Why are rain frogs so round? What's /inside/ of them around such an itty bitty skeleton?

So it turns out this is a really interesting question.

The first thing we must be aware of is that rainfrogs as we see them in videos of them squeaking are not quite the same shape as they are when at rest:

But you are quite right, they are very round. This is exemplified by the skeletal photo you refer to:

So what are we seeing?

Well, firstly, note that the body cavity in these frogs actually envelops the femurs, such that only the tibiofibula (fused in frogs) and the tarsals and metatarsals are outside the body. The arms are quite similarly enveloped, but a bit of the humerus does extend outside the body cavity too. This predisposes them to a rounder body shape.

Next, note the ilia - the U-shaped bone in the pelvic region. These in some breviceptid frogs are synostotically fused with the sacrum - that is to say, they are bound by bone-based connections to the bow-shaped vertebra at their tips. This whole joint seems to be quite smooth, and as a consequence, the back of the frog is quite smooth. The other thing we can see here is that the urostyle (i.e. the frog version of a coccyx) juts quite far beyond the ischium and pubis. This extends the body cavity beyond the hips. Note also that the pelvic girdle seems to be largely below the spine, rather than the typical position for frogs behind it and continuous with it. This makes the legs sit below the spine, rather than at its end, enhnacing the vertical roundness of the animal.

Next, let’s talk some soft tissue. Now, I’m not as familiar with soft-tissue in frogs as I am their skeletons, so you’ll have to bear with me a bit (rawr). Beddard (1908!!) studied the soft tissue of Breviceps verrucosus Rapp 1842. It seems that the majority of the body of these frogs is actually muscle. Beddard noted that muscles join the leg at the knee that extend into the body cavity, such that the inclusion of the thigh in the body cavity is further accentuated by musculature. The rectus abdominalis muscle is unusually large, extending from the lower abdomen up and around the sides of the body. Indeed, this large size appears to be the pattern with all of the major muscles, though in the throat the typical arrangement of large and small muscles is somewhat reversed. On the lateral side of the head, there is a substance that is not muscle, but appears to be loose tissue in which sits what is apparently the thymus gland.

There is a very large gap between the end of the urostyle and the anus (one fifth of the total length of the frog), in which there are almost no muscles, save for the one surrounding the lower cloaca. On either side of this area, between the posterior-most muscles of the thigh, lie two large ‘lymph-hearts’, as described by Beddard. These are between one quarter and one third of the total length of the frog. A further lypmh-sac sits between these lymph-hearts and the skin of the femoral region, and they are thus probably analogous to the femoral lymph-sacs of other frogs.

I find it interesting that Beddard (1908) did not mention any glandular formations in the dorsal region. As is evidence from many images (see below), these frogs are able to secrete a white, sticky, noxious substance from their skin (which they actually have to use during amplexus, as the male is too small relative to the female to mount her properly, and so he sticks himself to her with his glandular glue… kinky).

These glands do not apparently take up a great deal of the cutaneous tissue, and so I suppose are of no consequence to the size of the frog, especially relative to its enormous muscles.

The diet of these frogs consists almost exclusively of hymenopterans and isopterans (ants and termites). Neither of these insect groups are particularly fatty, so it is little surprise that their bodies appear to contain no large fat deposits - fatty bodies extend from the gonads up to the lungs and heart, but these comprise only a tiny fraction of the frog’s mass, and don’t contribute to the round shape. Instead, their bodies are extremely muscular, allowing them to be adept burrowers, ideal for their fossorial lifestyle.

So TL;DR: rain frogs are little balls of muscle (maybe the largest muscle mass relative to body mass of any vertebrate? science just doesn’t know).

We all know what a blorbo is, but have you ever wondered what the weirdest one out there is? If so, this bracket is for you. From forgotten side-characters to historical figures to real life boats, this poll aims to find the oddest most obscure object of obsession. The winner of this poll will be the strangest fave on the Strange Fave website, and submissions are open HERE.

Rules:

Blorbo is a flexible term, but usually applies to sentient characters. The key here is that you love them & adore them & would call them "poor little meow meow" and other such terms of affection. If you want to scrunch them like an accordion, put them in a salad spinner, tenderly care for their wounds, or wring them out like a washcloth, you're on the right track.

Blorbo does not have to be from your shows. They can be from your books, your videogames, your history books, or really anything you can think of.

Real people are allowed BUT only if they are ALREADY PUBLIC/HISTORICAL FIGURES & NOT ON THIS WEBSITE. I am not putting Neil Gaiman or whoever in here without their express permission.

