Forage Feast: crime edition

Rayla, Runaan, and Ethari headed out to forage in the Moonshadow Forest to celebrate with a special meal. They came back with all this food.

Extremely curious how you forage for a cheese wheel. Where does one gather a baguette in the Moonshadow Forest? Or a whole stack of pancakes plus fixins? The bread boule in the center?

Immediate headcanon: "forage" is Moonshadow for petty banditry as much as it means "picking fruit and etc." If it ain't nailed down, it's free real estate! Rayla and her dads just waylaid some travelers with lax security, played a couple tricks on them, and made off with a couple of food items per encounter, until they had enough food to carry home and celebrate Callum joining them.

This would be an amazing Moonshadow cultural tradition. The family that absconds together, bonds together!

My Dragon Prince Boards season 7, episode 702

The time has finally come for me to talk about my boards for the last season of the Dragon Prince! Wow, time flies!

To be honest season 7 was such a hard season to make. Telling a good story is always a challenge, but ending one, oof! that is an herculean job!

I remeber everyone being super stressed during the production of this season, because time was always in short supply, and it is really hard to produce great art with little time, haha.

Also, I think that after a year and a half working non stop doing boards for the show, most of us where starting to feel exhausted, and you can see it on my boards, they are much less polished than usual.

But, no matter the context and circumstances, we always try to deliver the best we can and tell the ending of this arc in the most satisfactory way possible.

Lets start with my sequences. First one is the one with Ezran's council in the Banther Lodge.

This one starts with the little exchange between Soren and Corvus, I really like these two. I think they grew on me as a duo during my time in the show. Soren was already one of my favorites, but by the end of season 7, Corvus and Soren was a top pair for me, too.

I think that, whatever you think their relationship is, physical touch is a thing between this two, they are always touching each other, there is some vulnerability that they allow with each other that is endearing.

If you read my comments about my boards in season 6, one of the things I was talking about is how sometimes the expressions we draw in boards don't translate that well to the final animation (This happens in a lot of shows, and it's because of limitation on the face rig of the characters, nothing related to the talent of our crew, because they are all super talented) This little shot is another case, I wanted Callum to feel like "Oh boy, shit is hitting the fan!"

I think this scene is mostly about the conflict between points of view, Callum and Rayla wanting for Ezran to free (and forgive) Runaan as soon as possible, while Ezran is struggling with his emotions. It's a hard one.

To be honest I understand Ezran 100% and I know that the right thing for him would be eventually to forgive Runaan, but is not something that could happen inmediatly. Grieve and angry are feelings that can get poisonus really easily, and they need time to heal and allow perspective.

I think Ralyla made the wrong choice bringing Runaan to Katolis.

Anyway, I wanted to play this sequence (and the next one) a little as a power play between the brothers. There are two forces pulling Callum rigth now, and the tension is growing because of it. I like this shot, I think, is cool.

My next sequence is the continuation of the Banther Lodge Council scene. Rayla is out of the building right now, and Callum is deeply distracted.

But we start with a little coment of comedy with Soren "testing" the bread. This shot ended flipped, but the idea is still the same, I am glad the keept the moment of Soren putting the bread on his mouth, haha.

Again this scene mix two trains of though or conflicts together, in one hand you have Ezran trying to figure out how to lead his people in a way that makes sure a tragedy like the burning of Katolis doesn't happen again. And in the other hand the struggle between Callum loyalties, and his inhability to be what Ezran needs him to be right now.

This is not hate to Callum, I think that his desicions are pretty ok taking in consideration that is he still a teeneager. But I feel that he gets tunnel vision when things are related to Rayla, and he failed miserably as a brother and member of the council during this time.

While I think Callum is right, Ezran should forgive Runaan, he should be there to provide love and support to his brother, and advice and perspective to his king. Space for Ezran to come to the conclusion that forgivenes is the right path.

Anyway, I had this gesture boarded with Ezran hitting the air, but they ended adding the cup there for him to toss. I don't know how I feel about it, It's fine (specially if you talke into consideration that the Anya pick up the cup and give it back to Ezran) but feels a little off to me. Not sure why, tho.

