So I dragged myself kicking and screaming and, yes, mostly in denial, through the last episodes of A Journey to Love.

My thoughts can be summarized as follows:

Obviously this is mainly due to me being horrifically traumatized by Yuan Lu’s death. After all, they told us from the get go he wouldn’t live to 20. They made it clear he had a deadly heart disease. And then. They had the nerve. They had the audacity. They had the actual fucking bahoonga BALLS to follow through!?

But then I found myself sobbing at literally every good guy death scene, plus all of the mourning scenes. The latter was in large part thanks to Alen Fang's acting - deepest apologies to him for just referring to his character as 'the slutty one' for the majority of the show. Not that I was wrong. Also thanks to strong performances from He Lan Dou for Yuan Lu's death.

Anyway so I need to add this gif x4 for the Liudao Hall babies:

Qian Zhao, da ge, who made mistakes but always did right in the end

Sun Lang, who just wanted to hold something fluffy at the end, dying a hero

Yuan Lu, who died in his princess's arms after running to deliver a letter rendered useless by the Emperor of An's greed.

Yu Shisan, who lived as he lived and had such a happy moment with Chu Yue right before it all became irrevocable.

When they added Yu Shisan to the snowball fight, I just about lost it. Liu Yuning's acting there - having the realization about Shisan's death as he watched them play in real time was so well done. Really hurt.

Plus I'll make a couple of versions with edits.

For the Wu Emperor. I knew it was gonna happen from the spoilers but damn, him genuinely learning the value of friendship and brotherly love made me root for him. Dude did not deserve to go out like that. Thank goodness for the magic of CDramas where he lived just long enough to pass on his will to Ning Yuanzhou, and do one last act of good.

It also ensured Duke of Chu was able to pass on his command to his daughter, Chu Yue, before dying of the same (was not clear if her bro died or not, or if dad was always going to choose her).

And for Deng Hui. Started out thinking he was just a sexist bastard. Turns out he was one of the most principled characters in the show.

Their deaths didn't make me cry, but I respect them.

Also loved Chen Du Ling's (Empress of Wu) small part in this. I may not like all of her characters but she can deliver a scene and hold a room. It was a bit cathartic to see her put every man in their place, and basically decide the fate of two countries, even though her lament that she'd only ever have power through another held true.

Ah Ying, my baby girl. This is a character that could have turned people off from the beginning. Thanks to strong writing and stronger acting, it did not. I was super impressed with He Lan Dou. She can dial it up and dial it down in a single take, and can play big dramatic scenes with a subtlety that some older actors cannot grasp. This was the first thing I've seen her in, though for her and Chen You Wei (Yuan Lu) I might watch Tiger and Crane if someone tells me it's good.

I still think Li Tongguang is a perverted and creepy child, who never managed to learn (except in literally the last ep), but at least I trust that he will treat Ah Ying well. I don't hold it against him for screwing up the battle - he was trying to be benevolent but made a bad choice.

The main couple win it for me this year. What an inspired pairing. They beat out heavy hitters including Bai Lu x Everyone which was near impossible. Something to do with letting Liu Shi Shi use Liu Yuning's height against him at every possible moment. Also the 'if you die, I'll finish the job and then follow you' is my favorite dynamic. I swear when Ruyi threw those bombs, NOT NEEDING TO HAVING ALREADY SUCCEEDED AT KILLING THE KING AND PRINCE, just to join him, y'all I died. Good for whoever posthumously gave her the Marquis title on her own (not just furen) - couldn't tell if it was Li Tongguang acting as regent or Dayang (great shot of those two at the end).

The final episode was one of the best final cdrama episodes I've seen. I might have to make another post about that. In sum, despite losing a large portion of the well-loved cast, the remainder gave a world-class finale. The visuals were incredible (explosions are my favorite). The final scene was beautiful (though I'm a bit surprised they gave it to Chu Yue instead of Ah Ying who knew all 6 of them closely).

