ok I have A Lot of thoughts about the staircase confession (well really about Edwin's whole character arc, but all roads lead to rome) but for now I just wanna say that, yes, I was bracing myself for something to go terribly wrong when I first watched it, and yes, part of me was initially worried its placement might be an uncharacteristically foolish choice made in the name of Drama or Pacing or Making a Compelling Episode of Television but at the expense of narrative sense--
But I wanna say that having taken all that into account, and watched it play out, and sat with it - and honestly become rather transfixed by it - I really think it's a beautifully crafted moment and truly the only way that arc could've arrived at such a satisfying conclusion.
And if I had to pinpoint why I not only buy it but also have come to really treasure it, I'd have to put it down to the fact that it genuinely is a confession, and nothing else.
That moment is an announcement of what Edwin has come to understand about himself, but because it takes the form of a character admitting romantic feelings for such a close friend, I think it can be very easy, when writing that kind of thing, to imbue it with other elements like a plea or a request or even the start of a new relationship that, intentionally or not, would change the shape of the moment and can quickly overshadow what a huge deal the telling is all on its own. But that's not the case here. Since it is only a confession, unaccompanied by anything else, and since we see afterward how it was enough, evidently, to fix the strangeness that had grown between him & Charles, we're forced to understand that it was never Edwin's feelings that were actually making things difficult for him - it was not being able to tell Charles about them. 'Terrified' as he's been of this, Edwin learns that his feelings don't need to either disappear completely or be totally reciprocated in order for him to be able to return to the peace, stability, and security of the relationship with which he defines his existence - and the scale of that relief a) tells us a hell of a lot about Edwin as a character and b) totally justifies the way his declaration just bursts out of him at what would otherwise be such a poorly chosen moment, in my opinion.
Whether or not they are or ever could be reciprocated, Edwin's feelings are definitively proven not to be the problem here - only his potential choice to bottle it up - his repression - is. And where that repression had once been mainly involuntary, a product of what he'd been through, now that he's got this new awareness of himself, if he still fails to admit what he's found either to himself or to the one person he's so unambiguously close with, then that repression will be by his own choice and actions.
And he won't do that. Among other things, he's coming into this scene having just (unknowingly) absolved the soul of his own school bully and accidental killer by pointing out a fact that is every bit as central to his self-discovery as anything about his sexuality or his attraction to Charles is: the idea that "If you punish yourself, everywhere becomes Hell"
So narratively speaking, of course it makes sense that Edwin literally cannot get out of Hell until he stops punishing himself - and right now, the thing that's torturing him is something he has control over. It's not who he is or what he feels, but what he chooses to do with those feelings that's hurting him, and he's even already made the conscious choice to tell Charles about them, he was just interrupted. But now that they're back together and he's literally in the middle of an attempt to escape Hell, there is absolutely no way he can so much as stop for breath without telling Charles the truth. Even the stopping for breath is so loaded - because they're ghosts, they don't need to breathe, but also they're in Hell, so the one thing they can feel is pain, however nonsensical. And Edwin certainly is in pain. But whether he knows what he's about to do or not when he says he 'just needs a tick,' a breather is absolutely not what's gonna give him enough relief to keep climbing - it's fixing that other hurt, though, that will.
Like everything else in that scene, there's a lot of layers to him promising Charles "You don't have to feel the same way, I just needed you to know" - but I don't think that means it isn't also true on a surface level. It's the act of telling Charles that matters so much more than whatever follows it, and while that might have gone unnoticed if anything else major had happened in the same conversation, now we're forced to acknowledge its staggering and singular importance for what it is. The moment is well-earned and properly built up to, but until we see it happen in all its wonderful simplicity, and we see the aftermath (or lack thereof, even), we couldn't properly anticipate how much of a weight off Edwin's shoulders merely getting to share the truth with Charles was going to be, why he couldn't wait for a better, safer opportunity before giving in to that desire, or how badly he needed to say it and nothing else - and I really, really love the weight that act of just being honest, seen, and known is given in their story/relationship.
#dead boy detectives#edwin payne#the case of the very long stairway#im sorry this really IS the short version of my thoughts i swear#i didnt want to get long and rambley backing everything up and mentioning everything else this forces me to reconsider#i just feel like i've barely interacted w this fandom and still seen quite a few odd duck takes on this moment imo#i dont think he wouldntve got the nerve to say it otherwise#(he was already going to! & if anything his new experiences in hell only cement that being the right choice)#and as much as i get what fear can do to a person i still definitely dont think he was resigned to staying in hell if charles reacted badly#i truly think he just couldnt keep it to himself any longer#the show is upfront about his escaping hell being a testament to his own strength rather than a lucky break of some sort#so i think even being on the receiving end of a rescue mission getting out still must take a lot of strength in this universe#and telling charles that definitely made him stronger/in less pain#so yeah totally necessary it happened where and when it did in my book#also i hope it doesnt sound like im being dismissive of anything charles says in this scene#but the way i see it those were all things they both already knew#so reaffirming them just adds to the idea that the act of Telling Each Other Things is what's so important here#rather than counting as a truly separate thing this conversation achieves#just my two cents

