Tyre preview: Alternative tyre allocation returns at Monza
Tyre preview: Alternative tyre allocation returns at Monza By Balazs Szabo on 31 Aug 2023, 15:42 For their home race at Monza, Formula One's tyre manufacturer Pirelli will bring the softest tyre compounds of their six-compound range with the alternative tyre allocation also making a return after the first test in Hungary. Following the incident-filled and action-packed Dutch Grand Prix, Formula One made the trip to Norther Italy's Monza that will play host to the Italian Grand Prix. While the track is usually referred to as the Temple of Speed, Pirelli will bring a bold tyre selection to Monza. The C3 will be used as P Zero White hard, C4 as P Zero Yellow medium and C5 as P Zero Red soft. These are the softest compounds in the Pirelli Formula 1 range, already nominated for five other race weekends so far this season, albeit mainly on street circuits or slow tracks like the Hungaroring. It will be spectacular to watch how the weekend unfolds as Pirelli will try out their Alternative Tyre Allocation that has already caused a stir in Hungary. The rule means that each driver will have just 11 sets of slick tyres (three Hard, four Medium and four Soft) at their disposal for the weekend. In qualifying, drivers can use only one type of compound per session (unless it's wet): in Q1 the Hard, in Q2 the Medium, and in Q3 the Soft. As for the race strategy, tyre degradation is usually quite low around the 5.8km Autodromo Nazionale Monza. Last year, there were no fewer than eight different strategies deployed by the top 10 finishers. Max Verstappen and George Russell (first and third respectively) opted for a single stop, while Charles Leclerc – who finished second – had already made two stops before a safety car towards the end of the race allowed all three drivers to stop again. The Italian Grand Prix is one of the races that has counted for every drivers’ championship since the very first competition in 1950. It has always been held in Monza with only one exception, when Imola hosted the race in 1980. Monza was inaugurated in 1922 and is one of the oldest tracks in the world still to be used, second only to Indianapolis. The team with the most victories at Monza is Ferrari (19 out of 72 total grands prix) while the drivers with the most wins are Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, on five each. Pirelli will remain in Monza after the Italian Grand Prix for a couple of days of testing with Alpine and Red Bull. The teams will take to the track on Tuesday and Wednesday after the race (5-6 September) to test prototype slick tyres. Pirelli's Motorsport Director Mario Isola commented: “As usual, the European Formula 1 season draws to a close in Monza: which is also Pirelli’s home event as our headquarters are just a few kilometres away from this iconic circuit. Monza is synonymous with speed, as its nickname of the ‘Temple of Speed’ capably demonstrates. To this day, it’s where the fastest race in the history of Formula 1 was held, with Michael Schumacher setting an unbeaten average race speed of 247.585 kph back in 2003. As a result, teams use the lowest possible aerodynamic downforce levels to favour top speed by reducing drag. Stability under braking and traction coming out of the two chicanes are the two key factors that challenge tyres most on this track, as well as the lateral loads exerted in the fast corners such as Parabolica (named after Michele Alboreto) and Curva Grande. After Hungary, Monza will be the second time that the Alternative Tyre Allocation (ATA) is trialled, which uses two fewer sets of tyres than the standard format. This offers a benefit in terms of CO2 saved both during production and transport, as well as giving teams and drivers a wider range of strategic option. For this reason as well, we have chosen the trio of softest compounds for Monza – C3, C4, and C5 – which has already been nominated five times this season.” via F1Technical.net . When a TV Camera Ruined a Ferrari 1-2 #Shorts
The year is 1995. Jean Alesi leads Ferrari team mate Gerhard Berger at Monza, and the adoring Tifosi watch on. That is until a TV camera, mounted to the back of Alesi's car, falls off and instantly destroys Berger's suspension. Alesi would later retire with a wheel bearing failure, ending what could've been an incredible race... pointless. As such an iconic site of motorsport racing it is only fitting that Red Bull's Max Verstappen is on the cusp of history. Following his race win at Zandvoort, the Dutch driver is just one win away from setting a new record for consecutive wins at 10. With a win he would overtake former Red Bull driver and four-time World Driver Champion Sebastian Vettel. Meanwhile, Sergio Perez will be hoping to bring an end to Max Verstappen's dominance and prove to Christian Horner he is deserving of a seat next season. With a win Max Verstappen will hold the record for consecutive race victories Ahead of the race, Mercedes confirmed both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will stay with the team for the 2024 season.  MailSport breaks down everything you need to know ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, including when you could see Max Verstappen make history.  When is the Italian Grand Prix? Track Guide Drivers will complete 53 laps of the 5.7km track and its fabled Parabolica the long-right hander at the end of the back straight. Nicknamed the Temple of Speed, Monza is a famously fast track with cars spending around 80% of a lap at full throttle.  