Ok this is probably gonna be controversial

Even though I generally don't mind the fanon marauders (i couldn't hate them more but also idc, let ppl hv fun), i think it's a very interesting phenomenon. Don't get me wrong, i definitely don't conflate what ppl enjoy in fiction with real life, but imo it's rather interesting to see how our values and worldview influences the literature we produce and consume (otherwise it wouldn't be necessary to completely change the marauders' personalities in the first place)

Generally, i think it's just that ppl want to impose current day values and trends on the characters they grew up with and thus have a great degree of nostalgia for, seems lyk a perfect mix. And most ppl probably don't want deep, complex and heart breaking stuff in something they view as recreation. And that unconventional ships are fun in general. The entire thing is just silly fun

But also, i think the specific characterization of the marauders as one dimensional social justice warriors who are completely correct all the time(to the point where they're justified in every wrong thing they do in the name of defending rights or sm shit) comes from the fact that a lot of ppl like to think of themselves in this way as well. There's no place for growth, correction or nuance, there's just good vs evil and right vs wrong. In the sense that they're the knights in shining armour and the rest of the world is purely evil. And this is just my opinion, but i think being an sjw is more of a cool fad now than anything else (particularly in the West). The purpose of what ur fighting for comes second to feeling good about yourself and having a superiority complex that comes with believing that ur completely, totally right with everything u say and do. The truth is, despite the fact that it's good to feel this way, i think literally no one is lyk this, no matter how accepting and empathetic they believe themselves to be. A lot of it is constantly questioning if ur doing the right thing and constantly critically analysing ur views and positions by trying ur best to see things from every perspective (or at least thts the way I see it). Everyone always has something they need to change. My point is, i think ppl hv a hard time accepting that those fighting for noble causes can still be wrong about other things and can still believe in the backward thinking of their time without being revolutionaries(a simple glance at history would have made this obvious but nvm) It obvs doesn't make it acceptable to the slightest but it is what it is, the younger generation learns from their mistakes and so on. This, imo, is particularly common amongst the more chronically online folks, those who see themselves as the ultimate upholders of justice. U can have assholes who are trying their best to do what is right while still being shitty in their own ways. Snape can save the world and represent the power of redemption while still being a pathetic and miserable person. James and Sirius can be extremely cruel bullies while still being brave and noble by risking their lives and fighting for the cause when they were barely out of school (particularly Sirius, given what he was raised to believe in). Regulus can still be honourable and brave for ultimately sacrificing his life in hopes of bringing down voldemort while still retaining the fact tht he was obsessed with a cult leader calling for genocide (and incidentally, we hv no proof tht regulus stopped believing in all his other prejudices before his death).

None of these characters need to be confined to the 'a part of the LGBT community- or homophobic' binary to categorise them into good and evil, in the sense that the uwu marauders and Slytherin skittles (who were literal DEs in canon) are always the good ones and Snape gets the rear end of the stick. Plus being a part of the LGBT community doesn't automatically make ur character interesting,complex, or better, neither does it need to be their entire personality..imo this idea isn't as progressive as it's made out to be and isn't the representation ppl think it is.

These are thoughts haphazardly floating around in my brain and I cannot write a satisfactory and conscise conclusion to save my life, so, uhh, feel free to fill in lmao

I feel like all the Skittles have SOME sort of weird thing that's going on with them. Tw mentions of blood and dissecting

Barty is batshit crazy. Wild, messy, and all over the place. Almost terrifying. He makes ur mom jokes and threatens to kill or hurt or fuck someone who's messing with him. He also learned how to do his own tatoos and piercings, thats why he has a new tattoo or piercing every month. He finds it fun and silly to be stabbing his ear and shoving a piercing through it, likes the sting cause it gives him adrenaline

And there's Pandora who says the most out of pocket shit. She has weird visions sometimes and seems to be everywhere and knows everything. And she's so incredibly calm while saying the wildest shit ever that it scares some people. People never hear her footsteps, and she just shows up randomly. Her voice is so calm and peaceful that it really doesn't fit her liking in scary creatures

Then Evan, who is just as off-putting as his sister. Unlike Barty, who is chaotic, he's more reserved and calm. But sometimes does creepy stuff and acts like it's normal. He is weirdly fascinated with disecting humans and animals. Also has a weird interest in teeth and dead animal corpses. He probably learned how to preserve them somehow. He has a like thing where dead butterflies are stuck to and he wakes up everyday to admire it as a way to start his day.