So, because it’s been a long time since I played the SIms 2, I took these screenshots before I remembered that the screenshot quality SUCKS in Sims 2, so I’m sorry, I’ll just dump them here hehe. I downloaded an app called Share X to take screenshots but its a little weird because it doesn’t save them automatically as far as I can tell. I need a better way to do this- let me know if you guys have any ideas!

Anyway, what happened so far is we built the founder his house and got him started tending his garden and making friends in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, some unplanned things happen and he turns into a Plantsim! The second episode will be going live soon, I’ll post it when its ready.

Summary- The reader gets kidnapped and her captor exposes her relationship with Spencer to the team. They race to find her before it’s too late.

You danced around your kitchen while wiping down the counter. You were so into the music that you didn't hear your front door open and close. You didn't hear the slight squish of his boots on the hardwood as he slowly approached you. When you finally turned around you let out a small scream and dropped the cloth you were using.

"Jesus Danny! You scared me!" You yelled whacking your cousin's chest as you started to laugh.

"Sorry Y/N didn't mean to startle you" He replied slowly bending down to grab the cloth and then handing it to you.

"So how long are you in town for? I have to get into work soon but I'd love to get dinner or something when I get bac-'' You were cut off by something hard hitting the back of your head causing you to fall to the floor.

"Alright let's get started!" Garcia said enthusiastically while clapping her hand together.

"Wait, where's Y/L/N?" Hotch asked and everyone looked at each other realizing you weren't there.

"Maybe she's sick or slept in?" Spencer piped up, slightly confused himself. You guys had been dating for a while but only JJ knew about it. "I can give her a call to see what's up?"

"Let's brief first and then call her, tell her to meet at the police station," Hotch said and nodded to Garcia to continue.

"No need to take your Dramamine! This case is right in DC. Alright so in the last month four bodies have turned up. Allison Mark, Taylor McLaughlin, Jaime Hunt, and Kayla Johnson. All women in their late 20's were abducted from their homes, held for a week, and then killed." Garcia explained while going through the case on the screen behind her.

"This unsub definitely has a type, all the victims look like they could be sisters." She pointed out. She couldn't help but have a weird feeling about how eerily similar they looked to you. The same y/h/c and y/e/c, the same sparkle in their eye, and the same bright smile. She tried to shake the thought from her head as the rest of the team continued to go over the details.

"Alright. Prentiss and Rossi I want you to head to the ME, JJ, and Morgan I want you to go and pick up Y/L/N and then head to the dumpsite. Reid and I will head to the station." Hotch said picking up his case file and walking out of the conference room. Everyone nodded and split up heading to their SUV with their assigned partners.

Morgan and JJ had pulled up to your apartment and saw your car parked outside. They headed into the building and walked up the stairs to your apartment. You lived on the fourth floor but taking the stairs was faster than the elevator. When they approached your door Morgan knocked fairly loudly so that if you were sleeping hopefully it would wake you. After about 30 seconds and still no response JJ pulled out her phone dialing your number as Morgan knocked again.

Still, no response so JJ pulled out the emergency key you had given her about a year ago. Penelope and her were your closest friends on the team so along with Spencer, they both had a key in case of emergency. JJ deemed this an emergency.

She went to put the key in the lock but realized it was already unlocked. That was weird. You never left your door unlocked. The only people that ever needed to get in had keys. She gave Derek a concerned look as she pulled her gun from its holster. Morgan quickly followed her action as they opened your door.

"Y/N!" JJ called out walking into your bedroom as Derek made his way into your living room and then into the kitchen.

"JJ in here!" Derek yelled. JJ ran in seeing broken glass on the floor and your cell on the kitchen counter. As Morgan pulled out his phone to inform Hotch, JJ looked around more closely noticing a few drops of blood near the broken glass. You didn't leave without a struggle.

"Hotch, she's not here...... no, her car is but she isn't...... there looks like there was a struggle...... yea we're on the way." Morgan looked at JJ as he hung up the phone. "Another body just turned up. We just found this guy's pattern. And his latest victim."

JJ swallowed a lump in her throat that she didn't know was there. She nodded her head as she followed Morgan back to the car.

You woke up in a cold sweat not knowing where you were or how you got there. You quickly realized you were gagged and bound to a chair. You frantically tried to wriggle your hand free but they wouldn't budge. You looked around but there wasn't much to see. You were in a big open space. The floor and walls were concrete, you assumed you were in an abandoned building of some kind, maybe a warehouse.

Your head was pounding and you could feel the dried blood on the side of your face. You closed your eyes and tried to take a deep breath and remain as calm as possible, given the situation you were in. Just when you got your breathing in control you heard his voice and it sent chills down your spine.

