What are your thoughts on fabian and riz's friendship dynamic? I love them sm :')

oh man they’re so fun

Fabian does consider Riz to be his best friend but isn’t as good at articulating that as all his other friends are so he doesn’t really say it. But the rare occasions he does mean a lot to Riz.

As much as the Hangman openly hates when Riz rides on him, I think Fabian goes out of his way to drive past Riz’s office on the way to school and gives himself enough time to go in and drag Riz out if he sees the light is still on. Because he knows Riz hates missing school despite how close he comes to it almost daily.

Since everything that happened on Leviathan, Riz will most often attack an enemy that Fabian is in melee with. He’s still dealing with the guilt of not being there to help Fabian when he needed help the most so he unconsciously (or consciously, I’m not sure) attempts to do that every chance he gets.

They do still use the chat that’s just them and Gorgug that they made for the first time in Boys’ Night. Mostly it’s Fabian saying “Riz could you please explain to me what the fuck Adaine is talking about when you get a chance. I stopped listening for a second and now I’m baffled.” But they do have an insane meme “competition” going where they will send memes (usually edited to be about their specific situations) back and forth and whichever ones Gorgug interacts with are winners. Gorgug is unaware of this rule.

as someone with it - tourettic adaine!

bracing herself when she feels prelimanary urge to tic, trying so hard to suppress but also defiant about the fact that theyre involuntary. hates when anyone outside the bad kids notices or comments (the group makes up nicknames for her most common tics) her parents thinking shes being weird or 'freakish' until jawbone helps her get diagnoses.

snapping at people who assume that the tics are on purpose but also snapping at people (post freshman year) who think everything is a tic - "no that wasnt a tic i want you to fuck off"

adaine tics a lot more noticeably when she's anxious - she grimaces and jerks her head, sometimes makes noises, but they're mostly more prominent when she's anxious or having panic attacks because shes better at hiding them usually, as her parents used to snap at her to "stop twitching". she thinks of it as sneezing*, where she can hold it in for a while, until shes out of sight and she can tic. due to this, she never got diagnosed.

when she moved in with jawbone, it took a while before he gathered the courage to ask about her tics. she brushed it off as a nervous habit, something silly, made a few jokes about her parents' awfulness, and pretty much let it fall into silence. jawbone respected her privacy. that night, adaine fantasy googled twitching disorders, blinking problems, facial disorders, etc**. about an hour later, she walked downstairs to where jawbone and sandra-lynn were making dinner and asked if she could pull jawbone aside. they stepped into the living room and she quietly told him her speculation. she couldn't stop tic-ing as she told him and she could barely get her words out. jawbone told her she was very brave for coming to him and immediately made an appointment.

slowly but surely, adaine gets more vocal about her mental/health needs. her parents taught her there was something wrong with her, something she could fight and beat out. that, as it turns out, is a lie. still, after all shes been through mental health wise, she has a particular sore point for "haha im overstimulated/ticcing/having a panic attack" jokes, as well as people at school gawking at her like they're waiting for her to tic. still, it's better than hiding it. also, she has a bunch of friends now (and a formerly-evil sister) who will no-questions-asked curse and/or punch anyone who bothers her.

absolutely anon! i don't have a full analysis since i'm waiting for part 2 of the finale to drop before i make one (still holding out hope for that rat grinder revivication) so instead have some headcanons while we all wait for the finale together

the crush was absolutely real. freshman year oisín thought adaine was the coolest thing since sliced bread but was always too nervous to talk to her. post shatterstar, that crush got warped into bitter resentment over adaine never noticing him, but somewhere deep down he still just wants her to think hes cool

the first person adaine went to talk to her new crush about was riz, hence his deep hatred for oisín, a dude he's never talked to. riz was super supportive, albeit a little uncomfortable, and as soon as adaine turned away he started crafting an intricate revenge plot in case oisín ever broke adaine heart. he's disappointed, but not surprised, that he has to use it

part of the reason adaine was so hurt about the heel-turn was the fact that this crush actually made her feel normal for once. sprinkling in some of my aroace adaine agenda, but for the first time ever she thought she found someone that could actually make her feel something romantic, the way a "proper" high schooler should. unsurprisingly, after this is all over, adaine goes back to riz to talk about it

the little apology in the cafeteria was genuine. oisín wasn't going to at first, but when he overheard adaine defending him despite having no reason to do so, something other than rage and resentment broke through for the first time in a while. he wasn't just apologizing for the cafeteria, but for everything he had already done and was about to do

