Thought Week: Alphys

It's weird how Alphys ended up tying with Toriel in the initial poll. I didn't expect those two to be so close to each other in terms of popularity. How intriguing.

First Impressions

Like Undyne, I don't remember where I first saw her. I didn't really see her in comic dubs. Maybe Fishy Love, since I saw that pretty early on? But I think I watched playthroughs before I saw Fishy Love... So I'll just go with that.

Like a lot of other characters, I didn't really think much of her. "Wow, smart nerd scientist with no social skills, such character archetype, wow." But when I learned more about her, I began to appreciate the twist on that whole archetype. Like, she doesn't have low self-esteem just because she's a nerd or because she's socially awkward, it's a result from a very tragic event that SHE caused unwillingly. I began to really like how flawed she is, with this being a reason for a lot of bad things that she does in the game. She's not really a bad person, but she does a lot of bad things, and from a character standpoint, I love that.

My Impressions Now

She. Is. So. INTRIGUING! I love her morally grey character, it's so interesting!

Sure, I, too, found her constant phone calls annoying... But looking back, it's a pretty funny moment. I don't know, it just really suits her character as this socially awkward dweeb, you know?

So, anyway, let's get into her morally-grey... ness. Her lies. HER CONSTANT LIES. This woman can be a master of manipulation, really! Like if you need a liar, she's actually pretty decent at it. Has anyone seen the twist at the end of the Hotland arc coming? Because I definitely didn't!

The Hotland Arc... Ah, yes. When she put a child in mortal danger several times for the sake of being a "hero" for them. And she did it for completely selfish reasons too. I'm not going to defend her, because honestly, that is a MAJOR jerk move. I can understand why some people hate her. But, well... To me, it just makes her more interesting. If it weren't for that, then she would just be another "socially-awkward nerd" character, but this added some more depth to her. I like how it deconstructs that sort of archetype in a really twisted way.

The Narrative

And I wish she was more touched upon too.

SO IMPORTANT. SO SO IMPORTANT. YOU KNOW SHE'S THE REASON FLOWEY EXISTS, RIGHT???? THE REASON WE EVEN KNOW ABOUT DETERMINATION, RIGHT???? SHE'S THE REASON!!!!

Conclusion

Seriously, though, Alphys' importance cannot be stated enough. Her actions in the True Lab created a serious domino effect in the grand scheme of things. Let's see. First, she was the one who discovered DT. Determination, you know, human physical strength substance, the delicious soul strengthener, the time reset nom noms... That can also melt monsters. Fun for the whole family! Her experiments answered the question, "hEy, WhY cAn'T mOnStErS jUsT iNjEcT tHeMsElVeS wItH dEtErMiNaTiOn?" BECAUSE THEY MELT! So, thank you, Alphys, for explaining that! Thanks for the trauma! Also, thanks for explaining Undyne's neutral death and Undying form, that would've been a big plot hole otherwise.

Oh, yeah, and then there's Flowey, who ended up becoming the first "anomaly" that we know of (the humans are ambiguous). And we all know what Flowey's existence led to, right?

Overall, Alphys is one of the most intriguing characters in the game to me, and I think she deserves more recognition.

main take aways from Halloween (1978) rewatch:

outside of the fact that everyone who has sex is murdered by the narrative, this is a surprisingly chill portrayal of female sexuality? these teen girls are horny and actively enjoying Getting It On with their boytoys. no pushy boyfriends sneaking in through their bedroom windows--these ladies are taking the initiative to sneak out and GET SOME. one of them gets laid and then immediately orders her boyfriend to get her a beer. (yes she gets Slashered soon afterward, but so does the boyfriend so honestly, gender equality.) yes the Final Girl is the only one not having sex, but she's not bullied for that, nor are her friends slut shamed except possibly by being murdered by the narrative

actually the only character who is shown being morally condemned on-screen is michael myers. specifically FOR his violent overreaction to other people's sex lives. (people he is spying on). metaphorically, the villain is American Puritanism sticking its judgy nose into other people's business.

but actually the real villain is the doctor. guy's a judgemental, shaming, pathologizing asshole. and he's been in charge of michael's care since he was SIX YEARS OLD? kid never had a chance. i'd go on a killing spree too

also the parents. where are the parents? it's halloween night and all the teenage girls are home babysitting their younger siblings? come to think of it, michael's first victim was his own older sister, whom he killed while she was babysitting him. teen girls are really shouldering a labour burden here. maybe parentification is the true villain

side note: mike commits his first murder wearing a clown costume...which is never referenced again? his 'iconic' costume is a generic mask and wig and jumpsuit, when we coulda had a Killer Clown Michael Myers??? travesty

i like how the Final Girl and her friend casually smoke weed in her car. yeah she's an honor student and her friend is the sheriff's daughter. yeah they smoke weed. so what it's 1978

(to reiterate, mike is 21 and should be at the club. im not saying he shouldn't be rampaging, im saying it's sad that he broke out, tasted freedom for the first time in his life, and immediately snuck back into his childhood home to go rampaging. let's have a remake where he goes to a nightclub and has a few beers. maybe some slutty dancing. then rampage)

can i just say it felt so fucking GOOD to have good, well-executed, fast-paced (!!) lightsaber fight choreography. the fights were exciting! each character had their own distinct style that matched their abilities and size! they were fast!!!!!! hands down the best saber fights we’ve seen in live-action sw in a long time.

having seen at least the rough outlines of all the romances now I have to say that I think emmrich's is probably objectively the best in terms of coherence and completeness of story arc (with the understanding that ultimately the 'best' romance is whichever one makes YOUR heart sing anyway so objectivity is a silly thing to claim that way, it just felt like it's the arc with the most well-paced focused content and the least dangling threads)... but lucanis' is my favourite haha. just. the whole kneeling before your beloved full of reverence but without any of the distance that usually implies??? his complete undramatic certainty and calm in every scene with rook after this, having spent the whole game caught between fear and longing???? mr. lives in a pantry but it says nothing about my psyche don't worry about it it's purely for tactical reasons that I keep myself contained in a small dark room not entirely unlike a cell, love among the parsnips -- finally coming to rook in their room and it's so comfortable and comforting???? after all the times rook supports and comforts him through the game he's finally able to return the same to them when they need it while being so calm and steady and it's so fucking sweet and feels so effortless and with no price attached?????? he basically assigns himself the role of your bodyguard and he WILL stab a god over it??????????????? the turn to protector (which was in his heart all along longing to get out and find a place) of it all????? he sounds like he's found himself unexpectedly stumbling into such a soul-lightening state of revelatory existential relief, full on 'you only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves' mary oliver style, and he goes and he shares that with rook and protectively envelops them in it when they're hurting??????????????????????????? hello for the maker's sake hello can anyone hear me?????
