Have to rant about Teen Wolf for a bit (anti-sterek, complaining about anti-scott mccall, pro-stiles)

Why are people upset that Sterek was never canon?? Like it's already confusing that so many people ship it like it's a normal ship. Like guys, STILES IS A CHILD, DEREK IS AN ADULT. Yeah, Stiles is an adult at the end of the show, but they met when he was like 15/16, Christ at that age I couldn't even image dating someone 17 or 18, much less 25!! (His age is a little unclear but it's around that) (and yes I know about his age recon, it's irrelevant because he was originally 19ish and that's still an adult/child relationship) That's a whole decade age gap. If they had met when stiles was already 18+, sure, still kinda weird but fine. But that's not what happened.

To put it in perspective, I bet a lot of you think the Kate and Young Derek kiss scene was gross and weird (at least hopefully you do) Google says she was about 29 when that happened and Derek was turned 15. That's a 14 year difference. Now you might be complaining, 'the sterek age gap is smaller than that!' well it's about 9ish years and that's STILL GROSS

And on young Derek, he was around Stiles' age (1-2 year difference) and it's such a drastic age difference from normal Derek, right? So if young Derek is considered a child who shouldn't be kissed by an adult, why is it ok when it's Stiles? And it also just shows how large of an age gap they have when Derek is around Stiles' age and he's literally a baby if that makes any sense.

They reconned Derek's age because if he was 19 and she was like 27-28 then he would've been 13 when they got together and she would've been 22ish. Huge pedo issue there obviously. And guess what, thats the same age gap as Sterek.

And some of you might say, 'well other shows have canon adult/child relationships!' that's true, but either it's criticized in the narrative or Pretty Little Liers (I really like that show but WTF was up with all the pedo ships???? Especially AriaxEzra) and just because a lot of things do it doesn't make the thing ok, for example, shipping Sterek.

They don't even really have any romantic chemistry, like their dynamic was funny but most of it was Derek literally hating on Stiles. Like if you're going to ship a morally dubious ship, 1) at least have it be an interesting ship? They're so boring together 🙄 and 2) own up to it!!! Most of y'all act like Derek wouldn't get thrown in jail if he was into stiles like that

Personally I like to think after some nice character development, Derek comes to see both Stiles and Scott as little brothers, but unfortunately I've become so tainted by the onslaught of inescapable sterek content that even then with a very cute, platonic relationship seems wrong, which is stupid but my brain has now blacklisted any fan content with either of them in it now...

AND DON'T GET ME STARTED ON SCOTT HATE, genuinely what is WRONG with you people?? He's the purest, sweetest character in the entire show! And sure, Stiles is more interesting as a character, but Scott is a really good protagonist. Good comparison I thought of is how in ALAB everyone is obsessed with Zuko even tho Aang is the main character. The only difference is that for some reason a big percentage of the fandom decided to shit on Scott for no reason.

Main 'reasons' I've seen:

Scott is a bad friend

- When???? Where? The only time I could kinda see that is in season 1, but think about it like this, he's 16 (A CHILD) and not only is in love for the first time, but has to deal with all the werewolf/alpha stuff that went down in that season. He's busy, he's going through it. And yeah Stiles was very involved and was doing his best to help, but Scott can't be in a million places at once. Guys, normal kids are worse friends than Scott ever was and are still good people, cause it happens sometimes. Are you constantly think about your bestie when you have a million other things going on? Probably not! And it wasn't even that bad because Scott did keep stiles in the loop 90% of the time!!! Y'all actually like Scott was Gon in the chimera ant arc 🙄

His argument with Stiles in season 5

- Was Stiles having a rough time? Yeah, absolutely. Was he in the right? Yeah. But was Scott also really going through it?? Definitely, boy was struggling. Not only does this kid have the weight of the world on his shoulders all the goddamn time, but there was the whole mess they were dealing with, Hayden was dying, he and Liam were arguing, he was having such bad anxiety his asthma was coming back... Man was not in a good headspace.

Coupled that with the very specific way that Theo lied to him (let's be honest, it really does sound like something Stiles would do for his dad), and the miscommunication of Stiles not denying that something did happen, Scott believing that it was more murder than self defense makes a lot of sense to me. And when they do finally talk it out, it's really wholesome and Scott is not only really understanding, but apologetic.

Also, again, real relationships have misunderstandings and lack of good communication all the goddamn time. This doesn't make someone a bad person or a bad friend. FICTIONAL CHARACTERS CAN HAVE FLAWS AND MAKE MISTAKES WITHOUT BEING BAD PEOPLE!!!

To the person who sent me a very long anonymous question, I will answer it here. You said certain things that I want to address, but you also said certain things I didn't want to address, so I'm extracting information here.

1. I don't "ship" Scott and Allison. I talk about Scott and Allison because it actually happened on the show. I would have liked Scott even if he never dated Allison; I would have liked Allison even if she never dated Scott. But they did, and it wasn't obsessive though it was flawed. Those flaws prevented it from lasting, and one of the best things Teen Wolf ever did was let it end.

