God, this is fucking crazy
So i only have 3 more classes to take, but it'll cost the same to take 3 classes as 4 classes. So I've been thinking about taking a 4th class just for the hell of it. Something fun and/or easy.
Out of curiosity, I looked up orchestras. I was in it in my first year, but I haven't consistently played since 2016. But I still dream about being in an orchestra again. I *miss it*. So I was like. Well, what if *that* was my 4th class next semester? What If?
I looked it up. This week is the last week they're doing auditions for it. There was only one more spot free after today. And that's *tomorrow evening*.
I haven't really played my violin much in YEARS. I'm so out of practice. But apparently they don't reject anyone outright. Auditions are just for placement. So worst case scenario, I get placed in an orchestra at a lower skill level than I was at my prime. It'd still be an orchestra.
It's crazy short notice, but I don't think I'd forgive myself if I passed it up. Bc I have just one more semester before I graduate. One last opportunity to be in a school orchestra. And if I didn't do this, I'd be left with that What If forever.
So. Crazy short notice, but I have a violin audition tomorrow!!! Hahahaha
#speculation nation#im literally shaking with nerves rn but i want this so so so badly#i remember. how to play. my arms are just so much stiffer than they used to be. and my nails. man im gonna have to trim my fucking nails#at least my left hand. kinda sucks bc i like the polish i have on rn but u cant have any long nail at all for violin.#i need to play two scales of my choosing. ascending and descending in three octaves.#recommended for violin is A C or E-flat major. of course i know A and C but i'd have to look up E-flat. never did much with flats in school#then again i have that One Two Three and a Half rhythm Down. thats how id often warm myself up.#start with the base G string and just do a scale up and down (one octave). go up to the next note. do it again.#again and again until i started running out of room on the E string. & if i was Real motivated maybe id start shifting to continue.#so all id need to do is find the E flat and id be good. it all follows the same pattern.#the harder challenge will be the solo or etude. 2-3 minutes in length. only *one day* to prepare.#i have NO IDEA what id even play. i'll look in my old sheet music to see if theres anything that might work#simple enough for me to relearn on such short notice. and interesting enough to be played solo#(since i was always in orchestras it's not always the best for solo playing. tho i was also first violin section a lot#which is Basically the same as playing solo lmaooo)#if i cant find anything i do have a few sheet music books i could look in. id hate to play smth too simple#but better simple and Right than trying to do something above my current skill level.#which IRKS ME bc once upon a time i was the 4th best violinist in my high school. out of nearly 2k students.#but thats what happens when u go years without consistent practice :p ur arm gets Stiff.#im. still nervous but also thinking about the music is making me EXCITED.#it's going to be a wild time prepping for this thing but itll be over in like 5 mins and i dont even have to worry about Passing#so long as i *do it* i should get into something. i just need to push myself. do it. get out there. *play your violin*#i already cried in a public bathroom for 10 mins today and im feeling emotional Again.#not quite crying emotional tho thankfully. just. i feel like i need to climb onto a rooftop and SCREAM!!!! but like in a good way.#so so so nervous but itll be so so so worth it. i could be in an orchestra again. finally. finally finally finally.#and i STILL NEED TO FINISH THIS ASSIGNMENT.....!!!! hfkahfks today has been. a DAY.#just. keeps going through my head. i could be in an orchestra again. i could be in an orchestra again. at least one more time.

under the mistletoe: strings attached !
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
ąØą§ ; a dance major and a musician? yeah no way, at least, not in this university!