I like Anya and Ezran relationship. I think I would appreciate it if she also took the place that Callum was failing to fulfill and gave some space to Ezran to grieve and process his sadness in a more intimate level. Like as friends more than as "heads of state". But anyway, she is cool, I am glad Ezran had someone as his side during this time.

I remember that one of the instructions I got for this sequence was to make sure that Ezran feels like a mob boss. Hahaha. Funny, tho. But besides that, I think that something that I was glad to see and board was Ezran taking more action and having more agency.

Maybe we can disagree with his point of view, but it was great to finally see him taking the reins of the kingdom, being active and assertive with his actions.

My last two sequences in this episode were the talk of Callum and Ezran close to the fireplace. I think this was an instance of Callum trying to be Ezran brother, giving him support and love and helping him to see the erron of his ways.

BUT, and this is a big but, I feel that all of this feels empty and, from Ezran point of view, manipulative; because after this talk Callum right away decides not only to "betray" Ezran but also to leave him alone. And that was not pretty wise of him, imo.

It is always a pleasure to draw any character making a suspicious face, hahaha "I don't trust you":

I think during the first part of the talk, the sibilings are on pretty opposite sides, there is a rift between them, and it is hard to close. But then there is more space for vulnerability and trust.

I think a really significant momen is for Ezran to remove his crown. "I am not talking as the king, but as your brother" kind of moment. Humanizes him a lot and shows the sincerity of his words.

He is confesing here, how he is tired, how this dury felt on his shoulders even when he was not ready for it, and how much he is trying to carry the burden, but oh boy, how heavy is the crown!

And I feel that this is the part when Callum made a mistake. Instead of listen to him, to recognize his pain, to offer his aid and support, some kind of "you don't need to do this alone" kind of thing, he brings the topic back to Runaan.

And then he shots the shot: "You forgave Zubeia" And ouch! I mean, he is right, that is something that Ezran did, but I don't think this is the moment to bring it. But again, the conflict here is that none of them can see the other right now. Callum is too worried about Rayla and Runaan, and Ezran is too hurt and overwheelmed.

And I wanted to make the shift clear, so Callum literally points fingers at Ezran. He demands action, he expect his brother to do what he wants him to do, not what Ezran needs to do. In an ideal world there would be a trial for Runaan, one where we can hear both parties, where Ezran can express his feelings his doubts and grieve, that could end in him finding forgivenes in his heart.

But it is not an ideal world. Things are falling apart, and the struggles between the needs and wants of characters are in conflict. So, people make bad decisions. That is good writing if you ask me.

Then Zym intervines, he wants Ezran to forgive Runaan, not for the same reasons than Callum, tho.

I think in Zym's mind is more an attempt to get "the old Ezran back". So Callum and Zym try to make their point together. I wanted to paint it as if Zym has this naive approach to the stituation, while Callum is a little more manipulative (I don't think that on porpouse) being like "look, even Zym agrees" failing to see why Zym is agreeing. I think the sin of Callum in all this episode is blindness (or tunel vision as we said before)

And kinda works. Not because Ezran is ready to forgive, but because I feel that there is something inside Ezran that thinks like Zym too. That maybe there is a way to go back to be like he was before.

And that is the thing, pain and grieve change you, and accept that change is part of growing up. Aaravos talk about that a lot this season. So there is a little truce, a moment of "maybe" from Ezran. I really like to draw this two together.

Sadly this moment gets interrupted by Soren asking for help. And from here is downhill. I think Callum's actions after this point did not help at all to Ezran to heal or change his mind.

The fact that Callum decided to leave probably made Ezran wound worst, and any hope that this conversation could bring for the brothes to get back together gets shattered.

Great setting up of their conflict for this season, imo.

okay. here. uh. here are my thoughts on season 7 in no particular order. spoilers ahead, obviously.

actually really upset about no confirmed sorvus. it was the main thing I wanted this season

definetly some pacing issues this time around... yeah. it's hard to write and/or execute a great final season

there were so many thing I just feel like didn't have resolvement or payoff?? (all the more reason for ARC 3, though!)

“Oh ho, now?" Nyx leaned obnoxiously close, her eyebrows raising. "Have you told her that?”

“She told me," Callum said, angry all over again suddenly that... she actually hadn't told him that and yet they weren't- "So I’m tentatively assuming that she knows.”

