Fun fact! In the UK (and I'm assuming in America as well) if you invent something on company time and with company resources (especially if you figure it out as a normal part of your job, eg technician) the company owns what you make! (Sarcastic enthusiasm)
Considering Mr freezes backstory in BTAS I've always just assumed that's why he doesn't make any money out of his crazy tech - he was the inventor, but the company owns the patent for his work (in spite of the fact that he was working in secret from what I remember)
I think it makes sense that his tendancy towards domestic terrorism is at least in part fueled by a desire to make sure the tech is heavily associated with danger and easy weaponisation, though that's also continuity dependant considering Nora is alive and needs care in some versions but is already dead in others
Danny and the Riddler getting on like a house on fire because Danny is used to helping ghosts with their obsession and the Riddler gets enrichment time
Like, Danny answers riddles but he makes a show out of thinking about them out loud and taking his time and appreciating the riddle
Which is very different from the people either doing it out of fear, being done with him or super quickly
#i know this random little bit of IP law#because an uncle of mine invented#some kind of insulation#that they use in planes#or used?#current tech or not#it made something to the tune#of a few million#which is a lot nowadays#but was WAY MORE#when he invented it in the late 80s#ALWAYS REMEMBER#DONT LET YOUR COMPANY KNOW#WHEN YOU FIGURE SHIT OUT#WHEN YOU FIGURE SONETHING OUT#GET YOUR ASS TO A LAWYER#i dont care how much they cost#SIT ON THAT IDEA#UNTIL YOU CAN AFFORD ONE#YOUR COMPANY DOES NOT DESERVE THE PROFITS FROM YOUR WIT#YOU DO#im pretty sure#this counts#as#anti capitalism#so like sorry to derail the fun post!

anyone know if bookbinding glue works on canvas? im thinking i want to add a shield to my halloween costume next year and am trying to figure out how to attach the front
#not silm#not art#halloween#first attempt w cardboard hot glue and canvas worked fairly well but the back is kind of lumpy from the glue and the corners arent great#so im thinking of doing painted canvas on book board with binding glue to adhere it#so itll be nice and sturdy#not sure how i would attach the straps though#unfortunately im too busy to do much in the way of costume upgrades rn but for next year i have a few things in mind#i definitely want to do a cloak- i saw this nice quilted fabric at joanns that could work as an insulating/lining layer to give it weight#i really want to do fake fur trim for the Fancy Himring Cloak but ill have to find something im not allergic to#idk how to do cloak clasps but the actual sewing part should be reasonably simple since its mostly one piece#just have to attach the outer layer and the lining layer and hem the thing#for the helmet im trying to find larger brads that might work to add a rotating visor#idk how to get it to stay shut though. will probably have to adjust the angle so it doesnt keep getting stuck on my nose#and so i can actually wear glasses with it and not fall down every single set of stairs like last time i wore it#anyone know if there are like. sewing patterns but for 14th century helmets?#armor wise i might actually go with the slipper top for pauldrons#would probably be decently padded#gambeson means i need to learn how to sew shirts#so maybe thatll be a few years down the line#for the shield i have one custom heraldry and one feanorian heraldry. maybe ill make two shields idk#the cuirass is going to be harder - maybe alternate a few layers of cardboard and quilted fabric? would that get too thick tho#ive tested cardboard + heavy waffle blanket gambeson and that works pretty well so maybe just go with that#maybe a cheap bookboard layer for the top?#idk how well you can paint book board though. will have to run some experiments

Granted I have the overall geographical and cultural knowledge of a 4th grader but from what I can tell the nuclear family model really does seem to be a white colonial invention
Different cultures have different approaches but I mainly hear about either large family units where multiple generations support each other and raise their children and grandchildren together or an "it takes a village" approach where children are raised somewhat communally
And I can't really speak on it much or claim that these families were free of abuse or that children aren't often an oppressed group basically everywhere I know of but the way ownership of your children is so engrained into white society is so bizarre
Like once you notice it you can't unnotice it even the most loving well meaning parents don't know what to do about it because everyone is so isolated from their own families and their own communities so you wind up with 1-2 parents who have full legal ownership of their child and are raised in a culture where you don't have personhood until you're 18 and all attempts at self actualization before them are seen as clueless rebellion. Like our culture is so divorced from the concept that a parent is someone who is helping mentor and care for their child so they can thrive as a fellow human being and it's actually so alarming
