The Last Grand Theft
Here in AO3
Summary:
In a world where Tim lost his parents and was never Robin, the only ones who reached out to him were Bernard and the Dowd family, Tim owes them for taking him in and Bernard too owes them for allowing him to help the person he loves most in the world. They will go out of their way to show that they are helpful and can be trusted. It doesn't matter if helping pull off muggings and robberies in Gotham City is the way to do it!, it's what you do for family, right?
-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-
"Speed up, Red, speed up!" yells Prod as he shoots for the car window and Tim hits the pedal and drives in reverse, making the streets just a blur of indistinguishable lights. Tim only has eyes to dodge the vehicles that cut across mid-street as they flee from the greatest threat of a Gothamite criminal.
The Bats.
As a child, Tim had imagined a thousand times to be one of Gotham's protectors, flying through the air as the city shone beneath his feet, growing up and helping under the guidance of the incredible bat and his ever-growing flock of birds, making a name for himself in the world's superhero and vigilante community.
Never in his wildest dreams had he imagined that his parents would end up dead in an attack that Batman and Robin failed to stop when he was fourteen and then he would be sent into the system, spending a couple of years bouncing from house to house until Bernard managed to convince his father and mother to help him.
He would never have guessed that the reason his parents had been so reluctant to take him in wasn't because they hated him or resented his friendship with Bernard...It was because....
"Stop!" shouts Spoiler's female, imposing voice as he tries and fails to fire his grappling hook into the tires of their armored vehicle, flanking them with his motorcycle on the left as Black Bat's shadowy figure swooped in from the right in his own Bat-branded vehicle.
"Holy shit!" Prod or better known as Bernard Dowd, her boyfriend, exclaims as he extends his hand towards the inside of the vehicle, in Tim's direction "Red, the rubber bomb!"
Tim hurries to pass her the little green beads of his own invention, recently perfected and watches as his partner tosses them towards Spoiler's motorcycle and a blast of the synthetic compound gets tangled in the front tire of her Spoiler-Cycle causing her to lose speed and be forced to brake.
One less danger, but Black Bat is still in the race.
The quietest and second most dangerous bat after Batman (Who is being distracted across town by Mr. and Mrs. Dowd) swoops in. He jumps onto the hood of the vehicle and clings with the black claws of his suit to the metal of the car trying to grab Bernard. Tim pulls his friend inside the vehicle and closes the armored window, while both activate the air filtering mechanism of their masks to avoid being sedated with the capsule that Black Bat managed to sneak in before the window finished closing.
Tim begins to shake the vehicle dangerously, trying to dislodge Black Bat from its hood, when they hear on their communicators Mr. and Mrs. Dowd speak.
"Cargo secured Prod, Red, you may return to base."
Both friends look at each other and nod and Bernard presses the red button which causes the car's roof to detach, throwing Black Bat onto the road. Tim made sure to slow down a bit so the vigilante wasn't going to get seriously hurt, but he still grimaces as he sees her bounce several times on the street before they turn the corner and lose sight of her.
"Performing maneuver D-r345" Tim answers the comm.
"Roger, over and out."
The maneuver is basically to lose any trace of the bats and abandon the vehicle in a designated area where the self-destruct mechanism will activate and erase any evidence and clues that the bats could exploit to find them or discover their identities.
Two hours later, civilians Tim and Bernard arrive home as the bats are just finding the smoldering remains of their vehicle.
"We're home, mom, dad!" exclaims Bernard happily as both boys enter the kitchen where a luscious smell is flooding the house
"Welcome, children" smiles Mrs. Dowd warmly as she tastes the food in the slow cooker and nods in satisfaction "Just in time to celebrate children!"
Both boys take their places at the table as Mr. Dowd comes up from the basement with a bottle of expensive wine and laughs jovially.
"Another successful mission, boys" he celebrates "All thanks to you."
"Oh, it's no big deal... Henry" Tim still has trouble addressing the adults in his life by first name, but he tries "You were the ones who stood up to Batman."
"No dear" Mrs. Dowd shakes her head "Without yours and my son's inventions we couldn't have done it, that sticky liquid actually worked pretty well, Batman couldn't get off the ground fast enough to stop us!" she laughs, pleased remembering Batman cursing as he remained glued to the ground and Robin growling in anger when he suffered a similar fate.
Once upon a time, Tim would have imagined using his brains and inventions to help the bats. Now, all his efforts are devoted to sabotaging them so his boyfriend's family can get away with stealing and destroying shit in Gotham.
Whatever. It's not like he owes the Bat or his pack anything, he thinks angrily when he remembers being at his parents' funeral after Batman failed them, alone and lost enduring the hungry gaze of his parents' associates who couldn't wait to divvy up the leftovers of their wealth.
"It will be a small glass for each of you until you turn 18, boys" Mr. Dowd says as he uncorked the bottle and began pouring wine into the glasses "But you deserve to celebrate with us this great achievement boys, I'm proud of you two"
He was definitely proud as the vault in his basement held several bars of gold and diamonds, stolen directly from the Gotham City Bank.
Tim smiled, feeling that refreshing sense of pride that accompanied Bernard's father's praise. He glanced out of the corner of his eye at his boyfriend and realized he was smiling too, because they had both fought so hard to help the family and deserved to have their accomplishments recognized.
"Now we just have to relax, until the next opportunity" Mrs. Dowd says softly as she finishes putting the food on the table and claps her hands to let everyone know that dinner is about to begin "I hope you are concentrating on your studies, boys, although I know I don't have to worry about you, my little geniuses."
Tim smiles and then his mind travels back in time to the moment Bernard called him on his old, broken phone and exclaimed loudly and excitedly that his parents had finally agreed to take him into their home, so he wouldn't keep hopping from foster home to foster home.
He remembers being terribly frightened, carrying only a backpack with what few clothes he had and an old photo of his parents (he had discarded all photos of Batman after they failed him so terribly), only to be taken to the basement that very night and Tim was horrified, thinking they were going to murder him.
"If you're going to be one of us, Timothy" he remembers Mr. Dowd saying in a stern voice "Then you have to know who the Dowd family are."
Then they revealed to him who they were. A gang of bank and museum robbers. At the time they weren't famous enough to have a name of their own, but Tim already knew of a couple of heists committed by them.
"We are trusting you with such an important secret only because our son has begged us to trust you, we expect you to reciprocate in kind" the "and if you don't..." had been heavily implied.
But Tim no longer had anything to lose and his admiration for Batman had died along with his parents, so he welcomed this new life with open arms and strove along with Bernard to prove to the Dowd's that he was useful.
They had both succeeded. Bernard had even confessed to him that since Tim had been with them, his parents had become more proud of Bernard since they had made themselves useful and devised new devices and codes and plans so that the heists managed to get bigger and bigger and the family made their own name.
They had gone from being ordinary thieves to practically Rogues in their own right.
Dinner passed in lively conversation, everyone casually commenting on certain parts of their recent heist, which had gone perfectly and needed a polish for the next opportunity.
Dinner ends and they are both sent to their rooms while Mr. and Mrs. Dowd go down to the basement, probably to count and record the winnings.
Tim and Bernard lie down together (they are allowed to sleep together if they keep the door open) and Bernard rests his head on his boyfriend's chest.
"Do you think we'll be able to quit when we go to college?"
"...I hope so."
They had both talked about it and even though it was a little while before high school was over, neither of them really wanted to devote their lives to crime.
"Just..." Bernard whispers "I think if we keep going like this one day they're going to want more than we can handle and we're all going to get screwed."
"...But we don't want to let them down...we have to reciprocate everything they've done for us" Tim recites, because it's the truth. They can't just abandon them like this, they took care of Tim when no one else would.
Bernard nods, both aware that they can only hope they'll be allowed to get out of it safely, before it's too late.
But six months later, Tim and Bernard were led by Mr. and Mrs. Dowd to the basement base and after putting a stack of folders, index cards and maps on the table, they were given the instructions for their new objective.
"We're going to pull off our biggest heist to date" Mrs. Dowd says, all sharp smiles and hunger on her face.
"What's it all about, Dad?"
"We're going to kidnap one of Bruce Wayne's sons and use him to open his private vault in the Wayne Enterprises building."
Holy Shit.

— excerpt from Stranger Things 4: Chapter One: The Hellfire Club.
♡
Eddie is too busy playing D&D with the boys to have any idea what you're up to. It’s just what you wanted, though. Means everything is going according to plan.
“I put a spell on you, because you’re mine.”
Excitement brews within you as you slip on the red DEVIL WOMAN set from Nocturna. When you're done, Max helps to straighten your hair, maintaining it with a generous amount of hairspray, while Chrissy helps you set the final touches of your makeup into place.
"What's up with the blindfold?" Max inquires, nodding towards the piece of cloth tied around your wrist.
"Part of my act," you explain ominously. "I plan on using it on Henry for the first part of my set. He's a...sensitive guy, to say the least."
"You are way too good at this," your sister shakes her head in disbelief, brushing through your hair one last time.
"Intense emotions spark creativity," you shrug, admiring the vixen that is you in the vanity. "No man is leaving unscathed tonight."
It all rings true. Tonight, you have the power. And all of Hellfire is going to know it.
"Well you look absolutely soul-snatching," Chrissy hoots as she takes a good look at you. “You’re gonna have him on his knees.”
You bite your lip in anticipation. " Who? Eddie or Henry?"
"Both," she shrugs. "But since we're on that topic, I just know Eddie is going to come crawling back."
The three of you share a malicious giggle with one another, thinking about all the ways Eddie is going to crumble, seeing another man enjoy you in the set that he bought. He had his chance to commit to you, but now he has to face the consequences of what happens when he doesn't man up on time.
The dressing room door opens. By instinct, you turn to see who it is. In struts Nina, counting the dollar bills in her hands as she just emerged from doing her set at the tip rail.
"Oooh look at you go!" you whistle. "They're loving you out there, mama."
"I'm literally so shook," Nina raves, tucking her bills away into her bag. "This is my best night thus far."
When she's all squared away, Nina makes her way over to you and envelopes you in a warm hug. "You look so fucking sexy! Go kill it out there, girl."
You smile at the compliment, heart fluttering in a room full of girls' girls.
"Thank you, sweetheart," you respond to her, rubbing her back with the utmost adoration. "You too."
Chrissy helps you don your cloak, shielding you from giving away the trick you have up your sleeve. After one final check in the mirror, you're ready to put on a show.
"Ready," you announce with a mischievous grin.
“Go get him, tiger,” Chrissy pats your back.
“You better stop the things you do, I ain’t lyin’. No, I ain’t lyin’”
Your heels click with intention across the cool floor of the club as you strut towards your victim. He's smiling and laughing with all his friends, unsuspecting of the stake you're about to, figuratively, drive through his heart.
"Good game, gentlemen," Eddie concludes as he and the boys wrap up their campaign. "I’ll see you all next week for Rise of Kas. Try not to die in that one, yeah?"
You watch as the younger guys scatter to prep for the rush. Steve and Eddie stay behind to clean up the area. When Steve sees you, he offers you a tender side hug before issuing a kiss hello to your forehead.
"Hey you," Steve smiles.
"Hey," your eyes gleam up at him. "Didn't know you play D&D."
Eddie's eyes travel up to you the moment he hears your voice. He freezes in place the moment you meet his gaze. If he reacted this way to just you with your cloak on — exalting and apologetic — you can't even begin to imagine the look on his face when he sees what you have under it.
But until time brings you to that point, you settle for feigning dissastisfaction while he attempts to strike up a casual conversation.
"He doesn’t, I was just showing him the ropes,” Eddie chuckles, nervously resting his hands at his sides. “He’s doing great though.”
You nod absentmindedly, diverting your attention to Steve ‘The Hair’ Harrington instead.
"You look beautiful, Hargrove," your boss attempts. "More than usual, I mean. Absolutely stunning.”
You can tell he’s already regretful about how he worded things a couple nights ago. The guilt on his face is like no other. But with the guilt comes those eyes. Those charming eyes that will get you to fold every time. Tonight is the exception.
"Thanks," you utter emptily to him.
"You got main stage tonight?"
"No, I've got a semi-private dance," you respond as-a-matter-of-factly.
"Semi-priv..." Eddie tries to figure it out. "What do you mean by that?"
"Hello, hello," a familiar voice greets you guys.
Right on schedule.
Henry makes his way over to you all with the biggest grin on his face. It's weird seeing him in outside clothes. He's dressed in a white t-shirt and black leather jacket, tight black jeans, and black combat boots. The blonde deity flashes you a seductive look.
"Days bleeding into one another again, Creel?" Eddie questions. "You're not on today, remember?"
"Oh yeah, I know," Henry shrugs. "I have a dance today with one of our special friends."
"Oh shit!" Eddie exclaims, going over to give him a celebratory fist bump. "Chrissy agreed to give you one?"
"No, not Chrissy," you chime in. "Me!"
Eddie's eyes widen. Steve's eyes widen.
"Holy shit!" Steve says. "Creel is actually getting a lap dance! That's so out of his comfort zone."
Steve's arms wrap around your waist as he pulls you in front of him. You feel his hardened cock sneak up against your ass.
"And from Shy Girl too?" Steve's voice deepens, rasp factor at an all time high. "You're in for a treat."
"Wouldn't expect any less," Henry blushes.
Henry’s voice is soft, but there’s a hunger in his gaze. Eddie tries to conceal how bothered he is. You see him frantically scanning the club for a sort of scapegoat, a way in delaying the nightmare that is about to ensue.
“Actually…” Eddie clears his throat. “Now that I think about it, we might get busy within the hour. You mind clocking in for a bit to help Jim out front?”
Henry cocks a puzzled brow. “Jim was playing Candy Crush when I dapped him up at the door. Mans is fine.”
“Yeah, the man is fine, Eddie,” you jeer. “And Henry’s been working sooo hard, it’s the least I can do for him.”
Your boss’s jaw clenches when he realizes his plan has fallen through. He’s got no scapegoat, you're dressed like revenge overdue, and his friends are insistent on watching this dance…
He’s screwed.
"If you insist," Eddie mutters sharply. “Tip her well, Creel.”
“Of course, man.”
Eddie excuses himself but remains in the area like a fly on the wall. He scrambles around, greeting regulars with a handshake and dusting off tables, anything to look busy and unbothered by the idea that his presence doesn't affect you the slightest.
But he is seething. Troubled. He can’t read you or your next move and it’s driving him mad.
While you coordinate your routine with the DJ, Argyle escapes from the kitchen. You hear him eagerly yelp when he discovers that Henry is getting a dance, followed by a determined, "I've gotta watch this".
And now that everything is going to plan, you take a moment to gather yourself backstage.
Before you head out, Nancy meets you by the curtains with extra bobby pins that you requested. You assume Chrissy spilled all the beans, judging by the words Nancy whispers in your ears before you head out,
“Give that man hell.”
(he sounds so much like jamie)
HELLFIRE: hell·fire
/ˈhelˌfī(ə)r/(noun): The torment and punishment of hell, envisaged as eternal fire.
"Alright, Shy Girl!" you hear Argyle shout from the pit of VECNA'S LAIR. "Henry is ready when you are."
You give the DJ a nod to start the song. Let the show begin.
“YOU put a spell on ME, I’m losing my mind”
You start your set at the pole, walking a slow circle around it before beginning your dance. Though a dance for Henry only, a crowd outside your immediate circle starts to gather around. Henry is sitting on Vecna's throne, watching inquisitively while you do your introduction. And Eddie follows suit, floating around like a lost puppy.
“You better stop these things. It’s a matter of TIME🕰️”
*DING* a grandfather clock chimes, a sound mixed in by the DJ as he makes the set his own.
The crowd cheers as you strut your sexy self down the stage, smirking to yourself as Henry timidly grips the armrests of Vecna's throne.
Your gaze pans to Eddie. You watch as guests attempt to have a conversation with him in the lair, but he is just not tuned into what they're saying.
Eddie is hypnotized by you, spellbound by a curse that he got himself tangled up in. Oh, how pitiful. To dig his own grave...
“Before I hunt you down..."
Poor Eddie. He has already lost.
"...grab your chin...and kiss your lips…”
You stroke Henry's face as you walk past him, stopping behind him close enough to see the goosebumps and baby hairs rising at the nape of his neck.
You tug on the corner of the blindfold and the knot undoes itself. Henry beams up at you with his eager ocean eyes as you hold the blindfold in your hands. You bend down behind him, exploring his chest with your delicate hands, before tying the blindfold snugly around his eyes.
You check in with your friend. “Are you doing okay?”
“I’m doing just fine,” Henry answers. “Thank you, Shy Girl.”
“Of course.”
“And you bring me back, I lay you down and grab your hips”
Eddie’s claimed a seat now, somewhere towards the back. Though it's harder to see him now, you just know he’s eyeing your technique intently, watching as you slither back to the front of Henry, stroking the bouncer’s face before lowering yourself onto his lap.