aaaaaaand if oisín survives, their senior year is TENSE. adaine is hurt, and even though oisín apologized at the end of junior year, she's still on guard around him, waiting for everything to be another big joke on her yet again. oisín on the other hand still has that crush, and is doing his damnedest to give her the space she needs while also doing his best to make up for everything he did

not really, but I suppose that’s just a difference of opinion. I do think that gorgug’s nightmare sequence was one of the weakest, especially with how it shifted topics (being dead, small spaces, not being able to escape a stereotype, because if any of these had been expanded on that would’ve been great), but I do think a lot of gorgug’s character revolves around feeling in-between, or too much one thing and not another and trying to close that gap. The best one for me was deffo the sphinx tho, I interpreted it as not *just* about him being dumb, but rather like. You’re big and dumb and strong and your main job is getting angry and hitting shit with an axe. You went to a community of gnomes and they gave you a better axe, and you loved it. You are uniquely dumb, unlike those who have come before you, because you cannot solve a specific kind of puzzle while a sphinx talks at you. You are the reason your parents cut contact, and from the beginning you were unsuited for their home. Your extended family predicted that you would grow to know only rage, and here you are, a barbarian. You, from this perspective, are not proving them wrong.

I do think that that whole sequence does reveal that he’s afraid of like. Being that stereotype? And then going yeah sure I’m stupid eat me, then moving forward and clawing your way into understanding anyways

I did really love a lot of the topics his sequence brought up. Like I've read some incredibly well-written fanfics that covered the ways that claustrophobia, and imposter syndrome, and being dead have affected him. But like you said, if they had just honed in on at least one, rather than hopping back and forth, it could have done so much for that section. Cuz, personally, I don't feel like we saw Gorgug be significantly affected by any of those. At least not in a way that felt complete and satisfying.

I really like what you said about his character being "in-between". I totally agree. Kinda circles back to how his parents trying to help him calm his rage was actually stifling him.

Your family needs you to calm down; you've broken another bedchairdoorappliance. Your teacher wants you to rage; he says anger is good but you don't understand. You sing to try and calm yourself, you're always trying to be kind to others; they only use it to hurt you more and all you can do is get angry back. Your friends need you to rage. You don't have the power to protect them socially, but this you can do. You try not to rage outside of a fight, but.... they don't seem to be that bothered when you do. In fact, you watch them provoke physical confrontation when they're mad on many occasions.

I don't think Gorgug is, or would ever be, afraid of being a "stereotype". Like I don't think he gives a shit about the stereotype that orcs/half-orcs/barbarians only know anger and destruction. I think he's afraid of being a self-fulfilling prophecy of all the things people say that he is. Stupid, mindless, destructive, etc. To pull from what you said here (which it wont let me copy paste on mobile god fucking damnit)

"Stereotype" for sure applies to his racist extended family. They fucking breathe stereotypes like oxygen. Rings back a bit to the start of fhjy to me. That dread of seeing the email of school starting back up again, and the terrible sinking pit in your stomach of avoidance, because the time has come to really unpack all that. There was something specific Zac said in his little Gorgug recap before the season started that was about, like, the dread of having to figure out who the fuck you're gonna be when everyone around you seems to have their shit together. That. That hit hard lmao but the experience that he's covered is very true to Gorgug, I think.

vivka vileshade is a fantasy high oc i created (and then got carried away with) when trying to pad out my headcanons about max durden's adventuring party!

she's a human rogue, with the subclass of assassin.

she's from the baronies, specifically a short lived province called kartova. her father, ermolai kartov, was the first sovereign of kartova (and managed to rule, in grand total, thirteen years). the vileshade clan is a legendary clan of assassins in the baronies; they're responsible for far more of the regions tumultuous political history than can be credibly traced back to them. a neighboring king enlisted the clan to kill the kartov royal line. ignato vileshade, an incredibly accomplished assassin, was assigned to the task. he killed ermolai and his wife yeva the dread, but instead of killing vivka as well and returning to his patron for his pay, his pilfered the kartovan treasury and ran away with the child and her nurse, matya. vivka lived in the baronies on the run, being trained by ignato between the ages of eight and fourteen, at which point ignato discovered the solesian offer of amnesty. he applied for citizenship, accepted the total amnesty, and settled their little makeshift family in elmville where vivka started to attend aguefort adventuring academy.

generally speaking, vivka is very blasé about her life story. whenever prodded, she insists that it's a pretty typical upbringing for someone from the baronies. it's very much this meme:

she's definitely odd. her interests lean macabre, but she's also got the entitled holdovers of being a literal princess for the first eight years of her life. but she's also so loyal! i plan on her (along with the rest of max's party) playing at least a small part in the durdawn fic i'm working on,,, assuming that it ever actually gets written, but here's a snippet to give you an idea of her vibe:

Do you happen to have any Adaine and Aelwyn headcannons you can share?

damn they’re literally so… wow.

