Just a little bit of 'insider info' (and by 'insider' I mean I was a part of the beta testing crew a few years ago) Webtoons has been messing with AI tools for years. You can literally play test that very same AI tool that I beta-tested here:

Mind you, this is just an AI Painter, similar to the Clip Studio Colorize tool, but it goes to show where WT's priorities are headed. I should mention, btw, that this tool is incredibly useless for anyone not creating a Korean-style webtoon, like you can deadass tell it was trained exclusively on the imports because it can't handle any skin tone outside of white (trying to use darker colors just translates as "shadows" to the program, meaning it'll just cast some fugly ass shadows over a white-toned character no matter how hard you try) and you just know the AI wouldn't know what to do with itself if you gave it an art style that didn't exactly match with the provided samples lmao

And let's be real, can we really expect the company that regularly exploits, underpays, and overworks its creators to give a damn about the ethical concerns of AI? They're gonna take the path of least resistance to make the most money possible.

So the fact that we're now seeing AI comics popping up on Webtoons left and right - and now, an actual "Webtoon AI" branding label - should come as zero shock to anyone. Webtoons is about quantity over quality and so AI is the natural progression of that.

So yeah, if you were looking for any sign to check out other platforms outside of Webtoons, this is it. Here are some of my own recommendations:

ComicFury - Independently run, zero ads, zero subscription costs (though I def recommend supporting them on Patreon if you're able), full control over site appearance, optional hosting for only the cost of the domain name, and best of all, strictly anti-AI. Not allowed, not even with proper labelling or disclosure. Full offense to the tech bro hacks, eat shit.

GlobalComix - Very polished hosting site that offers loads of monetization tools for creators without any exclusive contracts or subscriptions needed. They do offer a subscription program, but that's purely for reading the comics on the site that are exclusively behind paywalls. Not strictly anti-AI but does require in their ToS that AI comics be properly labelled and disclosed, whether they're made partially or fully with AI, to ensure transparency for readers who want to avoid AI comics.

Neocities - If you want to create your own site the good ole' fashioned way (i.e. HTML / CSS) this is the place. Independently run, offers a subscription plan for people who want more storage and bandwidth but it only costs $5/month so it's very inexpensive, and even without that subscription cost you won't have to deal with ads or corporate management bullshit.

Be safe out there pals, don't be afraid to set out into the unknown if it means protecting your work and keeping your control as a creator. Know your rights, know your power.

NAME LORE! Specifically the District 2 naming that I’ve already created, but have expanded upon. Keep in mind, this District 2 name system is exclusive to those in the masonry related trade, not Peacekeepers. It’s called a “Home Name,” a name given to you by the various and small masonry communities of the District. Originally it wasn’t a thing since most of those in the district already had names related to the trade, but with the heavy influence of the Capitol and adopting Capitol sounding names, most having Greco-Roman influences, the people of District 2 continued to sustain the Capitol’s favor. It wasn’t until after the war with the influx of Peacekeepers and District 2 becoming the military center of Panem that masonry families and their children felt the shift in their naming heritage in relation to their trade. Thus the creation and at first underground program of a “Home Name” was born. Children born in District 2 would continue to be incentivized to have Capitol or warrior like names, but those would not be the ones used in home. On official documentation, like on a reaping slip or on the roster in the training academy, they would have their actual names (called a Slip Name referencing the reaping slip). The process of creating a Home Name is long and arduous, taking up to two to three years to finalize a handful of names and ultimately choosing one that both fits the babe and reflects their trade. Names can be repeated, names can be changed, Capitol-like first names can be axed all together once they’re past reaping age or not a Peacekeeper in a 20 year contract, but as long as they still hold onto to their trade and call it, there’s no problem at all. As this tradition is not set in stone, various families have their own rules to when and if their children can change their Home Name, with some being as lax as letting them change it whenever the child pleases, to after reaping age, to not at all. If you marry into a masonry family and have no Home Name of your own, you have weeks with your future in-laws to not only get to know each other, but so they can have an outside perspective on deciding the new Home Name. Your partner who knows you best will present the final handful of names, their meaning and bring any tools or stones that align with that name if there are any, and once that name is decided, you’re sprinkled with marble dust on your forehead from a patch of rubble and are called that until your last day, intermixing your old name if you so wish (I showed this to a friend of mine & she said that the sprinkling dust on the forehead gave her christianity vibe. I can't out-run my religious trauma even if I tried). Children also go through the same process, and the case of the Sophro children (OCs) are no exception. The three of them spent the first two or three years of their lives in District 2 to give them a proper Home Name that truly reflected the District and themselves. They take great pride in their Home Name and use it the second they leave the Capitol. Most of the children of 2 that they grew up with didn’t even realize that they’re Capitol until much later and recognized them on TV, using their Slip Names. And yes, there is an assignment done in school in 2 where those who have Home Names pair up with those who don’t, spend the week at their home in the masonry sector where the families there can get to know them and finalize a name. At the end of the week they are given a Home Name by that partner and can use it when they are in the stone working section of the district. I think Enobaria totally has a Home Name (Caliper?). Brutus is for sure the kind to have to follow a masonry kid around for a week.