No, "shipping" Scott and Allison doesn't do a thing for minorities. What does something for minorities is not allowing a racist fandom to attack it by using racist and sexist stereotypes, most specifically the 'obsessive, overly passionate Latino' or reducing Allison to a passive object in her own life. I've decided that it's important to me not to let fandom use socially harmful ideas to promote something that never happened.

2. You're right, I've never gotten upset when people have said that Lydia is smarter than Scott. But then again, I've never gotten upset when people have said that Stiles is smarter than Scott. Intelligence is too complex a phenomenon for that to be remotely useful in enjoying a piece of media. I've gotten upset when they've said Scott is dumb. I've gotten upset when they've called him a potato. I've gotten upset when they say he moons after girls instead of doing his homework or that he can't hope to be anything more than a nurse or a vet technician and not a doctor or an actual veterinarian.

Because they don't really care about Scott's grades or whether he's equipped to make the right calls in his battle against the villains who want to turn Beacon Hills into their own personal slaughterhouse. No, they focus on his supposed lack of intelligence to justify the fact that Stiles should be in charge or that Derek or Peter should remain alpha. They employ the "lazy, uneducated Mexican" stereotype in an attempt to erase a kind-hearted, courageous Latino hero and replace him with the nearest sassy white man.

3. Stiles was quite a bit more than the 'comic relief.' Scott had just as many jokes and pratfalls as Stiles had, and Stiles had plenty of emotional depth and angst. Your problem isn't that you want to see Stiles as more than the comic relief; your problem is that you want to see Stiles as the lead protagonist, and he's not. People like you are desperate to have something that wasn't on the screen, and every single one of those youtube videos you mentioned are focused on one thing -- taking Scott's position as lead protagonist away and giving it to someone else. Here's an idea -- why just not watch the show? If you're so offended that Scott is the heroic lead protagonist, don't watch the show. Don't read my commentary on the show. Find some other show where white men are the hands-down lead. There's plenty.

4. And the difference about Sterek? STEREK WASN'T REAL. There was no romantic relationship between Stiles and Derek. And the show didn't need one. There were good relationships and there were bad relationships and there were straight relationships and there were LGBTQIA+ relationships in actual combinations that actually happened. You don't need Sterek for representation. You don't need Sterek to make the show "better." You had Scott and Allison, and Stiles and Malia, and Scott and Kira, and Stiles and Lydia, and Mason and Corey, and Danny and Ethan, and Ethan and Jackson, and Emily and Caitlyn, and Lydia and Jackson and Derek and Braeden.

You can spend all the effort you want on daydreaming about Sterek. Have a blast! But this obscene need to make Sterek the premier relationship for Teen Wolf leads to take a huge old shit on every other actual aspect of the show. Mason and Corey were together for longer than any other romantic relationship portrayed on the show, other than Scott and Kira. If you didn't like it? That's your choice, but you don't get to say it's invalid as compared to a ship between two white men who never even expressed one ounce of sexual attraction toward each other.

Plot Twists & Plagiarism

So, I was talking with some people in my discord *cough* You should join and come talk about Sterek with us. *cough* and realized that I had some feelings that I wanted to share. I'm just copying this from what I posted there, bc I don't have the brainpower to better adjust it for tumblr: I was talking to my husband about how conflicted I feel about being a writer/about the way stuff is viewed within media as 'plagiarism' or 'stealing.' And Furthermore, how that view interacts with the recent issue we've been seeing within media re: Random Plot twists for the sake of "The shock factor."

I know that it's been a common idea/theme that people within the TW fandom (and I know this occurs in lots of big fandoms, that's part of my point) believe that things from fic or fic writers were seen by TW creators and stolen to be used for the show, without giving the Original writers/fans any credit. And I'm not trying to say that they're explicitly wrong. There's no proof either way, and it IS entirely possible that that's occurring. I think SPN is the one people think of the most, because they had an entire episode about SPN cons and used a ton of stuff from the fandom to do with ships and costume choices and headcanons without really acknowledging that they took those ideas from fans who had already created it, which left a lot of fans feeling cheated and Outright made fun of.

So, again, I'm not saying that people who believe that are Wrong, and I'm not saying that it isn't something that's actually happened before.

But.

With recent superhero movies/shows/MCU stuff, people have gotten Super upset lately because of random plot twists that got thrown in the end. I'm not gonna list them because A) i don't watch that shit so i don't know many and B) they're from the end, so they'd probably be spoilers for people. But its a valid issue.

It's incredibly frustrating as a reader to follow a show's plotline and themes and arcs, only to have everything Obliterated in the last episode or two because the creators wanted to be 'original.'

But I get why they do that?

As a writer, even just a fic writer, when I see people headcanon things or point out really obscure meta that I Already HC'd or thought about and either have a WIP about or was going to create a WIP about it, sometimes I get fucking scared.

Because of accusations like I first described. Because even if I already thought of it, if I didn't say it FIRST, but then try to present it as something from my own head, there's fear that someone will accuse me of stealing an idea from another fan.