Henry’s breath trembles upon realization. He leans back and spreads himself across the chair so you can take up all the space that you needed to make him feel good.
He sucks in a breath.
“Breathe out, Henry…” you encourage him. “Steady breaths… there you go. Relax those shoulders now.”
Henry exhales, sinking his shoulders into flaccidity as he allows you to navigate his lap.
Eddie’s tapping his feet profusely, likely as an attempt to self-regulate. His folded palms rest below his chin as he studies you, attempting to construe whether or not this is something you are genuinely enjoying.
“And we lose all control. And before you know…”
And Eddie should know, that indeed, you are enjoying yourself… and Henry very much.
Henry's hands explore your ass now, and you use this position as leverage to grind yourself against him, your hips rotating to the shape of your stage name spelled out in cursive.
Shy Girl
A soft whimper escapes Henry’s lips as you grind, your ego inflating as he tosses his head back in pleasure.
“What’s the matter, baby boy?” you ask him. “Too much for you already?”
“No,” Henry smiles, seemingly up for a challenge. “I just wanna see your pretty face so bad.”
“Do you now?” you quip.
“Yes I do,” he nods. “Pretty please.”
“Well since you’re being so polite…”
“I put a spell on you, now you’re mine. I’ve got a hold on you, at least for the night.”
Your fingers return to the back of Henry’s neck to rid him of the blindfold you menacingly decided to tease him with. When it collapses, you meet Henry’s starstruck eyes, making sure they process you grinding your hips, exploring his chest, his shoulders, the sensitive parts of his earlobes.
“Fuuuck,” Henry whines. “How are you so good at this?”
“How are you such a good client?” you counter. “So well-behaved for me, Henry.”
Steve and Argyle make their way to either sides of him, showering you with dollar bills because Henry’s hands were occupied. They were exploring your thighs, hovering over your ass, rubbing your back while his mouth praises your every action, your every attribute, your everything.
“Goddd DAMN!” Argyle roars, incentivizing you further.
“What’d I tell you, Creel?” Steve smirks. “Ain’t she something?”
“Fuck yeah, she is,” Henry’s voice is but a barely audible gasp now. “And to think we’ve just scratched the surface.”
He tugs at your cloak pleadingly. You giggle at him, admiring his pretty puppy dog eyes that he’s put on for you.
“You know I can’t help myself when you ask tenderly if I’d dim the lights as your hand brushes me.”
Eddie glares sharply as he watches Henry continue to tug at the strings of your cloak, practically begging you to start stripping for him.
His misery is waiting behind that very garment.
“Wanna show me what’s underneath?” Henry incites.
The lights of VECNA’S LAIR begin to flicker and the classic yellow spotlight quickly changes to red. That’s your cue.
“Thought you’d never ask,” you giggle.
“And the floor swallows your clothes”
You undo the knot of your cloak that tied everything together. Slowly, to the beat of the song, the cloak slips off of you, revealing the beautiful red set.
“Oooh”s, “ahhh”s, and “wooo”s fill the air as the cloak sinks to the floor.
“And your silhouette puts on a show”
From the corner of your eye, you notice Eddie sit right up.
You try to figure out if he recognizes your set or not. But judging by his flustered face, and envious gaze, he sure does. There’s a pain in his eyes as his brows form a sullen arch. You watch as Eddie’s nostrils flare as he jams his fingers into his thighs, digging the balls of his feet into the floor in rout. He can hardly keep himself contained, he’s so angry.
And like a bull at a rodeo, Eddie sees red.
Meanwhile, Henry falls deeper into his state of arousal.
“Wow…” your patron beams. “That’s such a beautiful set, Shy Girl.”
You blush. “You think so?”
“I know so,” Henry insists. “It fits you perfectly. You did a good job.”
“Yeah,” you chime. Then your gaze travels to Eddie who is trying his hardest to conceal his jealousy. “I did do great, didn’t I?”
You allow Henry’s hands to explore all the set’s finest little details, from the little gems to the intricate seams. Henry traces your figure by following the pattern of the set, humming in pleasure to himself at the sight of you.
"That set is gorgeous, baby," Steve coos as he admires you from head to toe. "Did you pick that out yourself?"
“I can’t remember,” you turn to Steve as he rubs your shoulders. “It’s been collecting dust in my closet for a while so I figured I’d wear it today.”
“That was a good choice,” Steve’s voice deepens. “This is my favorite set on you so far.”
"Mm!" an unexpected moan escapes your mouth.
A crinkle in Henry’s pants from his thigh region rides up a nerve ending along your clit. Your mind short circuits from the sheer pleasure of it all.
Soon you forget about the lap dance and start subtly immersing yourself with friction, rubbing harder and harder against Henry’s tense quads as he lets you.
Aside from you, only Henry seems to know what’s going on.
He smirks, the most sinister grin you’ve never seen come from him before. “Find what you’re looking for?”
You nod rapidly, encouraging him to stay in place while you continue to pleasure yourself. He laughs to himself, watching you chase your high on top of him, knowing he's the one who has the reigns now.
“That’s right,” he fawns. “Take what you need from me, baby.”
"Yes Master," you say to him, knowing it's a kink of his. You feel him harden underneath you when he hears those words come out of your mouth.
Curious on whether or not he's still watching, you can’t help but get a glimpse of Eddie. And past the layers of all the strobe lights of VECNA’S LAIR, you meet his eyes.
“You put a spell on me. I’m LOSING my mind”
They’re twinkling. But not in the way you’d want. Soon Eddie's hand aggressively swoops across his eye, as he quickly wipes — what looks like — a teardrop away.
You continue to watch him as he excuses himself from the crowd, pulling his entire weight with him as he drags his feet towards his office.
It's enough to make your cold heart melt. When you see the way his shoulders sulk and how slow he seems to be walking in the busy atmosphere of Hellfire Gentlemen's Club, it dawns on you that you may have taken it too far.
Henry sees your eyes wandering, dwelling on Eddie as they become rather glazed themselves. He directs your focus back to him with his fingers at your chin.
“Why do you cry for him, Shy Girl?” Henry observes. It’s like he can read your mind. “After everything he’s done to you?"
You swallow hard as you struggle to find the words.
"...You give me fever, and drive me insane"
Fuck Eddie. Fuck Eddie. Fuck Eddie.
You've been hurt countless times but you still love with your heart on your sleeve. Why couldn't Eddie do the same?
Sure, his father was abusive and absent. Yours was too. Sure he found his mom dead at the hands of his father and drugs. That was also your childhood experience. Sure he had to grow up rather early just like you did, putting all his needs last while taking care of other family members because no one else would step up. And sure, the only woman he loved enough to marry framed him for a crime he didn't commit, with the idea of inheriting his assets on her mind. You've felt that used before too.
So what if all the people he's ever cared about stabbed him not only in the back, but in the front as well?
...just like you're doing right now.
It really dawns on you this time. You're not any better.
Fuck, you're an asshole. The answer is so clear to you now, you don't understand how you could have been so selfish before. You're both different sides of the same coin, it seems.
"Hm?” Henry tuts when you don't respond. "You think you need Eddie, but you don't. No, no... you don't."
Henry then starts to buck his own hips upwards, grinding along with you.
You feel guilty that Henry feels so good, taunting your clit mercilessly with just the fabric of his dark jeans alone. To distract yourself from all guilt crashing down on you, you start to envision that it's not Henry, but Eddie whose underneath you.
You miss Eddie. You really, really do. You miss his laugh, his random outbursts of energy. You miss how he instantly drew in a crowd no matter where he went. His presence was electricity, sending shockwaves down your body with the slightest skin-to-skin touch. You missed how his fingers felt pulsing in and out of you, curving themselves as he looks you dead in the eye because your pleasure was his utmost concern. You miss his periodic check-ins, how he wouldn't relax until you made it clear that you were okay. You miss how dirty and magical he made you feel, but ultimately how sexy and loved were and felt in his presence, even on the rocky days.
Fuck, Eddie.
"You keep me going in circles with potions and bottles... And I can't escape... I can't escape..."
Fuck, you fantasize. Eddie. Fuck, Eddie.
"I'm lost in your ways... I can't escape, baby."
There's a part in the song that gives you an 'out' from your routine. You wrap up your dance there, completing it with a tender kiss to Henry's cheek as he smiles up at you. The crowd goes wild, and Steve and Argyle continue to spoil you with ones, fives, and tens, enticed by how sultry you made everything look and feel with such little effort.
"Thank you, darling," Henry coos as he rubs your back one final time.
"Any time," you say to him. "I hope I helped alleviate some of your stress."
The boys help you collect your bills while people from all around swarm you with compliments. Eventually, Maxine and Chrissy make their way over to you, ambushing you with hugs and fangirling over your entire performance.
"You did amazing, sis!" Max squeals as she jumps up and down. "You should've seen the look on Eddie's face. Oh you so won!"
"Yeah..." you mumble absentmindedly as you search the club for Eddie. "Yay me..."
--------
It's the last call now before closing and you're helping everyone shut down their stations. You'd typically be back in the dressing room counting your bills by now, but the inner server in you can't help but stay behind.
"Hey!" Argyle speaks up. "Since all of us are off tonight, anyone wanna go barhopping?"
"I'm down!" Steve agrees. "Night's still young and that was the plan last time we were all together, yeah?"
"Shy Girl, you wanna come with?" Jonathan asks.
"Uh, I gotta count my tips and then get to bed," you say, turning the offer down. "I can close the register if you want, Jon so you can catch up with everybody."
"Oh really? Thanks!"
The group invites Max too, promising they would take good care of your little sister. Chrissy offers to be her DD, since she knows that Max drinks. All of you did, when you were her age.
"Please, sis?" Max begs. "All my discussion posts are done and I wanna turn up before midterms."
"Fine," you mutter, rolling your eyes. "But remember, if it smells weird or stinky..."
"Do not drinky..." Max rolls her eyes as she reaches to grab Chrissy by the hand. "Done deal. Thanks again!"
And soon the group vacates the area, leaving only you behind to shut the place down for the night.
When you're done closing out the register, you gather all your things to start packing up. Suddenly, you hear the locks to a distant door jingle and the doorknob turn slightly to doublecheck.
Eddie's still here.
You hear him start to make his way towards POTIONS, his worn out converse making quiet taps against the stone floor.
The natural light from the windows near the ceiling illuminates into the dark space, revealing Eddie's face and the pained expression that still rests upon it. His eyes are puffy, his demeanor hard to read.
You clear his throat at him.
"I thought you left."
"Nah," he shakes his head. "I like to stay behind for a bit sometimes. Make sure I got everything I need."
"I see..." is all you say.
"Told you that set would bring in a lot of tips."
"There you go again, being right about things," you say in a forfeiting tone.
"I'm not always right."
You can't look at him right now. Not when you've caused him so much distress and he's still choosing to speak to you. You gather your belongings and hold your head down in shame, excusing yourself from the narrative and Eddie's presence indefinitely.
"Whatever you say, Eds," you try to smile. "Goodnight."
Nervous now, you put your cloak back on and make your way out of the bar. You nod to Eddie goodnight and start towards your dressing room to prepare for your drive home.
However, it stuns you again as Eddie turns his heels and follows suit...trailing ever so closely behind you... to the dressing room as well.

El's protectiveness and friendships in the lab
wanted to take a minute to appreciate that El's protectiveness isn't a character trait that only emerges post-lab. she's always been that way [assuming, for this post, that NINA stuff more or less happened]; it just couldn't always present in a way that looks badass on a poster.
El and Eighteen
only crumbs here, but if I have to point out a lab kid that El is friendlier with than the others, it's Eighteen.
El holding Eighteen's hand is the only affectionate act I've ever noticed between any of the lab kids, and offering that comfort to her littlest sister is probably as "protective" as El can afford to be (esp as an eight year old with the least power and social standing of anyone).
when the kids in general laugh at El for failing at the light game, Eighteen is not one of the kids shown doing so.
Eighteen is the first dead child El is shown to be upset about. it's not that she looks more distressed about her than the others, but it's odd that she saw Ten dead on the floor next to Brenner a second before this and didn't really react. (maybe she couldn't tell Ten was dead from the doorway? idk)
maybe an El/Eighteen friendship is cornplating or whatever the youths are calling it, but bearing in mind that we're never actually told that El/Eight had some super close friendship, maybe theirs looked something like this.
side note - are friendships even permitted in the lab?
letting the kids form friendships could be dangerous, as Brenner, couldn't it? risks them forming alliances against you? this is why I was asking the other day if socializing seems discouraged in the RR. like, even the bullies, who were "friends," never chatted openly in there unless the cameras were off. maybe any lab friendships have to be hush hush by nature.
anyway idk there's just something about us going "🤯 same numbers!!!" upon seeing the 001 / 011 tattoos, and then 008 + 018 being the only other kids El is hinted at being friendly with... why are we reusing the same pattern? 001 / 008 / 011 / 018 just happen to be every combination of those three numbers within the number of available children.
especially with El "being 8" (as in, years old) at this time. it's giving Henry, 12 / mother of 5. idk where I'm going with that but I'm squinting. Eighteen, you're not some bizarro Little Eight who has an inverted friendship with Big El, right?
El lashing out in the lab
we're shown repeatedly that El hates seeing people get hurt, but multiple times onscreen (and you know innumerable times off) she witnesses severe abuse to her siblings, and we never see her act in their defense like post-lab El would. of course, that's because she realistically can't. we know trying to help anyone in the lab accomplishes little except getting both people in trouble. but I was thinking about how we DO see El lash out for her own sake in 1983. so what's the takeaway? El cares more about protecting herself than others? nah. let's look at the other guard killing scene (again. assuming this really happened):
when similarly cornered in 1979, El's immediate response is silent surrender.
why is her behavior so different? because she's weak? too scared / well controlled? too nice to kill? all those factors have already been established as non-issues in this moment. (she does have her powers here; the circle game proved that Brenner can't control El and knows it; killing when cornered is canonically within her nature)
you might think having a staff member on her side would make her more defiant, but instead she's more compliant here than in '83 (either time. even in the non-guard-killing flashback, El screams and struggles the whole way.)
El and One
he's the difference. she doesn't know he's her brother or has powers yet, but he has presented himself as a fellow prisoner rather than someone in a position of authority. she's also already seen him get punished because of her.
as far as El knows right here, if she lashes out - whether she then escapes successfully or not - she'd be bringing SEVERE punishment onto a nice guy who can't defend himself or escape.
she has a chance at freedom, the power to kill, and the escape route all planned out, but she doesn't do it. the thing that's not in her nature is abandoning a friend to God-knows-what punishment on her behalf.
so while One killing the guards is an act of protection to El, it's also a massive act of protection to One that El is ready to throw out the whole plan right here. don't miss it just because it's not the classic El-screamy-hand thing.
she's sacrificing her chance at freedom in hopes of slightly mitigating his punishment. (they're both doomed to very bad punishment upon capture right here, but if she escapes I think he'd get punished even worse. so she's choosing to share in pretty bad punishment over him being punished extremely severely and her not at all.)
even aside from punishment, she knows she'll be returning to an even worse home life than the one she believed necessitated her immediate escape (Brenner apparently arranging for her to be killed).
so here, can she afford to act out not only because she's acting alone, but because she's an only child, so to speak? there's no one else who could potentially suffer as a result of her actions. no other siblings to use as leverage. no one to protect.
whatever consequences Brenner carried El off to after killing those orderlies, she bore it alone.