"Good, you are finally awake! I was getting bored." He laughed. You looked at him absolutely terrified. How could he be doing this to you? You were his family. He just gave you a wicked smile before pulling out a camera. He placed it on a tripod and turned it on. You stared at the blinking red light drowning out what he was saying.

You only reacted when he took a knife dragging it across your cheek making you cry out in pain. He just laughed moving the knife to your arm before pushing down causing the cut to go deeper and you let out a muffled sob.

" I think that's enough of a message don't you?" He smiled again before taking the SIM card out of the camera and placing it in an envelope. He then handed you a sharpie and placed the paper under your hand. Forcing you to write the words FBI BAU TEAM on it so they couldn't analyze his handwriting.

Once you were done he took the envelope and the sharpie before leaving you alone again. He drove the hour-long distance to Quantico and walked up the building with a dark hoodie on. He knew it was kind of risky but if he got questioned he could definitely talk his way out of it. Once inside he handed the envelope to a security guard.

"I don't know man! I was across the street enjoying a nice iced coffee and when I went to get in my car I saw this on my windshield." He explained. The guard just nodded before making his way up to the sixth floor and handing it to one of the team members.

Your head slowly lolled to the side as your eyes fluttered closed. You were tired and in pain. You just wanted this to be over with. Just as you let slumber claim your body you were instantly awoken to the feeling of cold water being sprayed at you. You whimpered as the freezing water completely soaked your body making your teeth slightly chatter against the gag. The water turned off just as fast as it had been turned on and you saw Danny laughing holding a hose. He dropped it before making his way over to you. He slowly stroked your face and then retracted his hand.

"I think your friends might want to see this." He said walking away before reappearing with the camera, this time it was hooked up to a laptop and you knew he was going to live stream it. He set up the tripod and then turned around typing a few things into the computer and then stalking back over to you. Once he could tell the team was watching he started speaking.

" Ya know, I didn't really know how to feel when your mom told me you had a boyfriend." He started playing with a small knife in his hands. "She wouldn't shut up about him! She told me how you met up for lunch and told her you thought he was the one. Now when she said that, it struck a nerve. I've known you your whole life and never once were you ever serious about any guy but then all of a sudden you've had a boyfriend for four and a half years and are planning a future with him." He was starting to get angrier as he spoke and you knew Spencer and the team were hearing this.

"So it got me thinking. You always liked to brag and everything needed to be perfect with you. And after I looked him up it finally clicked. Supervisory Special Agent Spencer Reid. Or is it Doctor Spencer Reid. Who has three PhDs and two BAs? A child prodigy who went to high school at the age of twelve. You must have eaten that up." He laughed. He was trying to get under your skin and it was working. "He's just a fancy label to you. You don't love him for his personality, you love the attention you get from HIM being your boyfriend!"

"So tell me. How'd you do it? Huh? You were never interested in someone for longer than two months, how's you manage to fake four years?" He gave you a quizzical look before you saw a light bulb go off in his head. "Actually! Don't just tell me. Tell him." He pointed to the camera before stalking over to you and untying your gag.

"Don't listen to him, Spencer! I love you! Please find me!" You cried before you were silenced by the gag again. You had made him angry.

"You liar! You're lying to him! You bitch!" With that he took the knife in his hands, pushing it into your thigh. He twisted it and then pulled it out. You screamed in pain against the thick cloth material in your mouth. You looked down at the red liquid quickly oozing out of your leg as you continued to cry.

"Don't you get it! I loved you! I'm in love with you! What does he have that I don't!" He screamed as you started seeing spots. The pain radiating through your body. You started to struggle to keep your eyes open, your head dropping. As they started to flutter closed Danny aggressively grabbed your cheeks causing you to stare at him.

"I'm not done!" He yelled slapping you harshly before letting go of your face, your head immediately dropping again. He growled in irritation before walking back over to the hose spraying with the freezing cold water cause you to be on high alert.

"Now let's tell that boyfriend of yours the truth." He said coming up behind you and untying the gag again. This time held a knife against your shoulder. "Now tell him! Tell him you don't love him!"

You shook your head staying quiet. He pushed the knife into your shoulder with just enough pressure to break the skin, and you let out a soft whimper.

"SAY IT!" He yelled again causing you to flinch. You still stayed silent and he pushed the knife in all the way. You yelped at the pain finally giving in.

"I-I-I don't love you. I-I'm s-sorry" You cried out looking straight into the camera. Your heartfelt like breaking for saying those words. Danny, satisfied, pulled the knife out of your shoulder and walked around to the front of you. He bent down so he was face to face with you.