I’ve recced this one before, and it hasn’t let me down since then. A time-traveling Draco happens upon 7-year-old Harry Potter at Privet Drive and can’t help rescuing him, royally fucking up the timeline and his own life in the future in the process. You might be leery of a fic where Draco ends up raising the kid version of the guy who—as an adult—he falls in love with – I worried about that, too, but the author somehow manages to keep that from being weird, which is pretty impressive. Buckle up for this one, because it’s a wild ride with lots of twists and cliffhangers!

Many MDZS/CQL authors have attempted palace AUs (probably after watching Nirvana in Fire), but so far, this is the only one I’ve read that’s succeeded—and hot damn. It’s so good. In which LWJ, recently made Emperor of China and still mourning the man he knew as Wei Ying, makes an arranged marriage to one “Jiang Wuxian.” He consigns his new spouse to the Empress’s palace without bothering to look at his face—and Wei Ying, stir-crazy in said palace, then decides to sneak around the Forbidden City at night in disguise, where he is apprehended by Lan Wangji on the rooftops by moonlight. The perfect mix of plot, character, and romance, with a delicious dash of identity porn and a tasty conspiracy. I swooned and you will, too!

Truth Will Out (when caught on video) - End_OTW_Racism! by kizukatana (CQL/MDZS, Wangxian, modern cultivation AU)

This is a modern AU where WWX is kicked out of the Jiang Sect and stripped of (most of) his core after being blamed for Jiang Fengmian’s death on a group night hunt; he finds a home in Caiyi Town with Wen Qing and her family and starts supporting himself with a nighthunting YouTube channel, after not one but two meet-uglys with LWJ. 😂 The author’s summary references an event that, 140K in, still has not happened, so don’t rely too much on that – the story focuses a lot more on WWX building a new life with his channel and his inventions, and on his growing relationship with LWJ. The modern cultivation worldbuilding is great, and you’ll love the star turns by Wen-popo as WWX’s cutthroat business manager and NHS as the designer who supplies WWX with increasingly slutty (affectionate) cultivation outfits.

True confessions: I did not like SVSSS. *Hides behind a desk* But I’m still glad I read it, because so many great authors are doing such great stuff with the source material. This no-powers modern AU is pure comfort food… which is appropriate, since it’s about renowned chef Binghe expressing his love for Shen Yuan with food after they re-enter each other’s lives. So warm and tender – a perfect winter read.

"And what are you supposed to be?" Nie Huaisang asks, swirling his champagne glass, in his slutty zombie nurse costume. It barely covers much of his body (Wei Ying is sure he picked it specifically for the very short skirt) but somehow it's still tasteful, even if it looks a bit like fetishwear.

Wei Ying laughs and does a little pirouette, the long, black and red robes he wears flowing like a dark cascade around him. His hair falls down his back unrestricted, only a red ribbon holding some of the strands from obscuring his face.

"Don't you like it? I've put a lot of effort into it, you know?" And he spins the black flute he picks up from his sash, a red tassel at the end of it. "I'm this evil guy from the ancient times, the Yiling Laozu. I read a legend about him and how he could raise the dead by playing the flute. Apparently he killed a lot of people and everyone feared him and they stormed his lair to kill him in a joint effort never seen before."

Huaisang hums. "Sounds scary. So how did you come up with the costume? Did they describe the guy's clothes somewhere?"

"Ah, no, after I read all that, I just had a dream in which I was that guy and this is what I was wearing! Anyway, where's Lan Zhan? He's coming, right?"

"Lan Xichen said he'll drag him out if it's the last thing he does, but he probably won't be wearing anything interesting. Honestly, can you imagine Lan Wangji of all people dressed up for Halloween?"

Wei Ying tries imagining something and decides not to pursue those thoughts in public. His mind is providing a lot of enticing material that he should not be thinking of right now. Maybe later. Definitely later.

As if on cue, Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji walk in, wearing a very conservative version of matching dragon costumes (white capes over some very well tailored suits, with beautiful, ornate horns on their heads). It's more than Wei Ying expected, of course, but showing some skin would have been nice. After all, Wei Ying is, as Huaisang first mentioned when he walked into the party, "with his whole tits out".

