Are there any other interesting tidbits/changes in the Sonic movie novelization?

I’ll be honest, I didn’t read the first book lol I was really only interested in whether the writers had given Tails more of a backstory (which they did… kinda), so that’s why I read the second. However! I did read reviews online that said the first developed Tom & Sonic’s relationship more than in the movie.

Notable mentions in the 2nd book:

•Sonic 2 takes place 8 months after Sonic 1

• Tails spent many months seemingly looking for Sonic… He built those weapons Maddie & Rachel used at the wedding to account for the “natural disasters, dangerous adversaries, and booby traps” he encountered. (I mean!! That’s a whole tv show in itself!!)

• He also built a gun that atomizes things and he’s afraid of it, but he keeps it in his arsenal as a last resort. The text says that he isn’t sure it should be used, which is so interesting to me.

• I think he originally set out to look for the Master Emerald, but the Miles Electric (not what it's called in this universe but that’s what it is) kept picking up its energy across different planets... and somehow he knew that energy belonged to Sonic?

• Earth is the planet the rest of the galaxy is warned about lol

• Knuckles calls Sonic a Child of Mobius. Tails says that's "the traditional home of our kind".

• Tails is looking to find Sonic before “their enemies” do (weird that they have common enemies when they’ve never met?? WHO has Tails pissed off?????? Paramount!! I need to know!!)

• He was ready and willing to prepare Wade's garage for a siege attack (in exchange for stealing the police cruiser and driving it off a cliff). So, again—who has Tails pissed off?

• Instead of "The Master Emerald? That's just a bedtime story!" "Well, he believes it's real," it's "That's just a bedtime story!" "No, it's real. I should know. I think I’m one of the few still looking for it.” (What if one of his ‘enemies’ is Rouge? 👀)

• Tails runs the red light, and Sonic takes the wheel. Meanwhile, Tails climbs in the backseat of the cruiser to build speed boosters mid-chase 'cause Sonic was complaining they were going too slow xD. (This is where the "Promise? Promise you won't go anywhere?" happens :'))

• Tradition among the echidnas was to do an organ swap to make an alliance. Knuckles just breaks Eggman's hand instead, but that's… a part of the lore now. (edit: this is in my Top 5 favorite things from this book. I can imagine someone pitching this idea & the writer’s room going “what the fuck this is a kids movie” lmao)

• Tails offered to help Sonic in Siberia. No "I'm not a field guy!" protests here!

• Short Tails vs Eggman on the mountain (with very Sonic Raised Tails vibes 🥹; the text even says "Tails mocked the villain, almost like Sonic would have")

• Sonic doesn't believe he can fight Eggman and Knuckles alone after the wedding. Tom actually gives him a pep talk.

• Eggman's full name is Ivo Gerald Robotnik (Is that canon in other sonic medias?? I tried looking it up, but I don't see his name like that anywhere, yet I swear I already knew before I read it… *Is his full name canon, I mean. Ivo Gerald Robotnik.)

• Book Sonic reminds me of Modern Sonic more than his movie counterpart sometimes tbh

• There are multiple holograms of Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails at the start of the robot fight instead of just Tails.

• Maddie and Tom literally run through fire to reach Sonic

• Tails names Super Sonic!

• Instead of summoning a chili dog to prove he's not been corrupted by the Emerald, Sonic makes a fart noise with his armpit that has the "decibel of a bomb blast"

• Sonic recreates the Master Emerald, not Knuckles

• "Gotta go fast!" (when Sonic is running across the ocean to meet Eggman and Knuckles at the temple) and "Way past cool!" (post-battle when Tails introduces Knuckles to the power bump)

Gotta count on the freaking Movie Novelization of Sonic 3 for delivering on the aspect of Tom and Maddie being the parents to the trio, most notably Sonic, AND having him call Tom “dad” on multiple occasions and even having Tom refer to Sonic as his son, since we didn’t get them saying that at least once in the actual film,

Still bummed that Maddie isn’t included in that aspect STILL, and no Sonic doesn’t call her mom in the novel either…..

I got back from Sonic 3 awhile back - very good movie, but now I can't stop imagining the Wachowskis having a film night with Shadow and watching The Iron Giant. I wonder what he'd think of it? I hope it'd stir something in him.

