i think a lot about how early-series, demigods are referred to pretty equally as "demigods," "half-bloods," and "godlings," - the last used particularly by gods at demigods - but after that "godlings" is almost exclusively used to refer to minor gods.
something something i am literally always chewing on the concept of the line between immortals/demigods/monsters/etc being thinner than it appears

Cinematic Comic Characters Ranked! (Year 2003) Part III
Seven comic book movies made their mark during the 2003 year. A big year for sequels as we got X2: X-Men United, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life. Making their debut to the big screen is Daredevil and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. And a first on our list, we got TWO sequels from one series: The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. With two previous champions (Wolverine in 2000 and Lara Croft in 2001) going up against a whole new group of contenders, this list was one of the more exciting ones to make! Here’s #39 through #21!
*SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ALL THE MOVIES HIGHLIGHTED ABOVE*
39. Sati (The Matrix Revolutions)
Tumblr media
"I did it for Neo."
Thanks to her amazing father, Sati is able to avoid deletion and live with the Oracle. She sweetly pops in and out of Revoltions, easily bonding with everyone she meets. Except Agent Smith. She knows bad when she sees it and tells him just that right before he hijacks her into becoming him. When Neo saves the Matrix she returns to normal and reunites with Seraph and The Oracle, creating a beautiful sunrise for Neo.
38. Kosa (Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life)
"Do you ever do things the easy way?"
When Lara's quest to stop Reiss from getting Pandora's box takes her to Africa, she reconnects with her friend, Kosa, who serves as her guide amongst the villagers. He's highly knowledgeable in the legends of Pandora's box and is quick thinking on his feet when Reiss and his security come through. He tricks them into going through a dangerous trail that gets all of Reiss's men killed by these giant nature monsters. After Lara saves the day he gladly escorts the crew home.
37. Councillor Hamann (The Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions)
"Old men like me don't bother with making points."
Maybe it's because of my country's current mess known as the government it was very hard to trust Hamann when he was first introduced. When he proved to really be a good guy with the best intentions for Neo and for Zion I was good. It's thanks to his strong belief in Neo that Lock constantly doesn't get his way. Not that his was is evil or anything, but it's wrong and had they listened to him, they would've all been dead.
36. Captain Nemo (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen)
"I walk a different path."
Captain Nemo is a pirate that owns an incredible ship, is great with a sword, and worships the Goddess of Death in his spare time. Despite being a pirate he seems to have an honor code and helps out his fellow League members anyway he can. After they save the day, He decides to explore the world on his ship, inviting the rest of the League members.
35. Professor Charles Xavier (X2: X-Men United)
Tumblr media
"Mr. President we're here to stay. The next move is yours."
Trying to calm down tensions between mutants and humans Professor X accidentally falls into Stryker's trap and gets kidnapped so Stryker can get him to work his own Cerebro. With the help of his weaponized son, Jason, Stryker fools Professor X into almost killing every mutant on the planet and when Magneto shows up, he almost ends up killing every human on the planet. It isn't until Storm and Nightcrawler show up that Professor snaps out of his killing machine mindset and leaves with his students to safety. After Jean dies, Professor X leads the X-Men to confront the U.S. President and works out a sort of peace to finally ease the tension between the two human species.
34. Kid (The Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions)
"The machines don't care how old I am. They'll kill me just the same."
It's hilarious that we never learn the name of one of the handful of people who were key components to Zion's survival during the first wave of attack from the sentinels. "Kid" was rescued by Neo himself from the Matrix and now looks up to the Chosen One. He also wants to do anything he can to help out in the war and gets taken under Mifune's wing when they prepare for the sentinel's attack. When all the chips seem down it's the Kid who ends up saving the day by opening the gate's for Niobe's ship to wreck havoc on the sentinels. When Neo ends the war, the Kid gladly decides to become the messenger and spreads the news throughout Zion.
33. Kate Brewster (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines)
Tumblr media
"I hate machines."
