i know you've probably answered this a thousand times but what is it that makes gewis what it is to you? other than obviously the respect and a tad of idolisation sometimes i feel like they have the teammate dynamic that most is what it seems like from first glance. but i want to get it, because i want to savour their current dynamic before it's changed forever.
Alrighty firstly anon I apologise for making you wait like a week for this answer, it wasn’t one I wanted to rush so I sat on it for a second. (Edit: whoops I rambled for an hour straight, sorry dude, that’s Friday night stream of consciousness for you)
This is just my personal interpretation of Gewis as a dynamic and pairing, other people might not agree, but it’s why I’ve been here for just over two years now, and what I always end up coming back to with every interview, video or quote—
It’s about Respect
You can say a lot about George now, he’s really filled out as a person as he settled into the top end of the grid— he’s found his rhythm, he’s started to experiment with personal independence and brand — but from day one at Williams let alone day one at Mercedes, George has always respected and admired Lewis. He has never been quiet about that fact. In fact he goes above and beyond to be loud about it, not just as a regular expected teammate commitment, but as a true fan.
No one else with a foot on the grid has said the words “greatest of all time” about Lewis as much as George has. It’s not even close, and it came long before George was Lewis’ teammate- the posts of George whooping away in the Singapore 2018 pit lane with the team, or even sitting on Lewis’ side of the garage in 2016 in Abu Dhabi stand as a testament to that.
But beyond that George has also expanded on why he finds Lewis so important to the sport, George has talked about both lewis’ driving skill, his role in shaping British young drivers, and the part Lewis plays in supporting minorities and charities. George was there in 2020 kneeling with Lewis without a blink, he stood up and was one of the first of the drivers to call out the abuse Lewis was receiving from piquet as unacceptable, and what first endeared George to me— he was the only driver at the time to loudly and purposefully call AD21 utterly unacceptable from the second it happened, without waiting for what media would tell him was okay to say.
Then he got into the Mercedes car, and it never faltered. In early 2022 there were constant snips from interviewers asking George how he felt about going against Lewis, if he reveled in scoring more than him, and every time George shot them down, sometimes with a barely concealed eye roll, and proceeded to speak about how Lewis was never going to stay this way, because he’s Lewis Hamilton.
George is no saint, he and Lewis both had their faltering moments, where their races didn’t line up or one of them got the better of the other- but it never lasted. They’d shove each other on track and the next week we’d find out they’d been to dinner in a pub together to talk it out. Strategy would go terribly and the post race interviews would be icy, and then two weeks later they’re talking about sitting in each others laps to sky dive, or going free diving together as a bonding activity. Even when it was horrible like Qatar 2023 you had Lewis diving in front of a camera to apologise for the incident and George falling into his arms looking like he’d been through hell and back without a second of hesitation. They are both so deeply human about each other.
And that leads me to Lewis. We often focus on George because frankly he’s got his heart on his sleeve. It’s easy to know how George feels and thinks and loves. It’s not easy with Lewis- especially if you aren’t looking. But as someone who dedicated far too much of his free time to reading what Lewis says, and archiving the things Lewis says about George, Lewis has said a lot more than people think.
He was reserved at first, for someone who makes his mark with Change, Lewis also doesn’t love it, and it also took him a WHILE to really befriend Valtteri as fully as we now appreciate. That will always be special to Lewis because Val was the stitches on an open wound. George is the physio. He is the next stage of recovery where you push yourself. It’s no surprise to anyone that Lewis wanted to stick with Val a little longer at first. But then he got George—
And it’s not appreciated just how much Lewis evidently threw himself into making George feel at home and listened to. He took George on trips that they’ve both mentioned but kept private. He sat him down to dinner with the team. They shared data and worked hand in hand to try their best to improve some dog shit cars. Lewis has even spoken about sharing set up data with George and working together where he wouldn’t have with other teammates. At the end of 2021 Lewis mused that he’s been trying hard to become a better person, a better teammate, a process he started with Val and put into full force with George. He ignored old impulses and sat hip to hip with this new guy who he watched develop from an awkward gp3 rookie to his teammate. He spoke often about how George wasn’t really new, he was always part of the team, just learning to lead, and Lewis was there to make that as smooth as he could
He saw George as a future for the team, and as much as I avoid thinking about it Lewis has spoke about that, even when he decided to move, he called George a perfect fit for the future of a team he will always adore as his family. There’s no shortage of evidence that despite his best effort to seem detached and private from the grid, Lewis has cared about and supported George’s growth. From dorky Instagram stories of George after his first pole and win, congratulatory comments and hugs, telling anyone who asked that he wanted to be part of George’s growth and future wherever that took him. From big things like dragging George onto the pit fence after their first podium together in France 22 to present him to a crowd, to little things like crossing his fingers over his heart and ignoring an interviewer to chant “go on buddy” watching George qualify in vegas last year. Lewis has been there for it all.