The Park section will test the drivers' technical abiities where a series of big stops into tight chicanes will give the brakes a serious workout. There are just 11 turns around a lap where quality over quantity has never rung more true.  Monza has featured in every Formula 1 season since 1950 and given it's iconic Parabolica, high speeds and twisting corners it is easy to see why.  Share or comment on this article: Max Verstappen looks to make history with 10th consecutive win as F1 makes it's way to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix: Everything you need to know including qualifying and race start times, plus how to watch via Formula One | Mail Online https://www.dailymail.co.uk?ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490&ito=1490

Its not that they have a magic bullet Vasseur outlines what it will take to reel in Red Bull over second half of season
Ferrari team boss Frederic Vasseur has expressed optimism that current F1 pace-setters Red Bull can be caught, claiming marginal gains “in every single pillar of performance” will be key, as opposed to unleashing one “magic bullet”. Red Bull have dominated the 2023 season so far, winning all 13 races from Bahrain to the Netherlands with Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez to build up comfortable advantages in both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships. BEYOND THE GRID: Fred Vasseur on his ‘biggest challenge’ and pursuing the ‘pinnacle’ with Ferrari Nearest rivals Mercedes are now 285 points adrift, followed by Aston Martin and Ferrari, who have experienced an up-and-down campaign with an SF-23 package that has reached the high of pole position but also left drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz scratching their heads. Asked about this year’s titles being out of reach, and what would represent a successful second half to the year for Ferrari, Vasseur said: “For sure, if you have a look on the numbers, it’s quite difficult to imagine we could be champions on the team and driver championships. Ferrari are fourth in the constructors’ standings after 13 races, behind Red Bull, Mercedes and Aston Martin “But we need to keep the same mindset, to try to get the best on every single weekend, not to be focused on the championship. We have to improve the package, also to improve what we are doing on track, to try to get the best from the package that we have – it’s where we have to be focused. “I don’t want to fix a target to say we have to do ‘this’ or ‘this’. As long as we have room for improvement, we have to be 100% focused on this. It’s clear that on every single topic, and every single pillar of the performance, we need to take a step forward.” IT’S RACE WEEK: 5 storylines we’re excited about ahead of the Italian Grand Prix Pushed on where he feels Red Bull are making the difference, Vasseur added: “I’m not sure that they have an area where they are much better than someone else. I think it’s everywhere they are performing, in every single pillar of performance, the drivers, engine chassis, aero, suspension, strategy… “I think it would be a mistake to say, ‘Okay, they are much better than us in this area, let’s be full push on this one’. We have to try to get the best from what we have in every single area and to do a small step everywhere.” This feature is currently not available because you need to provide consent to functional cookies. Please update your cookie preferences TECH TALK: Who's got faster so far? | Crypto.com Ferrari confirmed at the Dutch Grand Prix – where Leclerc and Sainz endured a particularly challenging weekend at the wheel – that they are working on a “brand-new” car for the 2024 season, as they look to deliver on Vasseur’s wish to improve in all areas. With all of the above in mind, Vasseur underlined his belief that Ferrari have the “team spirit, passion, budget and facilities” to get back to winning ways and end a title drought that stretches back to the 2008 campaign. “It’s never that something is missing in a team when you are not winning,” the Frenchman commented. “Even when you are winning, it’s not that you have something special – I’m really convinced about this. THIS WEEK IN F1: 10 quiz questions on all the F1 news ahead of the Italian Grand Prix “It’s not that Red Bull have a magic bullet. Perhaps that Max is doing a mega job today, but also it’s coming from the fact that they are dominating and they are putting Max in a very good position to do a good job. “I’m not sure that we have to change something. We have to improve everywhere, in every single area, in every single department. If two or three tenths are missing, I’m much more convinced that it’s 10 times two or three hundredths of a second per lap than something else.” via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

Lewis Hamilton and George Russell: Mercedes drivers extend contracts
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell will continue as Mercedes' driver line-up for at least the next two years. Hamilton has signed a new contract that will extend his period with the team to 13 years and keep him in F1 well past his 40th birthday. And Russell, who joined Mercedes in 2022, has also signed a two-year deal. The move confirms pledges by Hamilton and team principal Toto Wolff that a new deal for the seven-time champion was only a matter of time this season. For Hamilton, it allows him to continue a quest for a record eighth world drivers' title, which both driver and team believe was robbed from them at the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, when Hamilton lost out to Red Bull's Max Verstappen after former FIA race director Michael Masi ignored the rules in operating a late-race safety car period. New 'more accessible' F2 car for 2024 follows F1's styling lead | Formula 2
