guys i love elu thingol a lot. i love the fact that he was good enough for a maia to fall in love with him, and that theirs is the first and only canon union of an ainu and one of the children. i love the fact that his people adored him so much that they refused paradise and the direct protection of literal demiurges because he wouldn't be there with them. i love that even though he's incredibly proud, ancient, experienced, and war-hardened, he actually tries to change his behavior and do better when he sees the error in his ways. i love that he is the first and only elf king in history to adopt a human as his own child

I thought it would be fun to participate in @sindarweek this year. I've been seeing a lot of interesting takes on them recently and it's made me really want to explore them more, and well, it just makes sense since Elrond is my favorite character.
I'd like to say I'm clever enough to take prompts and make art from it, but, I'm sure not. So, I kind of veered off a bit.
I feel like the Sindar kind of get the short end of the stick with how they're portrayed/ thought about in fandom. But, I think there's a lot of love and warmth there, so I decided to explore the (mostly) Sindar families in Tolkien's work. I also wanted to artistically push myself to do more complicated pieces, I had a lot of fun with this and will absolutely be drawing these characters more in the future!
So, here's Day One: The OG Sindar family to kick things off- Thingol, Melian, and Lúthien!

Ok but imagine the Noldor trying to have a nice banquet after the entire Finwean Fam has been therapized and released from Mandos. Except Eonwë is the one announcing the names and titles as people arrive (it’s supposed to be a sign of goodwill from the Valor).
All goes well (except when he announces to the entire room that “Fingon Findékano Astaldo Nolofiniwion, Prince of The Noldor and Husband of Maedhros Neylafinwë Maitimo Feanorian” has arrived. In his defense, Eonwë didn’t know secret marriages could last almost four ages). But the Real Drama starts when Elrond arrives.
When Elrond arrives; Eonwë looks at the Peredhel in the entranceway, looks at his magic Scroll of Heritage-Information, and there is a long moment of silence where Eonwë contemplates if he really wants to spend 5 whole minutes announcing Elrond’s heritages.
Eonwë, in the end, decides to take a shortcut. Cuz how wrong could it go? As such, he announced to the Finwean Fam, several courtiers, several politicians, and to the face of Finwe’s actual children that “Elrond, Lord of Imladris Remade, Descendant of Finwë Noldoran and Elwë Singollo, and [Insert Celebrian’s Introduction] has arrived.”
Speculations rise, and whispers are everywhere about what the hell “Descendant of Finwë and Elwë” could mean. (A lovechild, somebody says once jokingly).
Elrond was expecting Earendilion, Neylafinwion, or Kanafinwion, even Peredhel. He was not expecting the first kings of the Noldor and Sindar themselves to be named.
Anyway, the worst part is that because of Mixed Ancestry, Elrond actually does look like a combination of Finwë and Elwë. The lovechild rumors grow.

What she says: I’m fine.
What she means: The constant woobification of Fëanor and his sons and the constant Noldor bias in the fandom has really made it difficult for me to actually enjoy the Fëanorians and most of the Noldor as characters. It really doesn’t help that a lot of people like to demonize the Sindar for so many reasons. These fans won’t extend the same grace they give to the Fëanorians to Sindarin characters like Thingol, who made mistakes but at least tried to make amends for them, unlike Fëanor and his sons. In addition, their need to demonize Beren and Lúthien is honestly appalling, because it shows a fundamental misunderstanding of their story and the broader themes of the Silmarillion— that there is hope in the world that’s worth fighting for. And furthermore, the constant demonization and victim-blaming of Dior and Elwing is genuinely unsettling, especially when the Fëanorians are pitied for the crimes they committed. Lastly, their obsession with property rights and the Silmarils, and their willingness to justify the Kinslayings shows that these people have not truly read or understood the text, and they probably don’t want to properly understand it.

Some see Beren as idiotic for relying so much on Lúthien’s dad’s blessing to marry her instead of just running off with her as she was willing to do … but don’t y’all see how … un-toxic that is of him? He doesn’t want to take her away from her family forever or force her to cut all ties with them. He knows there’s a chance her dad will disown her if he takes her away and he doesn’t want to put her through that. (Thingol never directly says this, but I think it’s possible he would’ve, considering that he’d literally rather send this guy to die than let him marry her, so if she were to disappear with this guy, he probably wouldn’t be happy with her. Either way, Beren is an understandably paranoid person.) Plus it’s important to remember that at this point, he believes that she will outlive him by centuries - he has no idea of what is to come. So if he were to just take her away, he’d condemn her to eternity as an outcast from her family and people, long after his death. Instead, he takes the most dangerous path because that is the path that will allow them to be happy without costing Lúthien her loving relationship with her parents. A lesser man would’ve just swept her away. But Beren doesn’t want Lúthien to lose or give up anyone she loves in order to be with him. Come on, ladies, that’s husband goals right there.

can't believe it's canon that luthien says shit like "unless thou desirest to see thy daughter tinuviel weep" to thingol. she deadass pulls the "you don't want to see me cry do you dad?" on him. i know melian had to study up on ways to be effectively strict with one's children because thingol was the embodiment of go on girl give us nothing for that

Thingol for the first piece of 2024!
I feel like I finally nailed down a unique style for my digital art in the last year, and I'm looking forward to seeing where I can go with it in the next. I plan to put out a lot more art, aside from the characters I love drawing, I also want to focus on characters I haven't had a chance to explore yet. Once I finish the corrupted ring-bearer series I think I might open up requests again.
Thanks to everyone who's followed me and made notes on my art! You're a huge reason why I've been able to improve, it's been awesome returning to the Tolkien fandom after so many years!

New definition of nepotism just dropped
Thingol: I hate Noldor and none can enter here.
Thingol: Finrod? Finrod the beloved? My great nephew? TAKE ALL OF WEST BELERIAND
Thingol: I hate men and none can enter here.
Thingol: Morwen? Daughter of Baragund? Baragund Beren’s cousin? I WILL RAISE YOUR CHILDREN AS MY OWN

The take that Thingol overreacted to the news of the First Kinslaying is honestly a really bad take. And the fact that some people actually argue that “he didn’t know the Teleri”, or “those were just his brother’s people! Why is he so mad???”, it really doesn’t sit well with me.
Like, Thingol may be a Sindarin king, but he’s still ethnically related to the Teleri! He, the Iathrim, and all of the Sindar are all ethnic descendants of the Teleri, which means that some of them probably had Telerin relatives who were killed in Alqualondë! Hell, I'm pretty sure Thingol also had Telerin friends who were slaughtered in the First Kinslaying! He had to do something for the sake of his people, or they would be angry at him for letting the Noldor off the hook!
Also, Thingol has every right to be angry about the First Kinslaying. After all, the Noldor basically slaughtered the Teleri for refusing to hand over their ships, took the ships anyways, and then they lied to him about their reasons for coming to Middle-earth, too. They literally took advantage of his hospitality while hiding such a horrible crime from him, and they're basically disrespecting his authority and trying to assert their own claim over Beleriand! No wonder he gets so upset about them lying to him!
And yet, despite everything, he doesn’t lash out. He maintains his dignity throughout this whole crisis, even though he was surely furious at being deceived by his potential allies. All things considered, Thingol handles this situation with quite a lot of grace, and he still manages to maintain an alliance with both Finrod and Fingolfin's people.
He deserves a lot of credit for this, imo.
