Sorry I kinda of feel a tad evil right now. Saw an insta post where it said that there were actual wolves used in the production of Nosferatu. In checking the comments coming to find how people were commending it and everything and how an actor was put at risk blah blah blah. And I'm like HA that's nothing. They used actual wolves in The Sorcerer's Apprentice but no one ever cares about the movie so of course it isn't noticed (it really should be though).
In fact I even remember the behind the scenes tidbit of how the wolves were so excited to be doing their role that the crew had to CGI their faces so they wouldn't look friendly and even altering their wagging tails.

that movie was fucked. i love it
#nosferatu#genuinely did not think i was going to enjoy it that much going in#but cinema is so back baby#only critique is that i did not get to see nicholas hoult tormented anywhere near enough to what i wanted#ngl i've never understood finding him attractive until this film#until the moment i saw him being pathetic and whiny and moaning about it all while trapped in orlock's castle like oh this is IT lmao#friend who went with me was comparing it to 1992 dracula and being like 'at least you had young gary oldman and could understand the appeal#as opposed to nosferatu where its messed up all the time ???? sounds like a you problem cause the appeal is very much so present

In honour of the Nicholas Hoult renaissance, I decided to rewatch Equals (directed by Drake Doremus). I watched this film multiple times in my teen and young adult years, but it truly hits different this time after I have had to take medication for OCD and suffer the side effect of having my emotions numbed.
The director, as it turns out, made this film in part to rebel against the experience of being on ADHD meds from a very young age and feeling like he lost a part of his life to that. The film did not break a lot of new ground, perhaps, but it certainly added to the discussion regarding whether we should really wish a large chunk of our emotions away just because they don’t feel convenient.
By the way, as slow as the movie is, Nick Hoult and Kristen Stewart are reliably good in it so anyone wanting to see more of either of them can give it a try. Their performances become particularly poignant towards the end. (Spoilers under the cut)
Nick’s character, Silas, ends up getting the cure to numb his emotions again because he mistakenly believes Kristen’s character, Nia, has been killed along with their unborn child. He comes home, only to find that she is still alive, and they just try to cling to each other for the few hours that they have left together while he still has his emotions, before the cure kicks in. Silas begs Nia to remember that he is going to be in there and to not give up on him, a promise that she tries to keep as they escape their city the next morning. On the ride, Silas is numb like before, but he still tries to reach out to her, because he remembers their journey and he knows what she means to him, even if he can’t feel it at the moment. And honestly, Nick and Kristen acted the hell out of those moments.
Having gone through that phase where I could barely feel anything and had to assure my loved ones that I was still in there somewhere, this film now hits me hard. Plus, I guess I just love angst 😂
#this is in no way an anti medication post#plenty of people need meds and i legit did too#it was life saving for me#but there is a real cost that we incur when we are put on medication and that experience needs more visibility in media#also also the apple store aesthetic of the film was made fun of a lot#but it’s so relaxing to me 😂#equals#drake doremus#nicholas hoult#kristen stewart

saw nosferatu and it was a freaky good time! some non-spoiler thoughts:
robert eggers watching bram stoker's dracula (1994) and noticing the story has dracula look like a normal dude when interacting with mina: hm. cowardly. rotting corpse or nothing.
bill skarsgard is unrecognizable in extremely creepy prosthetics but i do actually think the scariest thing in this movie was lily-rose depp's tongue in that one scene. was unfamiliar with her before this movie but she was really giving it her all.
the sound design in this movie was absolutely IMPECCABLE, especially during the sequence when thomas hutter arrives at orlok's castle. the creeping sense of dread!
perfect way to spend christmas night is watching nicholas hoult, terrified, run around a vampire's castle.
also very happy that a large amount of this movie takes place at night and it's not only visible but also looks great, lots of blue and silver shades.
gonna be honest i did forget the name of two of the side characters and was just mentally referring to them as van helsing and seward because everyone in this movie lines up perfectly with the characters from dracula.
i really do see why there are so many articles about the number of rats on set in this movie because that was. a LOT of rats.
beautiful costumes, especially the dresses and hair.
not sure i've ever seen a character in a film roll their r's as much as count orlok in this one.
could have used more of the cat!
#pie says stuff#between this and the vourdalak it's been a big year for vampire movies i'm very happy#nosferatu#nosferatu 2024