I can sorta read this as protective of the other kids in general - not that she did it, but that she didn't until now.
am I saying Brenner might have randomly punished other kids as a result of something El did?
have you met the guy? definitely would've threatened it, might've actually done it. manipulation by whatever means necessary.
when you work in a building full of superpowered people who hate you, you gotta control them psychologically, because physical control isn't something you can maintain for long. it's imperative that they're more afraid of the consequences of kicking your ass than they are of whatever torture you're putting them through. emotional manipulation using friends and innocents as pawns is a classic move. (another reason the kids might want to keep lab friendships secret even if they're allowed.)
that's not theory - we've seen Brenner use this tactic onscreen, telling El that he'll have Owens killed if she tries to get to him. he knows he can't physically control her, so he exerts psychological control by placing Owens' blood on El's hands to get her to cooperate.
the phrase "blood on one's hands" means being responsible for deaths, not having literally, personally committed murder. this imagery is used onscreen to denote El's sense of guilt about the massacre well before she comes to the conclusion that she actually did it. (this could be symbolism that El's mind organically dreamed up instead of engineered fuckery, but who knows. we have no textual explanation yet for how her hands would be that bloody).
and together with Brenner very textually using the kids against each other in other ways - having them literally duel each other in the circle game, but also the "driving them to do exactly what he wants" stuff - I don't think it's unreasonable to figure that fear of harm to the other kids was a manipulation tactic used in the lab.
that definitely includes One - lines like "I'm not going with you / if he finds me he will find you" "I wanted to help you, but I only made things worse" smack of a guy kept in line by fear of something happening to the kids.
and the Brenner-orchestrating-El's-murder story smells like a psyop. is this just Brenner wanting One to think harm would come to El as a consequence of his actions? (she became "uncontrollable" as a result of his coaching). El is too valuable an asset to actually kill. who would know better than One that the treatment for being uncontrollable is soteria, not death? assuming One is being truthful, why would he not see through that. idek what I think is going on here anymore
anyway. MKUltra is ALL about manipulation but I'll talk more about that in my other post
times El protects her friends the same way she protected One
practically every move El makes is about protecting her friends but I want to point out a few times that are specifically reminiscent of her protection of One, where she's ready to give up her freedom to protect her friends even at risk of the worst case scenario (going back to the lab):
sacrificing herself to protect the party from the demogorgon ("no more") <- is that line in reference to the 6 people the demogorgon has snatched, or is that a massacre reference given how incredibly parallel these scenes are. I'm not sure whether "goodbye Mike" meant she thought she'd die or just get so wiped out that she'd be easily recaptured by the lab
leaving Kali and "freedom" to return to Hawkins and protect her friends, where she volunteers to go back into the lab to close the gate
leaving Cali and "freedom" to return to the lab to get her powers back to protect her friends
final thought: I just had a chuckle with myself at the fact that iirc it's Mike and Nancy whose lives El has individually, directly saved the most times.
[honorable mention for Max because I don't know how to quantify 4x9. is that like one massive save?]
like, Mike, okay, but why the Nancy emphasis when she and El have basically zero onscreen relationship. (actually I have a lot to say about El and Nancy coming up soon that might add context)
idk.. lab sibling guilt smth smth El protecting Nancy "she'll be like your new sister" and Mike "will you be like my brother" Creeler. you gotta love it
#another chunk off the analysis. I promise it's coming#givehimthemedicineanalysis#putting 'El saves Holly Wheeler's life' on my s5 bingo card

The Stardust Spider or The Scarlet Spider?
So, I’ve seen some talk about this, and wanted to add my two cents.
When James and I saw the play, it was 100% “The Stardust Spider”:
And “stardust,” is a reference to The Stardust Casino, and the idea of Henry performing at The Stardust Casino with Patty- hence why his stage name/superhero name would be “The Stardust Spider,”- they’ve combined Henry’s “superhero name,” and “stage name,” into one name (“The Stardust Spider,”) and they do the same thing with Patty in this scene, just in a slightly different way.
Henry’s “superhero name,” and “stage name,” get combined via “The Stardust Spider”, being the name for both.
Whereas with Patty, her “superhero name,” (“Mystery Meat”) and her “stage name,” (Miss Mystery, which is what Henry calls her when he introduces her on stage during the church vision scene) get literally combined into one name during that scene, because Henry calls her “Miss Mystery Meat,” which is a combination of “Miss Mystery,” and “Mystery Meat”:
And the name “The Stardust Spider,” is also a reference to Stardust the Super Wizard, a comic book hero who first appeared in 1939 and has a ton of interesting parallels re: ST and TFS (trying to keep this post brief, hence why I’m not going through all those parallels rn/I have another draft about that).
Hell, Stardust the Super Wizard even has the same blonde, slicked-back hair as Henry:
So, yeah! While I won’t be surprised if they’re changing things up between various versions of the show, when James and saw it in December of 2023, it was absolutely “The Stardust Spider”- and we saw it multiple times in December, and it was “The Stardust Spider,” every time.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that with this new West End cast, they’ve changed some other things too (such as Patty’s costume choices), so, these sort of changes aren’t unprecedented and both versions can (and do) coexist, and that the new choices don’t erase the choices that they previously made.
(Especially keeping in mind the ways in which Kate & the Duffers like to change things within ST itself, such as NINA Henry’s weird constantly changing hair and demeanour and changing jumpsuit blood and the constantly moving and changing dead bodies that we see during the massacre, and what others such as James, Stav, Wilbur and myself have been talking about re: them making similar weird intentional changes during TFS.)
And especially considering the changes when it comes to Louis Healy’s version of Henry- like, isn’t it a little suspicious that not only did they change his superhero name to “The Scarlet Spider,” but he also just looks so different (and is styled so different) compared not only to Louis’ version of Henry, but also to in-show Henry?
Like, they could’ve dyed his hair or given him a wig or casted someone else, but instead, they just kept that really dark brown hair for him? Isn’t that a little odd? Especially considering 7 year old Henry’s dark brown hair vs Louis McCartney TFS Henry’s blonde hair and in-show Raphael Luce Young Henry’s blonde hair and in-show Jamie Campbell Bower’s blonde hair?
Especially considering how the previous TFS Victor Creel (Mike Jibson) has blonde hair vs the new TFS Victor (and in-show Victor) having dark brown hair?
(And keeping in mind, too, that Fringe is a confirmed source of inspiration for ST- and in Fringe, Olivia’s alternate timeline counterpart has a different hair colour than her/the main Olivia has blonde hair, whereas the alternate timeline Olivia has brownish-red hair)
TLDR: As usual, there’s more to the story with this sort of stuff.
#stranger things#the first shadow#henry creel#and stardust the super wizard vs brenner sr’s wizard stuff but that’s a whole other Thing

Alright, it's Doctor Who time again! Today we're going to talk about the season 1 finale episodes:
"Bad Wolf" and "The Parting of the Ways."
"Bad Wolf" opens with the Doctor, Rose, and Jack Harkness waking up in strange locations with no memory of how they got there. Their amnesia and general confusion is blamed on a "transmat beam," saying it "does your head in" (something something Henry hitting his head in a cave and it giving him some sort of memory issues prior to the events of TFS, something something Victor acting strangely per the in-show newspapers after the Creel murders).
There's other people there, and they learn they've landed themselves on exaggerated versions of reality game shows: the Doctor on Big Brother, Rose on The Weakest Link, and Jack on What Not to Wear.
As the Doctor speaks to one of the other Big Brother contestants, Lynda, he remembers how he got there: They were all on the Tardis, when suddenly a bright light enveloped them, and then he woke up in the Big Brother house (why is it giving Will getting yoinked out of the shed). However, a transmat beam shouldn't have been able to breach the Tardis, and so he deduces that "this isn't just a game" and something else is going on/he was brought there for a reason.
It's all just slightly NINA, isn't it? Trapped in a "game" with actual stakes? Having some mysterious purpose greater than you can imagine? Talking to the "camera"? Anyway.
As Rose plays The Weakest Link, we see two employees who monitor the games talk amongst themselves about how she showed up out of nowhere and "it's like the game's running itself." Both Rose and the Doctor learn that these games are deadly when another player gets voted out of their respective games, but rather than simply exit stage right, they get disintegrated. It's "play or die."
The employees, still confused by the appearance of their new contestants, try to search for answers.
And the Controller is... well...
The resemblance is weird, right? But we'll talk about all her later, lest I spoil everything right off the bat.
The Doctor starts asking more questions, specifically if being in the games is worth it if it means people are going to die in order for someone to win. Lynda explains to him that:
Everyone say thank you @aemiron-main for the tfs screenshots.
For Lynda, she was chosen at random. For the Doctor, however, it's a different story, and it feels mighty suspicious that almost the exact same line used here is used toward Henry in TFS. Further evidence that Henry really was just trapped in a silly, terrible play game.
Rose is starting to become suspicious as well, specifically when one of the other contestants mentions the Bad Wolf Corporation, who's in charge of the games.
The words "Bad Wolf" have followed Rose and the Doctor throughout the entire first season, showing up in various episodes as a warning from other characters, as location names, or even simply as graffiti in the background of shots. They almost always take note of it, but the Doctor continuously brushes it off as a coincidence because it has yet to actually mean anything.
The Doctor, intent on getting out, opts for trying to get himself evicted. He succeeds, but, as the countdown in the disintegration chamber hits zero, nothing happens. He's proven himself correct: someone wants him there, so the game won't kill him.
He manages to break out the other side of the chamber, and is surprised to see it's somewhere he's been before: a space station called Satellite Five.
Satellite Five was introduced in an earlier episode this season, "The Long Game." In that episode, they visit in the year 200,000, smack in the middle of the Fourth Great and Bountiful Human Empire. However, the Empire doesn't exist as it should, and the Doctor learns that the station, which broadcasts the news, has been deliberately lying to people in order to stunt the progression of the human race for the last near-century.
And I'm not going to get too deep into that episode here, but I'll just say...
It certainly contains some... interesting details. People who are able to "see" everything in existence, false narratives used to hide identities, people "not existing" for various reasons, dead people being puppetted by the chips embedded in their heads... anyway.
The Doctor destroys the people responsible and, supposedly, puts everything back to how it should be for them to begin advancing again. As he's seeing now, that didn't quite go as anticipated.
Lynda says it hasn't been called Satellite Five in a hundred years, and it's now called the Game Station.
This instantly makes me think of Brenner, and specifically something James talks about in his big analysis of TFS. He discusses how characters, like Brenner and especially Patty, attempt being helpful, or do things with the intention of being helpful, only to actually cause harm. Here, the Doctor attempted to set things right, and fully believed he had, but, in reality, he'd plunged the human race into a worse despair than it already was, unintentionally assisting in a greater plan he had no idea was unfolding in the background. Hell, it even makes me think about Henry unknowingly giving in to the Mind Flayer in TFS and in the VR game. Similarly, James also discusses the strange ties between Will and Brenner, and the wild yet not entirely unrealistic possibility that Will became Brenner via time travel in an attempt to "fix" things before they happened, only to become the one perpetuating it.
Meanwhile, the Corp.'s employees are still trying to figure out what's going on, and one of them speaks to the Controller.
I personally would kill to have "they are no one" be a line said to dissuade the MF from immediately going after the folks who go into the UD throughout the series, namely in ST4. Or even in relation to NINA? Staring at the way El was put into that closet by some weird version of One we don't see anywhere else, "outside of the game," and the fact that some rooms in NINA don't line up with the blueprints of the lab.
"They are no one" is a line that, you'll remember, is also said in that earlier episode I mentioned. There, Rose and the Doctor, not natively part of that future society, have no record of their existence when the antagonists try to find out who they are. "They are no one." They don't exist, just as they "don't exist" here in the games. Something something, "One doesn't exist."
The other employee tries to enter Archive Six, where transmat logs are housed, in an attempt to find out how these mystery contestants got on board, but the Controller refuses her access. It's becoming clear that the Controller knows something that we don't.
The Doctor and Jack reconvene, having both gotten out of their respective shows, while the Doctor tries to tap into the station's hardware to find Rose.
"NINA should be a basic memory machine, but the systems are twice as complicated. It's more than just a VHS player. It contains something else."
They track Rose down and rush to save her before she loses The Weakest Link. They burst into the studio and Rose runs to meet them, but gets disintegrated. The commotion gets guards called in, who arrest the Doctor, Jack, and Lynda. But they manage to surprise the guards and break free of their holding cell and gain access to Floor 500, the topmost level of the station where the control room is located.
There, they come face to face with the Controller. The Doctor tries to speak to her, but she can't respond.
That in and of itself sure has a kick to it... can't wait to learn more about NINA and where Henry's currently at. Especially when the station employee tells the Doctor that unauthorized transmats, etc., have been going on for years. She's been trying to do something to help for a long time.
The Doctor continues to try and figure out what's going on, searching through the computers for any type of information, while the gaggle of employees stuck with them in the control room ask if they can be let out rather than be kept as "hostages."
Can't believe they even had the Ray Carroll special in here.
At various points through the episode thus far, we've heard warnings of impending solar flares, which will disrupt transmissions and put things offline for a brief period. This finally occurs, and suddenly the Controller begins asking for the Doctor by name.
She explains that, with everything offline, her "Masters" won't be able to hear her. When the Doctor asks who her Masters are, she says that the name is "forbidden" and they wired her brain to control her thoughts. She managed to get the Doctor onto the station relatively unnoticed because her Masters don't watch the game shows, they only monitor the transmissions, so they wouldn't have noticed him.
Like... "Hiding [...] in the darkness"?
The solar flares dissipate, transmissions come back online, and she's barred again from speaking.
Meanwhile, Jack works out that the disintegration beam actually isn't a disintegrator and is in fact a secondary transmat system, meaning Rose is alive, they just have to find out where. Despite being heard by her Masters, the Controller gives them the coordinates to where Rose was transported. The Controller is then transported away, where she's ultimately killed by her off-screen Masters.
The Doctor tells the others that "Someone's been playing a long game," and whoever it is has been controlling the human race in secret for many generations now (including in that earlier episode). They realize there's a shielding signal at the coordinates the Controller gave them, hiding something, and when they cancel the signal, it reveals a fleet of hundreds of space ships - Dalek space ships (which should be impossible, seeing as they were all allegedly destroyed).
The Daleks address the Doctor, ordering him to not interfere with their stratagem or else they'll "exterminate" Rose. The Doctor's response?
He's having his El moment.
He says that he's going to rescue Rose despite his lack of plans or defenses, because he knows that attitude scares the Daleks.
The second episode, "The Parting of the Ways," opens on the Tardis landing on board the main ship of the fleet, materializing on top of Rose so she's safe inside. They eventually face the Daleks, and the Doctor taunts them as he's kept safe behind their force field, commenting that despite all emotion allegedly being bred out of the Daleks, he's sure that, deep down, they still feel fear when he shows up.
One Dalek, the Emperor, speaks up, informing him that only its ship survived, "falling through time, crippled, but alive." That one ship of Daleks worked in secret, infiltrating Earth and harvesting "dispossessed" humans for their DNA in order to create more Daleks. How very Flesh Flayer and Vecna of them.
The Dalek Emperor claims that it only harvested "one cell in a billion" that was worthy of being nurtured into a fully-fledged Dalek, but the longer they talk, the more it becomes clear that the Daleks have been tainted by the humanity they grew from. When Rose comments that they're "half human," the Emperor and surrounding Daleks protest, calling it "blasphemy" to make such an accusation.
When Vecna (rather, the MF) gets "taken down" from the inside? Having "consumed" those victims who probably "tainted" him with their humanity and their will to live? When they force him to accept he's been bending the truth to get what he wants? What then?
The Doctor & Co. retreat back to Satellite Five while the Daleks begin advancing toward Earth, the Emperor all the while speaking about how they'll "purify" the Earth and make it their "paradise." So anyway, how about I plug James's ST and religion posts again. I'm curious to see how much more we'll get when ST5 comes around, as various leaks have already given us a lot.
The Doctor decides that the best course of action is to retool the satellite station to transmit a Delta Wave, which will fry the brains of any creature in its path (read: the Daleks). However, they're not confident they'll have time to complete it, so Rose tries thinking of ways around it.
Anyway, remember that part I said earlier about James's theory about Will going back in time to try and fix things...
Suddenly, however, the Doctor leaps up, praising Rose's idea, claiming that, if he did go back and cross his own timeline, it would create enough energy to give them the boost they need to make the Delta Wave.
He rushes Rose into the Tardis and tells her to hold something down on the control panel. He exits, but rather than continue working, he remotely sends the Tardis away with Rose inside.
An El line and a Brenner line? Both from within NINA, no less? Sandra Bullock Well dot jpeg
A hologram of the Doctor appears to Rose inside the Tardis, saying it's activated "Emergency Programme One," which is sending Rose back home because the Doctor is in mortal danger, which he doesn't want her caught up in. El moment being locked in that closet and told to stay there where she's safe.
In short, there's no way for him to control which organisms the Delta Wave kills. It would kill everyone in the general vicinity, including himself and Rose and everyone on Earth. The Dalek Emperor mocks the Doctor for making the decision to kill humans and Daleks together.
The Doctor justifies the decision with the fact that, at this point in time, there's human colonies all over the universe, but these Daleks are the only Daleks in existence. Therefore, it's a necessary sacrifice if it means being able to kill all the Daleks once and for all. It's a "better" decision to kill them as humans rather than let them live, wherein they'd be forced to become Daleks. Something something, One killing the lab kids because it was better than living their whole lives trapped there.
The Doctor then asks the Dalek Emperor about the "Bad Wolf" that's been following them through their travels, but the Dalek claims that "They are not part of my design." Mysterious! There's yet another player hiding behind the scenes!
Back in the... past... present? Rose is sitting in a diner with her mom (Jackie) and her sort-of boyfriend (Mickey) telling them about what's going on.
Which just makes me think of the possibility of weird time-related stuff like this happening in ST5. We already see young Henry allegedly turning back time, and there's all the sort of weirdness around NINA possibly affecting the real world and time loops, and TFS Henry talks about how he can "see everything" ... all I'm saying is, it would be fun if there was time overlap like this explicitly in ST.
