time for more soren character analysis:

petrine’s battle conversation with soren in chapter 23 has always been a favorite of mine, and now that i’m looking at it again i noticed a few extra details:

it’s important to mention that this battle takes place directly after ike and soren’s a-support, in which soren confesses he’s a branded and expects to be shunned, only for ike to tell him that it doesn’t matter and he wants soren to stay by his side regardless.

anyway, besides “Now let me show you true fear!” being a really hard line, it’s really cool to see how soren’s reaction to his branded status being pointed out changes so sharply over the course of a handful of chapters. i already analyzed his reaction to nasir’s betrayal where he’s agitated over the fact that he could have prevented it if nasir hadn’t threatened to reveal him being branded to the army, so seeing him being so confident in himself is great, and i’ll touch on why here.

one of the reasons i like to say the game treats ike and soren’s a-support as canon is actually this particular conversation. soren, having just been reassured that ike will always want him at his side regardless of who or what he is, now suddenly has had his biggest fear and insecurity taken off his back. he doesn’t need to hate himself for being branded because ike, the only person who’s ever truly mattered to soren, doesn’t care at all.

back to the conversation, soren’s judgment over the situation at hand is no longer clouded by his own self-loathing. instead of comparing them as branded and seeing himself as just as horrid and disgusting as petrine (tiger branded, fun fact), he’s able to instead compare them as individuals and realize that what he’s done up to that point will never measure up to the atrocities she’s committed. i think the best part personally is just how disgusted soren looks by the notion he and petrine are the same, because he’s right— him being cutthroat and pragmatic is nothing compared to everything petrine has done in daein’s name— and the fact he can clearly see this means that, for the very first time, he’s finally starting to heal from the mental wounds inflicted upon him by his childhood.

overall, i like this little nod to soren starting to learn to grow and change from who he was at the beginning of fe9. it’s more clearly seen in radiant dawn, where he’s calmer to the point ranulf even comments on it, but these little inklings implying the start of soren’s healing are really cool to see.

the level at which people are misusing the term "Never Again" in the far left absolutely infuriates me.

"Never Again" means we as Jews will pay attention to the warning signs, will not mindlessly allow antisemitism to fester and take over our communities, we will fight back. it means we will be proud. it means we will not let you hate us without a word of refusal.

"Never Again" is a warning for us, it is a reminder that what happened then can happen now -- is happening now. The Far Left doesn't get to use it against us. You don't get to turn our tragedies into hate-speech and antisemitic rhetoric.

on a more serious note with the "reko being jealous that alice is more normal" fact, its probably just an oversight, but it does make me think.

most likely, reko is viewing it from more of a child-star view point, wherein she was forced from a young age to be in the public eye and her brother was sheltered from that. there's also the whole "our mom was weird" comment which always kinds of stands out to me; if she was weird enough, both of them may have a skewed view of whats considered "normal". third point, it may be a matter of reko confusing "enjoyable to be around" with "normal", if we think about how reko had issues pushing people away before*. but im also wondering if his personality was different before he spent time in jail. murder is a very serious charge and prison has completely different functions than the outside world, so if we view alice as someone who was before somewhat reserved but amiable (maybe even with people-pleasing tendencies? needs citation) beforehand, it makes sense that'd he'd have gone off the wall a little bit as a reaction to being in such a drastically different environment- and thats not even considering stuff like the effects of solitary confinement, which if he did undergo wouldve left some scars mentally and change the way he might interact with people. we also dont know how his case was handled in court, aka how severe his charges are; could he have had a life sentence? i doubt death row, since thats something i feel would have come up at some point if that were so. even if it wasnt for life, he probably was expecting to spend decades in prison, and would have very little reason to try and stay acclimated to the outside world since he'd be in prison for the long run. its not impossible all of this could coalesce into us seeing a much more guarded and less well socialized version of alice. he probably still had his eccentricities before, of course, but maybe he was even just a little bit better at hiding them or using them to his advantage. *may only apply to band members

i remember that mana shim said that part of the reason why she didnt want to speak out originally about her abuse was because there was so much concern about the nwsl folding like how the wusa and wps did. that there was this feeling like 'i dont want to be the one to ruin it' because so many of these women had fought so hard to get a professional women's league started in america. these players had a minimum salary of <$7,000 and were expected to try and play full time professional football on that salary. non-national team players had a salary maximum of $31,500. many of them worked multiple jobs to fund their careers.

i can never really take arguments about the quality of women's sports seriously.

women's football was banned completely for 50 years in england. 50 years, the men got to play and learn and improve and adapt. 50 years, the men's game evolved. and 50 years, the women were banned. are you don't think that might have an effect on the sport as a whole? many other women's sports had similar bans at one point or another.

the men can do virtually whatever they like and get paid hundreds of thousands – millions, even.

did you know the manchester united women's team got a brand new, team specific building last season? and in june it was announced that the men's indoor facility would be needing to go under construction so it could be "revamped"? and that the women's facility was handed over to the men for training? and that the women will now train in portable buildings?

but yes, of course. talk to me about the product. talk to me about quality. because we must be objective, we must look at the numbers. its so obvious, of course, the men are simply outperforming the women! the men must be better. there is no other explanation.