And ik this problem isn't unique to white and colonized people but it's honestly really soothing to hear about how other cultures approach and view parenting and community as a whole and to internalize it doesn't have to be this way
#like i was reading a book by Sabaa Tahir who's Pakistani#and the perspective on parenthood portrayed in it so healing#like when Salahuddin mentions that his mom taught him not to thank his parents growing up#''Ama taught me that saying thank you to your own parents is unnecessary. Akin to thanking your lungs for breathing. The times I tried#she looked at me like I’d rejected Saturday-morning paratha.''#and like obviously the idea isn't that your kids should be ungrateful im assuming that it's their behavior and overall respect thats thanks#but as someone who was raised thanking everyone for everything especially my parents no matter what it really stood out bc even little stuff#like that can make a huge difference yk? since I can remember white adults particularly my parents taught me i was a burden#and that their taking care of me was an act of kindness rather than a responsibility and I don't think it's some big conspiracy to make kids#feel horrible but it's not really teaching gratitude it's just teaching guilt#thats just one example tho#I also am at the extreme end of white cultural isolation (neither of my parents are close to their families we've never lived near them and#they specifically isolate us from everyone so the difference is a lot more drastic for me than it probably is a lot of other people#but when i hear ppl being close to their neighbors or anyone that lives near them i go a little insane with longing tbh#like what is that like? to grow up in an environment where your world is more than just your parents approval?#where there's some kind of insulation between you and all of your parents problems bc there is no one else#this was not a ramble with any kind of conclusion tho akehrjdhr#and once again I am absolutely not saying that child abuse is uniquely white bc. el em ey oh thats not how any of this works#it's just that white cultures view on children is sickening

Anyways incorporating new saint hcs into my semi au Sliver lore means that now saint gets to continuously experience ascending Sliver forever 👍
#rat rambles#rain posting#along with everything else theyve ever experienced yay#here have some other miscellaneous saint hcs while Im thinking abt them#as Ive said before I like to think that they are physically and mentally quite young and mostly act on what motions theyve taken before#which since their existence is infinite and all that jazz it mostly means that they carry both the same actions and the same emotions#across all moments of their existence#they don't rly understand the things they do or the mental states they achieve as they have a hard time focusing on any given moment#it also doesn't help that the more they think the more their thoughts overlap with all that has been and all that there ever will be#plus theyre y'know. a slugcat. so generally they arent super built to deal with smth this complex#no one rly would be but especially not some adolescent slugcat#I also dont think of them as cruel or mean in nature#I generally think of them as fairly kind when they can be#not that its easy for them to act on it#theyre also ofc generally extremely frail and sickly but thats mostly due to how thin theyre stretched out#their body doesnt age but it still is clearly strained under the pressure of an eternal existence#anyways for a complete change in tone I also like to imagine their fur isnt actually like mammal fur#idk quite how to describe the vision in my head but think of it as kind of like thick insulated foam almost?#its actually prone to getting gooey and melty when its too warm#they do have quite sensitive skin underneath the coat so its important to keep the coat clean while taking care to not disturb it too much#hense their long thin tongue thats often used for careful and precise grooming#or at least thats the idea. saint doesn't actually take very good care of their coat and its often left worse for wear as a result#a more typical fluffy slugcat would usually be able to survive in the worst of the blizzard's that appear in saint's campaign#in fact in my hcs there are actually plenty of slugcats whove built large communities together in such climates with the advantage that#they can afford to emerge during the blizzards to stockpile on food and then hide away during the calm times#it's not uncommon for groups that hibernate together to eat their coats to recycle nutrients and ensure they won't overhead during their#shared hibernation together#their coats will usually grow back during that time and are usually grown enough to handle the outside world again by the time they need to#communal grooming is also extremely common as maintaining their skin health is one of the most important parts of their survival

It's definitely not the most widely held belief in online fan spaces (at least not at it's full potency, I think a watered down version is more widely felt imo) but I do think some fans approach art and fandom with this weird idea that because a bad story disappoints or even hurts the fans of a work, it's like. A personal and/or moral failing of the creator for making that bad story. And it should be treated with the same gravitas as something with more far reaching consequences and implications. Yknow?
