were Averyâs best colors, and he wanted to look nice. He rummaged through the wardrobe until he found his dark red coat and slid it on before brushing his hair out of the sleep mussed disaster and washed his face.
And then it was time to face Solon again.
Avery knocked at Solonâs door before opening it, and all three people in the room turned to him with a bright, âAvery!â
Avery froze at the sound of his name in unison from so many voices, then held up his hand to wave slightly, and drop it.
âUm. Hello.â
Solon smiled warmly, and Avery tore his eyes away from studying his face, hoping for surprise or at least approval, to meet his sisterâs gaze. Sheâd gotten a bath and her hair curled down her back in loose waves over her nicest, newest dress.
She wanted to look nice for her husband. Good. That meant she liked him.
âLisette,â he said. âYouâreââ He stopped himself, then restarted, âYou look nice.â
âSo do you,â she said, eying him skeptically. âYou put in effort.â
She still had one arm looped through her husbandâs. It was easy to see that Solon was his brother, now that Avery had seen them both. They had the same dark hair fighting a wave, the same bright blue eyes, the same tall, slender build. Neither Solon nor Kavi was built to be a fighter like Lennox was, but neither was Avery. âShould I not want to make a good impression on your husband? I thought it would be good to at least try.â
The crown prince laughed and reached a hand out to shake Averyâs. âIâve heard a lot about you.â
Avery ducked his head into a bow before shaking his hand. âYour Highness.â
âKavi. My name is Kavi. And yours is Avery.â
âKavi,â Avery agreed. âIâm glad to see my sister seems so eager to impress you.â
âAvery!â Lisette said, turning pink the same way he did.
âWhat? It means that you still like him as much as you did from the letters.â
Kavi laughed, a deep, warm sound that dragged another smile out of Avery. He was kind. He was friendly. And he kept turning toward Lisette like a magnet.
All good signs.
âLetâs eat,â Solon said, pulling the warming covers off the serving trays.
Kavi pulled a chair out for Lisette, then took the seat next to her. Avery took the seat next to Solon more gingerly than necessary and folded his hands in his lap, uncertain what pre-dinner rituals Alham observed.
Apparently, none, because Kavi started scooping noodles onto his plate as soon as Avery slid his chair closer to the table, and Solon stirred a pot of potatoes in some red-yellow glaze that was tangy enough to make Averyâs mouth water from across the table.
He took several thick pieces of bread, still warm, and buttered them, and slowly filled the rest of the plate with food. But he waited for Solon to take his first bite before he started eating.
Solon nudged Averyâs arm before he could get more than two bites into the lovely, warm duck and offered him a ladle filled with the sauced potatoes. âYou should try these. Theyâre my favorite.â
âIf you donât like them, tell me and Iâll smack Solon for you,â Kavi said. âI asked for our chef to come up with something close to Ensherenâs food for you. I thought it would be good to acclimate you slowly. She even got a recipe book. But Solon cannot go a day without those damn potatoes.â Solon jerked under the table like heâd been kicked, and Kavi grinned at his brother.
âThey taste good,â Solon said, sounding petulant and everything he hadnât been the entire day while Avery collapsed on him. Lisette giggled into her bread and Avery couldnât help a grin crawling onto his face.
âThat does explain why you have peppered duck,â Lisette told her husband. âYou remembered?â
Kavi turned to her with a smile that softened like butter over the bread Avery was busy shoveling into his mouth. âI would have double checked before asking our chef if I hadnât.â
Averyâs chest warmed. Kavi and Lisette had been exchanging letters constantly for nearly two years already. They knew each other, even if theyâd only met in person for the first time that day. He didnât need to worry. Lisette knew what she was getting into far better than Avery did. She would be fine.
âYouâre getting along well.â
Lisette pinked. âWeâve had a good day.â
âAnd I look forward to the next ones,â Kavi said, reaching over a tray of dumplings to touch her hand.
She smiled at him. âSo do I.â
Avery fell quiet as he finished eating, eyes on his plate instead of his sister. She would be fine. Alham would be a good home. Kavi would be a good husband. Every single one of their brothers had insisted he accompany her, and even their mother had pulled Avery aside to give him her best guilt trip over his hesitance.
Maybe that would be for the best for Lisette. She didnât need anyone to intervene.
He let Lisette and Kaviâs gentle flirting and Kavi teasing his brother wash over him without feeling the need to add anything. They were all content with each other, and he was content to know that.
Except that Kavi and Lisette and Solon all kept glancing at him, waiting for him to say something, and continuing with awkward pauses when he didnât add anything. And by the time Avery had cleared his plate, Lisette had, clearly, gotten fed up with it. âAvery,â she said, âKavi wants to know who my family is, too. And youâre the only one heâs getting the chance to before the wedding, and that isnât for months. Will you please act like yourself?â
Avery startled in his chair. âWhat?â
âI miss the brother who used to sneak out of the castle with me and help me climb apple trees and bought me all the books our parents thought I shouldnât be reading and taught me how to waltz after curfew.â
Avery blinked. âBut Max did all of that.â
âMax did all of that with you. Youâre the one that did all of that with me.â
Avery laughed. He couldnât help it. âMax did not teach me how to waltz, Lisette.â
âHe didnât teach me either! Avery, I spent so much time telling Kavi about you. I want him to actually meet you. Stop being so quiet.â
âI was quiet at home, too,â Avery said, trying to bite back another laugh. âIâm tired. Give me a day or two.â
She leaned across the table to stare him down. âIf youâre not acting like yourself in the week, Iâm going to chase you around the courtyard with a stick.â
Averyâs helpless laughter was drowned out that time by Kaviâs, and Averyâs eyes darted to him again. He grinned at Averyânot worried about what Lisette had said, thenâand stood up. âI think thatâs a good reminder to all of us to get some sleep. Perhaps when youâve gotten a chance to settle in here, Lisette wonât have to threaten you anymore.â He turned to his wife. âLet me escort you back to your rooms. Theyâre attached to mine if you need anything.â He winked. âAlthough with any luck, Iâll have wooed you into sharing my bed by our wedding.â
Solon made a disgusted sound from the back of his throat. âKavi! Donât be so crass. Her brother doesnât want to hear that.â
Kavi stuck his tongue out at his brother. âThat wasnât crass, Solon. I was expressing interest. I kow explaining that to you is like trying to tell a fish about the desert, but itâs not inappropriate.â
Solon flushed red. âIâm not that bad.â
âAnd neither am I. Now Iâm going to take my wife and settle in for the night. Good night, Solon.â He inclined his head to Avery. âIt was good to meet you, Avery. I hope weâll get some more time together once youâve settled in here better.â
He escorted Lisette out the door, and Avery turned to Solon. âThank you for your hospitality today. ItâŚitâs been more than I could have expected.â
Solon raised an eyebrow as Avery straightened. âAnd whyâs that?â
âWell IâIâm an uninvited guest. And yetââ
Solon gave him a smile, warm and bright, and it made Averyâs stomach flip over itself in a dangerous way. âIâve been happy to help, donât worry.â
âRight,â Avery said, which he was distantly aware wasnât the right thing to say. He backed up towards the open door. âIâll let you attend to your bed, then.â
He darted out the door before his face could turn red again and before he had to think about Solon and beds again.
~~~~~~~~
âAvery! I was wondering where youâd gone. You didnât answer when I tried your door earlier.â
Avery straightened from where he was bent inspecting the palace gardenâs flowers. âSolon! Iâm sorry. I didnât realize youâd be looking for me.â
Solon grinned. âIf nothing else, I am expected to play host to royal visitors. And youâre the only one here that isnât married to my brother.â He waved an arm back the way he came. âSo let me do my job and show you around Alhamâs capital.â
It wasnât as if Avery had any reason to say no. And with the way Solon was smiling, he didnât want to, either. So he smiled back, nodded, and let Solon lead him out of the palace and into the streets.
With no guards, at least none visible. Solon was dressed in the same unassuming clothing that had Avery mistake him for an attendant instead of a king, and no crown was in sight, but Avery still felt strange as they left the palace grounds, like someone had forgotten to give him a jacket in the winter. Like a weight was missing.
âToday we can go on foot,â Solon said. âWe canât reach everywhere in the city that way, but thereâs plenty to see in walking distance.â
Avery nodded and stepped closer to him when a carriage passed by on the street, driving straight past the palace gates. Solon took the opportunity to lean in and whisper conspiratorially, âTo be honest, most of my favorite places arenât close, but maybe Kavi had a point in acclimating you slowly.â
Avery laughed and Solon grinned back like he was surprised to hear it.
âWell, what fun are you taking us to today?â
âI was going to start with the high street shops. Not that Iâm trying to drum up the local economy, although parliament would probably like me to. But itâs also where the mostâŚpoliteâŚstreet performers gather and itâs a good place to see everyone from all parts of the city head to shop. Unless youâd rather do something else? I could do my best to keep you off kilter so your sister chases you around with a stick.â
Avery shoved at Solonâs shoulder without thinking about it, the same way he would have any of his brothers. Solon didnât budge, and Avery drew his hand back like heâd burned it. âIâIâm sorry.â
Solon caught his wrist before Avery could withdraw completely. âAvery, the treaties between our countries are already signed and Iâm not going to take Kaviâs wife away from him.â Heâd pitched his voice low and soft like he was talking to a skittish cat, and Avery felt tension melt from his face and shoulders embarrassingly quickly. âYou donât have to worry about offending me. It wonât cause any harm if you do, and I wonât hold it against you, either. Weâre both getting to know each other. Are you going to do anything against Alham because I didnât know who you were when we met?â
Avery blinked. âBut you didnât do anything.â
âI thought you were one of Lisetteâs attendants trying to get out of work.â
âSo? I thought you were your brotherâs.â
Solon laughed. âSee? Weâre even. Weâve both done things that could have offended each other, and neither of us are mad. Right?â
Avery glanced sideways at him for a moment. âAll right. You have a point.â
âSo youâll stop trying to be so careful?â
Avery lifted one shoulder. âI think youâll be disappointed in how I act when Iâm relaxed. Lisette made me sound much more adventurous than I am.â
âThatâs okay. Weâre starting small today. We can work our way out into the city as far as youâre willing to push yourself. Or until you start kicking me.â
Avery ducked his head and then smiled. âIs that always how Kavi gets you to leave him alone?â
 Solon pressed a finger to Averyâs mouth. âDonât go telling everyone his secrets.â
Averyâs breath caught until Solon dropped his hand away from Averyâs mouth again, and he pressed his lips together to imprint the feeling on them.
And so he didnât say anything stupid.
~~~~~~~~
It was apparent by the time the week was outâand Lisetteâs deadline had comeâthat Solon had every intention of taking Avery somewhere in the capital city every single day. At least until Lisetteâs wedding, which was only five weeks away.
It was more attention than Avery was used to. More attention than he knew what to do with. But two weeks into his stay, he managed to hide away with Lisette for one of her dress fittings.
âWell, youâre having fun with Solon, arenât you?â Lisette asked. âRight?â
Avery narrowed his eyes at her, trying to figure out if she was trying to imply anything. He and Solon had done nothing remotely scandalous. The fact that Solonâs smile and presence was enough to flip Averyâs heart over in his chest wasnât the point. But his sister could tell. She always knew when he she saw him with someone heâd gotten a crush on.
âIâm enjoying myself here,â Avery agreed before immediately changing the subject away from Solon. âMore importantly, are you? Because one of us is staying here after the wedding, and one of us is going home with our parents and brothers. Has Kavi been showing you around?â
Lisette huffed. âWeâve been busy.â
âBusy with each other, or busy with the wedding? Becauseââ
âOh, just because Iâm not in charge of all of the details doesnât mean Iâm not involved in my own wedding, Avery! Itâs in a month and I only just got here and I donât know anyone yet andââ
Avery clamped his mouth shut as his sister ran out of steam. She was stressedâof course she was; she was trying to build an entirely new life somewhere sheâd never been, and Avery had decided she was fine and spent his days entirely occupied with Solon and his ginger cologne thatâno, Avery did not need to find someone to bring back to Ensheren. âWhat can I do to help?â
âAveryââ
âThatâs what Iâm here for, isnât it? Our brothers were pretty clear about that. I want to help you if I can, Lisette. Please.â
She rolled her eyes at him, but she smiled while she did it. âSo youâre only helping me because they asked you to? Not because you think I need help?â
âYour Highness,â the dressmaker said, kneeling at her waist, âI appreciate your spirit, but if you could have this conversation more sedately at least while Iâm trying to pin things in place.â
Lisette went red up to her hairline. âIâm sorry. I havenât had this done in a while.â
âYou had this done two months ago to get that dress you wanted when you saw Kavi for the first time,â Avery said.
His sister scowled at him. âWill you hush?â
âYou wanted me to be like this. Threatened me with a stick,â Avery said. âNow tell me what I can do to help you adjust here.â
Lisetteâs shoulders slumped, but she caught herself before she did anything more to disturb the dressmakerâs work. âI donât know, Avery. I just want some time alone with my husband again to get to know him and this country better.
A clap came from the door. âDone.â
Both Lisette and Avery jumped and turned to look at Solon leaning against the door frame. The dressmaker sighed and stood up to take a break and fetch something from his work kit.
âSolon!â Lisette said. âWhat are you doing here?â
âI was looking for your brother. But if what you need is a day alone with my brother and this city, I can make that happen easily. The wedding details can manage a day without you. In fact, maybe even getting out of the city would be good. Our mother lives out of the city on a large estate near the woods. Would you like to visit her? Itâs quiet and private there, but maybe meeting your husbandâs mother wouldnât help.â
Lisette blinked. âYour mother is still alive?â
Solon frowned. âIâm only thirty-one. My fatherâs death five years ago was very shocking, but it didnât put my mother in any poorer health. Sheâs still quite young. She just wasnât chosen as the next monarch.â
Thirty-one. When Solon had been Averyâs age, heâd taken up a crown. And Avery wasnât even able to help his sister relax.
Lisetteâs mouth opened into a soft circle. âKavi gave me a brief explanation of how the lineage works here, but I didnât realize your mother was still alive. Will she be coming to the wedding?â
âOf course. In the meantime, however, what would you like to do to squirrel away some alone time with my brother? Iâm happy to do whatever I need to make it happen.â
Lisette hesitated, and the dressmaker attacked her waist with pins while she stood thoughtful and still.
âI think,â she said, âI would like to meet your mother before the wedding. Would sheâŚwhatâs sheâs like?â
âCheerful, no nonsense, and very pleased Kavi found someone he likes so much,â Solon said. âI canât promise she wonât have any questions for you, but I think sheâll be quite welcomingâand even if she gives you a proper interrogation, itâll certainly be a distraction. I can pack you and Kavi off before nightfall and youâll be there before morning.â
Avery nodded enthusiastically. âJust give me a list of things to handle while youâre gone, Lisette. I can at least do that much for you.â
âIâŚare you sure?â Lisette asked, pausing with a frown.
âDo you think I wonât do it properly?â Avery asked. âItâs for you, Lisette. Iâll do my best.â
Lisette laughed. âIt has nothing to do with that at all, Avery. It just seems strange to let you handle things here while I go somewhere without you.â
Avery stood up, and sidestepped the dressmaker to take his sisterâs hands. âThatâs what this entire trip is meant to be. Go spend time with your husband. Iâve got this.â
~~~~~~~~
Avery did not have things. His sister left for a week see Kavi and Solonâs mother, leaving Avery with a list as long as his forearm to see to. And he only knew how to do one of themâchecking the translation of the wedding program for the foreign guests. But heâd asked after that first. It wasnât ready to be looked at yet.
And so he gave up his borrowed desk in his borrowed rooms and took the list to Solonâs room, hoping to plead help from him yet again.