From Sakhir to Singapore Lewis has stood George up after his most painful moments and pushed him to keep going. When all eyes were on George for crashing in Singapore, Lewis was speaking to anyone who would listen about how anyone could have done that including himself, and that he extended support to George without acting as if George wasn’t strong enough to handle it alone. Lewis has always approached George with Respect foremost, and support if he wanted it.
Lewis and George are such and intertwined concept that it’s like a Pandora’s box.
When you stare at the face value idea, they couldn’t seem more different. Cool, older, fashionable athlete with a record so long it would take years to break down, and an awkward younger team shirt wearing driver in his early prime who is only just starting to make a name for himself.
But you pry that lid up and you have an ever expanding web of similarities and dedication. Both of them from what the racing world would label as not well off families who faced and absolute mountain to get into f1, yes Lewis SIGNIFICANTLY more than George ever would, but George himself has marked Lewis as the example he could look to of a British driver like him who still made himself champion without a family connection or money to grease the wheels. I would put money down it was Lewis’ tales of how Ron Dennis supported him, that lead George to approach Toto for the same support when he was facing the end of his career. Lewis went to Mercedes, so that’s where George set his dreams on, because if it was good enough for Lewis and Michael it was what he wanted. You have George in Sakhir cramming bruised and bleeding feet into Lewis’ shoes to try and to fill them for even a second and cementing his future with Lewis’ blessing on his back.
It may seem harder to equalise the depth of George’s hero worship in Lewis— it’s why a lot of people don’t love the ship and I get that— but for me when you look at all Lewis went through in terms of teammates and the hellish experience of Alonso and Nico to the good but temperamental experiences of Jenson and Valtteri— Lewis’ time with George represents growth into something better, something he always said he wanted to be, the driver who supports others. George didn’t ever roll over and give Lewis what he wanted to please him, he pushed Lewis to the limit of his skills and by Lewis’ own admission, sparked a fire in him to keep going harder and higher. To Lewis, George is a jolt on a fire that had been cruelly starved of oxygen, a glimpse of a flame to follow, so different to himself but not different at all.
They are parralells as much as much as they are opposites. Lewis is the teammate George always prayed for, the one he wanted, and the only one he wanted, and for every second he had him George soaked that influence up like sponge. He changed his fashion to try to stick out a little more, he started picking charities he wanted to support because that’s what Lewis did, he decided to make his mark by joining Seb in the GPDA because it’s where he felt he could make the biggest change. George made Lewis his benchmark not as something to beat, but as a target to aspire to. If he was competing with Lewis, then he knew he’d worked hard enough and got it right.
In comparison George wasn’t necessarily what Lewis wanted, but he was what Lewis Needed. In the wake of the worst disrespect the sport could fathom, Lewis got a teammate that would support him at every turn off the grid, but fight him clean and fair on the grid. He got someone who respected him beyond anything, while also helping to put the energy back in him to race and fight and grab victory with his teeth. He got a test in the principals he wanted to become, a test that rewarded him with adoration.
