The only WIP I’m really actively working on right now is Hiding Out in the Open.

2. 🍄Describe your WIP/one of your WIP(s) in the format of “___ + ___ =___”

Psychology Podcast Hidden Brain + AU where Simon and Baz never got together but Simon still lost his magic and got spelled by Smith = Non-linear AWTWB-era Baz negging Simon with podcast links but actually secretly being sweet the whole time until they’re having real conversations and like, excavating some trauma until Simon figures himself out (or does he?) (He does, I’m not a monster.)

(I needed more terms for this equation, a few higher powers maybe.)

3. 🌍What tags or warnings will one of your WIP(s) need if you intend to share it?

Well, so far I’ve warned for anxiety/panic attacks, implied/referenced child abuse, mentions of cannibalism, mentions of eating bugs, AND mentions of animal cruelty. SOUNDS FUN RIGHT?

4. 🧭An alternative title to one of your WIP(s)?

So this fic is titled after a Feist song. The alternate title was a combination of a Ron Sexmith song that Feist did a great cover of and the name of the fictional podcast in my story:

Oh, it’ll be this one for sure! I have nothing else even approaching any kind of written state.

Well, it’s just titled after the fic. But before I had a title and was just dreaming things up, I had a doc titled “Hidden Brainstorms”. There’s also a doc in the folder for this titled “Enemies Closer” that’s filled with research I did for an episode I have to invent…

“You stood him up? What the hell Basil? I cancelled my plans for this.”

8. ♻️A scrapped idea for your current WIP.

Okay so I am an idea hoarder, I rarely fully scrap an idea until I’m done writing a story, I just park them all in a dumping ground at the end of my doc for ongoing review. But one for sure scrapped idea I had for this back in the start was that Shep would co-host a podcast at some point in this story.

9. 🤔What’s a story you’d love to write but haven’t even started yet?

Welllllllll, I may have an entire (shared) Trello board for a fic that @artsyunderstudy and I have been excitedly talking about co-writing. I won't say much but it’s a Canonverse AU, featuring older strangers-to-lovers Snowbaz, and it’s a ghost story. Your basic SPOOKY SEXY SAD CATHARSIS type of deal.

Actively? One. Two if you count the Trello board which I periodically add ideas to. Three if you count the Wedding fic draft I have 20K written for and could start writing on again at ANY MOMENT.

Well, I’m about to be struggling with writing the scene where Baz listens to the podcast episode I have to completely invent. I have a full first rough pass at this chapter done, except that part where I just copy pasted a bunch of research notes to come back to…

Ok rambling time: Recently I was really craving some Snowbaz kissing, and guess what - there's a fic that's like 90% JUST kissing. So the good news was, I could have all the kissing I wanted! So many kisses! Too bad it's unfinished.

And then I had a moment like that meme: "man this fic is really great! I wish I could find out how it ends!" *realizes you're the author*

ANYWAY rambling over. That's all just to say: I'm going to finish every little helps. Like I'm this close 🤏 to being done after over a YEAR writing this thing. I just need to wrap up the last chapter and write a neat little bow of an epilogue and then boom, done.

Here's a bit from chapter 8 (coming to an ao3 near you as soon as I'm done beating it out of my head):

He snorts against my skin, a little laugh among the breathy kisses. “Think I'm a bit like a vampire, now."  I just hum. I really hoped he wouldn't try to open that can of worms right now. It's bad enough that I had to take him down to the Catacombs with me. At least he stopped kissing me long enough so I could drink blood.  (He did help me catch a few rats—stepped on one, then offered it up to me like a single-stemmed rose. Absolutely ridiculous.) (I was swooning.) “How so?" I ask. “I mean, like, the hunger."  “Your hunger makes you long to drink the blood of small mammals?" I frown. “Wait. Do you want to drink my blood?"  "You smell so good," he whispers against my jaw. "Wanna eat you."  "I've already said I don't eat the rats."  "Said I wanna eat you."  I tsk at him. “Cannibalism isn't sexy, Snow."

Alright, this post is long enough. Idk if anyone even remembers this fic, but in case you still care, the end is near, friends.

Age gap: -2

Not into it at all for younger characters, but I don't mind for older ones. I haven't read a lot of couples with bigger age gaps but I wouldn't rule out enjoying it in the right context--though I can't see being into it for the sake of the trope itself. (I love you for you, Malcolm Grimm.) Codependency: Interdependency: +7

The template asks about codependency but I finally looked up what codependency means and it's about an uneven relationship where a partner, friend, or family member subsumes their own needs in the course of accommodating / enabling another person's destructive behavior. Is that anyone's jam? There's a reason Rainbow skipped the 12 months between the CO epilogue and the start of WS...

But if we're talking interdependency, then I'm super into it. Octavia Butler was right: "dependency is sexy if it's chosen and not coercive. Symbiosis is a kind of dependency. A dependency of equals is best." Snowbaz symbolizes this with the whole hot/cold body temp thing, which is #sharingabedgoals, and there's lots of great fic in this fandom exploring it, my all-time fave being @fatalfangirl's stunning Bound and Determined.

