Finished my completely handsewn tunic and made the pauldrons attachable, so I assembled everything I have made so far. Getting closer and closer to a finished cosplay, with only a collar for the tunic, a cloak, and a crown/headpiece left to go. Plus, I got the exciting notification today that my wig has shipped!

Many years have passed since I last set foot into these realms and (almost) none now lives, who remembers. I can hear it in the wind, the calls od those who now thrive in these lands: „who the fuck is that?“

To the new followers; welcome! To the old followers who still remember me: Whoa! Tenn‘ ambar-metta truly!

I am Elfself, a Silmarillion- and Tolkien blogger from the first age. A notorious fan of Haldir, the Noldor and Elves in general (#theFeanoriansSendTheirRegards). I was a cosplayer and artist, hosted Elvish workshops at Tolkien conventions, led Team Fëanorian as teamcaptain in the first silmarillion readalong and was - so one could say- slightly relevant on this corner of the internet.

Now I’m returning, from the depths of the chasm of reallife, to blog alongside other Elves once more.

* rings of power stuff (Yes I am a diehard Silmarillion fan AND I like the show. Fight me. (Actually don’t fight me, I’m good with the sword irl and I much prefer civilized discussions)

But I like books and discussions more than websites (and I own some websites! Still like physical resources better). So I still dig into books to find a lot of things-there’s a copy of the Silm in every room in the house except the one bathroom that has a tub because that seemed too dangerous. Two in the bedroom in case both Smaug and I are looking for things at the same time. <3

I wrote a Game of Thrones fanfic as a challenge, having never watched any of the series and having only read the first two pages of the first book. No resources, just picking up my notes from cosplayers. So you can do whatever you want.

My suggestion if you’re going by way of online resources is to also nest yourself in a small but active Tolkien discord with a lore or writing advice channel (or both) so you can fact check if something seems weird or uncertain (no online resource is perfect). When I do use online to check things about characters, my first stop is Silmarillion Writers Guild, because they do in depth bios and have gone beyond the Silm on the characters.

How much Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit content have fanfic writers actually consumed before they wrote fanfics? Did you only watch the movies or only read books? Did both? Or Did either of the two then went to Tolkien Gateway (because I’m leaning towards this option)? I want to write Thranduil/Reader 😭

I couldn’t wait editing one of the photos we took today of my Gil-galad cosplay. I wanted to do a proper autumn shoot with Gil-galad and while I almost chose another cosplay to wear, in the last minute I returned to my decision to wear this cosplay, and I’m so glad I did.

Getting very close to a finished Sauron cosplay! Today, I finished the cloak, and while I was in the midst of doing some test photos with the cloak, my wig arrived! So pleased with how its all coming together. I have dreamed of doing this cosplay for 15 years and am so excited to finally look in the mirror and see Sauron looking back.