Dorcas has an interest in lucid dreaming and shifting and all things psychological. Sometimes she'll say stuff like "oh I sent a message to you in your dreams, you got it, right?" Most of the time, you probably won't get it, but it happens sometimes. Mostly to the slytherin Skittles and Marlene. She also learned to do nonverbal spells earlier in her years because it helps give her more control over her own mind. She has definitely learned and did research on why the imperius curse does what it does to its victims

And Regulus, though never to admit out loud, fucking loves astrology. He learned about it through Pandora, and since then he's been doing astrological readings. He just finds it cool how something like a time of birth, the position of a planet, the moon phase of your birth, and all can say a lot about a person.

Anyways it might not fit some characters but it's how I think of them and I love them this way cause imagine like Pandora walking up to Barty and say "certain plants can bloom above dead corpses" and Barty suggests that they have to see it happen for themselves

Or Dorcas coming up reg like "did you get my message?" And Regulus said "yeah, it's written in the stars that your relationship will go well don't worry and stop pestering me in my dreams"

Or Barty making a new piercing and Evan suggesting that he should make a piercing out of one of his insects legs and Barty was really close to doing it before Reg stopped them

Or Regulus catching squirrels for Pandora to keep in her little squirrel cage and have as a pet that'll probably die because Evan keeps feeding it the wrong food

Sometimes, the Skittles all get hurt except for Dorcas, and she says stuff like "yeah because the universe is protecting me. I'm their favourite mortal"

Barty getting slightly unsettled and maybe a bit flustered when he sees Evan so focused on learning how to use his new dissecting tool, just tweaking it here and there for his own liking yk

Regulus in a bad mood cause today's horoscope says that it's going to be shit.

(god i've had this partially finished in drafts for a while but im actually gonna post it now)

the 1 by taylor swift (specifically the bridge and the last verse/chorus idk but all of it kinda works) is regulus talking to sirius, hear me out in this overly detailed explanation:

so like the "I'm doing good, I'm on some new shit/Been saying "yes" instead of "no"/I thought I saw you at the bus stop, I didn't though/I hit the ground running each night/I hit the Sunday matinée/You know the greatest films of all time were never made" bit is about regulus trying to move on with the slytherin skittles and his own new group of friends and sort of trying to imitate what sirius found with the marauders and the other gryffindors. the bit about the greatest films of all time never being made is how sirius and regulus definitely had their shared dreams and ideas that they were planning on doing together when they grew up.

the chorus "But we were something, don't you think so?/Roaring 20s, tossing pennies in the pool/And if my wishes came true/It would've been you" basically talking about how they were everything to each other when they were younger, and if regulus had gotten his wish then it would have just been him and sirius forever. and "In my defense, I have none/For never leaving well enough alone/But it would've been fun/If you would've been the one" is talking about how regulus probably felt after sirius came back from hogwarts, and regulus felt like sirius had moved on and he had just become a bother, despite how much he might have wanted to keep playing with him and creating their own little fantasy world.

okay so next is the verse: "I have this dream you're doing cool shit/Having adventures on your own/You meet some woman on the internet and take her home". i imagine this is reg when he was a little lonely kid, imagining all of the amazing adventures sirius was having without him. honestly y'all, it breaks my heart thinking about how lonely it would have been in grimmauld place for most of the year for him like-

the next bit of the second verse and the second chorus are basically along similar lines of the first, like reg just saying how the love they had for each other was super meaningful and yet sirius lowkey tossed it away like it was nothing, even before he left for james (no hate to sirius btw, just trying to say what reg was probably feeling while sirius was out and actually enjoying his life)

anyhoo, the bridge and final chorus are where things get especially black brothers-coded (or even narcissa/andromeda coded but we are not going into allat right now). So the bridge (is it the bridge?) is "I, I, I persist and resist the temptation to ask you/If one thing had been different/Would everything be different today?", which is basically reg wondering about whether any differences to what he did would change what happened, especially when sirius ran away. if sirius didn't run away would they have gotten closer? if regulus had stood up for sirius would they both be kicked out? yk, that kind of questioning.