I love how “don’t mess with Amy. Seriously, don’t” is such a major running thing in Sonic media these days. Someone get this girl her own game (or a DLC story, available all the way at the end of the year). Also, Espio redeems himself!

i love prime so much, especially with how the different shardverses show how the best characteristics of each character can, at a certain point, drive them to be a worse version of themselves.

Knuckles is a character with great drive and ambition. Like Sonic says in the first run through No Place, Knuckles isn’t one to give up easily, if at all. His drive is unmatched, and once he sets his mind to something, he follows through until the end of the line. In comes: Dread, whose ambition veers into obsession. He became so infatuated with the idea of getting the shard that he loses all sense of loyalty. His drive outweighs his heart.

Amy is driven by compassion. She’s caring to a fault, and would do anything to protect the people and things she loves. So, in Boscage Maze, it makes sense that Thorn is driven to a point of madness by her compassion. When she sees her home, the Jungle, becoming hurt by the ‘scavengers’, she goes completely off the rails. Her compassion for her home turns into an unruly rage that cant see reason. Her heart outweighs her mind.

Tails is, obviously, the smartest member of the group. He’s the mind of the group, and he uses his brain to keep everyone safe. He, like Amy, is driven by heart. But in New Yoke, Nine was never given compassion, and without it, he falls back onto his intelligence. He uses his tools as a weapon against the world that’s hurt him, as a defence. New Yoke turns him into someone cold and unfeeling, until Sonic comes along and begins to change that- but even so, he remains (for the most part) indifferent to the world around him. Nine is an empty version of Tails. His reason outweighs his drive.

No Place is a world with heart but no loyalty. Boscage Maze has loyalty but no reason. New Yoke has reason but no heart.

I wonder if The Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog is designed so that anyone you accuse could be the killer or if there is an actual set person for it.

I just find it somewhat unlikely that between the two I narrowed it down to that my first choice was right and all the evidence pointed to it.

Like, the incident didn’t even fully go how I thought it would because it turns out there’s a third party involved, so half the reasons why I thought the killer got away with it don’t fully apply.

Guess I’ll just post who I thought it was in the notes in case people don’t want to get spoiled and then they can tell me if they chose the same person.

Wait. What?!? The coffee-making, identity-stealing weirdo that followed Robotnik around like a lost puppy had saved their lives?

"Oh yes," Stone said defeatedly as his voice began to fade. "Me and the doctor. Best friends... definitely what we are..." It was almost enough to make you feel bad for the guy, the way you'd feel bad for a lost puppy.

Ugh I explained this to Nat before but that was a vm and now I have to try to put it into text lol. Bear with me. Spoilers for Sonic 3 below...

So like Okay, original game Robotnik has that "machines are better than people and I love them and I hate people" thing going on. And movie universe Jimbotnik does the same thing right. Except his reasons for preferring machines are a little weird? To say the least.

When most people aspire to the perfection of the blessed machine they tend to focus on how machines are perfect because they aren't saddled with those pathetic human emotions, and how they're stronger and smarter and more perfect and all that. And like. There are elements of that with movie Robotnik don't get me wrong, he bullies Sonic for loving his friends, but we all know that's bullshit because his actual personality complex trauma thing stems entirely from being hurt that people don't like him? and nobody's ever genuinely cared about him enough to not betray/leave him, as we learned in movie 3. Daddy issues, et cetera.

The actual first reason he gives for why he prefers his robots, in movie 1, is that they do what they're told and they never need time off to go do stuff other than what they're told. What's worse is that he outright ignores the part about machines that don't line up with what he is. Machines are cold unfeeling things right? And Robotnik is a madman, just complete ditz entirely controlled by his emotions. He's all over the place. So obviously that isn't why he actually likes them. Nor does it seem to be because they're smarter or stronger.

Now all this wouldn't quite have clicked in my head and started forming a pattern, if I hadn't spent half a day getting ahold of reading the movie novelizations lol, they're not good exactly but they aren't bad either (not exactly) and they have this really interesting. Detail. Take. Choice, even, that stood out to me. In the novels we get exactly zero scenes written from Agent Stone's perspective. So he's entirely filtered through Robotnik as we see him. And, like. Robotnik ascribes? Robotic traits to him? That he straight up doesn't have?

This being the most infamous example... But it happens again at least once, which is a lot for the novels cus they're short as hell, where (from Botnik's pov) Stone takes on this more mechanical tone when talking to him or being around him, that he seems to like or prefer/speak positively of. Okay. Weird, homoerotic, but not entirely out of character.