pairing! dancemajor!jungwon x violinmajor!reader | wc. 0.8k | warnings: kind of rushed IM SO SORRY and my thoughts were so disorganised 慠慠 EN-
šŸ–‡ļø : jungwonā€™s uni fic is finally here ~ itā€™s kind of christmas themed since ONLY TEN DAYS TILL CHRISTMAS
so you and jungwon attend the same prestigious arts university
thereā€™s multiple different departments: dance, theatre, art, music etc
jungwon is in the dance department and heā€™s CRAZY GOOD everyone knows him
if thereā€™s a dance festival or event coming up you just KNOW that heā€™ll be centre with the most killing parts
you are a music major and you play the violin
the violin was the first thing you held in your hands as a kid
like as soon as you gained a consciousness your parents handed you a 1/32 violin to play on
jungwon just really really really hates the music majors
he thinks you guys are all arrogant who think anything thatā€™s not music is unworthy
no because why did that flute major look at him like heā€™s a carton of milk that went bad
you donā€™t like the dance majors either
most of them have strange personalities and look half starved
ANYWAYS jungwon has to admit
youā€™re good at what you do
youā€™re first chair violin in orchestra FOR A REASON
thereā€™s a reason why the professors give you the solos EVERY SINGLE TIME
thereā€™s also a reason why you sweep up ALL THE AWARDS at competitions
but that doesnā€™t mean jungwon has to like you
well you donā€™t really like him either heā€™s always hogging up the dance practice rooms when you need to go there for the mirror (your professor keeps telling you to improve your posture)
girl why is he practicing at 4am gtfo
so itā€™s yet another annual christmas festival
you got the solo for winter by vivaldi
are we surprised? no.
jungwon got the centre role and the killing part for his dance performance.
are we surprised? also no.
yeah but we are surprised about the music and dance department collaborating
jungwon started feeling queasy just from the news
wdym a few selected music majors are going to form a chamber orchestra to play the music for his dance for the festival
of course youā€™re the first violin in that as well the world just loves torturing jungwon
so yall meet up together in the bigass dance practice room for rehearsal
let me tell you: jungwon does not like how the cello is leaving scratches in the dance practice room floor
get that flipping endpin OFF the precious wooden floors
rehearsal is already off to a bad start
also jungwon started genuinely tweaking after a guy broke his rosin and it went on the floor
he was about to throw hands before you suddenly apologised
ā€œoh, sorry about that. me and the guy will clean that up asap.ā€
maybe youā€™re not that bad after all
jungwonā€™s hatred and passive aggressiveness towards ou slowly fades over the month of rehearsals
instead of bickering you were starting to notice how well he dances like DAMN that line really clean
and jungwon keeps noticing how your violin playing is so good how you doing that shit
you also notice that jungwonā€™s looking kind of fine HMMMM
but you just tell yourself to ignore that thereā€™s no way youā€™re crushing on a dance major
atp youā€™re just gaslighting yourself you stay back until like 2am claiming you need to ā€œpracticeā€ (you just want to watch jungwon dance)
you guys still argue everyday though jungwon is so annoying
itā€™s really giving ā€œi hate you but wait you kinda fireā€ vibes
christmas eve finally approaches
and since itā€™s a nice fancy event everyone is dressed up nicely
you see jungwon in the morning for rehearsal HOLY SHIT HE LOOKS SO GOOD
you get really flustered and jungwon finds you so cute
you're blushing as you talk to him and jungwon just stares at you the whole time
jungwon may seem nonchalant outside but heā€™s screaming inside about how pretty you look in your black dress
your winter solo absolutely devoured
jungwon filmed the whole thing on his camcorder that was just too good
and your performance together with jungwon was also so good
JUNGWONā€™S DANCING *faints*
after the performance you just watch the twelfth night performed by the theatre majors and the philosophy student do yet another dry reading of some boring book
thereā€™s also a little late christmas dinner going on that jungwon and you go to together
you two go from bickering to a giggling mess after a few glasses of champagne
jungwon takes you to see the giant christmas tree afterwards
he gives you his coat because heā€™s a gentleman and youā€™re freezing in the december snow in your dress
im just here imagining you two staring at the tree as it snows and jungwon suddenly says
ā€œoh look, weā€™re under a mistletoe. you know what this means, right?ā€
you panic so hard for a second oml
your heart is beating SO FAST (flight of the bumblebee.?) but you can't let him know that
you just scoff ā€œwe are not going to kiss-ā€œ
jungwon just shuts you up with a sweet little kiss
youā€™re not complaining you only protested to protect your dignity after hating on him for two years straight

We as a community don't talk enough about spencer playing the piano. There's so many good scenarios, and I haven't one fic ever talking about it. (Yes, im writing this whilst procrastinating playing the violin)(loterally imagine spencer reid accompanying me instead of my scary accompanist)(Yes, lore drop elise plays the violin)
Okay possible scenarios:
Reader wants to learn the piano, so she sits on spencers lap while he guides her fingers to the right keys and shows her a couple of chords
Spencer learns how to play readers' favourite songs to make her happy & now she can sing along
This isn't really a scenario, but just imagine him practising the piano. As someone who spends her whole life in orchestras + talking to other people who do music, I'd find that SO HOT (idk if finding that attractive is relatable though)
Also, imagine him accompanying you while you sing or play an instrument, because a really big part of that is concentrating on the person doing the solo he'd probably learn the music off by heart so he could just watch you play. I might be the only person, but I'D BE SO IN LOVE

Writing Notes: Classical Music Eras
Tumblr media
Classical Music - describes orchestral music, chamber music, choral music, and solo performance pieces, yet within this broad genre, several distinct periods exist. EachĀ classical eraĀ has its own characteristics that distinguish it from classical music at large.