Thinking more about the Shadow!Cilan AU, specifically about the animosity between the Triplets and N, Anthea and Concordia.

All six of them were basically Ghetsis' adopted children, but he set them up to hate each other from the start just based on how he intended to use them - the girls were basically just meant to be N's caretakers, and N himself was a disposable puppet, but the Shadow Triad were meant to be his little minions/bodyguards. And since I'm in camp 'Ghetsis was planning on offing N eventually' I imagine he wouldn't want the triplets possibly jumping ship, so he'd set them against each other from the start - being harder on the Triad, strategically lovebombing N in front of them while withholding any affection from them accept to string them along (which he did to N too, of course, but they wouldn't know that), being softer on N and the girls (because their roles were symbolic, and because he didn't want to ruin N's innocence and therefore his purpose) in front of them while they're constantly pushed to their limit (training in stealth, in making their own tools, in Pokemon training, in a lot of things, constantly putting them under pressure) despite him being older than them, the constant feeling of N being his 'real' son so of course he's the important one here, not them.

All the while N and the girls are having the Triad used as an example of how being a Pokemon trainer makes you callous and cruel, and the end result of the blatant favoritism makes the triplets antagonistic towards N (at least for a while) shattering any sort of trust they could and should have built up as basically foster siblings.

I can imagine after the schism between N and Plasma, the triplets had some complicated feelings - both anger at him either for the 'betrayl' despite being raised 'pampered and spoiled', or, if we're going by what happened in the anime, that everything Ghetsis did for him was for nothing and how he was a failure in the end. But also maybe preening, because they were the ones who stayed loyal, they were the ones who didn't fail. N was spoiled, in their eyes and that's why he couldn't cut it- why he either left, or failed and then ran away because he simply couldn't accept one failure so he blamed Ghetsis instead. N and the girls were spoiled rotten, but the pressure put on them made them diamonds.

N, Anthea, and Concordia, after the schism, might recognize, vaguely, how messed up their childhood was, but they know so little about what the triplets went through - with N sequestered in his room and not allowed to interact with others, and most of his interactions with the Triad would have been negative, and Anthea and Concordia's whole lives were made to be about N, almost exclusively - that they don't know how to fix it. What's their deal? They sort of respected them before, when they seemed to grow out of their bullying behavior but they were all on the same side, but after the schism they because vicious towards them. Brutes blindly following after the footsteps of an evil man who sees them as tools, when they should be smart enough to see that.

Not for nothing, but the reason people are getting on your case about the AI art thing is because you were literally the one who started it. Someone made a post about how anyone can make art, and you responded by insulting that person, calling them an asshole, and accusing them of ableism. I've checked their blog, and you continued to argue with and insult this person until they finally blocked you, which I don't blame them for. If people aren't listening to you, or are upset with you, it's because you attacked someone else first. You're perfectly capable of discussing your thoughts without being a dick– someone sent you an ask in which they were far nicer to you than you've been to anyone else, and you treated them in kind. Ironically, this was after thanking them for their politeness and good faith, something you have not been affording most other people.

