a whumpee desperately bargaining and being willing to do anything to protect someone important to them after its revealed to them that whumper has them as well. More (potentially triggering) details below

Begging to see them, desperate to know they're okay.

Going through countless hours of torture to make sure they are safe from whumper. Being kept awake for hours on end so whumper won't lay hands on that person. Being more polite/obeying better, minding their "manners" to win that person's freedom, not struggling or talking back.

Going through all of this, only to reveal whumper never had the person. (Whether they were just lying or had already killed the person)

Do they tell whumpee about it? Taunt them for being so naive? That they'd ever be allowed to see or rely on another person that wasnt whumper? How crushing is it to whumpee? Do they finally give up?

Or do they keep going until whumpee gives in and chooses themself over the person they're trying to protect? Knowing that they were the cause of someone else enduring the same pain as them?

Maybe whumpee never gives up, and whumper holds this over them forever.

How do you help people?

I don’t mean the things you say or do to help people. I’m talking about the point that St. Paul makes in today’s first reading. In what spirit are you saying it or doing it?

Because how you do what you – that gives away the spirit that you do it in. That gives away what’s going on in your heart.

Even though you may be telling yourself that you’re doing it to help people…

If you’re doing what you’re doing to make you feel better, people will know what’s in your heart.

If you’re saying what you’re saying so you can be right, people will know what’s in your heart.

If you’re shoring up a fragile self by being better than someone, by owning someone, people will know what’s in your heart.

When we do that. No matter what we tell ourselves about why we’re doing what we’re doing. No matter what we tell ourselves about why we’re saying what we’re saying.

People will know that what’s in our hearts? It isn’t love.

In the words of Pope St. Pius X, “It is vain to hope to attract souls to God by bitter zeal.

On the contrary, harm is done more often than good by taunting men harshly with their faults.”

Watching priests from both ends of the political spectrum have very public meltdowns on social media last week? And then watching people line up to condemn them, or join them in railing against their real and perceived targets?

Sent me back to Pius X’s concise and beautiful statement of why doing or saying whatever in anything but the spirit of Our Lord’s love is a complete waste of time. 

I’ve been reading and re-reading it the last few days (it’s paragraph 13, and it’s totally worth your time). For me, it’s a clarion call to take a hard look at my own motives. To do an examen – not of my day, but of my heart.

But I know I’m an outlier. Most people who saw those meltdowns? That wasn’t their reaction.

They reacted by choosing sides. And getting in on the action.

Or by tuning us out. In the words of my agnostic friend, the one that I quoted last week,

“This is why I can’t take you people and all your ‘God is love’ sh*t seriously.”