We talk about how having a plotline that people can guess the ending to doesn't always mean it's bad, it means it makes sense. But then, if we guess the ending, and accuse people of stealing the idea when they DO use that ending, of COURSE they're going to start throwing in fucking plot twists out of the blue, because they want to avoid getting told that they took the idea from someone else.

And I know that some of the stuff is Really specific, but it's also REALLY logical. This is a show with millions and millions of fans, and millions of fics and blog posts and meta ideas. SOMEONE is going to guess the right thing eventually. That doesn't necessarily mean that it was stolen by the show, it means that fan Happened to guess it.

Jeff Davis told fans a lot earlier on that Stiles' name was polish, and hard to pronounce, which is why so many fics had about a billion polish names for him. One of them just happened to be right. It's a fitting name, since it means "sword of glory" and that's dramatic as fuck, just like some of the other names used.

Stiles' jeep being called roscoe is a fan thing, it was never confirmed within canon, even though I think some of the actors said that they liked the name. The fact that it belonged to his mom makes sense because it's an old car, he's SUPER protective of it, and his mom died when he was young. It's the same reason people guess that the Camaro was Laura's or that Derek's jacket was his dad's.

And while it does seem suspicious that the show had a storyline that'd been written about before...it's been written about because it's a Very Popular storyline. Tons of shows, especially ones dealing with magic like TW do the plotline of someone being completely forgotten and having that One Person who remembers them bc True Love or bc Family. I know Stargate has an episode on it, and I'm pretty sure Buffy did too (and davis said buffy was part of his inspiration for the show). So did Charmed. And since TW is established as a show that pulls from a bunch of real, often celtic/nordic myths, using the ghost riders Also makes sense. Even having Lydia be the one to remember him makes sense because she was framed as a love interest for Stiles since the start of TW, even if we weren't fans of it/it wasn't done well.

Again, I'm really not trying to say that people who believe it was taken from fans are Definitely wrong. I won't pretend that there haven't been instances where it Really Did Happen with other shows/media bc it HAS, and TW fans have every right to be suspicious of it.

But I personally am torn, because while I find it incredibly frustrating when we get stupid plot twists out of the blue, I also have the urge to do that with my own FICS bc I saw someone randomly guess the ending/plot point and I'm terrified that if I continue to write it the way I had planned, I'll get accused of stealing the idea from them. We can't simultaneously ask writers/creators to give us logical/reasonable plotlines, and then accuse them of stealing them when they do and we randomly guess what was going to happen.

Just went to the Anti-Fjorjester tag and I gotta tell ya...

I mean, I don't do ships in the fandom, but it's nice when the cast has fun, and I think ships are fun for them.

For me, this whole situation was just entertaining because I've never seen someone get as red as Travis did in that span of time.

I love the cast so much, and I respect their decisions with their characters.

Going into the Fjorjester tag and seeing everyone happy and squealing was fun because people are happy.

Going into the Anti-Fjorjester tag and seeing everyone pissed off, and not only about the character choices, but also at the cast for things like... This one person was mad at Liam because they said he talked too much and couldn't RP... Like, what?

Leave them alone. It's a game. If you can get generally upset about a game that is based off of imagination and imaginary relationships, then you are the Toxic fan that no one likes.

You know how to fix this, if you don't like what happened in canon? Write fanfics, make drawings, have discussions like Sterek or... Well kind of Destiel, but you do have options that don't involve being an asshole in the fandom.

Clearly, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but jinkies, it's make believe guys, you don't have to be so pressed about it.

Anon with the question about hurting Stiles here: You seem to have misunderstood me. I am not being passive agressive, and I am not lying in any way. What I said should be taken at face value. I have been in the fandom since 2011, btw. Like I said, I have seen this being trope done a bunch of recently and I am simply trying to understand "why?". That is it. Nothing more, no ulterior motive.+

and like I said, I actually like cheating Derek (or just cheating in general) stories. I am trying to understand why people do it with Derek cheating on Stiles so much. And you seemed like the most approachable of the authors who write a lot of it, so I thought to ask it of you. That is it. Nothing more, nothing less. Just curiosity. Sometimes people are being honest about what they say and that is that.

It was not my intention to hurt or upset anyone. Just to try to understand something. I wasn't trying to policy anything or make rules for how or what you should write. Like I said multiple times, it's your stories, do with them what you want.

Well, I apologize if I took your asks the wrong way. To answer your question, I think people just find Derek being a cheater really hot in smut. It happens with Derek/Stiles mainly because Sterek is the biggest ship that Derek is connected with and it's familiar to people. And the more people write about it, the more people get inspired by it and want to write their own.

I personally only got into it a few years ago when I read a fic where Derek started cheating on Stiles behind his back. It made me want to write my own, so I did. And then I was surprised to find out that a lot of other people also liked the trope and I started getting requests/prompts to write more stories like it.

Another possible reason why it's always Derek being the one cheating (and it's just total speculation) but Derek's a pretty noble guy in canon, so it's hot to see a noble guy do not so noble things. Plus, Derek is physically hot and writing him getting with other guys is enjoyable to visualize.