Reflections: What exactly is “the darkness” in Nosferatu (2024)?
A theory as to why individual characters seem to experience Orlok’s presence differently
TRIGGER WARNING! Descriptions of SA are mentioned in this text. If you’d like to skip past the descriptions, skip over paragraph 2, centered around Thomas. There are other mentions of SA in here, but they’re only mentions. I also talk about depression, grief, guilt, and trauma, as general experiences. All of these things are personal interpretations of the meaning of this movie.
SPOILER ALERT!
I don’t see many people really unpacking Nosferatu, so I’d like to take a swing at it. I’ve been wondering why Orlok’s influence has a different impact on each of the movie’s central living victims. Thomas (Nicholas Hoult), Ellen (Lily Rose Depp), and Friedrich (Aaron Taylor Johnson). The movie’s tagline is “succumb to the darkness,” and I think each character is meant to represent different “darknesses.”
Thomas’s storyline is a heavy-handed, arguably-not-even-veiled allegory for SA. When he first arrives at Orlok’s castle, Orlok encourages him to drink. After Thomas cuts his finger, Orlok tells him to sit by the fire. Orlok approaches Thomas and he is horrified. He wakes up the next morning lying face down on the floor with his clothes on but disheveled. He has marks on his chest (bite marks) and appears disturbed, confused, in extreme distress. There is later a scene of Orlok pinning Thomas down on a bed, and sucking his blood. Thomas attempts to kill Orlok in his sleep, but Orlok stands, naked, and Thomas runs away in horror. There is then a scene where Orlok, naked, lays on top of Thomas, moving rhythmically as he sucks his blood. Later, when he’s back home, Ellen lays her head on Thomas’s chest, and he pushes her away, Orlok flashing before his eyes. When trying to talk about what Orlok did, Thomas says he can’t even say it. Considering all of these events, I would argue the SA isn’t even supposed to be implied, it’s flat out SA in addition to the vampire aspect.
Ellen’s storyline can be interpreted multiple ways and also contains several heavy allusions to SA, but that’s not the one that jumped out to me, personally. She mentions being shunned by her father at a young age. The opening scene is her praying for help. She cries often, has extreme anxiety being separated from her husband, is constantly fighting an internal battle. Her actions/reactions feel out of her control, to the point where she can’t even feel pain. She believes Frederick hates her, she thanks Anna for being her friend, she asks if evil comes from within. Admittedly, I could be projecting, but Ellen’s storyline feels reminiscent of depression. Again, Ellen’s storyline has clear implications of SA, and I don’t mean to undermine that. But for the sake of explaining why Orlok’s influence affected characters differently, I am limiting characters to individual allusions. And, of course, there are many different ways depression can manifest. But Ellen is clearly a character struggling with mental health issues. She displays feelings of unreasonable guilt and works hard at trying to “be happy.”
Friedrich represents grief. This one is mostly self explanatory, I think. Grief can drive someone mad, especially when it’s born out of a traumatic event. “If I just did this differently, or that…” The would’ve, could’ve, should’ve’s can drive someone crazy. Like Ellen, Friedrich feels unreasonable guilt. Even though he was under a sleeping spell and couldn’t have done much to help, guilt isn’t an easy feeling to ration away. Ultimately, (I believe, though it’s unclear) he takes his life.
So, Thomas is trauma, Ellen is depression, Friedrich is grief. Orlok gives them unique horrific experiences that they must battle with, which is why his influence affects each character differently. Each person has a different idea of what so-called “darkness” is. Ellen wrestles with feelings of being seduced and also repulsed by Orlok. Someone suffering depression could feel it’s a “part” of them (even though that’s untrue!), while simultaneously recognizing it’s hurting them. Orlok’s presence hits Friedrich like a train. It’s sudden, and horrific. It’s consuming, ruthless. Much like grief. Thomas shuts down. He struggles severely to even say out loud what happened to him. He feels great shame (even though he shouldn’t, it’s never ever the victim’s fault!), and he’s confused and disoriented, feelings common with survivors of SA.
If you read any of this, thank you for listening! I fully acknowledge that this is an imperfect theory, but I’ve been thinking a lot about it and I think it could at least somewhat explain these differences. If you have any explanations/interpretations, please share, I’d love to hear!