Here, Rose also has a moment about how upset she is that she can't help the Doctor. That he showed her "a better way of living your life. [...] That you don't just give up. You don't just let things happen. You make a stand. You say no. You have the guts to do what's right when everyone else just runs away!" Okay, girlie, give us the core of ST on a silver platter right here.
It's here that, after storming out of the diner, she notices multiple cases of "Bad Wolf" written in graffiti all around her.
There's something in this, too, that makes me think of all the "warnings" we get throughout ST, like in how the MF will just... give up all its plans through Billy for some unknown reason, and having it framed as a way to scare El, when it could very possibly be someone farther on the inside trying to warn her, so she's prepared, without getting caught.
"Bad Wolf" is a link proving that she can get back to him.
Her plan is to break open the control panel on the Tardis to get to its heart. The Tardis, while a machine, is alive and telepathic, so Rose believes she can communicate with it.
Everyone say thank you James for the TFS and ST1 screenshots bc I was complaining about having to go hunting for them.
But really, Rose wishes to make contact with the Tardis in order to get it to do what she wants, and Brenner is trying to contact Dimension X and the UD in order to...? Anyway.
They finally manage to open it, and the panel gets torn away to show bright, golden light. Rose looks into it, and bright particle-like strands flow from the heart of the Tardis into her eyes. Like, no joke, it looks very similar to the glowing UD particles we see in ST4. Having now communicated with it, the Tardis returns to the Doctor.
Meanwhile, back on the Game Station, the Daleks have begun infiltrating the satellite and corner the last passengers on the very bottom level. One of them, who didn't believe the Doctor & Co. when they said Daleks were coming, shouts, "You can't! You don't exist!" as they advance and exterminate all of them. They sure love making existence a fickle thing.
The Doctor has also managed to finish creating his Delta Wave machine. All he has to do is push the lever, but the Dalek Emperor continues mocking him, saying that they (the Daleks) are immortal.
The Doctor struggles for a moment, hands on the lever, but he can't bring himself to push it. He chooses coward "any day."
Having effectively surrendered, the Doctor accepts that he's going to be killed by the Daleks, saying, "Maybe it's time," but then the Tardis appears. The doors burst open, revealing Rose in a halo of gold light, which glows and twists around her.
The Daleks call her the "Abomination" and attempt to kill her, but, with a lift of her hand, she deflects their laser beam. She says that she is the Bad Wolf, and she scatters the words through time as a message to herself. She was the one who did that.
The Doctor pleads with her to stop, warning her that, with the entire time vortex flowing through her head, she's "gonna burn." But she wants to keep the Doctor safe from the "false god" (the Dalek Emperor). The Dalek Emperor cries that it's immortal and can't be hurt, but Rose says:
She's having her TFS Henry moment fr fr.
She disintegrates all of the Daleks with a wave of her hand. "Everything must come to dust." She kills the Dalek Emperor, and the Doctor pleads with her to stop again, to "just let go," but she says, "How can I let go of this?" Another Brenner moment in here? Yeeeesh.
Just as she brought death to the Daleks, she also says she can "bring life." Prior to this, Jack had been collecting recruits to act as a defense against the Daleks with whatever arms they had. As established in previous episodes, the Daleks are more-or-less immune to most weapons, and thus many of these people were killed, including Jack. Rose, with her newfound power, brings him back to life.
The Doctor shouts at her that she "can't control life and death" and she bluntly says, "But I can." She's starting to hurt, though, and says as much. She can see all of time, what is, was, and could be, and the Doctor says that's what he sees all the time, and "doesn't it drive you mad?" She can't let go of this power herself, though, and the Doctor finally completes the circle of romantic and sexual tension between them with a kiss, absorbing the energy of the time vortex from her. Miss thang got unflayed by "her" Doctor.
Eventually, she wakes up on the floor of the Tardis, now closed back up and being manned by the Doctor as they leave the now-destroyed Dalek fleet behind.
Damn, she's even having a Victor moment?? She's got the whole package.
The Doctor tries to play it cool, but he suddenly has a fit of pain, jerking and doubling over as he winces (okay, TFS Henry). Having absorbed the energy of the time vortex, every cell in his body is dying, but the only way to stop it is to use the Time Lords' method of cheating death: regenerating.
You're gonna change, huh? Just like TFS Henry did? Just like Brenner Sr. did? Surely this means nothing when you bring regeneration into it, too.
The episode ends with Christopher Eccleston turning into David Tennant and they lived happily ever after.
I'll never be good at making these things brief. Sorry. Anyway, onto some more commentary.
First, I want to touch on a brief aside I made at the beginning about how the transmat beam is reminiscent of the light that glows in the shed when Will goes missing. Rose, the Doctor, and Jack all get engulfed in a growing white light before all vanishing from the Tardis, which is a very similar sequence of events to Will entering the shed, being engulfed in the growing light of the light bulb, and then vanishing in an instant.
Now, we have yet to actually see what truly happened in the shed that night. We're meant to infer that the Demogorgon did all that, but based on how we see later Demogorgons behave, it doesn't quite make sense. Em has spoken extensively about the oddities of the Demogorgon in ST1, and James has spoken about the potential for Joyce's near-misses with the Demogorgon having been visions.
We've also discussed (though I don't think there's been an official post made about it yet) the possibility of Will getting grabbed by something/someone other than the Demogorgon, and I don't mean Brenner, either. I mean, as in James's Superspy post I linked earlier, someone like one of the Henwards or even El, in some way shape or form, giving Will an out before he gets grabbed by the Demogorgon. Especially when the growing bright light has only ever been associated with El using her powers in extreme situations (ie. in ST2 when closing the gate, and ST4 in NINA).
In DW, the light was a call for help as the Controller grabbed the only people she knew could help fix the situation they were in. And while it ended up putting the Doctor and his companions into a dangerous situation, it was successful. While somewhat backwards, perhaps the light in the shed is something reminiscent of that. Perhaps it was meant to represent someone helping Will, rather than it being part of the attack from the Demogorgon.
While we're on the topic of Will, I also want to further discuss the scene where the Doctor ultimately bows down from triggering the Delta Wave. He can't bring himself to kill people, at least not anymore, and this is a huge step in his character arc this season. For reference, you can check out my previous post about the episode "Dalek" where he explicitly struggles with this.
There's always been a lot of discussion about what Will's actions will be in ST5. Many people believe that he'll have an active hand in killing Vecna (and others) in order to get revenge for what was done to him/how he was mistreated. And while I don't doubt he'll have the urge, I don't think that will be the end-point of his character arc. It's simply not in his nature.
He's been pushed into a corner, much like how the Doctor was pushed into a corner in "Dalek," but as soon as someone intervenes to get him to see reason, he backs down, and he retains that. I believe that we'll see Will get pushed close to the edge, but never take that final step. Or, at the very least, regret it when he does. Much like how the Doctor deems it better to choose the "cowardly" route and save everyone in the vicinity, I believe Will will ultimately come to understand that violence is not the answer, and killing won't actually solve the problem.
Now onto the similarities between Vecna and the Controller.
I already showed how, visually, they're strikingly similar, with Vecna being strung up by vines which are literally plugged into his back, much like how the Controller is strung up on wires plugged into her body. Paired with blue lighting and freaky shadows? And the Controller even having pale white eyes? Surely it's just a coincidence haha :)
However, I also want to talk about something that James has talked about before. In that post, he discusses how Vecna never seems to use his abilities or speak when he's not plugged into the UD vines, the conclusion being that the physical Vecna we see, meaning the one outside of visions/the mindscape, is just a puppet without any actual control. And, as I explained above, the Controller has an extreme lack of control despite her name. She's presented as the one in control, but she's merely a front to hide the actual perpetrator, and she's being forced to act the way she does.
To make it clear, the bare bones of what I'm positing here is: the Controller is to the Daleks what Vecna is to the Mind Flayer.
I also linked this post above, wherein James discusses the potential of some sort of meddling happening from a "spy" of sorts, most likely one of the Henwards, in an attempt to help our protagonists without getting caught by the Shadow or whoever is holding him hostage. This immediately popped into my mind when the Controller found her method of skirting around the Daleks, first by getting the Doctor into the games, since she knew the Daleks didn't watch the games, and then by taking advantage of the solar flares to speak to the Doctor without getting caught.
Though some information is hidden from her, she has more information on the Dalek side than anyone else (ie. the coordinates where Rose was sent), and thus that's insider information that she can share to assist our protagonists (much like Will's "close gate" moment, which he very likely had no way of knowing on his own without someone else giving him the insider information).
In short, she, like Vecna, is presented as the one who's "in control" of everything, but (like Vecna?) she's revealed to be what's essentially a diversion who's been trapped against her will.
I also wanted to touch on a line I screenshotted above, about how the Controller "hasn't been human for years." We've already been presented with the equation Henry=One=Vecna, and even if I don't subscribe to that equation, it's meant to imply that Vecna was human at some point; he wasn't borne purely of the UD like the other creatures.
While many people leap to demonizing Vecna, the Controller reminds us that we're meant to see the tragedy in it. The Controller was hooked up when she was 5, making it the only life she's ever known. If we follow the equation above and Henry really is Vecna, then he was kidnapped when he was 12, imprisoned in a lab for decades, and then launched into a literal hellscape and trapped with no way of escaping. While he was older when all of this began, it's more or less the only life he's ever known.
Like the Controller, he was forced to adapt and change for the situation he was thrust into. And while the employees joke about the Controller no longer being human, she very much was one.
We can even argue that she was still human. Mostly because, yeah, of course she is, but also because of what we see occur with the Daleks. The Dalek Emperor claimed that, though it made these new Daleks from humans, it took one tiny cell from its human victims and cultivated it into pure Dalek. But then, as detailed above, the Doctor understands that they're still tainted by humanity. There's no escaping it, no matter how much you or anyone else tries to change it.
I've spoken in other posts, mainly this one and this one, about the importance of "humanity" in Doctor Who and why I think it's something that carries over heavily into Stranger Things. As such, I won't get into it too much here, but it's just something I want to point out again based on what we see in these two episodes, especially in regard to humanity also being a detriment. For the Daleks, humanity is a stink that makes them despise themselves. Humanity itself is a weapon, just not in the traditional sense. Which, again, I'm confident is going to carry over into the final season of ST in a big way.
Especially in conjunction with Rose's moment of "making a stand" and wanting to make a difference in the world. Living is about kindness, compassion, and helping others rather than just sitting idly by and letting those who are hurting bear the brunt of it on their own.

I was seeing people on twitter saying how season 3 ruined the shows reputation and I'm curious, why do you think season 3 is the way it is? I think you already talked about it but I can't recall
I have talked about ST3, specifically in how the team has capitalized on its "out of place" vibe. ST3 sets up basically every arc of ST4 while also being a blatant criticism of both the US and the USSR.
Mike complains about things being too expensive and the fact that he can't buy anything on the money he's given—not like he used to. The mall, in tandem, is portrayed as a money-sucking community-crushing behemoth that's putting local folks out of business behind a veneer of trendy fun. Criticism of capitalism on small and large scale, front and center.
Then we have the Russian lab, which exists to show us that the "other side" (often glorified by less-knowledgeable haters of capitalism) is no better. Their lab is doing the same thing HNL did! HNL isn't unique. The Russian lab is kidnapping, drugging, and torturing kids—a preview of NINA and of Sullivans torturing Wallace for information—and they're trying to force open a gate without actually having anyone with abilities—a preview of Vecna and the Shadow cobbling together their own non-Eleven method of opening gates.
The Russian lab arc also serves to set up the Russian prison arc, which takes Joyce and Hopper out of the US entirely just in time to reveal that woah! Vecna is Henry Creel? And he's someone Joyce and Hopper both would have known? Gotta get them entirely out of the picture so nothing goes wrong with Vecna's plan in Hawkins. Can't have anyone questioning whether or not that's actually Henry.
From there, the Russian prison arc also sets up future reveals for ST5, specifically regarding HNL's 1979 massacre, that would have been harder to work with if the entire arc had stayed within the CIA. Putting it in the KGB, the "enemy" of the US, also allowed for paralleling in storytelling about where Hopper ended up vs where Henry ended up and how the situation in Dimension X all went down. It also allowed for some hinting on making assumptions (see: the Jamie-lookalike "Evil Russian" who ends up being a harmless Jazzercise teacher), on people using variations of Henry as a fake name to break someone out of prison (see: Enzo's connections to the NINA arc), AND on people putting on acts to get a desired result (see: Jim putting on an act to antagonize Dmitri to escape the pit with a lighter and booze, as compared to TFS Brenner putting on an act to antagonize Henry into showing him the true extent of the Mindflayer vs Jim putting on an act to scare "Victor" into spilling truth about the attack on Mr. Newby, etc).
None of that ^^ would have been possible without the much-hated ST3 Russian arc. It's called foreshadowing and plot scaffolding, aka "secret tools that will help us later". They're laying breadcrumbs and hoping the viewer is dumb enough to go "UGH evil Russians? Of course 🙄" until ST5 comes around and blow it all out of the water. It's the same as the people who shit on 2.07 as a whole, saying it drags and feels out of place. That may be so, but there's a reason why it's there and a message it's there to deliver (setting up Jane fuckery and laying the bricks for "NINA isn't real/it's influenced by El's prior memories").
Also, has anyone stopped to think that maybe the vibe of ST3 is off because it's the starting point for all the relationships deteriorating? The Party growing up and drifting apart? It feels weird because everything is weird?
And people bitch about not getting fun/"beach" episodes anymore, but then ST gives you a summer fun + horror season and suddenly y'all don't want it?????? ST3 is fun! It's bright and colorful like summer! Idk. Sometimes I think people are just inventing guys to get mad at.

Idk if you noticed this on the show, but when Brenner was explaining what Nina (the play) was about, I couldn't stop thinking that it was a parallel to El and Henry. Because Brenner says; ''Nina was a young woman whose lover was killed in a duel, Nina was so traumatized she buried the memory. It was as if it never happened.'' I mean if we think about it that's exactly what happens to El? 'The duel' in question could be the fight between El and Henry. And then Henry 'dies', the whole thing is so traumatizing for El that she buries the whole memory and forgets them as if it never happened. I just think the choice to include something like this from the writing perspective is really interesting because there are moments like these where El and Henry are paralleled to lovers.
That is so interesting. I didn't even think about that, probably because I had never heard of Nina (the play) before.
Edit from the other person running this blog: I really think they purposefully added all this romantic imagery. And yet people still call us crazy for being Elenry shippers lol.

Time for some theory on the prequel!
What if the exorcism and the massacre happened the same night and this is one of the plot twists of the prequel?
I could be wrong, but I always found it strange that they angered the "demon" but he didn't attack them immediately. The soldiers hurt possessed Will, and a few hours later he sends them to die. And the exorcism happens the same night.
Also, Kate Trefry wrote both The Spy and The First Shadow. She was definitely thinking about the Creels when she wrote that episode
I think it's interesting that in S2 the massacre happens before the exorcism. Maybe this means that Henry was still himself before the exorcism, but then something changed?
Basically, Will was saved by the exorcism, but in 1959 the exorcism made everything worse.
Henry saying: 'She (Virginia) called a doctor, an expert' reminds me so much of The Exorcist.
Virginia calls a doctor, but we don't see him, but then Henry says that he was desperately trying to escape him. Martin Brenner. Maybe Henry is describing the "exorcism". But his and Victor's memories have been manipulated. Victor was found wandering on the side of the Highway, a parallel with one of the stories Terry investigated, so either they messed with their memories, or there's some time trickering going on, as a consequence of the exorcism.
Also, I'm not the only one who noticed that many things look staged. In his monologue Henry says that people perform in a silly play, day after day, some of the Nina shots look so staged that there's even the "curtain" falling and an opera song playing. And the prequel about Henry is literally a play where the characters will also perform in a play. In every season there are mentions of living in a bubble, dreams, fakers, and people ruining the game. So the fact that we saw the night of the massacre doesn't mean that that's what really happened.
In fact, Victor doesn't mention the exorcism, but he talks about the massacre, and when he says that he thought that the demon would take him too, we hear Alice's screams and the Demogorgon. But there isn't any creature in the flashbacks. Unless it's not an actual creature, but another type of monster. Dr Brenner. That would mean that he was there, more evidence that we didn't see what really happened.
Brenner is in the play, so we're finally gonna see what he did. We need some answer before S5!
Then there's the parallel with Hopper. The two cursed fathers in prison. Hopper hears the Demogorgon too, after he tells Enzo that the curse started when he was 18, (in 1959), and he mentions Uncle Sam. So this scene seems to imply that Sam Owens is connected to the curse.
Other parallels between the prequel and 2x06.
Hopper, Joyce, Bob are in 2x06 and in the prequel. Owens is in 2x06, he is connected to the curse, and has parallels with two fathers: Hopper
And Walter Bishop, who also has a son named Peter (Henry's fake name was Peter Ballard) I wrote about other parallels with Fringe here, including Mike's memory of the first time he and Will met. I have so many thoughts on Owens and his role...