It takes them truly so long to build the bunk beds. They, admittedly, forget two important things when they start: 1) that they have magic and 2) that they could look up instructions online. After staring at everything for far too long they admit defeat and go ask Jawbone for help. He is also useless. In the end it’s Sandra Lynn who helps the three of them work out what to do, and Aelwyn and Adaine quietly wonder if that’s what moms are supposed to do. They let Sandra Lynn in a bit more after that.

They both just take a while to sit in the same spaces and do nothing right after Aelwyn moves in. Kind of like when you introduce cats to one another. They both knew they love each other and wanted to be happy to spend time together, but it was hard for them to not hit the same strides right away. So they sat there and forced themselves to remember that they are a team. And can help each other. And they continue to do it now, quietly working on things individually, in the same space, happy to spend some time together. It also took them a while to get used to the idea that they can hug each other without it being bad. The other members of the house pick up a bit on how they clearly want to hug each other but aren’t sure, so they start an environment of hugs whenever (to those who are comfortable with it) to kind of break the ice. It does help. Eventually, Jawbone and Sandra Lynn get hugs whenever Adaine leaves for school. Aelwyn isn’t quite there yet, but she’s getting close.

They always sit next to each other at group meals. Sandra Lynn, Jawbone, and Lydia demand (positively) that Sunday nights (or Elmville week equivalent) are for family meals. Everyone who lives in the house has to attend, but anyone else who wants to in their gigantic circle is always invited. Aelwyn kind of hates it at first, but slowly discovers that these people actually do care about Adaine and are starting to care about her. She looks forward to them now.

About a month after she arrived at Mordred, Aelwyn was confronted by Kristen and Fig. They made things clear: that they believed wholeheartedly that she had changed and was trying to do better, that they, too, would forgive her for her past actions because they trusted Adaine, and that if she ever needed anything in the house she didn’t feel comfortable asking Adaine for, they’d be so happy to help. But, if she in a single instance tried to betray Adaine again, they wouldn’t hesitate. Because they wouldn’t make Adaine go through that pain again, and this time they’d do anything in their power to protect her. Aelwyn was honestly touched, happy to know that her sister had friends so willing to help her.

oh let me tell u i am so normal about adaine so here have a collection of some of my headcanons (that i can remember)

adaine starts dressing more "punk" in a sense because she lives with fig (totally not cause shes trying to remove herself from her goody two shoes appearance that her parents knew)

I also think this comes out of necessity as she doesnt have the money to buy new clothes if they get damaged so ends up sowing patches onto her clothes.

Adaine is the second tallest bad kid (after gorgug) at 5'11 simply because fabian is 5'10 and claims hes 6'0 (adaine is having none of it)

Adaine and tracker are still really close even after kristens breakup

She also has chronic fatigue which did not help her anxiety attacks. for most of her life she just believed she was lazy and not trying hard enough due to her parents thinking she was making excuses

Fig realizes at the beginning of Sophomore year that she really, really likes fun colors. She’s sick of all black. She wears bright red skirts and t-shirts of all colors and she smokes her cigarettes and dyes her hair and paints her nails pale pink and is uniquely, wildly, entirely herself. She doesn’t limit herself to a “rocker aesthetic”. Isn’t the whole point of rebellion to be you? 

Adaine’s style has changed so much. Partway through freshman year, she begins dressing as defiantly as possible. Whatever her parents would hate the most, Adaine wears. She borrows Fig’s clothes, which tend to be a bit too short and tight on her, but it’s all black with a leather skirt and ripped fishnets and her mother calls her a slut and her father forces her to go back to her room and change. Aelwyn mocks her for it over breakfast and Adaine stares at her food and doesn't wear fishnets or crop tops again.

(Aelwyn sneaks out that night wearing a similar outfit because she knows what her parents would say and the idea of the look on her mother's face being pointed at her is enough to terrify her to the point of nausea, and she drinks and drinks and drinks until she forgets to be afraid.)