Nicholas Hoult x Reader
Yn and Nicholas Hoult have known each other since their Skins days, but it wasn't love at first sight. How did they go from a one sides rivalry to dream marriage in 17 years?
Movie release dates/years have been edited for the sake of the story!

A laugh rang loud and clear across the busy set. My ears perked up at it and my eyes immediately rolled. There is only on person who has a laugh like that, a laugh that carries through the air with an annoying volume: Yn Ln. I glance towards the noise and notice a small gathering; April, Mitch, and Mike stand around with her laughing at something. Yn looks proud, so it must've been her joke.
"Oi! Nick come join us!" Mitch calls to me.
"I'm good mate, there's some lines I was hoping to review before we start filming again!" It was a lie. There were no lines, I reviewed everything exhaustively yesterday, a bunch of 'Michelle I'm sorry this' and 'Sid get laid' that. I just can't go over there. I can't imagine anything more dull than flocking around Yn and listen to whatever nonsense she spews into conversation.
"Alright we're going to pick up at scene 6. It's our last of the day so let's make it good!" Calls our director. We all fall into place, April by my side, and the others in a semicircle.
"After we're done for the day we should try that place for dinner," she says to Yn.
"Oh yes!" replies Yn with a cheery smiles. I can't help but scoff under my breath.
Y.L.
Across our fake circe, over the chatter of set I hear Nicholas scoff. It stung somewhere deep in my chest and tripped up my good mood.
I was over the moon to book this gig. Like almost every actor here, Skins was my start; from here I'd book more and more until I've reached the stars. My character was an awkward, ugly duckling but she was mine and I love her. This experience has been the best things thats happened to me ever; I've made so many great friends. There is only one problem: Nicholas Hoult. He's a phenomenal actor and a wonderful guy to everyone but me.
I can't recall what I've done over the past months to make him dislike me; at our first read throughs we were cordial and made wonderful small talk, but as filming progressed he distances himself and always has a noise or eye roll to accompany my words. The worst part was he's cute and seeing how hardworking he is around set doesn't help the school girl crush I have for him. And the nail on the coffin? He's a gentleman and so kind to everyone else, just not me. I'm a lucky girl, I suppose; you can't please everyone, so having 7/8 actors be my friends was fine by me. Plus his negatively was only ever a stumble in the road, not a ruin to my day.

"Cheers!" A round of glasses clinking filled my ears. The core cast got together to celebrate the wrap of season 2 for Skins; we were currently tucked away in the back of some local restaurant in Bristol. I was sat at the end of the table, with Mitch on my right and Dev on my left; everyone was joking and sharing stories, it seemed every member at the table was holding at least 3 conversations. As Cassie would say, it was lovely. The warm lights reflected off of the wooden table and casted a gentle glow on everyone, including Nicholas at the other end of the table. We made eye contact as the table erupted into a roar at something Kaya said; I felt my cheeks burn with the stretch of my smile, but Nicholas's quickly turned from a bright laugh to a tight lipped smile. I rolled by eyes and chose to ignore him; I've let go any wish I had to understand his dislike of me.
I tore my eyes away from Nicholas's direction and looked around, my heart grew heavy. I am so glad we are all geared up to start new projects, but I'm so sad to see everyone separate. I hope we'd all be able to keep in touch. The conversations slowed down so I grabbed my almost empty glass and tapped on it, "Not to make this a cheesy movie moment, but I wanted to let you all know how grateful I am for Skins. Not only has this shown given us a jumping point, but its connected us all..."
N.H.
"...connected us all..." there she bloody goes, killing the mood with some dumb speech. Yn's words soon sounded like the parents from Charlie Brown. Yet, I looked forward to pretend to listen. This is the first time I've really looked at her out of character. I've gotten used to her brush out curls that would frizz out in the English humidity and the hideous fake glasses they'd put on her. All apart of the ugly duckling role she plays. Off set she looks fine, I wouldn't say anything special.
I look down and watch the condensation drip down my glass and onto the table; as the droplets raced I couldn't help but wish Yn was just a little funnier and more interesting.