He can't wait to go say hi.

"Lan Zhan!"

The man looks towards the familiar voice, and his eyes go wide, the porcelain of his face becoming a shade even whiter.

"I'm so glad you could make it! You look amazing, by the way, I didn't think you'd dress up!"

But Lan Wangji still doesn't say anything, still shocked, heartache filling his chest alongside a weird sort of gratefulness.

"So, what do you think? Like my costume?"

"I do." Wangji answers before he thinks about it. "It fits you."

He lets Wei Ying drag him around, his eyes taking in the features of his beloved with sweet nostalgia swimming in his golden eyes.

I’m enjoying writing a second figure skating AU in which LWJ is a trans man again, but also has a completely different relationship with his body and what he finds that he wants to do with it than he did in Ice. (I’m not naming songs in the fic itself, but the program described is to Janelle Monae’s Make Me Feel.)

“Artsy and abstract is fine for the judges as long as we get to be real slutty sometimes,” Wei Wuxian had informed Nie Huaisang during the first video call after they agreed to choreograph for them. And so for much of April and May, Lan Zhan puts on a close-fitting jumpsuit with a high-necked halter top that shows off the muscles in his shoulders and back, and Wei Wuxian dons a rather scantier version that exposes delightful amounts of his chest and stomach, and they hold each other significantly closer than their competitive routines tend to involve.

After what adds up to hours, between rehearsal and performance, of Wei Wuxian’s thigh between his and Wei Wuxian’s ass grinding (there is no other word for it) against his crotch and Wei Wuxian’s hands all over his body with touches designed to appear very intentional indeed, Lan Zhan has made a decision.

“Wei Ying,” he says, the weekend after their return from tour, “I have changed my mind.” Wei Wuxian makes an enquiring noise. “If we can find a form that I am comfortable with,” Lan Zhan lets him know, “I would like to have sex with you.”

Okay so AU.

WWX and WQ get married so they can have an easier time adopting A-Yuan and green card bullshit.

WQ is in America on a school visa when big family emergency happens back home and A-Yuan needs a family and WQ just looks at her roommate that is one child short of being a MILF. And she's like "Hey Wei Ying, you want kids, right?" And he is like "Yeah, why?" And WQ is like "okay so my grandmother can't take care of my baby cousin anymore and I think he'd have a better life over here?" And WWX is like "that may be debatable" and WQ is like "we can discuss our dystopian society another time, you want to adopt a child with me or not?" And WWX is like "Sure, we need to do something about your citizenship." And WQ is like "I'm working on it." And WWX is like "hold up, I have ringpops" and WQ is like "what" and WWX pulls one out, and gets on one knee and is like "my dearest lesbian, will you green card marry me so I can be your slutty bisexual malewife and adopt a whole child with you?" And WQ is like "shit yeah, we'll go to the courthouse on Monday"

So years later, WQ is a doctor, and WWX is a kindergarten teacher, and A-Yuan is a perfect little son boy.

WWX goes with A-Yuan to a kids birthday party and meets another parent there. Enter LWJ. He's raising his baby cousin Jingyi with the help of his brother. LWJ sees WWX there, by himself and is instantly infatuated with him. he finds out WWX is LJY's teacher and they talk about how he's a delight to have in class but also a little monster, and that is somehow a bonus.

WWX doesn't wear a ring because he fidgets and would lose one, hut LWJ doesn't know that and just assumed that the love of his life was dropped into his lap.

Of course this line of thinking is broken when WQ shows up. She got off her shift early, and unless she gets called in, she can stay and they can have a meal with A-Yuan and WWX after the party.

LWJ is consumed with lust and jealousy.

Anyway, he and WWX hit it off, become friends and eventually you can cut the romantic tension with a knife.

Eventually WQ is like "bro, my citizenship is good, we can divorce without any repercussions. We just need to figure out the custody with A-Yuan."

And WWX gets to jump LWJ's bones.
