I feel like bringing Uhura into the conversation around 1115 undermines the argument as it derails it from the discussion about Sulu. It may seem like an equivalent as Uhura is black and Sulu is Asian but it's not.

Uhura's hate from some Spirk fans doesn't necessarily come from her being black but rather her being a her. We know this because SNW Spirk fans were treating Christine the same ways AOS Uhura was treated and both of them are treated the same way T'Pring has been treated since the 60s. Yes race may play a factor to the severity or types of attacks being made but that isn't the reason the attacks exist. Any female dating Spock will be treated with disdain by those who believe him to be gay. Uhura isn't special in this treatment which means the main motivation isn't race.

I don't think race is the leading motivation for the supposed anti Sulu campaign Spirk shippers apparently launched either but I also don't have a clue what OP is talking about as I, a Spirk shipper in the fandom at the time, never saw anything about Sulu being gay in a negative light outside of Takei's one interview and one thing is for sure in this fandom: Spirk shippers are never quiet about not liking things.

Without an example of what was said OPs experiences are OPs experiences and I can't prove if what they are talking about is actually racist attacks against Sulu or not because I never experienced it.

I will say that based on how the Spirk fandom behaves in general, the most likely case is racist statements were being made by a small group of Spirk shippers OP came across who never made it mainstream but were loud in their own echo chamber and therefore saying Spirk shippers in general as a whole did this is an exaggeration.

Also people not seeing Spock as white because he's Vulcan is stupid, but people not seeing Spock as white because Nimoy was Jewish which is a minority white or not, is an established discrimination Jews face in white centric countries. So keep in mind when talking about Spock's supposed whiteness that white people might not be operating under the idea that Spock, or Kirk for that matter as Shatner is also Jewish, are white at all and if your friends are saying they don't see Spock as white...they might have other reasons for saying so that they either don't register they have or don't want to admit to.

And just to round out my thoughts on this conversation, this happened 8 years ago, and I think the fact that people have to pull fandom receipts from nearly or even over a decade ago to be mad at Spirk shippers about says a lot.

i think that Christine becoming a Doctor of Medicine makes even more sense in SNW since SNW seems to be pushing this career path for her by making her main area of passion be Medical Research.

it's apparently a hot take tho bc i got blocked for simply bringing up the fact that christine becomes a doctor and that i personally love that for her... i do not understand how could it have been such a deal breaker? the very last thing i'm trying to do is start a dumb drama but i do need to say that while i understand how Star Trek's portrayal of nurses was sexist and why some might prefer Christine to remain a nurse (which is valid), i think that being aggressively against her becoming a doctor is a bit sexist as well.

Despite being among humans for close to a decade, I still find their tendency to overcomplicate and avoid aspects of social situations to be confusing at best and infuriating at worst. So much time is wasted on tedious matters such as who gets to 'make the first move' or 'not come off too strong'.

For example, everyone aboard my vessel is keenly aware of Lt. Uhura and Engineer Scott's 'budding romance'. But their need to extend their oddly avoidant courtship ritual, rather than outright state their interest in one another, is pointless, as well as frustrating to witness.

Why do they do this? Why not 'get it over with', as they say?