Obsession/Possessiveness, jealousy: +2

Obsession, sure, sign me up. What is Simon at all those football practices if not obsession?

And I can get behind jealousy as a device for revealing the depth of otherwise hidden or even denied feelings. But active, power-and-control-wheel possessiveness? Gross.

Opposites (grumpy/sunshine etc): +5

Yeah! I love watching the grump's walls come down. But with the caveat that the sunshine can't be a one-dimensional, manic pixie dream character, because the that's just boring and I don't care about them.

Enemies to lovers, Enemies with benefits: +5

What snowbaz fan isn't into this? But a key element for me is that there has to be some reason behind the initial enemies dynamic besides one or both of them just being an asshole. Maybe they think that's what's up at first and then learn otherwise, but if their enemy status is based on something real, like they genuinely hate each other based on accurate knowledge about each other, I find it implausible and probably also difficult to like one or both of them.

That's part of why Snowbaz works for me: Baz and Simon's enemy status was imposed on them by a fucked up political system and abusive caretakers. Left to their own devices they'd probably never have been enemies. The reason for their animosity is not the core of who they are.

Friends with benefits: +2

Ehhh is it benefits to full on love? I don't really connect with allo perspectives on sexual relationships, like I get them intellectually but I don't jive with them on an emotional level, so there has to be that emotional draw for me, that underlying romance. I mean tho, @fatalfangirl stacy is writing an excellent fic on this premise right now that I absolutely love because there are clearly feelings involved. But it also might fall more into the realm of the next trope on this list ... which is ...

What Ashton said 😂 also props to fandom for teaching me that I am demisexual, and that this is not a default mode of existence.

Sex to feelings: +100000000

It's the fucking BEST. You get to read all the smut and then the climax ISN'T "and then we did it," it's "and then we were emotionally intimate." You get to be horny and a sap.

I also think this trope inherently pushes writers' creativity because the relationship's progression can't follow standard mainstream romance beats. And the sex scenes usually have narrative significance by showing how the relationship is changing, which produces great writing.

Fake dating/relationship: +5

Yes, especially if there's lots of pining along the way! @captain-aralias's Unintended is a great example.

Friends to lovers: +3

I wouldn't say I seek this out specifically but there are so many great fics with this tag. Here are a few (but not all) of my favorites: I'd Gladly Eat You for Breakfast by @whogaveyoupermission What Remains After the Storm by @hushed-chorus Sixty Seconds by @artsyunderstudy Petrichor by @martsonmars And again Unintended by @captain-aralias

Found Family: +1

It's fine? I love moving proofs of love and affection outside of romance, but whether it's in something that fits the label "found family" or not is important to me.

Hurt/Comfort: +10

PUT IT DIRECTLY. INTO MY MOUTH. I am a fucking sap for hurt/comfort. It gives me the swoops. There is fucking nothing I like better than lovers (or almost lovers) comforting each other and taking care of each other, emotionally, physically, spiritually, whatever. It's sexy to me. It affects me deeply.

#WhatAshtonSaid. I literally have a WIP going where someone says "who did this to you??" just because I love it so much. I'm pretty sure Nightmares and Excuses was the first fic that made me cry. (It's not hard to do.)

Love Triangle: -8

Not my thing if there's genuine heartbreak / unrequited love floating around. That just bums me out. I get a kick out of the Agatha-Simon-Baz's confusion in CO, but only Penny thinks that's actually a love triangle. I think the only book I've ever loved with a "real" love triangle is Emma and even [SPOILER FOR 208-YEAR-OLD-BOOK] Harriet's not actually in love with Mr. Knightley, she just thinks she is.

Poly, open relationships: -4

Only if it's porn without plot and even then it's pretty rare that I'm into it. I'm not usually interested in sex scenes without a romantic/love element (even if that element is deeply repressed) and am personally very monogamous and have a hard time connecting with poly relationship themes. Which obviously does not mean that poly =/= emotional or romantic connection, not at all, it's just a tough one to wrap my head around.

@skee3000 nailed this for me in Minos, by having Simon and Baz connect with each other even as they have three-way with Mr. Minos, but now I'm conflating a threesome with poly/open relationships. Go read it anyway.

Mistaken/hidden identity: +2

Not sure I can think of a Snowbaz fic that focuses on this, although I'm sure there are some. I do like it when characters meet for the first time and are drawn to each other, only to learn that each other's larger identities make that complicated. And the trust issues that brings up. There are a couple of KJ Charles novels that deal with this really beautifully.

Monsterfucking: +5

I really love when monsterfucking is used as a way to celebrate difference and work through a character's feelings about their own body or its changes. This fandom does a great job with that. Otherwise I'm not drawn to any particular monsters for their monstery sake (but see: Minos's horns).

Pregnancy: -2

+8 for mpreg, -10 for other pregnancy.

I stalled out for two weeks on this post, wondering how to explain this without getting darker and more personal than I'd like. And then realized I don't have to explain 😃.