“Oh ho? So she broke up with you and yet you’re still adventuring together, risking your lives for each other, making love eyes at each other at every opportunity… ah, to be young and in love and a garbage fire of collective awkwardness of such radiance as to light up the heavens-”

“Yeah!” Ezran agreed, walking up to them. Oh no. Hopefully Nyx would tone down the… everything… around an 11-year-old, but… considering he had been 14 himself when he’d first encountered Nyx, he didn’t have high hopes. “It’s gross and they’re so dumb, and here I am, a doomed onlooker!"

“You got the family braincell, I see,” Nyx said, winking at Ezran.

Ezran nodded sagely. “My blessing and my curse, ‘tis true.”

Really?! Did Ez really have to form an alliance with every new person they met to tag-team roast him?!

Nyx turned away from Ezran, her unwanted attention firmly back on him now. “I still need the full status update on my favorite dysfunctional lovebugs!” Nyx would keep prodding, and Callum didn’t want her to prod Rayla- “You know there’s another ex-lovebug who could tell me-“ Did he just curse that idea into Nyx’s head?! “But you’re currently the less puke-smelling option, so…"

Nyx really didn't subscribe to the idea of sensitive subjects you should keep your trap shut about.

“We… broke up. Like you said.” One way to say it. But he wasn’t giving Nyx any ammunition to use against Rayla. “Then made up. Kind of. We’re friends, just not… lovebugs.”

“Friends with benefits?”

“What friends do you have?” Ezran asked, all wide-eyed, vicious innocence. “Do you not consider friendship a benefit?”

“Hey!” Nyx looked insulted. “I thought we were allies against yon magus of maladroit you tragically must call brother?”

“My allegiances are many and inscrutable!” Ez stuck his tongue out at Nyx.

“’Allegiances’? ’Inscrutable’? Sheesh, kid, how old are you? And what awful, terrible company do you keep?!”

“11. And… politicians.”

“Oh no, you’re serious?! Oh kid, the depths of my condolences is one of them yawning chasms of endless screaming-“

“Oi?!” Villads yelled. “Matey? Riggin’ snagged!”

“I don’t hold court with betrayers, anyway,” Nyx said, incredibly hypocritically for someone who’d stranded them in a desert, and she pushed off the deck and was airborne, heading off towards the center mast.

“What is the benefit of being ‘friends with benefits’?” Ezran asked, looking around to Callum and then Soren, who had just arrived with Hat perched on his head. “The friendship is pretty obviously a benefit of being friends without having to say it, so I know it isn’t that, I just said that because Nyx was being mean.”

“Oh, I know!” Soren said, eagerly. “It’s s-“

“Sandwiches!” Callum cut him off. “Sandwiches, Soren! Remember?”

“Riiiiight!” Soren winked, exaggeratedly. “Sandwiches. Got it. Corvus makes the best bread sandwich, extra mayonnaise-“

“Please, Soren,” Callum choked. “Please, let’s… talk about something else. Anything else. Please.”

Once I get past the next 4 chapters of Downtime’s Up, I have most of the rest of the story written, just… it’s been rough going to write anything lately

Chapter Five | Curious

Rey usually slept throughout the night, but the night before was a weird one. He’d had a little too much to drink before bed and, try as he might, needed to get up to go to the bathroom. He was quick about it, but when he went back to the warmth of his blankets something just felt off about the room.

It didn’t stop him from going right back to sleep though.

First thing the next morning, Rey noticed that the feeling of tension was gone, so he didn’t think anything of it until later.

It was a Saturday morning and Soren had made chocolate and banana muffins as well as a loaf of something called “zucchini bread,” which sounded absolutely weird to him. Soren promised that it was going to be great, but Rey would determine that later. For now, he had something else to grumble about.

Cleaning.

He hated cleaning his room, especially when it was on a Saturday. Saturday was meant as a day of fun and games, but with Christmas coming up, Soren said that he couldn’t get them any of the gifts they wanted until some of their other things were cleared out or put away.

Soren was usually fair as a brother, but this felt like cruel and unusual punishment.

Still, Rey decided it was better to comply than try and fight his oldest brother on this one. He really wanted these things for Christmas and, if he knew his brother, Soren would deliver as long as Rey and Dorian both held up their end of the bargain.