Eras of Classical Music
Musicologists divide classical music into historical eras and stylistic subgenres. One way to examine classical music history is to divide it into 7 periods:
Medieval period (1150 to 1400): Music has existed since the dawn of human civilization, but most music historians begin cataloging classical music in the Medieval era. Medieval music is known for monophonic chantā€”sometimes called Gregorian chant due to its use by Gregorian monks. In addition to singing, Medieval musicians played instrumental music on instruments like the lute, the flute, the recorder, and select string instruments.
Renaissance period (1400 to 1600):Ā Renaissance-era musicĀ introduced polyphonic music to wide audiences, particularly via choral music, which was performed in liturgical settings. In addition to the lute, Renaissance musicians played viol, rebec, lyre, and guitar among other string instruments. Brass instruments like the sackbut and cornet also emerged during this era. Perhaps the most notable Renaissance composers were Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, John Dowland, and Thomas Tallis.
Baroque period (1600 to 1750): During the Baroque era, classical music surged forward in its complexity. The Baroque era saw a full embrace of tonal musicā€”music based onĀ major scales and minor scalesĀ rather than modesā€”and it maintained the polyphony of the Renaissance era. Many of the instruments used by today's orchestras were common in Baroque music, including violin, viola, cello, contrabass (double bass), bassoon, and oboe. Harpsichord was the dominant keyboard instrument, although the piano first emerged during this era. The most renowned composers of the early Baroque era include Alessandro Scarlatti and Henry Purcell. By the late Baroque period, composers like Antonio Vivaldi, Dominico Scarlatti, George Frideric Handel, and Georg Philipp Telemann achieved massive popularity. The most influential composer to come from the Baroque era is Johann Sebastian Bach, who composed extensiveĀ preludes, fugues, cantatas, and organ music.
Classical period (1750 to 1820): Within the broad genre of classical music exists the Classical period. This era of music marked the first time that the symphony, the instrumental concerto (which highlights virtuoso soloists), and theĀ sonata formĀ were brought to wide audiences. Chamber music for trio and string quartet was also popular during the Classical era. The signature classical composer is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, although he was far from the only star of the classical era. Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, and J.S. Bach's sons J.C. Bach and C.P.E. Bach were also star composers during this period. Opera composers like Mozart and Christoph Willibald Gluck developed the operatic form into a style that remains recognizable today. Ludwig van Beethoven began his career during the Classical era, but his own innovations helped usher in the next musical era.
Romantic period (1820 to 1900): Exemplified by late-period Beethoven, the Romantic era introduced emotion and drama to the platonic beauty of Classical period music. Early Romantic works like Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 set a template for nearly all nineteenth-century music that followed. Many of the composers who dominate today's symphonic repertoires composed during the Romantic era, including Frederic Chopin, Franz Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn, Hector Berlioz, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Anton Bruckner, Gustav Mahler, Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Richard Strauss, Jean Sibelius, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. Opera composers like Richard Wagner, Giuseppe Verdi, and Giacomo Puccini used Romanticism's emotional power to create beautiful melodic lines sung in Italian and German. The Romantic era also saw the creation of a new instrument in the woodwind family, the saxophone, which would gain special prominence in the century to come.
