i think a lot about how early-series, demigods are referred to pretty equally as "demigods," "half-bloods," and "godlings," - the last used particularly by gods at demigods - but after that "godlings" is almost exclusively used to refer to minor gods.

Linktober Day 8. Tunic

Oh, it turns out Ian flynn worked on the Shadow animated shorts, he did a pretty good job consider he doesn't always get Shadow right in idw

I'm aware. With the amount of #knowingsmiles posted during the initial announcements, it's hard to not know he was involved.

He also wrote the Knuckles short in Frontiers which I also really liked but I attribute that being thanks mostly for having to work under Tyson Hesse's direction.

Shadow being ok in these shorts happened thanks to Sonic Team giving a LOT more direction and scrutiny on the scripts since it's held to a much higher standard as part of the games than Flynn was for IDW. (which still didn't stop him from inserting some of his fanfiction sourced flynnisms but what it do)

One hopes that this closer work relationship with Sonic Team will teach him how to properly write these characters and internalize the art of writing Sonic Stories in the future. I have my doubts tho since some of the writing in the shorts IS still pretty contrived (wouldn't be on brand for him if it wasn't) and ignores established lore to make the plot make sense like Shadow not warping directly into the Space Ark as he's done before. But nope, we gotta have big fight sequences so let's raid a base for a shuttle he doesn't need!

And I say this as someone who enjoyed it overall and thought the fight scenes were hype. But I'd like fight scenes to have thought behind the spectacle, not without.

Tbh, nothing has made me sympathize more with Kipperlilly Copperkettle than her anger issues.

DC is so dumb about the whole Jason Todd becoming the gang leader final boss because they never really give a reason why he’s wrong.

What if I was insane again about the first thing Alpha Grim Sonic hearing when Nine creates him is his purpose—that he is Nine's friend?

Friendship as a concept in Prime is handled interestingly among its main characters. As Sonic (who thinks he knows a lot about friendship) comes to deepen his understanding of what it means to have a home/be home, I think it's safe to say his definition of friendship develops along with it. Compare this to Nine, who's learned everything he knows about "friendship" and personal relationships in general through his relationship with Sonic (at least, after his childhood of bullying).

So of course I think about Nine, who never wants to be hurt again, yet can no longer bear feeling alone (not after feeling that sense of companionship and belonging with someone else), which results in him creating a warped version of friendship for himself (one where he is surrounded by people, but people who only do whatever he wants, who have no opinions and thoughts of their own, who can't backstab him). And so I think about Alpha Grim Sonic, who is the very first robot Nine creates under this idea of frienship and companionship.

Nine is his master, and Alpha Grim Sonic is his protector, his bodyguard, his weapon

But he's also his friend.

Alpha Grim Sonic doesn’t talk back (can't even if he wanted to), but his purpose has always been clear to him: be Nine's friend. That's what he was created to be.

So I imagine Alpha Grim Sonic performing his purpose to the T at first under Nine's framework. He's Nine's friend, so he does whatever Nine commands, he never talks back or challenges authority, he protects Nine at all cost. And then, perhaps unbeknownst to Nine, he begins to shift ever so gradually. Sure, he's never insubordinate, he never offers up opinions, he still can't speak, but the lines of devotion begin to blur.

Is it in his code? Is out of a real sense of feeling?

Alpha Grim Sonic does not understand friendship, no matter whether it believes it does or not. But it's ironic to me if, despite being created under Nine's warped idea of it, the robot slowly grows their own soul, witnesses other displays of frienship and care, and drifts outside the bounds of that idea (a carefully crafted painting begins to leak out of its frame, expanding the masterpiece). They protect Nine, they do only what he commands, and yet they hate to see Nine in pain, they wish to bring Nine comfort (and so it feels good to him when Nine commands him to do such things that might bring his master comfort).

Does this make any sense? To believe that friendship means to hold one person on a pedestal, to protect them, to only listen to them, to never talk back, to never have opinions, and yet, despite believing what your creator tells you of friendship with them (your very purpose in this existence), to slowly fall further into those feelings that true care and love for another person brings, to wish to comfort someone the way one might describe a true friend would, despite not realizing any of this.

once again thinking about the worldbuilding in the riordanverse of "names are power" / "belief is power."

The Tri were only able to become immortal through convincing enough people to worship them that it became true. Monsters and immortals only exist through continued belief, and if enough people believe that they're dead or gone then it becomes true, like Pan. Their varied forms exist and manifest as they're believed in and called upon. Names call attention and epithets summon aspects. They're acknowledgement. Belief. Putting a name to a concept creates it as an individual.

And that's so fascinating when you start applying it to demigods. How much of their abilities are based on belief in themselves, in expectations of each other, in their parents' expectations of them? We've seen mortal figures who became immortal in some form or another because they were remembered. Even the lares - ancestral house gods, who persist because they're remembered. They have a legacy.