Solon answered the door with a surprised smile and welcomed him inside immediately.
âDo you need something?â
âIâm sorry. I know we agreed that you wouldnât need to host me this week while I took care of Lisetteâs things, but I was hoping you could at least direct me to who I need to talk to. Lisette has been handling all of this alone.â
While Solon took him sight-seeing and showed off his favorite statues and museums and strange buildings, and they laughed at things for hours. But Solon knew that.
Solon waved that off. âIt was starting to get boring without you around anyway.â He gestured to his desk. âIâve actually had to get work done.â
Avery couldnât help a smile at that. âAs far as I can tell, Lisette is working on blending marriage traditions, but I donât know if you have anyone besides the two of us whoâs familiar with the traditions in Ensheren, or who I should speak to about implementing them.â
Solon snagged the list Lisette made out of Averyâs hands and spent a few quiet moments reading it. Avery let him and glanced around the room. It looked about the same as every other time heâd been in Solonâs rooms, except that his desk looked like it was being rapidly devoured by papers. And Solon looked the same, except that his hair had definitely had hands running through it, because the waves had gotten untamed and curled up at every angle.
Avery did his best not to stare as Solon read and then handed the list back to him. âNone of this should be complicated. Either your sister was making things easy for you, or she managed to tie herself up in knots about it from stress. I know the wedding is only in three weeks, but,â Solon stretched his arms wide, âweâre royalty. This wedding is a national holiday, and a sign of goodwill when your family arrives. Everyone is going to do everything possible to make it happen properly on short notice. Honestly, I could give that list to my secretary and it would be done before your sister comes back tomorrow.â
âLisette asked me to do it,â Avery said. âIâd like to see to it myself. I donât doubt your secretary, butâŚâ
Solon nodded once. âOf course. Jan is probably extremely busy as is. Heâs had enough to take care of with both of you here. So.â He reached back to the list and tapped the first item. âWe can take care of several of these things by talking to the priest. I havenât had a chance to show you the temple yet, but we have a nondenominational one in the palace. The priest who will be officiating the service works there, and she can refer us to someone who can help with how you do your vows to ensure we do both.â
âWe?â Avery asked.
âAvery, Iâm very tired of paperwork today. Let me with you, please. Anything to get moving.â
Avery laughed. âWell, I canât say no to the king.â
âYouâve said no to me three times in the last week,â Solon said, slinging an arm around Averyâs shoulders to steer him back out the door.
~~~~~~~~
Working out wedding details with Solon was much more nerve wracking that it had any right to be. It wasnât his wedding. But seeing Solon smile at him in the largest chapel Avery had ever seen near the altar while Avery repeated the same steps his sister would make to arrive before the priest and demonstrate taking Solonâs hands as she would Kaviâs, and then teaching the priest how to tie their hands together with his sisterâs sash wasâ
Well. Averyâs heart certainly got more of a workout than he would have if heâd gone sprinting for the same amount of time.
Fortunately, he didnât have to dance with Solon to set up room for the family dances Ensheren enjoyed to celebrate the unions. He didnât have to touch Solon while going over the most important menu items with their cook. And he didnât even have to make eye contact while sorting out who would be kneeling, who would be standing, and when.
They broke from the palace again to hurry over to see the priest from Ensheren. Alhamâs capital had a small immigrant population and traveling communityâit would get larger now that Lisette was married to Kaviâenough, at least to have a small district devoted to them and their own cultural buildings.
âI canât believe this place existed in your city and didnât take me here first,â Avery said as they settled into a carriage to head across the city. âWhat was that about trying to give me time to adjust slowly?â
âItâs not adjusting if you just insulate yourselves with your people, is it?â Solon asked. âBesides, it takes forever to get there. Do you think theyâll recognize you?â
âMaybe. If theyâve been home recently.â
âMmm. So youâve been at more of your official events than you like to pretend.â
âWell, I attend them,â Avery said. âI donât do much more than that.â
âMhm. Iâm sure.â
Avery kicked at Solonâs shin lightly and then turned red at the familiarity. Kavi did that. But Kavi was Solonâs brother. Avery just wanted the excuse to touch him.
âHey!â Solon said, breaking into laughter. âWhat was that for?â
âDonât sound so skeptical. Youâll see when my family gets here. Theyâll take over all the final details without me having to do anything.â
âAnd yet Lisette wants you next to her at the altar, not any of them.â
âWell, she only gets one,â Avery said, avoiding Solonâs eyes. âAnd I donât have another role to perform.â
âI donât think Max is her favorite brother,â Solon said. âThatâs all.â
âSheâs not even the one who asked me to come. The rest of our family sent me with her. They were very pushy about it.â
Solon sat up straighter in his seat. âOh. I didnât realize that.â
Avery shrugged. He didnât like thinking about it. Lisette hadnât picked him, and the rest of his family wanted him out of their way for weeks. It made sense, but it still stung. Avery had always done his best, if not to help, at least not cause problems for anyone.
He thought he was still succeeding. Solon liked him, at least. If he and Kavi hadnât both made it so clear that Solon never thought about romance, he would have even called it flirting. But a friendship with a king was no small thing.
Except when his sister was married to the crown prince of the same country. Then, a friendship didnât matter. And neither did Averyâs crush on him.
~~~~~~~~
The night before Avery and Lisetteâs parents and brothers arrived for the wedding, Alham held a celebration. It would last into the next days, to greet their new allies. It would last at least a week, even with the wedding festivities shortly after.
But the night before they arrived, they heralded the start of the holidays with fireworks.
Solon took Avery out of the palace to watch. He settled them on a patch of grass in a park heâd taken Avery to the first week heâd been there, high on the far edge of the city, with a view of the entire sprawl of buildings beneath them. Plenty of people had joined them to watch the show in the sky over the harbor, setting out blankets and picnic baskets.
âWhat about Kavi and Lisette?â Avery asked as he settled into one of the same blankets heâd borrowed his first day in Alham to sleep on Solonâs couch. He was wearing the same gold shirt he been given then under his favorite red coat, too.
âKavi is almost certainly going to take Lisette to the top towers in the palace to watch,â Solon said, unpacking the bag of snacks heâd brought with them. âItâs more private and closer to the fireworks. He likes it better. I think itâs more comfortable to watch fireworks up here.â
Avery hummed. He had to agree. Watching in the palace seemed fancy. Exclusive. But he was with everyone else in Alham who wanted to be there, with Solon at his side, and he could imagine Max wandering around making friends with everyone. Avery couldnât manage that sociableness, but he liked the idea of it.
It felt like where Avery belonged.
Lisette would like the privacy, though. Sheâd never gotten much, as the only princess of Ensheren. Avery could blend in better among their brothers.
âIs Kavi nervous?â he asked. âLisette is torn between nervous and excited. But like you said, everythingâs already official. This is just the party to celebrate it.â
âYou know, I actually donât think he is,â Solon said, settling onto the blanket next to Avery and folding his legs so he could rest his arms on his knees. âBut heâs never been the type for nerves.â
âLucky him.â
Solon laughed much louder than Averyâs muttered aside deserved. âI know. Iâve always been jealous. He would have been better at being king than I was, but that wasnât how the votes went.â
âThey get to design your job to your strengths, donât they?â Avery said. âYours were what they wanted, not Kaviâs.â
Solon raised an eyebrow and gave Avery the same once over he had when they first met. Avery felt his cheeks go as pink as they did the first day, too, but the sky was almost dark enough that he could believe Solon didnât see it this time. âAnd what are my strengths, Avery? Why would they pick me over Kavi?â
Avery went redder, and this time he knew Solon saw it because his grin widened. âYouâŚyouâre thoughtful. You know everything about this city, at least, and you can tell me anything about your country any time I have a question about anything. You know how to solve problems, more neatly than I ever would. You know exactly who to ask for help and how. Who wouldnât want you to be in charge?â
Solonâs mouth fell open and for a brief moment, he was visibly speechless. Then he looked away, swallowed, and recovered enough to say, âThank you. Thatâs quite the compliment.â
Before Avery had to think of something else to say to that, the first explosion overhead broke. He turned in unison with Solon and every other person in the park with them toward the sparks of light breaking up the dark sky over the harbor.
Avery had always liked fireworks. Heâd though of them as pretty things as a kid, like the paintings on his wall, but when heâd asked how to make them, the chemistry of it had overwhelmed him until heâd given up understanding.
They were magic. Made by talented, clever people with a purpose. And the purpose was to make people happy.
Solon edged closer as the show went on and the air cooled. Avery tightened his jacket around him and leaned closer to Solonâs warm skin.
And he stayed there after the last firework went off and those around them started to pack up and leave, his eyes on the sky. Until Solon shifted close enough to jostle Averyâs shoulder and Avery turned with an apology in his throat for waiting too long after the fireworks were done to help pack things up and leave.
But Solon wasnât trying to pack up their blankets. He was staring at Avery, his eyes unreadable in the dark, his mouth soft and open.
Averyâs eyes drifted to the shadows playing on Solonâs face from the few lamps in their park that had slowly started being relit now that the fireworks were over. Drifted down to his mouth and stared at it, listing forward the way he had the first day they met and he was unstable and ill and Solon was the only thing keeping him upright.
âAvery,â Solon said, his voice soft, and Avery jolted upright, shaking himself. Heâd been about to kiss Solon. Solon, who wasnât interested in any of that. Solon, who was absolutely not an option for any of a hundred other reasonsâstarting with the fact that their siblings were married and there was no point. If Solon was going to get married, it would have to be to someone useful.
Solon startled himself as Avery set into action and stood, and he slowly started packing their things up as if heâd just woken from a dream.
Or a nightmare.
Avery avoided Solon the next morning. And the next afternoon. And it was easy to do it at first, with the chaos of preparing for far more royal guests than Lisette or Avery themselves represented. Avery managed to keep well out of his way all the way up until it was time to have dinner with his parents and brothers, and Lisette, Kavi, and Solon, and Solonâs mother.
Solon caught him on the way to the proper dining hallâSolonâs room wouldnât fit so many people for dinnerâand stopped him with a hand to his arm. âAvery! I expected to see you around today. Where have you been?â
âIâve been around,â Avery said, looking away immediately. âItâs easy not to notice when thereâs so many of us.â
âExcept that I was looking for you, specifically, not a prince from Ensheren,â Solon said. âAnd youâve not been around at all. Are you avoiding your family?â
âWhat? No, nothing like that.â
âThen what happened?â
âI just think too much has been happening,â Avery said. âThereâve been so many people to help adjust.â
There was a pained sound to their side, and Avery and Solon both turned to see Kavi with Lisette on his arm further down the hallway. Kavi dropped Lisetteâs arm and stepped forward, grabbing Averyâs hand with his arm.
âAvery,â he said, âmy brother is bad at this. He has no practice, because heâs never wanted to do this before. But he is trying to find out if you want to stay here in Alham. Heâs spent the last six weeks trying to convince you to stay, hoping youâd fall in love with the country, so he could keep you around.â
Solonâs face turned redder with every word from his brother. But he didnât argue or protest any of it.
âWill youâplease, Avery, just put my brother out of his misery and tell him if youâre going to stay or not. Before dinner, please. I canât imagine having to sit through an entire meal with the two of you so awkward around each other.â
Lisette tugged on her husbandâs arm. âWe should leave them be,â she said. âAvery, donât come to dinner until youâre done talking to Solon about this. Please.â
âLiseââ
But she didnât stop, and she and Kavi had turned the corner before Avery could even finish her name, leaving him alone again with Solon.
Avery turned back to Solon, unsure what to say after that. âUm.â
âIâuh.â
They stared at each other in awkward silence for a long moment before Solon finally broke it again. âSo? Are you willing to stay? Here? Even after your parents leave?â
âYouâŚyou really want me to?â
Solon grabbed for Averyâs hands and took them in both of his. âAvery. Iâve liked you from the moment I met you. I didnât even know I could like someone the way I like you. But youâre not useless, and youâre not unwanted. You care. You want to know everything about everyone, and you want to do your best to help. Maybeâmaybe starting over somewhere without the expectations and your siblings taking care of so much will make it easier for you to find something to do here. Youâve always wanted to date men, havenât you? Spend your life with one? And your parents and siblings all pushed you to come here, where thatâsâŚ.where you can do that. They like you, Averyâyouâve never once said you donât get along with them. And they wanted you to come here, where they wouldnât be hanging over your head andâand maybe you could marry someone if you wanted.â
Avery blinked, then looked down at their hands. âYou really think thatâs what they were trying to do?â
âSo much so that I asked Lisette about it, and she turned pink the same way you do when you get caught. She asked if I was trying to keep you.â
Avery ducked his head against a growing smile. He could see Lisette asking that. Could see her hoping for that. âIf youâve wanted me to fall in love with Alham, youâve succeeded. And ifâŚ.if you wanted me to fall in love with you, thenâŚwellâŚitâs still early. But I think youâre succeeding there, too.â
Solonâs face brightened like the sun and his smile could have cracked his face in half. âSo youâll stay?â
âIâll have to talk to my parents about it,â Avery said, worming his hands out of Solonâs to rest them on his shoulders. âBut if youâre right, I think theyâll be happy for me to stay here. Especially if we have a treaty and theyâll have someone to take care of Lisette.â
âAnd Lisette can take care of you,â Solon said, tucking his hands around Averyâs waist.
âMmm,â Avery agreed, a grin growing across his face. âNow if you want me to stay, Your Majesty, perhaps you should start proving it with a kiss?â
Solonâs hands tightened as he jolted in surprise, and he met Avery halfway.
life as a hit man was dirty but simple, and gojo preferred keeping it that way. he didnât know his clients names, they didnât know his. heâd send over proof of his work, theyâd wire in the money. dirty, yet simple.
so when he gets a message to kill the daughter of some oil tycoon, he doesnât think much about it. sure he thinks itâs cheap to go for the kid, but what does he know. this is the most heâs ever been offered for a one shot job, so heâs not an idiot to turn this offer down.
and unfortunately, that meant his next confirmed target was you.
he gets your information, where you go to school, what apartment building you live in, where you like to eat. usually he prefers a straight shot to the head, but sometimes sneaking in something to your food lets him off easier.
gojo gets to know your routine. what you do at what time. what shows you watch, what your favorite sweater is. he watches from the high rises that faces yours, crouching down so none of your bodyguards could see the reflection of the magnifier of his rifle.
and gojo is used to taking out a wide range of people. men, women, grandpas, aunts. itâs just business to him. but thereâs something about you that makes him hesitate to pull the trigger.
maybe itâs the fact that the weeks heâs spent trailing after you heâs noticed youâre pretty much a loner. you keep to yourself, never bothering anyone. you donât seem to have my friends in your classes, or even out of them. gojo never questions to morals of his clients or who they ask him to kill, but judging you so far you seem to have doneâŚnothing wrong.
you treat the old lady who works in the convenience story with such kindness that gojo wonders if you were born into this level of wealth, because most people of your status treat those beneath them like ants. you always hold the door open for your body guards despite them insisting they do it for you. you always buy some food for the stray cats in the alley you pass, and you never yell when youâre on the phone with your dad, even though gojo tracks those calls and feels the need to yell for you.
it all comes to a moment when youâre at your favorite coffee shop (he knows this because you come here so often), and youâve managed to weasel away from your bodyguards. he knows they must be freaking out by now, but you just want some alone time.
heâs right there, right behind you, the little pouch of his condition of drugs that instantly kill in his pocket ready, and you turn around with your coffee cup and bump into him.
your eyes seen, letting out a shocked gasp as the iced drink stains his shirt and pants, the cup not empty on the floor.
