I used the prompt eldritch for this one but I think this drake veers slightly more whimsical, "high fantasy" vs eldritch. I’ll probably circle back and revisit this design at some point but figured I’d post this one anyway

Smaugust Day 1 - Baby
The newborn shimmerwing looks at her handler with mistrust, as a world is very dangerous when you're the size of a small dog. In a year, she'll be one of the most beautiful animals to fly the skies of Tyria.
I've spent whole day on this, but it still looks a sketch. Absolutely suffering

Collection of the art I did for Smaugust 2023! A Dragon, Wyvern, Amphiptere, and Lindwyrm
I've never done the Smaugust Art Challenge before, and I had a lot of fun with it! I know there's prompt lists floating around for it, but I like the freedom of just having an excuse to focus on drawing dragons for a month as a challenge, without having to follow specific prompts.
Monster/creature art isn't something I do very often now, so it was a nice change of pace. In middle school pretty much all I drew was dragons so it's nice to be a little self indulgent and go back to that hahaha

The Red Winged Whip is small, nocturnal drake found throughout temperate forests. Spending most of the day hidden within the canopies or caves very few will actually interact with this dragon. Primarily an insectivore the Red Winged Whip hunts the skies for flying insects but they have been known to also feed on small rodents. Especially during mating season.
Their name sake derives from the male’s impressive finger appendage that grow from their digitus anularis. The long growths are used in courting displays. Another display shared by both males and females is the false, bioluminescent eye spot. Due to their small stature the Red Winged Whip is regularly preyed upon, but these glowing eyes act as a great deterrent, scaring would be predators.

Lovely and Terrible Creatures: A Collection of Dragon Poetry
For the truly daring out there, venture into the world of the loveliest and most terrible creatures: dragons. Written a poem a day throughout the month of dragons (Smaugust, also known as August), this collection of thirty-one poems explores the beauty, humor, terror, and tragedy of these great beasts of legend.
It's that time of year again: SMAUGUST!!! So I figured I'd share the collection that I posted last year! :D You can still find the poems floating around my social media, but I did polish them up and added an extra one for 31 poems total if you want to buy the ebook on ko-fi for just the basic $3! (Which would be super helpful considering things are particularly rough atm, but it's fine if not!) Thank you so much to anyone that considers reading and sharing; this was such a passion project of mine <3

Smaugust Day 1 - Baby
A hatchling Crown of Thorns wyvern. Even as a baby, the prominent crest of bone that makes up the "crown" most wyverns are best known for is still visible. They are miniscule, about 30 cm in length at birth. The adults, which can average about 6 m in length, are known to be caring parents that will rear their young to an adolescent stage, taking shifts in watching the nest and hunting small game to bring back for the family's sustenance.
The peculiar eyes on this genus set it apart from the rest of the horned wyverns. Similar to the modern cuttlefish, the pupils are shaped in such a way that allows them to balance drastically different light levels without being overexposed to either level of brightness. This serves the wyvern well in its natural habitat of south polar regions, where it is subjugated to intense, permanent sunlight for half of the year and near-pitch black darkness for the other half.
This prompt is using @corromon 's list! Go check it out!

Smaugust continued - 23 - marble
A dragon made out of living marble that polishes it's scales with it's water breath. I imagined it's body growing like calcium building up and it has to continuously carve itself back into the right shape. Went back and forth a lot on how dark to make that marble line pattern.