The new chassis Formula 2 will use from next year has been revealed for the first time in the paddock at Monza. Dallara’s F2 2024 will replace the F2 2018, which is in its sixth year of service. Its design closely resembles the latest generation of F1 cars which followed the introduction of its new technical regulations last year. F2 said the design is intended to give junior drivers a close approximation of driving an F1 car, while also ensuring close racing. Particular attention has been paid to altering the cars’ steering system to make it accessible to a wider range of drivers, following concerns the previous design was poorly adapted for female racers. Tatiana Calderon, who raced in the series in 2019 and 2022 and found the car harder to handle than an F1 car, was chosen to shake down to F2 2024 at the Varano circuit in Italy last month. Development of the car will continue over the coming months. Reigning champion Felipe Drugovich is among those who will test the F2 2024 for Dallara. F2’s 11 teams are due to receive one example each of the new car in December. A further example will follow in January. In order to keep cost increases to a minimum, the car retains the same gearbox and 3.4-litre turbocharged V6 Mecachrome engine used by its predecessor. The FIA’s deputy president for sport, Robert Reid, said “a huge amount of work has been done by the FIA, Formula 2 and its partners to put together what is a truly impressive package focused on close racing, the latest safety technologies, even greater environmental sustainability and better accessibility for drivers than ever before. “This significant step will bring Formula 2 closer to the pinnacle of motor sport, ensuring that the next generation of drivers get the best possible preparation for the future and also put on a fantastic show for the fans around the world.” F2 CEO Bruno Michel described the new car as “powerful, challenging and safe”, and said it will “continue to provide great racing and a lot of overtaking opportunities, something that the fans expect from F2.” “It has been designed also to fit all types of drivers, taking into account FIA’s consideration regarding the steering effort,” he added. “This is obviously key to making our sport more inclusive, by enhancing our car’s driveability and comfort.” This article will be updated. Alfa Romeo unveil new Italian-inspired tribute livery for their home race in Monza
Alf Romeo are set to run a special one-off livery for this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix from the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. Gone is their usual red and black configuration, with the dazzling tricolore of the Italian flag in its place. While they usually run the Italian flag colours on their rear wing, that design is now much more prominent across the main sidepod and engine cover, with the traditional red only glimpsed on the top of the car’s nose. This is in tribute to the Alfa Romeo’s latest road car, the 33 Stradale, with gold accents to match. “Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake’s tribute livery embodies the spirit, the passion and the vision we have put in the 33 Stradale: it is pure, classic sportiness, and it combines looks with performance," said Alfa Romeo’s CEO Jean Philippe Imparato. "I cannot wait to see it on track this weekend." WATCH: Five great Italian Grand Prix battles from the F1 archive “As we approach our home race in Monza, it’s a pleasure to unveil this incredible livery, a true tribute not only to the 33 Stradale, but to Alfa Romeo as a whole and to the country it hails from, Italy,” said Team Representative Alessandro Alunni Bravi. “This livery is probably one of the most beautiful we’ve ever had on a car, and to be able to showcase it in front of our home crowd – including hundreds of our team members from Hinwil on the grandstands – is an honour for all of us.” IT’S RACE WEEK: 5 storylines we’re excited about ahead of the Italian Grand Prix Alfa Romeo lie ninth in the constructors’ standings, two points away from Haas in eighth. The team haven’t managed to score since Valtteri Bottas came home 10th in Canada back in June, but of late, some new upgrades have propelled the team forwards in the pecking order. Bottas and Zhou Guanyu will be able to take their new-look cars for a spin when practice gets under way on Friday. via Formula 1 News https://www.formula1.com

Red Bull F1 boss Christian Horner fires shot at 'short-termist' rivals only interested in their own 'little area' - ahead of the Austrian team's attempt to win a 14th consecutive Grand Prix