Not sure who has Mike's role in the prequel. I thought Scott Clarke made sense, but maybe it's Patty. I don't think Henry is in love with her tho. And maybe that's the point. Patty is falling for Henry, but if he doesn't reciprocate, if he doesn't really trust her, maybe that's why she couldn't help him in the end. Will and Mike, on the other hand, have a deep connection and trust each other completely. And that helped Will to communicate with them.
I know that Mike and Will have been best friends since they were little kids, and Patty and Henry just met. But after a certain monologue people believe that between Mike and El it was love at first sight... So the prequel could show that, no, it doesn't work like that.
Other people have already talked about this shot. Cross, gates. And now we know that Bob was the son of a preacher. Another connection to the exorcism.
Also, if the exorcism and the massacre happened the same night, maybe the word Friend behind Will here is a reference to someone who tried to help Henry in 1959.
I have a crazy theory about Brenner, the exorcism, the demogorgon and why there's so much blood in the lab, but for now I'll just say this: if Brenner is in the shed scene, in Will's mind, when Joyce says that his birthday is on March 22, she would be right, because Matthew Modine was born on March 22, 1959.
If they really did it, they're insane, lmao!

OK.
SO.
i just finished reading rw&rb, and it was amazing, but thats not the point.
the point is-
they called the gang (alex, henry, nora, june, bea and pez) THE SUPER SIX.
and my lil brain goes,
who else is absolutely fucking iconic??
who else is six??
THE CROWSSSSS
so here, have the super six and the crows merged together plus explanations cuz i have nothing better to do :3
Henry: Wylan. ofc. duh. rich boy who doesnt really want it, absolutely very gay and very posh. plus they all got their fair share of anxiety and family trauma ehehe
Alex: Jesper. again, who else could it've been?? theyre literally the same person in different universes ahahah
plus theyre both bi-3 (bilingual, bisexual, biracial- alex's mexican-american and jes is zemeni-kaelish cuz his dad)
Nora: Nina. WHO ELSE COULD IT HAVE BEEN? SERIOUSLY. EVEN THE NAMES. SO THEM. SO THEM. SO THEM.
so those were the obvious ones, these u have to squint a bit more to see them but please, bear with me i promise itll make sense
Bea: Inej. they both have some pretty deep trauma and theyre both absolute badasses so it made sense to me. feel free to disagree its just my opinion
Pez: Kaz. *biiiig deeeep inhale* OK SO. (i do use ok so a lot. sorry) it might look like the least probable thing ever- and i see pez waaaay more as nikolai than as kaz, but were talking crows here so well just have to accept it.
plus, pez is the one always having big ass plans with costumes etc and thats a very kaz thing to do (big complicated plans) and theyre both drama queens (like, look at kaz. he goes around in a BLACK SUIT WITH GLOVES. AND A CANE. A CROW HEADED CANE. u cant tell me its not dramatic.)
June: ....Matthias.
... he was the only one left ok? shes also more of a non-crow character (hanne??) but the sense of duty is a bit in both of them, and the self sacrifice etc.
et voilaaaaaaaaaa
the end :3

Are You Listenin'?
Advent Calendar Day 22 (prompts by @raven-cincaide-words) Today’s prompts: Gift wrapping | Family | Disappointments Fandom: Red, White, & Royal Blue - Pairing: Firstprince .8k[Ao3]
Alex was sitting on the floor, scrolling through his phone, when Henry found him.
He felt Henry’s lips on the back of his neck and smiled leaning back a bit into his hold. “Hey, sweetheart.”
Henry hummed, lowering himself to the floor behind Alex and scooching forward so Alex was sitting directly between his legs. He wrapped his arms around Alex’s middle. “Did you get distracted again, darling?”
Alex looked up, his eyes looking over the floor. Oh, right, he’d been wrapping presents. That’s why he was on the floor.
“Oh, Ugh.” He leaned back against Henry’s chest. “Yeah. I haven’t decided if I’m gonna finish or not.”
“You only have one left.”
“Yeah, and it’s the present for my Auntie Nina, who just texted me and told me she wouldn’t be getting anything for me this year,” Alex told him, rolling his eyes. “So I’m deciding if I even want to give her this bullshit cruelty free coffee I ordered for her. I could keep it. I should keep it! It’s good coffee!”
Henry kissed behind his ear. “We’re making the transition to tea, love.”
“Ugh, right.” Alex scrunched his face. “The company also does tea. We should order tea for ourselves.”
“Sure,” Henry agreed easily. “But tell me about your Aunt first. Why wouldn’t you give her the gift you bought her? Because she’s not getting you a present? That’s rather petty.”
“No, okay, listen,” Alex pulled away a bit, turning his body so he could look at Henry. “This is my godmother. She’s my mom’s first cousin and was there for my baptism and everything. We used to be real fucking close when we lived in Texas but then we got older and moved to DC and she got caught up in her own kids and what ever but as soon as the story broke about me and you she started getting so weird! Like she decided she would start giving me Christmas presents as a godmother even though we never did that before and the gifts were always like ‘Just because we disagree doesn’t mean I don’t love you.’ or like rainbow ally shirts talking about not hating people you love. Like it got weird – me being bi made her relationship with me so weird and she’s been pulling away for a while, even refusing my mom’s invited for family gatherings and stuff like I couldn’t tell you the last time I even saw her. But I’ve gotten her presents back for the last few years and I figured if she wanted to hold this up as a sign that she was still there for me or whatever then, sure! I’ll participate!”
Alex groaned, throwing his hand to gesture at his phone. “But now she’s telling me she can’t get me a gift and it doesn’t make her love me any less but last year she got me socks with quirky phrases on them. Like what does can’t mean? Can’t even drop five bucks on a thrift store mug? Like what the fuck?!?!”
Henry had taken up rubbing his hand comfortingly over Alex’s back as he rampaged. Alex took a deep breath and tilted his head against Henry’s temple.
“She threatened me a few years ago,” Alex told him. “She was having weird problems with her sisters not like her new boyfriend and she took it out on us and when I said something she lunged at me. And she never apologized.”
Henry hummed, dropping his face to lay a kiss on Alex’s shoulder.
Alex took another breath, the exhale coming out on a sigh.
He loved Henry so much. Loved that Henry was letting him work this out. That Henry wasn’t asking questions or trying to convince Alex to be the better person. He’s been good about crazy family stuff since that first Christmas. That first phone call, way back before they were anything. And Alex was so lucky to have him.
It was just disappointing. How relationships could fall apart. How people who made you trust them when you were a child show you how little they prioritize you as an adult.
Relationships change. He had other priorities now, too.
He turned his body again, kicking his leg over Henry’s so he was turned fully in his lap, chest to chest, and dropped his face into Henry’s shoulder.
“I’ll give her the present,” Alex told him, his voice muffled into Henry’s skin. “But I’m gonna do a really shitty job wrapping it.”
Henry hummed again, kissing the shell of Alex’s ear.

7. what character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how how the fandom acts about them?
I would say.... el? now listen, I'm not the biggest fan of her in canon but never actively disliked her, just found her character unrelatable. many of her fans on twitter and reddit have absolute burning hatred for will, calling him slurs and acting like he has stolen something from her and that she needs to be defended. she doesn't, she's the icon of the show and has shooters around every corner. I'll be hearing these people in the back of my head every time she has a scene in s5 unfortunately
second - henry stans on this website. I loved the way jamie played him as 001 in the nina flashbacks where it's hard to tell if he's purely manipulative or actually trying to be kind, but otherwise eh. the stans behaviour on this website really needs no explanation. putting this second because at least it's contained within tumblr.
that being said I desperately beg for more henry and el interactions that aren't just them screaming and fighting. I want depth to their relationship I want that edge of henry possibly wanting real connection with her - so interesting!
22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
anything will x the horrors. will being possessed, will being in the upside down for seasons, will having a trace of the mindflayer still inside him, anything like that I eat up and I wish there was more about it. I want more horror explorations with him. I'd really like to see creative ideas about what happened to him all that time in the upside down with no water and freezing temperatures for five days straight. I want to see more exploratory fic and art pieces.

“I feel it coming, my soul cannot be found. I feel it coming, don’t fucking tie me down.”
♡
Eddie is glued to Nina’s hip during her orientation.
You can hardly watch. You can’t even listen. All Back of the House seems to be talking about is the fact that the cute new girl pulled up to work with Eddie. Apparently she skipped out of the passenger side of his van stoned out of her mind, waltzing in absentmindedly while Eddie opened the door for her.
Nina’s excuse was that she didn't have a ride to work. And while that may be true, your jealousy was projecting itself...hard. The times you were in Eddie’s van sitting right where she was were completely unrelated to work.
But Nina is a pretty girl. Eddie does love doing favors for pretty girls who flatter him.
You still couldn’t figure out why no one will talk about anything else. Like how Henry has evidently been spiraling into a lonely, seasonal depressive episode and could snap any minute. Or how whoever is closing isn’t sweeping the aisle all the way through. Also, one of the lights keeps flickering. Totally throws off the whole vibe of VECNA’S LAIR.
But no, the hot topic of today’s shift is still Nina and Eddie.
It's an awakening for you though. Now you really understand and have accepted that you are no different from everyone else.
Eddie’s jokes? He recycles with everybody.
Food? Makes for everybody.
Smoking and drinking in his van? With everybody.
Calls on Henry to fight off the bad guys? Yes, for everybody…
You are not special.
Speaking of Henry…he’s off task again. Luckily lunches are usually not busy so he can afford to be away from the door.
Henry is at VECNA’S LAIR with you, chatting away with Eddie’s buddy Gareth while you give Gareth a lap dance. And you can tell by the eagerness in Henry’s eyes that he’s anticipating his dance that you agreed to do for him to combat his loneliness.
“You gotta let me know how your dance goes, Creel,” Gareth grins. “Shy Girl is one of the best.”
Gareth is one of your regulars. He went to school with Eddie, played in his band Corroded Coffin when they were younger, and he also tips well. Eddie usually stays and chats with him, but today he is off and aloof, avoiding any type of eye contact with the both of you.
Screw Eddie. He’s seemed to have forgotten about you already now that there’s a new toy for him to play with.
“I love how you move your hips, babe,” Henry comments, snapping you back into reality. “And how you bond with every customer. I had no idea men pay you just to talk to them sometimes.”
“Oh, you’d be surprised,” you nod all while grinding yourself onto Gareth, hands combing through his wavy hair and trailing down to graze his neck. “Some guys just come here just to vent. Business men, teachers, doctors...”
“That’s really nice,” Henry blushes.
“Bouncers too,” you wink at him. “You know, when they’re not clocked in and supposed to be working.”
Henry’s eyes widen as he realizes, and soon he’s back up and starting towards the door. You and Gareth share an innocent chuckle about it before carrying on with your business.
"I can tell that dude is lonely," Gareth makes the same observation. "He doesn't have that many friends outside work."
"I wonder why," you ponder aloud, doing a little dance on Gareth’s lap. "He's so nice."
"From what Eddie told me, it's hard for Henry to open up to people," your patron explains. "Dude had a fucked up home life when he was younger. Dad was a piece of shit to him and his sister. Abused the shit outta 'em and their mom."
There's a pattern here. You try not to think about it.
"Anyways," Gareth says pulling out a $20 bill. "Can you give me scratches on my back? Trying to make an ex flame jealous."
"You manipulative fuck," you banter, snagging the $20 from him anyway. "I'm sure you have your reasons though."
So you honor Gareth's requests and leave some sharp etchings on his back, one large scratch in the shape of a heart.
You scan the club as you work, searching for your sister. Max is spotted near the entrance of the club, acquainting herself with Lucas and Dustin. She also met Steve earlier today and admitted to you that she has an innocent crush on him.
Of course she would. Who wouldn’t have a crush on The King?
You smile at how easy Max makes friends. She tries not to look at you while working but sometimes her curiosity takes over.
Gareth nods towards her.
"I see your sister knows the big secret now."
"Yeah, one less thing to worry about," you shrug sheepishly.
"She's supportive, I'm assuming?"
"Very."
"That's good," Gareth rubs your back. "I'm happy for you."
“Thanks,” you smile.
You catch sight of Steve next as he walks over to you. He greets you with a warm kiss and rests a hand at your waist.
Eddie watches you with Steve and Gareth, attempting to remain composed and professional with Nina as he spots her on the pole.
"What is going on here?" Steve asks you.
"I'm trying to make one of Gareth's ol' lady friends jealous," you explain. "Leaving him scratches and all."
"I love your sharp ass nails," Gareth swoons. He hands you a five.
"You are just spoiling me today,” you coo. “You can pick out my nail color next, Gare.”
"Green," Gareth answers right away.
"Yeah, I second that," Steve agrees.
Steve leans in to kiss you. You kiss him back, affectionately, relishing in how beautiful Steve always made you feel. Meanwhile, Gareth watches, running his hands softly across your thighs and muttering a soft, “fuck…”
And then you hear Eddie clear his throat closeby you.
"Jesus H. Christ," you hear Eddie grimace.
Eddie sounds uncomfortable. Good. It is not until someone else speaks that you realize he was shaken up about something else.
“Well well well,” comes a voice. “Looking just as skanky as you did when I last saw you.”
You look to see the patron standing by the entrance. He’s the scariest he’s ever looked. Your heart sinks to the floor.
It’s hard for you to find the words. “You...”
“Boo,” he grins, amused at how startled you are. “Kinda insulting that you think all these men can give you more than I can.”
“What the fuck are you doing here?” you demand.
Frantic footsteps sound not too long after, and Henry comes spilling in. He looks mortified, panicked. He had one job and he failed to do it.
“Hargrove, I’m sorry!”
“Henry!” you scold him, almost at a scream-whisper. “You weren’t supposed to let him in!”
“I didn’t know!” Henry exclaims.
“I thought Eddie told you!”
“I forgot!” Henry says. “It all happened so fast.”
“Yeah, security here sucks,” the man you’re tempted to throw something at smirks.
A crowd starts to form, which is odd because no one said anything that inherently stood out. But energy doesn’t lie. The tension in the room is noticeable.
“You can’t be here,” Eddie’s voice darkens.
Eddie makes his way down from the stage and to the front of the club, Nina watching in confusion as everyone huddled around. Eddie clears his throat and stands with his chest propped forward, chin raised along with his gritted teeth.
“You’re not welcome here,” your boss snaps.
“That’s no way to talk to a customer…”
“I know who you’re here for and you can’t have her,” Eddie growls.
Eddie looks over at you. Making his way into the crossfire, Eddie creates even more space between the two of you. Henry stays where he’s at on high alert.
“And I own this joint. So I can refuse service to anyone… Billy.”
Your twin brother flashes a dangerous, amused smile. “I see I’ve become a household name.”
Billy inches closer to you, leaving you paralyzed in place.
He looks different from when you last saw him. A lot more muscular. His beer belly is gone, and he finally shaved that obnoxious porn stache that he swore drew in all the ladies. Billy looks more satisfied at your horror than angry at who you’ve become.
A million thoughts are racing through your head. How could your brother have possibly known where you are? Did you leave your location on? Did you butt-dial him? Was it 'twintuition'?
Then you remember he's Billy. And a sociopath like Billy always finds a way to win.
“Eddie Munson,” Billy continues. “Owner of The Hellfire Club. Drug dealer. Car jacker. The town FREAK who’s notorious for sleeping with his employees before attempting to sell them into a sex trafficking ring in the outskirts of town.”
“That is SO NOT TRUE!” you hear Chrissy scream from behind the boys.
“Oh, hey Cherry!” Billy chimes. “Huge fan of your work. So is Eddie, though. And a million other men, so what makes me special huh?”
Henry is hovering, lingering between Eddie and Billy with a stance you knew all too well. The angled torso, a hand floating ready to butt in. The memories come flooding into the room in the form of burning tears against your waterline. Your throat is tight.
“How…the fuck…” you choke. “Did you find me?”
Billy flashes you his phone. Looking through his cracked screen, you see that the evidence is all on Reddit. Sure enough, there you were, doing your thing in a video surrounded by tons of men, exposing your birthmark that’s oh so similar to Billy’s.
“This girl is so fucking hot!” a Redditor comments.
“What’s her name?” someone asks.
“She goes by Shy Girl,” another answers. “Hellfire Gentlemen’s Club in Hawkins, IN.”
It’s no surprise that Billy follows the ‘stripper’ Sub-Reddit. You’ve gone viral, so of course he was bound to see it.
“Ever heard of a digital footprint?” Billy questions darkly. “Shy Girl?”
You gulp. In the age of technology, you should’ve known that your cover would be blown if you stood out well enough. How could you be so stupid?
“Oh look!” your brother chuckles. “There it is, the biggest giveaway of all. Right front and center… your birthmark."
“You win,” is all you can say. “You can stop now.”