I'll be frank– I do not understand how AI works, nor do I think I ever will. That is not my area of expertise. But I have a wealth of experience in being human and wanting to create things that are beyond my abilities. You seem to think that this is something that only disabled folks experience, but wanting to make something and being physically unable to do so is, in fact, something every artist experiences. It is the feeling that drives people to create art in the first place. Art is a lot of things, but at its center, it is having a thought inside of you that you would like to make physical. This is fundamentally impossible. I will never draw anything as good as the image in my head, I will never sing anything as good as the song I imagine, and I will never take a picture that matches my experience of the world. Those imperfections are what makes our art ours, and when we say anyone can make art, that is exactly what we mean. A child making a crayon drawing is an artist. A tone-deaf person singing a made-up, off-key song is an artist. Art is not about the quality of the finished product, it is about the process of creating.

That having been said, from what I can tell, you genuinely view AI as a tool. You're not entirely wrong. AI is something built by humans, and if someone builds their own neural network, trains it themselves, and provides it with images from consenting sources, there is nothing wrong with using it. Nor would there be anything wrong with using an AI someone else developed provided, again, that the images it's trained on come from consenting sources. You said at one point that when it comes to art theft, "the ones making AI are the culprits here, not the AI itself, nor its users." That is, to put it mildly, bullshit. If someone robs an art museum, cuts up the Mona Lisa, and hands me the pieces and some glue, I agree that the glue is not responsible if I then decide to reassemble it into something new. But the robbers and I would definitely be at fault. By choosing to use an AI that has been trained on stolen art, you are explicitly saying that you, the user, are okay with the theft.

Which you may well be, considering you keep conflating art theft with the legal term intellectual property. No one who is upset about art theft gives a shit about whether or not it's legal to do. Plenty of things are legal and awful. What people are upset about is when people take something that someone else has worked very hard on and use it without permission. This is not exclusive to AI– people have been angry for years about art tracing, after all, or simply taking someone else's picture and claiming it is your own, which is what the term art theft used to be most often used to mean. People are not upset about AI using stolen art because they think it is illegal; they are upset because the people who made that art did not consent to it being used. Speaking personally, I would love to see someone train an AI using my art. It would be very interesting to me to see what it could make. But at the very least, I would want them to ask for my permission first. Consent is, as always, key.

TLDR, people are being assholes to you because you were an asshole to someone else first, and AI may be a tool but the way that tool is currently being used is shitty and that's why people are upset. Maybe stop insisting other people are ableist for not liking the current usage of AI and accept that what they're upset about is the non-consensual use of other people's art.

You're right, I was the one who fired the first shot. I've been aware of this for a while now, and I regret my initial hostility. I honestly don't blame anyone for being combative in their responses. That's why I go out of my way to thank people for especially tactful ones; they don't necessarily owe it to me. On the other hand, however, I can't meaningfully respond to those which haven't meaningfully responded to me. I can't help but be disappointed by how few people have made an effort to actually convince me of anything.

You are also right about the nature of art. However, I speak from experience in saying that "wanting to make something and being physically unable to do so" often means something different for disabled people. Due to my ADHD, I struggle with executive dysfunction. I have a severe disadvantage at bringing myself to work on my art in the first place. It's not a matter of imperfections, it's a matter of even getting started. It's not about the quality of the finished product, it's about creating a finished product at all. I am simply not able to make art as easily as most people. Neither are countless other disabled people. This is why I took issue with the original post that said everyone can make art.

I don't like to use the term "art theft" loosely. Its primary meaning refers to literal theft, be it of a physical artwork, or of the tangible medium of a digital one. Such a specific term for it exists because art is important enough to us that we consider crimes against art to be worth identifying. In the era of digital art, though, it has taken on a secondary meaning, which roughly refers to plagiarism. Between our cultural emphasis on individualism in authorship, and the common tendency to mistake intellectual property for an ethical framework (which was my whole point in bringing up IP in prior posts), this newer definition actually reaches far further than just plagiarism, and even encompasses some things which are perfectly ethical in actuality.