My bed felt softer and fluffier than a cloud when I flopped into in face first. It had been a long few months; Warm Bodies finished it wrap, I went straight into auditioning for new projects, and before I could blink I was swept up into press for the movie. I'm living the dream, but sometimes I just want everything to slow down.
My eyes just fluttered closed when my phone let out rapid buzzes, one at a time. I sighed in relief when it went silent, but was quickly disappointed when it started again. I rolled over to retrieve it from the bed beside me. Messages from the old skins group chat filled my lock screen; we made it after a meet up a couple years ago, but it was only ever active on someone's birthday, that was until today. The messages informed me that our old show was trending on twitter with fans pulling old photos, clips, and interviews from our time. I smiled and replied quickly before loading up the app for a quick trip down memory lane.
...
My room slowly grew darker as hours passed. Hours have passed as I went down the rabbit hole of Twitter reminiscing; at some point I ended up clicking on different links to interviews the cast has done. The current one was Yn answering a question that I can't remember. A pit formed in my stomach, she was beautiful inside and out. Every interview I saw her in, she had nothing but praises for everyone else and took every compliment with such humility. I was in awe of her answers, despite being formed on the spot came out with the poise of a well rehearsed speech. I made a horrible misjudgment.
"Whose do I most admire of the cast? I'd have to say Nick," the guilt in my chest grew, "he's so talented that you'd think he was a pure asshole if you only watch the show. We're not the closest, but I've seen from being around him he is an absolute sweetheart. That's what makes him admirable, his absolute kick ass work as Tony while being a fantastic cast mate."
I wished she was lying, but I can tell it's all genuine. I spent those years annoyed by her and mentally tearing down this girl, but she wasn't a girl. Yn was a poised young women who was down to Earth and spent her time raising people up. She was right we weren't close, because of me, but she still through so highly of me. I wanted to hit myself, she could've been an amazing friend and I was too dumb to let go of stupid stereotypes from a fictional show to see it.
I turned my phone off and rolled over. Tonight, I fell asleep with the beautiful sound of Yn laughing in my ears.

It was warm inside the event hall; I was currently sitting at my assigned table at the EBA Awards. I was nominated for my role as R in Warm Bodies, but seeing as I wasn't a huge name I was at the beginning of the carpet. I looked around to see other people mingling to pass the time as everyone makes their way in, but no one stood out so I stayed seated. Somewhere in the distance I heard a loud laugh; it was eerily familiar and certainly beautiful but I couldn't seem to place it. I pulled out my phone someone stopped near the table causing me to look up.
A breath got stuck in my throat as Yn Ln stood in front of me looking like a picture of perfection,"hey Nicholas! I saw you and wanted to catch up..."