Again, I apologize if I misread your comments. I love Sterek & I'm defensive when it comes to letting Sterek shippers write what makes them happy. I don't want people to feel discouraged or get critiqued about writing something just because some people aren't into it.

Sterek I think is...the most obvious LOL That’s all I talk about or write about. I love giving them new worlds to explore in sigh. (I’ve seen a few sporadic at best episodes of Teen Wolf. The gag is? Sterek was just a total crack ship, it NEVER had potential of becoming canon or even any basis whatsoever aside from "these are the two closest white boys in a show with a brown Latino lead". That ship and fandom is a damn cancer, it *never* should have become so all consuming the way it did. And that fandom takes pride in straight up denying the truth, there's an entire sect that stopped watching around season 2 and ran with their own self serving narrative

On one hand, I want to say good for them. The fact that they've all had their heads buried in the sand for so long and stuck by their guns when it comes to ignoring canon and pretending the fandom problems that they helped create (and still perpetuate) never happened is impressive. It's a bit delusional, but damn impressive.

For the record, there's nothing wrong with ignoring canon if you disagree with it. Hell, I do that all the time. The problem comes when they twist canon to suit their fanon and demand that everyone respect it as the new canon because they said so. The problem comes when they refuse to except any kind of responsibility for the negative stereotypes of gay men they're supporting by pushing a relationship with such a significant age gap. The problem lies with their inability to take a step back and look at (or even admit) their racism in the complete erasure of Scott McCall from his own narrative, stealing his more admirable traits and giving them to Stiles to make him seem more likeable.

And that is what they did, whether they want to admit it or not. They stole Scott's innate goodness and gave it to Stiles, making sure that every character either loved or focused on him while labeling Scott as the "bad friend". Characters that barely gave Stiles the time of day, such as Danny or Lydia or Deaton or even Peter or their precious Derek, who were all focused solely on Scott, in their fanon are focused on Stiles for those same reasons, despite those traits not being within his character at all. And I'm not making that up. The sheer number of these people who think it should have been Stiles who had been turned have no actual clear concept of his character, because he was all for killing people and fully embracing the werewolfness of the situation

Despite their claims that Scott was both boring and yet somehow still a mean and abusive friend, while Stiles was this beacon of light that everyone gravitated toward, it shows how much they did like Scott and how much they didn't like Stiles, because all they did was switch their personalities in fanon.

Scott being obsessed with Allison at the expense of his friend is really just Stiles and his obsession with Lydia, using Scott and his lycanthropy to try and find out if she liked him when she barely seemed to know he existed. Scott being a moron who would be lost without his best friend, is really just Stiles' inability to focus on any one thing at any point in time without Scott being their to remind his friend what's going on. Scott's useless in the grand scheme of things, particularly in the finale fights, and relies solely on Stiles to save his ass is... well, there isn't a direct comparison to that one, because one of Scott's biggest strengths is his ability to use everyone's strengths to defeat a common enemy. I mean, watch Master Plan. Scott outplayed everyone!

This whole concept of "Stiles in Scott's clothes" just proves that they actually like Scott, but because he's brown, they can't accept that, so they transfer his positive traits to Stiles, who is more appropriate at being the hero for the simple fact that he's white... oh, and he's snarky. Mustn't forget that. That's how the fandom knows he's one of them.

You were right in calling them a cancer, because we've watched as they've metastasized into other fandoms, such as Star Wars, or Marvel. Despite their claims to the contrary, I'm sure they're all the same group of people, because the pattern is obvious.

I mean, just yesterday, the stans who jumped into my one ask said over and over that you can't compare what John (Boyega) went through to what Tyler (Posey) went through, which is weird because it's almost the exact same thing. The complete disregard of the canon hero of color in favor of propping up the nearest white guy, in this case Kylo Ben and Stiles, and giving them Finn's and Scott's attributes and even plot lines. Hell, it even extends past the movie/show and into the real world, where they're accusing these men of being toxic and stalkers and how they hope their careers fail. "You're just jealous because Adam/Dylan have a career and John/Tyler don't."

Like, word for word, the things they say are practically identical.

And don't even get me started on the woobification factor, because then we'll have to bring up the Tony stans and how they paint him as such an innocent child manipulated by others, the same way they claim Kylo and Stiles are. I mean, if I have to see "Tony is (X) coded" one more time I just might scream.

What started out as a minor, but loud portion of one fandom has spread like the plague in that these stans, across multiple fandoms feel entitled to act like this and still expect everyone to kiss their asses because "they're the only ones contributing to fandom".

To conclude, I'll say again, it's not a problem if fans want to ignore canon because they don't like it, but when we have situations like this, you have to ask why they're here in the first place? If canon upsets you this much that you made up your own, what character do you actually stan, because that's not the Stiles from the show that they all claim to live so much?

Fandom Talk

So for anyone who’s followed me for a while you’ll know I’m not a content creator (bless those that are, you are amazing) and I’m not a lengthy talking poster but something happened today and I need to vent a little.