Second Chance: +7

Love it! I don't always have the heart to read the actual breakup, or falling out, or lost opportunity etc., but I love fics where that has already happened and we're seeing them put themselves back together. Some examples, that may or may not have this tag but definitely have this theme:

What's Left by @cutestkilla This Will All Go Down in Flames by @facewithoutheart There's Be Peace When You Are Done by somekindofpath Once More, with Feeling by fox_pitch

And probably countless others I'm forgetting.

Slowburn: +10

Yeah! I know I said I love sex before feelings but I love this too. (And I think they can be successfully combined into slow-feelings-burn.) There's nothing like a satisfying, well-earned payoff. I also admire well-executed slowburns because whenever I write a get-together fic I have to actively resist mashing their faces together in the first 100 words.

Soulmates: -1

In theory I don't love these. The red string, etc. It can just feel played out, and also the emotional logic of it is kind of alienating. I have a hard time putting my head into a world where people have these predestined connections and are trying to find each other because it's just so not how I see relationships. BUT when an author critically and playfully messes with the trope, it can be lots of fun. All This Soulmate Shit by half_witch mashes up a dozen different soulmate tropes to make something that's brilliant, funny, sexy, and feels like they are actively choosing each other rather than obeying destiny. I also adore Bound and Determined by @fatalfangirl for how it plays with the idea of free will and consent, which feel like soulmate-related theme. But it's probably not a coincidence that this fic doesn't have the "soulmates" tag.

That's a lot of me me me and what I think. What do YOU think, friends?

First off, Gareth Fucks Fest! This wasn’t a real fest, but rather a shared effort to make Gareth sexy. You may never look at the man the same way again.

Simon and Baz are friends and roommates in this normal AU, in which Simon finds out that Baz is a virgin and offers to help out his friend by recommending he seek out the services of a professional, The Cherry Plucker, to make his first time special. When Baz asks Simon to come for moral support, Simon’s feelings toward his friend begin to change when he watches someone else touching Baz. What will he do when he’s invited to join in? Come for sexy Gareth and the threesome tag and stay for the tender Snowbaz sweetness with the eventual get together. Bonus points for completely changing the way I see abs tapered to that V-shape.

If you loved the above fic, might I suggest you dive deeper into Gareth’s backstory and see where his future leads? Have you ever wanted to read about you and Gareth meeting at a wedding? Don’t let the Gareth/Reader tag convince you this story is crack. This story is painfully earnest and made me want to read a hundred more fics with this version of Gareth. Trust me, it’s a good one.

Gareth Fucks WIP, currently 3.2k, rated M by @ileadacharmedlife

Another friends to lovers, Normal AU with Baz seeking out Gareth’s services. The premise sounds the same but these authors both approached this storyline very differently. In this one, Baz is a bit of a loner who gets taken in by Simon and his friend group. I love an awkward Baz, totally enamored by a popular, magnetic Simon. The first chapter was so fun and I can’t wait to see where this story goes.

Someone Wicked WIP, currently 8.8k, rated E by @artsyunderstudy

Sex worker Simon meets virginal, repressed Baz (good lord, the unintentional theme in this list 😆). There are 2 chapters so far, one from each of the boys’ POV. This fic is sexy but so fucking tender (just how I like my smut) and sets up a compelling mix with Demi!Simon and an angsty, Baz in crisis, meeting this ray of sunshine at just the right time. Plus, we are absolutely spoiled with gorgeous art in both chapters. I’m very, very into this fic and can’t wait to see where it’s going.

I’d Gladly Eat You for Breakfast, WIP, currently 4.2k, rated M by @whogaveyoupermission

Another friends to lovers Normal AU. Here we have writer!Simon telling his roommate Baz he had a strange sex dream about him the night before. When Baz asks Simon to demonstrate, we see the careful boundaries these two have put around them to keep their mutual attraction at bay quickly crumble. This fic is so sexy, and uses some great food metaphors to sate your hunger. Truly delicious.

Is This the Real Life? Complete, 5.6k, rated T by @captain-aralias

Watford era, canon divergent story in which Baz walks in on Simon practicing to ask Agatha out, he says yes before realizing what really happened, then pretends he was being sarcastic. The boys immediately leave for spring break, and both wonder whether they legit have a boyfriend. This fic takes place mostly while they are apart, trying to figure out what it all means, but man, their tender emotions and blooming self-realizations are so good.

Anyone else have any great recs? I love hearing what people are reading!

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I do! It’s just lovely to chat a bit with people, and I also want them to know I appreciate their comments. Sometimes it’s a little while before I respond but I always do.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I’m a happy ending person, or at least hopeful ending. That being said, The Danse Macabre ends on a glum note.