âoh my god, oh my god,â you stutter out, scrambling to find some napkins, âiâm so so sorry! i didnât even see you there - gosh,â you shove some napkins into his hands, trying to dapple the coffee away but it does nothing to help, âi canât believeâŚ!â you trail off, the two of you moving out of line so you donât hold the others up and your shaking your head in dismay, mad at your clumsiness.
âitâs alright,â he assures you, waving it off as his eyes take in your appearance. âdonât even worry about it, accidents happen.â itâs the first time heâs seen you this close, and he feels that pouch growing heavier in his pocket.
because youâre pretty. really pretty. and he likes the plush of your cheeks, the scrunch of your brows, the way youâre nearly gnawing your lip raw. you seem even prettier in person, and thereâs a lump forming in his chest, something heâs never felt before.
âno, no,â you murmur, trying to find the tide pen in your bag, only to realize you left it at home, âand itâs stained too, fuck. i am so sorry about this, you probably have somewhere to be andâŚâ your words trail off as you scramble for your wallet, pulling out some cash as you push it into his hands.
itâs more than he needs to replace the shirt and pants, probably enough to buy him a couple pairs from ralph lauren, but you still seem to think itâs not enough as you look for more.
âitâs no worries at all, i keep an extra of shirts in my car for emergencies like this,â gojo lies smoothly and you look up from your purse, eyes wide in shame. fuck he really likes your eyes too.
âno, please take it, itâll be on my mind all day if you donât,â you insist, but heâs shaking his head defiantly, a reassuring smile on his face as he hands the money back to you.
âand itâll be on my conscience all day if i take it,â he promises you, and after you realize heâs not going to retract his hands you take the cash, shoving it back into your wallet as heat settles all over your body.
of course with your luck you spill coffee all over the most attractive man youâve ever met.
you still look worried, finding another napkin as you take out a pen from your purse, messily writing something down.
âthis is my contact information if you ever need me to replace your clothes,â you hand it over to the man with an apologetic smile, âplease donât hesitate to call me, i know stains and thatâs gonna be really hard to get out,â you go to say something else but your eyes dart to the large windows behaubd him, catching sight of your body guards who seem to have seen you, and your face falls.
âiâm really sorry, again, but i have to go,â you mutter as you speed off, waving goodbyes to the stranger as you duck your head down and leave the coffee shop, not wanting to cause another scene as three buff men race in to find you.
gojo stands there almost in a haze, looking at his stained white shirt to the napkin with your number and name on it.
almost as if he didnât already know it, almost as if you werenât the girl heâs supposed to kill.
and in that moment he realizes how screwed he is, because heâd rather down that packet right there than shoot you down, and heâs never felt this dread before.
Family Dinners - dpxdc
"Holy shit, you're Bruce Wayne!" Danny gaped, jabbing a finger at the man sitting at the head of the table.
The bustling dining room goes silent as everyone turns to look at him.
"Danny, who did you think was going to be here?" Tim asks, disbelief plain in his voice and Danny feels his face flush red.
"Sorry, I, uh, I guess I just never put it together. Tim Drake-Wayne. Wayne Manor. It, uh, makes sense now." He laughs sheepishly and scrubs at his neck before slumping back down into his chair.
"Well," Tim says with an indulgent sigh, "at least I know you're not just friends with me for my connections."
"Yeah, I'm really sorry, I just never thought about it, I guess."
Danny sinks lower as everyone around him laughs. Come to dinner, he said, the food is the best, he said, ignore the family, he said. Danny really wishes he'd listened to Tim and just ignored themâalmost as much as he's regretting accepting the offer in the first placeâbut... he's having dinner with Batman.
Ancients, that's so weird!
The last time he saw Batman was in the future and, suffice it to say, it was not going well. There hadn't really been time for family dinners there.
Wait. Family dinners?
He peers around the table, openly gawking at everyone as it all clicks into place.
"Everything alright, Danny? Now realising who everyone else is?" Tim asks with a roll of his eyes.
"Uh... something like that..." Danny mumbles as everyone laughs again.
From further down the table, the smallest Wayne scoffs and clicks his tongue.
"I thought you said he was smart, Drake?"
"So, you all do it, too, then?" he asks, ignoring the jibe. Danny's only a little bit jealous as he thinks of how much easier they must have it, how much easier it'd be if his family had been on his side, too. "You all work together?"
"Nah," Dick says from across the table with a brilliant grin. "Tim's the only one that works with Bruce, we all have different jobs. I'm a police officer in Bludhaven."
"Disgusting." Danny blurts out without thinkingâbecause seriously, what kind of self-respecting vigilante would also be a police officer?âbefore clapping a hand over his mouth. "Sorry."
The whole table laughs again, the loudest being the blonde girl a few spaces down from Dick. Look, Danny wasn't really paying attention to names when they were all paraded in front of him. Dick only gets remembered because his name is a joke.
Come on, Danny, recover!
"That's, uh, not what I meant, though."
"Oh?" Dick asks, cocking his head slightly to the side. Is it Danny's imagination or does his smile tense slightly?
"Yeah, I mean like, you know, in costume. It must make it so much easier to have everyone together like this."
"Costume? What do you mean?"
Yeah, Danny's not imagining it, everyone tenses up at that. It's really only now that he's realising that this probably isn't how he should bring up that he knows about their... night time activities. In fact, he probably shouldn't be bringing it up at all.
"Uuhhh..." Danny looks wildly around the table as he continues making his stupid noise. Think, think, think! There must be a way out of this!
"Danny?" Tim asks, looking concerned.
"Oh, Ancients, this isn't how I wanted it to go at all," he mutters, slipping even further into his chair. He's almost on the floor now and he so, so wishes it could just swallow him up.
His real first meeting with Batman was meant to be cool! He had planned to be Phantom, maybe save them from a tight spot, prove his worth as a mysterious and powerful ally as thanks for the help Batman gave him in the future.
"Danny, what are you talking about?" Tim starts tugging on his sleeve in an attempt to pull him back up from his pit of despair.
Eventually, Danny relents and sits up straighter, hiding his face in his hands and whining all the while.
"I'm sorry, I just didn't expect him to be here and it threw me off so now I look stupid and it's so embarrassing!" he wails, flailing his arms wide. "Why wouldn't you warn me that Batman was your adopted dad, Tim? Couldn't you have let me know?"
"I'm sorry, what? Danny are you alright? There's no way Bruce can be Batman, look at him!"
"Yeah," the blonde girl laughs from the bottom of the table, "look at him! That's a wet noodle of a man! Batman can actually do things, B is incapable of pretty much everything."
"Thank you, Stephanie," Bruce sighs, massaging his forehead.
It's... Those are the first words Danny's heard Batman say since everything went down and it's enough to knock him out of his embarrassment.
It's really good to hear his voice again. Especially now, when it's strong and healthy and full of personalityâeven if that personality is little more than a tired father right nowâfar better than how it had been, at the end.
Danny sits up, back straight, and grins. He's got this. He remembers it perfectly. Some people count sheep to fall asleep, Danny repeats his mantra to be certain that he'll never forget it.
"Gamma alpha upsilon tau iota mu epsilon, 42, 63, 28, 1 colon 65 dash 9."
Once again, the whole table falls into silence.
"Holy shit..." breathes the other D name (Duke? Danny's pretty sure he's Signal) from opposite Stephanie. "Isn't that...?"
"The time travelling code." The littlest Wayne says stiffly. "We have met in the future?"
"That's not just the time travelling code, Dami." Dick says, looking between Danny and Bruce. "That's the family time travelling code."
Danny's grin freezes in place.
"I'm sorry, what?"
"1 colon 65 dash 9." Dick explains, still flicking between him and Bruce. "It means you've been adopted into the family and we should all treat you as such, no questions asked."
"Tell you what, I'm about to ask a question." Danny says, dumbstruck. "You just told me it was a code to identify time travellers, not anything about being adopted! What the hell, B?"
Bruce looks about as shellshocked as Danny feels.
"We must have been close," he says finally, after opening and closing his mouth like a fish out of water a few times.
"No! Not that close!" Danny reels back, taking a deep breath ready to refute it all, but... "Well, I mean, you found me when I first got stuck, and you helped me get better despite being... And then we fought together against the, uh, bad guy, before he, um, he... before you couldn't."
An uncomfortable beat passes while they all pick up on what Danny tried so hard not to say.
"So, you're not from the future, then, you travelled there and came back?" Tim asks, breaking the tension and leaning forward with a glint in his eye.
"Yeah, it was a whole end of the world thing, but don't worry about it," Danny says with a hand wave, "It's all kosher now, won't ever happen."
"What did happen?"
"Seriously, don't worry about it, we cool."
"How long in the future was it?"
"About ten years? You were pretty spry for an old man, B," Danny laughs, wishing they'd get off the topic of what happened and get back to the adoption bit.
Everyone shares degrees of a cautious smile as they relax out of the shock, and Dickâwhose grin is the biggestâsays, "No wonder you got the family code, you're already riffing on him like one of us. How long were you there for?"
"A week, before I managed to get back to my present and stop him then."
"A week? Jeez, B, that has to set some kind of record, seriously."
"Oh!" Danny says, sitting bolt upright and blinking in surprise before pointing at Dick and bouncing in his seat. "You're Nightwing!"
"What?"
"That's exactly what Nightwing said when Batman told me the code! Makes so much more sense now."
Dick laughs and claps his hands, delighted.
"You were not formally adopted?" The grumpy small oneâDami?âasks, his face pinched.
"I didn't even know I was informally adopted."
"And your parents? Are they alive or dead?"
"Damian, stopâ"
"They were dead in the future, but they're alive now." Danny says, looking down. He fiddles with the tablecloth, twisting the fabric around his fingers as he fights down the pang of sadness that he always feels when he thinks of them now. He forces a bright smile on his face and hopes it doesnât look too strained. "I just, uh, can't talk to them much, anymore."
"Damian," Dick warns, "1 colon 65 dash 9. Treat them as family, no questions asked."
"This is Damian treating him as family, the little turd has no manners." Tim scoffs, rolling his eyes, but he gently bumps shoulders with Danny to knock him out of his funk. Danny can't help but send him a watery smile.
"I have the most exemplary manners, Drake, unlike some people." Damian spits, crossing his arms with a pout. "I was merely ascertaining his status to see how he could possibly fit into the family."
"I know this is all a bit sudden, Danny," Bruce smiles, ignoring Damian and reaching out to lay a warm hand on his arm, "for all of us. But if I felt strongly enough to give you that code after spending a week with you in the future, then you are more than welcome in this family, if you so choose it. I think I can speak for all of us when I say we'd like to get to know you a bit more."
"I know a threat when I hear it, Bruce." Danny snorts. "But, yeah, I get it. I'm sorry this is all so weird, it really wasn't how I wanted to find you again, but... I'm glad I did."
"So are we, Danny." Dick says, with a warm smile. "And formally or not, 1 colon 65 dash 9 means you're family. Welcome to the fun house! No take backs or refunds, sorry. You're stuck with us."
hi! i have an idea ive been thinking about for a while. spencer and the team (plus reader) are at a bar and reader goes off to get a drink/dance/talk to someone and either a girl or a group of girls come up to spencer and start flirting with him. the first thing she/they ask ofc is "do you have a girlfriend?" and spencer (not realizing they are flirting) is like yes!!! her name is _____ and she is amazing and i love her so much.... and he goes on like a 20 minute rant about reader. reader finally finds him talking to these girls/girl and has to recuse them/her from his ranting about herself and explain what they actually meant.
sorry that was a lot but i wanted to make sure understood what i was envisioning. thank you so much!!!
âSpence, please!â
Spencer kept pulling you closer as he tried to nuzzle his way into your neck and leave a few kisses behind your ear. He wasnât one for PDA, but after a few shots he was puddy in your hands and everyone had to witness what a mess you made of him in this state.
âI just wanna be close to you,â you could feel him pout as his lips were pressed against your neck, his thumbs rubbing over your waist.
âLooks like youâre not getting out of here anytime soon, huh pretty girl?â
Derek chuckled as he took pleasure seeing his younger brother of a coworker finally have a girlfriend, especially with how clingy he was being at the moment. It was as if Spencer would follow you if you were to leave for only a minute, which he had done approximately half an hour ago when you excused yourself to go to the bathroom and somehow he still had enough brainpower to talk about how hand-dryers could actually spread more germs and not remove them. Heâd even taken it upon himself to take some paper towels and dry your hands for you, making sure to even dry the spaces between your fingers.
You had had only one drink and you were not going home unless you had a second one. Spencer had already downed three in that time, and looking at the state that he was in, it was obvious that he wasnât going to get served any more tonight.
âSpence, I'm going to get a quick drink, okay? Stay here.â
Prying his hands off of you, you quickly slipped out of Spencerâs grasp before he managed to put his hands on your waist again.
A few minutes later, Penelope pulls Derek to the dance floor while Emily comes across an old friend and excuses herself to have a word with her, leaving Spencer all by himself at the booth, his tongue sticking out from the side of his mouth while fidgeting with his fingers. He was too deep in thought that he didnât notice a group of girls come over and sit next to him, their intentions clearly not innocent.
âHi! Youâre here all alone?â
âOh, Iâm not! Iâm here with my girlfriend and team mates!â
âI donât see any girlfriend around.â
âShe went to get a drink. Oh, she loves an aperol spritz, sheâs got great taste, in general not just in drinks.â
The girls watched in amazement as Spencer kept talking about every small thing he could come up with about you, from your favorite color and the psychological meaning behind it to your Myers Briggs personality type and how youâre both compatible.
As the endless line at the bar finally came to an end and you managed to get your drink, walking back to the teamâs spot you noticed the unfamiliar girls surrounding Spencer and your stomach churned in nerves. The closer you got however you noticed their bored and confused faces and thatâs all you needed to know that Spencer had most probably pulled his book smarts out on them and left them speechless.
âOh and this one time- Y/N, youâre back!â
Spencer pulled you in for a hug, nearly knocking the drink out of your hands. Managing to put it down on the table, you rested your hand on his back as you turned your attention to the strangers, them clearly on the edges of their seats and ready to bolt at any moment.
âWeâre gonna go, nice to meet you both.â
Your eyes followed them as they quickly got up and made their way to the other side of the bar, even from a distance you could see the red hue on their cheeks, embarrassment written all over their faces.
âSpence, what did they want?â
âThey came over and asked if I had a girlfriend.â
âThatâs it?â
Spencer nodded as he nuzzled into your stomach, âAnd I talked about how great you are and how Iâm going to marry you one day.â
Laughter erupted from your mouth as you heard the answer, also because of Spencerâs fingers practically digging into your sides that it was tickling you.
âSweetie, I donât think thatâs what they meant by that.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âUsually when someone asks âDo you have a girlfriend/boyfriend?â, itâs their way of asking âAre you single?â
Spencer blinked his eyes, your words not yet registering in his head.
âThey were flirting with you.â
âOh⌠really?â
Nodding along, the conversation was put on halt as everyone made their way back to the table.
âYou guys had to leave him alone, huh?â
âWhy? What happened?â
âSome girls came up to Spencer and tried to hit on him.â
âOh, pretty boyâs got game now, huh?â
The team chuckled, but Spencer kept burrowing his head more into your embrace. It was clear that no matter how many girls tried their luck with him it would inevitably fail, as you were his home that he would come back to every time.
