Thank God I watched all those shitty Bengali serials. Like!!!! Bheem put SINDOOR on Ram's forehead!!! IN FRONT OF GOD!!!! AS IF THAT IS NOT THE THE MOST COMMON TROPE IN BENGALI SERIALS FOR ACCIDENTAL MARRIAGES???????

In our Bengali tradition, there is a saying that during sidoor-daan, the ritual when the groom draws the sindoor rekha on the bride’s forehead,during then if the red dust falls on the bride’s nose bridge, it means the bride is blessed  with a happy marriage.

So, while drawing this, inspired by THE ICONIC SCENE (you know which scene) from the movie, I just had to draw that little detail 🙈

I thought our wedding vows were incredible. They made me cry, they made me cry in private, I still have them saved (and I have two really deranged art projects about them - don’t you worry), and other people have cried when I shared them with them.

I had been wanting to get married to you for years.

It was a gift to hear what you wrote about me. I considered it such a wonderful wedding gift and testimony to the life we shared.

Thank you for not fighting with me on our wedding day.

I really loved the day and the small ceremony with family. I loved being with my ex-siblings-in-law.

I will never forget how your mom helped me get ready. I felt so special. I felt loved by a woman I could call my mother. I felt so pretty. I felt yours.

(I mean, I still now want a medium-huge ceremony with even more in the future, one that is so overtly romantic and spiritual.)

But it was all still nice.

Our ceremony felt magical to me.

Does the abuse negate the sanctity of the love?

I feel neutral or cold when I think about the memories of your energy on that day - like the wedding was a thing that happened, in another lifetime or universe, and you and I are on completely different timelines now.

It felt like a fantasy played out in the real world encapsulated in a memory that stays with me.

I was so excited to marry you.

I wanted it to work so badly.

I wanted you to mark me as yours everyday. I was proud to do it. I didn’t care.

I loved showing it off to people: see? I’m covered in red - they put it on me everyday. I am someone’s best friend and life partner - they love me, they accept me as I am, they desire me, they’re my best friend, they’re my inspiration, they’re my teacher, they’re the ones I talk about all my crushes to, they are my favorite gaming partner, they’re the person I want to relax with the most… I loved you so much.

I carried my travel sindoor in my purse for weeks after I filed for divorce.

I miss so many of your smiles, especially the V-shaped one.

I liked when you explain things to me.

It broke me to feel you scared, threatened, betrayed, annoyed, or angered with me.

I gave you my whole heart, even if I loved my other friends, families, and partners.

I miss how you held me at the end of the ceremony.

I was saving for a down payment of a home for us - I was looking at houses on Zillow - did I tell you?

I desperately needed OUR life to work.

I used all my savings on my brother and on creating a new life (and medical/legal expenses) instead. I have no savings now.

I have no home or family with you anymore - not even the couch I got us for a wedding present.

You didn’t get me a ring - so I couldn’t even sell it to cover my debts.

I begged you for a ring.

I had a lot of trust in our love.

Why did you keep our favorite game?

My life is better than our wedding now.

But it was my first wedding that I thought would be my only.

I thought it was perfect for us.

I will always love our wedding, even though I will never love you again.