“I’m not trying to win anything,” Billy jeers. “I’m just saying, if you had a brain, you would’ve at least thought to cover it up with makeup or something.”
Eddie looks over at you with sad eyes. It’s the first time he truly looked helpless. A part of him also looks like his own cover is blown too. You can’t help but wonder why.
“Yeah, you could say I did my research,” Billy draws on. He shoves his phone back into his pocket. “It kept me occupied on the plane. The news articles aren’t hard to find either. Hawkins is pretty small. A whole shoebox compared to Leucadia.”
His eyes dart back to Eddie. “And I’ve read up a lot about you.”
“You know the media loves to twist things,” Eddie hisses. “Especially if everything about me fits the narrative they’re trying to sell.”
Billy decides to challenge him. “So you’re saying everything is fake news?”
Eddie doesn’t comment. It strikes you odd that Eddie doesn’t even try to defend himself. What could he and Billy possibly be talking about it?
“Funny, I on the contrary believe you’ve earned your reputation,” Billy insists.
“What is he talking about Eddie?” you ask.
“Just forget about it,” Eddie shuts down.
“Yeah, forget about it,” Billy somewhat agrees. He turns to you. “You’re coming with me.”
You turn to Max. She watches, terrified as Billy ushers you in the corner. You’re too drained to fight back so you let him. But when you finally meet his eyes, Billy looks like your brother again.
“Seriously, WHAT were you thinking?” his voice shows genuine concern.
Billy sounds more disappointed now than vengeful.
“This is all because of YOU,” you snap. “I had no choice.”
“That’s your bullshit excuse?” Billy demands, eyes welling up with tears. “You’re a fucking waitress! I’m sure Benny’s down the block would’ve sufficed.”
Billy’s an asshole, for sure. But at the end of the day he’s still a multifaceted human. When the trauma doesn’t take over, he’s a level-headed individual. A clear thinker with good critical thinking skills and an ability to read the room. Something you’ve spent your whole life second-guessing yourself over.
Your brother continues his tangent.
“YOU HAVEN’T DANCED IN YEARS, first of all. The only ‘stripping’ you know is when you go skinny dipping with your little hoe friends at Black's Beach. You don’t have a permit to dance, which I’m pretty sure is illegal somehow because EVERYWHERE ELSE in Indiana requires a stripping permit. You don’t even know anything about what this industry entails, yet you cannonball headfirst into it like it’s just easy. This industry is a hotspot for sex trafficking. Millions and women and little girls are kidnapped every year and forced into sex work, don’t you know that?”
Billy nudges the ribbons in your hair.
“Child-like ribbons in your hair too. You disgust me.”
He pauses. It’s like he has an epiphany. The devilish smirk returns.
“But maybe Eddie knew that,” he tuts, waving a stupid finger of his in the air. “BINGO! With the little experience you have, Eddie must’ve known you were naive. Desperate. A little bit of a slut. Eddie knew he just HAD to get his hands on you. Take advantage of you. Exploit you.”
“Shut up.”
You knew Billy was being dumb. But what he says makes sense. And in the depths of your wounded heart, what he said felt true in a sense. Because there was a time you did feel betrayed by Eddie. Meanwhile Eddie has gone pale.
All eyes are on you now, and not for the reason you want. Sure, it’s a strip club. But never have you ever felt so naked. Never has your soul ever felt so exposed.
“Yeah…” Billy grins. It’s like you can see the gears grinding in his head. He flashes Eddie a disgusted look. “That’s exactly what it is. You know, you give me the creeps, Munson. Sure you hear that a lot.”
“You give me the creeps…Hargrove,” Eddie counters. “With how IN LOVE you seem to be with your sister.”
Eddie takes a few steps towards him to elaborate.
“Showing up to the place she strips at…causing a scene when you see her on someone’s lap… and then proceeding to tell her no one will love her like you do?”
Eddie scoffs.
“Yeah. Totally not creepy.”
“We’re family, Eddie,” Billy sighs. “Families love each other. Of course you wouldn’t know anything about that.”
“Hey, douchebag—” Steve begins but Chrissy stops him.
“Too fucking far, Billy,” you plead. “Stop.”
“You know what else I found out?” Billy smiles. “Your boy toy Eddie comes from a long line of crooks.”
Billy turns to Eddie. “Your half brother Eagan is a con man in Montauk, New York. And your other brother Ansen Wayne back in Memphis got arrested for, guess what? Arson! Funny.”
“SHUT THE FUCK UP!” Chrissy roars again.
But Billy proceeds. “And if I’m not mistaken, your dad Al is a drug dealer who married one of his clients, your mother. And guess what? When she wasn’t bringing him any money? He pimp slapped her in broad daylight and eventually slit her throat.”
Billy looks you in the eyes when he says that.
“How tragic,” Billy breathes. “Dad killing Mom.”
Billy turns back to Eddie.
“One dysfunctional ass family. And a poor excuse of a son.”
“Takes one to know one,” Eddie spits.
Billy laughs and nods. You’re surprised that doesn’t set him off.
“I’m not entertaining this,” your brother refuses. “I’m trying to be a better person, but Munson you are pushing it. Nah, my family is where I draw the line. Come on, sis. You’re coming with me.”
Yanking you by the wrist, Billy pulls you along with him.
“No,” you refuse.
But his grip is too tight. Now you’re just along for the ride.
“I would never do anything to hurt your sister,” Eddie says, running after you both. Henry follows closely behind Eddie. “Surely that’s something you can’t say.”
“You’d never do anything to hurt her?” Billy halts challenging him with the most satisfied grin on his face. “You’d never do anything to hurt her?”
Eddie nods. Billy releases you, sending you flying forward into Max’s arms. She’s shaking when you wrap your arms around her for comfort.
“What happened to Isabelle then, Eddie?” Billy taunts him. “Court records are also public, you know.”
Isabelle. Eddie’s ex-girlfriend. How does Eddie’s ex-GF fit into Hellfire’s narrative? In your mind you always thought Isabelle was a random chick.
The whole room is silent. It’s like a wave washed over everybody. Eddie simply stands there, no visible reaction besides the look of defeat.
Something tells you something is very, very wrong. Finally, Eddie speaks.
“Don’t you EVER bring up my wife again,” Eddie’s voice is breaking. “I loved her with my whole heart.”
Your world stops. Everyone else’s keeps going.
“Your wife?” you exclaim. “You have a wife?”
Billy exudes a Joker-like laugh as he watches the lore unravel.
“Ex-wife,” Eddie corrects himself. “We’re separated.”
His gaze burns into Billy.
“Since you’re such a historian, Hargrove,” Eddie hisses. “I’m afraid you missed the part where Isabelle used me to get her hands on my business and then weaponized the fact that she’s a woman to try and tarnish it during our separation. But of course, it doesn’t feed your narrative about me so you’re purposely leaving it out.”
“That’s what you get then,” Billy’s tongue glides against his inner cheek. “For getting involved with an employee. They’re all the same. A bunch of gold-digging whores.”
It all makes sense now. You look over at Eddie. Plastered on his face is the same haunted eyes he had the night he tried to resist your advances. Now you know why Eddie was so hesitant to pursue you. He wasn’t playing hard to get. He was guarding his heart. And his business.
“So, you wanna tell us about the trafficking ring?” Billy questions.
“I didn’t try to sell her,” Eddie spat. “God dammit. Our marriage was bleeding into work so I had to send her to a different club. One I thought I trusted. But the owner stabbed me in the back also.”
“Yeah!” Chrissy adds. “He was an undercover pimp! Didn’t you read the court docs on the plane like you said?”
“He’s not exactly book smart, Chris,” Eddie smirks. “Too many big words for his big brain to handle.”
There’s nothing else for Billy to say. His failed attempt to paint Eddie as the bad guy and him as the hero did not go to plan. But as usual, Billy wants the last word.
“Stay away from my sister.”
And soon your wrists are suffocated by his grip again. You whimper in fear as Billy drags you along, angrily pulling you towards the exit while resisting your kicks and shoves.
“This is what’s gonna happen. You’re gonna go put your fucking clothes on,” Billy’s voice shakes. “Grab your shit, and you and Max are gonna come back home with me. Away from this shady bullshit.”
You can tell Billy is also terrified for you. But this is your story to write now. Not his. This is a narrative he cannot control.
“No!” you scream. “My new life is HERE.”
“The fuck it isn’t,” Billy denies. “Your life and Max’s lives are in California.”
“Are you deaf?” Steve demands. “She said no. Let her go.”
“Aw, now Walmart Ashton Kutcher has something to say!”
“Leave me alone, Billy,” you wail. “We are not going with you.”
“It’s all an inside job,” Billy is shaking now. “He’s no good for you, sis. Don’t you understand? How can you be so blind?”
“It’s my journey!” you roar. “And my life. You don’t get to control me anymore, especially since you’re part of the problem. And I’d rather be provided for by men like you than live with you ever again.”
Billy can only chuckle. “You’re delusional.”
He grabs Max on the way out.
“Max come on.”
“NO!” Max refuses.
Steve jumps in front of her and pulls her behind him. Billy rushes to grab Steve but is pushed back by Henry.
“Why are you grabbing Harrington?” Henry demands.
“Why’s he grabbing my sister?”
You’re waiting for Billy to face Henry’s wrath. He’s already trying to create space between the both of you so that you can wriggle free.
“HEY!”
To your surprise, the fist that meet’s Billy’s nose isn’t Henry’s.
“EDDIE!” Chrissy shrieks.
“WHOA MAN!” Steve screams, trying to run and stop the fight but Henry tackles him.
“EDDIE WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” Dustin demands. “EDDIE, STOP!”
Billy is blindsided by Eddie with little to no time to react. Eddie gets two good punches in when he’s sprawled on top of him.
But Billy is quick to bounce back. Already accustomed to punches, Billy allows Eddie a few more blows to tire him out. When his hair gets in the way, Billy grabs Eddie by the wrist and tosses him off, hoisting himself over him to get him in a headlock.
“Son…of…a BITCH!” Eddie elbows him.
And as Billy scrunches to block his ribcage, Eddie gets him with a good left hook and a right cross-jab.
Blood splatters from Billy’s nose onto the surrounding area.
“HOLY SHIT!” Dustin shrieks.
“BILLY!” Maxine screams.
“You guys, STOP!” you order.
You rush over to your brother and attempt to pry him off. Steve rushes to Eddie and tries to do the same.
Billy’s stumbling back, unusual since he always wins fights. This is causing you to stumble back and lose your grip on him. Eddie gets a few more good punches in.
Jab. Jab. Jab. Jab-cross. Upper cut. Upper cut. And a seismic kick to the solar plexus.
Eddie Munson is strong.
“EDDIE, LEAVE HIM ALONE!” cries Chrissy. “YOU’RE GONNA KILL HIM IF YOU DON’T STOP.”
“Yeah?” Eddie mutters. “Well that’s kinda the plan.”
When he hears that, Henry stops whatever he’s doing to charge towards Billy and Eddie. You feel yourself grow lightheaded because of the amount of blood that has been expelled. You can almost smell the iron.
“Nope. That’s enough,” Henry declares, dragging your boss away this time.
Eddie has the advantage now during this time, and he uses all of it, punching Billy mercilessly into the ground. Billy tries to get up, but fails, and just when he’s not looking, Eddie sneaks a few roundhouse kicks to his head and neck.
The blood starts to pool.
“EDDIE, STOP!” everyone continuously chants.
“EDDIE, LET IT GO MAN!” Gareth begs.
“EDDIE, GET OFF OF HIM NOW!” Chrissy pleads.
“IT’S NOT WORTH IT!” Steve says to him.
“YES THE FUCK IT IS!” Eddie roars. “IT IS WORTH IT!”
The sound of glass shattering fills your ears as you look over at the boys. Henry managed to tackle Eddie in one brisk movement, unfortunately taking a small table that housed some beer bottles on it with them.
Now it smells like rust and Corona.
Gareth and Steve take over now, pulling Eddie away while Eddie cusses Billy out through his bloody nose. Meanwhile, Max rushes to Billy’s side and urges him to get out. Henry runs to her aid, dragging out your volatile twin brother so he wouldn’t harm anybody else. Billy’s out of sight now, but the thought of him still lingering in Hawkins until he sees you two again is unsettling.
“Whoa,” Steve exhales.
“What?” you ask him, crossing your arms in frustration.
“Eddie just fought someone,” he pants. “Your brother, Billy at that.”
You try to shrug it off. “Big deal,” you say. “Fights happen all the time here.”
“You don’t understand Hargrove,” Henry says, walking up you. “Eddie never fights anyone.”
You turn to face Henry.
“That’s what I’m here for,” the unscathed bodyguard explains.
———————-
The first person you go over to is Max. Consoling each other, you both hug one another and rock back and forth.
You look off into the corner and see Dustin with a tampon, trying to shove it up Eddie’s bloody nose while Nancy watches in amusement. Eddie swats Dustin’s hands away, mumbling, “Get that shit away from me” and setting for Kleenex instead.
“Shy Girl,” Nancy calls out. “Please come and get your man.”
Confused that she’s even talking to you that way, it dawns on you that Nancy is talking about Eddie. You walk towards Nancy, who is behind the bar, supervising Eddie and Dustin from a distance.
“Do you have some ice?” you ask her.
She holds up a pack she had been preparing.
“Way ahead of you love,” Nancy says.
You chuckle and thank Nancy as you take the ice from her. She gives you a nod, you’re welcome.
“He’s not my man, by the way,” you add, correcting her. “Just did something really sweet.”
“Well does his ass know that?” Nancy raises a brow. “Only a dumbass in love does shit that crazy and stupid.”
You look over at Eddie. His eyes find you at the same time. Chrissy is over in the corner with Nina, talking her down from the anxiety witnessing a fight that bloody must’ve caused her. Steve is over at the lair still, thinking. You can’t read the expression on his face.
Your grip on the ice pack tightens as you walk closer to Eddie. He gives you a nod and a terrible excuse of a wave, slowly wincing in pain after the slightest raise of his left arm.
“You are vile,” you say in his voice from the day it all fell apart. You extend your hand with the ice pack in it to him.
Feeding into your truce, Eddie looks up at you with a faint smile. He takes the ice pack in his hand.
“I prefer the term protective,” he parrots you.

more NINA fuckery and are current El's actions showing up in '79 footage?
El's initial NINA confusion is setting in, and Owens & co are watching in the control room like "she's rejecting it".
on these four monitors you can see all 4 corners of the rainbow room, which is why I seized on this screenshot to map out the rainbow room cameras (with very architectural precision thank you) and get the lay of the land for the rest of this. I noted in red my names for the cameras and their locations in the room.
then I noticed that Henry and El are visible in the footage, which I noted in yellow. they're standing where they're standing during "well well" - Henry centered in the rainbow arch, and El is facing him and the double doors.
does this indicate that El running around confused is showing up in the 1979 footage?
"the "well well" moment really happened in 1979, that's what the tapes are of!"
is it? where they're standing on the tape isn't where they're standing in the "real" memory (if I can safely call anything that).
El and Henry keep having this same confrontation with her facing him and the doors. but when she finally braces herself to deal with this, she and Henry sidestep weirdly purposefully into this position - perpendicular to the doors. since she glitches into little El during this sequence, I would take this as the "real" memory - meaning, as this moment really happened in 1979.
if that's so, why not have them stand the same way in the tape?
or am I supposed to think current El's footwork just happened to exactly match what went down in 1979?
anyway, back to the cameras and what I actually started out this post for.
here's Brenner in the control room, having his NINA conversation with El.
why is one monitor on the right missing now? that's the monitor that was showing Camera B footage in the Owens scene up above.
could this just be a different bank of monitors than earlier? here's a zoomed out shot from the Owens scene - note the two heart monitors or whatever up above. maybe the table is scooted over a bit to get a better composed shot of Brenner, but this looks like the same place to me, no?
lemme zoom in and number these suckers so we can get on with this.
in case anyone's actually following along, note that the monitors in the Brenner scene don't correspond to the same cameras they did in the Owens scene.
although a monitor is oddly missing, all four corners of the rainbow room are still represented. however, we still have some interesting stuff to talk about here.
why is one monitor being spent on hallway footage?
Monitors 4 and 6 - that's Camera C view - are duplicates. accounting for a teensy change in monitor perspectives, I'm ready to call them exactly the same footage, down to the people in the room being in the same positions. I made it a gif because it's easier to see in motion.
Monitors 3 and 7 are weird for two reasons.
3 and 7 come from the same corner of the room - Camera B view - but they're not exactly the same angle. and these cameras are bolted to the wall.
I'll give you that they can probably pan left/right. idk that that satisfies me, but there's nothing that satisfies me about the second issue:
in Monitor 3, the puzzle table is pulled out into the room, and the plinko board is leaning up against the wall, not in use. but in Monitor 7, the plinko board is set up the way it is in the scenes where El plays with it, and the puzzle table is scooted over towards the wall.