Hi! Could you write a Hank McCoy x Reader fic with one of these dialogue prompts? (Whatever you feel like)
5. "God, you always make me blush so damn much." (Nicholas Hoult is always blushing so I thought it would be nice if Hank did as well)
23. "Wait...are you making pancakes? Can I help?" (He seems like the type of person who cooks)
25. "Have you been drinking enough water?" (He is a doctor)
I'm pretty sure I read every fic with him in this site and I want more.😂
Doctor’s Orders
Hank McCoy x reader
Number 25: “Have you been drinking enough water?”
(Reader is AFAB)
Hehe I couldn't decide so I did all of them, sorry it took so long, I went through like a no writing phase but I think I'm slowly returning
Sometimes you hated having a uterus. More specifically you hated it when it was that time of the month. How you hated even being born whenever that time hit and of course that was today.
Instead of listening to your body and wallowing in pain as the cramps hit hard that morning, practically almost making you spit up your dinner from the night before, you put on your adult shoes and chose to be productive around the X-mansion as you usually did.
Most days weren’t so bad, you’d help with the younger level kids here and there before you did some of your own training but today? Today they were rowdy for whatever reason, maybe the weather, all you knew was that you wanted this week to be done already.
You tried your hardest to just be there, be present as you seemed to be running around all day at different peoples beck and call when all you really wanted to do was curl up and scream but of course that wasn’t like you. So you had to plaster a fake customer smile. But you could even barely do that anymore as halfway through the day you decided your body couldn’t take it anymore. So you went to the one place you knew no one would bother you.
The labs.
Most of the time it was just Hank in the labs and you of course didn’t want to bother him when he may be working but then again he was your boyfriend and you were in a lot of pain. So you went.
You entered his labs slowly and peeking around the entrance, you saw that luckily he wasn’t dealing with any chemicals at the moment.
“Thank god you’re working,” when he worked that meant everyone knew not to disturb him, well everyone but apparently you.
His arms set down whatever thingamabob was in his hands, “please come in why don’t you?”
You did realize it was rude, “sorry,” you mumbled out as you backed up into the nearest corner and squatted down. With your knees to your stomach you instantly felt better even if only just a little.
With your head tucked into your legs you could just feel the strange sight he most certainly had on you. “Don’t mind me…” you breathed as a big cramp just made its way, “just go about your way, I promise I’ll be quiet.”
“If you think I’m going to be able to focus while you’re scrunched up in the corner like that you’re absolutely crazy.”
“I’m fine,” you said, your voice muffled.
You didn’t see it but you could tell Hank was staring at you. But he was staring at you not with disbelief more with worry.
“What is it?” He asked.
“Nothing just got my period this morning, I’ll be fine.” Typically this only happened to you on maybe the first two days and usually you just toughed it out.
Suddenly an overwhelming cramp could be felt in your lower stomach area, you groaned as you leaned forward, your knees now against the floor with your forehead touching the floor “…just give me a moment,” you said, refusing to move from that spot with your arms clutching your body.
“Have you been drinking enough water?”
Ugh. That question wouldn’t have annoyed you if the answer was yes. But it’s not your fault everyone seemed to need your help left and right.
“Maybe half a bottle so far,” you said.
His mouth drops, “that’s not nearly enough.”
“Yeah yeah, thank you doctor,” you cut off, still hurting.
You don’t pay mind to the noise you hear shuffling before you see a bottle being held out towards you.
You reach out, taking it with a thanks. “Wait here,” he commands before he turns around. Not like I have much choice, you thought as you closed your eyes again feeling a little bit better as the cramps randomly subside for a moment.
Pretty soon you hear Hank’s footsteps come back and you begin to hear shuffling beside you. Curious, you open your eyes and watch as he sets down a blanket beside you. Then a makeshift pillow made out of a jacket.
He didn’t even have to say anything and you moved there willingly. You didn’t care that the floor was hard underneath, you were just glad to lie down somewhere.
While you lay there on your side feeling like garbage he hands you a warm heating pad which you gladly take and he moves the water bottle closer to you before he takes another blanket and covers you with it.
“Drink your water and let your body take a break,” he adds.
Once he makes sure you’re all settled his eyes catch yours as you lay with a smile on your face.
“What?”
“You love me,” you sing-song almost like a kid would.
Although a grin starts to tug at one of the corners of his lips he reaches out dragging his hand down your face closing your eyes in the process as you would a departed person.
“Get some rest.”
Your eyes open again as you watch him leave your side to return back to his work. ‘He loves me,’ you teased once again in thought as you snuggled with the blanket and heating pad.

“He’s terrifying, it’s not Bill,” Hoult told IndieWire at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of “The Order.” “That’s what’s so worrying about it. He gives a truly transformative performance where there is not anything of Bill left and it’s scary and intimidating. His voice, his physicality, I mean the makeup he has, it’s really a wonderful character and he did beautiful character work with it.”