#ramblings of a lunatic#the stuff got me thinking about this (broadly) doesn't even apply to this post it just got my brain going#i have a lot of thoughts about how wild the blogging style is across a lot of comics fandom tumblr#about how it's one of the few fandoms I've been in that genuinely can't claim to be more chill than twitter#bc even though twitter is structurally the platform more designed to produce outrage engagement amonst ppl#comics tumblr is genuinely just so naturally vitriolic that it completely matches twitters energy without those structural flaws#like as in there's no real environmental excuse for everyone being crazy it's just like that here#and the occasional toxicity i stumble upon just kind of made me start thinking about this#i do think a lot of ppl on comics tumblr have valid complaints about the works#i just also see ppl treat disappointing stories as moral failures aside from any ~problematic~ content featured in it#(and also. problematic content exists on a sliding scale that logically should effect critical response but doesn't often in comics spaces)#it's like those callout lists that start w/ ships the target doesn't like and ends with their illegal human trafficking ring#girl let's prioritise a bit#i also think that tumblr is an incredibly insulated environment from comic fan spaces as a whole?#like the sledgehammer approach to crit and the ridiculously high expectations for a famously stupid medium#is in some ways a direct response to the supposed vibe of irl comic spaces (often not dominated by marginalized ppl-#-and therefore socially focused crit of the works is shut down/ignored/not engaged w much-#-and that any bad storyline will be praised and elevated if it has superficial crowd pleasers like big fights and power scaling)#and i think there's some merit to that#but i also think that comics Tumblr suffers from the a lot of the chronically online fanspace hallmarks#there's always going to be a different tone when it's me and comics cashier bitching about gotham war#than it is seeing ppl online post in such a manner that discussion is actively discouraged (bc there's already a didactic tone to begin w)#anyway none of this is unique to comics Tumblr (minus the being equally as rancid as twitter)#and it's not like I'm not having fun. I'm actually having a lot of fun analysing the few moments I'm not having fun bc of All Of The Above#comics tumblr is an ideal test subject for my experiments#and i need to make more art so i can nestle deeper in the bushes to watch the wildlife from afar#anyway. at least 60% of you are alright. 20% I'd argue are even cool.#10% of you are right but annoying about it and 10% of you would've done great as catholic crusaders#but unfortunately were born as queer 20-somethings in the 21st century

Are there other content warnings than the obvious graphic depictions of violence/gore, (like period typical homophobia, rape mention etc) in Barking?
I'm not sure of a full exact list--some acts will be more implied, some will be on screen, and I won't tack on anything gruesome that isn't right for the story. No overblown NC-17 cut-your-hand-on-the-edginess stuff.
But so far, (at least so far as I've planned)
SPOILERS BELOW
Instances of graphic violence/general horrifying description
Murder
Period typical biases in general (it's the 1890's and opinions were Classically Shitty on a lot of topics/marginalized people, but these bits will appear very sparingly, as I and the Narrative frankly don't need to heap a ton of that shit into the story ~just for the accuracy~)
Rape as a threat
Cannibalism* (*Some instances fresher than others. Maggots are involved.)
That's all the big stuff off the top of my head.
#also just in general: Dracula is going to be some kind of hateable in this one. No insulation of a diary and hindsight.#He is going to be a bastard and a half and be incredibly creepy/punchable as he does so.#dracula#barking harker#my writing#content warnings#horror

Sometimes I think this principle about the honse can even be bad.