Vulcan Fashion/Hair Insp
#I think I did something like this a few years ago??? so consider this an update that's easier on the eyes hehehe#star trek#vulcan fashion#ref#I think a lot of people associate Vulcans with minimalist no color but I've seen plenty of Vulcans#wearing color & patterns in their civilian clothes: T'Pol and T'Pau and Tuvok for example#and Sarek's fashion is quite gaudy with a lot of jewelry and intricate stitching#Also I think Vulcans would utilize a lot of headscarfs/headcoverings in their fashion because it's necessary on their planet#but sometimes they wear them purely for aesthetic reasons - like it's usually a component in an outfit even if it doesn't do anything#Feel free to reblog~!!!

I know that people are rarely their best selves at a funeral, but do you ever just watch your family move through the process of mourning the Patriarch and have a sudden and violent and vivid understanding of Why Everyone Is The Way They Are
#it doesn't really matter if the answer is yes or no#because the thing is i am watching my family disintegrate in the wake and wreckage of disability/chronic illness#and i am feeling a grief and a rage that i cannot quite cope with#i am feeling many things and I am extremely drunk on vodka and tequila and red wine and i spent all day emotionally regulating#the worlds most fucking fucked up audhd genetic pool i've ever seen in my life#i don't quite know how to cope with the things that have happened today and as busy as my brain is given all that i prolly shouldn't have#had quite so many substances#the crossfade is far superior to being sober around my family and apparently despite it all i wasn't too incoherent#i was a blubbering baby the whole funeral tho#and i did spend the whole reception trying to manage a pots episode and the whole after party trying to stabilize my cousins#i don't know where in all this I will really be able to grieve my uncle himself#but honestly part of the issue on that is that i am feeling rather upset with and disappointed in the few people in my family who I had come#to trust over the years#chrissy and jenn are still everything i knew them to he#*be#and everyone else.....well#the people i knew before at least#fucking intergenerational trauma - the musical

