Sander means to avoid him, afterwards.

Guilt and rage and hurt have tangled themselves into a Neromenian knot in his gut, and pulling at the threads only seems to worsen the ache.

A part of him had thrilled too much at the slip of that polite mask, the sight of the real rage beneath. A part of him would rather succumb to the temptation to dig it all up again, if only to see his own hurt reflected back at him.

He cannot apologise without sinking back into the depths of their argument. To pretend otherwise is to court disaster.

To follow in Solas’ lead and retreat back behind cool diplomacy is perhaps the only thing that will keep what’s left of their professional relationship from shattering further if their personal entanglement is already so far past the point of repair.

He intends to follow though, to traverse the rotunda in silence.

If Solas is occupied, all the better. If he acknowledges Sander’s presence, he will proceed with a curt nod of his head and little else. Only —

Only, he walks into the rotunda to find Solas’ eyes fixed on a book held in his lap, his chin tilted to the side as he moves to turn the page. Only, a dark bruise is forming along the curve of his jawline.

It was wrought, Sander knows, from a far crueler sort of passion than what placed others there before.

Yet where Solas had endeavoured to cover any trace of their liaisons along his jaw, the column of his neck, he bears this latest mark as though it were a badge of pride. His very posture seems to be putting it on display. Taunting, daring him to say something.

He should keep walking. He had planned to keep walking.

He stops.

Ink spilled in quiet defiance, as Nanna was stamped to a chair and pen set for the next round. Though she was at leisure, she was at no luxury to heal others nor comb through the camp again for Julius— so, instead, she presumed an alert position, half-notched in case of ambush. Her heart was still pressed against porcelain, waiting out the last of her flashfire frustrations. But it was no matter. She had to make something productive of this all. To preoccupy herself, she began to sprawl a handful of potential strategies that would have served her better on the field. It was better than to be left to her thoughts.

Peering over to the bed beside her, she sent the woman who presided that space with a winning smile. Not a hint of her wrath in those twinkling eyes. "Would you like to join me? It's not as constructive breaking down a battle map alone."

"Daniel Solander

Cape Solander is named after Swedish botanist Daniel Solander (1733-1782), who accompanied naturalist and botanist Joseph Banks on HMB Endeavour from 1768-1771.

A Gifted Student

Solander studied under famous botanist, Carl Linnaeus, at Sweden's Uppsala University. Before Solander completed his studies, Linnaeus sent him to London as his representative to work at the British Museum cataloguing the natural history collections, and to promote the Linnaean classification system. This system became the internation standard for the classification of all species and is still used today.

Unfinished Business

In 1768, Joseph Banks invited Solander to join in the scientific staff on HMB Endeavour on its voyage to the South Pacific. Together, Banks and Solander collected approximately 30,000 specimens including around 1,300 species new to Western science. The number of species they collected demonstrated the need for a classification system that could cope with Earth's biodiversity.

On his return to England, Solander became Joseph Bank's secretary and librarian and went on numerous collecting expeditions including to the Isle of Wight, the western highlands of Scotland, Iceland and Wales. He was also appointed keeper of natural history at the British Museum.

Solander died of a stroke in 1782 aged only 49, leaving much of his work incomplete, unpublished or waiting on contributions from others.

A Significant Legacy

Solander made important contributions to botany through his discoveries and his meticulous categorising of the specimens he and Banks collected around the world.

As early proponents of Linnaeus's systematic biology, Bank's and Solander's work here led to Kamay Botany Bay National Park being nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Area. The national park is important both culturally and scientifically in 'The Rise of Systematic Biology' - the study of biological diversity and its origin.

This includes a taxonomic classification system for categorising organisms into related groups."