The fact that working with them at all provokes profound feelings of awareness of your limitations and the need for communication, I mean.
If you are even peripheral to equestrian interest discussion you are going to see a lot of people who believe they understand their horse more than they do. And that's not unique to any hobby or interest; there are people who believe they are better hobby mechanics than they are, better martial artists than they are, etc.
But consider the dog.
The dog comes in a variety of sizes. There's lots of cultural baggage about dogs, and many people buy a dog expecting they don't need to know anything about dogs. They have schema about 'what a dog is' that they were raised with. They aren't prepared to see things from the dog's point of view. You can watch It's Me or the Dog to go see this in action pretty much every time.
It's easier to project this way on small dogs than big dogs because you can more easily manhandle a small dog and force it to do what you need. (not that people don't project on big dogs, some people treat them like muscle cars, it's weird.)
But even big dogs are pretty easy to accommodate in our society. They usually don't need special buildings, for example. The barrier for entry to owning a large dog is comparatively low compared to owning a horse.
It's true that some people can get a horse somewhat cheaply. But a horse's basic needs are harder to meet. They need a lot more space, they need specialized housing, they aren't casual companion animals for your daily life, and more.
A lot of people wouldn't commit to that... only to 'suck' at it.
So with dogs we start at the small end and the bigger and bigger the dog gets the more likely it's able to maul you if you treat it bad... and then I think we actually have a chance to step backwards when we get to a horse-sized critter. Because it is really difficult to put up that level of investment for what feels like a low return.
Like I am not going to put forward some kind of singular Horse Person Projection Theory, ok? there's a vast variety of people out there. Some people are so enamored with the idea of horse that they are willing to do all that work, but are fragile to criticism of an experienced ring teacher etc. Other people can put a saddle on something and decide they know how to ride a horse simply because they can get on top of it. Still others will experience a lot of near misses or accidents while riding their horse and begin to romanticize the patterns. And then you have the people who think they're Dragonriders of Pern... It's not all one thing.
But a horse is still a large beast that cannot directly tell you what it's feeling in human terms, and a large high-investment critter like that is a really enormous human emotional bid. 'Horse people are Like That because you can't do anything with a horse without entering into The Mind of the Horse," yeah, and human beings are also often NOT prepared to respect the mentality of even other humans. Being forced to do this by necessity will make people super weird about if they are any good at it. It is not only a 'spiritual merging' but I think a form of... trauma? of actually NOT being able to dominate a creature, or expect that it will accommodate you through social scripts.
There are many people unprepared for this, as they would be unprepared for alien first contact... but still want to tell their alien adventure story, because aliens, bruh, how could you meet aliens and NOT connect with them?
Me: I'm going to look at horse forums, I bet the drama there is so funny
Me after 4 hours of horse forums: Damn....those people really love and care about their horses...
#i want to make it clear that i DONT want to negate anything you're saying#its true#and this isnt me trying to be like 'some people are just bad at thing and are in denial'.#its like... caring for horses themselves is such a big bid that it is harder to ACCEPT that large reality.#'failure' to understand honse is a nightmare of Sunk Cost plus Physically Enforced Rejection. but by whose authority did you fail? God's?#nothing's handing out honse report cards. especially not for free. many people can 'choose' not to fail honse.#Only the beast itself can say you're done and if a horse is more patient fucking around might not result in finding out right away.#there are even phony trainers out there who Get Away With It for years! They have a lot to insulate them from consequences.#It's x10 harder to admit that an animal might be Enduring you rather than working with you if you must move the sky for a chance to love it#Valid to Eat Fingers is a meme about the fear laypeople have about a Beast that could Do Anything It Wants#it would be hard to be a Horse Person with that fear. So its easy to conclude you and horse Have Understanding.#much easier than actually achieving some#btw im not some kind of special expert I haven't had the chance to ride in years but this was really profound to me when I was more active.#i know other people described the 'horse community drama' im not rly going there i just mean 'horse is big PROMOTES weird human behavior'

well ain’t this some fuckshit
Just heard about the mess that YA author Maggie Tokuda-Hall has been dealing with. tl;dr, Her publisher offered her the chance to be part of an initiative that would’ve put her work in a lot more stores and libraries. It’s an initiative specifically aimed at amplifying Asian voices... but only if she removed the word “racism” from her author’s note. On a book about the Japanese internment.