âThree million six hundred eighty four thousand three hundred thirty two times fourteen million seven hundred sixty one thousand nine hundred seventy one.â
Youâve lost count of how many stupid math questions youâve asked your human calculator boyfriend, just to see if he can actually do them. Spencer is silent for a second, and you think youâve finally stumped him.Â
âThat one is complicated.â
You sit bolt upright in his bed, looking down at him and pointing an accusatory finger. His brows raise at the manic look in your eye.Â
âYou donât know.â
âI do know. I meant it would be hard to explain if you arenât a math person.â
âBullshit!â You scoff, âyou donât know!â
âIt would display on a calculator as five-point-three-eight-eight-E-thirteen. Itâs a really big number.â
âOh, really big, huh?â you mumble, searching for your phone blindly in the sheets and scrambling to open the calculator app. âUm⌠what numbers did I say?â
Spencer repeats them back to you and you press the equals sign.Â
You look at it.Â
And then you set your phone down.Â
âI was right, huh?â he smiles up at you, probably reveling in your pouty wrongness.Â
Too proud to admit it, you collapse on top of him, burying your face in his shoulder.Â
âI donât like this game anymore. What the fuck even is an e? Why are we doing algebra?â
Spencer laughs, brushing your hair aside.Â
âThe e stands for exponent. Itâs to the power of ten.â
âEver heard of a rhetorical question?â
âYes, I have.â
Itâs hard not to snort even at his dumbest jokes.Â
âYouâre annoying. Letâs do something else.â
You roll over onto your back again, letting your head flop over to look at Spencer, whose hair is exactly the right amount of messy after a long day, falling in impossibly soft waves over the perfect lines and contours of his face. Despite lounging, heâs still in his suit from workâheâd left Quantico and immediately picked you up. There were no solid plans for the evening, so after both of you pretended that you wanted to go out for a while, you ended up back at his apartment.Â
He looks good. Almost too good.Â
âSomething like what?â he smiles lazily, reaching over and tracing his fingers over your cheek.Â
âSomething⌠naked?â
His grin widens and he shakes his head.Â
âMe naked or you naked?â
Pretending to think about it, you roll your bottom lip between your teeth.Â
âMm⌠why not both?â
âHm. Why do I feel like I know where this is going?â
The mattress sinks underneath your elbow as you prop yourself up, dropping your head over Spencerâs to kiss him.Â
âBecause youâre so smart, and you think itâs a great idea.â
He entertains your kiss for a moment. Just a moment.
âYou sound sure of yourself.â
âBecause I am!â You finally give in to your impulses, tangling your fingers in his hair and looking at him meaningfully. âIt doesnât make any sense for us to have not had sex. I donât care about any of your weird, cryptic moral reasoning.â
He grabs your wrist carefully.Â
âIt is not moral,â he scoffs. âWe havenât even talked about it yet.â
âReally? Because I feel like weâve talked about it a lot.âÂ
He begins to reply, but you realize you donât want to get into a debate over whether youâve technically talked about it yet. âI donât even care! If thatâs all thatâs standing in your way, then letâs talk about it. Right now.â
Spencer sighs, his eyes darting between yours as he reaches up to cradle your cheek.Â
âFine. But I have things to say youâre not going to like.â
âSo business as usual?â
He rolls his eyes. You allow yourself a tiny self-satisfied smirk, forever relishing in his poorly-hidden soft spot for your constant teasing. Spencer ignores this. Which is probably for the best.Â
âI know you probably wonât see it this way, butâsex is different than everything else weâve done so far. It can be really fun, obviously it feels good, it facilitates deeper feelings of connectionâthatâs all true. Which is why, in my opinion, itâs incredibly important that you be selective with who you sleep with. Because itâs so easy to do something you regret, and sex is vulnerable. It should always be with someone you trust andâand⌠care about.â
A pink flush stains his cheeks like watercolor as he stumbles over the last few words. It makes your heart flutter against the confines of your chest.
Maybe best not to think about the absence versus presence of certain four-letter words and what they may or may not mean. Youâll move on to more pressing matters and pretend like it doesnât ache just a little in your whole body.Â
You cover his hand with your own.Â
âAre you going to break up with me anytime soon?â
Spencerâs eyes widen, filling with genuine horror and confusion.Â
âWhat? No!â
âAre you going to cheat on me?â
âAbsolutely not, Iââ
âThen Iâm not going to regret it. Issue resolved. Moving on.â
âHoney, I just want you to be 100% sure that Iâm what you want.â
âOh my god,â you groan, flopping onto your back once more. âI have begged you to sleep with me on multiple occasions. We have been dating for months and I liked you even longer before that. I think about it literally every time I see you. I donât know how to be any surer.â
Itâs quiet for a moment as you study the imaginary pattern on the ceiling. The rebuttal youâd been anticipating doesnât comeâinstead, the mattress shifts next to you. Spencer enters your field of vision, now leaning over you with a little smile on his face that gives you butterflies.Â
âEvery time?â
ââŚyes, every time,â you agree, voice considerably thinner than it had been a moment ago. Spencer glances at your lips as he speaks.Â
âInteresting. And what is it that you think about exactly?â
You groan again, attempting to roll facedown, but he pins your shoulder to the bed. The way heâs sweetly kissing down your cheek and jaw is infuriating because you know itâs a false pretense.Â
âUgh, I donât know! Donât make me answer that!â
âYou said if talking about it was all that was standing in my way, we would talk about it. Now I want to talk about it. Come on,â he says, voice low and cloying against your throat as he attempts to tease the answer out of you. âTell me what you think about when you think about us having sex.â
You let out a shaky breath at the feeling of his lips skimming your neck, hating how easily he can reduce you to this.Â
âI⌠I always wonder what it will feel like. Sometimes I wonder if it will hurt.â
Spencer sighs, interrogation by way of seduction momentarily forgotten. You silently curse yourself for saying something so un-sexy.Â
âIt might, sweetheart. Thatâs one of the reasons weâve held back. IâŚÂ really donât want to hurt you. I donât even know if I can.â
You grab his face in both hands, forcing him to look at you with more confidence than you feel.Â
âSometimes I worry about it, too. But I like you a lot more than it scares me. I still want to.â
He kisses your palm.Â
âYouâll be okay. It doesnât hurt for everyone, and even if it does, youâre resilient.â
âExactly. So you have to get over yourself.â
Spencer laughs like he wasnât expecting to, eyes sparkling as he regards you. Â
âYeah. Yeah, maybe I do.â
Heâs smiling again as he leans down and kisses youâa slow, lingering thing which tastes like spearmint as you part your lips for him.Â
âPlease?â you whisper against him after a long moment. He hums, keeps kissing you.Â
âWhat is it that you think you want? You donât even know what youâre asking for.â
âTell me,â you beg, chasing his lips. âTell me what youâre going to do with me. We can talk about it. This is talking about it.â
Spencer exhales deeply, wedging a thigh between yours. Immediately you clamp around it, trying not to grind against him too overtly.Â
âYou want to know what Iâd do to you?â
âYesââ you paw at his jacket. Surprisingly, he doesnât stop you from pushing it off. Your heart pounds.Â
âWell⌠we both know how anxious you get,â he muses, pressing his lips so delicately to your fluttering pulse-point in emphasis, and then back to your mouth. His thigh pushes harder against you to supplant the absence of his lips as he speaks, though he kisses you sporadically and between sentences. âYouâre hard to get out of your head when youâre nervous, you know that? I watch it happen. One minute youâre with me, and then you start overthinking, and getting self-conscious. The only thing that seems to relax you is letting me touch youâso first I would touch you like Iâve touched you before. Iâd make sure you know how pretty you are and how good you deserve to feel.â You whimper inadvertently at his words, arching into him and grinding against his leg as he pauses to kiss the sensitive soft spot below your jaw. âYouâre going to need to be really ready to let me in. Do you know what I mean by that?â
As he asks, he pushes his thigh against you harder. Your body responds immediately, arching into him and seeking more friction. When you squeak, he takes it as a no.Â
âI mean I need you relaxed and wet. Youâll excuse my crude language.â
You pull at his tie, breathing heavier now and so turned on itâs almost painful.Â
âWhat are you gonna do after that?â
âWhat else is there to do but fuck you after that?â he breathes. âYou want me to tell you how Iâd fuck you?â
Something about it makes you whine salaciously. Youâve heard him curseâyouâve even heard him talk about fucking you. But it feels more real now; when itâs low in your ear and youâre covertly undressing him and heâs pushing your shirt over your stomach promisingly.Â
âYes, please.âÂ
He hums against your jaw, nipping and brushing his lips over the skin as he considers. Leaves you waiting.Â
âI would have to take my time with you. Youâll be overwhelmed. I know you think you wonât, but you will. Iâm going to have to be so, so careful with you, angel. Itâs going to drive me insane. But it will feel good for you.â
âWhy careful? I donât want that.â
He chuckles. A chill runs down your spine.Â
âYeah, you do. Youâre going to want me to be careful when Iâmââ he pauses, pressing his thumb to your bare lower tummy and dragging up to a spot below your belly button. He presses down lightly again. âRight here. Approximately.â
The surface of the sun has nothing on the temperature of your skin in this moment, as you writhe underneath him in both arousal and embarrassment. Mostly, burning need. You feel almost sick with it.Â
âPlease donât make me wait anymore. Just do it, please, Spencer. I need it to be you, I donât want it to be anyone else. I promise Iâm ready.â
Itâs silent for a moment. Your heart quickens. You sense his walls wearing away, his instinct to keep you intact for god knows what reason crumbling. Heâs finally going to give you what youâve been begging for.Â
Spencer opens his mouth, eyes glimmeringâ
And then his phone rings.Â
You both freezeâhe melts dejectedly before you do, more accustomed to an ill-timed phone call and realizing the finality it can present.Â
Heâs breathing heavily against your neck, as if maybe whoever it is will just hang up. But the phone keeps ringing.Â
âIâm sorry.â
Your stomach sinks as he sits up, grabbing his phone from the side table and rubbing circles on your inner thigh as he answers.
âThis is Reid,â he says, lackluster.Â
If you wanted, you could hear what Penelope is sayingâbut you donât bother listening. Itâs going to be a case. Spencer is about to leave. The details are his problem.Â
âOkay. Iâll be there in an hour.â
He hangs up, tossing the phone onto the mattress and not speaking for a moment, just continuing to rub your leg apologetically. Watching you almost mournfullyâtaking in your disheveled hair, your likely blown-out pupils, the shirt pushed almost over your chest.Â
âI have to go right now,â he finally manages with a heavy sigh, gently pulling your shirt back into place.Â
You sit up, shedding all the hopes that had been building for the evening, and try to sound chipperâthough all you feel is bitter disappointment that goes deeper than you understand.Â
âI know. Go ahead, I can get a cab home.â
He frowns, running his hand over the back of your hair.Â
âI donât love the idea of you standing on the sidewalk waiting for a car in this part of town so late. Do you just want to stay here for the night and go home tomorrow?â
You force a smile. Great. So youâll be spending the night in his bed after allâjust without him.Â
âSure. Thanks.â
âYeah.â
Neither of you are feeling particularly grateful.Â
Soon youâre walking him to his own door. Both of you come to a stop in front.Â
âIâm sorry,â he sighs again.Â
âSpencer, itâs fine. Itâs your job. You donât need to apologize. You were very clear about this part when we started dating.â
âI know, but⌠itâs easier in theory than in practice.â
You smile. If Spencer is a reflection of you, it doesnât quite reach your eyes. His hair is still messy from your fingers running through it and heâs missing his tie. You hope all his coworkers see and feel bad about taking him away from you.Â
But itâs not their fault. You just want someone to blame.Â
Instead you mould yourself to his body, wrapping around him like you belong there. He returns your embrace, pressing his lips into the crook of your shoulder and rubbing your back in that way he always does with you.Â
In that moment, your affection for him becomes so profound itâs like a chemical reactionâeverywhere he touches burns and you love him so fucking much it aches in every inch of your body the way your muscles do when you have a bad fever. Love is the most terrible of afflictions, you realize. It is a fever dream. Itâs every fiber of your being screaming to tell him how you feel, to beg him on your knees not to go because you love him like a child loves a parent or a bee loves honeysuckle or the ocean loves the horizon. Pared down to your most basic components, the barest version of yourself, you require him. Your soul needs his soul.Â
âSpencer?â
âHm?âÂ
Itâs nothing more than an absentminded hum against your skin.Â
âIâŚâ
Should you be looking him in the eye when you say this? Should you say it right before he has to leave? Just because you say it doesnât change the fact that heâs about to be gone for several long days. Maybe this is a terrible time to admit something that suddenly feels so true and so consequential.Â
He senses your internal conflict, pulling back despite your resistance and holding your face between his hands.Â
âYou what?â He murmurs, soft eyes bouncing back and forth between your own. Fuckâyou feel so observed, now. Like he can read your mind.Â
âI forget.â
FUUUUUUCK.Â
Spencer blinks. Processes. You watch the disbelief crystallizing over his eyes like ice freezing over a lake.Â
He knows.Â
He knows you didnât forget, and he probably knows what you were going to say, and heâs going to tell himself he was wrong to spare your dignity.Â
Everything hurts when he kisses you. You wonder what regret tastes like.Â
âWell, let me know if you remember.â
Itâs too gentle and at the same time he canât hide the edge with all the tenderness in the world. You nod as if in a trance, already looking forward to dissociating as you lie in bed and stare at the dark ceiling.
Two small goodbyes are exchanged, slightly stifled now, as if shared between drunk strangers who have sobered up and are mutually embarrassed about how candidly theyâd interacted before.Â
You close the door behind him, doing up all the locks, and meticulously flick every light switch in the apartment off before climbing into his bedâthough you donât really feel like you deserve to be there anymore.
But perhaps this is all an overreaction. Itâs not like you owe it to him to say I love you, or anythingâit was bad timing, anyway. And why canât he say it? In fact, why hasnât he said it?Â
Maybe you have it all wrong.Â
Maybe he doesnât feel that way about you.Â
You fall asleep before you allow these questions to make you sick.Â
24 hours go by.Â
24 hours go by and you really had meant to leave his apartmentâit was just that you woke up late, and your phone was dead so you couldnât call a car, so you charged it while you made breakfast, and then you ate, and then you decided to take a shower and wash your clothes, and then it was two in the afternoon and you hadnât left yet and you decided to walk to the store and replenish the groceries youâd used up.Â
Maybe you got a bit distracted looking at flowers and other beautiful things at the market and by the time you got home it was 5:00, so you decided to wait until seven to skip rush hour. And then eight, just to be sure.Â
Before you know it, itâs midnight, and youâre dozing off in his bed again (teeth cleaned with the brush youâd bought at the storeâmaybe this whole situation hadnât been entirely unwitting on your part.)