George and Lewis are dawn and dusk, different, but ultimately bridges to each other. They love so fiercely, intensely, and with joy, that it just feels impossible to me not to look at them and fall into an endless fall of what ifs. They stand alone without need for each other- but they also make each other better

But the TQ+ cult continues to deny that children are transed
Dr Helen Webberley said that her licence had been revoked on a technicality
ADRIAN SHERRATT FOR THE TIMES
James Beal, Social Affairs Editor Friday July 19 2024
The General Medical Council has revoked the licence to practise of a controversial British doctor whose offshore clinic treats transgender children.
Dr Helen Webberley, 55, will lose her licence in Britain from Friday but will remain on the GMC’s register, following the decision by the medical regulator.
The decision was made by the GMC after she did not comply with a registered doctor’s legal obligation to revalidate their licence every five years.
Webberley runs GenderGP, an online company registered in Singapore, which facilitates access to puberty blockers and hormones for adults and children.
She told The Times that the decision would not prevent her from continuing in her role at GenderGP and said that she did not personally treat the patients.
Tumblr media
Michael Webberley was struck off in 2022 for prescribing hormones to patients as young as nine without proper assessments
Webberley said: “I fought incredibly hard to keep my licence, both for myself and also for the community, because it’s important to set precedent. Now to have it taken away on a technicality, if you like, is very heartbreaking, but I will continue my work as I have done.”
GenderGP assesses adults and children with gender dysphoria and connects them to doctors outside Britain, in the European Economic Area (EEA), for prescriptions for hormones.
This means UK children as young as eight can access puberty blockers, despite the Cass Report, a review of trans healthcare led by the paediatrician Dr Hilary Cass, concluding there was no good evidence for prescribing them.
Webberley was suspended from practising medicine in 2022 after she was found to have committed serious misconduct by a Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service panel over her treatment of three trans children. She successfully appealed against the decision at the High Court in 2023.
Tumblr media
Dr Hilary Cass’s review found there was no good evidence to support the global clinical practice of prescribing hormones to under-18s to pause puberty
TIMES PHOTOGRAPHER RICHARD POHLE
Webberley said that she had not used her licence to practise since 2017, when investigations into her conduct by the GMC began. She said that she could not revalidate her licence because she could not find a “responsible officer”, or suitable person, to vouch for her fitness to practise.
Doctors are required to notify the GMC of a designated body and responsible officer to do this.
Webberley said: “The difficulty is … I no longer have a connection with an NHS trust or a GP surgery. I don’t have a responsible officer. It’s also very difficult to get that connection after what I’ve been through.”
She says she was offered the chance to take an exam in order to revalidate her licence, but declined because they “don’t have one for doctors working in transgender medicine”.
Tumblr media
Michael and Helen Webberley are now thought to be living in Spain while their business is registered in Singapore
The GMC then withdrew her licence, which it can do if it determines that guidance to revalidate has not been complied with “without reasonable excuse”.
Webberley, from south Wales, said that she would carry on her work at GenderGP.
She said: “I’m not allowed to directly treat and manage individual patients [but] I’m not treating them.
“Treatment means sitting down with somebody, making a diagnosis, making a treatment management plan, prescribing medication, following up investigations and results.
“With GenderGP we have a whole team of professionals who do that. I don’t treat patients individually. They [the GMC] don’t have a regulatory role in my wider work.”
A GMC spokesman said: “Every licensed doctor must take part in the revalidation process, which provides assurance that they are keeping their knowledge up to date, are fit to practise and that no concerns have been raised about them.
“Doctors who do not have a connection to a designated body or suitable person are able to revalidate in a number of ways, including by passing a written multiple choice test called a revalidation assessment.
“There are 12 assessments to choose from, and doctors are encouraged to choose one closest to their most recent area of specialty. We cannot tailor assessments to every doctor’s specific area of practice.
“If doctors do not comply with our guidance on revalidation without reasonable excuse, we may withdraw their licence to practise.”
Webberley and her husband Michael, who set up GenderGP in 2015, are now believed to live in Spain.
As an online business based abroad it is not registered with the Care Quality Commission, but Helen Webberley has denied basing it in Asia to avoid scrutiny.
Michael Webberley, 67, a former gastroenterologist, was struck off in 2022 for prescribing hormones to patients as young as nine without proper assessments.