i've been thinking a lot about the word "representation" and what it means and how it's changed over the last few years, particularly when it comes to the writing/publishing landscape but also in movies and tv shows… and i really don't like it anymore. to be clear, of course i think it's important to have diversity in your work, i'm not saying i hate the concept of representation. but i do really dislike the way it's used now, and i really just hate the word itself
in a broader sense it's just become a marketing tool. i'm not impressed by any publisher or author who just describes their book by listing all of the minorities/identities the characters represent as if that should be enough. it feels very gross, very exploitative and disingenuous. it also really bothers me because it's always marginalized identities- which i understand Why, but it feels very othering to me (and again. Very exploitative as an advertisement). you would never list out "cishet able-bodied white man" as a character description to pat yourself on the back over. so why do it to everyone else? why insinuate that one is the "default" and the other one is "special"? (and when i say this i'm mainly talking about advertisements/marketing. i understand why people would specify about characters in descriptions with the plot, but i don't like to see an ad that's just "this book has gay people!" with nothing else)
which then leads me to my other point, which is that a lot of people treat "representation" as if it's "too hard." like "oh i don't know enough to write about that, i don't have that experience, etc" which is a fair way to feel! however… it's weird that people only say this about writing trans characters or characters of color. i'm writing a story right now with a character who is really into motorcycles. i personally do not know that much about motorcycles, so i researched what parts are what & what different kinds of models there are & what basic bike care looks like. i guarantee Most people will have to google something at some point in their writing process. so what's the problem? it also, again, feels very othering when authors treat certain groups of people as "impossible" to write, "too hard" to understand. they are just.. people. you write them as a person. and then you figure out the rest later.
and i think part of the refusal or fear to write something outside of your experience is because of the way representation is treated as So Special. these characters are So Special that they aren't allowed to be anything other than "representation." they're Not allowed to be characters with complex emotions and interesting motivations, they have to just be Trans or Gay or Disabled or whatever. they're not allowed to be people. which means, at the end of the day, we loop right back around to where we were at the start….
there is bad representation. there are depictions of certain marginalized people that are harmful and that are damaging, i'm not trying to minimize that or argue against it at all, in fact we should all be mindful of that while writing and reading. but i also think it's possible to swing too far in the opposite direction as well and put certain groups of people on a pedestal and not allow them to do anything at all but be Perfect Representation, if that makes sense.
#anyways. is this anything#sorry i dont have anything insightful to say at the end here i just wanted to ramble#especially abt the way ppl market books now it like. genuinely disgusts me#cannot imagine marketing tnp in that way. my characters are many things AND they are trans. and their transness#is not just a flashy feature for attracting attention#also i do understand the fear of 'getting it wrong' but that's why you have beta readers or even actual sensitivity readers#that's why you ask for feedback. especially in this space like... people will give it#that's what makes sharing your process and early draft in this community so rewarding#and there's also just the reality that no matter what you do some people will Not like it 🤷#and ime a lot of ppl look at representation very individualistically#as in it's only good representation if it represents Me#which sucks. and you're never going to please those people#ANYWAYS also to be clear this is not a vague or meant to be targeted at any one person please don't be fucking weird#this is just some thots i've had recently esp since ive seen the representation conversation pop up quite a few times#and since i've been doing research for characters in my other project#personal

Do you have a preference for top Obi-Wan or top Anakin in obikin? And if so, why? I'm new to the fandom and ship, and it seems that top Anakin is very popular. I've always imagined him bottoming more often for Obi-Wan, although I like to think they switch occasionally
i very much do not have a preference or an opinion on this! i read and write either - the important thing for me is that they're recognizable to my understanding of the characters and i don't see either of them as massively frail, demure, twinky, etc so that's usually the stuff i don't read or interact with (and i've moved away dom/sub stuff currently) though more power to you if that's what you like! to me, their sexual positions in bed do not make up a big part of their characters, so i really can switch between both and enjoy it all.
it's just not the interesting part of a story for me, and honestly (and i know this is controversial or what passes for controversial in a fandom lol) i don't tend to tag my explicit fics with who is topping and who is bottoming if there's penetrative sex involved - especially for longer fics because the story isn't about that in my mind. it's a very small aspect of it and the least important part
i do think i've seen a lot of conflating dom/sub with top/bottom lately and that's a trend that comes and goes like waves and also a trend i very much dislike. i definitely have stronger views on conflating dom/sub and top/bottom than i have on who should top and who should bottom LOL
#asks#and all those strong views can be boiled down to don't do that#also i wouldn't say one is more popular than the other#i think sometimes i see a lot of one over the other and it's just because i noticed it and now i see it everywhere#confirmation bias (not actually called confirmation bias probably)#like im sure there are not 1 million posts where anakin is a subby bottom (used interchangeably)#but i've noticed it once and now i feel like i see it everywhere because i'm hypersensitive to it#i guess my final point is that my bestest understanding of their fictional romantic relationship#wouldn't be that they switch occasionally#but that they would quite literally switch all the time because their romantic dynamics are separate from their top/bottom preferences#and honestly ive seen that opinion a lot lately#and im so happy about it lol#cause a few years ago that was not something i saw floating around LOL