It did make me think though. If Robotnik is kind of loose about why he actually likes machines. But is still adamant that they're good and humans are bad... And what he actually likes about them seems to be that they're... Loyal? I think. And they do what they're told. And they don't need time off to see their families and get laid and leave him alone I'm so sorry then. Well.

Those are traits a human being could very well have. For example, his actual human assistant, who's standing right fucking there as he says it. Right? Stone is still all that, he's loyal and he actually likes + is nice to him and he does what he's told and that's why he actually likes him, as we find out in movie 3, right? So.

What I'm saying is when. In the third movie when he says you were the only person who ever blah blah right. And, like, of course he was. Who would want to be loyal to? This dickhead who mostly wants to achieve world domination? Why would you want to do what a villain says? But Robotnik doesn't care about that, he likes being a villain and above that he's just hurt, right, by it all, and doesn't gaf if his own actions affect others so.

So he ascribes robotic traits to Stone not because they're actually there (Stone is professional when talking to others, but far from emotionless, and it is in fact his emotional connection to the dear doctor that makes him as loyal as he is) but. Rather because in his mind, Stone is on the same level as a robot, because he has the same traits that Robotnik actually. Likes about his robots. That mainly being loyalty, I think.

And, well. In the third movie granpappy Geralt hacks those robots of his and makes them stop obeying him, doesn't he. Not even they were entirely loyal by the end, much like Geralt himself, right?

You can't hack a human being, though.

Anyway. Keep your heads up, okay? I'm like. 99% sure Robotnik is fine (fight me in the comments I guess) and I tend to be good at predicting this stuff so he'll be back one way or another. Jim Carrey officially un-retired, the space station time travel thing is still an active theory, and they can't just fucking kill Eggman guys, come on. Cheers!🥂

Even though I was disappointed with how the Novelization ended up being in the end, I’ll admit that this entire sequence right here? I feel like they did a good job at it.

One detail that they kept introducing was the fact that in this version, Shadow has a more obvious and verbal grudge against Commander Walters rather than the entirety of G.U.N due to him being the one that put him under, and wanting to exact revenge on his ass the entire time, versus it not being mentioned as much until Shadow sees Tom disguised as Walters and attacks him.

That hedgehog is out on a manhunt for sure.

But it comes back later on with that knowledge of Shadow having that vendetta against him, that this whole entire scene where he finds Tom all the most terrifying due to him wanting to straight up obliterating him once he sees him.

Just WHOO, I thought it was anxiety inducing enough in the film but I do like this version too.

Sonic 3 Movie Spoilers

Small difference I noticed between the Latin American dub and the English original

Hi! I had the chance to see Sonic Movie 3 three times! First I saw the movie on a Thursday fan event, got the free poster and everything. Probably the best theatre experience in my life. Then I went on Saturday with my family and now today I was in Mexico for Christmas and I got the chance to hear the movie in Spanish for its premiere in Mexico. My family is absolutely done with me, but it was so worth it.

Anyway I noticed there was a slight change in some of the lines between English and Spanish as it would happen in translating to another language. But the one that stuck out to me was during the scene where Tom got hurt by Shadow and Sonic was by Tom’s side begging for him to wake up. In that scene Sonic called Tom dad.

I think the exact line was “papá despiértate”which means “dad, wake up” and it absolutely broke my heart. I was so shocked because I very clearly remembered Sonic didn’t call Tom dad in the English version. I knew he did in the Sonic Movie 3 novelization, so I was like guess I gotta count on the book, but the Latin American dub also has him clearly say it. I suspect the Spanish translators either got ahold of an older script and kept it in because it could fit in the lip flaps or the dad line was always meant to be there but the English one cut it for some reason and the Latin American dubbers kept it in for the lip flap reason.

Because of that the scene just hit so much harder than the English one and if you can understand Spanish and are a fan of the found family dynamics of the Sonic movies then I suggest you check out the Latin American dub just for this small moment. Luisito Comunica (Sonic’s Latin American VA) did an absolutely amazing job in portraying the emotion Sonic felt. Sonic sounded on the verge of tears.

Off topic but René Garcia did an amazing job as Shadow as well and you can definitely hear Vegetta when he talks but it doesn’t take you out, in fact I think his voice is the standout. Also Cinépolis has a really cool Sonic Movie 3 popcorn bucket so my Mexican Sonic fans head over to the movie theatres!

