Wardens & Wards
Due to the fragile nature of most mortals (harpies excluded) and the uneasy peace that still exists between many of the mortal races, especially humans and the immortals. The Zahra pharaohs decreed over a century ago that every mortal save harpies because of their strength and durability, would be paired off with one an immortal being, for their protection. This was also to stop the random feeding on humans by those who drank blood, because now, in their charge, they would have a constant food supply.
Three of the immortal races can live off of blood alone if needed: sirens, vampires, and lycans. Because the temptation and desire for blood is so strong, especially for vampires, it was deigned that in order to protect the general public in the cities and to prevent another war between mortals and immortals, that wards should also be the primary feeding source for their immortal wardens. While many vampires and lycans can and do eat human food, nothing is as satisfying as fresh blood from the vein.
However, ghosts and harpies do not partake in this registry and bond. Simply saying, because ghosts can wink out of existence at any given time if they fulfill their unfinished business and because the younger ones have a hard time controlling their abilities, it was deemed that they were too much of a liability for their charges. Harpies are the strongest of the mortal races, having strength and regenerated healing that could rival a siren, it was decided that they didn't need protection. So, that is why they are excluded from the system.
It is mandatory that all immortals and mortals of the 8 races register in the warden and ward registry when they turn 18 and they are paired off, usually for life unless something happens to either warden or ward. Every new member to the city, even if they've relocated from some remote region is required to participate in the registry. Some wardens & wards are romantically involved, some are very involved in every aspect of their lives, and some are simply just there to feed and to be bitten. The dynamic of each pairing is unique to the bonded pair.
This is a system that has helped keep the peace for over a century, and hopefully will continue to do so.

in 1972, zeinab shaath released the EP "the urgent call of palestine". inspired by the contemporary counterculture movement, and the protest songs of bob dylan and joan baez in particular, the then-teenage shaath used her life experiences (she was the first member of her family born outside of palestine (specifically, in egypt) in 1954) to write the first english-language songs dedicated to palestinian liberation. in 1973, she'd even shot a four minute music video for the title track in collaboration with the PLO. the original master was siezed by the iof in the 1982 siege of beirut.
you can read the full story about her, the songs, and how both the ep and music video were only recently remastered for international listeners with help from the majazz project and discostan here. you can listen to it (and buy it, both physically and digitally, directly from her) on the bandcamp embed/link provided.

Tumblr: we want people to be able to find new blogs to follow so you can find your community!
No not by seeing who people are reblogging from that's not allowed.
No you can't see who people are talking to with prev tags that's not allowed.
No you can't see the icons of the people you're following to know at a glance who's reblogging what and know them better. that's not allowed.
Sorry, did we say "find your community?" we meant "trawl through the endless swamp of the internet so you can reblog funny popular things"

The Premise
Over two millennia have passed since the original immortals were entombed in their eternal imprisonments for the crimes they committed against the mortal races. Not a day has passed in the last two thousand years that the immortals who survived those dark days cannot remember the blood and chaos that the elders unleashed on the land of Kemet in their pursuit of power and the merriment that came from their bloodlust. It was their actions that changed the world, that set the world on a new course and thrust the supernatural world into the light. Nor do the immortals forget the long nurtured dislike and fear that the mortals have for the supernatural races and know it is only a matter of time before the carefully crafted peace is obliterated once more.
In the absence of the elder rulers, Net of the house Zahra took control over Kemet and built the bloodied and broken kingdom back into the mighty empire that it was when the elders had seized control. The pharaohs that would follow Net have each added to Egypt's might and prestige. Their capital city, Thebes, stands the largest city in the known world. A hub for trade, wealth, and learning. The house of Zahra are no fools. They have not held onto power for two thousand years by keeping their heads buried in the sand. The current pharaohs have taken steps to keep the peace with the mortals, evolving laws and making them more welcome at the table of power, despite the disagreement expressed by many of the other supernatural races.
The shadows are lengthening. Rumors from around the world have reached Thebes of immortals acting like mindless beasts, how they have changed into the blood lusting creatures of old that are nigh unstoppable. Puzzling because only one similar occurrence can be traced through their long, recorded history and it was nothing like the reports the Pharaoh's are receiving. On the other hand, the relationship between the mortal human race and the supernatural community has become more strained as the threads of fanaticism has been preached on the streets by lycans and vampire alike, calling for the return of the elders who cowed the mortal race and put the humans in their place.
What is the pharaoh to believe? Rumors on the wind, or the rising unrest in their own capital streets? Will they take a stand and weather the storm, or will they give into madness like the rest of the world and descend into chaos? Only time will tell.

