hi ho dear friend
PLS TELL ME ABOUT GHOSTBUSTERS NSBU AU
also girls night
fascinated by all of them tho
YIPPEE
girl’s night is part of my pibe urban fantasy au. it’s jenny, kirsten, vanessa, and brittany hanging out and having a sleepover!! why is it urban fantasy au you ask? i truly don’t know rn. maybe it won’t be. also ft jenny+tyler siblinghood bc i am who i am
nsbu ghostbusters au is my current child of a fic (and the ghostbusters au ive been referring to the past few days) !!
dave’s video world isn’t really a video store, nor is it really going out of business — in reality, it’s a coverup for a ghost hunting business. it functions similarly to how the store itself works in relation to the cast and their positions — usha manages the finances, russell deals with the equipment and upkeep, paula handles security while they’re out, dang takes their calls and goes out when needed, and liv + wendell are the ones actually hunting the ghosts. why they made the teenagers do it, we’ll never know. mostly silly goofy awesome action heroes friendship, but things slowly start to turn more… sinister, as monsters seem to lurk around every corner and darkness creeps into lake elsinore. something feels… weird about dave’s video world… and maybe even dave himself…?
it’s also still a wip so like idk maybe none of that will end up being true but that’s what i have rn!! snippet under the read more btw
Really, Liv doesn’t know why they’re making the literal teenagers be the ones to go out and fight the ghosts. At least half of her coworkers are full adults, have been adults far longer than her barely-legal status — she turned eighteen a whole month ago — and are probably a little more qualified to carry around the ghost… sucking… tube she currently has strapped to her back. Dang’s crash course before sending her and Wendell out had been… enlightening, even if not remarkably informative.
She hadn’t signed up for the job. Or, well, she had, but all the questions on the dinky little website she’d pulled up on her laptop in the school library a week before graduation had been about, like, regular job stuff. All she’d expected was a normal summer job, with normal hours and normal coworkers. Instead, she finds herself lying to her parents about where she is on weekends — she hasn’t stayed in touch with a single person she’s told them she’s spending the night with — and worrying about whether or not she’s going to get literally possessed. She’s pretty sure she was supposed to sign a waiver.
How is any of this meant to go on a resume?

who you gonna call? (winchesters!) ~ k. br.
a/n: raaaahhh happy SuA day!!! a little late on the international end of things but it's better late than never, right? anyways enjoy this fic, I had so much fun writing it that I may get back into watching supernatural. :) also the title is based on an edit of the winchesters brothers to 'ghostbusters' by ray parker jr!
I normally don't do a separate trigger warning for specific triggers, but since this is the first time that a piece of work has touched on such a serious topic, I wanted to put a big disclaimer out there. There is a scene in the fic where suicide is discussed as a possible cause of death. There's isn't any more graphic of a description than the word being thrown around once or twice; however, I feel it is my responsibility as an author to inform you of this. That being said, if you or a loved one are struggling, here's a list of international suicide hotlines that can help you if you need them. take care of yourselves, my loves, and remember that you all are beloved by me. ❤️
tw: BRIEF MENTION OF SUICIDE, main character death, lots of blood and gore in this one, not accurate to the Supernatural episode (Season 1, Episode 5) that it is based on, reader's parents died at an early age, it's a mixed bag of angst, fluff, and hurt/comfort with an open ending
summary: after one of the worst nights of your life, a pair of "reporters" roll into town and ask you questions about your dead friend. unfortunately, one of the girls, SuA, is a bit too charming for her own good. your curiosity towards the girl brings you closer to her, and it brings SuA closer to solving your friend's death, as well as the death of your parents.

“Bloody Mary, Bloody Mary, Bloody-”
“Stop!” You cry out before shutting your eyes. “Don’t do this!”
“You know it’s not real, right?” Ryujin looks at you as concern laces into her voice. “We can leave, if you’re uncomfortable-”
“You’re both chickens!” Yuna teases you before turning back to the bathroom mirror. “O’ spooky mirror ghost, tell these losers to go back home!”
She cackles as you open your eyes and place a steady hand on the counter.
“Yuna, I’m sorry, I can’t do this.” You bite your lip as tears start to form in your eyes.
Yuna’s smile immediately fades as she pushes Ryujin aside to pull you into a hug.
“I’m so sorry! I was just playing around, and I didn’t mean to make you cry.” She whines before placing her head on your chest. “Please forgive me!”
With pleading eyes, Yuna looks like a wounded puppy as you gently comb your fingers through her hair.
“It’s alright, Yuna,” You reassure her as your free hand wraps around her side, “I know you didn’t mean any harm. I’ve just been sensitive to these things since people started spreading those haunting rumors after my parents died.”
“Those people are assholes,” Ryujin injects, “and you shouldn’t pay them any mind.”
Yuna bobs her head up and down before letting you out of her arms.
“That’s why you’ve got us!” She proudly says before looking in the mirror. “We’ll protect you from anything, ghost-related or not.”
You let go of Yuna before heading towards the bathroom door.
“Thank you, to the both of you.” You wipe away the tears that threaten to fall as Ryujin grabs your hand and guides you away from the bathroom.
“C’mon, I’ll make you some hot chocolate and we can talk about those cute girls you’ve been seeing at college.” She teases as you smile back at her.
“Girls? What girls?” You play dumb, which causes Ryujin to laugh.
“You know exactly what I mean.”
Your other hand catches the door frame as you look back at Yuna.
“You coming?”
“In a minute!” She gleefully says as you remove your hand from the doorway.
A second later, and it would’ve been crushed by Yuna slamming the door shut. You allow Ryujin to drag you to the kitchen as your thoughts begin to wander.
It’s silly to believe those rumors, right? Maybe I should be brave like Yuna and face them head on.
~
After Yuna slams the door shut, she turns the light off and grabs the candle from the sink. With a spare match that she stowed away in her pocket, she lights the candle and sets it back onto the counter.
Yuna looks at herself in the mirror, locking eyes with the reflection that looks back at her, as she smiles to herself.
“It’s just a child’s game - what harm could it do?”
She leans close to the mirror before whispering, “Bloody Mary.”
A single shiver runs up her spine - fear? adrenaline? panic? fate?
She sighs to herself.
This is stupid.
“Bloody Mary.” Her voice rings out again, and this time, the candle wavers in the wind.
Yuna looks out to the window in the bathroom, but it isn’t wide open or slightly cracked. It’s completely shut, with no holes to be seen.
A new shiver runs down her spine - this one she identifies as pure terror.
What’s going on?
“Bloody Mary.”
The words leave her lips before she can stop herself. Yuna immediately turns on the lights and looks around.
There’s nothing here - you’re just a scaredy-cat!
She breathes out before wiping a tear from her eye.
I must’ve really scared myself if I started crying.
She looks down at her hand, expecting to see nothing but a teardrop, but she sees blood.
Her blood.
A scream is caught in her throat, threatening to escape as she looks in the mirror.
This time, she sees blood falling from both of her eyes, and a shadowy figure in the back.
A woman.
Bloody Mary.
~
You grab the warm mug from Ryujin’s hands before taking a sip of the hot chocolate. Like an impatient child, you take a sip and are immediately reminded why doing so is a terrible idea. You quickly set the mug back down as the liquid in your mouth is scolding your tongue and throat as it travels down to your stomach.
“Fuck,” You wipe your lips, “that’s hot.”
“It’s hot chocolate, you know.” She nudges your arm before taking a seat next to you in the dining room.
You roll your eyes as she laughs at her own bad joke.
“Thanks, Einstein.”
Her mug sits on the table, right next to yours, as her hand grabs your arm.
“How’s college life? Meet anyone special?”
“Not yet. I’m focused on my studies.” You shrug off her nosiness, but Ryujin’s persistent.
“You can’t just spend the rest of your life slaving away at work, you know.”
“You can’t just spend the rest of your life working at a shitty cafe, Ryujin.” You mimic her voice as she loudly gasps.
“Excuse you! My caramel macchiatos are anything but shitty!”
You both laugh before falling into a comfortable silence.
Her fingers run up and down your arm, and you find comfort in the gesture. She’s been your closest friend since your parents died, back during your first year of high school. Through her, you met Yuna, her neighbor and childhood best friend, who had the biggest house on the block.
It was easy to escape the pain of being in a home with no parents when you could simply spend every night at a friend’s house. It wasn’t like their parents complained - you all got decent grades and stayed out of trouble, so what was the harm?
“It was nice of Yuna to offer her house to me since I’m in town for the week.” You say, as Ryujin nods.
“Her house is always open to me. The benefits of being neighbors, I suppose.” She looks over to the hallway where the bathroom is. “Yuna, come out here before your hot chocolate gets cold! I don’t want to hear any complaints if it already is!”
You laugh before looking out to the hallway.
“That’s odd. She’d usually have some sort of smartass comment to say by now.” You glance at Ryujin, who seems perplexed by Yuna’s odd behavior.
“You’re right. She’s never this quiet. Do you want to check in on her, or should I do so?”
“I’ll do it.” You quickly get out of your chair and head towards the bathroom.
“Yuna!” You call out to her as you slowly approach the bathroom door. Nearly every light in the house is on, yet you feel some sort of darkness around you.
C’mon, Yuna, now is not the time for jokes.
“Yuna, please come out! Ryujin and I, we’re worried about you!” You stop before the door, fist raised to knock against it.
You knock once, twice, thrice.
No response.
“Yuna, please!” Your voice becomes more desperate as you continue to knock. “This isn’t funny!”
You try to open the door, you’re past the social politeness of knocking in case she’s taking care of private business. You’re worried that she slipped and fell, or maybe she hurt herself and didn’t want to say anything-
A key. There has to be a key somewhere.
You look down to see if you can spot a key, but your eyes widen at the sight in front of you.
Blood soaks into your shoes and the carpet below your feet.
You shriek in terror.
“What’s wrong?” Ryujin races around the corner as you start sobbing.
“Call an ambulance! I think Yuna’s, she’s-”
You choke on your own tears as Ryujin scrambles to find her phone to call for help.
Your mind can’t help but to make a terrible comparison, one that you thought you would never have to relive.
This was exactly how you found your parents, all those years ago.
~
“Mom! Dad!” You call out from your bedroom. “You guys forgot to turn off the hallway light!”
You tightly hug your stuffed rabbit as you wait for one of your parents to respond. They were the two people you trusted most in the world, even though you were a young teenager.
Making friends didn’t come easy to you, especially not in high school, when most of the friend groups had already been decided.
You did talk to this one girl in your math class - Ryujin - but she was more of a study buddy than anything. A friend that simply saw you as a means to an end.
How tragic.
“Mom! Dad!” You call out for them again, wait for a response, and then get out of bed. “I wanted to stay curled up in bed, but I can’t do that when you guys are ignoring me!”
You sigh before putting on your slippers and trudging towards the hallway.
You exit your bedroom and turn to the left as you find the lightswitch with ease. That, however, isn’t what peaks your interest.
It’s the steady stream of a red liquid coming from the master bathroom.
“Mom…” You trail off before walking towards the door. “Dad?”
As you approach, a metal tang hits your nose. It isn’t any red liquid - it’s blood.
~
Red and white lights consume your vision as you sit on the steps of the front porch. In the distance, you can hear Ryujin talking with one of the paramedics, but it all feels like white noise to you.
Could it really be? Could the same entity that killed my parents really have done this to Yuna?
It’s all a jumble of lights, endless questioning, and paranoia until a hand meets your shoulder.
You look up at Ryujin, who tries to give you a forced smile.
“What did they say?” You softly ask as Ryujin takes a seat next to you.
“They think it was a stroke, or some other heart condition. That’s the only thing that could’ve caused her eyes to be like that.”
“Her eyes were liquified, just like my parents.” You quietly say. “Paramedics said they died of strokes, too.”
“But I don’t get it. Yuna ate healthy, exercised regularly, and didn’t seem stressed at all. That’s why they’re looking into suicide as a cause of death too.”
“You can’t be serious, Ryujin,” You glare at her. “Suicide?”
“We never really know what’s going on in someone’s head.” She shrugs before letting her head fall between her knees. “How are we going to tell her family about this? We should’ve been in there with her, maybe we could’ve caught the signs sooner-”
You lean your head against her shoulder and offer her a bit of comfort.
“Trust me, dreading the past doesn’t help at all.”
“What are we supposed to do, then?”
When Ryujin lifts her head to meet your eyes, she hides her face in a valiant effort to hide her red eyes and quiet sniffles. You gently rub circles into her back as she grabs your shoulders and pulls you closer to her.
“We grieve, we remember, and we move forward with our lives.”
~
“Hustling for pool money again?” Siyeon asks, not daring to lift her eyes from the newspaper.
“Uh-huh.” SuA tosses a stack of cash on the bar table. “What do you think?”
“That it’s better than the credit card scams, but worse than an actual job.” Siyeon bluntly says before SuA grabs a chair, spins it around, and takes a seat.
“Think what you want, but it’s money and it’s right there.” She proudly smiles before looking at Siyeon. “Speaking of jobs, have you found anything?”
“This might interest you.” Siyeon grabs a pen and circles an article in the paper before tossing it to SuA.
“What am I looking at?”
“A girl from a prominent family died about a month ago. Shin Yuna was her name.” Siyeon explains.
“What’s so special about her that requires our… unique expertise?”
“Read the autopsy report in the paper. Her eyes were completely liquified, and they found most of the blood in her body within her skull. They claim that her cause of death was a stroke.”
“No shit.” SuA bites her lips as her eyes gloss over the page. “Are we dealing with a pissed-off spirit, a deranged vampire, or something else?”
“I say that we give it a look before those men over there get mad at you for your hustling.” Siyeon grabs her jacket as SuA takes a sip of beer from the stein in front of her.
“Hustling is an underappreciated art form.” SuA argues before putting on her leather jacket. “Let’s go.”
Siyeon shrugs before grabbing the newspaper from SuA.
“Let’s go.”
~
“This feels wrong.” Siyeon raises her fist to the door before looking back to SuA’s ‘67 Chevy Impala. “Are you sure there isn’t anyone else we can talk to first?”
“Family and next of kin is always the best source.” SuA adjusts the aviators on her face as she admires her reflection in a side view mirror. “We have to rule out witchcraft and demonic possession, just so we can be sure that we’re dealing with a pissed-off spirit.”
“Yuna’s family… her parents have been through enough. Should we really not start anywhere else?” Siyeon’s hesitation causes SuA to sigh and walk towards the house.
“Where has this hesitation come from? It’s not like you.” SuA places her sunglasses on the top of her head before knocking on the door.
Siyeon crinkles her nose in disapproval before moving to the side.
“Mr. and Mrs. Shin, a moment of your time!” SuA calls out while banging on their front door.
She stops for a moment and waits for an answer, but no one responds or comes to the door.
“They must be out of town.” Siyeon shrugs before watching SuA grab a bobby pin from her hair. “Don’t tell me you’re going to-”
“You said they weren’t home,” She argues, “and we have to learn about our victim one way or another.”
She places one knee on the ground as she lowers herself to be eye-level with the door. One hand grabs the door knob while the other takes the bobby pin and begins to mess with the lock and-
Easy does it, baby.
“Hey, I’m pretty sure trespassing is illegal in all parts of the world!” A voice yells, which breaks SuA’s concentration.
Startled, she launches herself to her feet before Siyeon walks backwards and falls into SuA, sending them both to the ground.
“Nice one.” SuA grumbles before Siyeon scoots aside.
“You tried breaking in!”
“You encouraged it!”
“You two have to be the worst thieves I’ve ever seen.” A pink-haired girl walks from the next-door house to greet them at Yuna’s home. “Or you’re the next Nancy Drew in-training.”
“Who are you?” SuA quickly stands up before offering a hand to Siyeon.
Siyeon takes the hand and quickly reaches for her wallet in her back pocket, most likely looking for whatever fake ID will get them out of a potential cop car ride.
“Shouldn’t I be asking you that question?” She innocently tilts her head as her piercing gaze makes SuA sweat under her leather jacket. “The nearest police station is five minutes away, and I know the deputy’s daughter-”
“Ryujin, that’s enough!”
SuA lets out a heavy breath as her knight in shining pajamas appears at Ryujin’s side. With messy bed hair and a kind smile, they look much less terrifying (and much cuter) than Ryujin.
~
“Ryujin, that’s enough!” You march towards Yuna’s house as Ryujin sheepishly backs down from the two women in front of her. “They’re probably interns at a newspaper who were sent to look into Yuna’s death.”
“Yeah, sorry we forgot to mention that to you.” The taller one rubs her neck before putting her wallet away. “I left my college ID in my car, I can go get it for you if you’d like-”
“Nah, don’t worry about it,” You shrug before looking at her, “Names are enough for me.”
“Siyeon.” The taller girl sticks out her hand, which you gladly shake.
“And you?” You look over to the smaller girl, who simply smirks.
“You can call me the woman of your dreams.” She flashes you a charming smile before Siyeon elbows her in the gut. “Fuck! What was that for?”
“Her name’s SuA.” Siyeon apologetically says as SuA grabs her stomach in pain. “She can be a bit… much at times.”
You simply smile at SuA, who leans against the doorframe to look tougher.
And less like a child who got their hand stuck in the cookie jar.
Cute.
“SuA, Siyeon, it’s nice to meet you,” You say before quickly introducing yourself, “and this is Ryujin.”
“You still didn’t tell me why you’re knocking at our dead friend’s front door.” She deadpans as you place a hand on her shoulder.
“It’s better that they bug us instead of her parents,” You say, “who have been out of town since the funeral. Rumor is that they’re going to sell the place, but it’ll most likely get torn down.”
“Right. No one wants to live in a house where a woman died.” Siyeon looks at the door for a moment. “Is there any way we could look inside? For our article, we need a full biography of the victim, and we thought her childhood home might fill in the pieces that we don’t know.”
“Yuna.” Ryujin sternly corrects Siyeon. “Her name is Yuna.”
“I-” Siyeon pauses, rethinking her answer. “Yuna, of course. Apologies.”
Ryujin scoffs before nodding.
“I wouldn’t feel comfortable being in there without her parents’ permission, but we can talk to you in Ryujin’s house.” You clarify before Ryujin can say something argumentative in response.
That, however, does not completely stop her from responding as Ryujin’s head snaps towards you.
“You can’t be serious! They’re strangers-”
“-Yet, they’re much better than the other reporters and photographs that have come around here.” You say before beckoning SuA and Siyeon towards Ryujin’s house. “C’mon, we can tell you everything you need to know. We were her closest friends, and we were there when she died.”
You don’t miss the way that SuA’s eyes light up when you say the last part.
She must be really invested in this case.
~
“This hot chocolate is really good.” SuA remarks before offering her glass to you. “Want some?”
“No, I’m alright,” You lean towards SuA with a smile, “but Ryujin’s coffees are so much better.”
“Are you shit-talking my hot chocolate?” Ryujin yells from the kitchen as you slide into the stool next to SuA.
“I thought you said it was okay to do so, as long as you said your coffees were better!” You holler back as Siyeon takes a seat next to SuA.
“My coffee is fantastic, by the way!” Ryujin says as you chuckle to yourself.
Never change, Ryujin.
“Maybe I could buy you some, as a treat for your hospitality?” SuA gives you a wide grin before nudging your shoulder.
“Maybe.” You teasingly shrug before looking at Siyeon. “Are you sure you don’t want anything besides water?”
“No, I’m alright. I feel like we’re imposing on you already.” Siyeon gives SuA a sharp glare before looking back at you. “Do you mind if we ask you some questions about Yuna? It’s not exactly surface-level stuff, and if we cross any boundaries, be sure t-”
“-Did you notice anything weird going on with Yuna before she died?” SuA enters the conversation with the gracefulness of a one-ton elephant. “Any flickering lights, sulfur around window sills, increasing or decreasing temperatures…”
“No, none of that,” You shake your head before thinking, “but there was one thing that she did say, before she died.”
“What was it?” SuA looks deep into your eyes, and you’d blush under any other circumstance.
“The three of us - me, Ryujin, and Yuna - were in the bathroom a few minutes before she died. When we were in there, Yuna was teasing me and she started chanting Bloody Mary in the mirror. I stopped her before she got to the third one, but I can’t help but wonder…”
You bow your head for a moment to recollect yourself before speaking again.
“...I’m sorry, you didn’t come for speculation. So no, there wasn’t anything weird with Yuna before she died.”
You glance over at Siyeon, then to SuA. The two girls are staring at each other with an intrigued look on their faces.
They can’t actually believe this story, right?
“Have there been any other deaths like this in town?” Siyeon asks.
Here we go.
“Two, actually,” You start to chew on your lip, “my parents.”
“I’m sorry for your loss.”
The words fly out of Siyeon’s mouth as she tries to pick her jaw up off the table.
“Don’t be, it was seven years ago. But yes, when I found them, their eyes were liquified, just like Yuna’s.” You offer a weak smile to your companions, both of which look like they’d rather be five feet under the ground than right next to you.
And everyone wonders why I don’t like to talk about my parents - the response is always similar to this.
“Can I ask a stupid question?” SuA takes a sip from her mug after responding.
“Shoot.”
“Did you play Bloody Mary before your parents died?”
Your eyes widen as SuA’s bluntness.
“I-”
“SuA!” Siyeon reaches behind you to smack SuA on the shoulder. “Why would you ask something like that?”
“I’m forming a theory on what’s happened here,” She pauses for dramatic effect, “a damn good one if you ask me.”
Siyeon clears her throat before grabbing her water and standing up.
“Alright, we’re done here. Pardon my partner’s rudeness.” Siyeon walks over to SuA and hauls her onto her feet.
“But my hot cocoa-” SuA whines, which causes you to laugh.
“It’ll be here if you have any more questions.” You wave at the two girls as they bicker and exit the house at the same time.
Ryujin slowly approaches from the kitchen with her eyebrows furrowed.
“Why’d you tell them all that? You know they’re not reporters, right?”
“I don’t know, Ryujin,” You say before patting the vacant stool on your left, “there was something different about those two. They might just be nosy tourists, but I think they might be able to find something in connection with Yuna and my parents.”
“Be honest - you just let them in because SuA was eye-fucking you-”
“RYUJIN!”
~
“Alright, SuA, what’s your theory?” Siyeon places her feet on the dashboard before SuA swats them away in disapproval.
“We’re not dealing with a demon or a vampire or a werewolf. This is just a seriously pissed-off spirit. One that looks like Blood Mary, apparently.” SuA says before turning the car to the left. “We need to look into unsolved murders in the area. Perhaps one that has to do with eyes?”
“Spirits do like to kill their victims in ways that resemble how their murderer killed them. A twisted sort of revenge.” Siyeon nods along. “What would cause the spirit to attack once, and then not attack until seven years later? Usually, these sort of killings happen in rapid succession.”
“That’s the part that has me stumped, too.” SuA pulls into the motel parking lot with ease before putting the car into park. “Let’s get some sleep and see what we can figure out in the morning.”
