Admit it, Spock. For people like us, the journey itself… is home.

My interpretation of Unification is that when Kirk died, because he and Spock are literally one soul/Katra in two bodies, he can’t pass on without his other half.
So he’s being sent to fetch the missing piece of himself-but he doesn’t know right away that the missing piece is Spock. Just that there’s something missing he has to find first. That’s why we get that scene with the three different versions of himself. He doesn’t know quite what he’s looking for yet, so he’s first looking inward.
And yes, obviously it’s TOS Kirk and Movie Kirk because those are the Iconic Looks for the character, but also, within the story itself? I think he’s specifically seeing the two times in his life he lost Spock-right at the end of their first five year mission when Spock resigned, and then after Spock died in TWOK. Those are the two times in his life he had felt like a piece of himself went missing, and when he realizes that, Kirk immediately understands what he’s meant to do.
His missing piece is Spock.

I've always known... I'll die alone but that doesn't mean I wanted you to die alone. Last time you died I couldn't touch you, couldn't hold you close, couldn't give you my strength as yours ebbed slowly away.
Tumblr media
I stole you from death because you already spent too many years alone - you should not be alone in death.
Tumblr media
They say when we die our life flashes before our eyes, and when I met my own death it was proven true. I saw my life before - all the years we spent together. From a brash young adventurer clothed in gold, to a wiser, more experienced leader clothed in red - you took that journey with me.
Tumblr media
And then I saw past my end all the way to yours and all I could whisper was "Oh my" because this time it will be different. I will make sure it's different.
Tumblr media
This time... you won't die alone.
Tumblr media
This time... I won't let you
Tumblr media
This time... we will be together
Tumblr media
This time... I will take your hand and hold you close
Tumblr media
This time... I will get it right

spirk didn't just now become canon- it's been canon. the difference is that now it's 2024 and the culture has evolved enough to stop pretending that kirk and spock haven't always been in love, clear as day.

After months of work, reading the delightful fic from @iwillstaywiththemforever, and thanks to the Mcspirk Bigbang from @mcspirkevents: here is this wonderful sfw piece! It's not often I have the time to draw a background, but for a library I'll do it with pleasure <3
Go read the fic y'all cause it's SO SWEET!

"If Genesis is life from lifelessness, I must come to this place again"
765874 Unification recontextualizes this line in a really beautifully brilliant way.
In The Wrath of Khan, when he finds himself looking to a future without Spock at his side he feels young; because the number of years he will have to live without Spock far outweigh the number of years he had with Spock. And he is saying he must come to This Place (Genesis) again so that he may be rejuvenated, and so that he may never forget that no matter how many years he carries on his shoulders, the Best Him - the Him that exists with Spock at his side - will never grow older. No matter how old, how infirm, how decrepit, how close to lifelessness he becomes - the Him that is full of youth and vitality will always exist in This Place (Genesis), because that was the last place he was truly whole.
But Spock's story didn't end there, and Kirk wrested him from death - turning his poetic statement literal. It was life from lifelessness - it brought Spock back from the dead - so he came to This Place (Genesis) again.
But then in Unification, the line means something different. Something more. Unification adds layers to an already beautiful line.
If Genesis is life from lifelessness - if Spock is restored to me - then I must come to This Place (the death of Spock) again. Because inevitably, the death of Spock still exists somewhere in the future. Inevitably, Kirk must face that again. Inevitably, he must return to that.
And this time he does not fight death. This time he does not wrest Spock from death so that he may keep him at his side. This time is gentler, because this time Spock is ready. Because this time, he is ready to close the book on the final chapter. This time his story is truly at an end. This time, he does not need to be wrested from death, but rather needs to be accompanied on his final journey.
I must return to This Place. I must return to the death of Spock. I must face death.
And this time... this time it's okay.