Okay, so live action superhero movies haven't been my jam for a few years now. My dwindling embers were practically exinguished, One-For-All-style, with Infinity War and the DCEU has been basically a trash heap (Birds of Prey was pretty good, Suicide Squad was okay to put on while doing chores, but the mainstream stuff, ugh). But I have to say, with the Superman trailer that dropped today, there is hope. Obviously, this is early, we know nothing concrete, and trailers can lie. But this looks like the first great Superman movie in decades. There is a distinct patterning -- and yet modernizing -- of the immortal Superman from 1978, and I am here for it.
Superman 1978 font, John Williams' iconic musical theme: check. (Also, drops on my birthday, nice.)
"No fucks to give" reporter Lois Lane: check. I have no idea who Rachel Brosnahan is, but she absolutely appears to capture what I would expect Margot Kidder's Lois Lane to be in 2025.
"Slightly goofy, mild-mannered reporter" Clark Kent: check. The posture, the non-cool hair, the expression, the just-slightly-off suit. They actually manage to nail it in a way that even Henry Cavill (whom I greatly respect for being a fan and wanting an authentic Superman) couldn't. Look at this guy. There's no way he could be Superman. (Unlike many movies, his hair does seem to change when he becomes Superman.)
Close ties to the adoptive family that give him the humanity and ideals he strives for instead of the philosophy of Jor-El? Check. A 64-year-old Pruitt Taylor Vince is an interesting choice for Johnathan Kent. In the 1978 film, Glenn Ford was a strong, masculine figure (despite his age) who nevertheless raised Clark on the concepts of being helpful, gentle, not showing off his powers, not crushing everyone else. But here, Johnathan is visibly aged, overweight, balding, frail and all the more imperfect. He is weak and inferior to Clark in seemingly every way except presumably his humanity.
Okay, so their Lex Luthor is not going to be Gene Hackman. That's okay, Hackman was a great Luthor for the Superfriends era, but in today's age, hokey aloofness is not what we expect. Much like the Joker, Luthor also evolves with the times. This one is driven by wealth sure, but also he just hates Superman with a passion. Nicholas Hoult (Nux from Fury Road and Beast in the modern X-Men movies) might just be able to pull it off.
Note that while this Lex appears much more serious, according to Wikipedia they're bringing back Miss Tessmacher and Otis, two of Lex's associates from the 1978 and 1980 films.
I expect a significant story moment will be Luthor using his wealth and influence to turn the public against Superman, possibly through ploys like Lexor City where Superman was tricked into destroying an energy-producing device and damaging the city in the process.
Oh, and this Luthor-Superman rivalry? Ties into something else really exciting about this movie: All Star Superman, one of the all-time great Superman stories. There are clearly elements of that story contained within this, from what looks like the threat of a Sun-Eater to Superman's robots falling in battle. And while I'd rather they did a full-on All-Star story instead of just putting little bits and pieces in here, we should take what we can get.
All-in-all, this seems like a great modern retelling of a movie that I still enjoy to this day despite its obvious cheesiness and near-camp at times. I've actually a tiny bit excited.
BONUS POINTS: they're obviously willing to have fun with the franchise despite the obvious seriousness of a murderous Luthor and border conflicts in impoverished countries. Because they're including Kypyto the Superdog:
DOUBLE BONUS POINTS: Nathan Fillion as totally authentic, clown-ass-arrogant-jerk-surprising-decent-dude Guy Gardner:

the great season 2 being SUCH an amazing season with excellent character work for its two main protagonists, especially peter, really laid the foundation that would kickstart and ensure the show's downfall if you think about it. peter and his relationship with catherine was never intended to be the main focus, but as tony mcnamara (creator) observed his two leads on set, elle fanning and nicholas hoult, and them being a match made in acting heaven, he couldn't help himself and who could blame him? and that's how season 2 was born: from a very human wish to self-indulge as a writer and have fun (despite still wanting one half of said pairing to die at some point, go figure!) like it's no wonder season 2 is the most cheerful, heartwarming and best season of the entire show! not only are peter and catherine a pure joy to watch both individually and together, but the writing is sharper, wittier, every line either a gut punch or a punchline. season 2 felt like SUCH a celebration of insanity and love with its main characters challenging each other to expand their own hearts to accept each other as they are, flaws and all. season 2 is a love story for the ages!!!! the writing wasn't shy about it and embraced its celebration of life, so season 3 being such a sad affair felt like a slap in the face after being doused in ice cold water. using anti-history as a foundation, season 2's thesis was about embracing the messiness of human nature, and inviting love in to mend the broken parts, whilst season 3 chose to unceremoniously revert back to historical accuracy, and to wallow in this cynical and jaded view of humanity, which really broke my freaking heart.
nicholas hoult was also just way TOO good at his job, and that's why we can't have nice things! no but seriously, not being able to imagine the show without him, and some viewers (like me) losing their emotional investment in the show after his character died is a testament to how great of an actor he is, and how great of a character peter had become. he arguably became the best character on the show in a way that feels almost accidental yet fated as he was always meant to be essential to the show's trajectory. in a way, both in the show and outside of it, characters and viewers alike had the hardest time mourning him, for it did feel like the sun stopped shining abruptly and matter-of-factly.
the great was such a bonkers, off the wall, marvellous and little gem of a show. i'll always look back on it fondly and i will always have too many freaking feelings about it! wouldn't it be crazy if someone started a podcast about it to dissect it and cut it open? like what if i did that? wouldn't it be crazy? would it be though?