In the present she's a regular veterinarian that gets her world rocked when she runs into a druggie, a female robot trying to kill her, and a male robot trying to save her. She get's even more shook when she finds out she's marrying said druggie and will become an important figure in the resistance against Skynet and it's machines. The whole movie she fights with this knowledge until about when she realizes her dad is in danger. Even though she's going to be important in the future, she's not really capable of doing anything now and is always in constant need of protection from Terminator.
32. Agent Smith (The Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions)
Tumblr media
"We're here to take from you what you took from us. Purpose."
Honestly I was a little over the fact that Agent Smith ended up being the main villain. Yeah he now had this cool virus-like power to turn everyone in the matrix into himself, including Seraph and the all knowing Oracle, but he must've fought Neo like fifteen times in the trilogy so pardon me that I wasn't pumped to see them go at it again. I think it was also a bit anticlimactic because we've seen him get his ass handed to him every single time prior so I didn't really think we were going to get a different outcome. And we didn't. Neo saves the day and Agent Smith complains about life being unfair before he blows up, even though he was the one practically cheating the whole time.
31. Wilson Fisk/The Kingpin (Daredevil)
"I was raised in the Bronx, Wesley. This is something you wouldn't understand."
The man running the underground of Hell's Kitchen. Wilson Fisk becomes The Kingpin of the city, taking out anyone who stands in his way and leaving their corpses with a single rose when authorities find them. He crosses Daredevil's path when he orders his hitman, Bullseye, to kill Nikolaus Natchios and his daughter, Elektra. Currently dating Elektra, Matt tries to stop the hit but fails. When he also finds out Fisk killed his father years ago, he finally goes to put a stop to the man. Fisk shows off his incredible strength by whooping Daredevil's ass up and down his entire office until Matt finally gets the advantage and defeats him. Taken straight to prison, Fisk vows that it won't be long before he's out on the streets again.
30. Jonathan Reiss (Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life)
"Tell me you haven't walked around and thought the world could do without some people?"
Even though I have thought this, it's mainly with people who are serial killers or racists or things like that. This guy literally wants to kill most of the world's population, except for those willing to pay for his antidote. He's definitely not all there in the head but with all the resources money can buy it's hard to stop Reiss from getting his hands on Pandora's box. However, Lara does manage to take him down in the end, throwing him in a pool of acid and plague. What makes him more twisted is that he still tries to go for the box even though he skin is literally melting off his body.
29. Ororo Munroe/Storm (X2: X-Men United)
Tumblr media
"Sometimes anger can help you survive."
It seems, once again, that Storm takes a role of compassion in this X-Men sequel. It's understandable, she's Xavier's oldest student turned teacher and serves as a role model to the younger generation. But the Storm I knew in the comics is all that and can still kick serious ass. Sometimes I found myself wondering if Storm even knew how to properly use her powers? Like why would she create a bunch of tornadoes to get rid of the military jets after her when she could've just zapped them away? She wasn't afraid of killing them because she used lightning on Nightcrawler a few scenes earlier, so it's safe to say she can control it's intensity. Her moment to save the day did come up though when she uses her freezing winds to snap Professor X out of Jason Stryker's mind controlling illusions.
28. Zee (The Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions)
"If I were out there and he were here, he'd be doing the same thing!"
Zee's been through a lot. She just lost her two brothers to the war and now her husband, Link, has taken their place on Morpheus's ship. She's terrified that she might not ever be reunited with him but instead of letting that fear immobilize her, she has it fuel her to make sure that fear never happens. She joins Captain Lock's forces as a volunteer and works together with Charra to help hold back the sentinel forces. When it's just down to her and the Kid they prove themselves by taking on the remaining sentinels blocking the gate, allowing Niobe and Morpheus's crew to come in a save the day. When the wars over, she's finally reunited with Link.
27. Dorian Gray (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen)
"If that had been permanent, I'd have been very upset!"