Modern period (1900 to 1930): The Modern era of art and music came about in the early twentieth century. Classical composers of the early twentieth century reveled in breaking the harmonic and structural rules that had governed previous forms of classical music. Igor Stravinsky defiantly stretched instruments to their natural limits, embraced mixed meter, and challenged traditional notions of tonality in works likeĀ The Rite of Spring. French composers like Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel led a subgenre of twentieth-century music called Impressionism. Others like Dimitri Shostakovich, Paul Hindemith, and BĆ©la BartĆ³k stuck with classical forms like the piano concerto and the sonata, but challenged harmonic traditions. Perhaps most radical was the German composer Arnold Schoenberg who, along with disciples like Alban Berg and Anton Webern, disposed of tonality altogether and embraced serial (or 12-tone) music.
Postmodern period (1930 to today): The art music of the twentieth century shifted starting in the 1930s and continuing into the post-World War II era, ushering in a style of music that is sometimes called postmodern or contemporary. Early purveyors of postmodern music include Olivier Messiaen, who combined classical forms with new instruments like the ondes martenot. Postmodern and contemporary composers like Pierre Boulez, Witold Lutoslawski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Henryk GĆ³recki, Gyƶrgy Ligeti, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, John Adams, and Christopher Rouse have blended the lines between tonal and atonal music, and theyā€™ve blurred the lines between classical music and other forms like rock andĀ jazz.

Antonio Vivaldi
Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741) was an Italian violin virtuoso and composer of baroque music (c. 1600-1750). Best known for his violin concertos, notably The Four Seasons, Vivaldi made a significant contribution to the evolution of instrumental music, influencing Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) amongst many others, particularly in the concerto form.
Early Life
Antonio Lucio Vivaldi was born in Venice on 4 March 1678. His father was a professional violinist (but had been a baker before that) who was a member of the orchestra of St. Mark's in Venice. Antonio, the eldest of six children, was taught by his father to play the same instrument. The family home still stands today on the Fondamenta del Dose canal. Antonio also studied to become a priest from 1693 and was ordained in 1703. Vivaldi had red hair which led to his nickname il prete rosso (ā€˜the Red Priest'). The decision to join the priesthood did no harm to his musical career as, from 1709, Vivaldi also worked as a violin teacher in a Venetian orphanage for girls, the Conservatorio Pio Ospedale della PietĆ . The Conservatorio attracted talented solo musicians to its regular orchestra and choir for which Vivaldi composed pieces for performance in special services like Lent. Vivaldi gained more time for composing when he was exempted from joining Mass on medical grounds; he had what he called stretezza di petto ('a tightness of the chest'), an ailment that never went away. Vivaldi returned frequently to the Conservatorio throughout his career and was appointed its concert director in 1735.

If Music Be The Food Of Love
Laia Aleixandri x Reader
Summary: Leila can't quite believe that Laia's bringing her to see the orchestra
Tumblr media
"Since when were you into music?"
"I've always been into music."
Leila gave her a deadpan stare, one perfect brow raised. "Not classical music. You told me when you moved in that classical music was the bane of your existence and if you found out whoever played it in the locker room, you would come down upon them with a vengeance."
Laia had forgotten that but she awkwardly clear her throat, trying to brush the comment away. "Things can change," She said," Maybe I've matured."
"Matured? Ha!" Leila replied," Sure, and pigs can fly."
"Look, if you don't want to be here then fine! Leave!"
"Whoa, whoa!" Leila held her hands up in defeat. "I never meant that. Thank you for the tickets, really. I was just questioning your newfound love for the orchestra. Sorry if I hit a nerve or something."
Laia ignored her friend as they filed into the auditorium, finding their seats in the box. "Hi," She greeted the other people in the box with familiarity as she took her seat, dragging Leila with her," Hello. It's good to see you."
"Who is your friend, Laia?" A much older woman asked, hands wrapped tightly around the walking stick between her legs.
"This is Leila, we play together. For club and country," Laia said, indicating to Leila who looked incredibly confused as to just how many times Laia, the self-proclaimed classical music hater, had been to see this orchestra.
"A different type of playing than this," The old woman joked.
"Very different to this," Laia agreed.