~
“Shit.”
SuA runs her fingers through her hair as she stares at the headline for the morning news broadcast on TV.
A Deadly Sleepover: Three Teens Found Dead in Local Home!
“You think it’s our spirit?” Siyeon asks as SuA places her head into her hands.
“They said that the girls had their eyes liquified.” SuA absentmindedly looks up to the ceiling.
Why does there always have to be more deaths before we catch our murderer?
SuA watches Siyeon sort through a few newspaper clips while looking at her computer.
“Tell me you’ve got a lead.” SuA taps her foot against the motel flooring as Siyeon nods.
“I do. I cross-referenced local unsolved murders with any autopsy reports of eye gouging or similar injuries, but I couldn’t find anything on the victim’s side.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” SuA asks as Siyeon hands the computer to her.
“Look here. Lucinda Brown, 25 years old. She was murdered in her home by an older man who had his eyes gouged out at the scene of the crime.”
“Jesus.” SuA scrolls through the autopsy reports. “You think this is our girl?”
“Timeline matches up. Lucinda was murdered twenty years before any murders occurred here. That’s enough time to drive any person, living or dead, to insanity. Speaking of, her murderer managed to escape jail time by pleading that he was mentally unwell at the time of the murder.” Siyeon replies.
“Alright, so what do we do now? Dig up some old bones and give them a communion in fire?” SuA suggests, which is quickly shot down by Siyeon.
“The woman was cremated, so that’s a no-go. There must be something else tying her to the mortal world.” Siyeon ponders for a moment. “Let me see the laptop again.”
“Sure.” SuA hands it back to Siyeon before looking at the TV.
The reporter’s interviewing a neighbor who had heard nothing of the incident, except that the girls had been playing Bloody Mary with a handheld mirror in the backyard.
“Bingo,” With a satisfying click, Siyeon turns the laptop to face SuA, "we've got our object of interest.”
On the laptop monitor is a picture of the crime scene from Lucinda Brown’s home. It’s obvious that this was a home invasion - a dresser was knocked down in the background, sheets were tangled with each other on the floor, and blood was splattered across every possible surface in the room.
No wonder the family cremated the poor girl.
SuA’s eyes drift up towards the middle of the picture, where a floor-length mirror stares back at her. In the middle of the mirror, written in blood, is a simple message: Help Me.
“She knew she was going to die there.” SuA softly says. “One last act of rebellion against her killer. I think we’ve got our ghost, but the question remains: where’s that mirror?”
~
“I can’t believe you still kept the thrift store, after all of these years.” Ryujin adjusts the cap on her head before leaning over the counter. “I know it’s your parents, but that place gives me the creeps.”
“I know.” You nod as you stare out of the cafe window. “There’s just a part of me that would hate to see it go to ruin.”
“So you just leave it in limbo?”
“So I just leave it in limbo.” You answer as she looks over to the register.
“You could always come work with me, y’know. I might own this place one day.” Ryujin’s eyes sparkle with ambition, and you can’t help but laugh at her goals.
“You work on that, Ryujin.” You take a step back before the door opens. “Well, if it isn’t our reporter friends.”
“Friends?” SuA scoffs before walking in. “I thought I left a better impression than friends.”
“Maybe I want you to make a better impression now.” You tease before grabbing your coffee. “Order something first, and then we’ll talk.”
“Don’t have to tell me twice.” SuA rushes over to talk with Ryujin, which causes laughter to fall from your lips.
Wonder if she’s like this with every person she meets…
“Siyeon.” You greet her as she admires the display of baked goods. “You should try the donuts so Ryujin doesn’t have to burn anything in the oven.”
“It was one time!” Ryujin yells as she writes SuA’s order on a cup.
“I’ll get something in a minute, but I wanted to ask you if you saw the news this morning.” Siyeon places her hand on the display case as her eyes look through the different options.
“I did, yes,” You lower your voice before asking, “do you think it’s related to the other deaths?”
“Given that the girls had the same wounds that Yuna did, I’d say there’s a strong chance that it is.” Siyeon quietly answers.
“Do you know how to stop them?”
“We have a strong idea. Have you seen a mirror like this?” Siyeon grabs a folded-up piece of paper and hands it to you.
You grab the paper and carefully unfold it, and you gasp as you stare at the crime scene in front of you.
“I-” You pause as you notice the mirror in the corner, “I think I’ve seen that mirror before. My parents used to have one just like it in the thrift shop that they owned.”
Siyeon’s eyes widen as she looks over at SuA.
“I’m listening, hold on.” SuA hands her card to Ryujin before walking over to the two of you. “Mind if we take a look around there?”
“I thought you wanted to have a coffee shop date.” You smile as she bashfully looks away for a moment.
“Ah, so now it’s a date.” SuA chuckles before leaning against the counter. “We can change plans, as long as you don’t mind having a third wheel.”
“As long as you two aren’t making out in the back of the Impala, I don’t really care.” Siyeon shrugs before Ryujin hands her a baked good.
“Here’s one slightly toasted-but-not-burnt donut.” Ryujin says before grabbing a coffee from the back. “And your black coffee, you heathen.”
“I prefer my coffee black instead of liquid sugar, thanks.” SuA remarks before taking a sip. “Perfect.”
“Whatever.” Ryujin rolls her eyes before looking out of the window. “Hey, did you see that woman?”
“What woman?” You look out to the road, but there’s not one car or person outside except the Chevy Impala.
You notice the visible panic on Siyeon’s face as she walks over to Ryujin.
“What does she look like?”
“Well, she had pretty blonde hair, but her face was a little messed up. It almost looked like she was dead or something…” Ryujin confesses.
“Fuck.” SuA sets her coffee aside before grabbing Ryujin.
“What are you doing?” She frantically looks around as SuA drags her to the car.
“If you want to live, you have to come with us.”
The door slams shut as Siyeon follows after her.
“We’ll explain in the car, I swear.”
~
“Are you serious?” Ryujin breathes deeply through her nose as Siyeon covers the rearview mirror with a small towel. “If so, I’m fucked.”
“But she didn’t say Bloody Mary three times!” You try to reason with SuA as she steps on the gas after pulling out from the parking spot.
“It doesn’t seem to matter who said it.” SuA runs a red light in town as you fumble with the keys in your hand. “What can you tell us about that mirror in your parents’ thrift shop?”
“I remember that they sold it to a woman in our neighborhood, a few weeks before they…” You trail off. “You’re telling me that this mirror killed my mom and dad?”
“Not the mirror as much as the spirit attached to this.” Siyeon says as she lowers the passenger seat window.
“This is insane, right?” Ryujin looks over to you with a look of fear that doesn’t normally sit on her face. “I can’t believe that you believe this!”
“I mean… I’ve always felt that there was something wrong about their deaths, but I didn’t think it was a literal haunting. I just thought it was a mean rumor that the neighborhood kids saw.”
“The same kids that would play Bloody Mary with that mirror?” SuA asks as you point out the thrift shop in the distance.
“You guys have done more to solve my parents murder in the last twenty-four hours than the police have done in seven years.” You shake your head. “I don’t know how I could thank you.”
“Let’s save your friend first, and then let’s talk about thank you’s, alright?” SuA pulls into a nearby parking spot as you hand Siyeon the keys.
“Are you positive that the mirror is here?” Ryujin looks over to you as you nod.
“The woman who bought that mirror had died a few weeks later, of an actual stroke, and one of her children took it with them when they moved out of her house.” You explain as SuA nods along.
“That explains the lack of murders in seven years, but that means someone brought it back to your town.”
“I’ve used the thrift shop as a storage unit since my parents’ house was torn down two years ago. A few weeks ago, I saw that someone placed a floor-length mirror outside of the back door, so I brought it inside so it wouldn’t get smashed.” You hand the picture back to Siyeon. “The same mirror in that photo, minus the bloody message.”
“I hate to rush the exposition, but I’ve seen Bloody Mary in your side mirror.” Ryujin says before slapping a hand over your eyes. “Can we please get this show on the road?”
“Right. You get the hammer, I’ll get the shotgun.” Siyeon says as she and SuA exit the car at the same time.
“I’m fucked, aren’t I?” Ryujin whimpers as you rub her shoulder.
“They hunt ghosts, or whatever they tried to explain to us. We have to keep you alive long enough for them to deal with this.” You attempt to comfort her as you hear the trunk of the car slam shut.
You roll down the window as SuA approaches your side of the car.
“Hey, be careful out there. I still want to get coffee with you sometime.” You offer her a cheerful smile as she runs a hand through her hair.
“You don’t have to worry about me, babe, I’ve got you. Both of you.” SuA winks at you before walking towards the thrift shop.
You shyly look away as Ryujin punches your shoulder.
“Can you flirt with her when I’m not near certain death?”
~
“Of course there isn’t any electricity.” SuA quietly grumbles before flipping the light switch off. “Where did they say the mirrors were?”
“Up ahead, and to the left.” Siyeon says before following your instructions. “Here we are.”
“How many mirrors are there?” SuA says as she looks at the collection of floor-length mirrors. “Do we start smashing, or…?”
“Maybe if we summon her, she will appear from the mirror that was in her house.” Siyeon says before turning to a mirror hung on the wall.
“That’s a terrible idea that will get us both killed.” SuA tries to pull Siyeon away, but Siyeon pushes her aside. “Don’t do this, I’m warning you.”
“Too late.” Siyeon locks eyes with the reflection in the mirror. “Bloody Mary, Blood Mary, Bloody Mary.”
The lights above them flicker as SuA approaches the first set of mirrors. The reflection of the flashing lights nearly blinds her, but she manages to smash the first one with little difficulty.
“Do you see her?” SuA yells before smashing another mirror.
“Not yet!” Siyeon calls out before turning to the side. “Keep going!”
The lights flash with increasing frequency as SuA continues to break every floor-length mirror that crosses her path.
Why would anyone ever have so many mirrors?
Again and again, SuA smashes every mirror that she sees. And again, none of them seem to stop the flashing lights. She travels deeper and deeper as her hammer strikes every mirror in her path.
SuA’s deep into the back of the thrift shop when Siyeon screams in pain.
“Siyeon-ah!” SuA yells out before running through a different part of the store.
How many different types of mirrors are there?
“She’s… here!” Siyeon manages to get out before another scream escapes her.
SuA doesn’t have time to smash every mirror she sees - she has to find the mirror, and fast.
She flies through the store, to the musical accompaniment of Siyeon’s sounds of terror and pain, until she spots a mirror with the tiniest bloodstain on it.
“Guess the mirror wasn’t totally clean, huh.” She says to herself before the hammer connects to the mirror.
It shatters instantly, just as Siyeon goes quiet.
“Siyeon!” SuA backtracks quickly, only to find Siyeon laying on the floor with blood coming from her eyes. “You okay?”
“I’ll live,” She mutters before slowly getting off of the floor, “but she won’t.”
Siyeon weakly points ahead of her, where a woman that matches Ryujin’s descriptions and the autopsy report disappears into a cloud of black smoke.
“You think she’s gone for good?” Siyeon quietly asks.
“As long as the mirror stays shattered, I’d say so.”
~
“I suppose I should say thank you.” You say as you approach the Chevy Impala.
SuA leans against the driver’s side door with a smirk.
“I suppose I should say that you’re welcome, but I think an apology is in order.”
She sheepishly looks away as you wave off her concerns.
“Don’t worry about the mirrors. They’re not worth the price of someone’s life.” You look over to the thrift shop. “Besides, it’s time that I let that place go. It’s just a collection of bad memories and poor decisions. Something more positive and welcoming should take its place.”
“You’re selling it?”
“No, I’m giving it to Ryujin. She’s dreamed of owning her own coffee shop since she started working at that little cafe uptown.” You gaze at the keys in your hand. “She’ll make better use of the space, I know it.”
SuA tilts her head at you.
“How is she?”
“Fine. Nothing that a pint of beer and a bit of therapy won’t fix.” You laugh to yourself. “How’s Siyeon?”
“A bit shaken up, but nothing major. Brushes with death are pretty common in our line of work.”
“Well, for your sake and mine, I hope you’ll be a bit safer through your travels.” You bite your lip as SuA takes a step toward you.
“You’ll be thinking of me, even after we leave? How sweet.” SuA teases you before you retaliate.
“It’s not every day that I meet a girl as forthcoming, kind, and attractive as you.” You flirt back before taking a step towards SuA.
It’s in this moment that you realize how close you are to one another, and another step from one of you will cause your bodies (and hopefully your lips) to collide.
“If you keep sweet-talking me, I might not be able to leave.”
There’s a shred of honesty behind SuA’s flirting - she’s seriously considering staying for another night or two.
“Maybe that’s the idea,” You take a half-step forward, and you place a quick peck on her cheek, “but you have more people to save, no?”
“Unfortunately, I do, but I’m not ruining this moment.”
SuA pulls you closer by grabbing your hips, and before you have time to relax, her lips collide with yours. You immediately kiss her back as your hands land on her shoulders.
You only break off when you need air, and SuA looks at you with a proud smile.
“Maybe I’ll come back some day.” She lets go of you before pulling her aviators off of her head.
“Maybe.” You softly repeat as SuA climbs into the car.
Siyeon offers you a friendly wave before rolling down her window and handing you a piece of paper.
“For later, when you miss SuA.” She says before the Impala pulls out of the parking spot and heads back onto the road.
After the car leaves your field of vision, you look at the note in your hand.
Written in pen is SuA’s phone number, followed by a brief message:
For when you miss SuA, or if anything in this town ever requires our area of expertise. - Siyeon.
You smile to yourself.
Maybe you’ll call the Winchester girl and see if she’s free for a week or two in the future. Maybe you’ll call just to hear her voice and ask about her adventures. Maybe you’ll wait for her to track down your phone number and call you first.
maybe, maybe, maybe.

Things have fallen on hard times for the members of the Ghostbusters when the memory of saving the world from the threat of supernatural destruction fades in the minds of the city. Now, with each of them going their separate ways, Egon joins up with another scientist to share a lab so he can continue his experiments. When an innocent mistake by his lab mate leads to a mix up that could mean big consequences for Egon, he must choose whether or not to reveal the truth to Molly, the test subject or keep it secret forever.

“Molly, wait!” Egon called out as Molly stormed down the block. Her eyes were fixed straight forward, refusing to look back at him. How could he know a thing like that and not tell her? Why would he not tell her that she was pregnant with his child, before deciding to make a fool of them both in the middle of her friend’s party.
“I have nothing to say to you right now Dr. Spengler.” she huffed, finally reaching the doors to her building. Egon chased after her as fast as he could, grateful that he managed to catch up as Molly struggled to find her key. Hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath, faced with his general lack of athleticism. Huffing and puffing as he tried to decide what he should say next.
“Please.” he begged; Molly let out a sigh before she turned around to face him. She could see in eyes he was angry with himself. Molly, realizing that while it was a stupid mistake Egon hadn't meant to hurt her. The revelation, forcing her to consider if it really was just his haphazard announcement that was bothering her.
Molly had to face the facts. She was in love with the odd scientist and former ghostbuster even though she had only barely acknowledged it aloud. Everything was happening so fast; she felt her head spinning. Am I really pregnant…with Egon’s baby, she thought.
The irony wasn’t lost on her. She knew she should be thrilled, ecstatic even at the news. Instead, all she could think of was the interaction between him and Janine. It was true they had broken things off long ago, but had his feelings towards her really changed?
For all intents and purposes, he barely knew Molly. If Janine wanted him back, would he abandon her? Leave her to be with the woman he loved, instead of someone he accidentally became involved with? Molly couldn’t bear the thought of it.
Egon had managed to pull himself together enough to step up beside her on the stoop. “Go ahead, say what you need to say.” Molly huffed; her mouth pressed into a tight, thin line. Trying her best to hold back her frustration—her tears.
“It was an accident. I would have never blurted it out like that had he not…” Egon began, ranting away before realizing that he was shifting the blame. “No…no that’s not right. I’m sorry. I should have been more discreet.” Molly felt the tears beginning to well in her eyes as she nodded in response.
“More so Egon, you should have told me first! You knew this whole time and said nothing. How long did you know about the baby?” she asked him. Hearing her own words as they left her, rendered her speechless. Both their hearts thumping as Egon stared deeply into Molly’s eyes. Wanting desperately to kiss her.
“That’s right—we’re having a baby.” he smiled, pulling Molly towards him, and leaning into her. The two of them instinctively closed their eyes as the heat of their lips pressed together. Molly shoved him back, worried that she had jumped too fast. Egon stood still in confusion, staring back at her.
“What's wrong?” He asked. Molly took in a deep breath, knowing if she didn't say anything now then whatever came after this moment could be ruined.
“What—what about Janine?” She asked, feeling embarrassed to have even brought it up. Egon smiled, pulling Molly’s tearful face into his hands. Cupping her soft cheeks in his palms.
“Molly. Janine and I are long over. It's true that we were close. That at one time I had asked her to marry me…but despite how much we tried we just couldn't make things work—we are incompatible together.” He explained.
“Are you sure? You don’t sound sure.” She asked him, the hints of hope present in her voice. Egon smiled, finding himself laughing a bit at just how adorable a jealous Molly could be.
“I am sure…a couple can't make it work when they both want different things in life.” he explained. Molly listened, staring down at her feet. Shuffling a bit as she tried to bring herself to say what needed to be said next.
“Do we?” She mumbled; Egon barely able to discern her words. Molly, wondering if she had said them out loud at all.
“Do we what?”
“Do we want the same things?” she repeated. Her hands, coming to rest on the small of her belly. Egon’s eyebrows raised, knowing now exactly what she meant. He placed his hand over hers and smiled.
“Yes. Yes, we do.”
“Egon…” Molly began, the two of them moments away from sharing a kiss when the sound of someone approaching came upon them.
“Oh, shit Mol, here you are! Are you ok?” Sam asked her, inadvertently ruining the moment between them. She had managed to sneak away from the party and track them down. Figuring that Molly would run home.
“I'm fine Sam thank you, just tired and needed to leave. I'm sorry, I didn’t mean to ruin the party for you.” She explained.
“Girl… no. You didn’t ruin anything. I just wanted to make sure you were ok. Elaine and I are worried about you…and Seth…well.”
“LET’S…not talk about him.” Molly insisted, turning her sights to Egon. It was clear to Sam that with the news of Molly’s pregnancy, things between her and the new beau had suddenly become a lot more complicated.
“No worries… I uh…” Sam continued, struggling to find the words, when Egon chimed in.
“Listen, I should go. Let you get some rest tonight. I will be back to see you in the morning.” Egon assured her, realizing that Sam was going to be hard pressed to leave her friend after the night they’d just had.
“Yeah, I got it all taken care of Dr. Spengler.” Sam assured him. Egon smiled and turned to walk down the steps when Molly reached out and touched his shoulder.
“No wait… you don't have to go.” she whined, shooting Sam an annoyed look. Understandably upset at her friend for having dismissed him without her consent.
“It's ok, really. I will see you bright and early…after all we have a lot to discuss.” He said, smiling up at her. Molly couldn’t help but smile back. Her cheeks still flush from their kiss.
“Ok.” she lamented. Sam, nodding as she helped Molly inside the building. Egon returning home. His fingers tracing his lips, reminiscing in the memory of their kiss.

Molly awoke the next day with a slight headache. Sam still passed out on the sofa in the living room as she got up to make herself something to eat. Settling for a small cup of blueberry yogurt and a half-eaten granola bar, before sitting at her kitchen table. Her hand, occasionally finding its way to her stomach.
It was strange, knowing there was a child inside her. A piece of her and Egon with her even now while they were apart. Sam was even more surprised at the news. Telling her friend that her life was beginning to sound like something out of a made for TV film. The two of them laughed as they thought about how Elaine would respond to the news. Molly, never more excited to think that a family, a whole family, was in the cards for her after all.
She devoured her breakfast quickly, feeling quite ravenous after not eating much the night before. The sounds of her in the kitchen, stirring Sam awake. Her friend joined her at the small table. From the sour look on her face, it was clear she was feeling the effects of all her drinking at the party.
“Ah… I didn’t even have that much.” Sam groaned.
“You gonna make it?” Molly chuckled. Sam sneered at her as she felt her stomach twisting and turning.
“How is it you're the one pregnant and I'm the one who feels like she might puke?”
“Ha ha very funny.” Molly smirked. Casually glancing over to the clock to see that it was already almost 9am. “Shit… you sticking around for Egon? He will probably be here soon. He’s very punctual.”
“I can imagine.” Sam said with a raised brow, “So weird you’re having your boyfriend's baby without even having slept with him.” Molly’s face went bright red.
Well if you hadn’t come over last night that might not have been the case, Molly thought to herself. Only smiling on the outside as Sam managed to pull herself out of the chair and head back into the living room. “Where are you going?”
“I’m grabbing my stuff so you and Loverboy can be alone sheesh.” Sam said, rolling her eyes, “I want all the details later… I’m gonna head back and see how badly jacked the place is.”
“Ok” Molly laughed as Sam disappeared through the front door.

Egon had been tossing and turning all night. His eyes bagged and dark from the lack of sleep as he made his way into Ray’s Occult Books before heading to Molly’s. This situation had been kept close to the chest, Egon choosing to keep it all to himself before evolving anyone else in his affairs. With a baby well on its way however, the one person he had to tell was Ray.
He walked in through the back entrance, long before the store opened, to find Ray sorting through last month's books. Trying to find somewhere to scrounge up a few extra dollars to make this month's rent. The store had always been a passion for Ray, the only thing he had that was his. After the Ghostbusters went under and he lost all his money from the house, this was all that was left. Egon was always there to help whenever possible, but today he was the one who needed it most.
“Good morning, Ray.” Egon said, handing his friend a cup of coffee.
“Egon? What’s got you over here so early? Everything alright?” Ray asked him. It wasn’t like him to show up unannounced so early in the morning looking like something the cat dragged in from his lack of sleep.
“I need to talk.” Egon said plainly, taking a seat opposite Ray at the desk.
“Ok, shoot.” Ray said as he went to take a sip from his cup.
“I’m going to be a father.” Egon confessed, Ray choking on the coffee and making a mess of himself with the news.
“Is this a joke? Did Peter put you up to this?”
“No, nothing like that, I'm serious.” Egon explained, and from the look in his eyes Ray could tell he wasn’t kidding. Grabbing some tissues and cleaning himself off as he let out a sigh.
“Well, that's unexpected. I didn’t even know you were dating anyone. Who is she?”
“Molly.”
“Molly? The girl at the research lab?” Ray asked him. Though Egon was rather vague, he had mentioned her to Ray a few times. While Ray figured Egon had a crush on her, there was nothing Egon ever told him to think things had progressed as far as this.
“Yes… it's a long story.” Egon explained. Ray raised his eyebrows and nodded his head.