people really do not know what they're talking about when it comes to Elizabeth Woodville's social status, huh?
#yes Elizabeth was without a doubt considered too low-born to be queen#no she was not a commoner and nobody actually called her that during her life (so I'm not sure why people are claiming that they did?)#Elizabeth's social status was not a problem in itself; it was a problem in the context of queenship and marrying into royalty#Context is important in this and for literally everything else when it comes to analyzing history. Any discussion is worthless without it.#obviously pop culture-esque articles claiming that she was 'a commoner who captured the king's heart' are wrong; she wasn't#But emphasizing that ACTUALLY she was part of the gentry with a well-born mother and just leaving it at that as some sort of “GOTCHA!”#is equally if not more irresponsible and entirely irrelevant to discussions of the actual time period we're studying.#Elizabeth *was* considered unworthy and unacceptable as queen precisely because of her lower social status#her father and brother had literally been derided as social-climbers by Salisbury Warwick and Edward himself just a few years earlier#the Woodvilles' marriage prospects clearly reflected their status (and 'place') in society: EW herself had first married a knight and all#siblings married within the gentry to people of a similar status. compare that to the prestigious marriages arranged after EW became queen#Elizabeth having a lower social status was not 'created' by propaganda against her; it fueled and shaped propaganda against her#that's a huge huge difference; it's irresponsible and silly to conflate the two as I've seen a recent tumblr post cavalierly do#like I said she was considered too low-born to be queen long before any of the propaganda Warwick Clarence or Richard put out against her#and the fact that Elizabeth was targeted on the basis of her social status was in itself novel and unprecedented#no queen before her was ever targeted in such a manner; Clearly Elizabeth was considered notably 'different' in that regard#(and was quite literally framed as the enemy and destroyer of 'the old royal blood of this realm' and all its actual 'inheritors' like..)#ngl this sort of discussion always leaves a bad taste in my mouth#because it's not like England and France (et all) are at war or consider each other mortal enemies in the 21st century#both are in fact western european imperialistic nations who've been nothing but a blight to the rest of the world including my own country#yet academic historians clearly have no problem contextualizing the xenophobia that medieval foreign queens faced as products of their time#and sympathizing with them accordingly (Eleanor of Provence; Joan of Navarre; Margaret of Anjou; etc)(at least by their own historians)#Nor were foreign queens the “worst” targets of xenophobia: that was their attendants or in times of war commoners or soldiers#who actually had to bear the brunt of English aggression#queens were ultimately protected and guaranteed at least a veneer of dignity and respect because of their royal status#yet once again historians and people have no problem contextualizing and understanding their difficulties regardless of all this#so what is the problem with contextualizing the classism *Elizabeth* faced and understanding *her* difficulties?#why is the prejudice against her constantly diminished & downplayed? (Ive never even seen any historian directly refer to it as 'classism')#after all it was *Elizabeth* who was more vulnerable than any queen before her due to her lack of powerful foreign or national support#and Elizabeth who faced a form of propaganda distinctly unprecedented for queens. it SHOULD be emphasized more.

pro life tip: rewatching cooking crush when feeling bad will turn a shitty day into better one 💚
#axelle rants#cooking crush#a hill I'll die on is how great this show is#frankly I love it even more on a rewatch#even tho the story is quite basic it still subverted quite a few tropes#like having them not win the competition even if it vindicates their asshole classmates#by having prem and ten meet even when ten is sent far away so we don't get the usual 'they didn't contact each other at all for months'#even samsee getting mad & almost not coming to the competition was well done imo#and I still stand by the fact that tenprem are the healthiest ship I've ever seen I love them sm#actually every character in the show is very mature & open to changing themselves I really appreciate it#(and yes I DID shed tears as always when I finish an offgun show - even when I've already seen them - but I'm especially weak today lol)

dude i don't really care if people ship aroace characters just please acknowledge that they're aro and/or ace. like,, aro and ace people still can and do enter into relationships of various types at times and not every aro or ace person completely lacks attraction anyway and some date even if they do, so like, ship them if thats what you want but please just be respectful.
just acknowledge that the character is aro and/or ace. do some research about what that might mean for them if you need to. treat those characters in a way that respects their identities and doesn't completely brush them aside.
im just tired. we can be in relationships. we can not be in relationships. we are still aros and aces. dont try and erase what little representation we get.
i would like to note that i see things in this way because i have never seen a 'professional' writer (like non-fanfic or not a small online creator) specify where an aro/ace character sits on those spectrums or how they actually view relationships of any type. i've also never seen any 'professional' writer's characters get to explore or express that part of themselves enough in their stories to give much better an understanding than just "not really interested in sex or romance".
if a more specific understanding of a character was provided and it meant that that character wouldn't be involved in romantic and/or sexual relationships or was repulsed by them than yeah, I wouldn't want people shipping them at all but i dont think i've ever seen that so thats not what this is about.
#this is mostly about one character because theyre on my mind atm but i've absolutely seen it happen to others#its just really disheartening to have confirmed representation and then see so much of a fandom ignore that because they want to ship thing#i love this character as rep as well. i think they capture certain things for me really well#i almost never come across it but pairings of characters whether romantic or something else are really fun when written from an aroace lens#but thats not what i see happening with what i'm thinking about#its just infuriating to see so much of the fandom accept certain details that were revealed in a certain way but then argue that this-#-character's orientation hasn't been confirmed anywhere when it was revealed in the exact same way#just say you don't care about respecting us at this point man#if you know what character im referencing here about then uhhhhh cool#i hope no one minds me tagging these next few#aromantic#asexual#arospec#acespec#aroace#might remove those in a bit idk i get quite nervous being perceived sometimes