So, the boys set off to work.

“Don’t forget to check under the beds too! Last time you shoved everything under your beds, and that isn’t cleaning!” Soren called after them as the two scurried to their room.

Rey tackled his side of the room while Dorian tackled his. Most of Dorian’s stuff was tangled cords and on their shared work desk while Rey’s inventions mostly littered the floor. On his hands and knees, he scoured the ground for all of his batteries and tools.

“Don’t forget to put your stuff in the bins, Rey,” reminded Dorian. “Yours is the bottom two since you’re short and mine are on top because I’m tall.”

“You’re not that much taller than me,” Rey grumbled as he shuffled on his knees to the drawers and pulled them open to organize his batteries and tools. Everything had a “proper place,” but putting things back was never really Rey’s strong suit. It was a painstaking process, but he and Dorian both were making good headway.

It wasn’t until Rey made it to the edge of his bed chasing a few stray batteries that he dared to glimpse under at the atrocity in the shadows. Already, he knew he wouldn’t get to any of his inventions later today. There were stray nuts and bolts, screwdrivers, and even a few toys that he noticed right off of the bat.

This was going to be a monumental task, and he didn’t like it. The young boy groaned and laid down on his stomach and began pulling out the various totes and things that were just laying there. Three handfuls in, he noticed something that he had forgotten about for such a long time.

It was his stuffed lion toy.

It was something he used to love playing with when he was younger and a toy he hadn’t seen in over a year.

This is where it went, he thought as he pulled it out from behind the leg of his bed. As he did, he felt his heart sink as his fingers were immediately met with stuffing on one side. He pulled it out and examined his once beloved toy and instantly noticed the gaping gash in the back where the patch had completely been ripped away. Shoulders slumping, he felt more determined than ever to find the piece of missing fabric rather than clean the wires and bits up from his previous endeavors.

Try as he might and after pulling everything out from under the bed, the patch was nowhere to be found. It was so weird. It was one of the patches he remembered Soren putting on because it was a starry blue fabric that was very soft. The longer he looked at it, the more curious he felt himself get.

How could a whole patch just go missing? And why were the threads cut? Rey knew enough about crafts and creation to know the difference between tearing, snapping, and cutting threads and wires. What had happened to his toy?

“Ow! Rey! You’re supposed to be cleaning, not making more of a mess,” scolded Dorian, whose area was still untidy because he’d gotten distracted looking at his old video games. He’d stepped backward onto one of Rey’s more robotic toys that had made its way into Dorian’s area.

“Sorry, Dorian. I was just trying to find the patch. Have you seen it? It’s blue and has stars on it,” stated Rey.

“The only thing I’ve seen is your toys all over the ground. Come on! We can still have movie night if you hurry,” Dorian scolded as he handed Rey the toy. Rey sighed and took the toy. He was about to put it away into one of the totes that slid under his bed when he noticed something else odd.

In the claw hand of the toy, he noticed what looked like a piece of tissue wrapped in a dark brown cloth. Confusion set in as he plucked the fabric off of the fingers of his toy and examined the folded fabric. He pulled out the piece of tissue and examined both the fabric and the white torn piece that had what Rey thought looked like a few specks of blood on it.

His curiosity was getting the better of him, and he hated a mystery he couldn’t solve.

“Hey, Dorian. Did you cut your foot when you stepped on this?” asked Rey as he held up the tissue piece to his older brother.

“Me? No. Why?” asked Dorian as he continued to put away his things slowly but surely.

“Well, I found a bit of blood on this tissue piece. It was in this fabric all wrapped up,” stated Rey. Dorian, for the first time, stopped what he was doing to go over to Rey and see what it was he was talking about.

“Well, that’s weird. No, I didn’t cut myself. And where’d you get that?” Dorian reached for the other fabric piece, but Rey managed to keep it snatched away.

“It is the thing the bloody tissue was in,” he explained. “And you don’t need to see with your hands.”

“Well, then you’re not getting my help in figuring out what it is,” retorted Dorian.

“What are you two going round about?” He didn’t need to speak loudly to get their attention. The usual thunderous voice of their older brother, Soren, startled them and they whipped around to see him standing there with a laundry basket on his hip and a confused look resting heavily on his brow. “And you two are supposed to be cleaning, not making more of a mess.”