"I really hope he's still watching," He said quietly as he leaned in and kissed you. Danny slowly pulled away with rage in his eyes after about 20 seconds. "You didn't kiss back! Why did-" He was cut off but rustling outside of the warehouse. He stopped speaking and placed a hand over your already gagged mouth. When the rustling got closer he panicked and jabbed the knife into your stomach making you sharply inhale.

"FBI! DANIEL ANDERSON DON'T MOVE!" You sighed a breath of relief as you heard your friend and co-worker Derek Morgan's voice boom out. Danny went to plunge the knife into your body again before you heard a shot fired, the man in front of you falling to the floor. Knowing he was dead and you would be safe made your entire body relax.

"Hey, sweetheart" Morgan quickly walked over to you. Derek yelled into his radio for a medic once he saw your injuries. You started seeing spots again and felt weaker than ever before. You felt his hand reach up and gently grabbed your face so he could look at you. Your skin was paler than ever before and your lips had a bluish tint.

"JJ! Hurry!" He yelled behind you and you heard heels clicking over to you. Your eyes started to flutter closed again as you didn't have the strength to keep them open any longer. "Hey, hey, hey come on pretty girl keep those eyes open for me," Derek said hurriedly as JJ was untying the restraints that keep you in the chair. You tried your best but you just couldn't stay awake. The last thing you heard was Derek yelling into his radio again for the medics to hurry up.

Welcome to Plumbob Falls, Population 8!

OK so I’ve been playing Sims 2 for about a week straight and I’m a bit addicted. I won’t make a habit of doing this because I find the screenshots in Sims 2 a bit ugly for Simblr, but here are the starter sims for my empty ‘hood.

From Left to Right: Abigail (Scorpio, Fortune), Benjamin (Cancer, Family), Cassidy (Aries, Knowledge), Dawson (Taurus, Romance), Eden (Aquarius, Family), Felix (Virgo, Fortune), Greta (Gemini, Popularity) & Hugo (Aquarius, Popularity).

I’m essentially building an entire neighborhood from scratch without any townies or lots. The challenge exists in the community as the Build a City Challenge but I’ve stripped away a lot of the rules.

The main point is that everything in the world has to come from these eight sims, from businesses to every other sim in town.

Some bonus rules:

Every generation I’m allowed to add one sim in the neighborhood for some fresh genetics.

Every 10 babies born gives me a community lot (pools, parks, gyms, etc.) Anything else (like bars and shops) must be owned by a sim in town.

I have to play every single sim in town. I play rotationally. Every Monday at 8am I switch households so all of the ages match.

My sims can have any job they want. I don’t have any restrictions on those (unlike some BAC challenge rules I’ve read).

I will have rules to unlock subhoods (Downtown, University, Vacation) but I haven’t decided on those yet.

I’ll do another post to let y’all know what happened during my first rotation since I’ve just finished playing through all eight households.

2. all time least favorite fc?

Por muito tempo, eu tive uma coisinha inexplicável contra personagens com a Bae Suzy de FC. Isso passou rapidinho e acho que era mais implicância com a troupe de “patricinha metida” do que qualquer coisa. O que é irônico, porque hoje em dia eu me apaixono em todas as personagens que cabem nessa troupe FACINHO.

5. least favorite connection type? (i.e enemies, exes, fwbs, childhood best friends, etc.)

Se for pra escolher uma, amizade colorida fica meio entediante se faltar no lado da amizade e não tiver química/sentimento o bastante pra pesar pro lado romântico também. Fica basicamente só uma pegação sem peso no plot/desenvolvimento e deixa de ser divertido rapidinho (pra mim!).

10. best experience you’ve had in a rp?

A BAC foi divertida do começo ao fim pra mim, em todos meus personagens (eu tive 4 por lá, contanto com a segunda fase do rp). E menção honrosa pra aquelas duas semanas de Dynasty que ATÉ HOJE NÃO SEI PORQUE FECHOU, mas foi super legal e não tinha um personagem que não fosse divertido/interessante.

Ultimamente, fantasia e ação! Fantasia no sentido de criaturas mágicas, mitológicas, povos fae e tudo o mais, e ação envolve todo tipo de gangue, máfia e coisa do tipo. Adoro 🥺

Eunhwa: That man.... He said specifically a place that sells chicken..... yet every place I went wouldn’t hire me.... There’s just one left... crossing my fingers

Eunhwa: Gosh I hope they’ll hire me....

Eunhwa: Is this place even open? There’s no one here... I have to try though.....

Eunhwa: Uhm...Hello?