Throughout the day, you tried to let all your anxiety about the previous night melt away. If itâs something that needs to be addressed, Spencer will address it. Everything will work out in the end. That thought is how youâre able to doze off.Â
Youâre almost asleep when your phone lights up and begins buzzing on the side table. You wince as your eyes open, not adjusting well to the harsh bright display and unable to discern whoâs even calling you at this hour. Stupidly, probably because youâre half asleep, you answer without checking.Â
âHello?â
Your voice is groggy, quiet with sleep.Â
âShit, did I wake you?â
âSpence?â you whisper, stomach flipping at the sound of his voice on the other line. You feel caught, still sleeping in his bed.Â
â⌠yeah,â he chuckles. âDid you not check who was calling before you picked up?â
âI was asleep,â you pout. âKinda.â
âOkay. Go back to sleep, honey. Weâll talk tomorrow.â
You sit bolt upright, phone balanced between tense fingers and speaking directly into the microphone.Â
âNo! No, Iâm awake. Whatâs up? Why did you call?â
A longer stretch of silenceâyouâre too sleepy to comprehend what it might mean, though never too sleepy to worry about it. With a pang of pain, you recall your strange goodbye, the words you hadnât said.Â
âI just needed to hear your voice,â he sighs. You frown, staring at nothing in particular in the pitch black room.Â
âOh. Is everything okay?â
âAs much as it can be.â
âRight.â
More quiet. You chew on the inside of your cheek, stricken with a sudden feeling of awkwardness that you havenât had with Spencer in a while.Â
âIâm sorry⌠I donât really know what to say.â
âThatâs okay,â he says, and you can hear the smile in his voice which makes you feel a bit better, âwhy donât you tell me about your day? Or you can absolutely go back to sleep, if youâre too tired.â
âDonât ask me about my day,â you whisper, flopping down on the bed once more. Shame seeps into your voice. He laughs.Â
âWhat? Why?â
âBecause if I tell you youâre going to think Iâm super weird and youâre going to break up with me.â
Laughter tapers off into gentler tones.Â
âI already think youâre super weird. Itâs actually one of your most attractive qualities.â
Blood rushes to your cheeks.Â
âBut itâs like⌠borderline crazy.â
Immediately, he replies, âfor better or worse, I also frequently find myself attracted to crazy.â
âThank you for calling me crazy and super weird,â you grumble.Â
âI also called you attractive twice. Tell me.â
When his tone takes on that easy, assertive quality, and itâs sort of raspy and low because itâs late and heâs been talking all day, and you can hear the lazy smile on his faceâyou imagine him laying on his hotel bed, arm slung over his eyes in the dark as he grins into the microphoneâyou have a very difficult time saying no.Â
âFine. Guess where I am right now.â
âUm, I would hope youâre in bed?â
You smile to yourself, basking in the victory of successfully throwing him off his game even slightly.Â
âGuess whose bed.â
Silence.Â
âWhat an interesting question.â That cocky smile, the low drawling is back, and you chew on your lip, ignoring the shiver that runs down your spine. âIf itâs not mine or yours, weâre going to have issues.â
âBut if it is yours? Youâre not going to call the police on me?â
âWhy would I call the police? To tell them thereâs a pretty girl in my bed and I donât want her there?â
âTo tell them your psychopathic girlfriend broke into your apartment and might be holding hostages there.â
Spencer laughs; a brittle, drawn out thing, flat and quiet as the desert.
âIf you were a psychopath, calling the cops would be a waste of time. I would handle you myself.â The idea of being handled has your thighs clenching. âButâyeah, donât invite anyone else in.â More humor finds its way into his voice, momentarily relieving some tension that had sneakily begun to build. âHaving people in my space makes me anxious.â
âBut not me?â Your whisper is half flirtatious, half insecure. Spencerâs reply is soft, as if heâs picking up on this from hundreds of miles away.
âNo, not you. You are always the exception.â
âGood,â you say, cheeks aching as you half-bury your warm face into his pillow. âBecause I made myself really comfortable. You have a nice shower, by the way.â
Spencer groans.Â
âYouâre killing me.â
âWhat? What did I do!â
âDonât talk to me about my bed and my shower. I might start to think youâre intentionally being a brat.â
âYou asked me about my day! Iâm just telling you what I did!â
But youâre also intentional teasing him for sure.  After a pause, he sighs in defeat.Â
âYouâre right. I did do that. Tell me what else happened.â
âWell,â you begin, all too eager, âI had to put my clothes in the dryer after I got out, so I borrowed some of yours. But then they were way comfier than mine, so after I went to the store I put them back on, andââ
âOkay.â
âOkay what?â you frown.Â
âTell me what this is.â
âIâI donât know what you mean.â
Lying to a profiler is usually pointless.Â
âIâm not stupid, sweetheart. Tell me why you keep talking about my shower and my bed and my clothes.â
Caught red-handed. Your skin heats up.Â
âI donât know. I miss you.â
He hums in a way that blurs the line between sympathetic and patronizing. Even through the phone you can feel the bass of it in your bones.  It changes the frequency youâre vibrating at. Itâs hypnotic.Â
âBut thatâs not really why youâre being intentionally provocative, is it?â
âNo,â you admit quietly. âIâm still upset you had to go last night.â
âSo youâre frustrated and youâre taking it out on me?â
Your brow furrows. Well, when he puts it like thatâŚ
âIâm not taking anything out on you.â
âI think you are. And I donât appreciate that, because Iâm on your side, honey. Do you think I prefer being in a hotel bed by myself or being in my bed with you?â
Somehow, he makes you feel like a scolded child. But he makes it appealing in ways you donât understand.Â
âYour bed with me,â you murmur, skin prickling with the coldness of his absence even as you curl under the blanket.Â
âRight. So why donât you tell me what I can do for you right now, instead of punishing me for things that are beyond my control?â
âI wasnât punishing you,â you mutter.Â
âNo? You werenât intentionally talking about using my shower and sleeping in my bed and putting on my clothes so that Iâd have to think about what I canât have right now?â
âIââ
âBelieve me when I tell you I have been thinking about what I canât have, all day. Your efforts are entirely redundant and you canât say anything about yourself that is even close to as dirty as the frankly disrespectful thoughts Iâve been having about you for seventeen hours.â
The lack of air is making you so dizzy your vision goes gray at the edges.Â
âWhat⌠what thoughts?â
âNone that you need to concern yourself with.â
âYou canât just say something like that and then not tell me!â you insist. Heâs obviously giving you a taste of your own medicine and itâs fair but it doesnât mean you have to like it.Â
âI can do whatever I want,â Spencer corrects cooly in a way that pisses you off beyond belief because heâs right. It triggers some adolescent immaturity within youâa desire to get back at him, so to speak. He wants intentionally provocative? He can have it.Â
âFine. Then so can I. And thereâs nothing you can do to stop me.â
âI wouldnât dream of it even if I could.â
âSpencer,â you warn. âIf you donât tell me what you were thinking Iâm gonnaââ you look around the room for ammo. âIâm gonna look through your nightstand!â
âGo ahead. Iâll warn you, itâs not very interesting.â
âSounds like what someone who has something hide would say,â you mumble, crawling across the mattress through tangled sheets and using your phone flashlight to open the drawer.Â
Spencer is patient and silent as you take in its contentsâa small blue leather-bound notebook (full of what looks like Russian), a fountain pen, a glasses case, various kinds of vitamins, andâ
âSpencer Reid,â you say, dragging out his name and pretending nothing is fluttering in your stomach, âwhat are these?â
âI donât know. I canât see what youâre referring to.â
âTake a wild guess.â
âOh, I have one. But Iâd like to hear you say it.â
You realize you may have gotten yourself in deeper than you meant to by going through his stuff. Wellâthey donât say karma is a bitch for nothing.Â
âWhat are you doing with a box of condoms?âÂ
He chuckles and you feel it in your whole body, warm as you stretch across his mattress and eye the box like it might jump out at you.Â
âThose are years old. Iâve used three since I bought them.â
âDonât tell me that,â you whine. âI donât wanna think about all the other women youâve seduced.â
âYou wanted them to be for you, huh?âÂ
You flush. Honestly you hadnât even thought about that.Â
âI⌠I donât know. I kind of just assumedâŚâ
Itâs silent for a second and you frown, realizing you hadnât even considered protection when youâd imagined sleeping with him before.Â
âYou assumed what, honey?â he asks, voice soft.Â
âItâs dumb. I canât tell you.â
âYou can tell me anything. Iâm not going to think itâs dumb, I promise.â
You chew on your lip, letting your eyes unfocus on the box as you muster the courage to be honest.Â
âWhenever I imagined it⌠we didnâtâŚÂ use anything.â
The words make you cringe even as youâre saying them. So does the quiet that follows.Â
âWhen you imagine us sleeping together, we donât use a condom?â
âAh!â The phone drops to the mattress as you cover your ears and roll onto your side, curling into yourself once more. âYou didnât have to say it! You make me sound so weird!â
âItâs not weird,â he laughs, because he can probably imagine exactly what you just did, âI just wanted to make sure I was understanding you. That said⌠we would definitely use protection.â
âDo we have to?â
The quiet words take even you by surpriseâand they seem to stun Spencer as well. Several false starts are punctuated by a sigh as he gathers his thoughts.Â
âWe really should, baby. Thatâs the kind of thing we need to take seriously.â
âBut youâre⌠youâre good, right?â
Thankfully he picks up on your meaning.Â
âI am. I wouldnât touch you if I werenât.â
âAnd Iâm good. So...â
âHm. And has anyone ever explained to you where babies come from?â
You groan in frustration.Â
âSpencer, Iâm being serious! There are ways to negate that.â
âHoney,â he murmurs, âI understand that. But it would be irresponsible of me to say yes. We can talk about it in the future, butââ
âIâm telling you itâs already dealt with. The chances of an accidental pregnancy are slim to none.â
The new information hangs in the air for a moment until Spencer speaksâto your surprise, his voice is low and humorous.Â
âThat is⌠good to know. But even soâIâm setting a dangerous precedent if I always let you get exactly what you want.â
âIs it such a bad thing that I just wannaâI wanna know what it feels like? You donât want that?â
âThatâs not what I said. I want to know exactly what you feel like. Iâm just hesitant to give in so quickly because it makes me look weak.â
You laugh breathlessly, caught between being turned on by the first part of his sentence and amused by the sarcastic second half. Your thighs clench and your hand absentmindedly wanders between them.Â
âYou know what I was thinking about?â you ask. Spencer hums curiously. âI was thinking about when you let me, um⌠when you let me touch you how you touch me.â He hums again, but you can hear the amused curve of a smile in it now.
âWhen you had your mouth all full of me and you looked so pretty?â
âWhen Iâyeah,â you agree, too caught up to deny his compliment as your fingers brush your most sensitive spot through clothing. âAnd  how you got me all messy after. And I was wondering what it would feel like⌠inside me.â
He sucks in a breath. Your legs brush against each other and you twist slightly as you pretend like youâre not touching yourself just a little bit.Â
âYou want me to come inside you?â
âYeah,â you whisper, brain short-circuiting at the way those words sound in his voice.Â
â
On the other side of the line, Spencer isnât doing a fantastic job of thinking clearly either. His dick is half-hard already and itâs only getting worse with each little noise you make that you donât seem to realize youâre making.Â
âReally? That would be very messy, baby. Iâm surprised thatâs what you want.â
âBut I really want it,â you breathe. Heâs not even looking as he slips his hand under the waistband of his pajamas and palms himself, his other hand rubbing tiredly over his face as his phone rests on his chest. This was not how he intended for this call to go, believe it or notâbut heâs here now.Â
âYeah? Is that why youâre touching yourself right now?â
You go silentâwhich is more or less exactly the reaction Spencer had been expecting. Patiently he waits for you to deny it, in three, twoâ
ââM not.â
Now, he could explain how he knows thatâs a lie. How your breathing pattern changed, and your voice got softer and airier, and how you started speaking with smaller words in fragmented sentences. But he doesnât feel like explaining any of that.Â
âI know thatâs not true,â he murmurs. âYou know what? It wasnât fair to get you all worked up last night and then leave. I donât want you frustrated, honey. I want you to do whatever you need to do.â
You make a little gasping noise, and Spencer can imagine the way your back would arch when you did it. His own hips buck slightly as his dick twitches under his fingers.Â
âWhere are you touching?â
âUmâover my clothes.â
Cute.Â
âGo under them for me. Tell me how it feels when youâre touching yourself like that.â
It takes a moment, in which all he hears is the rustling of fabric, until youâre whispering, âfeels⌠it feels good. I wish you were here.â
He inhales, freeing his cock and squeezing the base.Â
âI know. Just listen to my voice, pretty. Iâm right here.â
Spencer allows himself a few slow tugs as he imagines whatâs happening in his bed. You make a squeaking noise, like a held-back moan, and his eyes screw shut.Â
âI need them inside,â you whine, and he knows youâre referring to his fingersâthe ones currently stroking his own leaking cock.Â
âYou can use your own, just give yourself a minute first. Remember what I said about needing to be ready?â
âI am readyââ judging by the surprised chirp you interrupt yourself with, youâve proven yourself right. What surprises Spencer is the weak sound of disappointment you make next. âSpence, it doesnât feel the same.â
âWeâre different sizes, honey. Your hands arenât as big as mine. But you can still make it feel good.âÂ
He almost says, 90% of the nerves in the vaginal canal are located in the lower thirdâin other words, within approximately 2.36 inches from the opening, which you can most certainly reachâbut he refrains. Heâs not sure if thatâs good dirty talk.Â
âYou have a really sensitive spot about three inches up, right in front. Itâs going to feel a little different than the rest of you when you touch it. I want you to try and find it for me, okay?â
âOkay,â you breathe, ever-eager to please even from a great distance. Thereâs a quiet moment. âI canâtâI donât think I can râoh,â
The moan is so pretty Spencer canât help speeding up the motion of his hand, hissing slightly as his fingers brush against the angry tip with every pump.Â
âDid you find it?â
âYeah,â you whine, a weak, high-pitched thing. âOh my god.â
âBe gentle,â he warns with some effort as his own hips jump slightly. âYouâre really sensitive there. If youâre not careful youâll make yourself sore.â
âI donât careâholy shitââ the way your voice rises and tightens to a squeak at the end has Spencer moaning as he fucks his fist. A black hole forms and warps time, turning every minute into a second and every second into an infinity until he has no idea how much time is going by. He drags his thumb over the tip, smearing precum over his cock and whining as his jaw drops at the feeling. âOh my god, Spencer,â in that same strained, high voice. ââM gonnaâah!â
He gets the general sentiment.Â
âWhat, baby? Youâre gonna make yourself come all over your fingers? Is that what you wanted to tell me?â
âMhm!â
âYeah, I bet you are. It feels good, huh?â
âYes,â you cry.Â
âSee? You donât need my fingers to feel good. Mine barely fit, you know that? I have to hold your fucking hips down whenever I put my fingers in you because you canât stop squirming. I donât know how you think youâre going to take my cock.â
âSpencer!âÂ
He knows.Â
âCome, baby. Let me hear you.â
The delicate sounds you make as you bring yourself to orgasm tip him over the edge of his ownâgrunting as he comes all over his fist.Â
âJesus,â he strains under his breath, the word dragging out into two long syllables as his hips buck involuntarily and cum drips down his knuckles. Heâs lightheaded and heâs created a mess and it all happened so quickly. âFuck,â he breathes, a rasping chuckle as he reaches for the towel heâd dropped on the bed after his shower earlier. âYou conscious over there?â
âIâm conscious,â you slur, breathing heavily. âIâve never had an orgasm by myself before.â
âAre you proud of yourself?â Spencer smiles, wiping his hand off and making sure heâs otherwise clean. âYou should be. I am.â
Heâs barely kidding.Â
âIâll be proud when I can do it without your help,â you tease.Â
âBut Iâll always want to help you with that.â His already warm face flushes further as he goes over what heâd said. âSorry I was so vulgar.â
You laugh. He blushes even more.Â
âAre you? I think you secretly love being vulgar.â
âI donât know why! I have no idea where it comes from. I would never speak that way in any other context. I should probably work on that. Sometimes I look back on the things I say and Iâm genuinely appalled.â
âWell, donât stop on my account. Personally I enjoy it.â
âYeah, I think Iâm corrupting you. You probably shouldnât enjoy it.â
The truth of it weighs heavy on his mind, but heâs pretty sure his voice alone doesnât betray that and you canât sense it through the phone.Â
âOh, my god. Do not do that falling on your sword shit. I like being corrupted by you. If you stop Iâll be very upset.â
âWell god forbid you get upset,â he teases gently. Idly he wonders if the reason heâs suddenly feeling so depressed is because his cortisol levels were already high from the case, and then he jarred his system with an orgasm, spiking his dopamine and ultimately causing it to plummet without the oxytocin release that post-coital physical contact would usually provide.Â
Or if it was something else. It could also be something else.Â
For the millionth time, he wishes he was with you. Part of him also wants to go to sleep. But mostly he wishes he was with you.Â
â
A comfortable silence settles over the conversation. In the ditch between words, youâre mapping constellations in the texture of Spencerâs ceiling. If you squeeze your eyes almost shut, you can imagine it really is the night sky. You can imagine heâs really here.Â
You think about what he saidâhis apparently mindless vulgarity. Did it mean anything? Or was he just rambling to get you off?