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

That’s a tough one (see above), but probably What Remains After The Storm.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not these days, but I got a couple as a teen. The silliest was someone angry that my fic was a canon divergence–nothing more, nothing less. It was silly.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Sometimes. I struggle with smut. If sex seems right for the story/plot, then I’ll add it, but I don’t tend to write it for its own sake.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

No, the closest I’ve come is an idea for an AU, but even then I’ll probably strip out all the characters from that setting

Yes! Currently co-writing For All Intents and Purposes with @erzbethluna. It's been such a blast! I'm hoping to get back into writing soon

I had an idea for a Piranesi-inspired fic. Wrote a bit of it by hand almost a year ago. I’d like to keep working on it, but realistically I don’t think it will happen.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Plots, maybe? I like writing little twists and reveals.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Smut or otherwise physically intimate scenes. 

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Personally I don’t like it. If I can understand the meaning contextually, then that’s great. If I don’t need to know the meaning, also, great. But if that text is relevant to the scene in some way, I don’t like it, even if translations are provided at the end. No shade on anyone who does this, but I find it brings me out of a story. Edit: Now remembering I did this in When Pigs Fly, and while it wasn't plot relevant, I understand if anyone thinks me a hypocrit.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Good Omens (I think)

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

That’s a tough one to answer, but I’ll say What Remains After The Storm. There are definitely parts I think, in retrospect, I could have done better, but overall I’m really happy with it. Also, it just combines so many of my loves. The Ocean! Moors! The Fae! Stupid Sexy Mermen!

That being said, Accidents Happen will always have a special place in my heart.

I have 36 in total published, a whole bunch more in drafts!

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

167,076 which is crazy when you consider 146,736 are just from THIS YEAR

3. What fandoms do you write for?

The Sandman, currently! I have a couple of WIPs for other fandoms but I just haven't gotten around to them.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

Dreams for a Dozen Cats - 527 kudos A Dream for a Viscount - 513 kudos and if I get burned, at least we were electrified - 504 kudos Wake Up & Smell The Flowers - 457 kudos Let's conspire to ignite - 397 kudos

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I do! I've been bad about it lately, but I love responding because I absolutely adore the dynamic of being able to communicate with my readers. It's just a tiring exercise and I have to be really in the mood to do it! But I absolutely love and adore every comment I receive 💖💖💖

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

A sweet dream - it's the only one where I've used the tag Main Character Death! The ending is quite hopeful, but the death is in fact permanent, take care if you choose to read it!

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Hnnnnnnngh I have absolutely no fucking idea because they almost all have really happy endings! That's like asking me to pick a favorite child. Honestly though, if you want sappy and sexy romance throughout an entire fic with literally zero conflict, then my happiest ending is probably A Dream for a Viscount. If you want ANGST ANGST ANGST with a massive payoff and a lot of hurt/comfort leading up to a soft ending, my happiest ending is the one in and if I get burned, at least we were electrified

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Not on AO3! In my ff.net days though, whew lordy the salt was strong whenever I wrote somebody's NOTP and dared to publish it. Those were some interesting days.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

Well, seeing as I am a mod for @monsterfucktoberbingo....I think you can probably guess what type of smut I write LMAO. I do write quite a bit of omegaverse too just to spice things up 😄

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I have! Back in my ff.net days, my teenage self LIVED on the high school fandom crossover fic. I shall never return to those days ever again, but I had a good time. I also recently wrote this Dreamling/SnowBaz crossover for my beloved @bazzybelle💖💖💖

Not to my knowledge! I never really participated in fandoms where fic stealing was common thankfully.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I have! I have absolutely no idea what site it ended up on, but I've had my fics translated into Russian and Chinese.

Not in a really long time! When I was a teen, I used to RP characters with my friends as a writing exercise, and then that would turn into a fic! I also absolutely LOVED the round robin fic culture back in the old livejournal days. (can you tell I'm dating myself heavily lmao)

14. What’s your all time favorite ship?

00Q hands down. I'm still reading old favorites to this day. Although, I will admit Dreamling is a pretty damn close second considering *gestures vaguely(

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

Oh lord, I have quite a few, published and unpublished. Most of my published unfinished WIPs are just rotting on ff.net and I've made my peace with them. Unpublished WIPs...I have quite a few SamBucky fics that never made it out of drafts and I'm really sad about that because I really loved that ship at one point :(

16. What are your writing strengths?

I have a few I'm pretty proud of: - Succinctness: I can tell a whole story in under 10k words. One-shots are my bread and butter. - Angst: Do you want to cry? I'll make you cry and wring your soul out with no regrets. - Fluff: On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you want to feel soft and like you're snuggling with a cloud, I can do that for you too. Fluff is such a delight to write, because I like to feel good, and I love making others feel good too 💖 - Dialogue: I love writing dialogue. It's such a delight to try and figure what a character would say when placed in ~situations~

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Whew lordy, here we goooooooooooo: - Longfic/Multichapter fics: I can and have written longer fics, but it's highly demotivating for me. I am struggling so hard to finish my multi-chapter fics right now, it's a nightmare. I'll get there, but... - Descriptions: I AM SO BAD AT MAKING SETTINGS AND DESCRIBING HOW PEOPLE LOOK. I'm sure some people will disagree with me, but I some days I truly hate my inability to describe things the way I want to, or the way I've seen other people be able to. It is a thing I am working on, for sure, I know it's just a matter of practice. - WIP hell: I start and stop things at the drop of a hat. Rest in pieces to all my ideas stuck in partially written states - Plot Summaries: I can write a whole thing and be utterly unable to give you a plot summary. Save me hahahahaha