“I bet… Well then, I’m all ears.” he responded. Egon was grateful to have him to talk to. It didn’t take long to let Ray in on the chaos that had become Egon’s life. His feelings for Molly growing, then the accident at the lab, and confessing it all to Molly. Ray’s head had begun spinning with all that had happened in such a short amount of time.
“So you… you haven’t even slept with her?” he asked Egon. the normally deadpanned scientist blushing.
“I–ah, yeah that's right.” he confirmed, swallowing back as Ray shrugged.
“I mean hey shit happens. I suppose you’ll be making up for that though.” Ray chuckled. Egon looked unsure. “What?”
“Last night I may have accidentally announced the pregnancy to her entire friend group. We were at a party and...”
“Party? You actually went to a party… well now I know you love this girl. I can’t even get you to crawl outta the lab unless foods involved." Ray laughed, Egon nodding in agreement. It was clear to Ray that Egon had a lot to sort out. The feeling only intensified when Egon explained his mess up. Ray was compassionate of course, but let Egon know that he had definitely overstepped.
“Well, there is no going back now. All the two of you can do is move forward… I mean you’re gonna have a kid. Wait until the guys hear about this…” Ray said when Egon shot him a look, “...that is when you’re ready to tell them of course.”
“I appreciate the discretion, Ray. Listen, I have to go. I am supposed to meet with her this morning.” Egon explained as he stood up from the chair and headed back out the way he came.
“Go get her tiger!” Ray cheered as Egon reached the threshold, rolling his eyes as he disappeared from the doorway.

It was a chilly, however uncharacteristically nice day for this time of year in the boroughs. Egon had been walking along, so lost in his own thoughts that when he found himself at Molly’s building he had no idea how he’d gotten there. The last few weeks had felt so surreal that he could hardly think of anything else. He tried to shake off his nerves before pressing the button to ring her apartment when Sam came through the door.
“Oh! Dr. Spengler.” she smiled, barely missing running into him. Egon, smiling at her as he moved out of her way.
“Good morning, Sam.”
“She’s waiting on you…but uh don’t tell her I said that.” she laughed, Egon’s heart beginning to pound.
“I won’t.” he responded as Sam reached the sideway, turning back around as Egon started inside.
“Oh and Dr. Spengler…” she began as he turned back to face her. “Happy Halloween.”
“Same to you.” he told her as he walked inside. It was Halloween already, Molly’s favorite holiday. The thoughts of this time next year having their own little trick or treater had begun filling his mind. A baby to be born sometime in the summer, bouncing around as a happy chubby little thing dressed up as a little dinosaur, a princess, or maybe even a ghost?
The possibilities had filled him with joy. A feeling so intense that Egon thought he might burst. A kind of happiness he had never felt before and never expected he would ever feel. Knocking on Molly’s door with the imaginations of them together all dressed in costume for baby’s first Halloween still heavy on his mind.
“Good morning.” Molly said as she answered the door. Giving Egon a hug before allowing him inside. The two of them, sitting together on her small couch in the living room, both of them feeling the intention of being so close once again.
“How are you feeling?” Egon asked her as he brought his hand out to take hers. Molly smiled, bringing her own hand once more to her belly. It’s new favorite resting place just below her navel.
“We’re fine. No symptoms yet.” she giggled. The sound of her voice coupled with how beautiful she looked, sent Egon’s heart soaring. This gorgeous and kindhearted woman was going to be the mother of his child and as far as Egon was concerned, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I’m glad. I wanted to tell you Molly I am so sorry about last ni–”
“It’s ok, Egon. I’m over it. Let’s put it behind us ok… we have much more important stuff going on.” Molly smiled.
“Listen… What are your plans for tonight? After all, it's Halloween.” Egon smiled, Molly’s face turning to panic.
“Oh my god I completely forgot. I must be losing it.” she laughed. “I actually don’t have any other than the party last night… did you have something in mind?”
“Why don’t you and I head to the store and grab some candy and a bite for lunch. We can spend the day together talking… you know, getting to know each other better.” Egon explained. The idea made Molly feel more than a little excited. She had been wanting to be with him for so long and now with the baby on the way, things were almost perfect.
“And the candy?” she asked him.
“We can hand it out to the trick or treaters.” he told her, watching as she began to tear up, still smiling brightly as if she had never felt happier.
“I love that idea.”
Molly and Egon had spent the day together. Fighting the crowds at the store for all the other last minute candy shoppers. Molly, poking fun at Egon for devouring a bag of fun size crunch bars before they even made it back home. The two of them, dropping off the bags of candy before walking to a local diner.
Molly hadn’t felt like eating much, but Egon insisted. Reminding her that it wasn’t only herself that she would be nourishing with her club sandwich and side of fries. Molly, heeding his request as the two of them talked for hours.
Egon continued to apologize for his behavior at the party. Explaining to Molly everything between him and Janine. He wanted to be married, have children, move on in life and Janine was just not ready and he wasn’t sure if she ever would be. Eventually it was two much for the two of them to overcome.
Molly had felt so relieved, though also a bit guilty for feeling so. Quickly changing the conversation to other things. Eventually the two of them ended up getting kicked out of the diner to make room for other patrons. Laughing as they grabbed their coats and dashed out onto the sidewalk.
“So have you always wanted a family?” Egon asked her as they walked back to her apartment. Trying to continue their conversation they’d begun inside the diner.
“Ever since I was little…” she smiled, squeezing Egon’s hand as they walked.
“Can I ask something?” Egon inquired cautiously. Molly, nodding for him to continue. “Why someone like Seth? Someone like you could’ve been married and had a bunch of kids… why this idea with him?” Molly grew a bit quiet. It was an easy answer, though it wasn’t one she was sure Egon would believe.
“It just never happened for me. I mean I began to grow impatient. The dating scene here in the city is not exactly quality.” she laughed, Egon following along with her. “I just knew I wanted to be a mom and Seth, despite his behavior at the party, is a good guy.” Suddenly Egon began becoming a bit uncomfortable. Hoping there wasn’t something between them he had overlooked.
“Do you…do you love him?” he asked her, frightened to know the answer.
“I do, but not romantically. He’s a good friend Egon…that's all.” she assured him, taking hold of his face and pulling him down to kiss his cheek. “I—” she began, the words of love for her companion dancing on the edge of her lips when they reached the building.
“We are here.” Egon said, drawing Molly’s attention back to the present time.
“Oh, let me let us in.” she laughed nervously. The two of them, heading upstairs and pouring bag after bag of candy into a big bowl. Watching TV and talking away while they awaited the first sign of trick or treaters. Getting to know each other, little by little as the minutes turned to hours.
By the time the first trick or treaters arrived, Molly was well versed in Egon’s unconventional upbringing and he in her typical childhood experience. Both of them were equally fascinated by one another. Molly was practically begging Egon for more about his time as a Ghostbuster and his hopes for the future of his reach. The two of them, quickly turning their focus on their own future—one they would now share.
“Oh, my heart.” Molly said as she closed the door. Smiling with the thought of the group of trick or treaters that just left her door. Egon too couldn’t help but notice how adorable they all were. Dressed together as a little princess and a dragon. Mom and Dad, politely waiting behind them as they opened their bags for their candy.
“I wonder what our will be.” Egon said aloud, catching Molly’s attention. Realizing only then he had said it aloud.
“I think it's a boy.” Molly hummed, “Must like crunch bars like his Dad.” she continued, scarfing down one as the Egon started hungrily at her.
“I think you might be right.” Egon smiled.
“You ok.” Molly laughed nervously. Seeing her glowing, eating his favorite chocolate so happy and carrying his child had Egon’s blood swirling. Not only had he gotten to know this beautiful creature, but he had reached a point where he could no longer allow things to continue without making her his.
“I need to fix this.” he said in a low hum. Standing up from the couch to approach her.
“Fix what?”
“I can’t go any longer knowing you are carrying my child without… without having copulated with you.” he explained, pulling Molly close to him. Arm wrapped gingerly around her waist. The words and his forwardness, heating her cheeks and speeding up her heart. Pupils, dilating as he brought her lips to his, tasting the sweetness of the chocolate on her mouth.
“Me either…” she said breathily into their kiss. Before they knew it, the two of them were making a heated dash to Molly’s bedroom. A blur of clothing tossed to the wayside and the two of them felt desperate to be with one another.
“Are you sure?” Egon asked, hesitating a moment, already leaking. His cock now rock-hard at the sight of Molly laying naked beneath him. She was beautiful–his mouth watering at her ample breasts. Full and almost perfectly symmetrical, with taut pale pink nipples. He found it hard not to stare at her, analyzing every inch of her body. Every inch of her was perfection in his mind.
“I’m sure.” Molly said, raising herself up to kiss him once more. Tongues, tangling together as Egon’s hands went wandering over her. Caressing the soft flesh of her breasts as he kissed down along her neck. Leaving marks in brilliant shades of purple along her collarbone.
Taking his time before dropping to her breasts. Drawing the nipple into his mouth, Molly let out a satisfied sigh. His fingers tracing down the line from her sternum to her still flat stomach. Stopping a moment to remember that he already was inside her. Groaning, Egon decided he’d be damned if he wasn’t going to make up for his lack of pleasure in their child’s conception. His curious fingers traveling to the heat between her thighs.
As he slipped inside her, they both moaned. Egon was thrilled to know how much he excited her. His intellectual mind, reminding him that her wetness and warmth was directly correlated to her desire for him. His fingers quickly curled up inside her. Determined to find the right spot when Molly’s back arched up from the bed. Driving his fingers more in contact with the right spot.
“Oh fuck.” she moaned, as he pressed into the soft spongy spot along her upper walls. Making small, deliberate circles as he felt her began to clamp down on him.
“Oh Molly, cum.” he told her. Molly was writhing beneath him on the bed. Hands gripped tightly to her sheets as the sounds of her nails scratching against the fabric filled her ears. The fringe of her hair, sticking to the sweat on her forehead as she came hard against Egon’s fingers. Breathless and crying out his name.
“Egon! Ah!” Feeling the rush of wetness over his hand made Egon moan, heated and mad with desire. He knew that he needed to be inside her. Quickly pulling out his fingers to stroke himself before lining his cock against her sex. Allowing the tip of his head to kiss at her clit. Rubbing her with it a moment before he pushed carefully inside her.
“Oh you feel so good.” he groaned, filling her slowly. Her whole body, still shaking beneath him. Still engrossed from her orgasm. Though she was weak she was ready, Molly wrapping her legs around Egon to help draw him further inside her.
“Mmmm… oh…uh…” Molly cried. Her insides, pulling tightly along his shaft with every stroke of his hips. Crashing inside her over and over. The sheer pleasure of him filling her so completely, making it hard to press on. The two of them, both completely lost in passion and bliss.
Egon continued pumping, his hands grabbing hold of Molly’s hips as he pushed inside. Staring down at her as she kept her eyes closed. The look on her face, making him want to fuck ehr harder. The knowledge she carried his child, making him want to slow down.
Though he knew sex in pregnancy was not usually harmful, Egon could help but want to be careful. To protect her and their baby from anything that would dare harm them. Choosing to keep going with their safety in mind as he continued slowly, but deeply taking her.
It wasn’t long before Molly began shaking beneath him. Her legs, quivering and her moans becoming less coherent. Her core, squeezing him so tightly it caused him to mewl. Lifting her up on his lap so he could kiss her as he continued to thrust inside her.
“Oh Egon, yes… yes… yes!” she cried as Egon fucked up into her. Breast bouncing in his face before he began to kiss and suck on them. His own orgasm quickly made itself known. Once he felt her begin to pulse it was over, Egon cumming hard against the back of her. Spilling himself as she continued to rise and fall on his cock.
The two of them were so exhausted afterwards they collapsed beside one another in the bed. Egon pulled Molly over against his chest. His now lover, nuzzling against him as she began to waiver in and out of sleep. “Molly…” he began.
“Hmm?” she hummed, only half coherent enough to respond.
“I—” Egon said, wanting to tell her he loved her. Already he loved her and their child more than anything. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Molly responded, though it was clear to Egon she wasn’t awake enough to understand what he had said—what she was saying.
“Happy Halloween.”
“Happy…” Molly said, her words trailing off as she passed out snuggly against him. Egon wrapping his arms around her. Holding her close as she slept.

KEVIN ‘KEV’ TANAKA (IDW GHOSTBUSTERS COMICS)
@moonbeamelf @bixiebeet @spengnitzed @professorlehnsherr-almashy @angelixgutz @amalthea9
Tumblr media
“Kevin Tanaka (also known as Kev)  is the latest member of the Ghostbusters' New York branch support staff. Kevin is visually based on Ghostbusters Wiki administrator User:Mrmichaelt and his name  name appears to be a nod to the male secretary of the same first name in the 2016 movie Ghostbusters: Answer the Call.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“It's no secret that you love the ongoing IDW Ghostbusters series. What elements are you looking forward to continuing in the next year or two? What are your feelings on Kevin Tanaka?
It has its moments. I'm really conflicted about what I want to see. On one hand, I'm very eager to see the Ghostbusters go up against these Predators that Tiamat talked about in the Crossing Over maxi-series and will Ray figure out a way to safely remove Jenny Moran from the Containment Unit? I'm wondering if 2021 is finally the year Erik Burnham fulfills a promise to Dan to do a Christmas annual featuring Krampus. Or will Chi-You, Rodefhiri or the Sandman return to exact revenge? Could there be surprise returns by gods like Hel or Aibell, could be. Will Special Agent Holtzmann finally make her debut? And last but not least, there's my, I guess, unhealthy love for the Chicago Ghostbusters. I'm always down to see more of them. Of course, there's the white elephant in the room with Afterlife. I wouldn't object to seeing the comic integrate the gunner seat into Ecto-1. I can see Ray doing it just because it would be fun, not for any strategic reasons during a bust on the go.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, I ended up really loving the Year One mini-series after some initial concerns that it could be too revisionist and hurt the movie canon. That anecdote of when Ray and Egon first met was really special and is in my top 3 favorite moments of the overall comic series since Erik took over as the writer. I'd kill to see more of Year One as there's so many other things they could explore in year one. They only explored the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the surge in calls they dealt with after catching Slimer. They could go explore when Peter and Ray first met. They could do a longer Janine story similar to Winston's issue and expanding on that 2 parter in Volume 2. Heck, they could do a Year Six or Seven mini-series set during/after the events of Ghostbusters II. They could do a Year Nine about the IDW canon's version of Ghostbusters: The Video Game. The possibilities are endless. Year One also satisfied my hope to see the series get back to basics so to speak and get away from the crossovers. I get the crossovers are IDW's bread and butter and they've saved the Ghostbusters comics over the years but I was burnt out on them and no real desire to see another one even though it's been almost a year since the finale of the most recent one, the Transformers one (sorry Erik!).
Tumblr media
Kevin. Tanaka. Y'know, I still can't believe that happened. I'm just some dude that spends way too much time on a wiki. To be acknowledged like that and become a part of canon is both humbling and mind boggling. I didn't know that was going to happen. It was a complete surprise. Dan just asked me for a reference photo out of the blue. I figured I would be for a hard to see face in a crowd. Then Ghostbusters International #3 was about to come out. You [Devilmanozzy] sent me an email while you were going over the preview pages. I was intrigued and wanted to know what you were being so cryptic about. I got a panel! And Ghostbusters International #4 came out and I think my soul left its body temporarily when it was apparent Kevin would be a recurring character. I love Kevin, but he's an ideal version of me at best. It's scary how close his dialogue is to how I talk. I never told Erik this. But in that issue when he meets the ATC team and Erin flips out on Kevin and Kevin quips he gets by, I had a very similar experience of being mistaken for a different Michael but in a bar really close to when that issue came out in stores and I was weirded out. Or Dan, he only had like two reference photos of me and it was amazing yet again scary how close he got to making Kevin look like me. Not even considering my connection to Kevin, the backstory of his handicap and firefighter family was really intriguing. His love of Boston sports not so much.
Tumblr media
(...)
I'd never beg Erik for it, but it would be cool if someday PCOC signs off on letting Kevin use the ghostbusting equipment. More so since Janine is now part of the machine.”

Hi there hun! I've been going back and forth with myself but figure why not ask, right?
If time allows either sooner or later whichever comes first since I know you're writing a few things at the moment, I humbly request fluffy, cuddly, Egon x Reader cuteness if at all possible? Maybe Reader has had a rough day or Egon finds reader in need of a hug and cuddles and he willingly gives it since he has a crush on said reader?
Just a thought! Thanks in advance!
Rain - Egon Spengler x Gender Neutral!Reader
A/N : Hello! Sorry for responding to this so late. I hope you enjoy it! I really liked writing this and imagining cuddly Egon lol
A sudden rainstorm had hit Manhattan. Just as spring seemed to have sprung, here comes the rain. It had been downpouring for two days now, and where most people would be irritated by the weather, one individual was not.
Egon Spengler absolutely loved the rain. The calmness it brought with it, the smell of it, the sound of it hitting his windows, he loved all of it. He sat in the upper lab at the Ghostbusters firehouse, happily working on some lab reports as music played lightly in the background.
He heard Janine greet someone downstairs and listened to the loud footsteps coming up the stairs. He looked up to see his friend and coworker, Y/N, absolutely soaked. They stood there frowning, their wet hair dripping into small puddles on the floor.
“I hate the rain.” they said, beginning to shed off their wet clothing.
Egon left his work and assisted Y/N in taking off their soaked sneakers. He sat on the ground as Y/N lifted their feet for him. He pulled them both off and then grabbed the shoes as well as the rest of the wet clothing. He discarded it into a small laundry basket by the bedroom door.
“Why are you so soaked? You didn’t think to bring an umbrella?” Egon asked, grabbing a warm blanket to drape over Y/N’s shoulders.
They took the blanket, wrapping it tightly around them. “The forecast said light showers. So I assumed a two block walk from my apartment here would not result in this.” They said, motioning to their current damp self.
Egon began making a hot cup of Chamomile tea, Y/N’s favorite. He smiled at his pouty partner. “I could have told you the forecast was wrong.”
“That’s not making me feel any better, Egon.” Y/N groaned, sitting down at the table Egon was previously working at.
Egon laughed quietly as he poured the hot tea into a mug. He walked it over to the table, sitting down for Y/N as they gulped down their tea. He watched as they still shivered, even when their cup was empty.
He suddenly stood up and held out his arms. Y/N looked at him curiously.
“What on Earth are you doing?” they asked.
“Offering up my body heat to better warm you.” Egon said, still standing with his arms wide open.
“You hate hugs.”
“Well, I wouldn’t say I hate them, but nonetheless, this is an expectation. Now, I suggest you take me up on the offer before I change my mind.” Egon said, beginning to close his arms to add effect.
Y/N sprang up and wrapped their arms around his warm torso. Egon smiled to himself as he felt Y/N snuggle closer into his chest. They stood together for about five minutes, much longer than Egon anticipated. He gently pulled away and Y/N frowned.
“I’m still cold.” they said.
“Let’s go lay down, my legs are getting tired from standing this long. My knees were beginning to lock.” Egon said, beginning making his way to the sleeping quarters.
Y/N smiled as they followed Egon into the room. They quickly snuggled into Egon’s side, throwing a large comforter and the blanket Egon had previously given them over the both of them.
As they lay there, Y/N began laughing quietly to themselves. Egon looked down at them, “What’s so funny?”
“A hug and cuddling in one day, I must be dreaming.” Y/N said in between chuckles.
Egon rolled his eyes and looked back at the ceiling, “Don’t push your luck, L/N”
They continued laughing and Egon rolled onto his side, taking his body heat away with him. Y/N whined loudly, “Come back! I’ll stop laughing.”
Egon smiled and came back, getting comfortable with Y/N once again. Egon listening to Y/N’s quiet breaths as they lay together. After about twenty minutes of laying there, he looked down at Y/N, who was fast asleep.
He smiled to himself and wrapped his arms tighter around Y/N’s torso. He now had yet another reason to absolutely love the rain.

Steve Harrington sucks.
Steve Harrington x Henderson!reader
A/N: Yay! My first request done!🎉✨ Please don’t hesitate to request anything, and I hope you enjoy. Sorry it tooks so long, I just started school.
Summary: (Y/n) Henderson has been through some shit in her 17 years. Her father leaving, an overprotective mother, bullies, interdimensional monsters, government conspiracies, etc. Needless to say her life was constantly changing.  There was one thing that will always remain the same though. And that was the hatred she has for the one and only Steve Harrington.
Request from anon.
Masterlist
Tumblr media
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
 You and Steve have never seen eye to eye. You haven’t for a very long time. You two used to be best friends, but that was a long time ago. Before high school and cliques mattered, and before Steve was known as “King Steve.” But once you two entered freshman year, Steves popularity rose and you were left behind.
Even though you and Steve no longer associated with each other, that didn’t stop you two from fighting any chance you got.
You two argued about everything. If you said the sky is blue, Steve would argue that its actually purple. No kidding, he actually made the argument that the sky was purple. Needless to say, you two hated each other.
“Steve, I swear if you don’t move your feet I’ll--”
“You’ll what Y/n, please tell me what you’ll do?
“ I’ll take your feet and shove it up you---”
“Can you guys not...”
It was always like this. Ever since Steve started dating Nancy it was like he was always there. And because Nancy was your best friend, you got reacquainted with the King of Hawkins High.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After everything Will with through with the Upside down and El, you were relieved that it was over. You could go back to your normal life of being a big sister and being top of the class. But then your brother started acting weird.
It started on Halloween, he came home and was holding his ghost trap thing from Ghostbusters weirdly. You thought it was a rat or something at first but something seemed off.
Then Mews went missing. Mews was given to you on your thirteenth birthday, so loosing her was devastating to you. You still had faith that she just ran out and was lost somewhere in the woods. You spent hours looking for her but no dice so far. You were in your room when your mom called you from the kitchen.
“Yeah?!” you shouted, finishing up some missing flyers for Mews.
“Can you go find Dusty for me? It’s getting dark outside.” After the incident with Will and Barb, the parents became a lot more wary when it came to being out after dark.
Rolling your eyes, you get up from your small desk and walk out to the kitchen where your mom is. As you get closer, you smell the weird concoction your mother is making on the stove. Your mom wasn’t the best cook.
“Did he mention where he was going?” you ask, scrunching up your face at the sight of the...stew??
“He mentioned something about Lucas and a code red?? Whatever that means.”
“Code red?” you ask, you weren’t too nervous because code red could mean anything. and Dustin tends to be over dramatic. But still, a small voice in the back of your head is warning you.
“I’m not too sure dear. Would you like to have a taste before you leave?” aaand that was your cue to leave. You start rushing to the door
“Sorry mom! I better go find Dustin before it gets to late.”
You start to make your way down the road when a flash of red catches your eye, you walk towards it . You realize its just some pieces of meat. Then you see what looks like a trail. Leading from your basement to the woods. A bad feeling settles in your stomach, and before you go in the woods, you get a hockey stick that you wrapped with barb wire a few months ago just incase.