"We were something, don't you think so?/Rosé flowing with your chosen family/And it would've been sweet/If it could've been me/In my defense, I have none/For digging up the grave another time/But it would've been fun//If you would've been the one" is definitely the MOST sirius and regulus coded bit in the song. like? the whole rosé flowing with your chosen family? regulus definitely would have seen the partying around the school hosted by the gryffindors, so he most likely would have seen sirius in his element, surrounded by the people he chose to call family.

i think that towards the end of the song, it's definitely a more mellowed, wistful kind of longing for sirius. regulus knows that he's not sirius' first choice, and he's learnt to be okay with that. his self-blame is a bit more sarcastic now, because it was never his fault for trying to re-establish the relationship between them. and sure, while it would have been fun if sirius was still standing by him, being the older brother that regulus wanted him to be, reg sort of found his own chosen family.

As a Sirius fan, I have started feeling a lot of solidarity with Snape fans- I feel their same complaints- that the character is getting lambasted for having flaws on page while new Marauders fans can sit in moral superiority for stanning someone who had two lines dedicated to them, that the narrative in-story is being handed off to these three line OC's while the original character is left with nothing, terrible mischaracterization. Snape fans who might randomly find this, I feel you!!

Yeah, weirdly enough, the more screen time a character has, the more shit they seem to get from the fandom.

It's not even a Marauders-only thing. If you look at the Golden Trio - Ron, Neville, Ginny, Luna get butchered all the time. But then you have characters like Theo Nott who had maybe one line in the book and they're suddenly everyone's favourite sweetheart?

I get that we don't have much canon to work with sometimes, but it bothers me. Like, we see in canon that Draco Malfoy's closest friends are Crabbe and Goyle (one of them dies in the fiedfyre, which is obviously traumatising to the both of them), but this never gets explored - instead they get replaced with Nott, Zabini and Parkinson, usually, who are these cool, edgy, lovable friends of Draco's.

Same how Pandora, Barty Crouch, Evan Rosier and Dorcas have been made into the ""Slytherin skittles"" instead of exploring actual characters that Regulus likely a relationship with in canon, like Snape, Bellatrix, Narcissa etc.

 You were pretty happy with how things were going. It's been over a year since you guys fought the Dread Doctors and after that nothing has been chasing you and your friends. You want things to stay like this and you pray to whatever God that nothing evil is lurking around here and planning to do some shit. 

 It was another Saturday night and you were sitting on the sofa with your boyfriend, Scott, watching some movies. While Stiles was sitting on the floor, doing whatever on his laptop. You leaned your head on Scott shoulder, inhaling his cologne that you love dearly. Scott turned his head to look at you and gave you a smile before turning his attention to the movie again. 

 “Isn't this great?” You asked after staring at Scott for a while. Both Stiles and Scott turned their heads towards you and Stiles gave you a confused look.

 “What's so great about staying home on a Saturday night?” Stiles questioned and i rolled my eyes at him. 

 “That's not what i meant!” I exclaimed as i leaned forward to grab the remote to pause the movie. “I mean, nothing bad has happened to us in a year.”

 “Maybe someone or something is making a year long plan before attacking us.” Stiles replied and i stared at him, wondering why can't he accept the fact that for once we are at peace. 

“Stiles.” I said his name annoyed and he just stared at me. “Maybe for once, nothing wants to attack us.” 

 “She's right. It's always a pattern of 6 months before someone does something to us, but now it's been a year and nothing has happend Stiles.” Scott mentioned and i nodded my head, agreeing with what Scott said. Stiles sighed and rolled his eyes before turning back to his laptop.

 “I'm just saying, anything can happen at any moment and we should be prepared.” Stiles stated while typing on his laptop. I looked over at Scott and he shrugged his shoulders now knowing what is up his best friend.