Red Bull F1 boss Christian Horner fires shot at 'short-termist' rivals only interested in their own 'little area' - ahead of the Austrian team's attempt to win a 14th consecutive Grand Prix Christian Horner has enjoyed remarkable success during his 18-year career Red Bull are in search of their 14th consecutive win at the Italian Grand Prix Horner is the sole team principal left standing from Red Bull’s debut year in 2005 By Tum Balogun For Mailonline Updated: 04:58 EDT, 31 August 2023 Red Bull principal Christian Horner reckons the current generation of F1 team managers are 'very short-termist' compared to their more illustrious predecessors.  The 49-year-old has enjoyed a long and successful career in the sport that has seen him lead the Austrian team to five Constructors' championships all while competing against some of the sport's most famous bosses.  Horner is the sole team principal left standing from Red Bull’s 2005 debut and he was keen to identify what separates some of the current faces from the likes of Bernie Ecclestone, Max Mosley, Jean Todt, Ron Dennis and Flavio Briatore.  'I had the privilege of seeing up close how some legendary leaders were operating when I first came into the sport,' he told Planetf1.com. 'Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley were running the business very tightly. 'But then there was Ron Dennis, there was Jean Todt, there was Flavio Briatore. Big personalities, big characters. Christian Horner has led Red Bull to five Constructors' championships since the team's F1 debut in 2005 Max Verstappen has won all but two races this term and is closing in on his third world title Red Bull maintained their unblemished 2023 season with their 13th win at the Netherlands GP 'I suppose the difference between now and then is that they were all quite entrepreneurial, and they thought of the bigger picture whereas now you see a bunch of managers in the room that are very short termist, who only focus on their little area. So that’s been an interesting change.' Horner and his squad are in the midst of a level of dominance that is remarkable even for Red Bull, a team that held the record for consecutive race wins for a driver during a commanding four year-spell ending in 2013.  The team have won all 13 races this term to sit 255 points ahead of Ferrari in the constructor standings, while two-time world champion Max Vertsappen is on a record-nine race winning streak and could seal his third title at the Japanese Grand Prix next month.  Horner would not be drawn on the secrets of their success and insisted he carved out his own lane in the sport, rather than copy one of the principles he admired.  'There’s nobody that I modelled myself on,' he added. I had a lot of admiration for them whether it was Ron or Frank or what Jean Todt did. Flavio in his flamboyant way. 'They’re all very different but the one commonality that they had was that they would do the best that they could for their team and assemble the right group of people together.'  Share or comment on this article: Red Bull F1 boss Christian Horner fires shot at 'short-termist' rivals only interested in their own 'little area' - ahead of the Austrian team's attempt to win a 14th consecutive Grand Prix via Formula One | Mail Online https://www.dailymail.co.uk?ns_mchannel=rss&ns_campaign=1490&ito=1490

F1 set for first fully dry race weekend in four months | 2023 Italian Grand Prix weather
Formula 1 is set for its first all-dry weekend of track action since May’s Miami Grand Prix with the trip to Monza for the Italian Grand Prix. Each of the last eight rounds have seen at least one session in which the track was wet. The round preceding those was due to be the first of two events in Italy – but the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix was cancelled due to flooding in and around the Imola circuit. It will be not only dry but quite warm this weekend at Monza, which is hosting the final round of the season which takes place in Europe. Both practice sessions on Friday will be held in the afternoon, meaning drivers will be facing air temperatures of 24C in first practice and 26C in second practice while the supporting Formula 2 and Formula 3 championships may be on track when it’s just 15C in the morning. There is no expectation of rain during either of F1’s sessions, although there will be north-blowing winds that could be as strong as 15kph. That means drivers will have a tailwind down the pit straight, but will go up against a headwind on the back straight. It will make the slipstream effect weaker on the run to turn one, but stronger entering Curva Parabolica. The weather will be almost identical for Saturday in terms of temperature and wind, with the F3 sprint race being held in cool 16C conditions but the rest of the day’s track action all taking place when it is 25C or higher. It will be 27C for F1 qualifying. Sunday will be the hottest day of the weekend, seeing temperatures of 17C for the support races, rising to 29C by the time the grand prix begins at 3pm local time. There is a chance of rain, but it is less than 20%, and the winds will be blowing more in a north-easterly direction which means there will be a headwind – and a chance to set up overtakes – between the second Lesmo and the Ascari chicane. Alfa Romeo shows off special tweaked livery for Monza