So the other thing is, in my headcanon verse, Dick and Jason (Todd) both definitely think Annabeth is dead.
She was a seven year old run away in the streets of Gotham. Neither Batman nor Jim Gordon were ever able to discover a single lead. Just from their mutual experience, the most likely options were death or trafficking that took her out of Gotham.
And at some point, after Tim became Robin (so Bruce and Dick were very tentatively starting to reconcile) but before Jason came back as Red Hood, GPD does finally find something.
Something is a damaged silver bracelet with Anna Elizabeth Wayne's initials engraved on one of the charms and a snapped link where a different charm (the elephant representing Dick Grayson) broke away.
It's an exact match for the gift Dick Grayson gave his baby sister the year she turned six, full of guilt about how little time he spent with her now that he and Bruce were barely speaking.
A hummingbird charm, in part as an indirect reference to Robin, in part because Anna reminded him of a hummingbird with her inability to sit still. A hummingbird in a flock of Robins and Bats.
A star and moon charm, for Kory who Anna idolized and who suggested the gift to begin with. Or for Bruce "I am the night" Wayne. Or as a reference to NIGHTwing. Dick's explanation changed based on his mood and the audience.
A tiny silver disk, engraved A.E.W.
A dog, just because Annabeth so badly wanted one of her own.
The bracelet is found in a crime scene full of teenage skeletons. There isn't a body that can be identified as Anna Wayne's- none are quite the right age, and none match Bruce's DNA sample- but some of the other victims are identified as run away children.
The conclusion seems pretty obvious to Jim Gordon.
Dick accepts it, grieves, and withdraws again, freezing Bruce out while he tries to come to terms with what happened.
Tim knows what's going on, but it all seems somewhat... detached somehow. As if he's watching a blurry bit of film. Like most of Gotham PD, his brain has glazed over most of the other details within the year. He doesn't have enough of a personal connection to see through Athena's manipulation of the Mist.
Bruce Wayne isn't accepting anything as fact until they actually find a body. Some gut instinct, the part of him that hold on to his subconscious impressions of Athena, tells him it isn't that simple.
He's right. The crime scene is actually a monster's nest, and one that Annabeth successfully escaped. But he doesn't know that. And he also isn't convincing anyone, including himself, that his denial doesn't stem purely from his guilt.
And then, with all of this context, a resurrected Jason Todd returns to Gotham in secret.
And, look, it's hard to imagine how his initial reunion with Bruce could have gone much worse...
But finding out that his baby sister, who despite all the other family bullshit he loved deeply, ran away from Bruce and was seemingly murdered in the same year as his own death?
Well... That's definitely not going to help.

the depopulation of the palestinian village of kawkab al-hawa (“the star of the jordan river”) is far from the only case in which a palestinian village was violently, entirely depopulated during the 1948 nakba. it's also not the only case in which neighboring kibbutz residents advocated for and even themselves participated in the destruction of houses, nor is it the only case in which elements of the village were only kept so they could serve a neighboring tourist attraction. however, it is a conspicuous case of all of the above, combined.
kawkab al-hawa happens to sit by belvoir castle, one of the best-preserved crusader castles in palestine. the village itself had been testified to in some shape or form from antiquity - the crusaders had referred to the village with the frankish name "belvoir", hence the name of the castle. after saladin retook it, the village as we know it today expanded into and around the castle's confines. by 1945, the castle had been in ruins for centuries, while the rural village housed 300, mostly farmers.
in the words of meron benvenisti: "In the Israeli context, it is preferable to immortalize those who exterminated the Jewish communities of Europe (in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries) and murdered the Jews of Jerusalem in 1099 than to preserve relics of the local Arab civilization with which today's Israelis coexist...Arab buildings spoil the myth of an occupied land under foreign rule, awaiting liberation at the hands of the Jews returning to their homeland."