Consider the fact that inspiration is inseparable from creativity. Even the most original works of all time are shaped by the artist's lived experiences—after all, our lived experiences are what literally rewire our brains and inform our every decision. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone who thinks creative inspiration is immoral. On the other hand, there is an overwhelming consensus that plagiarism is immoral. Both of these, at their core, consist of producing something by drawing upon existing works. The only inherent difference between them is how transformative the process is. AI training is one of the most transformative processes there are—data is transformed into behavior, and each pixel in the resulting outputs is determined by using the sum total of everything that was learned in the process, not merely copied from a random work. AI is nothing like gluing together cut-up pieces of the stolen Mona Lisa. In reality, it's no different from how we humans take inspiration from existing things to create something new. That's not personification—generative AI is an emulation of the structures and functions underlying brains and nerves, albeit an imperfect and simplistic one. To say that AI can't be trained on publicly accessible art without express permission is to say that people can't be inspired by others' work without express permission. Of course, there's nothing wrong with taking measures to prevent or deter AI companies from using your art. If that's what you want, be it personal preference or because of a problem with the companies and their practices, then go for it! There's plenty to take issue with in regards to the companies themselves, which is what I was talking about when I called them "the culprits."

So recently, Rengor told me about this FE8 fan hack that I decided to give a try, and it was WELL worth it.

Made by Scraiza, Souls of the Forest is a fan hack of Sacred Stones that tells a completely new story with all new maps of its own. It’s still under development, but it’s in a very good place as of the time of this writing, with one of its two planned story routes completed.

So fun features?

It’s got a bow lord (they’ll have customizable features in a later version, but as of the time of this writing Beryl can only be youthful guy), while your Jagen is the troubled Valkyrie Rakel.

The game gets unabashedly busted, with items both early and great having seriously high power behind them. Foot units especially tend to make out like bandits to compensate for their lower move and lack of access to Canto.

Though that’s not to say the mounted units are completely screwed, because they have the Tellius version of Canto.

There’s also holdable items that grant hefty stat boosts for being held, and staffs that boost the damage or durability of the units they’re used on. You also pick up multiple Hammerne (though they can only be used on weapons in this hack) and Warp staffs for extra fun.

Let that sink in. You get two mounted staffer dancers, and a unit with Xane’s gimmick!

Rest assured, the gameplay is balanced around these features and you’ll have to use all the tools in your arsenal to come out on top. You’ll just have a lot of fun doing it with crazy numbers in the meanwhile.

Effective weapons and the weapon triangle play a larger role, and as such, both have upgraded versions, as do Brave weapons. There’s even weapons that exist to impart stat bonuses to the holder if they have S rank in the given weapon type.

Speaking on the Weapon Triangle, it’s made stronger in this hack, modifying damage by +-4 and hit rate by +-15%. Reaver weapons double this modifier, and Reaver vs Reaver combat doubles it again. Since effective damage in the GBA games scale with being at triangle advantage or disadvantage, using a Reaver weapon to place an effective weapon at disadvantage will harshly reduce the damage dealt. Then you get Reversal weapons, which reverse the triangle and have double the impact on it that Reavers do.

There’s also other smaller quality of life mechanics, such as a warning indicator for effective or killer weapons in enemy possession, an indicator for when thieves will open chests or brigands will sack villages, an indicator for when enemies will drop items, and an indicator when enemies have an item to steal. Vulneraries and Elixirs are always dropped, so steals are almost exclusively master seals or stat boosters.

Although there’s a LOT of units in the game, Scraiza did an excellent job of giving them fascinating stat lines. For example there’s Troy here who joins as a Brigand with capped Power, Speed, and Luck, and high growths in the first two stats and high hp, but with basically zilch in either bases or growths for Skill, Def, or Res. Then there’s Emma, the tank thief, or Tero with his shitty bases but ability to endless promote while also having high stat caps and the ability to use weapons and items locked to armor units, or Nuar with her 0 across the board bases but access to unique prf status staves (the only ones in the game in fact!) and growths that hover around 200% in each stat.

And you’d do well to train a pretty good selection of units, because the final few maps have some very high deploy caps!

The hack has three levels of difficulty (it’s balanced around the highest, Lunatic) and has built-in customization options for Reverse mode, Anti-Reverse mode, Fixed growths (meaning no RNG upon level up), 0% growths, and several more options.

The game very much follows the design principles of New Mystery of the Emblem’s highest difficulty, meaning difficulty is more geared toward enemies being placed with devilish precision and not by simply throwing a lot of them at the map or giving them huge stats.

DS-era save points also dot nearly every map. (You can see one in the first screenshot I posted). Also returning from the DS era are generic replacements for your units if too many of them die that you can’t fill your deployment slots.