Soyu: Hello, who are you and why are you here?

Eunhwa: This is a resturant that sells mainly chicken right?

*Inner Thoughts: Is she the owner...? She’s so pretty...!*

Soyu: Yes.... why...?

Eunhwa: Well you see... I was looking for a part time job and well I had a.... fortune given to me saying I should get a job at a place like this... so here I am... are you hiring?

Soyu: In fact, I am, sit down.

Soyu: So tell me.... whats your name, and when are you free?

Eunhwa: Uh! My name is Lee Eunhwa and pretty much every day after school.... I don’t really do much.

Soyu: Hmmm... a minor.... I suppose it could be worse.

Eunhwa: Please... I really need this job and no one else would give me the time of day.

Soyu: Well, this place barely has any costumers but I suppose I could use your help. You start on monday, don’t make me regret this okay?

Eunhwa: Thank you so much miss! I promise I won’t make you regret this!

Soyu: Now if you’ll excuse me I have some things I need to check on. I’ll see you monday.

Eunhwa: *softly* YES!

Eunhwa: I gotta go home, Auntie is probably waiting for me.....

Eunhwa: I knew I shouldn’t have taken that path.... now I’m lost. Great. Now auntie will really be mad..... ugh. I should turn around and go bac-

Goon #1: Not so fast... little girl

Goon #2: Your family owes us, and your aunt says you’ve been hiding the deeds to a large inheritance.... either you hand it over or...

Goon #1: You’re going to... not like the outcome.

Goon #2: Thats what they all say. If you don’t talk things are going to end badly for you.

Eunhwa: *THINKING* Someone...... please help......

Reaper: So... whats it like being the Goblin....?

Goblin: Wouldn’t you like to know....

Reaper: Are you a jerk all the time, or just to reapers?

Goblin: Do all reapers look like they’re in an emo phase or just you?

Reaper: Rude.

Goblin: Right back at you. Since we clearly can’t get along maybe you should just leave.

Reaper: Trying to get me to leave again, I signed a contract and you agreed to it, so I live here-

Goblin: -Shh..... Somethings wrong. She’s in trouble.

Eunhwa: Please.... I don’t have it...!

Grim #1: Just hand it over, and we won’t hurt you.

Eunhwa: *gasp*

Goon #2: Who the hell are you? How the hell did you find us?

Goon #1: You better leave, this has nothing to do with you.

Goblin: I suggest.... that you get the hell away from her, and never go near her again unless you want to feel real pain. Got it? You’re going to turn yourselves into the authorities and you’ll never stop arguing with eachother.

Eunhwa: *Thinking* He’s.... saving me....

Goon 1#: Let’s get out of here! That guy looks insane! You always attract people cause you’re so loud!

Goon #2: It’s your fault someone found us, I hate you! Let’s run!

Eunhwa: Few.... I thought I was screwed.

Goblin: Are you alright....?

Eunhwa: Yes.... but how the heck did you find me?

Goblin: You asked for help..... “Someone help me”.... I heard it.

Eunhwa: Am.... I dead? Is that why HE’s here? Did I die?

Goblin: No... he was here, just incase. But we need to talk. Come with me, he won’t be joining us.

Eunhwa: So.... who are you actually...?

Goblin: That you don’t need to know.

Eunhwa: But... why am I connected to you?!

Goblin: That’s what I’d like to know. You can see reapers, and ghosts, yes?

Eunhwa: Yes... and all my life ghosts have been telling me I’m “the goblins bride”

Goblin: .........Can you see anything else?

Eunhwa: ...

Goblin: Well..?

Eunhwa: No.

Goblin: Well then, you’re not the bride of the goblin, forget about that. You are still special somehow. But it doesn’t matter. I can’t have you calling/wishing for me to swoop in and save you whenever you feel like it.

Eunhwa: It’s not like I’m trying to! It just.... happens?

Goblin: Well, stop it. Goodbye, Eunhwa.

Eunhwa: Wait.... how did he know my name? And he never told me his! Ugh......

Eunhwa: He could’ve atleast taken me home..... aunties gonna be pissed.

Soyu: Pigeons are so weirdly fun to watch.....

Soyu: Hey! You! You scared the birds! Thanks a lot.

Reaper: Who? Me? Uh Sorry....

Soyu: Hm..... it’s okay.

Soyu: The name’s Soyu..... I have an idea. How about to make it up to me I give you my number! Maybe we can meet up sometime for coffee or... something.

Reaper: Uh. Okay.

Soyu: I’ll see you around... whats your name?

Reaper: ....

Soyu: Playing hard to get? Alright, just give me a call whenever, hehe.