At what point does a demigod achieve that status? Rumors and whispers about them so persistent that they slowly become true. "I heard that Jason Grace is the son of two gods, does that make him a god?" "I heard Percy Jackson defeated a titan single-handedly. That he can create hurricanes without breaking a sweat. That he can control blood." After awhile, after enough rumors, does it become impossible to tell where they end and the legends begin? Isn't that what being a demigod is; half-legend?

Alright I know this is specifically my personal niche as a catholic Trek fan, but:

One of these days I am going to finish writing this fic idea I've had gnawing at my brain for, like, six months, about Shaxs doing the Bajoran Month of Atonement (*cough cough lent cough cough*) and giving up violence for thirty days as his penance.

Which sounds good in theory, until you remember that violence is kind of his job.

Cecio:

"Would I betray Celia?" Hes shaking already, fists clenched, at one small question- so unlike his usual collected self.

"Betray my only blood left, betray my older sister who raised me into the man i am now-" His anger reaches its peak, handsome face warped with ugly wrath. Then something breaks, his voice going quiet "-for better or worse?"

Silver eyes turn away from you, internal conflict written all over his face. if you had to chose you think you would say the winning emotion is shame, but before you can justify that choice, his face is wiped blank of emotion, returning to a plain stony mask, but this time there is no false humor or kindness in those silver eyes, and in the moment the blue sheened silver seem more like steel.

"i would never betray my sister, sell her out for my own gain. i may be a selfish monster and unashamed of it, but i will never tear down my family for coin or reputation, and if i was forced to, my dear sister would be last on that list. To betray my sister would be to betray myself, because her interests are my best interests."

his overly careful intonations seem to betray his true emotions, but it is not anger that threatens to overwhelm him, not anymore. eyes squeezed shut, he massages his temples with his fingers and as the fight leaves his body he sighs in defeat

"If there was no other option? if i had to chose? then it would depend on who im betraying her for. if i had to chose between Celia and the rest of our family- well, its what she would want me to do. we need Celia, but shes stuck in so many ways, and she knows it. the right answer is that if i had no other choice i would betray her in exchange for the safety of the rest of us, sacrifice Celia for Ramettos future, god knows the rest of us don't have a chance to change either."

"but that's the right option, the one she would want me to take, even as she hates me for having to be the one who makes that decision." hes leaning back in his chair, and you could swear he starts smiling as he continues talking, "for all my work is separated from my sisters i don't think i could every be forced into an ultimatum without her knowing- hell i don't think i can do much of anything without her knowing- and im sure whatever i do against her orders is allowed by her as she knows i wouldn't do so without my own reasons."

"that all is to say, i would never be in the position where i am forced to betray her because she would rather betray herself than put me in that position."

he grows quiet again, what little pride he could take in his sisters likely actions falling into melancholy.

"what am i do do but as my sister, my leader wishes, what she says is best for me?"

he looks to the side, eyes avoiding your gaze, eyelashes fluttering closed.

"I would betray her and hate myself for the rest of my life- and with that betrayal, that choice, i would understand my sister in a way i never would have be able to if i did not stab her in the back with the sword she gave me."

Celia:

Celia stares, eyes glowing in the dim light, written on her face confusion at the question, at the audacity in questioning how far her love for her brother goes.

Gold stained lips move slowly, enunciating the word with force,

"No"

Something glimmers in her hand, a glimmer of light arcing through the air towards you. Its surprisingly painless, even as the floor slams against your body, deep bruises the least of your worries. as your vision fades you see her stand to loom over your soon to be corpse, and you can almost hear the rest of her answer-

"I would sooner betray myself."

Finally made Lilith's mother, Amara Whitestrike. Yes she is blind, though she can see just not in the traditional sense. Sees souls more so then she does any sort of physical form. She met Sanguinius when he was moulting and rolling in the sand on Baal Secundus, where she had to try and stop herself from laughing at the sight of him. Gotta draw her eventually, this is just a mock up so I know what she generally looks like without falling into same face syndrome. Also she wears earrings made from Sanguinius' fallen feathers that he made for her :3

Thought it'd be cute since I have these two as having a very silly and cute relationship; it helps that she understands him and is pretty much the main thing that is convincing him he's not actually a demon. She tells him his soul would be far more twisted then it is. He doesn't ask how she knows this, but knows it's probably due to how she 'sees' the world. Apparently it's quite colourful, was able to see the Emperor despite his illusion when he came to Baal due to said sight. Of course by this time Lilith was also born, due to the fact she and Sanguinius knew each other long before the Emperor came along. Has very good hearing and a very good sense of smell. It was well known that she could hear a raven guard trying to silently pass her by. Apparently Astartes also have a very strong smell to them-