20. Favorite fic you’ve written?

...heh. I thought this was gonna be harder but it's definitely and if I get burned, at least we were electrified. This fic dragged me out of lurking in fandom to full on writing and participating again. It's my most canon-adjacent fic. It's got angst and action and feelings. It has tentacle sex. It has the Corinthian being indulged within an inch of his life. This fic is a love letter to myself, it the reason I am here, in sandman fandom, writing as much as I am. Is it my best written story out of all my fics? No, it was my first fic after a long writing hiatus and while I consider it a well written piece, I also like to think my writing quality has increased since I first wrote it. But it is my favorite fic, for all the reasons above, and for the sheer joy it brought into my life then, and in the subsequent months after.

More than two words: Post-AWTWB SnowBaz. Simon gets referred to a sex therapist who suggests that instead of jumping into sex with someone else, he should take some time to get intimate with himself. Featuring sexy times and self-worth! There will be wanking! There will be tears! And possibly also mutual masturbation?? (Honestly confused how/why there isn't more mutual masturbation in spicy SnowBaz fic.)

This is based on an exercise in Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski. As soon as I re-read that exercise, I was like, "This would be a GREAT structure for a fic." (Also, if you're like me and enjoy sex, worksheets, and sex worksheets, Nagoski has worksheets from Come As You Are on her website. I brought them once to a party to fill out with friends, because I am a Party Animal).

I have not written an actual single word for this fic and am not sure when I will write it, but I am already pot-committed. Maybe for EGF 2024??

I do not have Six Sentences for you this Sunday, so instead I'm finally doing this trope game that the lovely @artsyunderstudy tagged me in... some time ago. And thank you to @shrekgogurt for tagging me in Six Sentence Sunday this week!

Prior to Carry On, I mostly read Harry Potter fanfiction with a little bit of Percy Jackson and a little bit of Avatar: TLA thrown in there. I was pretty specific about what I liked in my fics in those days (which were primarily 10+ years ago), but the Carry On fandom has absolutely changed me. I'm not yet sure what is Carry On-specific or what applies outside the fandom because I haven't ventured back out again yet. So let's see who I am now...

Rules: How much do these tropes affect your decision to click on a fic?

Would make me hesitate for sure. Depends a lot on the characters. If they're like... under 20, I'm probably not interested. If they're a little older, maybe? Idk, definitely sensitive here, but not quite a hard no.

Obsession/Possessiveness, jealousy: +4

I'm going to quote artsyunderstudy's answer here because she already explained it perfectly,:

Complicated feelings. I'm kinda into it, so it definitely wont put me off, but jealousy as a trope can either be really fun in a story or really toxic. Like, I'm a little obsessed with Simon's jealousy in the series, because its not the kind where he gets mad at Baz, really, or lashes out at him, its very internal and about his own insecurity, but also really indicative of how very attached he is despite his assertions through wayward son that he was going to end things. I love a bit of possessiveness as long as its not the kind that hurts their partner or turns really bad to the point of me disliking the character. So, yeah, in most situations i'm a fan of exploring this, though I can't say I specifically look for it.

Opposites (grumpy/sunshine etc): +7

Yes! I do love a good grumpy/sunshine, black cat/golden retriever combo. Solangelo, anyone?

Enemies to lovers, Enemies with benefits: +10

Boy do I love me an enemies to lovers, and this has always been true (Dramione was my first non-canon ship... followed by Zutara, so. There's a theme here.) That was one of the major selling points of Carry On when my friend told me about it.

And enemies with benefits only if they end up actually having feelings for each other, ya know? If it's like... enemies that evolve to have benefits but never really have the emotional connection, meh. Though I can't say I've really run into that.

Friends with benefits: -2

Aaaand quoting artsyunderstudy here again because she nailed it, which... um... hm. I maybe am questioning certain aspects of my sexuality now... so... anyway......... 👀 Though I changed the rating to -2 because unless there's a tag telling me emotions are involved and important and leading somewhere, it's a turn off.

Ehhh is it benefits to full on love? I don't really connect with allo perspectives on sexual relationships, like I get them intellectually but I don't jive with them on an emotional level, so there has to be that emotional draw for me, that underlying romance. I mean tho, @fatalfangirl stacy is writing an excellent fic on this premise right now that I absolutely love because there are clearly feelings involved. But it also might fall more into the realm of the next trope on this list ... which is ...

Sex to feelings: -5

This one is new with Snowbaz (this was not at all a thing I read in previous fandoms. I was not ready for sexy fics back then.) It's another kind of weird one for me. I feel like it has to be accompanied by something else, but I can't tell you what off the top of my head. Like I don't know what this is missing right now... I think I just want the feelings to be there first? Idk, maybe I'll go read some fics like this and see if I can work out what I'm feeling here.