Then you follow the trail of meat into the woods.
You follow the trail till it leads you to the junkyard. By the time you got there it was already dark and surprisingly foggy.
“Dustin?!!” You shout, seeing the pile of meat stopping. You step over it as you walk around shouting for your brother.
“Hello!!? Dustin this isn’t funny, moms worried about you.”
And that's when you heard it. A low growling sound. Right behind you.
“Y/N!! WATCH OUT”
You spin around to see what looked like a demogorgon, but on all fours like a dog. And it was slowly walking towards you. Growling as it stepped closer and closer. Your heart was beating out of your chest as you tighten your grip on the hockey stick. Adrenaline rushing through your body. Your senses heightened as you focused on the creature in front of you. You lowered your body into a crouch to prepare for an attack. You slowly backed away slowly as it stalked toward you. You heard what sounded like Lucas or Dustin tell you to run but you knew if you turned around, that thing would pounce on you and you’d be dead. And if you died, what would happen to your brother? To Lucas?
Then the demodog lunged at you. The muscles in its leg tightened as it jumped toward you. You held your breath as you swung the stick with all your might, hitting the monster in mid air. It yelped as its body was flung sideways. It layed there for a moment them leaped up on all fours again, You backed away but never took your eyes off it.
“Holy shit what is she doing” a girl??
“YEAH THATS MY SISTER!” Dustin
“Y/N THREE O’CLOCK! THREE O’CLOCK!” shit.
You can see another figure moving in your peripheral vison. Another one. You position your body so your able to see both dogs at the same time, but then you hear chirping and growling from all ends. You were being surrounded.
“STEVE WHAT ARE YOU DOING?”
Then, Steve Harrington runs out of a broke down bus, bat in hand as he settles up behind you.
“What the hell are you doing here Harrington?”
“Saving your ass Henderson, what does it look like?”
“I had this under control”
“Oh yeah, being surrounded definitely screams under control.”
You aren’t given a chance to respond as another demodog leaps at you and Steve, forcing you to swing out and hit it again straight in the head. Another dog leaps at Steve, and he manages to hit it with the bat.
“We’re going to die if we stay here” you say assessing the situation.
“ No shit sherlock.”
“Shut up and listen” You shout. “you run back to the bus. You need to protect the kids. I’m going to distract these fuckers. When I say the word, you open the bus door and let me in. These things hunt in packs, so they won’t chase both of us if I run first.”
“Henderson thats--” You don’t hear the rest as you dash from the spot. As predicted the dogs chase you and don’t pay no mind to Steve. You can see Steve reluctantly run back to the bus as you take a lap around the junkyard. You have to hit some more dogs but you manage to get back where you were.
Then you were tackled. Dropping your stick you scream in pain as the demodog digs it claws in your shoulder. You struggled to get your stick as the other dogs get closer and the one on top of you is lowering its flower mouth to your throat.
“Y/N” you hear your brother scream desperately. You find the strength to kick the dog off of you and launch yourself off the ground. You scoop up the hockey stick and swat the other dog that was in your way as you sprint towards the bus.
“NOW STEVE LET ME IN” You screech as you near the bus. The doors slide open as hands wrap around your arms and pull you in.
You lay there for a few seconds breathless. Muscles burning and ears ringing. You ignore the kids talking over each other and Dutsin fretting over you. You just breath, feeling a bit safer than you did outside. Then something rams into the side of the bus. The kids start screaming and Steve shouts something. You gather your strength once more and stand up, your body screaming at you. You see those demon dogs are trying to get in through the roof. You watch Steve start fighting them as you push the kids behind you. You step forward to help when suddenly they stop. Then they all run away and its quiet. After a few moments you feel weak and slump to the floor.
“Woah woah, Henderson” Steve surges forward and grabs you by the shoulders, you hiss in pain as he grabs the wound, “Shit, this is bad”
“Bad? What do you mean bad? How bad??” Dustin questions, his eyes watering at the thought of loosing his sister.
“I’m fine Dusty.” You say standing up. “ It probably just needs a cleaning and some stitches that all.”
‘You look like you should be an extra in a WW2 documentary.” Steve deadpans. “You should go home.”
You roll your eyes “ Oh like YOU would know what that would look like, you don’t even show up to history class.”
“ That's not the point Henderson, your arm is about to fall off.”
“I am not leaving these kids here defenseless.” you say crossing your arms, but wince as you do.
“First of all they have me, and second of all, you can’t even move your arm! You’d be in the way.”
“ I’m sorry but who was the one that distracted those things? Who came up with that plan to get you back in the bus??” you say, annoyed at the accusation of being useless.
“she has a point” muttered Lucas, earning him a smack in the arm by Max and a glare from Steve.
“Listen Harrington” You say poking him in the chest. “ I’m fine, im not going anywhere, and I can kick your ass even with my arm fucked up. Now we’re going to get out of this FUCKING bus and figure out what the fuck is going on. AM I CLEAR?”
A shocked silence settles in the bus. Lucas and Dustin chuckled and Max smirked in admiration. Steve glared at you, simply saying “Crystal” and turned around marching off the bus. You roll your eyes as Lucas and Max get off as well, leaving only you and your brother.
“That was really badass. The way you fought those demodogs back there.” Dustin said looking up at you.
You smile and ruffle his hair.
“ I wasn’t going to let them get my Dusty Bun” You say in a baby tone pulling him in for a hug. He groans at the name but hugs you back.
“HENDERSONS MOVE YOUR ASSES” Steve shouts. You roll your eyes and nudge Dustin towards the door.
“Come on, before King Steve blows a gasket”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You find out that Dart killed Mews and are absolutely devastated. Dustin felt guilty as he was basically the reason why your beloved cat died.
“It’s fine Dustin, now I have even more of a reason to kick their doggy ass.”
You walk ahead of the group seething in anger and fear. Your arm was still sluggishly bleeding and throbbing in pain.
“You really should do something about that shoulder” Steve said as he walks up next to you.
“Sure, let me just stop at the hospital while my brother and his friends chase flesh eating dogs from another dimension.” you reply in an sarcastic tone.
“I’m just trying to help.” Steve says in a soft tione
You roll your eyes and mutter a fine. You then rip a strip of fabric from the bottom of your shirt and wrap it around your shoulder.
‘There are you happy now?”you ask
Steve is stunned, he never realized how...tough you are.In fact this whole experience has made him realize how smart and resilient you’ve become. Far different from the shy quiet girl you used to be when the two of you were friends. He never wanted to stop being your friend, in fact he even harbored a little crush on you but he just got caught up in the popularity and attention. Then he got with Nancy and started seeing you constantly again, only now you hated him. It hurt him in ways he didn’t understand. And while he’ll always love Nancy, he’s starting to realize that maybe he’s starting to fall in love with you too.
You look at him weird, as he just stared at you with this weird look on his face. You walked past him as the entrance to the lab becomes clear.
“Hey guys” You shout. “We’re here.”
Then you hear it. Bone chilling roars fill the air. The lights are out inside the lab and you can hear the screams of the people inside. and then rustling comes from the woods. You push the kids behind you and Steve as you tighten the grip on your weapons.
“Steve?” “Y/n?’
“Nancy?’” “Jonathan?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After finding out El was actually alive and Will’s interrogation, you officially have seen it all. You, Steve, and the rest of the kids stayed in the Byers house while the “A team” went back to the lab. You finally were cleaning your shoulder when you heard the rumble of an engine.
Great Billy Hargrove.
“It’s my brother! If he catches me here he’ll kill me” Max says, he tone laced in fear. You and Steve look at each other, and then Steve walks out to deal with Billy.
“Quick hide and don’t let him see you” you say moving toward the door. You open it in time to see Billy knock Steve down and kick him. You flinch and are just glad that it wasn’t you.
“Oh” Billy coos, “ Are you gonna let me in Princess or am I gonna have to move you?”
“Moving me sounds fun, how about we try that” you flirt back, hey anything to get him to calm down.
He chuckles. “Nice try toots but I got a bone to pick with my step sister.” And with that she shoves you out of the way. You realize that you can’t fight Billy off alone, so you run to help Steve.
“Come on Harrington, up you go” You try and help him up. You hear the kids shouting and some stuff smashing. “Come on Steve, he’s on there with the kids.” You say urgently.
“I’m gonna kill him.” Steve says, finally getting up. You and Steve rush into the house to see Billy holding Lucas up against a shelf. Steve then rushes to the two, as you go to the kids making sure they’re behind you.
“YOU’RE DEAD SINCLAIR, SO DEAD”
“No, you are” and with that Steve punches Billy in the face. You pull Lucas away, checking him over to make sure he’s alright. The kids are cheering Steve on as he beats Billy.
“KICK HIS ASS STEVE”
Then the tables turn. Billy smashes a plate over Steves head, knocking him down and punching him in the face. They get into the living room and Billy isn’t stopping. He’s punching Steve in the face continuously.
“STOP YOU’RE GONNA KILL HIM” Dustin screams
“BILLY NO”
You rush forward and try to pull him off. “Billy thats enough, he’s already down!” he just pushes you to the ground and resumes his beating. You get up, desperate to help Steve.
“Y/n!” You hear Max yell.  You look at her and she hands you something.
Will’s morphine.
Without a second thought you ripped the cap off the needle and injected the drug in Billy’s neck. He flinched and stood up, giving poor Steve a break from his brutal beating.
“youbitchwhatdidyoudo” He slurred as he pulled the needle from his neck. He then fell on his back, half unconscious. Max, surprising you all, took Steves bat and yelled.
“From now on you leave me and my friends alone, you understand?!”
“Screw you.”
She brought down the bat between his legs. Your eyes widened as she slammed the nail covered bat on the floor between them.
“SAY YOU UNDERSTAND. SAY IT! SAY IT!”
“I understand” Billy finally whispered as the drugs took over. After watching that you ran over to Steve. You checked his pulse just to make sure he was alright.
“Alright Harrington, get up” You said. “Come on Steve.”
“Y/n, we don’t have time.” Mike said. “We have to help El.”
“How are you even going to the tunnels Mike? It’s too far to walk.” You say as you put Steve's head on your lap.
Max then walks up to Billy and pulls his keys out of his jacket. “Y/n can drive us.” she says. Then the whole party laughs. “What? What's so funny?”
“Y/n can’t drive us” Dustin said laughing. You glare at him from your spot.
“Why not?” Max asks.
“Because” Mike replies, “ She failed like three of her drivings tests”
“Yeah, unless you want to hit every mail box on the way and get whiplash, y/n is out” Lucas chimed in.
“Hey! I was not that bad” you yelled incredulously. “ Besides what would we do with Steve?”
“Leave him here?” Mike said
“With Billy?” You asked
“Yeah we could just tie Billy up or something”
“We are not leaving Steve” Dustin said. “He’ll be chill when he wakes up, I promise.”
“We still can’t go” you say. The group groans
“Why not” Mike says
“Because, I can’t drive you.” You reply. Then Max ‘s face brightens
“I can drive.” She says
Suddenly, you’re in the backseat of Billy's stolen car, Steve sprawled across yours, Mikes, and Dustin's lap as Max drives erratically to the field.
And then Steve wakes up.
“y/n??” He mutters looking at Mike, Mike gives him the side eye as Dustin starts talking.
“Hey buddy” Dustin says “ He kicked your ass but you put up a good fight”
“Dustin!” you shout
“What?”
‘Oh god” Steve says realizing what was happening “ Oh my god stop the car!!”
“Steve I promised them you’d be cool if we brought you”
“oh god
“Make a left here” “you’re okay”
“Steve relax she’s driven before”
“yeah in a parking lot””That counts!”
“Stop yelling!”
“Stop the car, stop the car” Max takes a sharp turn
“WOAHH” “STOPTHE CAR”
“Steve calm down” “I told you we should have left him!’“
“AHH SLOW DOWN” “CALM DOWN”
“EVERYBODY SHUT UP! I’M TRYING TO FOCUS”
Max hits the breaks as she makes to to the field. You all stumble out of the car and head to the trunk, getting ready to head into the tunnels. As you’re putting on your mask and goggles Steve stumbles to the back of the car yelling,
“HELLO! Do you guys hear me, we are not going down there!”
“Y/n how could you let them talk you into his” “ARE YOU DEAF? HELLO?
“WE ARE NOT---”
“STEVE!” Dustin shouted, “The fact of the matter is that a party member needs our assistance. We can’t just abandon her.”
“...fine” Steve says, and he puts on the bandana and goggles. You walk up to him and hand him his bat. “ Wow Harrington, you’ve never looked better”
“Ha ha, get in the hole”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After struggling to get into the hole, you finally made it into the tunnels. It was dark and damp in there. Cold as you and the party walked further and further into what could be your doom. Specks of...something floated in the air and the walls were covered in what looked like vines. Steve was at the from of the line while you were at the end.Making sure both ends were covered and there wasn’t any chance at a sneak attack.
You stood at the back with Dustin as he kneeled down to tie his shoe and then a flurry of that white shit sprayed in his face. He started freaking out immediatly, screming and spitting
“SHIIT! ITS IN MY MOUTH!”
Steve ran over to him and started asking whats wrong. Seeing Steve so worried about your brother warmed your heart, especially because it’s been so long that Dustin had a male figure who cared about him in his life. Now that you think about it, Steve has been really protective over Dustin these past few days, in fact he--
“Hey Y/n, are you okay” Steve says, interrupting your thought.
You look at him and nod, “We should keep going”
He nods and take his place back in the front. The group only had to walk a few more steps till they reached the hub,
“Let’s torch it” Steve said as he stepped forward. The kids spread out, pouring gasoline on every inch of the  cavern.  After you were done, Steve pulled out his lighter and flicked it on.
“You ready?” He said. You all nodded and prepared to run for your life. Steve threw the lighter and the whole hub was lit. The everyone ran. Mike got caught as a vine wrapped around his leg. Steve struggled to it get off when you came around.
“Stand back!” you yelled and swung you hockey stick down on the vine a couple times. This cut it in half as you heard it..squeal?? You then helped Mike up and urged him to start running. You were almost back to the hole when you were stopped.
A demodog stood in the way of your freedom. Hunched low and growling as it wait for you to make your move. Thats when Dustin spoke up.
“Dart” “Shh Dustin get behind me” You shushed him, trying to pull him away from the creature but with no luck. He slowly walked toward iy.
“Dustin what are you doing?””Get away from it” the rest of the group whispered as he pulled a candy bar from his pocket.
“yumm nougat” He said, breaking the candy bar into pieces and fed them to the demon dog. ‘There you go buddy, eat up” He then waved to you.
“hurry up go” He said still crouched down. Carefully, each member of the party passed by. Creeping passed the demodog who paid no attention.
“Bye buddy” Dustin whispered as you and Steve pulled him away.
You finally got to the hole. You and Steve helped each of the kids up the rope. Rushing as you heard the rest of the demodogs running to find you. You finally got Dustin up the rope when you saw them. The pack of demodogs running full speed toward you and Steve. There was no time for either of you to get up the rope. Steve pulled you into his chest as the pack drew nearer. You tensed up, waiting to get torn apart by these creatures.
“Y/N! STEVE” Dustin cried, being held back by Mike and Lucas.
The closer they got the harder it was for you to breath. You closed your eyes and dug your face into Steves chest.
They ran past you. The demodogs run right passed you and Steve as if you weren’t there. You feel them run past your legs, bumping into you as they are called somewhere else.
You sigh in relief . You look around the cavern, realizing you’re not dead. Steve laughs a breathless laugh as you smile, the threat of death gone. You realize that you’re still pressed up against him, and look up. Staring into the brown eyes of the one and only Steve Harrington. His goggles pulled up against his forehead and his bandana around his neck.
You don’t know if the adrenaline or you not giving a fuck, but you fling off your safety glasses, pull down your bandana ans surge up.
Capturing Steve’s lips in a kiss.
He makes a little ‘oomph” sound in surprise as he realizes what's happening. But then he relaxes and kisses you back, wrapping his arms around your waist. Your hands go into his hair as you wrap your arms around his neck, prompting him to  lean closer. His tongue brushes against your bottom lip and you begin to let it in when--
“OH GOD, REALLY?”
Dustin. “GUYS THEY'RE MAKING OUT’”
“Ewww, come on do you really gotta do that here” Lucas complains.
“Yeah! we don’t wanna see that” Mike says, frowning in disgust.
“Come on’ Max says, pulling Dustin and Lucas by the collar of their shirts. Mike following behind them.
You pull away from Steve, giggling as you see the awe struck face he's making.
“Come on King Steve” You say, starting to crawl up the rope. “Before Max starts joy riding and leaves us here. He shakes his head as he watches you get to the top and starts climbing.
“Hold your horses Henderson, I’m coming.”
Ooh 27 for natsuyuu but make it about youkai maybe, or exorcists???
PROMPTS LIST
27. “We have five people trying to kill us right now, what are we supposed to do?” “Actually, it’s more like eight.” “Oh, sorry I wasn’t specific enough!”
x
Nishimura never thought he’d be here, crouching under a window with his best friends so that the tall figure prowling around outside doesn’t catch a glimpse of them.
Kitamoto is clutching one of Satoru’s hands and one of Natsume’s. He looks like he’s very carefully not freaking out.
“It’ll be alright,” Natsume says gently. “I’ll make sure you get home.”
“We’re not going anywhere without you, idiot,” Kitamoto says without missing a beat.
“Oh-- no, I know, that’s not what I-- “
“Focus up!” Nishimura hisses. “We have five people trying to kill us right now, what are we supposed to do?”
“Actually, it’s more like eight,” Natsume says apologetically. “A few of them brought their shiki.”
“Oh! I’m sorry I wasn’t specific enough!”
Natsume winces, but he doesn’t clam up the way he used to when they were kids. They’re in university now, and they share an apartment right down the hall from the apartment Shibata, Taki and Tanuma share, and Natsume has come a long way from the shy ghost he was when they first met.
But this situation seems to be a bit more personal than most. Natsume has been on edge ever since they left the udon booth, glancing over his shoulder as if they were being followed, even though the street was winter-dark and mostly empty.
“They aren’t trying to kill us,” Natsume mutters. “It’s more of a, uh... recruitment pitch.”
“Wait, is this that weird guy with the eyepatch that tried to kidnap you in high school?” Kitamoto asks. “How did he figure out where you live?”
“He has a lot of connections,” Natsume says, sounding more weary than worried. “And a powerful family.”
“That’s not okay,” Kitamoto says with a mighty scowl. “I’m calling mom when we get home. She and her partners at the firm eat creeps like him for breakfast.”
Nishimura’s phone buzzes. It’s Shibata in the group chat, asking where the hell they are with dinner. Nishimura, acutely aware of the bags of food going cold next to him, texts back, We’re ghostbusting, don’t bother us.
Tanuma: Wait what?
Shibata: It’s a school night!!!
Nishimura slides his phone away and peeks out the window. He doesn’t see anyone, but it’s possible he’s looking right at a ghost. He quickly changes his mind about peeking out the window.
“What now?” he asks.
“Sensei said he would take care of it,” Natsume reassures.
Resigned, Nishimura digs into the bags and passes his friends each a to-go container of the udon and a sleeve of disposable chopsticks. They’re both looking at him strangely, and he scowls.
“Well, we’re just sitting here anyway! And I’m cold!”
When Natori shoves his worried way into the building around ten minutes later, frazzled and frantic, it looks as though the last thing he expected was to find the three of them sitting comfortably on the floor, eating soup and watching a vine compilation on Kitamoto’s phone.
Nyanko-sensei waddles past him and announces, “I scared the weaklings away and brought back-up! Give me tempura!”
Natori puts his face in his hands and just stands there without talking for a minute. And to think, he thought Natsume moving to the city with his friends would make his life more convenient.
“I was under the impression you were in danger,” Natori says, muffled.
“I mean, kind of,” Kitamoto points out. “We had to hide in here from Eyepatch-san. We’re gonna sue the hell out of him.”
“Come eat Shibata’s udon,” Nishimura pipes up, offering up another container. “You’ll feel better.”
“Your friends are weird, Natsume,” Natori mutters. He looks like he regrets every decision he made that brought him to this place, which is kind of rude. They’re just sitting here. “Please get up off the floor and pack up your food. I’m taking you home.”
“Hey, quick hypothetical question, how angry will you be if we get there and Taki has those taboo circles drawn everywhere?” Nishimura asks.
Natori stares at him really hard and says, “Very angry.”
“Okay, cool, just wondering,” Nishimura replies, and pulls his phone out to text her a warning. Natori pinches the bridge of his nose and counts to ten.
“Up,” he says shortly. “Out. Before we get arrested. I’m not having that conversation with any of your parents.”
“It’s okay, my mom’s a lawyer,” Kitamoto says, at which point Natori begins physically steering them out of the building.
His annoyance seems born of very real worry, and Nishimura feels bad enough that he falls into step with Kitamoto agreeably.
Behind them, barely loud enough to be heard over the sounds of the traffic, Natsume says, “I’m really sorry if you were busy. I just-- I hate dealing with Matoba by myself. My friends in Yatsuhara were powerful enough together that I only had to call on them to make him go away, but I don’t have them here.”
Nishimura glances back in time to watch Natori ruffle Natsume’s hair. That cocktail of irritation and ill-concealed concern seems to have been left behind in that abandoned building, because Natori is smiling now. Not his charming TV smile, but a better one.
“You may not have them anymore, but you’re far from friendless. And when you need help, you don’t have to second-guess it. Just call me, and I’ll be there.”
Natsume knocks his hand away, but he’s smiling, too. Back into the groove of being the Cool And Hip Older Friend, Natori slings an arm around Kitamoto’s shoulder and says, “Now, please tell me in on the suing Matoba scheme. I have money, fame and connections.”
“Sure! I’m gonna call my mom on Skype as soon as we get home.”
“Wait, were you serious about that?” Natsume blurts, wide-eyed.
“We just got chased through the city by ghosts with an agenda,” Nishimura reminds him, “and ate soup in an abandoned building while we waited for your bodyguard to tell us it was safe to leave. If Acchan doesn’t call Auntie, I will.”
Still, Nishimura thinks, bag of cold food swinging at his side, his friends’ animated voices filling the December air all around him as they plot legal revenge, there are worse ways to spend an evening.
Out of This World
Niki watches despairingly as her new roommate, one Mr. Wilbur Soot, once again pours water into his cereal. He seems to prefer it that way; Niki can’t help but wonder, not for the first time, whether her roommate is a literal alien from outer space, or just the weirdest motherfucker she’s ever met.
What kind of a last name is Soot, anyway? She thinks to herself unkindly. At least he doesn’t leave dirty clothes on the floor for her to clean up like her last roommate did. But seriously, Niki can’t tell if this man is a crackhead or not.
“Niki, can you pass the salt?” Wilbur says, breaking her out of her reverie. Without thinking, she plucks it from the lowest shelf of the tiny kitchen cabinet and hands it to him. She regrets it instantly when he begins to salt his cereal.