hacks feels like an amalgam of glow, dead to me and grace and frankie IF each of those had leaned into the gay properly (regarding the two mains) and hadn't gotten canceled abruptly.
#it's s bit confusing (the relationship between them) but so far it feels pretty honest#like they might be actually trying to tell a story and not making every body wait for no reason other than keeping people perpetually hangi#like#is it sexual? sure. overtly and right there on the text#but it's hesitance to go one way or another feels natural tbh#from what i've seen it really picks up in season 3#so we'll wait and see#hacks#not sure if glow is the only one that got canceled like that#dead to me had a shitty ending that i'd like to ignore though#last season was great it was just the shitty ending#from what i remember at least#not sure about grace and frankie#i think they got quite a few seasons in#dead to me#glow#grace and frankie

the thing abt mizu is that she is extremely non-binary in such a genderqueer way that she has homoerotic energy w men and extremely sapphic energy w women.
#i know this is gross simplification bc mizu's relationship to womanhood is quite a few layers of complicated#bc she has never been allowed to be human let alone woman in a society where mixed race is seen as a greater condemnation than womanhood#and a lot of her dressing up as a man is to save herself from the reach of said misogyny which wont let her be addressed as a woman#but sure be dehumanized as one.#but it is funny to think of how homoerotically charged her interactions w taigen are. as opposed to her interactions w women. w akemi.#i have not finished the show yet i've still quite a few eps to go. but god her being mixed race has been so incredibly isolating.#she struggles w intimacy she feels like she has to do everything alone bc who in the world wouldnt hate her? would not turn her in for coin#her easily clockable ethnicity has challenged both her ability to live w womanhood#and be a part of womanhood in a society where women are treated so poorly.#anyway this is a joke post simply to comment on how mizu's chemistry w taigen is as opposed to mizu's chemistry w akemi#i'd beseech you to not take it seriously. like i said. its a gross simplification. and this is a joke post.#im watching blue eye samurai and the art style is pretty cool

I've absolutely missed everything to do with this, but why the hell are people wanting the show to get cancelled?!
Don't like?
DON'T WATCH
Is that so fucking hard to grasp?
Without new fans, media dies
Whether or not you like a certain adaptation, you should be happy it's introducing new blood (pun intended) to the source media
Sure, people are gonna have their favourite versions. Some people may not want to read the source material. Some people may not want to see the film. Similarly, some people may not want to see the show
But it's keeping it alive
And some of the new fans are gonna dive into the source material and love it
The brilliant thing is, you can love and respect all versions of something. That's possible. That's great!
And on the other hand you can dislike a certain version of something yet still remain civil and kind to others who enjoy it. That's also great (with a strong emphasis on the 'remain civil and kind to others' part)!
Infighting in fan spaces is only ever going to end badly. Don't like an adaption? Don't be a dick, just be civil and move on
And more importantly, if you love something (like the source material) so much to be so passionate about it, you should at the very least be happy it's not being forgotten
#I say this as someone who loves the film and book (am making my way through the novels currently on IWtV) AND adores the TV series#I've just logged on and seen quite a few posts about this#I'm absolutely out of the loop as to what the hell has gone on so I'm sorry if I've missed anything big#but idk why the hell fans can't just be civil to one anothwr#there are people on the other side of the damn screen#and people seem to forget you can noy#iwtv#amc iwtv#sorry for the rant I'm just so sick of fan spaces being toxic waste sites#toxicity in fandom is the quickest way to kill said fandom