I could just be misunderstanding how NINA works, which is 900% possible, but: isn't the idea to show El all possible footage of the same moment at the same time for the most immersive "memories" possible?
to plug this into the timeline theory: could I take this as evidence that NINA is showing El not just multiple camera angles of the same moment, but the same moment in different timelines?
El's "I don't understand!" shot spins around so we see all four cameras. the room is the plinko-not-in-use configuration (consistent with Monitor 3 I think).
but El is not visible in the footage on Monitor 3. she's not visible in any monitors in the Brenner scenes, as far as I can spot. if she was visible during "well well," where is she now?
one of the times El bursts into the rainbow room is a whole different time.
I'm not the first to point this out, but this needs to be said in this discussion. she enters the rainbow room 8 times in this sequence (including both physically walking in and respawning). actually... sigh. let's just look at all of them.
most are consistent: Two and Three are playing chess, I think Six and Seven are at those drawing tables, and whichever kid that is is doing his puzzle alone at the table.
Entry #5 is totally different from the others. puzzle kid is still there, but that isn't Two or Three playing chess. and they have the kid whip around to look judgmentally at El so we get a good look at his face. actually, who are these kids? do I even recognize them? and I also don't know which two kids those are at the drawing table, but they're both little white kids this time.
and - I realize this relies entirely on how I happened to number the monitors earlier in this post, but - 8 entries into the rainbow room and #5 being different... 8 monitors and #5 missing... that worked out nicely. also Monitor 2 showing hallway footage and Entry #2 being the only one where she didn't go out into the hallway (she just respawned standing in the same spot). but then.... if this was really anything, plinko should be set up in Entry #7... idk man, my brain hurts
final thought: you know how the lights flicker before she respawns? I gotta think this through more before I'm serious about it, but just to toss it out there: what if the flickering lights actually indicate not (just?) power use, but a timeline switch? I don't mean in NINA, I mean like, every time in the whole show.
and that's all the brain I have for today!

Brennry Kane: Henry Kane, Henry Creel, ST5 Leaks, and Brenner (ft The Henward Brenner Merge)
So, on Discord the other day, I mentioned that the new S5 leaks of Jamie/Henward reminds me of Kane from Poltergeist 2:
And FOREVER ago on Discord, I was talking about Poltergeist 2, the parallels to the Creels, and Kane’s parallels to Brenner:
And so, now, I want to talk about both of those things/how the parallels between this Henward leak & Henry Kane connect to the parallels between Henry Kane and Brenner.
But before we get into that, let’s do a quick overview of who Henry Kane is.
Who Is Henry Kane?
So, in the first Poltergeist movie, there’s a ghost called The Beast:
And then, in the second Poltergeist movie, it’s revealed that The Beast was once a man named Reverend Henry Kane, who led his cult followers to their deaths in order to gain more power, and now, Kane/The Beast is walking the earth once more and appearing as he did in life, despite being long-dead (although there's a whole thing re: how he can't technically actually die which makes me think of the whole "Mummies never die" line from S1 versus Brenner Sr's mummy imagery):
Now, let’s look at the parallels between this S5 BTS Henward vs Henry Kane.
S5 BTS Henward vs Henry Kane
So, when we look at this shot of S5 BTS Henward with this blonde girl, it’s definitely a parallel to Kane with Carol Anne:
And, of course, Henward’s whole outfit with the fedora etc is very similar to Kane’s outfit.
But let’s take a look at Brenner versus Henry Kane, because that’s where the real similarities lie.
Brenner vs Henry Kane
So, what similarities does Henry Kane have to Brenner (including Martin Brenner, Richard Brenner, TFS Brenenr Jr, and Brenner Dr/Captain Brenner under the same “Brenner” umbrella because god knows who is who at this point)? Well:
Both Kane and Brenner shownup to families’ doors, claiming to want to “help” them, and the scene of Kane showing up at the Freeling family’s house is very, very similar to the scene of Brenner showing up at the Wheeler house in S1.
In Poltergeist 2, Kane shows up at the Freeling house and talks to the parents (especially the father, Steven) and claims that he’s trying to help them, and then, in ST1, Brenner shows up at the Wheeler house, talks to them (and Ted answers the door, much like Steven Freeling) and claims that he’s trying to help them/help Mike:
And Kane also talks about how Steven “doesn’t have to believe him,” versus Brenner’s fixation on belief and trust & the constant use of the word “belief” surrounding Brenner:
(And also, the whole “asking for permission” thing makes me think of the emphasis on SAYING things in TFS and how that could tie to the whole belief thing, like I talked about in this post and this post.)
Both Kane and Brenner are connected to priests/priest imagery.
Kane’s full title is “Reverend Kane,” as he was a priest/cult leader.
Brenner is frequently connected to priest imagery/reference in ST, like how I talked in this post quite awhile back about the parallels between Brenner and the priest from The Exorcist & the idea of Brenner masquerading as a priest as part of the exorcism done at the Creel House.
There’s also the whole “Mr Newby vs Father Newby” thing versus Brenner Sr’s parallels to Mr/Father Newby.
Both Kane and Brenner are connected to vampire imagery/are vampire coded.
Kane can’t enter a house without permission, just like a vampire (and also is weirdly “immortal” like a vampire):
And Brenner has a TON of vampire references/coding. For example, in TFS, he literally takes Henry’s blood, and also doesn’t age at the end of TFS despite a 20 year time jump. 15 year old Brenner also has dark/slicked-down, Dracula-esque hair. Plus, like I talked about in this post, in-show Brenner straight up doesn’t have a reflection in some of the NINA scenes, just like vampires lacking reflections.
TFS Brenner also behaves eerily similarly to Lestat from Interview with the Vampire (which also has me thinking about the fact that in-show Henward also behaves a bit and looks like Lestat during the 1979 massacre versus the fact that during those massacre scenes, he suddenly has the Brenner-styled hair, and the idea that Brenner may have been “possessing”/puppeting him within NINA during the massacre, something I’ll touch on again in a bit), which is on the S4 board:
(Which, all of Brenner’s vampire coding versus Vecna getting referred to as “sleeping Dracula,” in S4 is yet another point for Brecna)
And also, as mentioned earlier, the vampire-coded scene of Kane talking to the family & trying to get permission to come into the house in Poltergeist is very, very similar to the S1 scene of Brenner at the Wheeler house.
Costuming parallels & visual similarities
Kane is an old man with white hair and a black suit, and Brenner has a very similar look, especially in S1, being an old man with white hair and a black suit:
Kane and Brenner’s shared demon imagery and The Beast vs The Brennergorgon
So, not only was Kane The Beast back in Poltergeist 1, but in Poltergeist 2, Kane also ends up shapeshifting into this weird, grey creature that Steven spits out (much like Will spitting up the UD slug):
Which, that grey creature form that Kane shapeshifts into reminds me quite a lot of the ST Demogorgon:
And Kane also gets referred to as “a man filled with a demon”:
And so, then, when it comes to Brenner, that brings us to The Brennergorgon. I talked in this post about Brenner and the ST “Demogorgon,” versus the DND Demogorgon & the fact that Demogorgon in DND is the “Prince of Demons,” and the idea that Brenner represents the Demogorgon & the idea that Brenner was the demon in the Creel house (see: Victor talking about how the demon took his kids versus Brenner’s longrunning habit of stealing children):
But one thing I didn’t really talk about in that main Brennergorgon post (but have talked about elsewhere) is the idea that in addition to Brenner symbolically representing the DND Demogorgon, Brenner (one of the Brenners, at least), is likely ALSO the grey shapeshifting Doppelganger-Demogorgon creature, which would then be another parallel between Brenner and Kane, with both of them transforming/shapeshifting into grey supernatural creatures.
Kane possessing people vs Brenner’s possession stuff
So, Kane is able to possess people- he possesses Steven Freeling during Poltergeist 2.
And then, when it comes to Brenner, there’s what I just talked about in the last bullet point re: Brenner being the demon in the Creel house & the way that demons possess people (like Kane does) versus Brenner’s demon imagery.
But then there’s ALSO stuff like what I’ve talked about in this post re: NINA, and the idea of Brenner “possessing” people (such as Henward, and especially NINA Henward) in a similar way to how Agent Smith “possesses” Bane in The Matrix 3:
And hell, the way that Kane possesses Steven is really similar to the way that Smith possesses Bane- in both cases, the possessed person keeps their usual appearance (so Steven and Bane both look normal on the outside, just like how Henward looks like Henward in those BTS pics), but their mannerisms and speech patterns are altered (Steven gains Kane’s mannerisms, Bane gains Smith’s mannerisms), which a.) is just like the weird Brenner-esque Henward during NINA, and b.) is just like what I talked about in this post (a post I’m also going to come back to later in this current post) regarding the fact that this new BTS S5 Henward shares mannerisms (and costuming parallels) with TFS Brenner:
Both Kane and Brenner are connected to invisibility
Kane is able to turn invisible. Meanwhile, Brenner Sr’s bandages make him look eerily similar to The Invisible Man-
-and the whole point of Project Rainbow was to try and make the Eldridge and its crew (of which Brenner Sr was captain) invisible:
So, point is, Kane and Brenner have bunch of connections, and while Henward and Kane also have connections, the connections between Kane and Brenner are much stronger, and the connections between Kane and Henward are likely due to some of the weird Brenner-Henward connections/the weird Brenner-Henward merge stuff that I’ve talked about before, and that I’m going to talk about again in this next section.
How The Brenner-Kane Stuff Could Connect To S5 BTS Kane-Paralleled Henward & A Brenner-Henward Merge
I talked in this post recently about the fact that the Henward in these S5 leaks not only dresses similarly to Brenner, with the vest outfit & very similar style of pants, but also does the same “hands clasped behind the back” pose that TFS Brenner does:
And there’s also what I’ve talked about in posts like this post, this post, and this post, re: TFS Brenner and Henry and the weird connections between them/the weird “Brenner is somehow Henry but wasnt always actually Henry” stuff, as well as what I’ve talked about in posts like this post, this post, this post, and this post, re: one of the in-show Brenners getting merged with one of the Henwards like how Seth Brundle got merged with a fly in The Fly.
And so, with all of that in mind, PLUS what I just talked about in the previous section of this post re: how Henry Kane is connected not just to Henry Creel, but also (and more strongly) to Brenner, I wonder if Henry/Edward is trapped with Brenner in some sort of Brenner-Henward merged/if Henry/Edward is being “possessed” by Brenner like how Kane possesses Steveb and how Agent Smith possesses Bane.
And so, I wonder if we’ll get a scene of Henry acting normal towards that blonde girl (Holly, Jane, Daughter Virginia, whoever she is) versus his demeanour suddenly changing into a more Brenner-esque demeanour & if we’ll get a parallel to TFS Alice’s “you’re not Henry, you’re not him,” scene, and if this blonde girl might pull out some sort of line about how Henry’s “not stuck/lost in there/in a Place, but instead, is stuck/lost in Him/in Brenner’s mind” or something along those lines.
Which, something extra interesting that’s stuck out to me re: the idea of a person as a place/being stuck inside a person/inside a mind etc is the connections between peoples’ names versus the names of places in ST.
For example, like I also talked about in this post recently, Nancy’s fake name when she goes to Pennhurst is “Ruth,” versus “Ruth, Nevada” being pointed out to us in S4 (and TFS Henry and TFS Brenner both being from Nevada):
And like James talked about, Henward’s S5 outfit is also a parallel to Indiana Jones- Indiana Jones, who adopts a name (Indiana) that’s the same name as a place (the state of Indiana, which is also where Hawkins is).
And then, of course, we also have the “you can’t spell America without Erica” moment:
Point is, ST has a little running pattern of associating the names of people with the names of places, which could then connect to the whole idea of a person as a place/being trapped inside of a person.
Conclusion
Long story short: Brenner’s fingers are all over this, as usual, and I REALLY don’t think that this S5 BTS Henward scene & the Henry Kane parallels are going to end up with Henry himself being this evil, Kane-esque figure. Instead, I think that there’s something deeper going on, and that Brenner is definitely involved.
Even if I’m entirely wrong about the whole “this S5 Henward has Brenner merged with him” idea, the overall point is just that this isn’t solely a Henward parallel re: Kane, and that there’s more going on here than “Henry is being creepy and evil.”
(And also, as a final little sidenote, it’s interesting to me that Kane took his cult followers down into a cave to die so that he could harvest their souls to gain power versus TFS Henry having gotten lost in the cave in Nevada. And Kane also absorbed the souls of his followers, which is what gave him extra powers, which makes me think of the whole “when 001 kills, he consumes” thing versus the idea of a version of 001 having absorbed a Brenner and the whole Brecna thing/Brenner being connected to the “consuming people/absorbing people” stuff, especially considering the Brenner-Demogorgon Doppelganger stuff & the way that DND Doppelgangers can consume/absorb the personalities, memories etc of their victims before shapeshifting into them)

I'm not gonna make as in-depth a post about it as my other DW analyses, but a month or so ago I watched the season 1 episode "Dalek" and now I'm thinking about it in relation to what Vecna's ending might look like.
A lot of people complain when they hear folks (such as myself and my friends) say they want Vecna's end to be tragic in some way. They interpret it as us saying we want him to be redeemed, or forgiven, or be made into a "good guy" who actually did nothing wrong, or whatever. Which (setting aside all the Henry/Edward stuff, which I'd argue is a separate discussion anyway) isn't the case at all. Not necessarily, at least. Vecna has done a lot of heinous things that can't be overlooked.
However, that doesn't mean he's entirely unsympathetic. He's very relatable in his motives and is a fun way to explore revenge and justice in the extremes. He's an example of the cracks in the Capital S System. However, I would agree that Vecna as a person and as a concept shouldn't be given a full pass on everything he's done just because his reasoning has a strong foundation.
"Dalek" offers a really interesting alternative where the Dalek in the episode is given multiple chances to "redeem" itself or is shown sympathy, only to constantly push back against it and refuse the kindness offered to it up until the very end. Even so, its eventual self-destruction is still tragic.
This is for multiple reasons, but the one I want to introduce here first to set the tone is: It's tragic because there's no changing what's been done to the Dalek, what the Dalek has done, and the general circumstances of what a Dalek is and their history. Rose wants to help the Dalek, but it's simply not feasible given the circumstances.
So, let's get into some of this episode.
We open on the Doctor and Rose landing in an underground bunker in Utah, USA, having followed a signal "calling for help." Inside this bunker are rows and rows of glass cases containing extraterrestrial artifacts, owned and collected by a man named Henry van Statten. We learn that one of these is a live specimen, which van Statten keeps in "The Cage," where they've been attempting to get it to speak for some time, often resorting to physically harming it and making it scream. Okay, NINA silo.
The Doctor goes in to speak to it, since van Statten wants to know what it is, and we get this exchange:
Some abridged Doctor Who history to explain this interaction: The Daleks are an alien race that's been around for the entire run of the show, first introduced in the original series. As it pertains to the 2005 reboot, early in the show we learn that the Doctor is the last Time Lord in existence because all of them died in the Last Great Time War. The Last Great Time War was fought between the Time Lords and the Daleks, and it was ultimately ended by the Doctor themself killing (or sealing away) both the Time Lords and the Daleks to stop the conflict and save the universe(s).
The Daleks and the Time Lords have had beef for... basically forever, as far as I know. The Daleks also make multiple returns throughout the rest of the series and still remain a recurring antagonist, though I don't know what's been going on with them past like... season 7 or so. We even get a few more sympathetic portrayals of them, but we don't need to talk about that today.
I should also briefly explain here that the Daleks were bred and evolved to hate. They exist only to kill things that aren't Daleks because they see anything that isn't a Dalek as "wrong." They have such a strong will to live in order to push this regimen that they almost don't die, as their bodies will simply refuse to do so, unless ordered or killed by force. Okay, Vecna. In short: they basically only know hatred and anger, and anything else simply isn't part of their genetics. There's some nuance to this in the greater lore, but I won't touch on that here because it's not introduced in this episode.
Anyway, back to the episode!
Once the Doctor realizes that the Dalek is damaged and can't actually kill him, he starts laying into it, circling it and asking "What are you good for?" and "What's the point of you? You're nothing." The Dalek says it's awaiting orders (something it's bred for), and the Doctor breaks the news that all the other Daleks have been destroyed by him and it won't be getting any orders.
Admitting to his own self-hatred, the Doctor switches on the chains holding the Dalek, electrocuting it. The Dalek begs for pity, and the Doctor says, "Why should I [have pity]? You never did." Then, van Statten enters The Cage with guards and pulls the Doctor out, at which point the Dalek returns to refusing to speak.