Breathing deeply so as not to grab him by his bony shoulders and shout, “What the fuck is wrong with you?!”, she flees the scene of the food crime. When Niki was in college, she was surrounded by people who asserted they had the world figured out. Atoms and gravity and wavelengths. But Niki knows that humanity is desperate to control the uncontrollable, define that which cannot be explained. Science, Niki knows, isn’t just throwing out what doesn’t fit, but rather taking all the data and asking the question, “Why?” So, she thinks, let’s consider the data.
-------
Niki sneaks trepidatiously to the door to Wilbur’s bedroom. Who knows what sort of unholy, confusing mess he’s got in there, lurking in wait for its next unsuspecting victim. A pinch of guilt hits her. Yeah, Wilbur may be a lunatic, but an alien? Really? It’s a bit uncharitable of her to think such a thing. Shaking herself, she knocks on the door.
“Yes?” Wilbur’s voice carries from inside the room. “Come in.”
Steeling herself, she turns the doorknob with a sweaty palm and is faced with…
A bed. A desk with a computer on it. Two pairs of shoes lined neatly near the closet. Wilbur is taking off his headphones-- he was playing Minecraft. How… ordinary of him.
“Hi, Wilbur. Sorry to interrupt, I just wanted, uh, to see how you were settling in.”
Wilbur smiles his pretty smile. “Thank you. Quite unaccustomed am I to the comforts of-- apartments.”
What Yoda-ass kind of phrasing is that? Niki thinks. A figurine of the marshmallow man from Ghostbusters stares her down from its place on Wilbur’s desk. She meets its eyes warily.
“Oh! Noticed my Ghostbusters statuette, have you?” Wilbur says brightly. “I have more in my closet, if you should like to see them.”
Niki is filled with a sick sense of curiosity. Yes, she wants to see whatever insane thing Wilbur hides in his closet, but she also doesn’t. She idly wonders if Wilbur has ever read The Cask of Amontillado. She feels like he has. This is not comforting.
Wilbur doesn’t sense her hesitation. A small corner of her brain thinks it’s because he’s unfamiliar with human body language. Without pause, Wilbur opens the closet door, revealing…
Niki’s first thought is, where does he keep his clothes? Because the closet is filled with Ghostbusters paraphernalia. The entire. Fucking. Closet. It wasn’t even that great of a movie?? How much did Wilbur spend on this, anyway?
Her roommate misinterprets her blank uncomprehending stare as a marveling gaze. He puffs up proudly.
“Such a profound impact have these movies made! I am truly fortunate to have met a lass of such upstanding artistic caliber, that you should also enjoy the Ghostbusters franchise.”
“Thank you for showing me this,” she says slowly. “I need to-- water the dog. I mean, I left the stove on. At my friend’s house. Uh, see you later.”
She beats a hasty retreat, leaving her apartment for Eret’s place. Something whispers in the depths of her mind: Doesn’t one of the Ghostbusters movies have aliens in it?
-------
Orange is her favorite nail polish color. Eret paints the nails on her right hand in that soft warm shade of orange as he listens to her complain.
“Am I being irrational? Like, do you think I’m going too far?”
Eret hums noncommittally, putting a little flamingo sticker on her index nail. “He does sound like an unusual person, but I don’t know if I would say he’s an alien.”
Niki nods her head, since she can’t gesture with her hands. “Okay, yeah, sure-- but he puts salt in his cereal with water. He has a literal dragon’s hoard of memorabilia from shitty movies that came out like three decades ago. And his vibe is just...off. Like when I talk to him, he’s there, but his head’s drifting off somewhere in outer space. God, I’m the worst.”
Eret protests. “Hey, hey, you’re not the worst. Look. I don’t know why this dude is bugging you out so much, but you said he didn’t seem dangerous, right?”
Niki nods dejectedly.
“So, we can figure this out together,” Eret says with a flourish, screwing the top back onto the bottle of polish.
The tender moment is interrupted by Niki’s ringtone. It’s from Wilbur; speak of the devil and he shall appear. Gingerly, so as not to ruin the wet paint on her nails, she picks up the phone and puts it on speaker. “Hello?” she says, motioning for Eret to remain quiet.
“Ahoy, Niki! Wherefore are mine frog legs gone?”
“What?” Eret mouths at her. Niki doesn’t understand either.
“Sorry, Wilbur, what was that?”
“My frog legs,” comes the crackly timbre of a phone in an area with poor reception. “They are no longer in the refrigerator.”
Niki sputters. “Why did you have frog legs in the-- no, never mind. I don’t know what happened to your frog legs, Wilbur.”
The phone line repeats static to her for a moment as Wilbur pauses. “Interesting. Perhaps they walked away, as legs are so oft wont to do. Niki, would you mind dearly to purchase some more? And perhaps, be you willing, some condensed milk?”
Eret silently gags at the idea of frog legs and condensed milk together. Niki doesn’t blame him.
“Okay,” Niki says.
Eret shakes his head at her, as though begging her not to torture herself like this. The moment Niki hangs up, the first words out of Eret’s mouth are, “That man is one hundred percent an alien. I am so sorry I ever doubted you.”
-------
With frog legs, condensed milk, and an Eret in tow, Niki enters her apartment the following morning with new-found assurance. The rest of the evening goes about as normal as it can, with Wilbur humming nursery rhymes and stirring a pot of, quite frankly, poison. Niki and Eret hide in the living room watching all the Ghibli movies until the only light left comes from the TV in front of them. The front door opens and the floors creak as Will enters. I thought he was in his room?
Eret seems to be on the same page as her. “I didn’t hear him leave,” he says, distant fear in his eyes.
Niki’s ears pick up a faint sound. “Shh!” she hisses. “He’s on the phone.”
Though the apartment is dark (the only light being the TV), Wilbur’s eyes glow like an animal caught on camera. Niki shivers. She only barely catches a glimpse before he ducks back into the entrance hallway, but what she sees unnerves her.
“Philza, calm down,” Wilbur says from the hallway as he takes off his shoes. “It is fine, she suspects not.”
A pause. The other person on the line, Philza, is talking.
Wilbur replies, “She was impressed with my Ghostbusters collection, you know-- Ghostbusters is a great movie, fuck off!”
Another pause. Wilbur sighs.
“Aye, I must admit you may have been right on that one. Pretending to be human is--”
“I FUCKING KNEW IT!”
Wilbur’s head peers around the hallway’s corner in a panic to see Niki and Eret. Niki is pointing her finger at Wilbur with pride on her face, and Eret looks as though he wants to be doing the same thing.
The two in the living room both flush a bit at the outburst, but Niki doggedly continues. “You’re an alien!”
Even though Wilbur’s phone isn’t on speaker, Niki and Eret hear Philza’s laughter from all the way across the room. Wilbur sputters and angrily hangs up the phone, before turning the corner to properly face the two humans. His eyes are actually glowing, it wasn’t a trick of the light, Eret observes. Of course, he also notes that Wilbur’s eyes are the size of dinner plates, and he looks about ready to jump out the window to run from them.
“I am… not an alien,” Wilbur says softly.
“Wh-- but you just said--” Eret says, then cuts himself off when Wilbur phases through the fucking floor.
“He’s a ghost,” Niki whispers, all the pieces clicking into place. Old English, weird taste in food, Ghostbusters are you kidding me. If Niki didn’t just watch her roommate evaporate, she’d be banging her head against a wall and asking her professors to revoke her degree.
Wilbur phases back up through the floor, much closer this time but still hesitant. He sits down a few feet away from the pair of humans nervously. He’s more afraid of us than we are of him, Niki thinks. Like the bears at the zoo.
“For many years, observed the living have I,” Wilbur begins slowly. “I wished to commune with them once again, as one of their own. My father-- Philza-- said unto me that I knew nothing of the modern era. I confess that he was right. Willst you cast me out of your home, knowing now of the spectre that I am?”
Niki tries and fails to suppress the amused quirk of her eyebrow. “How about this: Eret and I show you the ropes of being alive in the 21st century, and in return, you keep the frog legs on your side of the fridge?”
Wilbur smiles that pretty smile again. “Deal.”
“Niki? What is an OnlyFans?”
Chapter 2: Trick or Treat, Freak
Summary: After Will sees something terrible on trick-or-treat night, Mike wonders whether Eleven’s still out there. Nancy wrestles the truth about Barb. Dustins sister finally talks to Mad Max, but doesn’t get the response she wanted.
Tag list; @folly-olly @chinchillagirl18
Story list; Chapter 1
Note; Damn I suck at keeping up with series’, I’m sorry it took me five months to get the second chapter in, school and work is keeping me (too) occupied! I also started improvising in the end because my Netflix has been cutting out, and I don’t know the episode word-for-word by heart!
Tumblr media
“Oh! I want to see those pearly whites!”
You and Dustin are dressed all out. Gray suits and large backpacks, each holding your own proton blaster. Side by side, you aim your blasters at one another, smiling at the camera your mother held up,
“Who you gonna call?” Claudia hums the Ghostbusters theme song, and laughs when you purposefully hit Dustin in the shoulder with your blaster.
You skid your bike to a stop just outside the school, laughing when Will runs up, yelling, “Ghostbusters!”
“Hey, Spengler!”
“Egon!”
“Venkman!”
“Whoa whoa.” Mike pulls you away from Lucas, pointing to Lucas’ name tag on his suit, “Why are you Venkman?”
“Because I’m Venkman.” Lucas states, Mike shaking his head. “No, I’m Venkman.”
“Why can’t there just be two Venkmans?” Will asks, innocently, Mike scoffing and glaring at Lucas. “Because there’s only one Venkman in real life. We planned this months ago.”
Mike presses a hand to his chest. “I’m Venkman. Y/N’s Barrett, Dustin’s Stantz, Will’s Egon, and you’re Winston.”
“I specifically didn’t agree to Winston.” Lucas crosses his arms, Mikes eyes widening in an ‘are you serious’ expression. “Yes, you did!”
“I don’t think he did.” You look at Will, who shakes his head. “No one wants to be Winston.”
“What’s wrong with Winston?” Mike looks at you, and you press your lips together, tightly. “Winston joined the team super late, he’s not really funny, or a scientist.”
“Yeah but he’s still cool.”
“If hes so cool.” Lucas snips, “Then you be Winston.”
“I cant.” Mike sighs, and your eyes scan the school yard as they continue to argue, furrowed brows relaxing with realization. “Shit.” You face the group, “Guys?”
The four boys look at you, and you point past them, to the kids getting off the bus. “Why is no one else wearing costumes?”
Standing at your lockers side by side, Will watches you unzip your suit and step out of it. “You wore clothes underneath?”
“You didnt?” You pick up the suit and bag and shove them into your locker, slamming it shut before picking up your bookbag, turning and jerking to a stop to stare at Max, who rolled down the hall towards you on her skateboard.Your eyes watch as she skids to a stop in front of her locker, putting her board inside and grabbing her books for the next class.
“You really like her, huh?” You blink and look at Will, shaking your head as you sigh, deeply. “No. It’ll go away.” Your eyes shift back to the red head. “I hope.”
“Why dont you just talk to her?” Will asks, and you frown, finally turning your full attention to him. “She called us stalkers and creeps. I dont think she’d want to be friends with a creepy stalker.” Without realizing, your eyes are on her again, “Besides, she probably doesnt even like girls.”
“You never know until you talk to her.” Will raises an eyebrow, and you squint your eyes. “Since when did you get so good at this kinda stuff?”
“My mom has a boyfriend.” Will shrugs, and you snort, nodding towards the classroom you both shared down the hall. “C’mon.”
.           .               .
Max opens her locker and shoves her first and second period books inside, heaving a deep sigh of exhaustion.
A small clearing of a throat causes her to glance over, finding you, shifting your bookbag on your shoulder, and a nervous smile on your lips. Cute.
“Uh, hey.” You wave, and instantly drop your hand to your side, “I’m Y/N.”
“I know.” She nods, once, shifting onto one foot, “You’re a stalker like your four buddies.”
You laugh, nervously, shaking your hand as you pull at the sleeves of your shirt. “No. No, we weren’t stalking you. I-I mean my brother and my friend, Lucas, were, but I was just curious. You’re new here in Hawkins and I saw that you really like Dig Dug at the arcade.”
“So your brother is Dustin?” Max raises an eyebrow, and you nod, “Great. So you’re related to a stalker.”
“My twin, actually.” You flinch, “That’s not what I came to you about. Halloweens tonight, and since you’re new to town, I was wondering if you wanted to go trick or treating with us.”
“No thanks.” Max slams her locker shut, stepping back, “I dont hang out with stalkers.” You press your lips together when she turns around, walking down the hall to the classroom you also had to walk to.
“Great talk.” You exhale, shakily, glancing around before following her. You drop down into your desk and heave a deep sigh, Will glancing over at you then to Max settled in the back, “So?”
“So what, Will?” You mutter, dropping your notebook on your desk before crossing your arms, leaning into your seat. “Did you talk to her?”
“Did I talk to her?” You repeat, and Dustin looks over his shoulder at your harsh tone, “Yeah I talked to her. She called me a stalker and a creep. Us stalkers and creeps. So she wants nothing to do with me.”
Will frowns and glances at Dustin, before he watches you prop your chin on your hand, and write the notes on the board.
. . .
“You’re late.” Billy is propped up against his car, cigar in hand as he watched Max round to the passenger side,
“I had to pick up make up homework.”
“Jesus, I don’t care.” Billy tosses his cigar down, stomping on it before tossing open his door, “Late again and you’re skating home.”
Max waits until he’s in the car before rolling her eyes, settling in next to him and curling up against the window. Halfway down the road is when Billy decides to speak up again. “God, this place is a shithole.”
“It’s not that bad.” Max protests, quietly, mind taking her back to you. She had seen how quiet you were in class today. She caused that by being cold to you in the hallway.
“You liking it here?” Billy snips, eyes glancing at her then back to stare at the road, “It smells like literal cow shit.”
“No.”
“Then why are you defending it?” Billy narrows his eyes to Max, but misses her rolling her eyes a second time that day. “I’m not.”
“Sure seems like it.”
“It’s just.” Max sucks in a deep breath, trying to make sure she didn’t have an attitude. “We’re stuck here, and.”
“Yeah. Whose fault is that?”
“Yours.” Max mutters, so Billy raised his eyebrows and glanced her. “What was that?”
“Nothing.” Billy raises his hand to his ear, “Whose fault is it Max? Say it.”
“No.”
Billy clenches his jaw, hand jerking to shift the gear of his car, which lurches when it suddenly picks up speed. Max’s eyes snap to the road, where up ahead, four figures pedal on their bikes. You and the party.
“Billy, slow down.” Max demands, Billy chuckling and looking at her. “What? Those your buddies?”
“No! I don’t know them.”
“Well I guess you won’t care if I hit em, huh?” Billy drums his hand on the steering wheel, eyes settled on you reaching over to shove Dustin, “Bonus points if I hit all of them in one? Or maybe just the girl.”
“Stop, that’s not funny.” Max turns in her seat, mind racing. She just met you. Is she really going to lose you before she has a chance to be friends?
You look over your shoulder at the loud roar of Billy’s car, your eyes widening when the car jerks to speed up, your gasp inaudible from how hard you suck in, “Guys. Guys, we gotta move!”
“Billy, stop!” Max orders, hand reaching out to jerk the steering wheel away from the group, to the opposite side of the road.
Your bike wobbles so you fell sideways, jaw hitting the rough road so your head jerked back up, groan loud as Dustin fell into the grass, Mike and Lucas dropping their bikes to scram back into the road, both grabbing your arms but their eyes remain on the car now speeding away.
“What the fuck?!” You jerk your arms away and rub your jaw, hissing before pulling your hand back, staring at the blood on your fingers and palm,
“Was that...?” Dustin points to the car, before looking at you, catching the blood on your face and hand, “Ah, shit.”
. . .
“I swear to God, if I get another 3-Musketeers I’m going to kill myself.”
You snort and toss your hair up into a lose ponytail, taking your candy bag back from Mike as you glance at Lucas, who holds up said candy and grimaces.
“What’s wrong with 3-Musketeers?” Dustin asks, foreign high offense to the dark skinned males statement,
“What’s wrong with 3-Musketeers?” Luke repeats, chucking the candy so Dustin barely caught it, grinning at it before shoving it into his bag, “No one likes 3-Musketeers,”
“Yeah, it’s just nougat.” Will agrees, shrugging at your scrunched nose face,
“Just nougat?” Dustin protests, Will nodding, “Just nougat. It is top three for me.”
“Eh, top five.” You squint, ignoring Dustins glare,
“Top three?” Mike breathes, Dustin repeating in agreement, “Oh, God, give me a break!”
“Seriously, I could eat a whole bowl of nougat, straight up!”
Suddenly, a figure wearing a white mask jumps out in front of you, your brows furrowing when the four boys at your sides all screech, your eyebrow raising as you glance at them, then to the figure, “That’s it?”
“Seriously?” The figure pulls off the mask to reveal Max’s face, her mouth gaped as she stared at you. “Out of all of you I’d expect you to scream.”
“I’m not a pussy.” You snip, Dustin hitting your shoulder with this back of his hand. You roll your shoulder away from him, narrowing your eyes to your twin.
Max nods her head and turns, only getting five steps before she glances over her shoulder, noticing that you nor the four boys had moved to follow her, “You guys coming or what? I heard we should hit up Loch Nora, that’s where the rich people live, right?”
“Seriously?” You mock, Max’s face slightly falling at the irritation in your voice, “I thought you didn’t want to hang out with us because we’re ‘stalkers’?”
“Look, I didn’t mean that,” Max sighs, and you hum, tilting your head,
“Was that before or after you had your brother almost kill us?”
“Wait. What?” Will looks at you, confused, Max shaking her head and narrowing her eyes.
“You think I did that on purpose? He’s an asshole either way, and, he’s not my brother.”
“Whatever.” You look down at your bag, “Let’s just go to Loch Nora.”
. . .
“Another full size. Like, seriously, rich people are such suckers.” Dustin shoves another snickers bar into his bag, handing you a full (favorite/candy) bar so you smiled, elbowing his arm, “Wait.” Dustin looks at Max, “You’re not rich, right?”
“No.” Max laughs, “I live up Old Cherry Road.”
“That’s totally tubular.” Dustin speaks, looking at you to see you shaking your head, nose scrunched up, “What? Did I say it wrong?”
“Just don’t say it at all.” You demand, and Dustin rolls his eyes, glancing over when Lucas chucks another 3-Musketeers at him.
“Hey.” Max speaks up, your eyes shifting to her. “Look. I’m sorry I called you guys stalkers.” She shrugs. “But I mean. You guys were spying on me a lot.”
“Yeah, I’ll admit to that.” You breathe out a laugh, pulling out a sucker to unwrap. “But like I said earlier today, we don’t get a lot of new people here in Fucktown, so we get every chance we can to see a new face. Especially a cute one.”
You stop mid way of putting the sucker in your mouth, eyes widening in realization to what you had said. “Shit. Shit, I’m sorry.”
“For what?” Max shrugs, eyeing you. “I never said I didn’t think you were cute.”
“So you think I’m cute?” You grin, Max rolling her eyes.
“I’m not admitting it.”
“I’ll take it.” You click your tongue, looking over at Mikes shout for you. You see him knelt beside Will, whose hands are over his head in an attempt to curl himself into a ball.
“Will?” You drop your bag to move forward, kneeling down in front of your best friend so you could grab his wrists, noticing how he flinched roughly, “Will, it’s just me.”
“I saw it again.” Will breathes, his eyes snapping up to you. “The thing I saw at the arcade.”
Your brows furrow as you glance over to Mike, who shakes his head, informing you he didn’t know what Will was talking about. “Okay.” You murmur, pulling Wills hands so he began to stand up with you. “Let’s get you home.”
“Wait, you’re just going to stop trick or treating?” Max asks, and you glance at her, eyes slightly narrowed.
“Yes. I am. Dustin, take my bag. Eat my candy and I’ll pop your bike wheels.”
“You wouldn’t dare.” Dustin clutches your bag and his to his chest, gasp loud. He watches as you link your arm through Wills, leading him down the street back towards Mikes house to call not only your mother, but Joyce.
“Are they, like, a thing?” Max asks, crossing her arms as she turns to the three boys left with her.
“Ew, gross.” Dustin scowls, nose scrunched. “They’ve been best friends since like, first grade.”
“Besides.” Lucas shifts his bag to hang over his shoulder. “Y/N likes girls.”
Max nods, slowly, glancing in the direction to where she could see your back, her feet bringing herself to follow after your brother.
After a few hours of frantically drawing and writing up the final setlist, plans, room arrangements and digging through Cal’s office to find the list of reserved tables, Y/N was finally ready to call her job done. And now to jump right back into ghostly matters, which started with finding Julie and Willie and hoping they had some sort of plan figured out.
“Hey hey, look who’s finally back from the other side!” Flynn’s exclamation was met with winces from the boys and a wry smile from Y/N, “It sure was an adventure, Cal really should organise that office. How’s decorating going?” Flynn sighed in response, “It would be a lot better if some people actually helped out instead of talking to thin air.” She sent a mock glare to Julie who sent an eye roll straight back, “Kinda dealing with bigger and more important things right now, but sure I’ll blow up a balloon right after.”
“So, how has the whole possession thing been going? Any solid way to get Cal back?” Y/N asked, anxiety crawling up the sides of her stomach. Willie looked around at the group, all of whom were fidgeting and avoiding his gaze, sighing he turned back to her, “There is a way, but there’s no guarantee it will work.” Y/N nodded, gesturing for him to continue, “You have to establish a connection first then everything after that is up to Cal and his willpower. This situation is a little different to the one these guys got themselves into, and I’ve also never seen this before so this is the best I can come up with.”
She scrunched up her brow, how on earth did you make a connection with a possessed person? And so she asked exactly that, “Do something that means something to both of you; you’re in the music business, are there any songs that you two would sing together? Something like that. Apart from making the connection, there’s not much else you can do. I’m sorry.” Willie responded, Alex rubbed his arm comfortingly, “This isn’t your fault, it’s no one's fault but Calebs.” Y/N nodded in agreement, “Exactly, you’ve been so incredibly helpful, you all have,” She looked around the group, yes that includes Flynn, and smiled, “Thanks a bunch, you guys.” Her smile quickly transformed into a smug grin, “Luckily, I know exactly which song to use.”
---
A few hours passed and Le Paradis du Chanteur was ready to go, all of the evening’s acts were either out front or preparing in the back. She had seen Julie and the guys a few times in her rushed panic to get a song ready and change the setlist last minute, everything was completely ready and fine, of course, but it didn’t stop Y/N from worrying.
All that was left was to let the guests in, find Cal and make sure the first act was ready (not in that order). She huffed as she hunted down the first act, she supposed they weren’t actually that bad – in fact she could tolerate their outfits somewhat and their music was good. The members were a little annoying but good at what they did so who was she to judge.