“I tried to tell him!” Dorian interjected. “But Rey is over here pulling everything out from his bed and getting distracted!”

“You’re one to talk! And I was cleaning under the bed, like Soren asked, unlike you getting distracted with your old games,” Rey retorted in defense. “And I only got distracted because I found this thing here.”

Rey stood up and held out the blood speckled tissue fragment and the little cloth piece, placing it into Soren’s hand after huffing over to him.

Soren, keen hazel eyes used to taking in information all at once, accepted Rey’s offering and examined it quickly. He was a bit alarmed that he spotted a bit of blood on the edges of the tissue and perplexed as he noticed that the fabric Rey had brought him looked like it had been sewn into a tiny pocket.

“Was the tissue in this thing?” he asked, to which Rey nodded. “And neither of you are hurt or recognize it?”

“No and no,” replied Rey. “And a patch from my toy is missing too.” Rey hopped over the totes and snagged his stuffed lion from the ground and was back at Soren’s side in an instant. “The blue patch is missing.”

Rey was right. The blue starry patch was missing from the lion that Soren had fixed a few years ago. He remembered it because it was such a pretty material and had a different texture than the other patches he’d used for Rey’s lion. He felt his own curiosity mounting, but there had to be a reasonable explanation.

“Weird. And you haven’t found it?” asked Soren. The youngest boy shook his head and gazed up at Soren with those pale blue eyes they didn’t share. He sighed and gave his younger brother a reassuring pat on the shoulder.

“Well, we’ll get a new patch next time we’re out. Okay? As for this thing here, I would say don’t worry about it. It probably got caught on something and you just didn’t notice,” stated Soren. Rey stared at Soren disbelievingly, but Soren raised his finger to keep his brother focused. “Until we can investigate further, you’d better finish cleaning your room. I’m getting my chores done for movie night. It’ll be lonely there all by myself.”

“No!” Rey and Dorian cried in unison as they immediately scurried back to their room to work doubly hard.

In the meantime, Soren brought the laundry to the bathroom where their washer and drier unit sat and examined the two pieces Rey gave him further. Sure enough, the piece of tissue had something that looked like blood on it. It was so odd. It was too small of a piece to have come from him cutting himself shaving, and the cloth had odd but tiny stitching.

If he didn’t know better, he’d say that it looked like a pocket meant to hold the piece of tissue.

But why would that be a thing? This pocket was so small.

Nothing could be this small and need pockets, right?

TDP S7E3 Rewatch (feat. my commentary)

Janai and Amaya! It’s been a while and I missed you queens <3

You think the soldiers wanted to prank the traitors? They looked so serious

Queens of Mercy, Janai must really take after her grandmother (SIDE NOTE, THIS REMINDED ME OF SOMETHING ELSE I’LL TALK ABOUT IT AT THE END)

I feel like we’re in a weird grey area with Janaya + Gren. Janai seems confident reading sign language in private conversations with Amaya, so why does Gren interpret when it’s just the three of them? I know it’s for the audience’s sake but I have to wonder if they’ll change things up for Arc 3

Oof the smash cut to Ezran slamming that elf figurine on the table. The first time I saw this scene I was blown away by the return of the bloodthirsty elf imagery from S1

Ez seems far angrier about Callum’s betrayal than Rayla’s, likely because he understands they’re both choosing to prioritise their own dads

“You’re the bread” oh my god the way Soren pouts when Corvus glares

Claudia’s nose-finger-move! Her glee is infectious! I love character quirks in animation!

Aanya and Ezran’s friendship is so important in this season <3

When I watched S7 the first time, I got to this scene and immediately picked up on Miyana’s pregnancy, but I need to shoutout Gren for his reaction because, same buddy

The whole Garden of Innocents is GORGEOUS

Terry having the same reaction to dark magic as S1-2 Soren was a big hint as to what direction his arc would go

The Mage Wars backstory was nice to see!

Claudia and Aaravos’ dynamic is so…intriguing this season. I’m very torn between finding it endearing and disturbing how quickly they grew attached to each other

“My child will avenge me” a not-so-subtle parallel to Harrow and Viren in S2 (“it’s name will be vengeance!”)