Commander Walters, the man that you are...(Character analysis with Sonic Movie 3 spoilers)

...something doesn't add up with him. I'm going to go chronologically to analyze his actions.

SEVERE spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 + Shadow's backstory, general spoilers for the Sonic Movie Universe.

So. Captain Walters is 20-ish. He gets a job at a remote research base for GUN. Apparently he's been working with Gerald Robotnik enough that he knows about Maria on sight + defends her living in the base when she shows up. Because it keeps Gerald happy + working. (90% sure the working thing was mentioned in the novelization.)

and if pre-trauma Gerald is like a softer Ivo...was Walters like a more distant Agent Stone? A military companion keeping the Robotnik on a leash + handling the paperwork while the Genius did their thing? ...obligatory old man yaoi implications.

GUN decides to shut down the base with extreme violence. (there were no "lab accidents" or tension justifying a shut down in Shadow's memories...just a quick "we have to go!"

Captain Walters is seen chasing after the intruding GUN officers and trying to stop them hurting both Maria and Shadow, yelling "They're just kids!" and the other GUN officers ignoring him. somehow this doesn't get him fired.

But...if he actually cared about Shadow...why would he seal Shadow in stasis? We have no idea if Gerald was pronounced dead at the raid, but I think he was. It would make sense to put Shadow in stasis because the Robotniks - Maria who befriended him, and Gerald who could study and contain him - were both gone.

Then 50 years pass. Captain Walters gets promoted to Commander Walters. GUN is apparently shelved or put into intense secrecy. Walters gets a high ranking Military position either as a cover or as a liaison with GUN.

Ivo Robotnik grows up an orphan, gets into engineering, shows the same military promise as Gerald did. Ivo becomes "someone who doesn't exist". and wipes a country off the map.

Now we catch up to 2020. Sonic has his emotional outburst EMP. Walters has apparently been keeping an eye on Robotnik's work and recommends him to check it out.

...did Robotnik ever tell anyone Sonic was a hedgehog? Did Walters ever get any updates from Agent Stone about exactly what they were dealing with? because I would love to see the man reacting to a second hedgehog.

Walters shows up at the end of Movie 1 for a quick gag that after all the money that Robotnik spent making his drones. For all the damage they caused all across San Francisco and the world trying to catch Sonic...the Wachowskis get their names cleared + a $50 gift card. Which. is funny and a callback to Olive Garden, and it has the bonus of making the Military look like out of touch jerks. Which. phenomenal. keep it up writers.

With the added context of Movie 3: If Walters was able to catch on that Sonic's EMP was the same energy that they were studying on Shadow...do you think that Walters sent Robotnik to Sonic "just in case" it was another hedgehog like Shadow? and hoped Robotnik could contain the second one and maybe prove he could deal with the first one? that retroactively adds some depth.

Movie 2 has him behind the Hawaiian wedding. Trying to draw Sonic out of Green Hills to capture him. Which didn't even work because the only reason Sonic was there was because Knuckles and Robotnik showed up at his house and put him on the path to the Master Emerald.

...and then in Movie 2 Walters tells the Wachowskis that "GUN was created in response to threats like this" and the implication was that GUN was created in 2020 due to Sonic's EMP blast.

But when we look back, we've got the abandoned GUN base from the 70s, and the HUGE armored London base in Movie 3 in 2024. something like that does not get built in 2-4 years. So Walters basically fudged the truth to people he doesn't trust?

Makes sense. Cops lie. The Military lies all the time.

so he lets Sonic defeat Eggman in the end of Movie 2. And a promise not to mess with them.

so with movie 3, he sends Agent Rockwell with pertinent information. And Walters follows up with the meeting at the Chao Garden restaurant.

Did Walters not know Gerald made the Eclipse Cannon and just... decided to keep the first key out of sentimental value + strategy? Why make the Cannon at all? To get a weapon out of this mess?

...he dies after that but...he leaves a lot behind.

I guess it's chewy how in Movie 1, Commander Walters is a "lawful good?" antagonist, paints him as out of touch and uncooperative then a too little too late. Then Movie 2 he approves a whole honeypot operation to get Sonic caught. And Movie 3 he's a an ally-ish + gets this semi-sympathetic connection to Shadow?

...wonder how the writing room was for him.

You should be watching Pit Babe! - A Brief Review

Saddens me to think how many people are missing out on a great show because they think it’s not worth more than a trash watch, if that.