Their clothing was easy to spot – they do look like a pack of highlighters (as their nickname would suggest) so it took Y/N no longer than 3 minutes to find them and less than 5 to check in and see that they were practically ready to go on the spot.
Now to find Cal, a challenge she was ready to face head-on, probably. It took Y/N quite a bit longer to find him but, after asking around and getting her co-worker to point her in the right direction, she found him sitting in the kitchen, blank as ever. Y/N sighed and pulled him into the main area, hoping he would at least interact with the guests if they spoke to him.
She hoped that this evening wouldn’t turn into a disaster but who knew at this point – she walked to the entrance and put on her best smile, and went to let everyone in.
 ---
 A couple of acts had already gone and she was up next on the newly improved setlist – here goes the performance of a lifetime.
Y/N breathed out, stepping towards the mic, “Hello, everyone! I hope you’re enjoying your evening so far, we have only a few acts left to go! Before we continue, I’d just like to sing a little something in honour of our amazing manager, Cal!” A series of applause and a few whistles followed her words, Y/N relaxed, if anything went wrong at least she could say she tried. “As I’m sure some of our regulars know, Cal has always been one to enjoy a good musical, you’d hope so with this line of work.” Another ripple of laughter and a few cheers, a grin spread across her face. “When I first joined this diner as a performer, I auditioned with the song I’m about to sing for you now, I like to think of it as our song. Not to mention the fact that for at least 2 weeks after I got the job I couldn’t stop singing it, I think every one of the staff here tonight, and those who aren’t, know the song word for word now, sorry about that. So, with no further ado, I give you my audition song.” Taking the mic out of its stand, Y/N stepped back, spotting Cal sitting in the back corner, face empty of anything, as the backing music started up.
 Shake, shake, shake, Senora
Shake your body line
Shake, shake, shake, Senora
Shake it all the time
 Y/N hopped off of the stage and skipped around tables, whenever she passed a staff member she dance with them for a second, before they would both move on, quickly forming a line.
 Work, work, work, Senora
Work your body line
Work, work, work, Senora
Work it all the time
 The line quickly made its way back to the stage, everyone now singing to each other and dancing together. Y/N closed her eyes and quickly prayed that this was working. She skipped around the line, pointing at different staff members to sing the solo lines.
 My girl's name is Senora
I tell you, friends, I adore her
And when she dances, oh brother
She’s a hurricane in all kinds of weather
 She laughed as she went back to her place in the line, smiling at her co-workers beside her.
 Jump in the line, rock your body in time
(Okay, I believe you)
Jump in the line, rock your body in time
(Okay, I believe you)
 The line jumped slightly to the left every time they sang that line and then danced with the people around them, some workers went to tables and started dancing and singing with the talent scouts or any families or regulars that had booked a place that evening.
 Shake, shake, shake, Senora
(Ahh)
Work, work, work, Senora
(Ahh- Woo!)
 Y/N grabbed Sam’s hand and led them to the middle of the floor as she sang, turning to face them, trying to contain her giggles, as they did a mock opera performance.
 Cal, I know you’re listenin'
Doesn’t this just blow your mind?
I was on a mission
This is what I left behind
 She made her way over to Cal, hoping to see something behind his eyes. Y/N pulled him up by his hand and danced him over to the line of performers at the front.
 I'll miss you every day
Seek a little strange and unusual
And you will find
 The line, still acting as her incredibly enthusiastic backing vocals, started spreading out, a few stayed on the stage while others jumped off to dance and sing with the guests. Sam came over to Y/N and Cal and brought into a weird little circle dance as Noelle and Casey cackled from a nearby table.
 Life beyond all comprehension
A mess in multiple dimensions
A little unconventional, I know
 Y/N’s eyes widened in worry as Cal groaned in pain in front of her. She waved Casey over who quickly grabbed him and sat him down on a nearby, empty chair.
 But, Cal, I am home
I'm home
I'm home
 As soon as she had finished singing, Y/N rushed over to Cal. “You okay?” He grunted in return, “Been better, but then again I could probably be a lot worse.” Her breath hitched as he squeezed his eyes tight and groaned again. His breathing quickened slightly before he let out a big breath and a purple light appeared on his neck. Y/N pulled his collar down to get a better look at it but as quickly as it came it faded away again. “You doing good, Callerina?” He rolled his eyes, “I will be when you stop with those nicknames…and when Sam stops dancing like that.”
She laughed, tears pricking at her eyes, as Cal snorted at Sam’s ridiculous dancing, they were completely embarrassing Noelle as they forced her to waltz around the room. “I thought they said they were a professional dancer when I hired them. Oh well.” He turned to face Y/N, the twinkle back in his eyes, “I thought my return would be more dramatic, I’ll be honest. But this is alright too.” Y/N rubbed at her eyes as she scoffed at him, “Of course, only you would say this wasn’t dramatic enough.” Cal shrugged, “Well when you reach old age, like me, you’ll learn that even bending down takes a lot of effort, might as well make it worth the trouble.” Y/N rolled her eyes, “Cal, you’re 31. You’re not that old.” He sniffed in response, “I watched you grow into the ghostbuster that you’ve become, didn’t I? I think that’s old enough.” She scoffed, though a fond smile played on the edges of her lips, “Well, since you ruined our nice moment I might as well get back to orders and making sure all of our acts are okay.” Cal’s eyes widened at that, “I forgot, I’m so sorry you had to do that all alone, I’ll let you steal anything you want from the diner kitchen after this as a sorry and thank you gift.” She grinned, “As if I wasn’t gonna do that already.”
Y/N walked away, giggling to herself as she heard Cal squawk in indignation behind her. This was totally worth it, she had her family back and a new family as well.
 ---
 It was now the end of the night, lots of people were ordering the last things to eat or drink or finishing up what they already had before they left. All performers were out on the floor, taking orders, entertaining young children or talking to talent scouts if they had the time. It was the noisiest it had been all evening, even with all the bands and music, performance and dancing that had occurred.
Julie awkwardly stood on stage, fiddling with the mic stand. “Excuse me? Hi. Um, so I know this is kinda weird and short notice but one of our band members has a message for a special someone so we hope you enjoy.” She steps back from the mic and moves over to the keyboard towards the front corner of the performance area, Reggie practically vibrated behind the mic whilst the other two musketeers glared at him to chill out before he caused the mic to screech.
The audience had quietened down and now sat in expectant silence, Y/N continued serving, though the short notice act did seem to capture most of her attention (albeit confused stares but her attention nonetheless). Reggie took a few deep breaths, readying himself to poof and basically confess his newfound feelings to a living girl who captured his undead heart, wanting what you can’t have really had been taken to that level, huh.
Julie’s fingers danced across the keyboard as Reggie poofed in and strummed along on the acoustic guitar Julie had pried from Luke’s cold, dead hands, he had wanted to keep the song simple, strip it down to its purest form, mirroring his feelings. That and the fact that he had done this last minute and dragged everyone around him into it, so showing off and using flashy techniques was something they just didn’t have the time to add in.
 When we know something is true
Beyond question or doubt
There's no particular point
In pointing it out
 Reggie strums his guitar, looking solely at either the guitar or the mic, trying to gather up his courage. He wrote this song for Y/N, why couldn’t he just look at her?
 Blue is the colour of sky
'Cause mothers all worry
And old people die
A phone rings, a bee stings
It's something you don't need to hear
It's just clear
 He looked back at Julie, finding her smiling at him encouragingly. He smiled back at her in return. He could do this!
 Why go stating the obvious?
It's so painfully obvious
How could you miss
Something that's this plain to see?
When it's glaring and staring
Right at you
So obviously
 He looked up to meet Y/N’s eyes, she had stopped moving around after handing out her last order, instead, she stood staring at him, completely awestruck. He almost chuckled, how could she stare at him like he hung the stars when she was brighter than the sun?
 When you get bored you draw stars
On the cuffs of your jeans
You still fill out the quizzes you find
In those teen magazines
And you dance like nobody's there
Awkward and perfect
You don't even care
Something courageous, amazing, contagious
And kind
All combined
 Y/N huffed out breathy laughs as she stared at him, the stupid, leather-covered, ghost boy. She knew she hadn’t fallen in love – she hadn’t fallen anywhere, she had walked into her feelings, completely aware and content. He made it easy, Y/N hoped she made it easy too.
 Why go stating the obvious?
It's so painfully obvious
How could you miss
Something that's this plain to see?
When it's glaring and staring
Right at you
So obviously
 Sam grabbed her by the hand and pulled her towards the stage until she was right in front of it – right in front of him, “Have fun with your Romeo, don’t forget about us when you’re off on dates.” They cackled as they ran away, narrowly avoiding Y/N’s punches.
 Sometimes the words
We tend to withhold
But they're exactly the words
Someone needs to be told
But oh, thinking they know
We never say "I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you"
 Y/N smiled up at him as he beckoned her onto the stage. She never thought when she took up this part of the job that she’d end up meeting a bunch of ghosts and their human companion + friend, have her manager be possessed and garner feelings for the golden retriever incarnate.
 'Cause why go
Stating the obvious
It's so painfully obvious
How could you miss
Something that's this plain to see?
When it's glaring, and staring right at you
So obviously
 As the song quieted down, Julie shared looks with Alex and Luke pretended like he wasn’t tearing up at the sight of the pair on stage. Sam and Noelle smiled at each other and Casey rolled her eyes, she truly was surrounded by idiots that she had somehow adopted, not that she regretted it necessarily but she would never admit it.
“Hey, Y/N,” Reggie stepped away from the mic, “I’m not in love with you or anything, but I think I could be if you’d be okay with that?” The girl in question chuckled, “I think I could love you too, eventually. But how about we get to know each other for longer than a week first, sound good?”
“Sounds perfect, Diner Gal.”
Novel Recap: Osamu Dazai’s Entrance Exam
Prologue & Chapter 1
Man, it’s been some time since I’ve started this little series. And originally I wanted to do Dark Era first. But since 2020 has been a shit year so far I’m not in the mood to read even more depressing stuff. So, I decided for something a little brighter.
Also: “Recap”, that was the word I was looking for, after I failed to come up with a proper name lol.
As most of you probably already know the first light novel is the original story from season 1, episodes 6 & 7. But it’s without Atsushi, since Atsushi hasn’t been introduced as a main character yet. They also gave some of Dazai’s original lines to Atsushi, which I think is not the best decision, since it alters the characterization. There are also some heavy differences between the novel and its anime counterpart. I personally prefer the novel.
But anyway, let’s get started, we’re inside Kunikida’s mind the whole time. This is going to be fun.
The prologue begins with Kunikida explaining what his ideals are, how he met his ideals, why he married his ideals, and when he plans to have babies with his ideals.
My name is Doppo Kunikida, an idealist who lives in reality, a realist who pursues ideals.
I have this stupid mug I bought back when I started studying. It will now forever remind me of Kunikida:
Tumblr media
And this is a record of the struggles between a man who yearns for the realization of ideals and a new hire destined to interfere with them.
The following interference of ideals took place between 5 pm and 6 pm [ding ding]
Also here are some interesting excerpts from his ideals...notebook...diary... ideals-diary. I’m gonna call it that now:
Takekoshi came to my house. We took a stroll under the moonlight together.
Ha, gAAAAAAAAYYYY.
I ate a pear. It wasn’t sweet.
Then why did you eat it in the first place????
The story continues to turn into a beginning of a Brooklyn 99 episode, but it’s with Dazai and Kunikida chasing some random thief. Come to think about it, isn’t the ADA supposed to take only cases the police can’t deal with? Guess the police in the BSD universe is even more incompetent than I thought.
“Don’t worry about it. It’s all according to plan. More importantly, guess what I just saw.”
“I don’t care!”
“It’s this incredibly rare book called ‘The Complete Suicide’. I’ve been searching all over for it, and I just noticed it on display in the used bookstore back there-- Ah! I have to go back and buy it before someone else does.”
And that’s how Dazai met the love of his life. Can we also talk about that the title “The Complete Suicide” sounds rather strange? Especially when I translate it into German: “Der Komplette Selbstmord”. Oh god, fuck off, book!
But no matter how twisted my partner’s interests are, no matter how much he tries to sabotage the mission, I will not allow the criminal to escape for failure is not written in my schedule.
“For failure is not written in my schedule.” -> That is an awesome and inspiring quote. I want it on a t-shirt. Or on another mug.
After a chase through a crowd of people they’re able to catch the thief, thanks to Kunikida’s ability and Dazai’s... uh... plan.
One resident speaks up. “J-just who are you people?”
I whip out my detective license and hold it up in the air so everyone can see.
“There is no need for concern. We’re with the Armed Detective Agency.”
[Brooklyn 99 intro starts playing]
.
And that’s it for the prologue! On to chapter 1:
8th
It rained this morning. A quiet shower, but frigid like the depth of winter. I yearn to live for my ideals. I strive for my ideals. I move forward without fear, without fatigue, without hesitation. Neither dreams nor honor will be pursued--for how euphoric it an be to solely devote oneself to quotidian tasks.
Why does this sound like the lyrics to an Evanescence song? *sad Amy Lee voice* Frigiiiii~d like the depth of wiiiiiii~nteeeee~r
Also... Kunikida, you must be a blast to have on a date. No wonder the women swoon over you.
But despite its [the building of the ADA] appearance, it’s so sturdily built that even machine-gun artillery fire from the outside wouldn’t cause any damage to the interior. That may sound oddly specific, but it’s happened to us.
*nods heavily* Sounds like completely normal work hazards to me, don’t know what you’re talking about.
Kunikida tells us that he checks his schedule many times. Like... really many times. Probably also while using the bathroom. I don’t know if this is a normal behaviour, but okay. So he goes to work and finds Dazai being high thanks to shrooms, dancing around in the office, to everyone’s demise.
“Whoa there’s a giant sea anemone outside the window, Kunikida! A banana... It’s eating a banana! And it’s even removing the white stringy bits!”
Yes, this man is a terrifying genius and an ex-Port Mafia executive.
Man, I should try these mushrooms one day, too. Dazai’s visions really sound entertaining.
I pour coffee into my mug as I always do.
I really hope we share the same mug, Kunikida! Don’t disappoint me!
But now, I don’t want to hide my all time fav quote from Dazai from you:
“Oh, I’ve got it. I need to take off my clothes. I need to get naked to get higher ratings! It’s simple, really! Let us undress! After that, we can all put on full-body thighs, go to the bank, and dance the hopak!”
Yes, this man is a terrifying genius and an ex-Port Mafia executive.
I land a roundhouse kick to the back of Dazai’s head, knocking him against the wall and rendering him unconscious.
Everyone in the ADA after that:
Tumblr media
.
We’re told how Kunikida and Dazai met and the day he was introduced as a new employee into the ADA
In that moment, I suddenly sense a cold, piercing light in his eyes, as if he were calmly evaluating his senior--no, as if he were staring into my very soul through the eyes of a heavenly, enlightened sage. [...] Was I seeing things? Could my mind have been playing tricks on me?
Dazai uses Leer. It’s very effective.
If you only know the anime version, than you completely missed the fact that Fukuzawa and Kunikida had a conversation about Dazai. They both realize that there must be something wrong about his alleged background, because it doesn’t quite add up. And then there is also the fact that his ability is extremely dangerous.
“I would like you to bring Dazai with you while you work and see if he can be trusted. If you ever feel he could be an emissary, intelligence operative, or spy of some sort, then you are to fire him without hesitation. However, if you sense any sign of wickedness in his heart...”
The president takes a black automatic pistol out from a bag behind him, then presents it to me.
You do not fuck with shachou and his family.
.
The next day they meet with a teenage hacker boy called Rokuzu, because the ADA received an anonymous email requesting them to investigate a haunted building. And since neither the Ghostbusters nor the Winchester brothers reside in Yokohoma that task also falls into the ADA’s hands.
“Anyway, it’s not like you to be late. What, were you on a ‘date’ or something?”
He makes a circle with one hand and shoves a finger in it with the other.
Typical teenage boy behaviour.
“Sorry to disappoint, but I only plan on going on dates with the woman I marry. And according to the ‘Future Plans’ page in my notebook [...] it’s going to be another six years before I get married.”
“Hold up. You already got a girl you’re gonna marry?”
“Not for another four years.”
Thank god, we live in times with apps like tinder and stuff, so we can all schedule our marriage and dating plans.
The next things happen pretty much the same as in the anime. They ask the teenage hacker boy to look up the sender of the mail, they meet with the taxi driver who tells them about the abduction of several people, Dazai tries to Tokyo Drift but fails miserably (which wasn’t shown in the anime) and then they investigate the haunted building, which turns out to be an abandoned hospital. They do this in the middle of the night, of course.
Oh, and Kunikida is absolutely terrified of ghosts. *deep voice* You’re in Silent Hill, son.
They hear a scream for help and run to the rescue, just in time to find a woman named Sasaki almost drowning in a tank. Thankfully she gets rescued by these two gentlemen, otherwise it may have been the end for her.
Aside from Dazai’s overcoat, she’s nearly naked and soaking wet in the middle of the night.
Damn, that poor woman. She must be freezing.
Her hands tightly wrapped around her elbows and her legs stretched out on the floor are especially delicate.
Uuuhhh.... Kunikida? Dunno if this is the right moment to-
The clothes clinging to her body sketch the outline of an alluring figure.
This man needs a hug.
I feel almost as if I could see through her remarkably fine porcelain skin.
Maybe a little bit more than just a hug.
Wet hair clings to her nape as water drips onto her chest.
Kunikida STAHP!
I avert my gaze for absolutely no reason.
“absolutely no reason” -> PFFFFFFFF. Sasaki tells them that there are other people trapped here and wants to lead Dazai and Kunikida to them.
“... Wait.” I place a hand on Miss Sasaki’’s shoulder, stopping her. “Dazai, what do you think?”
“The way she’s dressed makes me feel things,” he says with a straight face.
“Be serious.!”
“with a straight face” -> so no feeling things at all? Dazai stop playing straight already. Even Kunikida doesn’t buy it anymore.
Anyways Dazai thinks Sasaki’s story is a little bit too convenient. They’re searching for the other victims trapped here, but when they find them it’s already too late, since a poison gas trap somehow activates and they have to retreat.
Case #0130403
Statement of Jason Gale, regarding the strange occurrences surrounding Daniel Fenton. Original statement given 3rd April, 2013. Audio recording by Jonathan Sims, Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute, London. Statement begins.
--
I wanna start this by saying that I barely knew Danny. I don’t know how he became what he is, but what I did see, well...I still have nightmares. I guess I should start at the beginning, though I’m not really sure how much of a beginning there is.
I never had the greatest home life. Pretty textbook, really. Shitty dad, dead mom, bad friends, the works. I ran away when I was fourteen, fell in with a real bad crowd. I’d been in and out of juvie every few months, but I didn’t meet Danny until I was sixteen. I’d been picked up at the scene of a robbery, don’t even remember where, and sent off to Amity Youth Detention Center. I’d been there for about three months when my old cellmate got released, so I was on my own for a bit. I didn’t mind, D Block wasn’t exactly the worst it could get.
Danny transferred in a few weeks later. At first, I didn’t think much of him. He was tiny, barely 5’4 I think, and he looked like a twig. His eyes, though.....his eyes were what scared me the most. They looked dead, like someone sucked all the life outta him, just leaving his corpse walkin’ around like some kinda zombie. They sent him in and he just.....stared, watching Officer McCarthy leave like he was already planning the poor bastard’s funeral. I freaked out a little. I’m not ashamed, kid was fuckin’ scary.
That’s when it happened. It’s like something snapped in him. The room got all cold, and the lights started flickering. He shoved me up against the wall and I dunno how but it felt like this.....predator staring at me. I don’t even remember what he said, but I just agreed to whatever it was so he’d stop staring at me. I swear his eyes were green, but it had to just be a trick of the light. It had to be, because I remember they were blue. I remember, because I remember thinking how weird it was for an Asian kid to have blue eyes.
Still, when he got mad......I swear to you, they were green.
Sorry, I got a little.....off track there. There were a few more weird things about him, but just little things. He never ate, and I know it wasn’t that he was eating when I couldn’t see him. AYDC has scheduled meal times for every block, and every single time it was D’s turn he just....stayed in bed. There’s no getting in or out once the door’s locked, so he wasn’t sneaking around. And yet, even after about a week and a half of this, he was fine. No complaining, no hunger pains, not even a little bit of nausea. Like.....like he didn’t need food. I asked him about it, but the answer, well.....I think he was a bit nutty. Everyone was in there.
I managed to get him into the cafeteria one time, though not for very long. I think Emily, that is, Emily Grey, scared him off, but I can’t be sure. I do remember though, that the others felt it too. Danny was.....he had this like, aura of despair. Like you get near him, and nothing you do will make you feel again. Owen Coulter said he “felt like depression, if depression was a person”. I only remember that because it was so strange to hear a twelve year old say that with the knowledge that only an old man has, but there it was anyway.
He got transferred a few days later, or....I assume he was transferred, anyway. I heard he’d finally gotten his trial, but he didn’t come back after. I can only assume they sent him to F, because I didn’t see him for several months after that. I’d honestly just been starting to feel okay again when he came back to D. I only really noticed him because we were in the yard at the same time, and something in me wanted to turn around and bolt the second I spotted him. Still, he seemed.....different. Less angry, less......snappish. I noticed a few new scars on him too, which was strange just because the inmates at AYDC aren’t allowed any electronics, so how the hell did he get electrocution scars?
The next big one happened after he was released. He’d been out for about a week when I got a visitor. This was news to me, since my old man doesn’t give a rat’s ass about me and my friends wouldn’t be caught dead in a juvie visitation room. Only visitors I really got were my lawyer and sometimes my stepmom, but she didn’t come often. She doesn’t like me much, but that’s beside the point. When I saw Danny on the other side of that glass window, I about turned around right there. Unfortunately for me, the door was already shut and I couldn’t get anyone to open it, not from my side. Fuckin’ bastards probably stepped out for a donut break, who knows. The point is, Danny was....different.
His scars curled up both of his cheeks now, pale and prominent against his sickly brown skin. His eyes seemed a little sharper now, a little more aware. I wasn’t entirely sure this was a good thing. We argued a bit, but....I think he was genuinely trying to help. I didn’t trust him a damn bit, but at least he was trying.
I’ve been dancing around the point long enough, I think. Sure, the kid’s weird, you’re thinking. He’s got scars, so what? He makes you miserable just being around him? Probably some emo bastard. The whole predator gaze? Well, he was in for assault. No, the thing I’ve been avoiding, the thing that I’ll never forget....it was his ghost.
