I incorporated smaus into my fics before. I adore writing or reading a good crack fic/post so I definitely think they have their place too and they are funny! I just personally struggle when it comes to writing shorter content so not something in my wheelhouse to do. (lol anything i write under 1k words i automatically think is dogshit. lol someone teach me to write short stuff i beg.)

Also I be EATING UP those twt porn links!! I don't post any of my own as my twitter is a stan account and I don't follow/like/retwt porn on there cause I don't want to mess up my algorithm. But I do be bookmarking them HEAVY! They are good reference material for my smut fics tbh.

Also I try to stay out of the mess/discourse cause I feel like people should be able to enjoy what they like without writing lame dissertations in defense/debating about it. But since we are on the topic already I'll add I haven't really understood the hate for them in particular, especially those saying people who like/post them have porn addictions because what!? Like we are not all on here to write/read smut?? pot---meet--->kettle. Anyway I guess I can understand the frustration some have when they assume they are stealing attention away from fics, but idk tumblr is huge and there is a place/audience for everyone is my belief. I've seen many long 6k+ fics breaking 20k+ so I think theres interest in long fics as well (one of my 7k+ fic has 18k+ notes). But I work in marketing, am getting my MBA right now and have worked in the middle of business and creative my entire career (at one point i worked for Twitch directly with streamers/influencers) so I can say when it comes to anything content/creative driven its honestly it's less about the quality of the individual work and more about regularly finding, interacting and catering to your audience if you really care about notes that much . I think its far more important though to do it for fun. Especially since we are not getting paid and doing this for free-99! So much creativity gets stifled when its too much about the business/results/notes side and you are working to please others/for clout. Thats a whole ass job in itself lmfao! I used to write on ff.net back in the day (years ago omfg) and stressed myself out so much from all the reviews/requests that I ended up abandoning it and was scared to write fanfics for years because of the anxiety of 'letting ppl down' until I got back into it last fall and decided to stop giving a fuck LOL.

Ahhh but I could ramble on about that for hours so let me stop I'm doing what I said I didn't want to do cause this is def now a mini dissertation from me going down the rabbit hole on this LMFAO! (im long-winded af lol)

Honestly i dont care that much about that. One thing I've understood since i first was on the internet was that it will be there forever if u post something. In some way, it'll exist and not be that hard for someone to find, if they go looking.

That's why I'm careful about not mixing my personal life on here that much. I know ppl may download my posts and stuff. I don't want anyone to connect me to this stuff irl. Reddit refugees, heres some things about tumblr

1. You can snooze tumblr live for 7 days. Go to settings -> account settings-> dashboard preferences -> then toggle the 'snooze tumblr love's

2. No one cares if you reblog old posts. Its quite common (and really fun) to pass around old posts.

3. There are ways to fliter out tags that you dont want to see. Have a mutual that you love, but they fell into a fandom that you get tired of seeing? See a ship that squicks you out? No problem!

Go to Setting-> account settings-> Content you see, there you'll be able to fliter out tags.

4. While were on the subject, tag your posts. But be mindful of how you tag.

-If its an anti-post about a character/ fandom DONT tag it about that thing, thats considered bad form. (Some people will also censor the ship name like r*ylo just to be safe- though if you dont it should be okay.)

-if you have anything in the post thats triggering tag it. Flashing lights, blood/ gore/ SA. ect.

5. If you're making a long post you can hide it (like I did) with :readmore:

6. You can have your like page available, but reblogs are the only thing that will appear on ppls dashes. Likes are just a bookmark. If we want to keep tumblr alive we must reblog

7. The difference between talking in reblogs, tags, and replys.

-reblogs: you're shouting to the void. This is the most visible way.

-replies: mostly if you want to talk to OP. Other ppl may join in the convo

-tags: youre talking to your mutuals. Someone might live your tags so much that they put it in the replies, but for the most part it gets ignored.

Ash/Goh: I really love emotional hurt/comfort stuff, hence my nightmares prompt haha. I don't know as much as I should about previous seasons, so I never quite get references to them.. I just really love how much they care about and support each other!!

Selene/Lillie: they're soooo sweet omgomgomgomgomg My favourite thing about moonlillie is the like,, knight and princess dynamic they've got going on, but also like, how selene inspires lillie to save herself! I really love Nihilego and Lillie interacting as a concept and the idea of Lillie forgiving Nihilego and realizing it wasn't the pokemon's fault what her mom did, espcailly in a moonlillie context. Moonlillie stuff that touches on Lillie healing from Lusamine is the best, espcailly stuff that doesn't try and redeem Lusamine after what she's done.

Burnet: burnet... pretty.... okay but really, I love burnet as a character, she's got such a fun and bright personality, I love how much she's just,, passionate about her work and her husband, how gentle she is with her kid/surrogate kids. I also just love like,, dreams in general, so her being a dream researcher is so cool to me!!