I mean, realistically, is it the most amazing cinematic work of all time? No, not unless pretty-boy power bottoms with daddy issues are your thing, which in my case they are, so let's talk about Pit Babe!

Note: I've tried to keep the spoilers to a minimum, they're mainly in the tags and links so follow them at your own risk, you've been warned.

Honestly, Pit Babe is a pretty damn good show, especially if you A) pretend the Omegaverse factor doesn’t exist and take the show for what it is and B) you don't mind not knowing what's going on half the time, just sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

Overall, Pit Babe has got a good production value, a slightly absurd yet entertaining plot, a great choice of cast with amazing chemistry and pretty decent acting skills amongst the mix of seasoned actors and newbies.

For a totally biased fair and balanced review: There are some details that are left vague instead of being explained in depth or at all (yet), but that’s to be expected when you adapt a novel into a movie or series. It would get boring for the audience if the pace was interrupted to explain all those little details that we’re likely to find out along the way anyways (shout out to those who've watched the latest episode; finally!).

There are also some scenes that feel like they’re not as necessary and some background/plot devices that made a little more sense in the novel but I personally don’t feel like they detract too much from my viewing experience.

Babe (played by Pavel) and Charlie (played by Pooh) as the main leads do a really good job at shouldering a large percentage of screen time. Charlie comes across as happy-go-lucky, a bit clumsy/goofy, entirely fearless and a little naive, which is mostly true, but there's clearly more to him than that. Right from the start Babe is clearly someone guarded, detirmined and skilled at what he does (racing cars and having sex) and he has a very tight cirlce of people he trusts. There's a winning combo right there, quite tsundere/sunshine from the outside but definitely more breath the surface that gets exploded as they go.

Way (played by Nut) is Babe's best friend and racing companion, they've been racing together at Team X-Hunter for years but there's clearly more than friendship on the mind for Way, though the feelings appear to be one sided.

Alan (played by Sailub) is the owner of Team X-Hunter and an all-round cool Uncle (which the whole team call's him (despite barely being in his mid 30's). He's kind but firm, he cares for his team like they’re his family and it does seem as though they’re his only family.

And the rest of the cast consists primarily of:

Team X-Hunter:

Dean (played by Lee); a junior racer with slight douche vibes

North and Sonic (played by Michael and TopTen); everyone’s babies, they’re junior racers and content creators

Jeff (played by Pon); the newest member of the team, he’s a part time mechanic and full time conspicuous

Pete (played by Ping); the money guy Alan brings on board to sponsor the team

Team Red Racing (the rival team):

Winner (played by Pop); the guy who never seems to win against Babe

Kim (played by Benz); the new racer they hired to beat Babe

Tony (played by S Vorarit); Red Racing's newest benefactor and *shock horror* Babe's former foster father (try saying that ten times fast)

Kenta (played by Garfield); Tony's right hand man

Then, there’s the 🌶🔥🤯

I, personally, enjoy a little spice/heat in my shows. It’s not necessary for every show, of course, but I do think that when it serves a purpose to the story and it’s done well then it can be quite enjoyable and this cast/production team is doing it really well.

As I said, the chemistry between the cast really is amazing (both on and off the screen, if you're interested in that kind of thing) and although the spicy scenes aren’t nearly as abundant as they are in the novel, there are some really good ones. I decided to bite the bullet and binge read the novel over the past couple of weeks, I blame @pharawee’s breakdown posts for those sleepless nights, and it was worth it for me but not necessary for watching the series.

Lastly (as if this post isn't long winded enough as it is) there are a handful of things in this series that we don't see too often in BL's and make it worth watching even more:

It's got race cars, murder attempts, mafia influence and supernatural powers (at least half the characters have one).

There's no evil ex-lover out to get revenge or get back together with one of the mains (thank the BL gods).

It's got a Soft Top/Dominant Bottom dynamic where the title character is both super masc and a pretty princess.

And we can't forget, it is technically an Omegaverse series (or rather, it's Omegaverse-lite) which none of us saw coming!

Anywho, to conclude; yes, you should be watching Pit Babe. No, you don't have to read the novel to understand what's going on because none of us understand what the hell is going on at any given time. Charlie and Babe are fucking around and finding out, the rest of us are just long for the ride, Alan and Jeff are having a whole ass rom-com-drama in the corner, the babies are making their content and having a blast and the others aren't quite on the map yet (or are they? *wink, wink*), but I sure hope they will be soon!