I don’t like fandom wars and I tend to stay away and unfollow anyone that gets involved in them. I’m happy for people to discuss the pros and cons of their fandom or another fandom as long as its discussion! 

But today while on another platform I came across a “fan” who actually said “I want revenge against celebrity X”. Like what the hell?!?! You want revenge? Isn’t that a little extreme? Pray tell, why would that be?

Turns out their reasons were the following: 1. They didn’t like their music. 2. They didn’t like their acting. 3. Celebrity X was in too many ads. 4. The fans of Celebrity X were bad and mean and were doing worse things (?!?!?). 5. Celebrity X was talking too much time away from the OP’s chosen celebrity.

Like what the hell! Those are you reasons! Pretty sure there are bigger things in this world to worry about.

Now normally I wouldn’t engage to this but I really felt like this person was just being far to extreme for such petty reasons.

I asked how do they think they have the right to try and destroy a persons career, to make them loose jobs simply because you don’t like them. Its horrendous, it’s bullying! You don’t know this person, you have no idea what they are like in real life. If you don’t like their music, don’t listen to it. If you don’t like their acting, don’t watch the movie. I mean I don’t like Justin Bieber but I don’t go around telling people not to buy his music or going to every website possible and down rating everything to do with him. Finally I pointed out that true fans should always respect other fandoms, they should support their chosen celebrity or fandom without trashing other fandoms.

The OP’s response: Well they brought it on themselves by being sexist and racist.

Wait, what? Now this blew me away. It came so far out of left field. What the hell?!? There has never been anything I have seen that suggests Celebrity X is in anyway racist or sexist.

I couldn’t believe what I was reading. It was just mind blowing. That a person disliked someone that much that they were seeing such negative things that weren’t there, that they were will to spread negative things with no proof. That they, as a fan, were willing to go and do actual negative actions out there in the internet world that would have real life implications! I didn’t engage any further, I’d said my piece and I was happy with that but there was nothing I could ever have said to the OP that would make them act in any rational way.

I should know better. I lived through various fandom wars over the years from Sterek, Buffy’s Angel vs Spike, Destiel, something in the Harry Potter verse, Stargate ships, internal fandom wars of shows, different show fandoms fighting against each other. People going into tags and trashing them.

And what’s it for? Nothing! It doesn’t improve the fandom, it doesn’t make one ship better than another, it doesn’t make one fandom better than another, it doesn’t make support for you chosen celebrity or groups of celebrities better than others. 

It just makes people angry or upset, it takes the joy out of fandom. It ruins it!

There is enough shit in this world that you don’t need to heap it on something that brings joy to people.

 @ilackallhonour​ has tagged me in this, and usually I’m really bad at actually joining in, but this one really got me thinking back on all my old fandoms and hyperfixations. I didn’t really do shipping until a few years ago, might have something to do with my recently discovered ace-ness :’)

I always had fantasies that I was part of the world of that particular hyperfixation at time. Of course very heroic and awesome, and very close to my favorite character. Alas, real life is disappointing in that regard.

Merlin/Arthur, I never watched the show when it first came out. Mostly because I can be a bit stubborn and when a lot of people keep telling me that I should totally watch something because I will love it, I refuse to watch it. Don’t know why I’m like that. Turned out, I totally did love it, and binged it like crazy. Also shipped Arthur/Merlin like crazy. Was really disappointed in the ending, and thus, turned to fic. For me, when I’m really obsessed with a show or book I just cannot let go and will read fic until eventually my fixation dies out.

The Umbrella Academy, I don’t really ship anyone, except maybe bromances, and their sibling relationships (Five and Vanya <3 Klaus and Diego <3<3). Man, I love this show, I binged it when it first came out, immediately watched again, got other people to watch it, and watched it again so I could talk to them about it some more. Of course turned to fic, but got a bit eww-ed out, because there was a lot of shipping going on and I didn’t dig it (too each their own, though).

Black Sails, uuuugh I can’t with this show. @Ilackallhonour actually got me curious about it because all the stuff she posted and reblogged. And damn, was it a life changer. I’ve always had a bit of a weird obsession with ships and that time period, but more from Dutch, and VOC perspective. Still, the setting immediately hooked me in, but I really stayed for the story, the characters…Silver. Oh damn. And Silver/Flint, oh double damn.

Sterek. Really, I can’t even say I liked Teen Wolf that much, although I did enjoy the first few seasons. But I stayed for every glimpse of Sterek I could catch. The first time Derek shoved Stiles into the wall I was screaming at my TV, NO WAY there are no people shipping that. Dude, that’s so canon it hurts! But well, the show turned into a big dumpster fire, and I found the online fandom. Got an AO3 account just so I could bookmark and comment and give out kudos so my favorite Sterek fic. And there are tons of fics. I can admit it, I was an addict. I can’t go on AO3 without drowning back in fandom hell, so I keep off it. Really, it was a problem. I was reading fic ALLLL the time. When I should’ve been working, sleeping, socializing, etc. Followed so many Sterek blogs on Tumblr, but wanted my sanity back so unfollowed them all. Sorry @andavs​, I still love your blog, and your art, and your fics sooooo much, but it was too big of a problem *sigh*

Harry Potter, of course. My favorite character was Fred, and got very upset when people tried to convince me he was exactly the same as George. NO HE ISN’T! He’s the idea guy!! Lol. It’s been a while since I’ve read the books, and not sure how much of that is true anymore. Back then I didn’t really do shipping, but now I’m a Drarry shipper, haha. The fics are just so goooood.