Though the story and writing are not the focus of the mod, the story is reasonably engrossing anyways, and tells the tale of the soldiers of the Treuran Empire as they try to bring peace and security to a brutal, hard land.

The characters are all very well-written, the villains included. Supports are not yet completed, but work on the hack is ongoing and Scraiza promises to have them in a future version. There’ll also be an alternate story route in future versions of the game.

In terms of representation, no classes are gender-locked. You can have male Pegasus Knights and Troubadours or female Fighters and Pirates. Female generic enemies are also frequently present, as are female bosses and major villains.

Some characters are explicitly LGBT+, and there’s even a weapon that can only be used by gender nonconforming characters. Genderlocked weapons do exist, but with a twist in that some women can use the supposedly male-only Mars tome (such as Aenny who finds the idea of throwing fireballs cool enough to call herself a tomboy) and some men can use the apparently female-only Ladyblade (like Steel who’s so insanely dedicated to the blade that he’ll become whatever the sword he’s holding requires). But the real fun behind them is they’re locked to the UNIT, not to the CLASS, so you can give a swordsman the Mars tome to let them hit at range, or an archer girl the Ladyblade to let her defend herself up close.

So yeah, all in all, Souls of the Forest is a delightfully (in many ways absurdly) fun fan hack and well worth giving a ghost! It can be found here:

I don’t know if this is a silly question or not, but I saw you mention how the creator of “there are no demons” uses a 3D sculpts to make their comic. Do you use a 3D software? I have never even considered it before now, but now I’m wondering if it would help me keep consistency with different characters body types

I actually do, not so much software (I'm not a 3D modeller at all lol) but 3D assets! There are a few sprinkled throughout Rekindled, mostly involving background props and set designs (though in a lot of cases my assistant @banshriek will often just use them as references to paint over rather than use them directly if they feel it looks better, much of the backgrounds in the comic since Ep 23 can be attributed to them <3).

I don't use 3D models for my character art, not so much because I'm against it, just because I've used them in the past and while I found they helped with certain things I often struggle with like perspective and proportions, they've also started to hinder my creativity because of how stiff they can be (and tbh it made the drawing process really boring for me because I was literally spending more time adjusting poses than I was actually drawing!) I'm finding I'm perfectly capable of drawing anatomy on my own now, using 3D models for a while helped me get there but now they're more limiting than they are helpful due to my outgrowing them (kind of like training wheels on a bike, like yeah they're helpful so you can learn how to ride a bike, but you won't get to go as fast or have as much freedom of movement as you would if you learned how to ride a two wheeler). I think they're great for referencing or if I'm REALLY stuck on a pose or how a character exists in a space, but I don't like being constrained by them by using them constantly and that was what it was starting to feel like while I was using them for Time Gate so I've moved away from 3D character models and stuck exclusively to using 3D assets for backgrounds and things that aren't going to affect the overall quality of my work or how I make it.

I think the fact that a lot of people straight up don't notice that I use 3D assets in Rekindled is a testament to that LMAO Although you can tell in some of the earlier episodes when it was just me working on it and I had to balance quality with turnaround time. I've always hated drawing backgrounds and so Banshriek has been a huge help with relieving that stress and adding that extra touch to Rekindled that I just can't feasibly bring on my own :' )

If you're interested in trying out 3D models for yourself, then by all means do it! You won't know what works for you until you try it. Most of my advice stems from experience, I'm not someone who wants to spend all day messing around with 3D dolls, so using them to aid in my drawing just wound up being redundant, time-consuming, and boring. But there are folks out there who love messing around with 3D models, there are even comics out there that are fully 3D with zero drawing, using models that are handmade. Webcomics are a medium, you can do whatever you want :' )

The only advice I have to give from experience is to be aware that like with any tool, they aren't necessarily a "replacement" for the learning process, they should supplement your learning alongside other resources and references. You should still make an effort to learn foundational things like composition, lighting, color theory, dynamic gestures, etc. regardless of whether you're working in 2D, 3D, or a fusion of the two. "There Are No Demons" has a look to it that's uncanny and that's clearly the point so the 3D models help a LOT with that, but there are just as many webtoons that use 3D models poorly and wind up with an uncanny look they weren't intending to have (ex. Let's Play).