Fun facts: for the record, the 'not cussing' thing in my dislikes list isn't about me like,, having a Thing against cussing, i swear, I just always find it reminds me of stupid memes (Palkia you son of a bitch!) and then I laugh even when it's supposed to be serious sdfjklds.

but to answer your questions, ill do it in 2 parts: one for fic recs and the other for fic promos.

theres a couple different ways i look for fics, and im sure both of these are the most common, but the first is using ao3's filter system. i can pare down any particular thing im looking for in a fic with the filter system ao3 runs on, and the tag wranglers (bless them) have made sure that even the vaguely worded tags end up where they need to be under the larger umbrella tag its associated with. you can also peruse the bookmarks of authors on ao3 in their profile and filter those fics down to specific fandoms or pairings or even timeframes it was written!

the second is a combination of using friends recommendations- publically or in private servers- and fic recs on tumblr, usually thru the ship tag (if im following the tag, and if the author chose to promote their fic on tumblr, or a fic rec blog promotes it as some fandoms do)

it also depends on how large the fandom is when you come into it, and what specifically you are looking for, but if you have friends in that fandom who keep bookmarks of their fav fics or know of ones youd enjoy, id recommend going to them if the tag system isnt providing quite what you're after, as id trust a friend over anything else (word of mouth literally is the best promo)

there are also sometimes fic rec blogs, who's entire modus operandi is promoting works at large, so following a few of those (if there are any) can help bring new content to your door as well

as for promoting your own work, you really kind of have the world before you. make a link post on tumblr with a similar tagline to the summary and tag it accordingly. share the link in discord with friends or in fandom spaces. share the link on twitter and tag it so it gets seen. ao3 is not a social media website, so as long as you are the most recent post in the tag, youll always be at the top. theres no algorithms there like there are on other socmed platforms, so really the choice is up to you how and where you want to promote it! reblog the link as many times as you want! its up to you!

and youre not entirely wrong that discussion of fanworks doesn't take place on tumblr anymore, but it really depends on the fandom youre in. i follow several authors and fic rec blogs for one fandom who do regular fic promos of other writers works and gush about them, but in the way that youll see a blurb in the jacket cover of a book. its really just to keep the content coming back to the top here, and helps bring to the surface fics that didnt get a lot of readers in the first run, perhaps bc its an older work or a lesser known pairing.

discussion about fandom works themselves has turned private namely for the sake of reducing drama and hurt feelings in public spaces, and i dont blame them. ive been in ficbook clubs on private servers that were some of the best times ive ever had bc we were allowed to talk freely about an authors work without airing our opinions out for all the world to see, and frankly i much prefer that style of discussion over public ones, but thats me and i cant speak for everyone.

theres also just been a steady shift away from author engagement on socmed bc of how easy it is for them to get hit by negativity there. the culture just isnt the same as it used to be for fic writers as it was in the last decade. hell, in the last year alone, youd be hard pressed to find an author who hasnt experienced some kind of harassment over the course of their career on socmed, if we're being honest. my honest advice to you is: if youre following an author you like, and u want to know more about how they use their creative process, ask them! they may not all answer these days, but it doesnt hurt to try! just be polite, thats all anyone can hope for.

You write these gorgeous atmospheres and descriptive, visceral feelings, and if you chose to use it for evil…. You could get evil shit done. You’re SO powerful. So I want to read it… but also…. I don’t. I’d love to see you write ABO like you mentioned a while back or just see you explore a cutesy soulmate AU or something. I think you’d be really good at writing an AU where you hear what the other person’s listening too. I feel like you’d be so good at making me feel something for someone who was in another city. (think this would be cute with Tsukki cos he’s headphones boy, OR terushima because I like the dynamic of someone flirty, who clearly cares about looks, falling for someone he can’t see) ANYWAY….

hey, could any fellow glasses wearing ppl help me out? my glasses that i've been using for the past like 7 years broke yesterday; they were a free pair from the last time i went to an eye dr's and were only supposed to be temporary while i found a different style i liked better but that never ended up happening and i used the free pair the whole time, i really do not like the way they feel or look at all so i don't even want to bother trying to repair them, but i'm very near-sighted and autistic and have sensory processing disorder so even one day without glasses has been very disorienting and stressful for me. my prescription is a bit outdated because like i said i havent been to an eye drs in years, but im high risk for catching covid and dont feel comfortable doing pretty much anything outside of my house until i'm able to be vaccinated because i've spent the past year being extremely cautious and staying in my house in hopes that i dont get sick

anyways, long story short, im pretty sure i still have the paper slip with the information about my prescription somewhere and i'm not going to be able to deal with the disorientation of not seeing the world clearly for much longer so i really need to get some new glasses while i wait for it to be safe for me to get an updated prescription. my question is this: does anyone have any reccommendations of good/trustworthy websites where i can buy some new glasses for affordable prices with my prescription? i'd need to be able to get those anti-glare type lenses too because regular eye glasses without it aren't accessible for me with my sensory issues. i've seen people talk about good sites to get glasses from that are way cheaper than like lenscrafters or places like that but i never remembered to bookmark any sites so idk where to look 😔 ideally i'd love to get a pair that i actually like (i hate modern glasses frame styles and would be much happier with styles that have like 40's-90's aesthetics to them or 'novelty' styles that are purposely bright and tacky and colorful like heart shaped glasses lol) but i really just need to get a new pair ASAP because i'm not going to be able to do anything if i continue being unable to see properly like this

hes pretty good at it! not his love language at all, but hes good at it! he’s very practical in his approach to gift giving. things that can be used. like bookmarks or coffee mugs or something that can be worn often. like a tie or gloves. virote would rather not give gifts, if theres an option for anything else. like acts of service is where he shines. quality time, too.