Gilmore Girls, duuuude. This show shaped my life. Every time I’m one a re-watch I’m like…oh thát’s where I got that from! I copied character traits and sense of humor and stuff into my own personality. Didn’t like the new episodes much, but that won’t destroy my love for the Gilmores.

Veronica Mars, same as with Gilmore Girls really. Huge impact on my life. Love the snarkiness, and yeah did have some ships in there. Actually did like the new season (though I hated the movie), but they did LoVe dirty man.

I should put Supernatural in this list too, although I feel like I abandoned the show and am not a true fan. I was obsessed with it for so long though. Those first seasons were so great, I loved the relationship between Dean and Sam (in a platonic, totally brotherly way because I do not like incest-y things) and the normal everyday hunting things part of the show. But than all the demons and angels en Gods came and I got a bit tired of the endless cycle of dying and being brought back to life, evil turned to good turned to evil turned to good thing. I’m of the opinion that shows should have an end. Just like three or four seasons, tops. Just finish it with a good, solid ending. Don’t drag it along until it dies an ugly death.

And now unto some total different things, that shaped my childhood. Hard to find a GIF for these books, but what is fandom without some cool art ^_^

 Tomorrow when the war began, by John Marsden. I was obsessed with these books, and read them over and over again, even now I’m not tired of them and could get lost in them before I finished the first page.

Wheel of Time, Robert Jordan. This series really got me into the fantasy genre back then. I had no idea of any of the fantasy cliché’s, or Arthur legends yet, so I wasn’t tired yet of all the same old tropes. I find it a lot harder now to read them, but back then I saved money to be able to buy them as soon as a new one came out, and re-read the entire series up till that point before I read the new one.

Cats the (broadway) musical. Me and my little sister watched the movie version of this show over and over again, every time focused on a different cat. We knew all the lyrics, we knew all the cats. We knew every little thing there was of them to know. We named our black cat (we ..I demanded a black cat) Misty, for Mistyfollees (she’s a girl you see, so we couldn’t name her Mistofollees). I even wrote some fic for it, haha.

(note: I tried really hard to find another GIF but there’s none) Elfquest, oooh Elfquest. This was my truest and biggest obsession, I think. I created my own elf characters, joined online RPG forums to write stories about our own characters, met up with other fans, dressed like a favorite character. A lot of the friends I have now, I met at those forums. I’m still low-key trying to collect the better-looking English paperbacks of the series, but am in no hurry to finish it, and don’t really read them anymore anyway. And my ship? Skywise/anyone, haha. I love Skywise so damn much. And his and Cutter’s relationship is everything (who’s Leetah? Fuck Leetah).

Queerbaiting is the practice of hinting at, but then not actually depicting, a same-sex romantic relationship between characters in a work of fiction, mainly in film or television. The potential romance may be ignored, explicitly rejected or made fun of.the part left out of this is that it's an perceived act done by writers, showrunners, etc in the hopes to lure in the lgbqt audience.

What some people confuse is the fact that a show can have Queer characters and still be guilty of queerbaiting. Because of the factors of shipping, the writers usually choose to bait with a character the Queer audience can relate to and highly like and bond then with another character who they then never intend to consummate the relationship between but will also play up the romantic implications between. Shipping gets fans to invest more quickly and often more deeply - so this is done often. A great example of this is Teen Wolf who baiting fans with Sterek but gave us a few background Queer characters that had low screen-time, dialogue ques, and sometimes absolutely no story arc other than their sexuality.

No matter if this fandom wants to believe it or not - The Magicians are guilty of the traits that cater to Queerbaiting. We don't see a romantic relationship depicted between Queliot in fact all of that happens off screen. There's a lot implied but not shown, hinted at enough for fandom to come to their own conclusion but shadowed with deniability. In 3x05 we did not see Eliot and Q have a romantic relationship for 50 years. It can and has been argued that what they had was a deep relationship but a friendship and family that doesn't embark on sexuality. In 4x05 we don't see the depiction of a romantic relationship - we actually get a denial of Q's fanon sexuality. Yes the narrative can be read as Eliot's biggest regret is rejecting Quentin on a romantic aspect - if you erase everything else from the episode. Because really the arc is heavily about Eliot causing people he loves pain which is not solidified to romantic relations. There's huge no homo aspects in this episode even as they say things like love and let's give it a try. Theres nothing explicit about Queliot - he'll not even Q's own sexuality.

There's a difference between ship tease and queerbaiting. Ship tease depicts the relationship - it tension is built of the yearning, the want, but the can't go there for whatever reason. All things that Queliot lacks because even when they have a moment - like I said the show mucks it up with a no homo by stressing the 'friends' - verbally and visually. We've seen Q want and yearning and sexual interest (outside of engaging in sex) when it comes to Alice, and yet with Eliot it's alway preluded with some kind of influence - emotional magic, alcohol, no one else possible around, emotional residue - all are which can and do play as deniability to his attraction to Eliot.