God Rena’s voice acting in this scene was really great

Soren shielding Ezran alert!

I can’t help but wonder if a fire ruby would’ve contained enough sun magic to fuel the spell Viren cast to save Duren/Katolis? If there’s another world where Aanya’s parents were honest about Duren’s secret, and none of the queens died?

Janai laying down the law was brutal, but reasonable considering what’s happened

Overall thoughts:

This was one of my ‘meh’ episodes from my first S7 viewing, and honestly? My opinion hasn’t changed much since. It feels like a middle child caught between True Heart and Unfinished Business. There’s a lot of really interesting lore developments and character interactions that left me theorising and analysing previous seasons. It’s still a good episode, but it’s just…good (if that makes sense).

Now, the thing I was reminded of, was a theory I’d had in the lead up to S7 regarding Aaravos, Aditi, and Kim’dael. Basically, I had this idea that 300 years ago, Kim’dael offered her loyalty to Aaravos if he could kill Aditi as revenge for her mercy bind (since she couldn't do it herself). For Aaravos, taking Aditi off the board and gaining Kim'dael's services was a two birds-one stone situation, so he did it, not realising that choice would cost him his freedom. I was going into this season imagining Kim’dael making an appearance as a lieutenant for Aaravos and a mentor figure to Claudia.

I don’t know, it felt like a cool idea and I can’t believe I forgot about it until I heard the soldiers calling Janaya the Queens of Mercy

Soren looked… a lot more different than Corvus had been expecting. Especially so now that all of them were in his kitchen while he was making bread.

His hair was longer– a lot longer, pulled back into a bun with a few strands hanging in his face. A light blue tunic hung loosely around his shoulders, with red embroidery that matched his red undershirt around the neckline. His sleeves were rolled up to his elbows, his hands coated in flour as he separated the dough into small sections.

“So, what, you’ve just been here for the past seven years?” Rayla asked, eyebrows raised. Callum had left earlier to get her, the twins in tow. He had refused to give any explanations until they had arrived.

“Yeah, pretty much.” He nodded, rolling one of the small sections into a thinner rope. “It wasn’t the whole time, considering how far here is from Katolis on foot.” Soren notably refused to make eye contact with any of them, instead focusing more on tying the small rope of dough into an intricate knot.

“But why?” King Ezran asked him. 

He paused, resting his hands on the island.

“Look, the answer I’m going to give is probably  going to piss most of you off one way or another, so how about you just tell me what you’d want to hear and I say yes or no.”

“Banther attack?” Callum guessed.

“Got distracted and lost?” Rayla shrugged.

“Ran away with your secret lover and became a pirate captain?” Gren translated for Amaya.

“No, no, and what?” Soren raised his eyebrows at Amaya, finally looking up.

“I think she’s joking.” Janai cleared her throat slightly. Amaya gave a small grin in response.

Corvus glanced around at all of them. He thought he knew the reason but didn’t want to say anything in case he was right.

“So… What was the reason?” Callum asked him

Soren blew out a breath. “I wanted to be able to live without feeling like the sky was going to start falling at any moment. Figured going somewhere nobody knew who I was would help. And it did.” He drummed his fingers against the island.

Corvus felt his eyebrows crease. “Soren-”

“I really don’t want to hear your guys’ pity right now.” He started rolling another small section of dough into a rope.

“Dad?”

Everyone’s heads snapped to look at the doorway. Leda stepped into the kitchen, sidestepping Gren to stand next to Soren.

Rayla’s eyes widened slightly. “You have a daughter?”

“Right, you weren’t here for that conversation.” Soren wrapped an arm around Leda’s shoulders, who waved. “This is Leda.”

“Hiiii!” Scout grinned widely while waving excitedly from Callum’s lap. Meanwhile, Juno was half asleep in Rayla’s arms.

Soren smiled softly “The twins are adorable.”

“They may look like it now, but they’re absolute chaos most of the time.” Callum kissed the side of Scout’s head.

“Well that reminds me of someone.” He nudged Leda.

“Hey, I wasn’t that bad.” She argued.

“The day we met you refused to let go of my leg.”

“Okay, I was five, that doesn’t count because I barely remember it.”

Corvus smiled softly at them. He had missed so much of Soren’s life, but he was still him.