The Doctor speaks to van Statten more, telling him about the Time War, learning how the Dalek fell from the sky "like a meteorite" and surmising that it must have fallen through time as the only survivor. And at this point, van Statten smugly eyes up the Doctor, now knowing that he, too, is an alien not of this Earth, and chains him up to be studied and tortured just like the Dalek. There's honestly so much I could say about van Statten and his similarities to Brenner, so I might do that some other time.
Meanwhile, Rose, who's been tagging along with van Statten's assistant, unaware of what's happened thus far, sees security footage of the Dalek being tortured by one of van Statten's scientists and goes to The Cage to investigate and try to help.
She talks to the Dalek, asking if it's in pain, saying that she can help because she has her friend, the Doctor, with her. The Dalek says yes, it is in pain.
Rose continues to insist they help, but the Dalek says that its race is dead and it will simply die alone. Rose places a gentle hand against its "head," which burns her, and as she pulls away, that Dalek shouts, "Genetic material extrapolated. Initiate cellular reconstruction."
Having gotten DNA from Rose, a time traveler, the Dalek is able to regenerate, fixing all of its damage and breaking free of its chains before hacking out of The Cage and gaining access to the entire bunker. In short, it starts killing people indiscriminately and drains all power from the bunker, from Utah, and from the entire west coast of the USA, also downloading all of the information from the internet at the same time.
Most of the rest of the episode is an extended chase scene, where Rose and the assistant, Adam, are trying to get up to a higher level of the bunker, though are often relegated to stairwells and detours in an attempt to keep the Dalek locked away as deep as possible. At one point, Rose and Adam are being escorted by an armed guard when they come face to face with the Dalek in a stairwell, and the armed guard starts trying to talk it down:
Martin "but but but I locked you kids up because I loved you" Brenner, over here.
The first major hint that we start to see something is awry with the Dalek is it and Rose making eye contact, and Rose leaving the interaction feeling like the Dalek saw her as more than just a target for extermination, and rather that "it knows [her]."
Then, after some more chasing and some more mass murder, the Dalek addresses the Doctor. It says that, now with no place to get orders from, it will follow "the Primary Order," or the "Dalek instinct to destroy" and conquer. The Doctor asks why, though. What's the point of doing that at this point when it's the only Dalek left? The Dalek can't answer that and just asks what it should do, wherein we get this impeccable line that aired on public television in the year 2005:
He rips into the Dalek again, really showing his anger as he screams, "Why don't you just die!?" at which point the Dalek responds with, "You would make a good Dalek" before ceasing communication. Mic drop of the goddamn century!!! That scene still drives me absolutely batshit. Anyway.
Rose and Adam are rushing to try and escape the vault portion of the bunker, but they're running out of time. Adam makes it through the final door as it's shutting, but Rose doesn't and is now trapped with the Dalek. Rose talks to the Doctor over her cellphone, telling him that it wasn't his fault and she wouldn't have missed any of this for the world. The Dalek fires its laser, the call drops, and the Doctor reluctantly accepts that she's dead.
However, unbeknownst to him, the Dalek didn't actually kill Rose.
They have a brief back-and-forth, and Rose questions the Dalek's hesitation to kill her.
The Dalek speaks to the Doctor again, revealing that Rose is actually alive and uses her as leverage to get him to open the bulkhead and let the two of them out. Rose pleads with the Doctor to not open the door, but the Dalek uses the Doctor's emotions against him, saying, "What use are emotions, if you will not save the woman you love?"
Rose and the Dalek take an elevator up to where the Doctor and van Statten & co. are hanging out, with the Dalek all the while continuing to act strangely.
The Dalek approaches van Statten, threatening to kill him for torturing it, but Rose tells it not to do it, and it listens. She asks it what else it could want that doesn't involve killing, and the Dalek answers with "freedom." Vecna when...
Rose takes the Dalek ahead, closer to the surface. It blasts a hole in the roof, bringing in a ray of sunlight. Rose says she thought she'd never feel it again, at which point the Dalek asks what it feels like before opening its metal casing to expose the actual Dalek inside. It feels the sun on its skin and reaches out toward the light.
In this moment of vulnerability, the Doctor appears, having grabbed one of the alien-made guns that van Statten has in a feeble attempt to actually kill the Dalek. He yells at Rose to get out of the line of fire, but she refuses, even when he tries to justify it with the number of people the Dalek killed that day, or the fact that it was the Dalek race that created the downfall of the Time Lords. She urges the Doctor to pause and just look at what the Dalek is doing.
Love a good TFS word.
The Dalek asks, "Why do we survive?" and the Doctor doesn't have an answer. When the Dalek once again says that it's the last of its kind, the Doctor explains that it no longer is a Dalek. Having absorbed Rose's DNA for its regeneration, it's begun mutating into something new. Rose asks why that wouldn't be a good thing, but, as I explained earlier, it's because Daleks view themselves as superior, so if they're no longer a Dalek, then they're not worth living.
The Dalek is experiencing human thoughts and emotions, ones that it can't, nor wants, to comprehend, and it asks Rose to order it to die, saying that "This is not life. This is sickness. I shall not be like you!" With some more pushing, Rose finally relents, quietly saying, "Do it."
Guy who says he's not gonna go as in-depth before proceeding to do so anyway. But trust me, I could say a lot more about this episode, I just wanna keep this brief and explore this one concept without the plethora of off-topic potential references.
I hope you can see some of the bones of what I'm getting at in how this could potentially be applied as inspiration for ST5, but let's get into some of my thoughts.
1) Paralleling the Doctor and the Dalek
This is something I've talked about in a lot of my other DW posts so I won't rehash it too much, but it's incredibly telling to me that we, once again, get this emphasis on muddying the waters between "good guy" and "bad guy."
Through the season, we've seen the Doctor grieving his people, constantly saying he's the last Time Lord in the universe and being generally depressed about it. We're very frequently reminded of how sad he is about it, and we're meant to be sad about it, too. More often than not, it's meant as a way to show a deeper bond between him and his companion whenever he shares that information.
Then, we meet this Dalek who is also the last of its kind in the universe, and who is also suddenly made to grieve the loss of its people. From the get-go, it's framed as a sympathetic creature begging for help as it's tortured, and only once the Doctor's bias is brought to light do we get any sort of inkling of an opposing stance.
Then, almost right away, we see their roles essentially swapped. Sure, the Dalek is a formidable opponent with an innate desire to kill everything it sees and perhaps maybe should be eliminated for the sake of the greater good. However, the Dalek is weak and vulnerable, with no way to defend itself, and the Doctor does the objectively shitty thing and tries to kill it while it's cornered. The entire episode has a bad ick about it. Even if the Doctor is technically justified, you still feel bad watching him take advantage of a situation to harm a defenseless creature.
The Dalek says it itself: the Doctor would make a good Dalek, allowing his hatred to drive him to make some morally fucked up decisions. He encourages his fear and rage to guide his hand, and it's not until he has an outside perspective - specifically from someone he cares about the opinion of immensely - that he backs down. If and when we get a similar scenario with Will and someone else having to talk him down... I'm seated.
In the end, it's hard to have sympathy for the Doctor without also extending that to the Dalek.
It very much makes me think of the larger fandom's perspective on Henry in ST, and how they'll dish out heaps of sympathy and empathy for the other characters, and even encourage them to do shitty things for the sake of "revenge" or "taking what they deserve," but then turn around and look at Henry's objectively worse situation and claim that he doesn't deserve that same courtesy simply because of a slightly less appealing past.
To specifically tie it to comparing the Doctor and the Dalek, I'm looking at how we're meant to compare Henry and Will to one another. We see two sensitive boys who come from imperfect households with a desire to be loved and accepted for who they are. We see them go through hardships beyond our imaginations and, the key here, is how their situations during and thereafter are different.
We see the perspective of the Doctor first, and we feel bad for him! When he attacks the Dalek, it feels justified given the history between their races. In ST, we see the perspective of Will first, learning everything he's been through, and thus when he says "we have to kill [Vecna]," it makes sense! We've been led to believe that everything that's happened to Will has been enabled by this one guy, so of course it's justified to want to put a stop to him, and we cheer on the other characters when they come to Will's aid.
But then we get the perspective of the Dalek. We see it admit that it's in pain, that it's sad, that it yearns for freedom and an end to its torture. In ST, we learn more about Vecna, about his (alleged) past, and the trials he's been through to shape him into who he is today, and his desire to make things better. It, then, also makes sense for these characters to react the way they do, even if it's not ideal, and even if their methods and motives aren't the most morally clean.
(I'd also be remiss if I didn't at least briefly tap in on the whole "perspective" thing with what James is discussing in his upcoming big thesis post about TFS. Definitely keep an eye out for it, because it's a super interesting exploration of perspective and how that paints certain behaviors/scenes in different lights than we may have initially been led to believe.)
When I first watched ST4, I wasn't in the fandom at all. I was entirely unaware of the vitriol being slung at Vecna and Henry. I watched him do all these inexcusable things, but then... we have NINA Henry explain what (allegedly) happened and why he is where he is, and I thought... oh.
We're told that this guy had a good reason for doing everything he did. Even if everything he's done is reprehensible, I still sat there thinking "wow, he didn't deserve any of that, everything could have been avoided if he was just treated with decency."
With the Dalek, even after we see what it's done, we're meant to feel bad for it. Should it be forgiven? Perhaps not, but it was just doing the only thing it knew how to do after being put in a situation by someone else (van Statten) that allowed it to do the damage that it did, much like Brenner essentially enabling the creation of Vecna by cornering a child into the lab and forcing his hand.
All in all, it really pushes you to accept that someone who is "good" can do bad things because they think it's what should be done, and someone who is "bad" can be offered a chance to change and become better, and it doesn't even have to be detraction if they refuse that help. And, ultimately, I wouldn't be surprised if Vecna is offered help, but refuses it because it's too late. Not because he's being petulant and stubborn, but because there's genuinely no point, much like with the Dalek (even if the Dalek is being more petulant and stubborn than anything).
2) Vecna and the Daleks
By no means do I want it to come off like I'm directly correlating Vecna to the Daleks. There's too many key differences, particularly in what they are, for me to do that with a straight face.
I already explained that Daleks are born and evolved to hate. That's the only emotion they feel, because anything else would give them doubt in their Primary Order. Meanwhile, Vecna very much is a person. Even if he's not fully human, there's a human core there that allows him to hesitate and feel something other than disdain for humanity (I will always and forever stare at the way he kept El alive. Sir, I know you're not that cocky. Just kill her. Unless she....... means something to you......?).
Throughout ST, everything that comes out of the UD is distinctly nonhuman. I remember very early on in ST4 thinking it was weird that they made something from the UD so close to human. So, even if we're led into the story believing that Vecna is something purely monstrous, by the end we're shown that he is, in fact, still a human and always has been a human.
It's similar, if not slightly inverted, to what happens with the Dalek in this episode: We open on this strange alien creature and learn it was the reason for the downfall of the Time Lords, but by the end, it's been infused with enough human DNA that it becomes even harder to treat it with cruelty.
And I know I said I wasn't going to get into the deeper lore of the Daleks, but I have to just mention one of the myths of their creation from the short story "We are the Daleks!" published in 1973:
So like... um... anyway... just chew on that a little bit, I guess!!
As a final note for this thought, I do also find it interesting that even their motives could be considered similar. The Daleks kill everything that isn't a Dalek. And, yes, it is because of hatred, but it's also specifically about guaranteeing their own survival and making the universe fit for them. Not too far off from that, we have Vecna wanting to reshape the world into what he wants it to be so that he can exist freely. It's not exactly one-to-one, especially given that Vecna's motives are more of a commentary on the flaws of society while the Daleks are committing a "racial cleansing" (the Doctor's words, not mine), but I'd be remiss to not at least touch on it.
3) Objective Perspective
Rose gives us a very stark show of what bias can do in this episode. She showed sympathy before she knew anything about the Dalek, and while she does become frightened and tries to flee from it, by the end of the episode she's managed to either fight against or accept her fear and continue to try and help the Dalek and show it kindness.
It reminds me a lot of what we see with D'art in ST2, to the point that Rose's experience is almost beat for beat what happens with Dustin:
Finding the demoslug and growing fond of it because he doesn't know what it is.
Becoming frightened when he learns it's a "baby demogorgon" and tries to trap it.
Learning that he can have a connection and cooperate with it even if he's still scared.
Even Will manages to fight against his fear, understanding that D'art is just in a vulnerable position and needs help more than anything.
On top of Rose's demeanor with the Dalek, we also get to study how she reacts to the Doctor as the episode progresses. By and large, she's disgusted with the way the Doctor is behaving, calling him out multiple times and begging him to see the bigger picture. He's hurt, of course, but he can't continue to resort to violence under the guise of being afraid when this Dalek is no longer the same as the Daleks he hates. She doesn't even fully understand that until the very end, and still she can see that it's changing and it's been deserving of compassion this whole time.
The Doctor and the Dalek both hate each other and hate themselves, and Rose is the only one who can cut in, generally understanding both sides of the argument, to get everyone to back down. She's viewed both the Doctor and the Dalek with a clean, unbiased lens, which allows her to take in all the information she's given without any sort of judgement clouding her decisions.
Sure, her fear does take over a few times, but it's almost exclusively when her life is in immediate danger and she never takes it out directly on the Dalek. As soon as the Dalek refuses to kill her, she can wrangle herself into at least trying to approach things calmly and objectively and attempt to talk the Dalek down rather than resorting to brute force.
It makes me wonder just how, exactly, this is going to go down for Vecna. We've been given a lot of information thus far, but everyone has a different set of pieces without a way to combine them correctly just yet, and there's so many personal stakes involved that it becomes hard to parse out what's really an objective reading.
Will has been personally affected by the UD and the MF, which also affected his immediate family and friends.
El lived in the lab for her whole life and knew Henry personally, and potentially was the catalyst for finally creating Vecna.
Brenner has a desire to make himself look good as he works for his own selfish gains, and puts others in harm's way to get there.
Multiple people have had their lives directly altered by something Vecna did.
Vecna himself has a mess of wrongs against him that he's desperate to "fix."
etc. etc...
It's really just a whole big mess, and it's going to take a lot of work for someone to break out of the personal feelings involved in order to get everyone on all sides to step back and do some self-reflecting.
It's interesting to me that "Dalek" is not only a lesson in sympathy for others, but a lesson in sympathy for oneself. It's a large part of the Doctor's arc in this first season, and sympathy in general has been a huge part of ST throughout the whole show (which I know I've talked about endlessly irt these comparisons to DW), and it's a sentiment becoming increasingly pushed on our "villain" characters.
Like how the Doctor is "brought down" to the Dalek's level of cruelty and the Dalek is "brought up" to the Doctor's level of deserving sympathy, our "villain" characters in ST are being brought up to the protagonists' level of deserving sympathy, and our protagonists...? Well, we've already been blessed with loads of imperfect "good" characters in this show thus far, so I will not be surprised when that gets taken to the extreme.
It's already in line with El's monster vs superhero internal debate: a good character can do something morally reprehensible, with or without "proper" motive, and they will still be deserving of compassion.
In conclusion, while obviously I don't think it'll be a one-to-one, I do think that this DW episode offers an interesting route for Vecna's arc to take, specifically in regard to his demise. While a character such as Henry or Edward, who were dragged into this situation against their will, might be deserving of forgiveness/clearing their names and may still be able to be "saved," in whatever form that may be, someone like Vecna might simply be too far gone. There's no going back at this point, and it just has to be accepted.
I was talking to James about this, and I agree when he said it wouldn't be surprising if Vecna was offered help, he earnestly thanked them for it, but then had to refuse it anyway. I wouldn't be shocked if El wants to help him so badly but ultimately has to accept that sometimes things can't be undone, and they simply have to run their course, even if it has an unsatisfactory outcome. Especially if that outcome was one that could have been avoided had they gotten to the problem sooner. That is the tragedy.
The Dalek is a bit more complicated than that, obviously, given what it is as a species and its refusal for help being because it sees no point in existing now that it's "contaminated," but I think you can pick up what I'm putting down. The Dalek could have accepted the help and could have striven to change like Rose thought it could, but it simply wasn't in the cards and would have caused more pain than not.
The Daleks come up again in future episodes, which I might talk about someday, but I felt like this one was a good exploration of what you can do with an established villain and flip the narrative until they're almost entirely sympathetic while our "good guy" seems ridiculous for behaving the way he does. It is not a stretch to apply that sentiment to ST, especially because we have even more of a foundation for compassion toward our "villains" in that show than the Dalek got in this episode.
I could talk a lot more about this episode, too. There's so many trains of thought that this inspired, but, again, I want to just talk about this topic for now, so all the weird "why is this so ST" bits can stay in the vault (or you can go watch the episode yourself, which I highly recommend! It's a good one).
Overall, just knowing that DW was some level of inspiration for ST makes me excited to see what the Duffers took from that classic series and how they'll use it to inform their own final season, and specifically how they'll further the "no one is special/better/worse" message they have going on. We'll see!