Way back when we were still bunkmates, he’d told me about how he died. How his parents were some kind of Ghostbuster freaks, and they built a portal to Hell in his basement. Okay, well, he called it the “Ghost Zone”, but who gives a fuck, honestly. Then he told me he was stupid enough to go in the damn thing, and got zapped six ways to Sunday. He said he’d died in that portal, and I didn’t want to believe him. I couldn’t. When you die, you die. That’s it. Game over. Do not pass Go, do not collect two hundred dollars. The idea that he could be some sort of.....half-alive, half-dead.....thing, well....I didn’t want to think about it. I’d already come to terms with my own mortality, and I did not need it shoved back in my face by some freaky-ass kid.
But then he showed me. God, it was horrible. I was expecting him to fail, just the delusions of his poor fucked up scrambled brains, some side effect of getting zapped to hell and back. Maybe, if it were true, to just go a bit translucent. I didn’t expect the monster.
It came in a flash of light. Two sparking rings of bright white electricity, so bright they burned to look at. When I managed to blink the spots outta my eyes, I almost thought I’d hit my head. Where Danny had been standing, a floating, glowing thing stood in his place. It was pale, washed out, with only its acid green eyes and tongue giving it any color at all. It wore a jumpsuit of some sort, with thick gloves and attached boots, like the biohazard guys on TV. It still had the scars though, even if they were glowing an ominous neon green. It hissed at me, like it was trying to speak, but I didn’t understand a word it said. When it turned that empty, hungry gaze on me, I panicked. I shoved it back against the wall, where it connected with a sickening splat. Blood oozed on the concrete, or at least, I assume it was blood. It was red and green and sizzled, like it was eating away at the stone. I think there’s still marks there, where the acid ate away at the concrete.
The thing wanted to eat me, I’m sure of it, but it seemed too dizzy. I think shoving it only made it more angry, but at that point the light came back. I looked away just in time, and when the light died down Danny was back. Still scrawny, still fleshy, still alive. Only now, I wasn’t so sure.
I haven’t seen another ghost since, and I think it’s for the best. I’ve done my research, I’ve heard about these....mediums. I know I can’t see them, not on this plane. Honestly, I’m better off for it I think. I don’t want to see them, or hear them, or even think about them again.
I didn’t give you this statement to have you do something about it. I don’t even know if you have the ability to do anything, since all this happened in Illinois. I didn’t come all the way to some dingy spooky library in fucking London for a solution. I’ve made my peace. I just.....I needed to tell somebody. Not the cops, I don’t trust them as far as I could throw them. And not anyone else either, they’d think I’m a schizo freak, like that Weston kid. No, I’m perfectly happy laying low, and never thinking about Daniel Fenton again. And now that I have this off my chest and stored away in your freaky little library, I finally can.
--
Statement ends. Although he said he didn’t want us to do anything about his experience, we did reach out to Mr. Gale. He replied in no uncertain terms for us to leave him alone, and that he absolutely would not be giving a follow-up statement. I....can’t say I blame him, but really, half-dead? A teenager that could turn into some paranormal entity? It all seems rather....far fetched.
Still, we did do some basic follow-up research on what we could. The Fentons do exist, as well as the town of Amity Park. I’d like to take everything about said town with a hefty dose of salt however, as it claims to be “The Most Haunted Place in America”. Tourist trap nonsense, if you ask me. Daniel Fenton was arrested in late summer of 2010, though those records are obviously sealed. Emily Grey declined to give a follow-up statement as well, and Owen Coulter seems to have unfortunately passed away in the intervening years.
Still, I can’t help but think that Mr. Gale’s statement is....unusually detailed, especially as it concerns a boy he himself claims to have no close connection to.
End recording.
Reaction to ‘Wizards’
There were some elements of Wizards that I was quite pleased with and others I found disappointing.
Here are some notes I took while watching it:
“I was busy,” says the guy who was ASLEEP.
Cuckoo clock in bookstore looks like Bular’s head.
Green Knight can teleport, confirming potential parallel character to Angor Rot and Tronos Madu, both yellow-eyed assassins with teleportation and tragic backstories (later confirmed, yes, there are parallels between this character and those two besides the visual one)
Jim always tips at the cafe; yup, that sounds like Jim
Gunmar saving Jim: irony. Is Jim going to go to the Gumm-Gumm camp now?
Confirmation that portrait was Arthur and Guinevere and she is “gone”, presumably by magic or killed by a troll - is she dead or did she just leave? (Later confirmed, dead)
Morgana’s name is carved on the tree under Arthur’s and Guinevere’s - was she in love with Guinevere too?
Is that Nari with Morgana and Guinevere? (Later confirmed, yes)
Stone doll Callista finds looks like Angor’s totems - same village? He said it was “Gunmar’s war” that destroyed it, and she says it was a human attack, but Angor might’ve seen it as a retaliatory attack by the humans which Gunmar’s actions had provoked?
Arthur being the one to cut off Morgana’s hand makes Merlin SLIGHTLY less of an asshole for using it in the Amulet, but a lot of this still could’ve been avoided if Merlin had been willing to shut up and listen.
Oh, except it wasn’t Arthur who cut off Morgana’s hand the first time anyway?
Episode 3 ends without Steve getting knocked on his back, so that scene must’ve been his sparring match with Lancelot in Episode 2 instead of keeping it an Episode 3 tradition (like how Zuko and Iroh hug in Episode 18 of each season of Avatar the Last Airbender)
Why would Douxie be grossed out at the idea of swimming naked? Swimsuits have only been around for, what, 80 years? Presumably it was a specific lack of desire to see Steve naked.
Neat take on the Lady of the Lake.
AAARRRGGHH used to have a triple set of horns - what happened to the other two? Receded, amputated, knocked off? Also, Gunmar says AAARRRGGHH is ‘holding back’ when they spar and has yet to win against him - if AAARRRGGHH was doing that on purpose, this supports my theory that he was debating how safe it was to stay on Gunmar’s side for some time before deserting.
Morgana possessed?
Angor Rot saved Morgana/recovers her body and gives a funerary-sounding blessing, showing he was sympathetic to humans before losing his soul
Oh, and Nari gave her the new hand
Wait, so who steals Angor’s soul in this timeline?
Called it on that servant guy being a Changeling - he appears in the background of, like, every scene that episode where they’re talking about Morgana using unexpected strategies to sneak into Camelot.
Wait, except his human form is an adult - so is he a polymorph? Or Familiars can be taken as adults but babies are easier to contain and have less ‘established personality’ to match after replacing them? Or has Morgana already been creating Changelings? AAARRRGGHH calls Jim “impure” when they meet in Dwoza, suggesting Gumm-Gumms already know what Changelings are, except Morgana wasn’t working with them yet
Is Callista going to be Deya? (Later confirmed, yes)
Show seems to be matching up with old theories about Deya being the first Trollhunter, confirming that the show, comics, and novels are all separate continuities (since comics and novels show pre-Deya Trollhunters).
Gumm-Gumm berserkers - mind-controlled or grit-shaka’d (talisman of “no fear”), to throw themselves into sunlight like that?
Steve seems ready to refer to any half-decent older man as his dad, like when he refers to Merlin as ‘Wizard-Dad’. Maybe it’s because I was watching Brooklyn 99 recently but I’m reminded of Jake Peralta.
Big Jim’s crystal neck protrusions look like Strickler’s knife collar back when I thought that was part of his body. Glowy lines look like Gunmar; tie-in to Gunmar born of a “corrupted Heartstone” since Jim is “corrupted” now?
Aw, Krel called Ricky his dad.
How did AAARRRGGHH fit through the HexTech door to the backroom?
“Cat and mouse” line cuts to a shot of Archie obviously imitating Nari (confirmed a few minutes later)
Toby has obviously seen Ghostbusters. “When someone asks you if you are a god, you say YES!”
Decoration in bookshop looks like Angor’s head.
Was that lightshow of Nari searching the world for Jim’s soul just a visual metaphor for her powers or did literally everyone on Earth see that?
“There’s a force neither of us can escape - gravity!” says the woman who can fly.
Morgana’s occasional echo-y voice in Trollhunters matches Bellroc and Skael - possession/magical-influence related?
So did Merlin have that book on him or did his body turn into the book?
Are all dragons fluffy and/or shapeshifters in this universe?
Might’ve been smarter to keep Merlin’s staff intact and destroy the Grimoire so the Arcane Order never knows where to find the Genesis Seals, just saying.
If Morgana didn’t become “the Eldritch Queen” until, like, IMMEDIATELY before Angor approached her (therefore days earlier at most in the unaltered timeline), how had he heard of her to seek her aid? Was he actually reaching out to the Arcane Order? At least this explains why he didn’t go to the Trollhunter for help - there was no Trollhunter to approach yet.
Big Jim ‘dies’ in the same pose as AAARRRGGHH in Trollhunters Season 1 and Draal in Unbecoming, both false death scenes, for five-second foreshadowing Jim was alive.
Mixed feelings about him being human again - like I’ve said, I didn’t think the Troll Jim subplot was well-executed but I also felt like, now that it’s been established, the show needs to stick with it. Since everything’s over I’m going to headcanon Jim having shapeshifting powers now and being able to switch between human and troll at will, he just didn’t think to try to do so on-camera.
Also, I feel like Jim’s relationship with Claire is once again completely overshadowing his relationship with Toby, instead of them being different kinds of relationships with equal weight.
Barbara is going to be pretty shocked when her human son shows up again. She and Strickler don’t appear at all in this series, even in cameo.
Maybe Jim’s not a troll anymore because, with Merlin and Morgana both dead, their magic is “broken” and that’s what was holding his transformation in place? Merlin’s through the potion, Morgana’s through the Changeling femur, both through the Amulet.
Is Jim still going back to New Jersey? Blinky’s got to, unless the trolls there have elected a new leader or they’re bringing the New Jersey Heartstone back to Arcadia.
Series ending scene also would work as the final scene of a movie, setting up a sequel hook even though it’s supposed to be over now.
Seems like wizards are long-lived and age really slowly? Possibly a “will not die but can be killed” situation, like vampires, or unicorns (at least in The Last Unicorn)
Additional thoughts after finishing the show and thinking for a while:
I don’t get how Morgana could end up with such a reputation among trolls - enough to have superstitions about her, seen when Dictatious objects to Usurna saying her name - when they only interacted with her for like a few days at most. I guess she made a pretty strong impression on Gunmar, who passed that on to everyone else? Or maybe she cultivated that reputation over time via the Changelings?
Speaking of the Changelings, does this mean that, while Morgana designed the process to create them, she doesn’t make each individual one? Otherwise she would’ve had to pre-make a bunch in the time between getting her new hand and being trapped in the Heartstone. Although, if she can steal Angor’s soul remotely (with the idea she was already trapped in the Heartstone when that happened), she can probably also make Changelings remotely.
I’m kind of sorry the Changelings got invented so quickly; I figured there would be some trial-and-error to that process.
How I think the Original Timeline went:
Morgana would’ve turned to the Arcane Order seeking magic allies, later in the day that gets changed when the time-travelers arrive. Possibly she seeks out Nari, specifically, remembering her from childhood.
Merlin then sees Morgana as the Future Threat and he or one of the knights (not Arthur) cut off her hand in the resulting fight.
Merlin makes the Amulet. It chooses Callista, who is still in Camelot’s dungeon at the time, and she agrees to fight Gunmar in exchange for her freedom.
She fully intending to go back on the deal and run for it, but then something-something-something and she learns her original name and saves the world anyway. Probably she’s the one who took down and imprisoned AAARRRGGHH in Dwoza, which inspired the other trolls there to follow her.
Morgana finds out about the Trollhunter shortly before Angor arrives to ask her for magic, which is why she orders him to hunt the Trollhunters down.
Arthur thinks Merlin killed Morgana and wants to avenge her, leading him to the Arcane Order for the original not-time-loop-prompted attack.
Show did a good job establishing and developing Douxie’s relationship with Merlin
Also, how did that bookshop end up a center of Merlin’s power? He’s only been in the modern world for a few months. Did he set a shop up off-camera while the trolls were travelling to New Jersey and the Akiridions were discovering Earth?
How did Ricky Blank lose his head, anyway? Can Hex Tech fix him? Krel says magic and Akiridion tech combine harmoniously.
In the Warmth of Your Smile
Pairing: Byeler/Byler
Words: 2441
Summary: Will’s had a pretty bad night. Scratch that, pretty bad year. Mike can’t rewind time, but he can be here.
Warning: None, they’re kids and they have their first kiss though? (Well, Mike’s second, sorry.)
Author’s Note: Thanks for reading this! I just have a lot of thoughts about that Halloween night. Can you believe I didn’t mention “Crazy together” once? I hope the feeling is invoked, though. You can also find this and all my other Byeler fics on my AO3 here!
They’re sitting shoulder to shoulder with legs pressed in close in Mike’s basement. It must be getting pretty late now. The fear’s still sitting in Will’s stomach like a lump, but it’s settled now thanks to Mike and his comforting words. His reassurances are still floating about in Will’s head when Mike says something and he has to turn to him to try to catch it.
“Huh?”
Mike scoffs lightly at his friend. “I said you really should have told me about that girl-”
“Max.”
“Yeah, whatever. you should have told me she was coming with us tonight, that you were inviting her.”
“You’re still upset over that? Come on, Mike.”
“What? Because of her-” he cuts himself off and lowers his voice again. “If I wasn’t so focused on all that, I would’ve been with you the whole time.” his chin is jutting out and Will’s worried he might cry, but instead he just curls his fists up, pulling on the pants of his Ghostbusters suit.
“Hey, it’s nobody’s fault. And don’t blame Max. ‘Sides you never asked about your friend, El being in the party. Just decided." he says it matter of factually as he swipes a bite-size snickers from the table and unwraps it. He tries to avoid conversations about her usually, especially if Mike’s the one talking about her, but he can’t help the comment that rolls off his tongue.
“What?” Mike has all of a second to feel offended before he looks at Will’s face. That’s right, now isn’t about him and besides, Will’s right anyway. He always seems to be right. He wishes he knew what Will was thinking though.
“Nothing. I just d- Look, it doesn’t matter anyway, okay?” Will sticks the whole snickers in his mouth and bites down. Hard. It gives him something else to focus on, other than the thoughts running through his mind.
“Sheesh, you won’t even have a conversation with me? Fine! I don’t get what the problem is anyway? It’s not like she’s done anything to you! She even helped save you!” During Mikes little tirade, Will finishes his mini up, but was now looking to the ground, visibly shaking.
He turns towards his friend within the second Mike was done talking and lets loose on him. “Jeez, I just don’t like her, okay?! Not everybody has to like everybody and I don’t! You don’t like Max? Well I don’t like this El you-you keep talking about! God, you can’t just shut up about her! I- I mean I get it, you care but guess what? I’m right here, Mike!” There are tears in Will’s sullen eyes now, but he keeps going, voice softer this time. “I came back. She left. You’re always here for me, but it’s like you’re not at the same time and I hate it.” The words are practically growled as they make their way out of Will’s angry throat.
Mike looks at Will, his best friend since they were five, as if he’s been stricken. It hurts, to hear all the thoughts and feelings that have been built up inside his small friend this whole time he’s been back home. He thought it’d been him and Will against the rest of the world, but it turns out he’d been part of what was hurting him most.
He blinks and feels something running down his cheeks. Huh? How long has he been crying? “I-I’m sorry. Will, I-” He looks down at his lap, then back up at the boy in front of him. Tears escape his eyes too and Mike wants to hold his hand or hug him, to comfort and be comforted, but he’s afraid he’s lost those privileges now, so he settles for just looking at his sad face, sure that he’s never felt so crushed in his life, excluding the time he saw “Will’s” body being pulled from the quarry.
“Will, I didn’t know you felt like that. I thought we told each other everything.” Will’s sharp look makes Mike flinch and inhale a breath.
“Yeah, so did I. But I guess not anymore.” When Mike looks at him questioningly, Will sighs. “You and El sure got pretty close while I was- gone.”
Mike is stunned for a second. He racks his brain and then it clicks. No, no way. “Will, it’s not like that! I- We weren't -!” He clumsily scrambles closer to Will on the couch and clutches both of his hands in his own. “I promise it wasn’t like that. Not for me, definitely! You know I-” The words don’t quite make it out of his lips, but the answering blush to both of their faces is enough tell them both the truth.
“But, then why did you act so uh, you know?” Will looks to the side.
Mike bumps his shoulder, still holding his hands and makes sure to look into his eyes as he says the next words.
“I lost a friend. I guess I started to care about her.” At Will’s hurt expression, Mike quickly corrects his phrasing. “As a friend though, a friend only! Besides, she doesn’t even know basic stuff. I think it would be, like, taking advantage of her.” Mike makes a face. He remembers Nancy overhearing Nancy talk on the phone to Barb about that. His dad was never gonna tell him, so he’s lucky to have learned it somewhere when he did. He still feels guilty for that kiss, knowing what he knows.
“Mike?” Said boy looks at Will and his heart almost stops. There are dried tears on his face and a question in his eyes still.
“I wouldn’t want to be anywhere but here, anyway.” He says softly, pulling Will closer and wrapping his arms around him tentatively. Will seems to accept this, so Mike leans his head on Will’s shoulder and then, with the silence of the house around them, he just breathes him in.
Will sits there, still and breathing shallowly. He’s too nervous to do anything, not wanting to make a mistake and have Mike move away.
It’s maybe thirty seconds before Mike chuckles and burrows closer to Will, gently stroking his back with a single finger. “I’m not made of glass, you know?”
Will seems to calm when he hears that and relaxes instantly. “S-sorry. Nervous.”
“Me too.” If Will could see the expression on Mike’s face as he say those words, he’d see the hopelessly lovesick look he wears.
Will, wearing his own lovelorn look, places his head atop of Mikes and his arms come around Mike in a hug-like fashion, then stay there.
It’s quiet inside Mike’s home. The only sound the boys can hear are their breathing and the muffled television upstairs. Will can feel Mike’s heartbeat against his side and he wonders if Mike can feel his. It’s a nice thought and it makes his heart feel all fluttery inside. There’s so much he’s yet to tell Mike, that he must know now but Will wants him to hear it too. He wants to-
“Can I kiss you?”
“I- Wha-?” Mike’s head shoots up and he stares wide and owlishly at Will.
“Um, a kiss?” Will’s losing his nerve, but he looks into Mike’s eyes and Mike doesn’t look disgusted. He looks amazed, like he’s surprised that Will would actually want to kiss him of all people.
“Y-yeah!” Mike catches himself and then says, calmer, “I mean, sure, okay.” But his eyes are still eager and Will can’t help but grin, even as his cheeks turn a dewy pink. It’s okay, Mike’s are the same color.
“I’ve never done this before.” Will confesses. It’s kind of daunting.
“I’ve never done this with someone that matters.” Mike whispers back as his face comes closer to Will’s own.
It makes Will’s heart hammer even faster. He feels almost like a grown adult and at the same time like he’s five years old again, meeting his best friend for the first time on those swings. His eyes are cracked open just the slightest bit ‘cause he figures you gotta be able to see which direction you’re going in, right? He thinks Mike probably looks beautiful this close up because he looks beautiful all the time, but he can’t see to well with his eyes squinted half open and half shut so he’ll half to check another time. Another time, wow.
His internal monologue seems to die as Mike’s lips graze his own, his eyes slipping shut fully and of their own accord. After five seconds it’s over but then Mike’s coming back in again. And again. And again. He doesn’t really know what he’s doing and Mike doesn’t seem to either, so he just tries to emulate what he’s seen in movies and from TV. It seems to be working, Mike and him pressing their lips together and rubbing them around slightly. It feels nice, at least. He’s grabbed onto the back of Mike’s suit sometime during their kissing and Mike’s bunched up the front of his in his hands.
They’re still softly kissing when the door to the basement opens and the clicking of heels starts down the steps.
“Shit.” Mike curses. They jump away from each other as quickly as they can, almost as if just burned.
“Boys!” Mrs. Wheeler rounds the corner and peeks her head down. She looks at them suspiciously for a few seconds then shakes her head fondly. “Boys, sort out your candy now! Will, your brother’s here to pick you up, sweetie.” She smiles, turning and heading back up the stairs.
“Yes ma’am!”
“Okay, mom!”
Mike looked put out as Will and he starts sorting through the candy and chocolate.
“Eugh, raisins.” Mike’s face scrunches up and he’s about to throw them in the trash can, but Will stops him.
“Wait, I’ll take them.”
“But you don’t like raisins either.”
“No, mom does.”
Mike’s eyebrows go up at that. “Dude, I’m seriously questioning your mom right now.”
Will just shrugs and smiles. “She eats them on her oatmeal.”
“Wow.”
When nothing else is said Will looked at Mike questioningly, still going through the candy pile. “Huh? What’s wrong?”
“It’s true.”
More silence.
“Mike, come on. What’s true?”
“You really are too good! How is this possible? That I could meet someone like you and you would think I’m worth anything is beyond me.” Mike’s tone is joking, but Will leans over and pecks his cheek anyway.
“Don’t you know how important you are, Mike? To the party? To me?” He leans in and just when Mike thinks for sure, they’re going to kiss again he smiles and pushes him back.
“Here.” In Will’s hand is a Baby Ruth. Mike looked at him questioningly.
“I dont-?” He wasn’t sure what was up.
“Kiss.” Oh. Oh, okay. Well, if it was an exchange Will wanted than he’d be happy to oblige.
“O-okay, yeah!” Wow, calm down, Mike.
Will just laughs slightly in return. Then, they’re coming closer and closer, but the sudden sound of footsteps on the wooden steps stop them in their tracks. They didn’t even hear the door open this time. Was it never shut? They can’t remember. Mike and Will back up until they’re at a safe distance from each other, then Will picks up his candy-filled bag.
Perfect timing, as Jonathan rounds the corner just then. His eyes are tired but his lips curve into a smile when he sees Will. He waves and nods his head at Mike too.
“Hey guys, you hit a lot of houses?”
They look at each other and remember the events that had taken place earlier. “Uh, it was pretty good. We decided to come back early though and just watch some Halloween movies.” Mike covers for Will.
“Oh, yeah? Not too scary?” Jonathan’s concern is palpable an honestly, Mike gets it.
“Uh, n-no. Funny ones mostly.” He’s blanking, shit, he’s blanking.
“Um, E.T and So-something Wicked This Way Comes?”
“Right. You guys okay? You’re kinda jumpy.”
Oh no. It’s all over. He knows and he’s gonna tell they’re mom, then Mrs. Wheeler’s gonna find out, oh God, Ted-
“Did you guys actually watch a scary movie? ‘Cause I won’t be mad. Will, I know you love them, an-”
Will sighs and looks over at Mike, who gives him a smile and a quick wink.
“Okay, yeah. We watched Cujo. It was really scary and ya know, we’ll probably both have nightmares now.” He looks back to Mike, who nods along.
“Okaaayy.” Jonathan draws the word out, still not sounding convinced, but whatever secrets they’re holding, it doesn’t seem they’re ready to give it up quite yet.
Will turns back to Mike and walks over to him. “Here.” He looks down and in Will’s hand is the Baby Ruth from earlier.