âSpencer?â you murmur.Â
âYeah?â
âCan I ask you a question?â
He sounds earnest, perhaps a little tired, as he replies, âalways,â through the little metal rectangle on your chest. He likes me and my questions are important to him, you repeat to yourself silently as you work up the strength.Â
âIf Penelope hadnât called, last night⌠were you going to have sex with me?âÂ
Your lip tastes like his toothpaste as you chew it. Spencer sucks in a breath of air like heâs about to speakâand lets it fizzle out like foam on a carbonated drink.Â
âI donât know,â he finally admits, lamely. âThat wasnât my plan, but you can be extremely convincing when you want to be.â
âBut why canât it be your plan?â Itâs an almost whine, pouty and childishâbut the next words are quiet and pained. âIs it something Iâm doing wrong?â
âNo, no! Itâs not you. Youâre perfect. Itâsâitâs complicated. Itâs a me thing.â
Such trite wordsâsuch a ubiquitous, simple excuse sounds almost comical from his mouth when you know heâs capable of all the eloquence in the world. Itâs not you, itâs me. Itâs ridiculous.Â
âOkay. Let me simplify this for you,â you begin with an uncharacteristic assertiveness that surprises even you. âI want to have sex with you. Either we are going to have sex or weâre not. So your future branches in two diverging paths. In one, we have sex, and then we keep having sex. In the other we never have sex ever. If you want to ever have the privilege of fucking me, then we just have to do it. Otherwise it simply will never happen. And Iâm not eternally patient, Reid.â
Go me, you think, slightly breathless from your monologue.Â
âWatch your mouth,â he says dryly. Something about the chastisement makes your stomach flip and your whole body tingle. âWhen you talk to me you call me Spencer. I will also accept Doctor Reid.â You wrestle down a smile, refusing to let him change the subject. A delayed sigh from him sobers up the conversation. âYou know what I want. Iâve been very clear with you about that. ButâŚâ
âButâŚ?â
Another sigh. A deeper, shuddering sigh, like his breath is searching for balance. Like Spencer is in a precarious position for which he was unprepared.Â
âButâbut to be completely honest⌠I worry that youâll regret choosing me. And I know virginity is a social construct and Iâm not implying that your worth will somehow be diminished if we have sex but regardless of my views on virginity as a construct, having sex for the first time can be weird and scary and itâs incredibly intimate and I donât want you to regret your first time like I regret mine because you chose the wrong person.â
The words come at you so rapid-fire it takes you a moment to process them. And aside from all the ways you want to reassure him that you will not regret choosing himâthat you could never, ever regret anything about himâone thing stands out.Â
âYou regret your first time?âÂ
Something between a scoff and a sigh travels through the line. You can tell heâs not annoyed at you for asking so much as heâs flustered himself with all his own words as he occasionally does.Â
âYeah. Yes. Sometimes I do. The personâshe didnâtâŚÂ like me as much as I liked her. And I was really, really in love with her, and she knew that and she knew she wasnât in love with meâor maybe she was, I donât knowâbut my point is, when one person likes the other more than the other person like them, things get complicated. And however you feel about meâthatâs fine. Itâs fine. I donât want you to feel bad if we donât feel exactly the same way about each other. I understand that this is newer for you, itâs different, IâI just donât want us to do something we canât undo because I donât want to relive that. And Iâm not saying it will never happen but I just donât want you to make this choice when⌠when right now, I think weâre in different places emotionally. Regardless of that, I want you to choose the right person. I donât want you to choose me and then find out that we feel differently after we sleep together and leave you feeling like you signed up for something you didnât understand. Iâm sorry. Maybe telling you this is selfish. But Iâve been thinking about it and trying to ignore it and I think I just have to be completely honest.â
Your ears ring like Spencer just fired a blank right into the microphone. Like you just got backhanded across the face and now you have the worldâs worst case of whiplash.Â
Every finger is numb and your blood is so cold it feels blue as it slithers thick through your veins.Â
What you want to do is scream. What you want to do is go back to last night and stop yourself from almost telling him I love you, slap yourself and keep your cards a little closer to your chest. Because now he knows, and he doesnât feel the same.Â
You want to scream bloody murder.Â
But when you try, when you unhinge your jaw and part your chapped lips and expect a bellow to come hurdling up the corridor of your throat with so much force it rattles your bones, all that falls out is a small, âoh.â
Maybe thatâs worse.Â
Spencer doesnât reply. You hate yourself for feeling obliged to fill the silence.Â
âI didnât realize youâŚâ
I didnât realize that you donât love me back.Â
I didnât realize I like you more than you like me.Â
I didnât realize youâd tell me to masturbate in your fucking bed and then drop this not even five minutes later.Â
If Spencer Reid was able to talk to you over the phone with the same amount of affection and familiarity as always, like everything was still okay, knowing you love him and he doesnât love you the whole time, he is not who you thought he was.Â
âIâm sorry,â he lamely says again, like it could ever help.Â
More silence. Now you canât bring yourself to speak, so Spencer does.Â
âI realize how awkward this is. I really didnât mean to put you in this position. Especially not over the phone when Iâgod, Iâm stupid. Iâm sorry. But can weâcan we talk about this in person when I get back? Please?â
Is that what grownups do? Is the proper etiquette for him to take you out to dinner and explain why heâs not in love with you? Is he going to break up with you?
What does one even wear to a breakup date?
âOkay,â you whisper. Your eyes sting, your everything stings, like youâve been wrapped in a shroud of briar. Sheets that were soft a moment ago feel like sandpaper on open wounds. You feel like an open wound.Â
Spencer sighs. Itâs a sound of relief that confuses and hurts you even more.Â
âOkay. Iâokay. Thank you. UmâIâll let you go back to sleep, now.â
âOkay,â you repeatâas if any of this were okay. But you canât keep being that stupid girl who feels it all so much harder, who loves easily and begs to be loved in return, too naive to assume that someone who treats her so kindly might not reciprocate her feelings. It has to be okay, because if itâs not, youâre silly and dramatic and youâre just proving him right.Â
âGoodnight,â Spencer whispers, and you canât help but feeling that itâs the last time youâll ever hear those words from his mouth while youâre in his bed. And heâs not even fucking here.
So you pull the blanket a little higher. You let your tears stain his pillow because theyâll be invisible by the morning. It will be like they were never here. Like you were never here.Â
âGoodnight.â
All Iâve Ever Wanted
Season 4!Five Hargreeves x fem!reader
! Spoilers ahead !
Summary: six years of travelling to different timelines, and Five isnât sure how much longer he can go on for. Until he stumbles upon a greenhouse, full of strawberries. And you.
Word count: 4212
A/N: so season 4 was a⌠thing that happened. This story is basically my own idea of how things shouldâve gone in ep 5. Instead of the weird Lila/Five situation, itâs just Five, and his chance of living a normal life with someone new. Hope you all enjoy, and feedback is appreciated :)
Number Five was never one to back down from a challenge. Having been through a series of different apocalyptic events, transporting to a timeline where he spent 40 years alone, and dealing with a misfit group consisting of his exhausting siblings, Five was up for anything. But the current situation he was dealing with? For the first time in his life, he was at breaking point.
After another wasted day spending hour after hour searching for any clues or information on how to get back to the correct timeline, Five returns to the subway, entering one of the compartments and slumping down in the first chair he sees. He rubs his eyes and lets out a visceral sigh, wanting nothing more than to go to sleep. He reaches into his pockets, pulling out a small pack of dried fruits. He rips it open and devours every last piece. He canât remember the last time he had a proper meal. He was becoming more desperate, rummaging through trash cans and foraging in bushes, hoping anything he picks isnât poisonous.
The compartment jolts and begins to move, making its way to the next timeline. Five wipes his hands on his already dirty pants, standing up and walking slowly to the door. He wonders whether his apocalypse counterpart will be waiting for him this time.
After several minutes, and Five almost falling over from his lack of sleep, he finally arrives, the doors opening. He steps out, immediately making his way up the stairs. No time to waste. He cautiously pokes his head out, looking around for any signs of, well, himself. Before he can move out more, something wizzes past his head. A bullet. He ducks, as more shots are fired directly at him.
âGive me a fuckinâ break,â Five mumbles, as he finally takes notices of the other him in the distance.
He sticks up his middle finger, and no soon after closes his fists, blinking as quick as he possibly could.
The Five with a gun disappears along with the destroyed world around him. Five drops his arms to his sides, turning around and admiring the new environment. Luscious, greenery surrounds him, with an array of different flowers sprouting from the ground beneath him. A small pond with fish glimmers in the sunshine, lily pads floating on top. He continues turning, finding himself standing next to a tall greenhouse. The glass was slightly foggy, making it difficult to see whatâs inside. Five leans in closer, squinting as if that would help. He can barely make out what appears to be pots of fruit and vegetables, some fully sprouted and others not yet ripe. His stomach rumbles, the feeling of hunger consuming him.
A rustle sounds from behind him. He turns quickly, coming face to face with a pair of shears. Five jumps back slightly. He then spots the person wielding said âweaponâ. A young woman, probably early twenties, wearing a light yellow dress and a pair of brown sandals. Five canât help but admire her beauty, if it wasnât for the fact she had a face like fury and didnât seem afraid of cutting him in half.
âCan I help you?â Her words are kind, but her harsh tone says otherwise.
Five canât exactly tell this young woman the truth. Showing up randomly in her back yard, covered in grime, gawking at her crops through the window. He raises his hands up in the air, trying to convey that he meant no harm.
âIâm so sorry,â he says, his throat sore having not spoken to anyone in quite some time. âI donât really know how I got here.â Thatâs not exactly true. âIâve been travelling for a few days now.â Try six years. âAnd I could really do with a hot shower and something to eat.â
The woman doesnât say anything, just staring, with the shears still held out in front of her.
Five puts his arms down, shrugging in defeat. âIâll just go. I truly am sorry, I didnât mean to freak you out.â He looks down. âOr step all over your rose garden.â He gingerly moves away from the destroyed flowers.
He turns and begins to walk away, hoping to find an exit as quick as possible. Blinking in front of this woman probably wouldnât help his cause. A warm hand grabs hold of his wrist, forcing him to stop and look back. She has the shears loosely hanging by her side, as her eyes pierce into Fiveâs. She seems hesitant, words forming in her mind. At last, she speaks again.
âYouâre telling the truth?â
Five nods incessantly, feeling like a child.
âAnd if I let you in and make you something to eat, you wonât try and kill me?â
Five holds back a laugh, knowing sheâs being deadly serious. âI wouldnât dare.â
The woman waits a beat, then huffs. âCome on, I was just about to start dinner.â
She moves past Five, walking into three greenhouse. He takes this as a sign to follow after her.
***
The young woman allows Five to use her shower, and heâs thankful for the change of clothes she provides for him too. The home is small and cosy, playing into the stereotypical cottage core of living. The lighting is soft, and the smell of pumpkin seems to waft through into every room. Itâs calming, itâs peaceful, itâs something that makes Five feel on edge. He isnât used to the domestic life, away from the terror and destruction, trying to save the world over and over. He knows he canât stay here long, but he wonât miss the opportunity of a proper cooked meal.
After putting on the change of clothes, Five makes his way down the hall and into the kitchen, a small buffet waiting for him. He finds it hard not to drool, the potatoes and fresh pie, along with the fruit and vegetables heâd spotted earlier. It looks incredible. He takes a seat, as the woman places down a final plate of tomatoes, sitting down opposite Five.
They dish out the food, filling their plates as high as they can, especially Five. He tries not to look like a slob in front of the pretty girl, but finds it hard not to drop some things down his top. She doesnât seem to notice, or pretends not to.
The woman takes a sip of her drink, clearing her throat. âSo,â her soft voice makes Five look up from his plate. âDo you have a name or is that one of the many mysteries of the man shovelling food down his throat like he hasnât eaten in several years?â
The woman isnât afraid of being upfront. Five admires that. Although, itâs not surprising considering heâs a complete stranger sheâs trusted in her home. He puts down his knife and fork, grabbing a napkin to wipe his mouth.
âNo, I have a name. Itâs Fi-,â he catches himself, unsure if his ânameâ would just create more confusion, and unwanted questions. âJerome. Just, Jerome.â
The woman squints her eyes, but doesnât push further, seeming to move past his stumble. âOkay. I wouldnât have pegged you for a Jerome.â
Five shrugs, not knowing what else to say.
âMy names Y/N.â
Five nods. âOkay. Weâre closer already.â
âDonât push it,â Y/N says, a small smile gracing her face. Five canât help but pull the same expression.
***
After a hearty dinner, and some obvious awkward silences, Five insists on helping Y/N do the washing up. The sun was beginning to set, and Five knows heâll have to leave soon, but something stops him from doing so. He doesnât want to admit it, but this was the most relaxed heâd felt in a long time. The fear or worry of something bad happening wasnât there, and as he stands close to the woman he had barely met 2 hours ago, he realises what heâd been missing in his 60 something years. A place to live, with a person who makes him feel safe.
âJerome,â the voice breaks through his thoughts, as Five almost forgets the name heâd given to this woman. âI feel like weâve skirted around the topic enough. Is there any reason you were in the state you were in, taking refuge behind my greenhouse?â
Five places down the plate he was cleaning, turning to face her fully. Her expression is calm, and her voice shows no sign of interrogation. Itâs a first for Five, as heâs become accustomed to people prodding him for information only for their own benefit. No oneâs ever shown true interest in him.
He shrugs. âItâs been a tough couple of years. More than that I guess.â Fives eyes glaze over. âI havenât seen my family in a long time, and I donât know if I ever will. And if I do, Iâm terrified of the state that Iâll find them in.â
Y/N stops what sheâs doing, also turning to look at Five, a look of worry taking over her face. He knows heâs said more than he should have, but he couldnât help it. Heâs not good at sharing his feelings, and when he does, heâs scared of what will happen once the flood gates are opened. He isnât sure if heâll ever be able to close them.
âWhat dâyou mean? Are they in some kind of trouble?â She asks, a slight shake in her voice. âAre you in trouble?â
Five shakes his head, not wanting to stress out this poor woman whoâs been nothing but doting to him. âNo! No, I just,â he sighs, knowing heâs really put his foot in it. âI just care about them, a lot. Too much. And I donât even want to think about not seeing them again.â
A soft hand brushes against Fiveâs cheek, as he glances at Y/N wiping a tear away from his face. He didnât even realise heâd started crying. He sniffles, moving away and rubbing at his eyes, fearing how red they may look. He sucks in a deep breath, calming his beating heart. Whether itâs from talking about his family, or the touch from the woman next to him, he isnât sure. But he fears heâs overstayed his welcome.
Five moves away from the kitchen counter. âI guess I should probably go. Donât wanna miss my train.â Although he knows theyâll always be one there waiting for him.
He heads for the door, remembering to go upstairs and collect his dirty clothes before he leaves. Footsteps are heard from behind him.
âUh,â Five swivels back around, as Y/N hesitates over her words. âThis may seem kinda forward, and a dangerous move on my part, but, I wouldnât be able to sleep tonight knowing you were out there in the middle of the night, traveling by yourself.â
Five holds his breath, not wanting to jump the gun, but already anticipating the next sentence out of her mouth.
âI have extra pillows, and blankets.â Y/N shrugs. âItâs not the most comfortable couch but Iâd say itâs more comfortable than the chairs on the train.â
Neither of them speak for a while. Five ponders her offer over and over, wondering if this is something he wants to decline. He needs to get back to his family. He needs to get back to help them. But so far, every option has been a bust. Heâs not sure how much longer he can go on for. It could be the apocalypse all over again. Stuck for 40 years, traveling none stop, unsure if heâll ever see his loved ones again. Could a good nights sleep really be such a bad thing?