Still, Adaine's style keeps changing. Sophomore Year it's mostly her Jacket of Useful things, t-shirts, and jeans. But as much as she hated being forced to wear the Hudol uniform, she really likes nice clothes. Junior Year she begins exploring more elven clothing: long skirts, vests with collared shirts, pleated blouses, breeches, tall boots, et cetera. She, Ayda, and Gorgug work together combining Wizardry and Artificing on her Jacket of Useful Things so that it can effectively transform into any coat/jacket/vest/etc to go with her outfit. It's perfect as her style is constantly shifting on a daily basis. 

This is just my thought on all of their heights, but here we go:

Riz is shortest, obviously. He’s actually average-height for a goblin, resting at about 3’6’’. 

Fig gives severe Tall Vibes, so much so that people forget she’s actually only 5’3’’. She wears boots that bring her up to about 5’5’’, but she’s still the second-shortest bad kid.

No one will let Fabian let down how short he is. He’s tried changing his diet, stretching, everything he can imagine—he’s still 5’4’’. It’s mortifying. Fig fits into his clothes perfectly.

Kristen has always felt somewhat ungainly, her limbs at different shapes and sizes, and she’d crash into things a lot. She’s always felt too much: too tall, too wide, too much, too much, too much. Junior Year she starts working out and begins getting comfortable with her body. Still, she’s tall, almost 5’10’’.

Adaine is quite tall, but her parents and sister are taller than her, and she’s spent her life feeling inescapably small. Her posture is good, but there’s something to the way she tilts her head, the general way she carries herself, hunching around a too-big orb and clutching books to her chest, that makes her look short and small. Sophomore Year, her confidence grows, she becomes more stable, and most importantly, she eats much more. She uncurls herself, and by the time she finds Aelwyn again, Aelwyn is horrified to see that her little sister looms over her. Adaine is 5’11.

Gorgug hunches over a lot, and it’s actually after becoming an Artificer that he gets better with his posture, because he’s sitting a lot more now and his back hurts if he hunches too much. His actual height is 6’5’’. He’s the tallest bad kid.

My personal headcanon is that Tracker also has anxiety and used to “wolf out” whenever she got overwhelmed. So she understands Adaine very well, perhaps better than anyone else. She understands the way Adaine’s anger stems from her fear, from her lack of control. Tracker helps her find the right anxiety meds and teaches her methods of working through and handling feeling overwhelmed.

When the bad kids see Nara and Tracker again in Fallinel, she introduces them all to Nara. “Ah,” Nara says as she and Adaine are introduced, and Adaine tenses for oracle, the daughter who killed Angwyn Abernant, the oracle who ran away, but what she’s met with was: “Tracker’s little sister.”

Adaine never tells Tracker how much it means. She loves Aelwyn, and Aelwyn loves her, but that love is something that has been asked for by both parties. Adaine never realized before that she shouldn't have to ask.

Gut of the West

For the past month or two we've been working on a dark fantasy gothic western setting inspired by the lore and storytelling and gameplay of the Soulsborne genre. The setting is a parody of the idealized and mythologized American Wild West and frontier and deals with xenophobia, manifest destiny, and imperialism as its main themes.

The setting itself takes place after the God of the West devours the metaphysical Center of the world and proceeds to attempt to drag and absorb all other directions into itself. It lied to his citizens promising them that if they live a just and holy life and work towards the fate of the West then they may become holier than him and capable of taking his place. But in the process of devouring the Center one of the God's children, known as the Railroaded, sacrificed themself in order to grant their divinity into every living creature in all Directions, allowing for them to actually be capable of overthrowing the godly power of the West by becoming Saints.

In its death throes the Center became one with the rails that the Railroaded's blood was spilled on and created a town known as Refuge where would-be martyrs may rest and grow in strength. Martyrs from all directions may travel by the Cardinal Railway in their mission to gather Sainthood and overthrow the God of State in the West. From the witches of the East, the living dead from the South, the giants of the North, the wolves from Up on High, all the way Down to the devils, all may achieve Sainthood and write the destiny of the world themselves.

We have so much lore set up already and notes and scrawled notes from several notebooks, the notes app, and stuff jangling around in our head lol. We love soulsborne games with our whole hearts and creating a unique setting that explores our own religious trauma and spite towards organized religion and the US's imperial and fascist history has been really a blast to explore.