Actually I'm already having thoughts. I think the context of the sex has to be right. I'm not super into things like hookups because that sounds personally terrifying. Like... character a meets character b at a bar/event/etc and there's physical attraction and that's all they need. Just doesn't jive with me.

The only example I can think of off the top of my head that gets close, though doesn't exactly fit, is @facewithoutheart's "to do, to know, to want" with Gareth the Cherry Plucker. Except for this Sex to Feelings scenario it would need to be Baz falling for Gareth (which... HAH. I... I can't with that image.) But anyway. Context. Baz is going to Gareth for help and would then would develop feelings during/after the fact, and that would be fine. And I guess that's probably still about emotional vulnerability. Also hatefucking. That's fine too? Anyway, I'm losing my train of thought on this one.

Fake dating/relationship: +8

I quite enjoy the fake dating trope, especially when combined with enemies to lovers.

Friends to lovers: +5

Yes! Very cute. But also can have a lot of angst and I am more cautious about reading those and making sure I'm emotionally equipped to handle angst. So yes, but handled carefully.

Found Family: +10

I looooove found family stories! I love seeing people choose to care for each other even though they don't have a traditional familial or romantic bond. This is a big part of what I've loved about all of my favorite YA series. People taking care of and understanding each other in ways their families can't or won't and filling voids... I'm actually getting emotional just thinking about it ok moving on.

Hurt/Comfort: +10

As artsyunderstudy said: "It gives me the swoops." Yes. 100%.

Love Triangle: -10

I'm not sure I ever loved this trope, but I was ok with it. Now I think I am just generally over love triangles. The angst doesn't usually hit right and I end up feeling more annoyed with the character doing the choosing than anything.

Poly, open relationships: -3

I'm pretty sure this is my bias coming through. My introduction to the concept of open relationships was through some people that were... not... great... imo... I recently realized how much that first introduction colored my perspective and I'm trying to undo some of that. In addition, just the idea of my partner also being with other people makes me so incredibly jealous, which I know is also my own issue to work on. So I should probably actually read more fics in this area. Fics often help me work through these kinds of internal issues.

Mistaken/hidden identity: 0

I don't know if I've ever read a fic with this trope? Not feeling any particular way about it either.

Monsterfucking: +8

Oh, this is certainly new with Snowbaz. I remember a time when I was like "wow, no, absolutely not. I do not get it." And then Spadey came along...

Does this apply outside of Snowbaz? TBD. I so far haven't been interested in even Shepard's scandalous stories, so this may be Simon specific.

Pregnancy: -1

I am very confused. This is new with Snowbaz, which on it's own was a "?" moment for me. I was very unsure about mpreg at the start of this journey, but wanted to try it out and very quickly became fine with it. mpreg specifically is probably at a 0, maybe -1.

But pregnancy in general terrifies me. Not in the way where people are like scared of/grossed out by pregnant people. Other people being pregnant is fine. It just sounds so incredibly uncomfortable and painful that I'm like... no thanks? Don't really want to think about it for me. Very excited about it for you, though. But I haven't really read any non-mpreg fics, so I'm not sure where pregnancy as a whole falls... I'm going to go with like -1 because if it's not me it should be fine... maybe...

Second Chance: -9

breakup angst wounds me deep ya'll. I hate thinking of them not together. I hate thinking of them thinking they are better off not together. I hate IT it makes me cry all of my tears.

But where she loves the coming back to each other, I just can't get past the breakup/betrayal/whatever it is that needs a second chance. It hurts too much to even finish.

YES, but in the right mood. Sometimes I just need fluff and falling fast and I need it NOW. But otherwise, yes yes yes.

I feel like I've missed out on this entirely. I can't think of any soulmate fics I've read? Or what qualifies as a soulmate fic as opposed to other fics with magical ties between people. So maybe I have read them? Idk. Sounds nice though.

objection your honour this propaganda is NOT fair representation of snowbaz!! yeah the cover is okay but the CONTENTS of the book are capable of turning a teenage brain inside out (source: it happened to me.) thankfully as tumblr user tyrannuspitch i consider myself qualified to remedy this situation.

the basic concept of carry on is that it starts out as a parody, as the most cliché young adult fantasy book you can imagine, with every melodramatic speech and villainous flourish dialled up to eleven... and then it slowly but surely makes the inevitable gay fanfiction of its central homoerotic rivalry canon. my reaction the first time i read it was literally: "this shouldn't work. this shouldn't be allowed to be good." and yet it IS!

it's a Story About Stories. it's a love letter to the genre and a brutal genre deconstruction at the same time. it's intensely meta and genre-aware, but not in a cynical or undermining way - in an intensely compassionate one. it's both honest and EARNEST, both funny and genuinely heartbreaking, and these things are never in tension with each other - they flow into each other naturally as how people in extraordinarily terrible circumstances cope.