ill say this: if virote is in love with you, he’ll give you a copy of one of his favorite books. it’s usually a work by banana yoshimoto.

and on the flip side, virote does not like receiving gifts unless it’s made by hand and serves some practical use. or, if its pretty art he can stare at. he has all the money in the world..... there is literally no one that can buy him anything lol.

You can remove your work from a collection at literally any time, like op said, and even if you have your acceptance settings set to auto-accept, that does Not Apply if someone is trying to add your work to a hidden collection. Yes, they can change it after the fact but again you can Remove It from that collection and retain total control.

There's no reason to terrify authors about this. Yes, someone may be able to set their collection to hidden while it contains your fic and it can therefore hide your fic too, but this incredibly easy to fix.

Use the damn collections option if you want. It is meant for you personally and it doesn't hurt Anything to have collections with funny names that only make sense to you. If an author doesnt want a collection with that title attsched to their fic, they can just Deny the request to add it.

If authors dont want their stuff in collections, yes change your settings, it's as simple as that. Collections are much more intuitive for some people to use than a collection of bookmarks of works. Having a collection called 'stuff i read when im sad' tells you everything you need to know about the works that'll go in there. There's no reason for someone to think they need to put bookmarks in it instead of the fics themselves.

This is an incredibly old concept that's been used to stir up fear/anxiety for authors for Ages. I saw posts exactly like this literal years ago, and it has Never been as big a deal as people make it out to be.

You do not lose control of your work when you let it get added to collections. No one can take it away from you or hide it from the world without your permission permanently. It does not ruin the search engine or make ppl hate your fic if it's in a collection with a weird name.

Your fic is safe. Just be aware of your settings and preferences with the feature, and don't worry too much.

AO3 Collections Advice

just a gentle reminder to say that i do not, and will never, accept unsolicited invitations to add my fics to collections on ao3. doing so gives the owner of the collection power over my work - they can then make the work anonymous without my consent, or even hide it from view entirely on ao3. whilst i can undo this by removing the work from the collection, i prefer not to take the risk of this happening and me not noticing and ending up with a missing/uncredited fic

readers: using collections as a “i’ve read this and i liked it” list is a poor use of the many, many features ao3 gives you to save and rec stuff. what you are looking for instead is ao3′s bookmarks feature! you can make a bookmark of a work (they even have specific bookmark types for recs!), and then add that bookmark to a collection without any of the issues i mentioned above (i.e. if you make the collection anonymous/hidden, it won’t affect the bookmarked work). you don’t even need author permission to do add a bookmark to a collection! and probably the authors will be delighted because, hey, more exposure without any risk of to work. using collections this way is a good use of collections, especially if you label them clearly (e.g. “the best of dsmp h/c fic”, rather than “ouoguguh hurty”), and is of huge benefit to the fandom community at large because it helps people find recs!

also, even if you’re going to ignore everything else i’ve said here, you should absolutely not be trying to add author’s works to collections titled “okay fics” or “fics that are a solid 5/10″. i will get an email telling me you are trying to do this, letting me know exactly what you think of my work just the same as if you’d left a rude comment. if you do this with an author who is on auto-accept, every other person who reads that fic will see that collection title just below the fic’s tags. if you want to remind yourself to avoid a fic, use a private bookmark; you can tag that with whatever you want because it’s between you and god. just don’t be a dick in public, please.

even with collections that don’t have derogatory titles, this is still worth thinking about; do authors really want “subtext is buttsex spelled differently!” in all caps or “uwu squirm worm” on their work? probably not. i get emails trying to invite me to collections like this maybe once a week, and it is phenomenally annoying (though, self-admittedly, i’m a grumpy old bastard). more importantly, it also makes your collections functionally useless to anyone other than yourself - no one is searching for “worm” or “buttsex” when they are trying to find collections of good fics. a clearly-titled collection that gives you a good idea of what’s in it, whilst less funny to you personally, turns it from a personal list into a community resource!

other authors: you, also, should probably not be allowing random people to add your works to collections. by default, people should have to request permission to; (if you’ve changed that to auto-accept, you can change it back by doing the opposite of the instructions here), and i would strongly suggest rejecting unsolicited requests. anyone who’s not e.g. the the trusted admin of an event/challenge/etc. who is running a collection for those purposes should not have control over your work’s visibility.