He thinks the risk is worth it. âAs long as itâs not too much trouble for you.â
***
That one good nights sleep turned into three months, staying at Y/Nâs home, crashing on her couch. It didnât stop Five from going out, back to the subway, trying to find the possible solution to his six year problem. But the more time he spent with the woman, the less time he wanted to spend away from her. They grew closer, making meals together, gardening together, watching silly romcoms together. While Y/N taught Five how to bake, Five taught her how to fight. A young woman living by herself? It didnât hurt knowing some basic defence skills.
Five didnât want to admit it, but his family hadnât crossed his mind as often as it usually did before he met Y/N. Heâd become soft, wanting to be around her all the time, not wanting to visit the subway as often as he should be. Heâs lucky enough to call her a friend. He hopes she calls him that too.
***
Itâs late, and Y/N is sat on the couch, crocheting a few pairs of gloves and a long overdue jumper. People used to make fun of her for it, calling her an old lady, but she finds it soothing. And making your own clothes is a big bonus too. Five, or Jerome as she knew him, had been out most of the day. She never questioned what he was up to, only that he returned safe, ready for whatever sheâd cooked up for him during the day. She wasnât completely naive in thinking âJeromeâ has involved himself in shady business. But unless he plans on telling her, then she wonât bother pushing him on the matter.
A bang echos from the back of the house, specifically inside the geeenhouse. It makes Y/N jump up from her seated position, quickly rushing out to the source of the noise. It can only be one person, or thatâs what she hopes. Either way, she grabs for her shears before entering the warm glass room.
âJerome?â She whispers, watching her step, the only light in the room coming from the moon through the windows.
A muffled groaning reaches her ears, as Y/N blindly moves her hands over the walls, trying to find the light switch. She finally does, and flicks it on. A sharp gasp comes out of her mouth, as the brightness finally reveals her new friend curled in a ball on the floor, rolling in pain.
âShit.â
She quickly makes her way over to him, delicately wrapping her arms around his waist and slowly helping him off the floor. He stumbles, knocking into a few pots, almost making them fall off the table.
âSorry,â he mumbles, the word slurring under his breath.
âDonât apologise,â she says, making sure heâs steady on his feet. âLetâs just get you inside and onto the couch.â
They make their way through into the living room, Five dropping haphazardly onto the soft cushions, while Y/N finally gets a proper look at him. His clothes are ripped, the once pristine suit (one she bought for him as a gift) now in tatters. His hair is sticking up in all different directions, and heâs clutching to his side like his life depends on it. She reaches for his arm, prying it away to reveal an array of bullet wounds, still bleeding.
âYou should see the other guy,â Five jokes, tilting his head back and trying to forget about the burning pain running across his body. Funnily enough, if Y/N saw the other guy, heâd look exactly like him, considering this all happened due to an unfortunate run in with apocalypse Five.
Y/N stares at him with wide eyes. âReally? Look, I donât bother asking where you go or what youâre up to when you leave this house, but I think nowâs the time you tell me the truth.â
Five moves his head back down, looking her in the eyes. Sheâs terrified. And he hates that. He breathes in deep, taking her hand in his.
âIf you can help me patch this shit up,â he briefly motions to his wounds, âthen Iâll tell you who I really am.â
So thatâs what they do. Y/N retrieves the first aid kit from her bathroom, while Five opens up about his life before he met her, and how heâs not from this timeline. He isnât sure if sheâs believing what he says, as she remains quiet the entire time, only occasionally looking up at him and quickly returning to removing the bullets lodged in his side. But she listens. And allows him to pour his heart out to her.
âThe past six years were torture. Somehow worse than the forty I spent in the apocalypse.â Five turns his head and stares at the woman next to him, as she finishes up her work. âBut these last few months with you. I could finally be normal. I could live a life most guys would kill to have. And Iâm so sorry I lied to you this long.â
They fall into silence, the pair somehow closer together than they were a few minutes ago. Both emotionally, and physically. Y/N moves her hand and takes his, squeezing tightly. Fiveâs heartbeat picks up speed, only now noticing their close proximity.
âSo your real name is âFiveâ?â He nods at her words. She nods back. âHmm. It suits you a lot better than Jerome.â
They both laugh half heartedly, as they stare deeply into each otherâs eyes. She moves her hand up to his hair, moving it out of his face, trying to calm it down slightly.
She carries on talking. âI canât even begin to imagine what youâve been through.â Five rolls his eyes. She doesnât even know the half of it. âBut if I can be the person to keep you grounded, for however long youâre here for, then Iâm happy to do just that.â
Five smiles, glancing quickly at her lips.
She does the same. âAnd I hope youâre here for a long time.â
They both lean in, softly pressing their lips against each otherâs. Five cups her face, deepening the kiss as Y/N rests her arms atop his shoulders. They move in sync, careful not to cause any more damage to Fiveâs wounds, as she somehow moves closer, one of her legs wrapping itself around his waist.
They donât stop, clothes discarded, bodies intertwined, as their growing tension is finally broken. Five isnât sure if heâll ever get back to his timeline, but for now, heâs happy to call this place home.
***
Another four months, and still no sign of a way back. Although, Five canât deny he hasnât been trying as hard as usual. The peace and tranquillity has consumed him whole, falling into a proper routine with the woman heâŚ
Is it love? Could he truly fall for someone like this? Someone who isnât involved in the shit show heâs grown accustomed to? Someone who wants that quiet life, watering flowers and baking pies, with him? Maybe itâs what he needs.
Five stands in the greenhouse, picking some fresh strawberries, and trying a few to see if they were ripe. Heâs already found the perfect recipe to use them in. Something he knows sheâll love.
As if reading his thoughts, a pair of arms slip around his waist. Y/N rests her chin on his shoulder, peaking over to see the basket full of fresh fruit. She picks one up, moving away and popping it in her mouth. Five turns and looks at her, smiling wide.
âThey taste perfect,â she says.
Five takes her wrists, pulling her towards him and kissing her lightly. âSo do you.â
She laughs, holding him close and breathing him in. âThe cheesy lines donât work on me, bub.â
âI think they do.â He mumbles, bringing her in for another kiss, sliding his hands up and down her back.
They stay like this for a while, holding each other in the warm glass room. The sun starts to set, as Five looks out and realises what time it is.
âDamn.â
She looks at him, confusion on her face. âWhatâs up?â
He shakes his head. âNothing, I just need to do a double check of the subway before dinner.â
Y/N tries not to show her anxiousness, but some of it seeps through. After Five explained to her what the subway is and why he goes there every day, sheâs terrified at the thought of him leaving and never coming back. But she knows he wouldnât do that to her. Not without saying goodbye.
She steps back. âRight. Promise youâll be safe?â
He kisses her on the cheek. âI promise.â
***
Five spends some time looking around the platform in the subway, checking the lights, checking the maps, even poking his head into the tunnels to see if anything has changed. But nothing. It all remains the same. No sign of his past life waiting for him. Was that such a bad thing?
Holding a small flashlight, he shines it up and down, left and right, hoping his eyes will catch something new. A sudden pop from above startles him, the grip he had on the flashlight loosening. It falls and rolls onto the tracks. Five looks up, noticing one of the bulbs now flickering. He huffs, moving to the edge of the platform and jumping down. He retrieves the flashlight, hitting it a few times to try and get it to work again. It comes to life, flashing in front of him. Thatâs when he spots something.
âThatâs new.â
Five walks over, grabbing the mystery object and holding it up. Itâs a plain notepad. He flips it open, scanning over the messy handwriting inside. His messy handwriting. He canât help but let out a tiny gasp, as he figures out what it all means.
âThis is it.â Tears form in his eyes. âThis is my way back home.â
Heâs shocked. Heâs elated. Heâs emotionally drained. This is his chance to rejoin his timeline. To see his family after so long. To fix the mess theyâve created. But all he can think about in this moment is Y/N. How the hell is he supposed to break the news to her?
After another hour spent pondering this new found information, Five slowly makes his way back home. His home. Where the life heâd built was waiting for him.
He enters the house and walks into the kitchen, where Y/N stands by the stove, boiling something sweet and caramelly. Five just stares at her; humming a random tune, wiping her messy hands on the apron he bought for her when her old one accidentally caught fire. That was the most stress heâd felt since coming here. And if that was the only stress he had to deal with, heâd take it every single day.
She finally turns and spots him, smiling wide. âOh hey! I was worried for a sec, you were taking longer than expected.â
She moves closer to him, pulling him into a tight embrace. He holds her, not wanting to let go. Y/N can tell something isnât right.
She leans back. âYou okay?â
Five doesnât reply, only holding the notepad out for her to take. She does so, flipping through the pages just like he did, her expression perplexed.
âI donât understand-â
âItâs the way back to my timeline.â
She looks up at him, mouth slightly open, as her words fall short. Five can swear he hears her heartbeat speed up, as her breathing becomes erratic. Five isnât sure what to do, waiting for an explosion of emotions to rain down on him. But nothing comes. Neither of them do or say anything.
Five chooses to break the silence. âI donât wanna lose you. I canât. I donât think I could live the way I used to live. Not after living this life with you.â
Y/N bites her lip, suppressing a sob. âYou have to go.â
Five furrows his brow, hoping he heard her wrong. He tilts her head up to stare into her eyes, seeing the tears forming.
âNo,â he whispers. âYouâve become the most important thing in my life. The thought of never seeing you again, I canât do that.â
A tear falls down her cheek, as Five reaches out to wipe it away.
âIâd love nothing more than to stay in this little bubble weâve created,â she replies, finding it hard to keep her voice steady. âBut your family, your timeline, all those people? They need you more than I do. And I know deep down, you canât bear the thought of letting them die, knowing you couldâve helped.â
Five wants to ask her to come with him. Become apart of his family. He knows sheâd get on with them all. And theyâd all love her, possibly more than they love him. But he knows itâs cruel to ask her to leave her life behind. The house, the garden, the home that sheâs worked so hard on. And the thought of throwing her into the thick of it all. Putting her at danger? No chance.
He pulls her into his embrace, kissing her hard. They hold each other tight, their lips bruising as neither of them can stop the tears from falling.
Y/N is the first to pull away. âIf you ever get the chance to come back to this timeline, you know where to find me.â
Five smiles, not wanting to let her go. He kisses her once more. âIn the greenhouse, tasting just as sweet as the strawberries.â
lesson in words | s.r. x pregnant!fem reader
for some reason today, annabeth was not in the mood for her princess dresses or jelly shoes. she raised her voice when you were shuffling around her room, trying to find something appropriate for the aquarium. she didnât want her sage green pants, or her lavender plaid shorts, not even her scratchy sparkling pink skirt.
âi want these!â kicking her legs in the air to indicate her unicorn pajama pants. you just sighed, not wanting to indulge her antics, âhoney, those are house clothes. you sleep in those for a long time, theyâre not appropriate for a day out. now, whatâs our second choice?â leaning against her dresser with a fist beside your growing bump.
âunicorn! i want unicorn!â she jumped her body against her mattress, the springs creaking. a headache brewing behind your eyes, âannabeth diana reid,â you kept your voice stern and level, âif you canât pick out day clothes then we canât go to the aquarium. that means you canât see the stingrays for another month.â
she pouted as she crossed her small arms over her chest, her hectic bed head another part youâll have to deal with. âi hate you,â she said it mostly quiet, probably meant to be a whisper but doesnât understand how that works yet.
you pursed your lips while diverting your eyes to the floor, âwell iâm sorry you feel that way, but if you canât fix your attitude and change your clothes then you can stay in your room for the day.â leaving your daughter behind as you headed to your shared bedroom where your husband was tidying the space.
he turned when you stepped on a specific creaky spot, he greeted you with a smile that dropped when you assumed he saw your upset pout and wet eyes. âwhatâs wrong?â quick to hurry at your side with his hands caressing your elbows.
âhormones mostly,â sniffling, âand annabeth has decided to be stubborn today and says she hates me cause i wonât allow her to wear her pjs out the house.â spilling what happen in the last five minutes as fat tears collected on your lash line, one blink and they slid down your pregnancy cheeks.
âoh honey,â spencer leaned your head into his chest, neglected nails curling into his navy polo. one of his hands slid along the back of your head to keep you hidden while his other rubbed soothing circles between your shoulder blades. âshe doesnât actually mean it.â
âi know i know,â you sniffled as you moved to place your ear to his heart, âjust hurts having her say those words. she probably doesnât understand the extent of its meaning.â taking a deep sigh as you gathered yourself to lean away from spencer.
âwhy donât i go talk to her? try from a different perspective.â his warm palms rubbed at your upper arms as he stared softly into your wet eyes.
you sniffled, âshe is a daddyâs girl. listens to you more no matter what.â chuckling wetly when spencer just shrugged. he pecked a kiss to your forehead and guided you to the made bed, telling you to rest for now as he went to talk with your four year old.
spencer knocked gentle on her cracked door, âcan i come in?â both of you were making sure to teach the importance of knocking before entering a room. she almost caught the act of making her new siblings.
âyes,â she replied quietly. spencer slowly pushed open her decorated door, his head peaking in first before completely entering and closing them in.
his daughter lay in her bed, her flower comforter swallowing her. only a small lump shifting gave away her hiding spot, spencer took a seat at the foot of her twin.
he gave what felt like her calf a loving squeeze, âwanna come out and talk?â her small heel nudged into his knee, âno.â spencer could hear her pout.
âwhy not?â âcause i-i-i was a meanie to-to mommy,â annabeth began to hiccup through her words. spencer quickly pulled her sheets back and frowned at her rosy wet cheeks, along with a line of snot leaving her tiny nose.
âoh honey, come here.â spencer wrapped his arms behind her back as she threw hers around his neck. she crawled into his lap, her small legs stopping at his hips. âdo we feel bad about our earlier emotions?â spencer rubbed a large palm in soothing circles.
âye- yes. i-i want to see sti- stingrays, and i-i want to match with mo- my mommy.â her words a blubbering mess as she panicked over something small for the adults but other worldly for her child mind.
spencer cooed in her ear, âwhy donât we go apologize first. see if sheâll accept.â he felt annabeth nod in agreement. he carried her the short distance to the master bedroom where you were laying on your back as your palms rubbed your stomach and you stared at the ceiling.
you turned your head at a small knock, your face softening at the sight before you. âsomeone has something to say,â spencer said as he let annabethâs feet sit on the bed.
the young girl untangled from her fatherâs hold and slowly walked to sit beside you. you could hear her ragged inhales and frowned at her flushed face. âi- i- i am sorry for ye- yelling. i want to go to aquarium and you- you can help dress me, mo- mommy.â her tiny hands pulled at the helm of her sleep shirt.
you let a palm caress her warm cheek, âi was a little hurt when you said you hate me,â wanting to be truthful to your brilliant child.
her lip wobbled, âi- i didnât mean it. i lo- love you with my whole body.â something you say to her to show your complete extent of affections. âi heard that it was an unkind word, i- i re- regret saying it.â
âi know you do, honey.â pulling her into your chest for an awkward side hug. âletâs be mindful of our words, alright? theyâre very powerful.â petting down her hair, you felt her nod on your shoulder.
âare my two girls friends again?â spencer spoke up during the moment. he stayed near the edge of the room to give the both of you space.
you pressed a kiss into annabethâs temple, âi think so. what about you bethie, do you want to wear matching overalls today?â
her eyes peeked at your through clumped lashes, âcan- can we also do bows?â
you squeezed her side, âof course, bethie-boo.â
Part 9 (unrevised version). Since I've gotten 6 messages and a good bit of asks requesting to view it. Here it is, not in its final form.