A hush descended upon the audience as the curtain rose and revealed the orchestra, a group of smartly dressed individuals in all black.
Instantly, Laia's eyes sought you out. She had no problem finding you. She never had a problem finding you - even though you sat closest to the audience in the first chair to the conductor's left. She was drawn to you no matter where you were and could find you in a crowd without a second thought.
Your face was a mask of professionalism but, when your eyes glanced to the box, the barest hint of a smile poked at the corner of your lips.
"Don't tell me that's why we've come," Leila hissed in her ear," Because you've got the hots for a violin girl."
Laia didn't get time to respond (not that she would, lost to the world staring into your eyes despite the distance between you) because the conductor cleared his throat, hand up to begin the concert.
Music of angelic quality filled the room but Laia didn't turn her gaze from you. Your eyes were slightly closed as you counted your beats and rests. Your violin was a snug fit under your chin and your bow moved over your strings with such experience and skill that it was obvious why you were the concertmaster.
Laia didn't stop watching you even when there was a flute solo. You caught her eye several times but mainly stayed focused on your conductor. But, every so often, your head would tilt the slightest bit to the side, towards the box that Laia was sitting in.
Your eyes would meet for a moment and you would instantly be transported back to when you first met her, in a hole in the wall cafƩ that served the best coffee in the city.
She had asked to sit at your table as everywhere else was full. You would later learn that it was just an excuse so she could finally pluck up the courage to speak to you.
You welcomed her into your booth and got to talking, about her football matches and your orchestra concerts. She confessed her hatred for all things classical and you invited her round to your place to listen to good classical music - because only people who heard bad classical music ever swore off the genre entirely.
Things had blossomed easily from there and soon she was sat in the family box with your fellow musicians' families, listening to you play with a soft smile and warm arms to welcome you at the end.
You adjusted your positioning as the introduction to your solo began to build. The music swelled before, one by one each of your fellow string sections dropped off. Your first violins accompanied you into the first few notes before stilling, letting you take the lead - your shining moment of the song.
You kept your eyes on Laia as you played, not really needing the conductor when you had played this particular solo many times to perfection.
It was actually the first solo you had ever played in Laia's company when she had demanded to hear your excellence on your third date, curled up in your apartment after a warm meal.
ā—ļ½žā—ļ½žā—ļ½žā—ļ½ž
"Are we allowed to be here?" Leila asked in a hushed voice even as she took a flute of champagne from the waiter offering it to her.
"For the last time, yes," Laia said back, sipping her own champagne. It wasn't her alcohol of choice but your events tended to be fancy like this so she had gained an appreciation for it.
Leila let out a breath as she surveyed the room where the afterparty was taking place. "You never told me how much I owe you for the tickets. I mean, a box Laia? How much did this cost?"
"Nothing." Laia was only half paying attention, eyes focussed on each of the doors, trying to guess which one you were going to walk through. "They were free."
"Free?" Leila's voice was steeped in incredulousness. "Have you been donating to the orchestra or something? Those seats were fancy."
"Not quite."
You stepped through the door on her left. Your face held a single-minded purpose as you walked across the room. You took a glass of champagne on instinct, not bothering to look at the waiter as you joined Laia and Leila.
"Hi," You said.
"Hi," Laia said back.
"Hi," You said again.
"Hello."
You broke your gaze from Laia and turned it to her companion. You smiled. "You must be Leila, it's so good to meet you. I'm y/n." You held out your hand.
She took it and nodded knowingly. "Violin girl."
You giggled, taking a sip of champagne. "That's not a name I'm quite accustomed to. Usually, it's just the concertmaster."
Leila grinned. "I'll pretend that I know what that means."
"It means that she's second in command," Laia said quickly. She placed her champagne flute off to the side and wrapped an arm securely around your waist. "I'm very proud."
"I'm glad you could come," You said to Leila sincerely," It's nice to finally meet one of Laia's friends."
Leila looked between the two of you suspiciously, taking in Laia's arm and the way you leaned into her grip, practically laying your head on her shoulder.
"I take it I have you to thank for the box tickets."
Your cheeks coloured. "I get up to four free box tickets for every performance. I told Laia she could bring whoever she wanted."