GenderGP was also criticised in the High Court earlier this year for giving “dangerously high” levels of hormones to a 16-year-old, who was born female but identified as male, that could have resulted in sudden death.
Webberley has called the court claim “untrue”. The Times reported last month that GenderGP, which has more than 10,000 patients, had ditched health advisers in favour of an AI algorithm providing “self-service” treatment.
Behind the story
The health secretary Wes Streeting has indicated that he will seek to make permanent the temporary three-month ban on puberty blockers being supplied to children (James Beal writes).
But Helen Webberley said children at her clinic were still getting hold of them.
Laws to ban the drugs being supplied by private or offshore clinics were passed by Victoria Atkins, Streeting’s predecessor, in emergency legislation before the general election.
They are due to expire on September 3, but the Labour government suggested last week that it would, subject to court proceedings, renew the ban with a view to making it permanent.
It followed the Cass Report, which found there was no good evidence to support the global clinical practice of prescribing hormones to under-18s to pause puberty or transition.
However, Webberley, in an interview with The Times last month, said patients at her offshore clinic were going abroad, using foreign doctors and chemists, to side-step the ban.
She said: “The parents of young people who are affected by this ban will find another way. The last thing is that they will allow their child to stop the puberty blocker and start going through puberty. That’s going to really really affect them mentally and physically.
“I know mums and dads who are just going on holiday to get their puberty blocker instead. They’re going to wherever they’re going on holiday this year.”
Distancing GenderGP, her clinic, from their actions, she said: “We don’t have to find those opportunities, the parents find those ways of managing it.”
Now the revelation that she has lost her GMC licence to practise may increase concerns about her clinic, which operates out of reach of regulators such as the Care Quality Commission.
It follows disclosures that GenderGP had created an AI algorithm to make treatment recommendations rather than using health advisers.
However, given the state of transgender healthcare in the UK, with long waiting lists for treatment, it may not deter transgender patients from turning to GenderGP.

Luftwaffe performs 'Rapid Viking' exercise in Iceland
Diego Alves By Diego Alves 30/07/2023 - 10:00 in Military, Military Operations
The German Air Force (Luftwaffe) began what it called the "lean and mean" operation on Friday (28) to demonstrate its ability to move quickly to Iceland as part of a two-week exercise named "Rapid Viking".
From July 28 to August 10, six German Eurofighters and 30 military personnel from the 73 "Steinhoff" Squadron of the Tactical Air Force will be deployed at Keflavik Air Base, according to a statement. Once on site, the squadrons will carry out several daily training flights.
The Rapid Viking Exercise is an opportunity for the Air Force to demonstrate how it can move to Reykjavik “at supersonic speed,” said Lieutenant General Ingo Gerhartz, chief of staff of the service.
The Luftwaffe intends to serve as the "first response," he noted in the statement. "That's why we are training for a fast displacement with as few human and material resources as possible, especially in this scenario."
Tumblr media
Two A400M aircraft sent 25 tons of material and personnel to Iceland. The first plane carried nine pallets more personnel, while the second plane carried five pallets of material plus a hydraulic test bench.
On average, the Air Force would require between 130 and 150 tons of material to participate in an exercise, at a cost of up to €200 million, said Sergeant Oliver M. This amount of cargo can take up to a week to be "packaged", including three days just to load the pallets on the aircraft.
For Rapid Viking, the 25 tons of material, worth about €2 million, took only two days to be packed and one hour to be loaded into the aircraft.

A Luftwaffe squadron was last deployed in Iceland in 2012 as part of a NATO air policing initiative. Iceland is a member of NATO, but does not have its own armed forces. The allies show solidarity with the 375,000 inhabitants by temporarily reallocating forces to the island nation.
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia in February 2022 led the European military to reassess the state of their capacity stocks, as well as their ability to prepare for battle quickly. Last October, the German air force and naval troops carried out a rapid deployment in Estonia, participating in a month-long exercise dubbed the "Baltic Tiger" to test how quickly the services could provide reinforcements to the allies in need.