Okay I’ve never asked on tumblr but I just found your page and I’m OBSESSED!!! I want to get/make a Vivarium/bioterrarium for millipedes and isopods and I can’t WAIT!! Please please if you have any advice at all, I’d love to hear it! Where to get supplies, the buggies themselves, how to handle them, what do you do if they get sick, how much space to they need for how many there are, etc? Your buggy babies are so cute!!
First off thank you! I love all my little guys as well <3
I ramble kinda a lot so I'll put this under a read more.
For advice I'm still very much a novice when it comes to keeping but I'll tell you what I can!
For tanks I got my glass ones second hand or ones made my the store I buy used to buy my millipedes from, you'd be surprised how cheap you can get a nice big one! For Acrylic THESE are the ones I've had the best luck with not warping BUT they sometimes have kinda blurry parts on the plastic, but still I'd say good for the price if you can't afford glass. I tape up some of the ventilation holes to keep more moisture in.
For soil that ISN'T bought from a specialist stores(Sometimes I can't afford it) I use Peat free compost, paired with leaves and rot wood I buy off ebay stores that sell bug/reptile products, I mix them together with some water and leave them in a tub for 1 week to soften up the leaves. Some people go out and get their own leaves and wood but I'm not really in an area to do that so I can't give advice on that. It's important to keep it moist BUT NOT WET!
Heat mat! You want one to put on the SIDE of the tank and not under it, just one would be enough. I have a timer plug for mine so they're on a few hours a day on and off all day. If you REALLY wanna spoil them then I've seen a few people use reptile headlamps.
For moss and plants I again just buy it off ebay in sheets and give it a cheap over to make sure there are no hitchhikers on it before I put it in the tank. It needs watered and looked after for a while for it to take to the tank. Carpet moss is mostly for looks while sphagnum moss is used to keep moisture in areas and should be water/sprayed often. I have a little fern plant in my tank rn they seem to leave alone. I know a lot of people use fake plants as well for decor!
You should make a point to put a little temp and humidity monitor in your set-ups as well. The special reptile ones can be expensive so I just but the little ones you put in rooms and have had no issues with them.
Don't forget to give them hides! Cork wood/bark or coconut shells are nice and cheap. You can also use man made items just make sure they can handle the moisture and aren't made of anything toxic to your new friends. Also give them little sticks and things to climb up on. Just make sure the lid is secured so they can't escape.
For food I just use kitchen scraps like carrot peel, cucumber, apples and melon, give them a cuttlefish bone and some dried tiny shrimps in small amounts once a week or so, but you can also use fish flacks instead. But remember! Leaf litter and rot wood is meant to be their main diet for most species.
For the millipedes I would recommend Ivory millipedes as a good starter one, they're lovely in colour and are often up top, hardy as well, and usually you can get them captive bred which I've had much higher survival rates with vs wild caught. For each species you'll have to look up their needs yourself though, there isn't a 100% catch all set up for all species. Woodlice/isopods I'd suggest dairy cows as they're lovely and also very easy to get a hold of. I will say species of Armadillidium(roly poly/pill bugs) are my fave and I'm very biased and want 500 of them.
For handling just be gentle! I wear gloves in a lot of my videos but that because I've incredibly sensitive skin and can't stand soil under my nails. The worse they can do to you is them staining your skin(not all species), or give you a little nibble. Make sure if you're handling to wash your hands off BUT be careful what hand soaps you use! Wash hands after as well some can be toxic to bugs from what I've heard.
For tank size hmm that's hard, usually you want soil as deep as their body but that can be hard, 10-15cm is what I aim for my BIG boys and 7-10cm for my others, deeper is better but sometimes you'll also just never see them again! You'll want a tank at least a few times longer than your pets body or at least big enough for them to filly stretch out in if you get really big millipedes like giants and a 120cm tank is just kinda unrealistic haha.
I do not have a lot of advice for if they get sick sadly, it's kinda of hard to tell honestly and usually when you can it's too late. I would just say don't beat yourself up too much if some pass away sometimes bugs just do that especially if you don't know their history.
Where to get them depends on where you're from and what you want. A ton of reptile/specialist stores will have wild caught which isn't great but they will have the largest range of species and usually also sell all the stuff you need to tank care of them. Ebay is where I've gotten most of my captive bred and I just message people if I've questions about their bugs there.
I think that's everything I can think of,
Again I'm a big novice when it comes to bugs, @onenicebugperday and @crevicedwelling likely know way more than me, though idk if they're open to questions but they likely already have a lot of info on their blogs.