"And is Laia a constant audience member for you?"
"Always." You pressed a kiss against her cheek. "Laia's been coming to shows ever since I made her fall in love with classical music again."
"Laia? Into classical music?" Leila laughed," You must be some persuader."
"I like to think it was my kisses that really sealed the deal."
Leila roared with laughter but Laia didn't care.
She dipped her head down to meet your lips. You tasted exactly like usual, a mix of fancy champagne and the chewing gum you always used before a performance.
You kissed her back just as sweetly.
"So," Leila said, wiggling her eyebrows," I'm getting the sense here that you two are an item."
"What gave it away? The kissing?" You asked.
Leila shrugged and Laia already knew she was going to regret introducing her friend to you. "And the eye fucking every time she looked at you on stage."

There are audition videos due in a week for orchestra chair placements. It's not required, but if I want a competitive chair, then I'll have to submit one. And see, I do NOT want to be in first chair. And I probably wouldn't be, tbh. Not with how out of practice I got
...... but there's still that competitive soul in me. I wanna be at least 2nd or 3rd stand. That's my favorite place to be. Not Too much pressure, but still one of the shining stars.
And yknow, I think I could do it. I just need to practice.

[ CHAPTERS.02 ] 恏 stranger danger ā‚Šā˜† wc: 0.6k
Tumblr media
y/n examined the store from the outside, silently praying that anton was right about them selling her brand. she sighed before opening the door.
"i'll fire you if you don't get a girlfriend in the next two months." the unfamiliar voice boomed throughout the small store. that's crazy, she thought.
"that's not fair! you don't even pay me to work here." y/n passed through the small isles, looking for the string section. she took notice of the barrel full of rosin. she would have to buy a new block soon.
"i would if you had a girlfriend to buy things for."
the boy scoffed. "that doesn't even make any sense."
y/n frowned when she realized none of the bows were on display. although the situation was very awkward, she knew she would have to get their attention if she wanted to find the bow. she slowly walked up to the counter. y/n rung the bell on the counter before fidgeting with her nails again.
"hi, sorry, how can we help you?" the older woman walked up to her, smiling. the younger boy followed her, his eyebrows furrowed. when he saw her, his gaze lightened up a bit.
"hello, my friend anton told me you sell fiddlover bows. is that true, because i didn't see any over there?" y/n looked between the two, waiting to see if any of them had the answer.
"oh, you are a friend of anton," the woman's smile grew. "he's my son's friend. such a sweet boy. anyway, we do sell those bows. they're just not on display because we've had a few of them get stolen."
"that's a valid reason," y/n agreed, giggling. she glanced over at the boy behind the counter, only to find that he was already looking at her. he had a mischievous look on his face.
"do you have any preference on the bow?" y/n had already pulled up a picture of the bow on the website, showing it to the woman. "do you mind if i take this? i'll only be a minute or two."
"i don't mind." the woman walked away with y/n's phone so now she had nothing to do while she waited. she looked back at the boy. "so you're friends with anton?"
he nodded. "yeah, he's my neighbor. i'm wonbin by the way,'" y/n introduced herself also. he paused and looked away. "this is going to sound extremely weird, but can you pretend to be my girlfriend?"
she blinked slowly before laughing in his face. "no? i don't even know your name. talk about stranger danger."
"no, yeah, you're right. but i need money and you can get a discount on violin stuff if we pretend to date." y/n thought about it, glancing around the store.
"okay, i'm not going to straight-up date you but you can tell your parents that we're talking. once i get to know you, then i'll consider the whole 'fake dating' thing."
"works for me. here's my number." he handed her a sticky note with a series of digits written on it. his mom walked back with a long box in her hands.
"okay, here's the 4/4 snakewood solo violin bow," she announced, reading off of the label. she scanned the box and added the discount, then told y/n the price. after she payed, the woman handed y/n the box, along with her phone, and smiled at her. "tell anton we said hi!"
"will do! see ya', wonbin." y/n waved and the boy gestured for her to call him.
wonbin's mom looked knowingly at him. she hip-bumped him. "what was that, bin?" wonbin rolled his eyes playfully and walked into the breakroom to get his phone.