I am very glad she rejected this offer, and I 100% agree with her that this is pure cowardice. I’m appalled at Scholastic -- or any other publisher who’s doing this but whose authors can’t take the risk of speaking out. This is the kind of crap that marginalized writers have to deal with all the time -- and it is also how fascism takes root: “just business” decisions that perpetuate injustice, systematic erasure of targeted groups from their own damn stories, institutions choosing to do what’s easy over what’s right.
(I have been very fortunate to never have a publisher do this to me. Plenty of disrespectful bs from institutions and individuals within the industry, but never from the people who signed my checks. I’m also somewhat insulated from the book ban bullshit because my work is genre and isn’t aimed at kids -- though that’s coming, of course. Fascists don’t stop until they are stopped.)
Anyway. Pop over to Maggie’s blog to read the full story -- or better yet hop on a retail site and buy her books. It’s up to readers now to support marginalized authors, since it’s clear nobody else will.

cat shifter reader x 141 pt.4
Though you wanted to deny it, the fiends that took over your home and invaded your space had, in fact, nursed you to health. Once Price got you to eat, Gaz insisted on cooking soup for you, and bringing it to the bedroom everyday. He left it on a table near the door, too, giving you space. Sometimes Soap switched it up by sharing his own food.
Now all that was left was some remaining congestion; that, and a lingering itch at the back of your throat that had you coughing, but a dry cough, and not the icky, thick kind. Still, you wished you could stay wrapped up in bed. It was much more comfortable here compared to the attic; the sheets were starting to smell more like you, and it was getting easier to fall asleep without the aid of fatigue. Not to mention the insulated walls that kept heat in, and the lack of holes in the wood that allowed cold wind to blow through. But it seemed that life—or rather, Ghost—had other plans.
You had been mid-yawn, stretching even your tail out, when he marched into the room and picked you up like an unruly child.
“Rats are back,” was all he said, carrying you out while you took a frantic look around, seeing no one else home to argue with him for your comfort. “Get to work.”
You scowled, or at least attempted to with a cat’s face, meowing loudly in protest as you were dropped unceremoniously on the still-wet ground. And to think you had snuck into the bathroom just last night to get all nice and clean. Now your fur was stained with dirt again.
“You’re a barn cat, aren’t you? Do barn cats things.”
You hopped onto a nearby crate, and flicked the mud off your paws, onto his jacket..
Hiss.
Ghost stared dead at you, unaffected. "Look, I don't care how soft Soap or Gaz are on ya. Either you earn your keep, or I leave you out here. Permanently. Understood?"
Yeah. Understood. Mean ass military man.
With your nose stuck up, you hop onto the roof from there, and out of sight. Fine. You could do what he wanted; mice were easy prey, and you'd caught dozens of them in your time here. But now that you didn't have to be relegated to eating them, well...
Ghost would have a little surprise when coming back to his room tonight.
_
Content with the pile of dead mice collected at the foot of Ghost's bed, when Soap, Gaz, and Price arrive home after a trip into town, you flop down, belly up and purring.
“What’s this, lass?” Soap grins, bending at the knee to pat your stomach. “Playin’ pet cat now, are ya?”
You look up at Soap for a moment, then latch onto his hand with all four paws—and all four sets of claws.
“OW— ow— I THOUGHT YE WERE BEING FRIENDLY!”
“She probably was ‘til you called her 'pet--'”
And that's when they hear Ghost screaming curses in the background.