The Immortal. Dorian seems to be upset that he's cursed from ever dying as long as a portrait of himself remains out of his sight. It's all fake as he was only pretending to want to help the League so he could do M's bidding, who's in possession of his painting. He especially fools Mina, but karma comes back around to bite him when the vampiress shows up to take him down. He gains the advantage at first but when he lets his guard down Mina defeats him and shows him his portrait. All those years he's avoided death catch up to him and he turns into ash and bones within seconds.
26. Mifune (The Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions)
Tumblr media
"If we have to give these bastards our lives, we give'em hell before we do!"
We don't see much of Mifune until he's getting ready for the sentinel invasion on Zion. He obviously sees himself in the Kid and takes him under his wing as they prepare for the battle of their lives. After one hell of a speech, he proves to lead by example as he starts raining bullets on all the sentinels that are unfortunate to cross his path. Eventually he's the last man standing and it takes literally hundreds of sentinels to bring the guy down. Right before he dies he's able to pass the torch and the mission on to the Kid who, along with Zee, is successful.
25. Elektra Natchios (Daredevil)
Tumblr media
"I want to look into the eyes of my father's killer as he dies!"
One thing I always ask for movies if they want me to believe a couple romantically fall in love after first meeting at the beginning of the film is to have some time go by to make it realistic. This isn't what happens when Matt and Elektra first meet. With no time frame established it seems that they fall in love with each other within a matter of days and that's just something I couldn't buy. However I really did like their rain scene, I thought it was really cute. When her father is killed she believes Daredevil is the one who committed the act and quickly tries to avenge him. It isn't until after she wounds him severely with her signature sai that she finds out that Daredevil is actually Matt and that he didn't actually kill her father but was trying to save him. She then goes against her father's real killer, Bullseye, and--for reasons I will never understand--easily loses and dies in Matt's arms after Bullseye stabs her with her own weapon. At the end of the film there's a tiny hint at Elektra's survival so expect to see her on another list.
24. Seraph (The Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions)
"You do not truly know someone until you fight them."
It's fitting that the first time we see Seraph he tries to kick Neo's ass. He's the Oracle's bodyguard and takes his job very seriously. When he's not protecting Oracle he's helping Morpheus and Trinity deal with Merovingian or taking care of little Sati. I really thought they were going to get away when Agent Smith appeared but at least they were brought back to life by the end of the movie.
23. Terry Sheridan (Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Cradle of Life)
Tumblr media
"I do think we're a pair. Opposite sides of the same coin."
Terry used to be Lara's partner/lover until he betrayed his country and was arrested for his crimes. When Lara needs his help to stop Reiss years later a game of flirtation, doubt and trust begins with the pair. In truth, Terry is very much the yin to Lara's yang. The only difference is that Lara truly does want to learn about the mysteries of the world while Terry is just looking to profit. This often leaves them at odds with Lara eventually abandoning him after a heavy make out session and some nipple play. He shows up at the after Lara saves the day but betrays her when he tries to take Pandora's Box for himself and sell it, despite it's potential to kill millions. Lara tries to persuade him otherwise but kills him after it's obvious he isn't changing his mind.
22. John Connor (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines)
"The battle has just begun."
John Connor must be really fucking important if he's constantly in danger of getting killed by man-hunting robots sent from the future. He's a bit whiny in the beginning because he really hates that he's being molded into this future self, which I totally get but I also got that Terminator definitely needed to choke some sense into that boy. He's also somewhat dependent on the Terminator as more of a father instead of a really good bodyguard. We find out that this is what gets him killed in the future but hey he also finds out he's going to have a family of his own too! In the end, after Skynet launches its global attack, John stops fighting his responsibilities and starts becoming the leader he's meant to be.
21. Rodney Skinner (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen)
Tumblr media
"And need I remind you I'm naked in the snow!"
Skinner, also known as the Invisible Man, is the only one who doesn't take things too seriously in the League. He's also the one that happens to always be naked minus the hat and trench coat. He stays in hiding when it appears he's working for M but shows no hard feelings to the group when they realize he's wrong. He even saves Sawyer from getting attacked and gets his naked flesh burned in the process. His wounds heal and he ends up joining the others on Nemo's ship to travel the world.