"doomed by the narrative" this, "doomed by the narrative" that, and yet none of you guys seem to care that tyrannus basilton grimm-pitch has been aware that he is the villain(tm) and he's going to have to be murdered so the happily ever after(tm) can happen since he was eleven years old...

it is [ao3 voice] a slowburn enemies-to-lovers arc, and again - it's executed so well. the hero (simon) and the villain (baz) are two young figureheads for opposing factions in their magical society, currently in a kind of cold civil war, always on the verge of tipping over into an actual war. they can't be in the same room starting a fight, and they've tried to kill each other multiple times. and. they're roommates. they are child soldiers on opposite sides of a war, and they had to grow up in the same bedroom. the intimacy! the yearning! the tragedy! you sleep next to this boy every night and you know what his shampoo smells like. and one day he's going to kill you!

THE LOVE TRIANGLE. of course there's a love triangle. but it's an m/m/f love triangle, and at least one of the boys is gay, so how can this be? the answer is that it's an intricate web of closet cases and increasingly desperate attempts at denial. and it's both genuinely interesting and incredibly fun. you've heard of lavender marriages, now get ready for: lavender infidelity!

vampirism as queerness. god, have i really not mentioned the vampires yet? well. of course, we all know that vampires are gay because they're sexy, sinister outsiders - but i think what this book does particularly well is setting up vampires as a legitimately unjustly persecuted group, and fear of vampires as a irrational and deeply damaging stigma. you do have to work for this one a little bit, but it's absolutely in there. simon showing compassion towards baz's internalised vampirephobia is key to the central turning point of the book!

this is a child soldier story. both simon and baz are used as weapons and pawns by their own families from a very young age. that means the story has to hold onto three simultaneous truths: firstly, that sometimes your parent is a terrible person, and you love them anyway. secondly: that even if do you love your parent, sometimes they're such a terrible person that you'll have to kill them if you ever want to escape. thirdly: that violence takes an immense toll on people, especially children, and forcing them to commit it is itself a form of abuse. so, yes, you can kill your abuser and be justified in it. but it's still a tragedy, because you never should have had to.

This took way longer than I expected it to, whoops, but here's my list:

Paperback Writer by BasicBathsheba

It's all too easy to write Simon as all brawn and no brains, someone who solves his problems with his fists and his sword instead of his words (especially since this is how he describes himself! solving problems with his sword or at least his mouth...), so I love this fic for having a very in-character Simon whose smarts really shine through. And I tried to avoid listing two fics by the same writer, but I have to shout out network connectivity problems which I think was the first AU I read where Baz pushes Simon down the stairs - which sounds so silly, but it kind of encapsulates for me the moment where I recognized the way fic can twist canon into something that feels like it's winking just at you.

Behind the Magic by @bookish-bogwitch

It was a struggle choosing just one of Em's fics for this list - I think her writing is hilarious, and I aspire to write anything so funny. The amount of canon callbacks in this fic is incredible, and the appearances from Rainbow herself? Genius.

This is the definitive fem snowbaz fic for me and the reason why I kept Simon's and Baz's names the same in my fem fic. I love the low-stakes enemies-to-lovers arc of this fic, and I ADORE Agatha in it too.

And We Still Do by @facewithoutheart

Likewise it was so, so difficult to choose a Christina fic! I love the creative narrative framing in this one, the characterization of Baz and Simon, the way we get so many brilliant little AUs but it's still canon-compliant. It's incredibly smart, sweet, and so funny. (I also have to shout out vroom vroom and its sequels because I think about them all the time. Way to take a canon detail- Baz's love of cars - and spin it into something so cursed and hilarious yet sweet and in-character.)

tripping over stars by @mooncello

This one is still a WIP but it stands out to me for the stunning way it depicts Simon's anxiety through his physical actions. I think about this fic every time I'm writing a nervous or provoked Simon. Also the little hint of steaminess that we get in the published chapters drives me crazy. Heath's writing is just damn beautiful.

When I set out to write a sexy fem snowbaz fic I didn't realize I was actually going to end up writing a deep dive into female friendship but, ya know, I don't really have any control over my muse. Getting to use fandom as a place to write about something near and dear to my heart, and having other people fully understand what I'm talking about, is such a dream. And I will never get over the thrill of seeing @arthurkko bring my girls to life in such gorgeous illustrations. (This fic is still a wip but I have a couple thousand words written of each of the unpublished chapters...it's just slow going with Life Stuff.)

A post is going around about fics you consider classics in the Snowbaz fandom. I’d like to take it a step further by asking …

What are five fics you consider your inspiration/influences for writing, plus one of your fics which you think best represents what you want to bring to the fandom?

5. Hang the Moon by @captain-aralias

@captain-aralias is, to me, the snowbaz fandom fic writer of our time. Her commitment to detail, to nailing Rainbow’s voice, while infusing every fic with a heart and purpose that will leave you changed. Every fic of hers is chef’s-kiss-perfection but I’m highlighting Hang the Moon specifically as a fic I often think about (Baz, wet tennis clothes, helping Simon fight the merwolves), and a fic that was my introduction to what fanfics could be/do. I think I finished this fic and just stared at the wall for an hour because I was just like, oh. Oh.