You had hoped Monday would have treated you better than the past two days, but walking up to your shop in the pouring rain to already see a body standing outside waiting wasn't a good sign.
Customers who waited outside your shop always made you feel uncomfortable. But when you finally got close enough, you took in the person before you.
"We don't open for another hour." Your voice flat as you fished for your keys.
"I'll wait." Was Kyle's reply.
"Then you'll have to do it outside." You said, the key sliding into the lock. He didn't argue as you shut the door behind you. Didn't even bother knocking when, after thirty minutes, you looked in the window to see that the wind was causing the rain to blow sideways.
You relented. Letting him in thirty minutes earlier. It was a small mercy, even if he was soaked to the bone. You almost felt bad when his chattering teeth were the only thing you could hear.
Almost.
"I take it John told you about our little talk yesterday." You said, going about your business. Engaging in the conversation as if you were talking about the shitty weather that had tried to drown him.
"He did." He gave a sniffle. Running a hand over his beautiful, wet face. Droplets still staking their claim on his skin. "H-he alssso t-t-told us we were on our own in begging for our own f-forgiveness. Ra-ra- rightly s-s-s-so."
You huffed. Guilt beginning to eat at you before you turned, disappearing to the back of the store and coming back with a shirt and a blanket. "You left the shirt here."
He had no shame and wasted no time in taking off his jacket and soaked shirt. His chiseled body exposed to you. It was almost instinct to reach out and touch the soft skin. You luckily possessed some form of self restraint.
"So are you here to promise to make amends as well?" You crossed your arms. You meant it as a sign that you were wanting to create distance, but honestly you didn't trust yourself. It was second nature. Kyle and Johnny were tied when it came to having to always touch you.
Probably why his ghosting sucked so bad.
"I'd like to take you out." You couldn't help the laugh that escaped you. It wasn't until Kyle's face fell that you realized, "Oh, you're actually serious."
He opened his mouth, ready to no doubt give you the same exact promises of doing better that John had given you the day before. Fortunately for Kyle, you didn't have the time to entertain a conversation.
"Fine." You immediately relented. No argument. "That Indian place where I asked you to go four months ago. Seven. If you manage to figure out which place, then I'll be meeting you there. Otherwise you'll be eating alone."
Kyle stood still. Unprepared for the fact that you had... agreed. You actually agreed to let him take you out.
"I can pick you up."
"Not sure what time I'll be getting off today. Might go home first. Might just go straight there." You started opening tasks again. "I have to finish setting up. Seven sharp.
"Seven sharp." He repeated, his smile lighting up the room.
It made you feel sick.
It was 6:45 when your phone started ringing. It was Kyle. Confirming that he was at the restaurant you were supposed to go.
7:00. He had gotten the two of you a table. He'll go ahead and order you a drink. They had mango lassi, but wasn't sure if you wanted to stick to just water.
7:15 He tries calling you. When it goes to voicemail, a follow up text is sent asking if you're okay.
At 7:20, while sitting on the couch you text back. Sorry. Something came up. We'll reschedule, I promise.
If you knew giving them a taste of their own medicine felt so good, you would have done it ages ago. You felt no since of shame in sending it. You hated being petty, but you wanted them to know what it felt like.
John had a lot more of verbal outbursts coming his way and if Johnny was hoping for a chance, he would be lucky if you had sex with him again before marriage.
Ten minutes later, on the dot, there was a knocking on your door. Your food had arrived. Blindly, you opened the door. Only instead of the take out you had delivered, Kyle stood there. Yet again soaked to the bone and this time out of breath.
"How did you know I was here?" Was the first thing that had come into your mind. If anything, he would have went by the shop first, but no. He came here. You weren't the type to deviate from a schedule, but christ. Simon at your date and then the club. John at the shop on your day off. Now this. "I swear to fucking god this fucking stalking-"
"Easy now, Love. No one's stalking you." Bullshit.
Absolute bullshit. They were military. Really important and special connections type of military, but this was bullshit. They were keeping tabs on you somehow.
"I know for a fucking fact that place is only ten minutes away. So you didn't have time to check out my store-- where I should be-- before coming here. So I'm going to ask you again, how did you know I was here?"
"Okay," he shrugged. "Stalking. We're stalking you." Kyle was lying. We he nodded like a bobblehead, you knew whatever was coming out of his mouth was bullshit. The first time you confirmed it was after Johnny had volunteered to make haggis. Kyle told him it was good, no doubt hoping to spare his feelings.
"Kyle." You warned, eyes narrowed and teeth clenched. He paused as if trying to form another lie, but coming up short. Sighing in defeat, he confessed.
"Blocking us didn't stop you from sharing your location." In that moment, you could have strangled him. They had been still using your location. Something you had given them as a way to find you if you ever needed help. Now those assholes were using it for their own benefit.
"Son of a-" you shut your mouth. "I can't do this with you right now, okay?" You didn't confess that your publisher had asked for a last minute zoom call in the middle of your busiest work hour to see how you felt about doing a few meet and greets, all expenses paid.
Good news, but still... overwhelming. You still felt like an imposter. That you didn't deserve the hype you were getting. Your story wasn't that good. Your characters didn't hold much depth.
"Everything okay?" You didn't want to tell him. Didn't want to give him the chance to offer the reassurance you desperately needed for something he had no idea about.
"Why?" You asked, changing the subject. "I just want to know why? With John I get that the job gets stressful and needing someone to take-"
"No," he finished. "That's not an excuse. It's a reason. Not an excuse." His jaw clenched. "There is no excuse for how any of us treated you."
"Then what was your reason?" you asked. "I'm finding it very hard that someone who quite actively avoided me suddenly wants to get back together."
"I slacked off?" He shrugged. "I figured there were four of us and if I wasn't able to be there, it wouldn't make a difference."
"If you're just going to lie, Kyle, there is no point in continuing this conversation." You go to close the door only for his hand to stop you.
He stands there, looking at the ground. Even from the this angle you can see him take his bottom lip between his teeth.
He's nervous.
You step back. Giving him the option of coming in and saying it is whatever it is he needs to stay. He may be an ass like the rest of them, but this isn't exactly a conversation you want to have in the hallway for your nosey neighbors to hear.
He takes the silent invitation. Walking in and not speaking until you click the door shut. "You want the truth?" His voice is soft, but there is something else behind it. Anger?
"No," you say sardonically. "Please. Lie to me." He sighed, but didn't say anything. You were exhausted. The past few days had been a back-to-back rollercoaster of emotions. You were drained. You didn't have it in you for this right now. "Kyle-"
"I thought you only kept asking because you felt bad for me." He said the words so quickly, it took you a moment to process them. He thought.... you felt bad for him? "Like you were still trying to include me even if you didn't want to."
"Why?" Was the only thing you could come up with. You didn't have the energy to try to come up with your own reasoning for his admission.
"Don't think I don't know how I am compared to the them." He scoffed. You always knew the hierarchy of their work, even if you didn't know all the details. John was at the top. Captain and head bitch in charge. Simon was the lieutenant with Johnny and Kyle as Sergeants. Kyle was the youngest of the group by two years, but still. What was there to compare?
"So you're not a Captain or Lieutenant?" you shrug. "Johnny is the same rank as you. And you are the youngest and I'm sure with time you'll get to a position-"
"Black!" He said. "I'm black. I am the only fucking black guy not only in this relationship. I'm the only black guy in the 141, in the unit."
When it came to Kyle, black was the last thing you thought of. You thought of his soft brown eyes or house his hands felt so smooth against your body. How his smile could light up the room and how beautiful, how head-turning gorgeous he was. "I'm just an after thought in everything else regarding the 141, why would you be any different?"
"Ky," you were going to be sick. Was this how he really felt? With you? With the others? With work? "You know I don't feel that way, right?"
"Do you remember that time we went out? That french place?" How could you forget. The maĂŽtre d' had asked Kyle to put a card on a tab before the two of you were even seated. At first you thought it was preposterous. Why would you make patrons at a fine dining restaurant do that? This wasn't a pub for Christ sakes. Kyle told you not to worry about it and handed over a card.
The two of you never went back.
"Oh my god." It dawned on you. "When they asked for your card..."
"I..." he sucked in a breath. Trying to keep his composure. "It was fucking humiliating. I was a man dressed to the fucking nines with a gorgeous girl on my arm and before I even got the chance to blow my money, I was treated like I couldn't afford it. It wasn't because of what I was wearing or who I was with. It was because of me. Of who I was. Who I am."
"Kyle," words escaped you. Nothing in that moment to reassure him that it never dawned on you. That it stupidly never dawned on you how there were times that people did look at him different. You wanted to tell him that it didn't matter. That you were just as important and lovable and respectable as the others. That you loved him just as much. Words failed you. All you could say say was, "I'm so sorry."
He swallowed, before taking in harsh breath through his nose. "It's not an excuse. I got wrapped up in my own stupid fucking head about how other people looked at me, I forgot it only mattered how you did."
"And you did." You said, aching to reach out. To touch him. Offer some comfort. Hating that he ever felt like he wasn't enough. Knowing the feeling all too well. Even if he was the one to make you feel it. "You did matter to me."
"I know." He said. You were thankful he said it clearly. Not shrugging his shoulders or nodding his head as he spoke. "I'll do anything to matter to you again." He took your hands in his, even though they had ached to hold you closer. But he knew not to test his luck. "If you want to press restart and let's take it back to the very beginning, I'll do that. I will court you and woo you and make you fall in love with me all over again because I will never fall out with you. I can't."
You weren't prepared for this. You had prepared to leave Kyle waiting in a restaurant alone. Now your heart ached in your chest at the idea of letting him ever think he wasn't enough because of the color of his skin.
"It doesn't have to be now or tomorrow or next week or next fucking month." He squeezed your hands the same way had John had. With the exact same intensity and promise. "Just let me try again. I won't let you down this time. I'll put in the work."
"I don't want you to feel like you have to work to make this relationship work, Kyle." You protest, wanting to pull your hands away. Free from the spell his touch had seem to be putting you under.
He smiled. Not enough to show off his teeth, but enough where have of his face lifted up. "It's not the type of work with long hours and a shit commute. Loving you is the same kind of work an artist puts into making a masterpiece. Pouring everything into it and getting something beautiful in return."
Before you could comprehend it, your face was wet. "Kyle." Your lips quivered, a sob threatening to come out. "I never felt like I needed to spend time with you, Ky." You sniffled. "I fucking wanted to. I missed you." You were so close. You needed to reel it in. Get it together.
"I just didn't understand how you could." His confession broke any restraint you had. Your hand flew to your mouth, trying to subdue your cries. When Kyle pulled you to his chest, his arms wrapping around you, you allowed yourself to crumble.
Not even for yourself, but for him.
For the kind heart you now knew broke with every sideways glance from passer-byes. For the hateful and prejudice world you lived in and for how they could overlook such a wonderful man just because of something as basic as the color of his skin.
You weren't sure how long you stood crying. You weren't certain if the knock on the door behind him actually happened or something your mind had conjured to try and pull you from your fit.
Eventually you did pull away from him. Your face covered in snot and tears. Seeing that you still were in need of it, Kyle pulled you back to him, only this time your face wasn't buried into his shirt.
You stood there. His arms wrapped around your back while yours found their home around his waist.
"I used to love when you would come back to my place directly from base as soon as you got back from a deployment." You said, breaking the silence. "I would be waiting like a kid on Christmas waiting to see what trinket made you think of me. You made me feel like even though we were so far away, you still thought about me."
"Always." He said, before his lips pressed against the top of your head. "Not a day I didn't miss being here with you."
The two of you eventually settled down on the couch. Both on opposite ends with a hot cup of tea in your hands and the array of take out containers half empty. You had planned for a night of eating your feelings so there was luckily enough food for two.
"I don't want to say no." You admitted. "But I need time. Before I even think about saying yes to all of this again."
"Not all of this," he reminded. "Just me. I'm doing my part in groveling, let the others figure it out. Or at least that's just what Price told us. Although you would be doing all of us a favor if you talked to Johnny?" Your ears perked up. You hadn't seen or heard from Johnny since Friday.
"What's wrong with Johnny?" You asked.
"Lad didn't cope well with you going on your date." Not that you had fucked him and said it was a mistake.... or maybe he kept that tidbit to himsle.f
"It wasn't a-" you started.
"I know," he said. "Simon happened to be nearby." You shot him a look, letting him know you weren't buying that lie, before he continued. "But he didn't. Fuck you're lucky we were able to drag him out of your apartment before you got back and he made an even bigger fool of himself."
"What are you talking about?" You asked. "What do you mean by drag?"
"Johnny called Simon. Told him you were on a date and to bring your ass back. Although you had made it a point to fuck him and leave-- absolutely no judgement, by the way-- he was going to make it a point to never leave your bed."
"My top sheet..." You had come home to your comforters and pillows on the floor. When making up your bed, the top sheet was missing. You had just assumed you didn't put it on or maybe it was in the wash.
"Refused to put his clothes back on. Me and John couldn't risk carrying a naked, screaming Scot through the streets without making a spectical. So we rolled him up and carried him of like a rug. A very heavy, squirmy rug."
"Oh," your hand flew to your chest. "Johnny." He was the bleeding heart of the group so you weren't exactly surprised. He was also the one who blew up shit, so he was definitely one for dramatics. "So that's how Simon figured out about dinner. But the drinks-"
"Whenever Simon is home, he's your shadow. The only time we don't worry about you is when we know he's with you." That made you roll your eyes.
"You act like he's my guard dog."
"He is."
"Is not." You defended, your conversation from Saturday night coming back to you.
"You're not my body guard, Simon." You snapped.
"Not trying to be," he said. "I was never trying to be."
"He's not." you said again.
"You're right." Kyle relented, shrugging his fucking shoulders.
"You're saying that like you're just not trying to argue with me." He took a sip of your tea. "Kyle!" He sighed before looking at you as if the last thing he wanted to do was continue on the subject.
"He is." He said. "Your guard dog."
"I mean he protects me, but all of you do." He shakes his head, a huff of air going out of his nose, almost amused.
"Not like Simon." He admits it almost as if he were ashamed. "I want to say something." He said it as if he were preparing you for the next words to come out of his mouth would change the course of the night. "I need to say it because it would make me less of a man and even less of a friend if I didn't. But I don't want you to hate me or yourself for it."
Why would you hate yourself for it?
"Fine." you agreed, giving him permission to continue. "I won't hold it against you."
"You were always the one to coordinate things to do. One-on-one dates. Helping John with paperwork when shit got to crazy and you were the only one the uptight asshole would let touch his files." You gave a small smile remembering how John had barked at a recruit to get the fuck out of his office before peppering you with kisses at your arrival. Giving small pecks of appreciation as he explained what he needed you to do and how to do it.
"Helping me after my shoulder injury and staying on my ass about the physical therapy."
"Well someone had to." You countered.
"This past Christmas when Johnny needed to get his sisters gifts so you made a whole day out of it going to see lights and ice skating." Johnny was the proud owner of a freshly bruised tailbone after landing flat on his ass and swearing off skating for the rest of his life. Feckin' ice.
"Okay?" You asked, not really sure where Kyle was headed for this. He had pointed out what a good girlfriend you were, had been. How you had always tried to be helpful and do whatever needed to help your boys out.
He stopped. He looked at you as if he were debating to tell you what he had warned you about. He looked down at the floor before taking his bottom lip in between his teeth.
"Fuck." He muttered.
"Spit it out, Kyle!" You whined, now clueless to what point he was trying to make by all the examples of what a good girlfriend you had been.
He looked at you with the same solemness that a friend looked at another friend before having to call them out on their shit, knowing that the pill they were about to be given would be a hard one to swallow.
"You never did that with Simon."