Last year, the Luftwaffe also held its first deployment in the Indo-Pacific, completing its goal of reaching Singapore less than 24 hours after takeoff from Neuburg Air Base in Bavaria.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Singapore conducted its first execution of a woman in 19 years on Friday and its second hanging this week for drug trafficking despite calls for the city-state to cease capital punishment for drug-related crimes.
Activists said another execution is set next week.
Saridewi Djamani, 45, had been sentenced to death in 2018 for trafficking nearly 31 grams (1.09 ounces) of diamorphine, or pure heroin, the Central Narcotics Bureau said. Its statement said the amount was “sufficient to feed the addiction of about 370 abusers for a week.”
Singapore’s laws mandate the death penalty for anyone convicted of trafficking more than 500 grams (17.64 ounces) of cannabis and 15 grams (0.53 ounces) of heroin.
Djamani’s execution came two days after that of a Singaporean man, Mohammed Aziz Hussain, 56, for trafficking around 50 grams (1.75 ounces) of heroin.
The narcotics bureau said both prisoners were accorded due process, including appeals of their conviction and sentence and petition for presidential clemency.
Human rights groups, international activists and the United Nations have urged Singapore to halt executions for drug offenses and say there is increasing evidence it is ineffective as a deterrent. Singapore authorities insist capital punishment is important to halting drug demand and supply.
Human rights groups say it has executed 15 people for drug offenses since it resumed hangings in March 2022 , an average of one a month.
Anti-death penalty activists said the last woman known to have been hanged in Singapore was 36-year-old hairdresser Yen May Woen, also for drug trafficking, in 2004.
Transformative Justice Collective, a Singapore group which advocates for the abolishment of capital punishment, said a new execution notice has been issued to another prisoner for Aug, 3 — the fifth this year alone.
It said the prisoner is an ethnic Malay citizen who worked as a delivery driver before his arrest in 2016. He was convicted in 2019 for trafficking around 50 grams (1.75 ounces) of heroin, it said. The group said the man had maintained in his trial that he believed he was delivering contraband cigarettes for a friend he owed money and he didn’t verify the contents of the bag as he trusted his friend.
Although the court found he was merely a courier, the man still had to be given the mandatory death penalty, it said. The group “condemns, in the strongest terms, the state’s bloodthirsty streak” and reiterated calls for an immediate moratorium on the use of the death penalty.
Critics say Singapore’s harsh policy merely punish low-level traffickers and couriers, who are typically recruited from marginalized groups with vulnerabilities. They say Singapore is also out of step with the trend of more countries moving away from capital punishment. Neighboring Thailand has legalized cannabis while Malaysia ended the mandatory death penalty for serious crimes this year.

The whole team needed it says Leclerc after taking first pole of 2023
Charles Leclerc took his and Ferrari's first pole position of 2023 with a blistering effort around Baku which will see him start first for Sunday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix – and he said Friday evening's result came as a relief. Leclerc took his 19th career pole position, and his first since Singapore 2022, by beating Red Bull's Max Verstappen in a Friday qualifying session that set the grid for Sunday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix. READ MORE: Leclerc beats Verstappen in qualifying thriller for third straight Azerbaijan GP pole After rumours linking him with Mercedes, plus the announcement that Ferrari's Sporting Director Laurent Mekies will leave Ferrari to lead AlphaTauri when current boss Franz Tost departs, Leclerc was relieved to take pole. "It feels good for, I think the whole team needed it," he said, "because we arrive here where… it’s a part of our job I think any teams in Formula 1, you need to deal with rumours, pressure, and it’s obviously a bit more difficult to perform under those circumstances and we did really well, so I think it’s good for the whole team." "[It feels] really good especially considering the beginning of season I’ve had. Obviously we haven’t had the greatest of beginnings but it’s great to be back on pole. "I didn’t expect it and I think we came into the weekend thinking it would already be a great result if we were in front of the Astons and Mercedes and now we find ourselves on pole. HIGHLIGHTS: Watch the action from a thrilling qualifying in Baku as Leclerc stuns Red Bull to take pole "Really really happy with that, but we need to see obviously tomorrow with the Sprint race and for Sunday’s race, and I think we are a little bit more on the back foot there – but anyway, it’s a really good surprise and extremely happy with my lap," he said. He explained: "Since FP1 I wasn't feeling quite at home with the car; the car looked very quick but for some reason I couldn't get my feeling and couldn't get my groove with the car today and, obviously with a lack of practice, I couldn't catch up on it and from the beginning of Q1 I was just lacking in confidence, lacking in rhythm..." WATCH: Nyck de Vries and Pierre Gasly crash out of Azerbaijan Grand Prix qualifying The Spaniard added that he used two sets of soft tyres in Q1, which prevented him from having an extra set of softs in Q3, and he seemed to lament the fact that parc ferme restrictions mean the car's set-up will essentially be unchanged for the rest of the weekend. Yet, Sainz said qualifying P4 was still a decent result. "I guess we have some work overnight to see what we can do with the car," he concluded. "We've got to gain the confidence back and try and get some feeling back with the car. We will play around with things but we are quite limited… the best of today's actually being P4 given I felt really far away from where I want to be." via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

Hip-hop / R&B girl group XG releases their newest single, “IYKYK,” which serves as the second pre-release track from their second mini album, AWE.