You do not have to wait until the end of a project to know if you're being queerbaited or not because it's all in the depiction. These characters, their sexuality, and the relationships they come in contact with are done in such a way to drag lgbqt audience in but to maintain the majority (the heterosexuals) and not upset them. Those there for the lgbqt rep are more invested - they will keep watching as long as there's even a hint of the promise possibly being fulfilled. They will ignore all signs that warn them disappointment. They will fill in holes and complete plot points for the writers of it plays into what they want - it's what the writers bank on. That's why there's so much implication and no follow through. You don't need to follow through on what the audience will complete for you. They know this hunger keeps them emotionally invested and that fandom feeds the individual's hope. It goes on too long and the fandom becomes bitter watchers - but watchers all the same - they want that imagery so bad that the creators and writers and even the actors sometimes can talk down to them, ridicule them for believing in something they should've known they were never gonna get anyway.

Queerbaiting can change into ship tease and then into a canon romantic relationship but that shit never really happens but it's the hope that keeps people there.

I def see the Magicians fandom bending over backwards to ignore the issues and the problems with the show, Queliot, and the entirety of queerbaiting on the show. Y'all will ignore the people who point out those issues and analyze exactly why they are a problem and then hop on the post that simplify and ignore all the bs...

Look at this way - these were the same people telling y'all you had nothing to worry about with the trailers...and we see how wrong they were about that...🤷🏾‍♀️

You can come up with any name - call it any old thing - but at the core there's an issue with how Queliot is depicted, how it is treated in the relation to heterosexual relationships on the show and denying the warning signs don't make you wiser, better, or more positive than those who demand better from a show where this same relationship was used to lure in viewship. We as a community (the lgbqt audience) and the shippers not only deserve to have the promise acknowledged but also have it facilitated in a manner in which is also fair to us and our representation.

Do wincest fans do this?

So @cross-roads-blues is very upset because I called her/him out for using the main tags like toilet paper.  The problem is that other fandoms don't do this.  Wincest fans don't do this.  If you say wincest, anyone with a brain in their head knows that you are talking about Sam and Dean.  You cant be talking about Jody and Donna.  So wincest fans don't tag Sam and Dean because others using the tag don't want to see ship nonsense.  Sterek, stucky, Johnlock, as far as I can tell, they came up with unique pairing names just so that they can keep their shippy filth out of other people's eyes, so don't tell tall tales. 

And you think I am being aggressive?  Either you were raised like a rose petal or don't know the meaning of aggression.  This is aggression:

So, I’m starting this episode right after finishing the last one, and I’m still kinda riled up from that bullshit. Let’s get to pissing me off and breaking my heart then. Blood/gore mention warnings for this episode.

Let’s just jump right in:

Starting right off with forcing myself into putting the tag in. Scott literally just listened to his mother say that giving this woman something to lessen the pain of her injuries could complicate things and make it harder to treat her. This is like an important medical thing. While yes, it’s really upsetting that she would need to keep being in pain, she needs to be able to identify and explain what exactly she’s feeling to the doctor who is going to be arrive really soon (though I have no idea why the nurses aren’t able to get these people set up. That’s what they did with me? I didn’t see a doctor for like an hour, but they didn’t make me sit in the fucking waiting room before dealing with the blood.) Her pain level will have a direct effect on how quickly she’s seen. This moment is meant to show Scott being soft-hearted, but with the doctor only ten minutes away, he could literally be making this woman’s life a whole lot worse by taking away her pain right now. There is a reason why after I was given pain killers for my surgery I wasn’t allowed to be near any heavy objects. Her pain is keeping her from irritating her wound. She could fuck herself up if she stops responding to the signals her body is trying to send her. This is not the right way to make Scott look kind. He looks like an idiot who doesn’t even listen to his nurse mom.

I’m actually agreeing with Scott on this one. I have no idea how medically accurate what melissa just did was, but it look pretty damn cool.

I swear, like ninety percent of what the ‘adults’ in this show say is ‘go back to school.’ ‘shouldn’t you be in school’ yadda yadda. Like, they want so badly to write the teens as though they never have to go to class, so they just make them constantly skip and ignore that these are fucking teenagers who would never be able to get out of school that easily, and they handwave it with someone occasionally going ‘hmm, weird that they aren’t in school’ and then just ignoring it? Truancy is like a THING that you can get in major trouble for. At least Boyd and Isaac called in sick. You know how you could have avoided all this class bullshit? PUT THE FUCKING SEASON DURING THE SUMMERTIME DUMBASSES.

It just hurts seeing Stiles beg for Scott not to make him tell his dad, and then turn right around and admit that it’s not okay for him to let other people suffer just because it scares him that he might lose his only parent. Like, he walks into that sacrifice with eyes wide fucking open and it hurts.

