i don’t think anyone talks enough about how romantic the dance scene between elphaba and glinda really was. it’s such a pivotal moment for both of them, but especially glinda. in some ways i believe this is the moment she goes from galinda to glinda— this is the moment she begins to drop the mean girl façade and not try to force herself to see past elphaba’s differences, but face them head on and love and accept them.

she leaves behind fiyero, her friends, her judgements, inhibitions, and shame; everything that had been defining her as a character up until that moment. when glinda whispers to fiyero, “she does, she’s just good at pretending not to,” after he says elphaba doesn’t care what others think, that’s because she’s pretending too. when they dance, they become mirror images of one another. glinda copies her movements, lets elphaba guide her, and it’s their shared vulnerability that guides the crowd behind them.

and yet, it’s the first moment neither of them truly care about people’s judgements, their own perceived reputations, or anything but each other. in that moment, the crowd disappears, and all that’s left is elphaba and glinda, closer and more intimate than either of them have ever been with anyone. in my mind, that’s the moment they really fell in love

today i am thinking about the inherent devastating nature of the song, “one short day” in wicked and how, despite its upbeat sound and feel, the lyrics are meant to foreshadow the little time that these characters have, not only in the emerald city living out their dreams, but together as friends (or potential lovers etc). in the end, they really only had one short day. one day to live out their wildest dreams and fantasies together before they’d essentially be split up forever, because regardless of what happens after this, they’re both permanently changed in ways that cannot truly be reconciled. but anyway

I don't think I've ever taken in before how much Wicked Act I (and thus Wicked Part I) takes its structure from The Wizard of Oz. It opens with No One Mourns the Wicked, which is an obvious response to Ding Dong the Witch is Dead* (the first song once Dorothy gets to Oz, and only the second overall), and ends with our heroes arriving in the Emerald City (Merry Old Land of Oz/One Short Day). Our hero is then asked to perform a task so that the wizard will grant her heart's desire. Having completed this task, she then discovers that he is a fraud and that he cannot do what he's promised (nor could he have done the task he set her), so she has to make use of the power that was inside her all along to get where she needs to go.

*Bonus connection between these two songs is the little musical motif ("ding dong the witch is") that the movie version of No One Mourns the Wicked uses in its newly triumphant orchestration at the start (roughly 1:01 and 1:19 in the official soundtrack).

Since people are really excited for the coffee shop au I figured I'd tell you what I'm currently working on (haven't started posting yet) that I'm gonna finish before I write that one You know how Jou canonically has an insane sense of smell? Anzu and Honda both tease him about it, usually when he smells food no one else can, and that one time he figured out Mai's trick with the perfumes as well. Concept:

Mai owns a duel monsters themed perfume shop (the perfumes on her cards basically are a 1:1, the perfumes are named after her cards, or rather she designed perfumes based on her cards).

Jou can recognize what each of her cards smells like. He thinks this is a Normal Skill that everyone who duels Mai enough would of course pick up (it's not)

When Mai realizes this, and later realizes that Jou not only has a good nose but a decent sense of what other people like, she hires him

They work together to make a Blue Eyes White Dragon perfume and without Jou knowing Mai sends a personal sample to Kaiba, who loves it and is quite vexed at the fact because he knows who made it

But oh nooo.... it's a duel monster's themed perfume shop.... and Kaiba owns everything duel monsters so... darn... he's just gonna have to become a shareholder

Mai thrives, because now she has tons of money to do with what she will and she gets to see Jou and Kaiba snapping at each other as she uses her powers for evil (aka matchmaking)

I know jack squat about perfumes so shoutout to @ottermelonart because on top of art they have a fantastic perfume shop that can be found here and I've asked permission to use their scents in said fanfic (renamed as duel monster cards in the fic, which I'll give the real names for in the notes with links to their shop) because I kid you not they don't have a single smell I dislike. Serious professionals over there, and delightful to talk to during cons.

found a bootleg where in the title it says who's playing the leads, but JUST the actor's initials, and im not THRILLED at how quickly i 1. went "oh, sjb, stephanie j block!" and then 2. "oh fuck yeah, i gotta see this version if she's in it"

took less than a second. brainrot. i've seen bootlegs of this show a few times already. it's the same goddamn show. i know that woman's name by heart, apparently. the layers of knowledge needed for this. it's titled as a Slime Tutorial and i just know what that means. i think this shit is taking up the space in my brain where basic math is supposed to be.