Rosa Gulliver of TINYGMUSIC | 13th October 2024
Tumblr media
"IYKYK" expresses XG’s bold challenge to break boundaries with new endeavours, portraying the members as they explore the limitless universe at lightspeed. The track invites listeners to join them on a journey to an uncharted dimension that is not easily reached. “IYKYK” samples m-flo’s 2001 hit, “prism” and blends it with a rhythmic two-step beat, creating a sensation of drifting through space and heightening the excitement for the adventure ahead. Paired with the release of the single is a music video. The music video for “IYKYK” offers a fresh perspective from XG’s previous videos, showcasing the world through their eyes. It explores the question, “How does the world look to them? Is it mysterious and otherworldly?” The concept centres around a “Mutated Sense,” where each XG member’s unique sensory distortion allows them to see the true light (a planet). Philippine mayor extradited on charges of being Chinese spy seeks re-election
A former Philippine mayor accused of spying for China is seeking re-election next year, The Independent reports.
Alice Guo, the former mayor of Bambang City, is currently being held in Pasig City Jail after she was extradited from Jakarta, Indonesia, in September.
Ms. Guo, also known as Chinese national Guo Hua Ping, was wanted by the Philippine Senate for refusing to appear before a congressional investigation into her alleged criminal links to Chinese crime syndicates and money laundering.
Ms. Guo, 34, who claims to be a natural-born citizen of the Philippines, has denied the charges, calling them “malicious.” Her lawyer Stephen David told reporters on Friday that she would formalise her candidacy for mayor on October 8, the last day to file nomination papers. He also said:
Definitely, she will be running for mayor. It would be better if she runs so we can find out if the people still love her, because right now there’s a lot of negative publicity, but many also sympathise.
He also added Ms. Guo was confident of her victory because “so many people are rooting for her.”
Runaway mayor
In August, Philippine authorities filed several money laundering charges against Ms Guo and her associates. She fled the country in July, travelling to Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia on her Philippine passport, the Philippine Anti-Crime Agency said.
The former mayor and her two alleged brothers fled the Philippines by boat to Malaysia, Sheila Guo, an alleged accomplice arrested earlier in Indonesia, told a Senate hearing.
Ms. Guo was running for mayor of Bambang, an agricultural town north of the capital, as a Philippine citizen in 2022.
The Philippine Senate began investigating Ms. Guo in May, two months after authorities raided a gambling centre catering to offshore customers, mostly Chinese. The raid uncovered what the authorities described as online fraud at a premises built on land partly owned by Ms. Guo.
Ms. Guo refused to appear at a follow-up hearing in June, citing emotional trauma from a previous attendance at the hearing. As a result, the Senate charged her with contempt of court and ordered her arrest. In August, the Philippine Anti-Corruption Authority removed her as mayor, citing serious misconduct for her alleged links to illegal gambling operations in Bamban.