Alfa Romeo shows off special, tweaked livery for Monza By Balazs Szabo on 31 Aug 2023, 10:02 Just a day before action gets underway at the Italian Grand Prix, the Sauber-run Alfa Romeo team has unveiled a special, tweaked one-off livery for the Monza F1 race to celebrate the Alfa 33 Stradale. The Hinwil-based outfit will run a striking livery at Monza, paying tribute to the launch of Alfa Romeo’s latest fuoriserie car, the new 33 Stradale. Featuring the gold accents of the new 33 Stradale – themselves a nod to its illustrious namesake, an icon of the 1960s and one of the most legendary cars of Alfa Romeo’s history – and the Italian flag’s tricolore on a field of black, the livery to be used in Monza will be one that will set fans’ hearts racing. The livery was unveiled by Alfa Romeo drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu, during a special event at the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese, near Milan, to mark the launch of the new 33 Stradale. The 33 Stradale will be the centre of attention in Monza as well, with the team's two drivers unveiling the car in the team’s garage at the Italian Grand Prix on Thursday, 56 years to the day since the unveiling of the original 33 Stradale in the same location. Team Representative Alessandro Alunni Bravi commented : “As we approach our home race in Monza, it’s a pleasure to unveil this incredible livery, a true tribute not only to the 33 Stradale, but to Alfa Romeo as a whole and to the country it hails from, Italy. This livery is probably one of the most beautiful we’ve ever had on a car, and to be able to showcase it in front of our home crowd – including hundreds of our team members from Hinwil on the grandstands – is an honour for all of us. "Personally, I am excited by the references to the 33 Stradale: the original model from 1967 was an iconic car that influenced style and design for a generation and beyond, and its latest incarnation embodies all this heritage while also setting the path to the future of Alfa Romeo.” Commenting on the new livery, Alfa Romeo CEO Jean Philippe Imparato added : “With the new 33 Stradale, we wanted to create something that lived up to our past, to serve the Alfa Romeo brand and to make the Alfisti fandom proud. Such a result could only have been achieved thanks to the expertise, hard work and passion of our team, with the support of management who have the clear ambition to contribute to writing chapters in the brand’s future, in full respect of its unique history. "This is the brand’s first fuoriserie (custom-built) car since 1969, and I promise it won’t be the last. Alfa Romeo F1 Team Stake’s tribute livery embodies the spirit, the passion and the vision we have put in the 33 Stradale: it is pure, classic sportiness, and it combines looks with performance. I cannot wait to see it on track this weekend.” via F1Technical.net . Motorsport news https://www.f1technical.net/news/

Lawson relishing prospect of "full build-up" for second F1 race | RaceFans Round-up
In the round-up: Liam Lawson is eager to experience his first full Formula 1 race weekend after stepping in as a substitute on Saturday at Zandvoort. In brief Lawson looking forward to contesting practice at Italian GP Having been called up last-minute to make his Formula 1 debut in last weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix after Daniel Ricciardo was ruled out of action by a crash in practice, Liam Lawson will get to contest every track session this weekend as he substitutes again for the injured AlphaTauri driver. “In Monza, it’s going to be nice to have the full build-up to the weekend preparation-wise, being able to drive in all the practice sessions. For Zandvoort, I flew in from Japan on Thursday night after racing there the previous weekend,” said Lawson. “Obviously, you’re always prepared as much as you can be for these things, but it’s so unlikely that you never really expect it to happen, and then it did! The support from the team was amazing. They did everything possible to prepare me as much as possible in the limited time we had. Even during the race, Pierre [Hamelin, race engineer] was super supportive with so much information, basically walking me through it, and that really made my life a lot easier, but obviously, there are always things you can improve on. In the race, we had every condition thrown at us, so that was difficult at the time, but also a good and positive experience, which has helped me get ready for Monza.” Nissan names its 2024 Formula E line-up Nissan will retain Sacha Fenestraz for a second season in Formula E next year, and has signed Oliver Rowland to be his team mate. Fenestraz made his FE debut last summer with Dragon Racing while in the middle of a title-contending Super Formula campaign, then was snapped up by Nissan this year for FE. He claimed a pole position and two fourth places. Nissan’s motorsport arm Nismo only started running its own FE entry this year, with the team previously being run by DAMS for four seasons. Rowland drove for them in three of those campaigns, and delivered a win and four poles. In 2022 he left for Mahindra and had his lowest-scoring season, despite a pole and a podium, and left that team after half of this season. “We’ve already enjoyed some fantastic moments together and I’m sure we are going to create some more. Thank you to Nissan and Tommaso Volpe for placing their trust in me,” said Rowland. Pirelli reveals tyre compounds for Singapore, Japan and Qatar Pirelli has revealed which tyre compounds will be used for the Singapore, Japanese and Qatar grands prix. The C3, C4 and C5 tyres have been nominated for Singapore. It will be the seventh time that teams will have the softest possible selection of tyres, with the sixth time being at Monza this weekend. In Japan and Qatar it will be the opposite, with the hardest compounds, the C1, C2 and C3, being made available to teams. The C1 is a new compound for this year, and although it has been used four times already – most recently at Zandvoort last weekend – there will be a lot to learn in Qatar as the circuit has been resurfaced since F1 last raced there in 2021 with very different cars.