I’m not talking about these dumb sex scenes anymore. I’m so tired of them.

OKay, can we talk about the fire alarm thing though? It sounds like a jokey kind of thing with Aiden teasing Lydia about wanting to leave during the fire alarm but... Remember how Lydia was haunted by Peter’s burnt corpse? How she can hear the cries of the dead, and how she went wandering into the crumbling remains of the Hale house? There’s every chance that Lydia remembers the fire through Peter’s eyes. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was forever freaked by fire alarms.

Man, Cora and Lydia, together? The sass involved? If I didn’t ship Allydia so hard, I’d totally ship Cora and Lydia.

ONce again, I wanna point out that AIDEN IS A MURDERER. Literally all it would take is someone Explaining to Lydia that he is serial killer and she’d never touch him again.

Cora and Stiles together? I’m loving it. I just, wanna point out that when Scott showed up Cora couldn’t have given less of a shit. But here....Cora doesn’t remotely question Stiles’ authority here. She immediately goes along with it and when he tells her to let go of Cora she does. Even though she has no real reason to. When she asks about the spirit board, it’s a legit question and she doesn’t argue or make fun.

PLus there’s the whole ‘Well do you know any spirits” which straight up just confirms for me that ghosts and shit are real in this universe. I trust the Hales as lore sources and Cora’s matter-of-fact tone is good enough for me.

okay, i’ll admit it, i do actually kinda like the camera angle through the map, with the blacklight lighting up the symbols (though the symbols flash on and off a little too fast). It’s kinda cool.

It’s one thing if Morrell is feeding them information, but she wouldn’t have KNOWN about this! This was a good plan and there’s NO REASON the Alphas should’ve known what Boyd, Isaac, and Derek were doing! What the fuck?

I know that it’s meant to be setting up the cora/stiles thing, but I love that she doesn’t hesitate to touch him, and that when she stops him it’s with a very quiet “stop.” She’s really gentle with him, which is just fucking nice. Werewolves taking care to be gentle with Stiles is like...nice.

Since when did Scott know about the plan with Boyd and Isaac? Since when did Stiles know? Is Boyd seriously texting Cora while Derek and Kali are fighting, or did he text her as soon as the power was cut?

is this the first time we see a werewolf bounce off the mountain ash? I mean, I think so, but we also see Peter in S1 try to get past some. There’s no glowing when he comes into contact with the shield. It’s the same with Isaac and Erica in s2. I mean...I guess they’re just trying to upgrade the ash stuff? I gotta say though, I kinda prefered when there were no special effects. It seemed cooler when literally the only thing making it work was belief and having this totally invisible barrier that Peter couldn’t cross. It was cool.

Why...why does Isaac turn and yell ‘wait’ to Boyd when he was the one running forward to Julia? I am confusion.

I wanna point out here, that this fight between Derek and Kali makes sense for once. Him losing makes sense. We know that the Alphas are much older than they look, or at least Kali, Deucalion and Ennis were. Aiden and Ethan don’t show up in that flashback. ANyway, Kali’s probably in her thirties or forties. SHe’s much older than Derek and she’s been fighting for a lot longer, not to mention fighting to kill.

Seriously, someone get my boy a quarterstaff to knock her feet away.

I really really don’t understand this stuff. Why is it whenever people (I mean Derek, because it’s literally always Derek) get forced to use their werewolf claws/teeth (because again I cannot believe this is happening more than once) he for some reason can’t just...shift back? Retract his claws and fangs? Derek has amazing control, he should totally have been able to do it. With the venom it made sense, he was paralyzed. But now??

What exactly was the fucking point of having Scott break the mountain ash barrier, just to have the sheriff show up and shoot Deaton down? That was literally useless.

also, Noah is an amazing shot. Hot damn.

ALSO. LIterally all this info about true alphas is being whispered to Scott when he’s all alone? How the fuck am i supposed to trust that deaton even ever said that shit to Scott? He could totally be lying about it.

WHAT KIND OF TOTAL BULLSHIT BACKWARDS ASS PLOTLINE IS THIS? After half the season being about Deucalion attacking Derek and trying to get him into the pack, suddenly “Deucalion isn’t after Derek, he’s after you” WHAT? THat’s the STUPIDEST LAZIEST SHIT I’VE EVER SEEN.

and to end my rant BOYD SHOULD NOT HAVE DIED. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? PETER STUCK HIS ENTIRE HAND THROUGH DEREK”S CHEST IN SEASON 1 WHIL IN HIS ALPHA FORM AND THREW HIM INTO A WALL AND DEREK SURVIVED JUST FINE. WHAT IS THIS NONSENSE???

Final Thoughts: No. No, no, no no, no, and no. The ‘plotline’ of this episode is literally like fifteen things that have nothing to do with each other.

Admittedly, there were a few nice moments. Cora, Lydia, and Stiles was an awesome trio. Boyd, Isaac, and Derek was an awesome trio. The sheriff? Amazing. Melissa? A fucking hero. Danny, a genius saint.

All in all, I’m going to tear this episode to shreds in order to rewrite it. Get fucked, Davis.