4. The Pitch by basic-bathsheba

Local Hero is one of my favorite fanfics but I wanted to highlight this fic because it’s just such a powerful and understated story. It’s love in the details. This Simon is the model for all of my Simon’s, just a complete simp for Baz haha but also a man who is comfortable and confident being the man who loves Baz even if he doesn’t get to claim it publicly.

3. Stay Up With Me by @sharkmartini

Not sure what to say about this that hasn’t been said a million times. It’ll break your heart; it’ll put you back together. The concept is brilliant and the exploration of two Simon’s will definitely put your emotions through a wringer. Time travel/what-if fics will always grab my attention but this one in particular makes the same case Rainbow posed in Carry On: what if the villain isn’t the villain? And takes it a step further, because Simon realizes he could be the villain, too. Absolutely beautiful.

2. Can’t Find My Way Home by @carryonsimoncarryonbaz

This is one of those fics that just has so much heart and sweetness. I love a good second chance AU, and this one has such Hallmark vibes in the best way. I just love the slow burn of it, and the amazing ending. A perfect holiday fic to snuggle up with. Reading this feels like being cozy up by the fire with someone you love. Actually writing this makes me wanna reread this so much; now that I live with actual Fall I wanna feel cozy like this again.

1. Basil Pitch’s Diary by @bookish-bogwitch

I know it’s a bit weird to rec a WIP as an influence, especially one that’s being written as we speak, but working with/beta-ing Em’s works have made me a sharper, smarter writer. I know this fic is a classic in the works and it’s something I think about on a weekly basis. The Baz Em gives us, to me, feels like canon Baz taken to the next level. What if Baz was the villain … but only to himself? Em’s writing really is just economical in the best way; every line hits, every paragraph teaches me something. And then the heart. It’s genuinely so hard to do what she does and I’m so lucky to get to see her work in realtime.

+1 This Will All Go Down In Flames

I think, at the end of my fandom career, I want this to be the snowbaz fic people associate with me (Spadey being a close second hahaha). But I do feel like it’s got a lot of fandom in-jokes, humor, and sweetness, plus the fun high-stakes of them being in the spotlight. I got to celebrate the Austin I love and miss, as well as poke fun at my own hipster upbringing. I put a lot of Me™ in this fic and it always feels so lovely when people like it. Besides, I got to work with the amazing @tea-brigade and their art just takes this fic to the next level. A dream collab.

"These boxer briefs are 1000 count thread," he muttered just in case Simon was interested.

Simon snickered against the warming skin and dipped his tongue under the waistband. "I didn't know that anyone would think to count the threads on their underwear."

Baz snorted in surprise. "That's not what that...it doesn't matter." He didn't exactly want to derail their current activity with a discussion on the definition of thread count.

Snowbaz!

I bought Simon Snow Trilogy by Rainbow Rowell like two weeks ago and devoured them in less than a week. I can't explain how refreshing it was for me, I felt ridiculously identified with Simon (especially in the last two books) and I swear I love Baz as much as he does. 

I suck when it comes to recommending anything, but if you want fantasy, enemies to lovers, a story after “the happy ending”, a sexy queer vampire and serotonin... this is the right place.

I honestly feel a bit empty at the moment, I just haven't had enough of those two... so I'll probably dive into AO3 and spend some time drawing Simon and Baz (this is just one of the 3 drawings I started of them, lol).

So yeah, I unlocked a new obsession.

just realised this has three authors! really brilliant fic, fangirl-era - but super worth reading, as long as you're ok with simon being smart, and also knowing he's into boys before he kisses baz. (why wouldn't you be?). this is all about simon and baz pranking each other/being generally awful, until they aren't - you see their relationship changing and simon gradually realising what he feels about baz, then there's a telepathy scene! this was recced recently in the discord* so probably lots of people have now read it, but it's seriously good!

magickal mishap, simon turns everything to gold by mistake! this author (also responsible for the fic where simon turns into a frog) is really good at making the silliest things sexy, and sexy things silly - which is a good thing.

Six-Sentence Sunday

Oh hello! Had to drag myself back out of bed when I realized I had not been consistent with posting today! 😭 so tired.

In trying to decide which bit to share from my WIP'S I realized it all came down to which flavor of SnowBaz depression I felt like posting. 😬🤪 WOMP.

HOWEVER, I am planning to finish my unpublished EGF fic (I had worked on 2 last EGF, only published 1) and get it posted this upcoming EGF! and this one *tada* does not really, so much, explicitly deal with depression...there are intense feelings, deep emotions that do deal with their traumas but it's all working through it together in the moment...in an EGF context. 👀

Anyway, I'm getting wordy. The point is...I may actually finish this fic bc there is a DEADLINE. While the other fics can continue to languish indefinitely. 🙄

TW: Baz and Simon have been playing with a bit of a back-and-forth power/control D/s dynamic over the course of this fic. This section only mentions the word control. Although they are in the midst of sexy times, It is not an explicit passage. Baz sort of caught up in the moment of intensity says some true things. This deals more with emotions and working through trauma/processing and how that affects each of them and their relationship sexually and emotionally.