Nosferatu Review
Nosferatu is a film that explores Victorian ideas concerning purity through one of its victims; a woman who suffered from manipulation from a monster from a young age, whose sexuality is irreparably linked to him, and who controls her own opinion of herself from a world away. The monster, the ‘Nosferatu’, is the villainy of man, one that would convince a child that her desire for closeness and affection warranted her abuse. Ellen is convinced that her sexual desire is the work of sin when, in actuality, it is normal and natural, yet due to the influence of the church’s values and a patriarchal society that seeks to keep women hidden and stagnant until a man decides he wants her. That is the real tragedy of Ellen’s character, beyond the circumstances of her death and a life lived in fear; a child was convinced that having desires made her wrong, and, therefore, warranted her suffering. Nosferatu is the vampiric nature of men, personified in a gothic monster.
Nosferatu’s murder of two young girls stuck out to me. Personally, I believe it completed Ellen’s characterisation by offering a hard truth; she would not be believed or sympathised with until she was killed. Those children spent the entire film lamenting their fear, just as Ellen did, but it wasn’t until Orlok had killed them that the audience thought twice about it. Ellen’s fear, her visions, her fits, were never taken seriously until a male character (Thomas) encountered Orlok. The scene in which we see Thomas’ blood being drunk was intentionally sexual, and his expression of fear as he was approached made it feel violating to even watch. Then, he experiences Ellen’s reality, for a short while; unable to convince others around him of what he encountered, such as Friedrich, though his experience differs due to the fact that he is able to act against the monster that violated him. Ellen never escapes it, and ends up dead and half undressed in the arms of the man that tortured her for her entire life. This serves as a message about sexual abuse, one with no happy conclusion.
This was the first film where I truly felt anything about Nicholas Hoult’s acting, and I thought he was phenomenal. He truly set the tone for this movie with his initial meeting with the count. As we don’t see Count Orlok clearly throughout the scene, we rely on Hoult’s expression, through which he delivers such visceral terror that it shook me. Thomas Hutter’s devotion to his wife and all he felt for her was clear throughout the film; he feared for her, sought to heal her, and would have given his life to free her of Nosferatu, no matter how fearful he was. I thought his performance stood out, and it was my personal favourite.
Lily-Rose Depp’s dedication to this role was phenomenal. Her fits were frightening to watch, and the melancholy nature of her character was visible in her every emotion. Her desperation to be understood was tragic beyond belief, and her fruitless search for a happy ending left such an impression upon me. Other performances I really enjoyed were Bill Skarsgård, who I didn’t even realise played Count Orlok until the credits due to how incredibly he embodied him, Willem Dafoe and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
I love the sound design within this film. Even through the breaths of the characters, you could read the film’s message; sexual or pained or terrified, all utilised to give the scene the tension it required. The audio was what made this film a horror, beyond anything we saw. It was used to perfectly capture the feelings of the characters, and in a manner that left me breathless. Additionally, the use of black and white throughout added to the gothic vibe of the film, outside of the setting and costuming. I loved that Ellen’s nightmares and her scenes with Orlok were so often in black and white; it gave her melancholy, her trauma, a physicality, and in a way validated it.
Overall, I loved Nosferatu. It explored childhood trauma, sexual abuse and the villainy of purity culture through a fictional monster, and through his victim, who found no respite from his torture. Personally, one of my biggest pet peeves is the fact that this film is reduced to a ‘monsterfucker’ movie; there is intent in Orlok’s repulsiveness, and Ellen was not attracted to him. He dominated her desire for pleasure by linking it to her trauma, which she was then deemed blasphemous for, and ruined her self opinion and made her feel hopeless until she gave in. It undermines the film’s death for the audience’s own desire, which I can’t stand when its intent is for you to feel uncomfortable at every sexually charged scene. I wouldn’t have though it would be so impossible for people to understand that, but oh well.
Also, I’m a sucker for a gothic horror – no pun intended.