He was still the man he loved. And he didn’t think it was possible, but he might’ve loved him even more than before.

It might have been the manbun.

These are thoughts I wrote down while watching. They are very rambling and might make no sense. It’s also… very long. I still need time to process my feelings about the season but I’m mostly happy! Spoiler warning obviously.

• Ok so he did like one spell. Still not as powerful as he’s been set up to be

My prediction is they’re gonna kill Aaravos cause that sets up his return for a possible third arc. I’m not sure I really want that to happen but I feel like that’s where they’re going. I think I prefer Callum using dark magic to imprison him (without being killed somehow) cause I’m a sucker for dark Callum, but I doubt that will happen. Welp, let’s see!

He has extreme paranoia and is constantly feeling different and looking over his shoulder

maybe some Corvus headcanons? nothing specific, I just love him

Corvus is a fantastic cook, this is canon. In an actual kitchen, he’s just good. If you put him out in the woods with a pot and a pan, he’s incredible. Fresh-caught fish, salt from a rock, breading that he ground from wheat by hand, it’s crazy. This is what he’s used to and it’s where his skills really shine.

When he’s not on the road with General Amaya or staying in the castle, he might actually live in a campsite? A famous hater of the great indoors, he’d take an open sky over a roof any day. He grew up in the forests of Katolis and finds their familiarity comforting.

Corvus has crafted multiple compositions and most of them will never see the light of day. Not because he hates them or is embarrassed, but because he makes them up on the spot on his cello and doesn’t bother writing them down. Only a few have ever made it to paper.

When Soren first got him to try on the armor of the crownguard, Corvus had a very bad time. He wasn’t used to wearing armor and the bulk and weight of it made him feel impeded. Freedom of movement is something he prioritizes in clothes, and while he’s required to have the armor, that doesn’t mean he’ll ever wear it.

Next chapter of @sagegreenfrogs' and I's fic! Chapter 3 features a cooking accident brought on by the man giving Corvus even bigger problems than burning bread.

The cooking lessons had been going along smoothly. Every few times they were having a meal, Soren would show Corvus what he was doing, why and how. The two would experiment with various dishes, and they were both quick learners, so their meals just got better and better. One day, Corvus had offered to cook. Of course, he did want to impress Soren– he wanted to make him happy, really. But Corvus was surprised by just how fond he had grown of this. He loved baking, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise how much he enjoyed cooking. 

Everything was going on just fine; Corvus had all the right ingredients, and the flame of their campfire was stable until Corvus, like a damn idiot, looked over at Soren.

Gods, he was pretty. Corvus couldn’t help but get distracted by how the setting sun grazed Soren’s face, and how the light breeze tousled his loose blond hair. Soren must have seen him staring, because he glanced over at Corvus with an easygoing smile gracing his features.

“Hey, are you almost done- THE OIL IS SPILLING!” Soren’s panicked screech snapped Corvus out of his trance. He looked down, and shit, it was spilling, and all over his hands at that.

They both rushed to try and save the food. Corvus quickly pulled away from the fire, setting the pan down. He didn’t notice, however, at least until it was too late, that some of the hot oil jumped out from the pan, landing on his hand.

“Ow! DAMMIT! ” Corvus yelled out. Some of his fingers were burnt by the oil. 

“Corvus! Holy- dude, please tell me you’re okay?” Soren’s voice was full of concern. He was too kind, as always.

Corvus felt his hand and winced at the pain. “Yeah, I’m mostly fine. Just- ow - Just try to put out the fire before worrying about me.” 

By the time the fire was extinguished, Corvus had sat down and was leaning against a stone.

Soren walked over to him and sat down. Once again, too close, but not close enough. “Hey… man. Are you- is your hand alright? How bad are your burns?”

Being a member of the Crownguard, Corvus had seen the other man treat and deal with many other, far more severe injuries in the past. This was nothing in comparison, Corvus reasoned, but the burns on his hands weren’t the reason for the heat in his cheeks. He had never seen Soren show his much concern for anyone before. It made sense, supposedly. They were… friends, but something felt different here. Could Soren maybe… possibly…?

No. He shook those thoughts away before they could hurt him. He knew not to get his hopes up. Especially about something like this. All that ever seemed to do was hurt him.