“But-” He looks at Jonathan standing on the foot of the steps and then back at Will. “Our deal.” He maybe puts too much emphasis on the words, but that’s neither here nor there.
Will grins. “It’s okay. You’ll make it up to me, won’t you Wheeler?”
It nearly short circuits Mike’s brain, but he manages to hug back when Will goes in for a hug.
“I’ll call you later on the walkie.” He promises.
“‘Kay.” Then Will’s out of Mike’s arm’s and moving up the stairs, shouting a ‘see ya’ behind him.
“Bye!” Mike yells back, then he plants himself on the couch with a doofy grin on his face.
~
"Hey, buddy?" Jonathan looks puzzled as he and Will make their way out to the car, having already said by to Mike's mom.
"Yeah?"
"You guys drink some Kool-aid or something? Have some kind of red candy?"
Jonathan can swear he sees Will's soul leave his body the moment he say it, the sheer terror on his face is enough to read and he feels like a fool. It doesn't take a genius to round up all the clues and know what they mean.
"Yeah! We had.. Skittles! It was skittles!" Will hurries through an answer and though it's hardly believable, Jonathan lets it go.
"Well, congrats." He ruffles Will's hair and the boy looks unsure.
"For what? Eating skittles?" He's incredulous.
"Uh, yeah. I haven't had any, but I hear they're pretty good." He says as they buckle their seat-belts and Jonathan starts the car.
That changes Will's mood instantly and he smiles. "Oh, I still have tons! You can have some of mine!"
"Oh. Thanks, bud."
Jonathan turns up the music on the radio, a song about someone who's in love, their heart is breaking, and for the first time Will can't relate to it.
A Christmas Memory
This was a different Christmas Eve from all the past ones. Most of them had been without his father and it got worse after his mother passed away. Last year had been a new direction; learning to appreciate what he did have even if those bitter feelings tried to sneak upon him. Indeed, Peter wouldn’t forget Christmas of 1984 with it being the first one as a Ghostbuster. This one had gone unexpected. If someone had told Peter that’d his guilty conscience would convince him to fly over to Kokomo, Indiana and spend it with the illegitimate child he’d never known of until three months ago, he’d thought that person was insane. He’d even give a snarky comment to boot.
That was running through Peter’s mind as he leaned back on the couch in the cozy living room. After Ruth had encouraged him to not be formal and kick his shoes off, he’d finally hunkered down. He partially dug his socked feet between the cushions and stared out the window. Snowflakes dusted the pane, but he could see the warm glow of lights outside. He was trying to think over things, maybe face the emotions he’d shoved far back when meeting Ruth and Laurie. One of them about Claire and knowing she was sadly gone. Every time he remembered it, he felt a horrible and sickening chill in his heart.
“You alright dear?” asked Ruth. She was putting another log into the fireplace.
“I’m okay,” Peter answered with a small head turn and polite smile.
“Ruth!” came the barking demand of Arnold from upstairs. “Ruth! Where’s my damn bottle opener?”
“You left it on the TV tray!” Ruth called up.
“Then bring it up woman! Do I have to do everything around this old shack?!”
With a sigh, Ruth picked up the bottle opener which had been left on an old TV tray in front of a rugged chair. It seemed like she wanted to converse with Peter, but her husband’s demands had to distract her. Arnold apparently had a tradition to have a couple of beers while watching the TV and would stumble off to his room with the newspaper. Not long after he settled down, he’d be demanding for another beer or like this time for the bottle opener. Peter wasn’t against having a beer himself, but he was disgusted by how Arnold behaved. There was no way he’d ever speak to a woman like that and he knew his limit before he got tipsy. Arnold didn’t seem to have any nice words to his wife. He didn’t even have a nice word to say about his grandchild! It wasn’t long before Peter could hear Arnold and Ruth debating over something. Thankfully, the radio was a bit louder and played classic carols.
“Sorry that man has to be your dad Claire,” Peter thought. “No wonder you had a hard time finding kind words about him.” Peter couldn’t forget when he and Claire were just friends and they opened about their lives. Revealing how she quit dance because of how hard he pushed her with little regard of her wellbeing had been shocking to hear. It was quite another to witness how Arnold was in person. Peter was right three years before telling Claire that they both got the short end of the stick when it came to families.
Now that he thought about, what happened for that Christmas? Peter remembered that he didn’t really spend Christmas with Claire that one year. She’d gone back to Kokomo for a week. She’d asked Peter to come with her, but he kept turning it down. It wasn’t only because of this negativity to the holiday, but it was his last year at Columbia University. It’d been exhausting from strenuous finals and tedious term papers. Peter spent half of Christmas catching up on sleep.
Not that he and Claire didn’t do something for the holidays. The day before she left, they went on a sweet date and exchanged gifts. She’d gotten him a new bomber jacket. Peter found her a pretty nightgown. He would’ve gotten her something more extravagant if it hadn’t been for Claire reminding him, she didn’t want anything. It’d taken Peter weeks to get an answer, but Claire finally admitted a new pair of pajamas was fine. She told him that with a little eyeroll and playful grin. Then again, that was Claire. She didn’t ask for things and was easily happy with what she already owned.
They didn’t see each other again until Peter came to meet her at the airport as planned on December 27th…at 1:00 a.m. because of Claire’s overly delayed flight. Despite the icy weather and painfully early morning, neither of them felt fatigued. They overwhelmed each other with a strong hug-where Peter practically lifted her off the ground- and deep kissing. It went on with Claire “insisting” it was too late for him to go back to his dorm and Peter “insisting” she wasn’t going back to her apartment alone. What happened then? If Peter told anyone he would’ve left out the details, but he would’ve hinted that whatever happened was more than twice. “Another round” as Claire suggested for the term. It'd been weeks since their last round together so there was pent up energy for each other. Combining that along with the late prescription update on Claire’s birth control pill for her polycystic ovary syndrome, maybe it wasn’t a surprise Laurie existed.
“Figures,” sighed Peter. He was back to his core struggle: he was now a dad and he didn’t want to be.
It wasn’t that he hated Laurie. Of course not! That was the issue: Peter didn’t know how to feel about her. He was told that when a parent first sees their child, they instantly love them. He didn’t feel that at all! She was a stranger to him. Peter hated imagining what Ray, Winston, Janine or Egon would say if he was honest about it. He’d have to keep that secret to himself. He’d have to keep digging through the graveyard of emotions.
He’d never really desired to get married or have a family of his own. He’d loved Claire and had serious relationships before, but even then, he couldn’t imagine anything further down the road. Besides, even though babies and kids were cute, they were a chore. Kids whined and threw tantrums. Babies cried, needed diapers changed and were always spitting up. He wouldn’t say he was the best with kids in general either. He still felt a pinch of guilt with what happened to Kenny Fenderman back in late spring. Yet whether he liked it or not, he was a dad.
“Ruth said I don’t have to be involved unless I want to,” he reminded himself. “Even Claire wrote in her journals she wouldn’t force me.” It was true. Even Arnold didn’t want Peter around, but that was due to his crass comments about Claire having slept with Peter. “So why am I here?” Peter asked himself again.
There was an answer to all this; there had to be. Somewhere buried deep down was the reason he reluctantly came out to Indiana. Even with being a psychologist, Peter sometimes had to deeply analyze himself.
Right on cue, he felt one of the cushions move and was distracted. It was Laurie. She dropped a thick book on the couch and then crawled up. She was still dressed pretty in her little red velvet dress; black mary jane’s and white tights. Seemed like it was staple to her wardrobe along with her still having a pacifier. She crawled upon the couch and wobbled over to Peter. Reflexively he held a hand up to balance her as she nearly stumbled, but she caught hold of his drawn-up knees. Her deep cornflower blue eyes sparkled, and he could see the creases of her smile behind her pacifier.
“You trying to get away from the noise?” he said half-heartedly to her. When she looked puzzled, Peter gestured up to the ceiling where he could still hear faint arguing. She only copied him and grinned. Then she pointed at the window where the snow was falling at a quicker pace.
“Sho,” she said with her muffled voice. “Sho.”
“You’ve got a mouthful there Ankle Biter,” Peter snickered. “Take that out of your mouth.” He gently pried the pacifier from her lips. Cleary not bothered; Laurie spoke again.  “Sho. Pwetty.” She looked past him and pointed to the side table behind him. “Mama pwetty,” she added.
Peter glanced over his shoulder to the picture frame sitting on the edge. It was hard for him to see that beautiful face. Laurie tried crawling around him to reach for the frame, but nearly squished herself between Peter and the cushions. Hesitating, he twisted around to get it.
“You want this?” he said kindly as he handed it to her. Laurie still stood up and held the frame. She looked almost sad. It was a picture of Claire from last Christmas. She was sitting in front of the tree with Laurie in her lap. From what anyone could guess, the little girl knew Claire wasn’t coming back, but she didn’t understand why.
“Mama,” Laurie repeated. Her tiny hand patted the picture. “Mama go.”
“Yeah, she’s gone,” Peter empathized. “My mama’s gone too.”
Laurie looked at him in such an odd way that Peter second guessed if she understood him. What she did next left him stunned. She crawled onto Peter’s lap and buried her face into his neck. Her little arms wrapped around him the best she could. Her hair was strong of her shampoo which smelled like cherry soda. After a pause, Peter gingerly wrapped one arm around her little figure. Laurie twisted around so she could look out the window but nuzzled her head under Peter’s chin.
“Sto-ee?” she asked.
“Story? Okay. What’s the book you brought?” Peter sensed if he flat out refused, Laurie may throw a fit. “You’ve got a real sense of humor,” he sighed when he realized what she brought. Of course, Laurie had brought up her copy of Peter Rabbit. (Laurie's book was a treasury of Beatrix Potter's stories.) He probably could’ve just recited the story since his mother used to read it to him when he was Laurie’s age. He read the familiar beginning:
“Once upon a time there were four little rabbits, and their names were-Flopsy, Mopsy, Cottontail and Peter.”
The story continued exactly from what Peter could recall. Mrs. Rabbit told her children to not enter Mr. McGregor’s garden, but Peter Rabbit disobeyed, and he ate some vegetables in the garden: Mr. McGregor tried to catch him, and Peter Rabbit got lost in the garden: Peter Rabbit finally got out and was put to bed while his siblings had bread, milk and blackberries for supper.
“What a shock its still the same after twenty years,” Peter said cynically.
“Mice,” said Laurie. “Sto-ee of mice. Pwease!”
Peter bit his lip. Those pleading blue eyes gazed up to him and Laurie pouted. Cute kid, but she was clever enough to pull on heartstrings. Even her conflicted father couldn’t say no to her face.
“What story of the mice?” Peter quickly flipped a couple of pages to find the story.  He couldn’t remember any Beatrix Potter works that were only about mice. Much to his surprise, he found a page with a mouse wearing glasses and sitting on a spool of thread while reading a newspaper.  The story? The Tailor of Gloucester.
“That one,” Laurie announced.
Despite feeling a little tired, Peter continued reading. He found that he kind of liked reading to Laurie. Not to mention, he liked the new tale. It was centered around Christmas and a poor tailor was trying to finish a coat for a mayor’s wedding day. What fascinated Peter most was when the tailor’s cat went outside at night:  there was something about the atmosphere that was so magical it almost seemed believable. At least, believable after being a ghostbuster for almost two years. According to Beatrix Potter, between Christmas Eve and Christmas morning, all the beasts could talk though very few could understand them. Birds, rats, dogs, mice and even the cat spoke.
While Peter was reading, Laurie’s eyelids drooped, and her eyelashes fluttered when she tried to stay awake. She was warm, comfy and best of all, safe while snuggled against Peter. The moment the last sentence was read, Laurie was asleep. Her breathing was gentle, and her tiny fingers unclenched. She looked so peaceful and sweet that Peter didn’t want to move. Instead, he glanced back out the window and tried analyzing his thoughts again.
“I used to sit with Mom like this,” Peter recalled to himself. “I know Mom couldn’t afford a lot, but I know she tried.”  The very few Christmas memories he had included his mother, Lydia Venkman, sitting on the sofa with him while the TV blared the cheerful specials or when they watched the stars. She’d bake gingersnaps with maple icing and got a small tree for them. Best of all, she’d play in the snow with Peter, even start a snowball fight. At that young age, Peter didn’t know any other mother that played in the snow with her kids like his mom. All memories reminded him how much he missed her.
“Of all the times I could use your advice Mom, it’d be right now,” he sadly thought.
Despite how tough his childhood had been, his mom had been the warmest and brightest light in his dark world. When she passed from pneumonia, the light was extinguished. It wasn’t until the friendship of Egon and Ray that helped brighten things again. Claire, being one of his most steady girlfriends, brought more. Then Winston and Janine helped shape the rest. There wasn’t any need to add a daughter into the mix. No, that wasn’t fair. Laurie was in a similar position having lost her mom and now, she’d have to grow up with her dad far away…
Peter eyed the little girl again. He swallowed.
“No. I can’t let that happen.”
He wouldn’t see her every day, but she didn’t need to have a darkened world like he did. She could have those warm lights from Ruth, the neighbors, the ghosbusters and from him. Peter didn’t know and there was still plenty to evaluate, but at least he could commit to that.
The next thing Peter knew was that he’d awake that next morning, Christmas day, still on the couch. Laurie would still be cuddled against him. He didn’t know yet it’d be one of Laurie’s favorite memories when she got older, let alone the first memory she remembered was when she first met her dad.
mean something | jack + robin
Robin had to force herself not to roll her eyes as the guy in front of her began droning on pretentiously about Pulp Fiction and other film classics, instead turning her gaze to her disappointingly empty cup. He’d been cute enough when the flirting began, and the thought of going back to his had been quite exciting for the first few minutes. Now though, as she took the last sip of her drink and he continued to just inflate his own ego, she was incredibly bored. Her eyes searched the room for anyone who could remedy her boredom, then rested on perhaps the best person to turn to for entertainment - Jack. They’d all shown up to the party together, as usual, dressed in what Robin had deemed their best group costume yet - Pulp Fiction (which she quickly regretted the moment this douchebag opened his mouth to discuss other Tarantino films). As they typically did, everyone had dispersed after the first round of shots at the party, already quite tipsy from a successful pregame, but it seemed Jack had found his way back into the main crowd of people. Robin turned back to - what had his name been? Eric? Andrew? It didn’t matter - and smiled in a faux apology. “Sorry, this has been a riveting conversation, but I’ve got to go make the rounds. You know how it goes.” And quickly turned to walk over to where Jack was standing, giving him a look as if to say. “For the love of god help me.” She reached into her shirt for her pack of cigarettes and held them up once she reached him.
It was decided that they would finally stop dressing like geeks for Halloween, like the horrid year prior of doing Ghostbusters, now that they were in college. And Jack knew he was hot shit tonight. He had on a suit (the first time he had ever worn one) and soaked in fake blood. There was no doubt in his mind that tonight he was getting laid. However he hadn’t realised how few girls knew Pulp Fiction well enough to understand his costume choice. What didn’t help was that everyone had dispersed and he couldn’t display the whole look. “You know, Vincent? Vincent Vega? That’s a pretty good fucking milkshake?” Another girl gave him a blank stare, turning away to hide the snigger and finding an excuse to leave. “Pulp Fiction!” He called after her departing body, swigging at the remains of his disgusting vodka concoction. “Well, your outfit is sh-,” He was cut off by Robin surprising him.
“Fancy a smoke, Carter?” She asked, nodding her head toward the back door.
He followed her nod towards the door and shrugged, following her out. “Yeah, it’s fucking shit in here anyway.”
Robin laughed and nodded as they walked out to the garden. “So shit. You’ve just saved me from a thirty minute conversation about which of Tarantino’s films is the best. Do you remember that guy in our French class who always quotes that movie Amelie? Well it turns out he has a hidden love for violent 90s films, too. What a dick.”
“Yeah, what a dick for him to actually possess movie knowledge.” He rolled his eyes, his mind still unable to shake off the rejection after rejection he had suffered tonight.
Two people dressed as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum held the door open for them as they crossed paths. There was one small group from the year above stood around the door, so he walked towards the back of the garden to stand with Robin. As he lit his own cigarette, he passed one to Robin, knowing she would be wanting to bum off him. “Where the fuck are Matt and Leo? They’re ruining the night for me.”
She gratefully accepted the cigarette, letting out a scoff and shrugging at his question as she leaned over for him to light it. Her eyes searched the garden as she took a long drag, moving to sit on the short stone wall behind them as she did so. “If I had to guess, Matt’s probably found that girl Evie and is bothering the shit out of her... And Leo’s probably become quite friendly with the night’s weed supplier by now.” Robin looked over at Jack with a teasing smile, nudging him with her free arm. “What’s got you so down, Jacky? It’s not like you to let a night out be ruined. I’m not sure it’s fair to blame them for ruining the night, anway,” She started, taking another drag of her cigarette with a dismissive shrug. “This party’s really just kind of shit, isn’t it?”
As soon as Evie was mentioned, Jack focused on a spot in the sky. It was probably a star, not a spot. It was an attempt to not lose his shit at the fact that Robin was probably right - he was talking to Evie and getting further than Jack ever would. The irony was not lost on him though that he was looking at a star as he bubbled with irritation over Evie, because she was like a star in many ways. He could only enjoy her from afar for one. He finally refocused on the present and turned back to Robin when she prodded with more questions.
If she had been sober, then she may have noticed how quiet Jack became at the mention of Evie. Matt had been a right asshole about it to him since that first college party they’d been to, and even though Robin hadn’t been there when it happened, she knew how upset Jack had been over it. She was quite drunk at this point in the night though, especially after practically downing her last drink to get through horrific conversation, so his upturned gaze at the sky didn’t faze her at all.
“Well, if they were here then I wouldn’t have to explain my costume all the fucking time to stupid girls.” He bit on the end of his cigarette as he muddled over this. “This great suit is wasted on this shit. I thought for sure I’d get laid tonight… Why didn’t you just get with that guy? You’re rubbing it in my handsome, but pathetic face that you’ve now turned someone down, you know.”
Robin let out a snort at his complaints over the costume, thinking back to her wishes over the past thirty minutes to have a less obvious one, and simply shrugged. “Well, I’m here now, and we’re the two most iconic characters from the film. We could always ask to play a song and perform the dance for everyone, that’s sure to get you laid.” Her words dissolved into laughter as the ridiculousness of her suggestion washed over her. She rolled her eyes and looked back to Jack, lifting the cigarette to her lips once more.
“Nah, I’m not in the mood for it anymore now.” Jack answered seriously, not getting that Robin was merely joking.
“First off, you’re hardly pathetic. These girls are just assholes. Secondly, if a guy can’t even keep me entertained for ten minutes, why the fuck should I assume he’ll be a good lay? I’m not wasting my time with that shit.” She shook her head. “I have standards, and you should too.”
“I do have standards,” He argued, trying to think what those standards are. “They’re just low to the ground.”
She motioned to the opposite side of the garden where a group of girls stood in a huddle. “So what if these lame girls dressed as superheroes don’t understand your costume? That just means they have shit taste in films and in guys.” She shrugged again, letting out a puff of smoke and tilting her head to watch it trail into the sky. “You’re a catch, Jacky. And a much better conversationalist than that douchebag inside.”
This caught Jack off-guard. He wasn’t used to his friends ever building him up unless it was Matt building him up to let him fall. He didn’t know whether to believe it or not. He squinted in scepticism.
“What? Nah, you’re just messing -,” He broke off laughing, before looking at her intensely again. “You actually think I’m a catch? Please continue on complimenting on. It might be the only thing that saves tonight.”
Robin rolled her eyes at his request and turned her head back up to the sky as she laughed and shook her head, releasing another trail of smoke into the sky. “You’re such a dick.” She turned back to Jack then, putting out her cigarette out on the stone wall she was sitting on. She purposely took a few moments longer to smash it out, then offered a casual shrug. “Of course you are. You’re one of the funniest people I’ve ever met, you’re well dressed, and you always share your cigarettes with me.”
Eagerly awaiting for Robin to compliment him more or to reveal that it was all a joke, he stomped on his cigarette and hopped onto the wall to sit next to Robin that he had been previously just leaning against, looking up at her. Now he was better situated to smile down at her.
“Someone’s got to share their cigarettes with you, because you’ll never fucking buy your own.”
“I resent that! Even if it’s true.” Robin let out another small laugh, then looked at Jack and teasingly squeezed his cheeks with her hand. “You’re just so damn charming, Jacky. These girls don’t realize what they’re missing.”
He hit her hands off his face and one of his hands stayed playing with one of hers for an extended moment. It gave Jack a very, very stupid idea. Maybe it was the cold, maybe it was the fact they were both drunk, maybe it was fact that they were dressed in this couple costume (that he knew Leo was already pissed off about), maybe it was the fact that this was the only positive feedback he had received from a girl tonight, maybe it was because he thought hearing this from Robin was maybe better than getting it from one of the idiot girls he had spoken to that night or maybe it was just because Robin looked very pretty in this light.
Robin giggled as Jack swatted at her hands, a warmth spreading across her face as one of her hands stayed in his for a moment after. She soberly registered in the back of her mind that she should pull it away, but the drunken part of her, the majority in this moment, quite liked the feeling.
He got the stupid idea to look up from their hands and at her mouth and lean in ever so slightly, not daring to take it too far in case she rejected him, but just enough so she knew the thought was crossing his mind.
Sitting there, laughing together, hands touching - Robin could have kissed Jack. And then he was looking at her mouth, leaning just close enough where she could easily close the small distance between their lips, and for a moment she wondered if she had said that out loud? She hadn’t though, and here he was, with the same idea as her. Robin looked at Jack’s eyes for a second, then leaned in to kiss him.
Robin felt taken aback at how natural it felt for her to be leaning in to kiss Jack, but, as she quickly reminded herself, they were both drunk so it was obvious that it would feel natural - right? She didn’t have to question that for long as she soon heard both of their names being called from inside over the music. Matt and Leo. Jack heard their names being called too. They both quickly pulled away in time to see the two boys walk out to the garden, unaware for a moment that Jack and Robin were together, hidden near the back.
Robin smirked at them as they approached, glancing over at Jack casually. “Glad to see you’ve finally reappeared, boys. We were just talking about you two over a nice smoke, weren’t we Jacky?”
Jack was flustered and hid it by nodding a lot. “Mmmhmm yeah…”
“We were saying it’s a shit party.” Matt announced, as in it was time for them all to leave. Leo then leaned forward and began unapologetically puking.
“I need a piss, you guys can deal with this.” Jack exited, patting Leo on the back on his way.
He dared to turn back around at Robin as he waited for someone to get out of the way so he could get back inside. Suddenly he was sobering and wondering why Robin had tried to kiss him back. That’s what she was doing, right? He almost kissed Robin. What. The. Fuck? He wasn’t allowed to do that, right? And he would never do that again. He would be full of guilt in the morning.