 “Okay so lets say something is indeed coming for us, but how would we know?” You pondered your own question, how would you guys know.  “They'd send us a text message.” Stiles replied sarcastically and Scott chuckle beside me, which made me hit him in his side before grabbing a pillow and throw it at Stiles. 

 “What the hell!” Stiles exclaimed as he picked up the pillow before turning around and glared at me. Before he could say anything else the lights in Scott's house started flickering which made us all stop what we were doing and stare at eachother.  

“Told you they were coming!” Stiles yelled and Scott told him to shut his mouth. I looked out the window and the light post outside were also flickering. “Scott, man, I have a fucking bad feeling about this.” All the lights were flickering really bad now and in all honestly, you were scared. What if Stiles was right and something is about to kill you three right now. You grabbed Scott's arm and hold on him for dear life.

 “It's okay, nothing's going to happen. It's going to be okay.” Scott reassures you and he pulled you closer to him. You hide your head in the crook of his neck as you tried to calm your heartbeat. Nothing is going to happen, you repeated in your head over and over again.

 Suddenly the room lit up with a bright flash of lightening, and thunder rattled the windowpane, startling the three of you. You looked outside again and it started to pour rain. “Nothing to worry about, it's just the bad weather.” You said a bit unsure, since nothing like this ever happened before but you tried shrugging it off and play it cool. 

 “So you are saying that the lights flickering is just from the 'bad weather'.” Stiles air quoted as he stared at you, annoyed. 

 “Stiles, it's pouring outside. The lighting must've done something to the electricity which made these lights flicker.” Scott addressed to Stiles and Stiles was shaking his head, not listening to a word we are saying.

“Seriously?” Stiles sighed in annoyance and shake his head. “Lights flickering isn't normal man, it's a fucking sign of something bad is going to happen or some ghost is near us and is ready t-” Stiles stopped mid-sentence as he stared outside the window behind you and Scott. You turned around to see what he was looking at but there was nothing.

“Stiles?”

“I-i got to go, i uh, something came up.” Stiles stammers as he quickly started to pack his stuff and you and Scott stood there just staring at him.

“Stiles, where are you going?” Scott asked his bestfriend, stepping closer to him. Stiles mumbled something under his breath before putting his jacket on. He grabbed his stuff and made his way to the door before he turned to look at us.“Something bad is going to happen. I can feel it.” Stiles warned us, before he jolted out the door. I stood there, not knowing what to do before turning my gaze to Scott.

“Do you think something is coming for us Scott?” I questioned him and he shrugged his shoulders before running his fingers through his messy hair. “Stiles has been right about many things before.”

“But it's been so long since some crazy shit happened.” Scott stated and i nodded my head in agreement. I sat back down on the sofa and put my face in my hands. 

“I don't have a good feeling about this.” You whisper and Scott sat down and wrapped his arm around you.

“Hey, whatever it is we can fight it. We always does.” Scott assures you and you slowly nodded you head. There was still the bad feeling in the pit of your stomach and maybe Stiles was right. Something is coming.Scott stood up and streched his arms out for you to take. You looked at him confused and he laughed before taking your hand in his and pulling you up. “We're going to sleep, it's been a long night.” Scott claims as he was dragging you up to his room. 

“Scott! My mom, i didn't tell her. She's going to be pis-”

 “Relax, i called her before you came here asking if you can sleep over and she said that it's okay.” He interrupts you, giving you a kiss on your cheek and made you blush in the process. 

 “You were planning this weren't you?” You asked teasingly and he nodded his head while taking his shirt off.

 “Any reason to spend time with my baby girl.” Scott answers you and you rolled your eyes at him. You were thankful that you wouldn't be walking in the storm with probably something out there.Scott gave you some of his clothes which you changed into. You were exhausted by the event that happened today. Your mind was running crazy with thoughts and fear. A part of you wished that nothing is coming to Beacon Hills and hurt you guys, but your gut feeling says otherwise.

 “Good night love.” Scott mumbles as he lazily wrapped his arms around you waist and bringing you closer to him, so the both of you can fall asleep.

 “Goodnight.” You replied and closed you eyes waiting for sleep to take over.  You were hoping that nothing bad is going to happened. But only thing you could do was hope.
