it's been said before, but leverage season two really is a masterclass of writing around a lead actress' pregnancy. they knew they'd have to give her time off for maternity leave, so they set up a character development plot line near the start of the season which was a natural direction for the character to go based on how she'd already been written. then for the first several episodes leading up to her leave, film her from the chest up or show her back, with only some reliance on loose shirts and large jackets. have her character's development/crisis require her to take time off for herself, but write small scenes that can easily be pre-recorded, so she's never actually gone from the show. then let her return.
it's a great combination of understanding the character, being able to plan good plots ahead of the time, and not being so misogynistic that you resent actors for getting pregnant.

once again i am so in love with the way that leverage treats parker. because oh boy, the grave danger job. hardison is buried alive, he's freaking out on the phone, and parker feels like she can't help him, she's not good with emotions in this way, not like sophie, so she says that hardison needs sophie. but sophie knows that what hardison needs is to hear parker's voice, that whatever is going on with those two, parker is the person who will be most reassuring for hardison right now, but she also knows parker won't be convinced by that, and she needs parker to feel confident. so she speaks parker's language. she gives parker a reason for why parker is the best person for this job - not he loves you, not you love him, not even he just needs to hear your voice it doesn't matter what you say, none of that will land with her. sophie says, parker, you've spent more time in air ducts than anyone. if anyone knows how to hold their breath it's you. that's what hardison needs right now. she gives parker a job: help hardison breathe. she doesn't try to push parker, she doesn't make it into some more profound thing that parker might not be ready to hear or able to understand at that moment; she takes stock of the situation and knows (1) hardison needs to hear parker's voice right now and (2) parker needs to feel confident and useful right now and she feeds them the answer, because she loves them exactly how they are. i can't put it into words any better than this but i just love that over and over leverage says "you can be loved and love in return without trying to be different than you are" and never more than with parker.

I love the Leverage episodes where they're truly just psychologically tormenting a guy.
Like obviously they first establish that the guy is a terrible guy who does terrible guy things. And we really do need the terrible guy to be doing a lot of terrible guy things because this is kinda an ethical nightmare, but don't worry, they are reliably doing a lot of terrible guy things.
But then it is just like "hey, let's convince this guy that he's made first contact with aliens and also that aliens are trying to kill him" or "hey, let's make this guy believe he's contracted a deadly disease and is going to die in quarantine because medical staff are abandoning him" or "hey, let's first try to persuade this journalist that the government is secretly creating Guantanamo Bay 2: Underground Boogaloo in your backyards and when she doesn't run with that story, let's then make her think that oops the government accidentally leaked some kind of bioweapon into the waterways and now water is gonna kill you instead."

One of the things I love about Leverage is it would have been so easy to fumble Maggie: make her the tragic woman whose entire character is "lost her son" or make her the uptight straight woman to the team's hijinks, the life that Nate could have had, and escaped.
Instead she feels fully rounded. Yes, she's ostensibly "normal", doesn't understand the world the way the team does, doesn't really understand them and reacts to situations with a faith in authority they don't have. She's arguably far too trusting.
BUT she also happily leaps in to help a con. She's smart and incisive. She has a big heart. But a wicked sense of humour (the whole button cam thing!)
She's not threatened by Sophie and Nate, recognising the romantic part of her and Nate's relationship is over, but happy to build a new relationship with them both. Reminds Sophie that even when Nate calls her his wife, she calls him her ex.
She's deeply, deeply scarred by her loss but it hasn't made her closed off or bitter.
I totally think we should find out she ended up with Sterling, mind.

eliot, giving sophie some self defense training: you need to use the items readily available to you in a fight
sophie: sure, like this?
[grabs a champagne bottle and pops it in such a way that she manages to perfectly aim the cork, as she’s shown to do in the san lorenzo job when she takes out that guy’s eye]
eliot: …….
eliot: what the fuck kind of looney tunes fight situations have you been in????

started my leverage rewatch and never has a pilot episode piloted so hard. it genuinely feels like walking into a room of old friends you haven't seen in about a year. they work alone, they always work alone. parker? she's insane. what're you gonna do when she finds out you live with your mom? age of the geek, baby! twenty pounds of crazy in a five pound bag. boys are on their way. what is it that you do? that's what i do. are we gonna talk about how hard we rocked last night? one show only, no encores. it was kinda cool being on the same side for once. i don't like guns. my money is not in my account that makes me cry inside in my special angry place. eleventy million dollars. that's a computer thing i told her to say that. so this time you really are inside my head. i'm just very good at what i do. somebody kiss this man so i don't have to (🤨). bad guys have money. we work on an alternative revenue stream. we provide... leverage

Sophie grifting: hot duchess. seductive investor. mysterious businesswoman.
Eliot grifting: ridiculously competent chef. hot athlete (any sport). heartthrob country musician.
Hardison grifting: overly-confident criminal. assertive FBI agent. heartthrob classical musician.
Nathan Ford grifting: goddamn piece of shit oily slimy scumbag ambulance-chaser untrustworthy con artist with a stupid fucking voice and a silly hat
the show is not doing Nate any favors in the likeability or attractiveness departments here
(Bonus mention: Parker grifting: autism creature)
